Return to the North

As the ice storm brews on the horizon, Isolde watches from her barren quarters in Fort Blacklast leaning on her mighty sword, Sanctaferra, imagining the storm to come in Fort Blacklast's uncertain future.

Born to Lord Hengest's mistress, she is the younger half-sister of King Harz of Fort Blacklast and may well be the last hope for the line that has served the north for 14 generations should her brother fall in battle.

Her father Lord Hengest was a difficult man, much like the frostbitten land he ruled, not used to the fineries of life like the noble houses in the lands far to the south like the Mosune Empire.

Instead of spoiling them, he forced his children into servitude to craft them as honorable people worthy of the Blacklast name.

Harz was sent into the army, where he defended the land with his blade for years before succumbing to injury and being sent to travel around Tya, forging links and acting as an ambassador until he was tragically recalled to defend against Frost Giants and take over from his dying father.

Meanwhile, Isolde was sent to a nunnery in the Mosune Empire to become a Solarist nun.

While she became a devout believer dedicated to spreading the holiness of the sun, especially in the places most starved of the sun in the north, she could not help jealously dreaming of becoming a blades master for Fort Blacklast.

Yet her father insisted it was not a woman's place, even though she trained night after night in secret with a nun who had been a pirate before fleeing to the sanctity of the nunnery.

After years at the nunnery, with Isolde forced to shave off her beautiful golden hair and staring at the mountains in the distance paving the way home, a merchant from the north visited to sell Frost Whale oil.

She asked the man what news there was of home, and he replied that there had been a great calamity, all of her family other than Harz, who was now lord of Fort Blacklast, had been slain in a great battle against Frost Giants.

Fearing for her homeland, she broke her vows as a nun in great shame and returned north, ready to take up a blade for her family.

Yet despite her heroism in battle after years of dedication to the way of the sword, she was not welcomed by many, knowing her disgrace of fleeing the nunnery.

Harz nonetheless was grateful to see his sister after all these years and officially made her his heir, although her vows had made her renounce all links to nobility.

As the people of Fort Blacklast gossip and scheme and as the Frost Giants threaten beyond the great wall, Lady Isolde, the Blade of the Sun, watches and waits for an opportunity to prove herself, determined to protect Fort Blacklast and, if necessary, lead it.

The Sunfire Acolyte

Isolde was once a devout Solarist nun, dedicated to her faith and the light it brought to the world.

Like all Solarists, she practiced swordplay as a form of meditation.

Her days were spent in prayer and discipline, her heart unwavering in its loyalty to the order.

Eventually, she crossed paths with a reclusive monk who had long abandoned the strictest teachings of the order.

His teachings were shaped not only by faith, but also earthly wisdom.

"Faith guides us," he said, "but some decisions must adhere to the heart." Under his guidance, Isolde discovered that devotion did not mean abandoning one's personal agency.

Later, dreadful news would reach her— a brutal invasion left the North engulfed in chaos.

In turmoil, she returned to her chambers to pray, finding the old monk's armor on her bed, reforged to fit her shape.

Without hesitation, the Sunfire Acolyte set off for the North.
