Background
"Stone does not bleed. It was the only mercy Athena ever granted me."
The sea winds that had swept this forsaken isle for centuries still carried the taste of salt and blood. As I slowly passed by the cold, ruined walls, another stone statue came into view, locked in lifeless quiet. Once, he had been a mortal hero who attempted to slay me. Now he stood forever with his sword held aloft, frozen in a charging stance. He had become yet another pillar supporting the dome of this grand hall. Centuries have passed, and the statues scattered across this island have long since become too many to count. The temple's foundations, its steps, even its altar are all built from their petrified remains. Some are forever frozen with swords drawn as they charge. Some remain on their knees, pleading for mercy. Others still hold their blades aloft, caught in the attempt to sever my head before the stone claimed them. Every single statue is but another soul who tried to define me. Monster. Gorgon. Calamity. An abomination whose head had to be taken. They burdened me with countless dreadful names, yet no one remembers that before the serpents stirred upon my head, I too once bore a mortal name. I remain here, a priestess without a god, wandering these ruins built from heroes turned to stone. The shrine stands empty, and the only thing I continue to worship is the judgment that never came.
I was once the most devoted priestess in Athena's temple. I believed, with all the fervor of my faith, that if I remained pure and devoted all my youth to the goddess, I would live out my mortal life beneath the light of her wisdom. That faith endured only until towering waves shattered the gates of the temple. In that moment, everything I had believed in was swept away. Poseidon's trident shattered the silence that had long enveloped the temple, and his shadow fell across Athena's altar. It was a struggle for power between the gods, and I was nothing more than a sacrifice the sea had claimed to humiliate wisdom. That night, I knelt before the cold altar and begged the lofty goddess for a single act of true protection. But the goddess merely looked down upon me from her pedestal, her gaze filled with pity, yet she said nothing. Only after the tide had receded did the curse finally descend upon me. She crowned my head with hissing serpents, filled my eyes with the curse that turned all who met my gaze to stone, and took from me even the right to weep. She did not punish Poseidon. The laws of Olympus forbade her from passing judgment on another of the chief gods, and the God of the Sea would have seen any open act of protection as a declaration of war. It was all she could give me. It wasn't until the first band of marauders set foot on the island and were turned to stone that I finally understood her wisdom. It was never merely a curse. It was the only weapon she could place in my hands after I had been ruined. It ensured that anyone who came for me would first be frozen beneath my gaze. That very weapon also took my face, my name, and any hope of ever returning to the world of mortals. I could never truly hate her. It was the curse she bestowed upon me that ensured I would never again be at anyone's mercy. Yet I can never forgive her. She preserved the order of the gods, leaving me alone to bear the cost. I still live, but only as an object of mortal fear. No one dares meet my gaze, and no one would ever draw near the woman who once bore a mortal name. All I can do is remain within this temple of stone, waiting for the judgment that refuses to fall. I know she is always watching me from above the clouds. Watching as I lay each shattered piece of my faith upon another, until it becomes stone. Watching the sin she wrought with her own hands weather the ages into a scar this forsaken isle will never lose. I will never bring this farce to an end for the gods. I will live on forever as the stain upon her flawless name that can never be washed away.
That was the day the ending they had written for me was finally woven into the threads of fate. A hero named Perseus was already crossing the sea. The gods had armed him with a gleaming blade and a polished bronze shield, so he could turn my own gaze against me and take my head without ever looking into my eyes. Even my death had long since been written as another hero's triumph. But that blade never reached me. I lifted my head and looked to the heavens one last time. For all those centuries, it was never the hero I had been waiting for. I was waiting for her to look back at me just once. This time, Athena did not avert her eyes. She raised the Aegis, letting the gaze of my serpent eyes fall upon its golden surface. For centuries, anyone who met my gaze was turned to stone. Yet the one who now returned my gaze was the very goddess who had fashioned these eyes with her own hands. She did not turn to stone. It was not the shield that cracked, but the old vows, the old sins, and the judgment that had been so long denied. A piercing cry split the heavens as a deep fissure tore through the golden vault above. Before it, even the threads of the Three Fates lost their course. So there was another sky beyond the order she had upheld. I shattered the altar built from the petrified heroes, never once looking back, and leapt into the unknown abyss. In this new world, I am no longer a priestess bound to any god. I no longer have to bear the burden of their old sins, nor do I need her distant protection anymore. They once turned my name into another word for monster. From this day forward, that name belongs to me alone.
