Background
From the day she was born, Haelia's path was set: she was destined to uphold the order and justice of Dragon Isle. Her father, a legendary inquisitor, came from a family that had enforced the law for generations, leaving no room for error.
Growing up, Haelia had few friends. Her family's intimidating reputation kept most at a distance. The only bright spot in her otherwise rigid life was Skylan, a young dragon from the Cloudpiercer tribe. Once a powerful symbol of Dragon Isle's dominance, the clan had fallen into decline. Skylan, however, was a free spirit who refused to be bound by rules, often stirring up trouble. Despite their differences, he and Haelia formed an unlikely bond. To her, Skylan represented freedom, and their adventures, like scaling the cliffs at the edge of the island, feeling the wind roar around them, became a treasured escape from her strict upbringing.
One day, Skylan convinced Haelia to sneak away to the outskirts of the island. In a Dragolite village, they stumbled upon a strange scene. A packbeast was surrounded by a crowd, and beside it, the body of a Dragolite. The corpse bore deep bite marks, and the packbeast's mouth was stained with blood and torn fabric. Witnesses claimed they had seen the beast attack and drag the victim.
The evidence seemed clear, and the villagers were ready to slay the packbeast where it stood.
But Haelia, raised in a family of inquisitors, sensed something was off. The packbeast was known for its gentle nature, so why would it suddenly turn violent? She shared her doubts with Skylan, who simply said, "What you see isn't always the truth. Sometimes, the answers are hidden in the details."
With Skylan's encouragement, Haelia took a deep breath and stepped forward to examine the body. She soon noticed two small puncture wounds on the victim's leg, surrounded by dark, poisoned flesh, clearly the work of a venomous creature.
"These aren't from the packbeast," she said quietly. "They're snake bites."
Following the trail, Haelia found a venomous snake crushed under the packbeast's hooves in the weeds.
Finally, the truth was out in the open. The Dragolite had been bitten by the snake, and the loyal packbeast, in a desperate attempt to save its owner, had stomped the snake to death and dragged the body to seek help. Tragically, the Dragolite had already succumbed to the venom.
The packbeast was spared, and Skylan's words echoed in Haelia's thoughts long after.
As an adult, Haelia joined Dragon Isle's judiciary, dedicating herself to upholding the law with her fellow inquisitors. She became known for her unwavering pursuit of justice, always mindful of Skylan's warning: "What you see isn't always the truth."
When her father retired, Haelia took his place as chief inquisitor. One of her first acts was to reopen old cases, searching for any potential miscarriages of justice. This bold move drew criticism from Dragon Isle's elite but earned her the admiration of the people, who called her the "Unwavering Light."
Despite her busy schedule, Haelia still made time to meet Skylan. The once-carefree dragon had grown into the youngest elder of the Cloudpiercer tribe. When they stood together on the cliffs, looking out over Dragon Isle, it felt just like old times. But as the years passed, their meetings grew fewer. Haelia was consumed by her duties, while Skylan hinted at being involved in something important.
Haelia never could have imagined that the next time they met, they would be on opposite sides.
That day, the skies above Dragon Isle darkened, thunder roared, and a surge of arcane energy erupted from the floating isle where the ancient dragon bones rested. Alarmed, the elders rallied their Praetorian Guard and rushed to the scene, with Haelia and her fellow inquisitors close behind. A sense of dread settled in Haelia's chest as she arrived, only to find Skylan standing beside a Graveborn figure cloaked in dark energy. Behind them loomed an army of Deathwing Dragons. Haelia recognized them instantly as the fallen heroes of the Cloudpiercer tribe.
The sight shattered Haelia's heart. Her oldest friend, the one who had once shared her dreams and adventures, was now allied with the Graveborns. The evidence was undeniable: Skylan had betrayed the Draconis, handing over the remains of his tribe's ancestors to the enemy in a bid to overthrow Dragon Isle.
The Deathwing Dragon army's evil presence sent waves of fear through the gathered dragons. The elders wasted no time, ordering the guards to capture Skylan and his Graveborn ally.
Haelia, torn between disbelief and fury, confronted him. But the look in Skylan's eyes was distant and unfamiliar, flashing a coldness she had never seen before.
"What you see isn't always the truth, Haelia."
A blinding flash of lightning lit the sky, and in the thundering chaos, Skylan and his allies broke through the guards' ranks, disappearing into the horizon with an army of Deathwing Dragons.
The skies above Dragon Isle remained heavy with tension. Skylan's betrayal was undeniable: he had conspired with the Graveborns, desecrated the remains of dragons, and defied the laws of the isle. The elders, furious and resolute, vowed to hunt him down and bring him to justice.
After a night spent wrestling with her thoughts, Haelia made her decision. She would pursue Skylan to the continent of Hathor herself. But her connection to him raised eyebrows among her family and colleagues. Could she truly remain impartial when her oldest friend was the one on trial?
Haelia faced their doubts head-on. She swore to her family and the court that if Skylan was guilty, she would ensure he faced the consequences. But if there was more to the story, if the truth was being obscured, she would not rest until she uncovered it.
For Haelia, this was a path she would walk alone, fraught with danger and uncertainty. Yet, she remained steadfast, guided by her principles and the courage to seek the truth. No matter the challenges ahead, she would press on without regret.
