The United Kingdom loaned Victorious to the United States from December 1942 to September 1943.
Following the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, in which Hornet had been sunk and Enterprise had been badly damaged, Saratoga was the only American carrier operational in the Pacific.
Victorious had the call sign "Robin" while serving with the US Navy, leading her to be called USS Robin.
