Background
As the first modern battleship built during World War II, she was highly advanced and considered the pinnacle of ship engineering at the time.
Her numerous and grand achievements throughout the Pacific earned her 15 Battle Stars.
She was so famous that after the war, students from all over North Carolina state raised $330,000 to purchase her from the Navy and turn her into a museum ship, which she currently is in Wilmington near the southeastern tip of the state.
She was also designated a US National Historical Landmark in 1986.
