Profile

Rivenhald carries the title "The Hornbound Sovereign".

Background

"His love is a thing with teeth—silent, patient, buried beneath duty." -Eirlys

Before he was king, Rivenhald was a boy dragging corpses out of avalanche rubble.

His village was razed in a border dispute no one remembers.

His people had pleaded for help, and the southern lords sent their sympathies.

So, the survivors built their own fires, buried their dead in ice, and stopped asking.

Prophecy had never decreed him a ruler. Rivenhald rose because he didn't freeze, because when everyone else stopped marching, he refused.

He hunted with broken arrows, traded meat for steel...

When his war-chief lost a leg in a raid, Rivenhald carried him three days through a blizzard, then put a dagger to his heart before infection took him.

There was no glory. Just the quiet understanding that someone must always make the call.

His title, Hornbound, came when he tamed Gildram, a wild mountain ram that had gored five other riders to death.

Rivenhald did not break the beast; he simply earned its respect.

They still don't trust each other, not completely, but they share one rule: never run.

Rivenhald built his "kingdom" from grit, blood, and silence.

No parades. No throne. Just a dozen outposts stitched together by unmarked roads, and a trail of dead things too foolish to give his people a wide berth.

The Southern courts call him a savage warlord.

He calls himself a placeholder, keeping the wilds alive until someone better comes along.

But no one ever does.

Rivenhald never smiles. Never drinks. Doesn't pray.

His people follow him because he speaks last, acts first, and always comes back from the storm.

Eirlys arrived in his kingdom like the first flakes of a gentle winter, a healer seeking refuge, running from her past.

Or so he believes... She saved his life on more than one occasion, going so far as to throw his armaments into a fire when he attempted to return to a battle that raged for two full days despite an arrow having shattered his collarbone.

He has loved her for years, despite never speaking the words.

More often than not, he dreams of how their story likely ends: two figures poised on opposite ends of a barren field, blades drawn, the sky torn open above them.

One falls. Sometimes her, others, him. The snow drinks blood in silence, indifferent to which soul it claims.

And when he wakes, it is always with a scream.

Raw, wordless, echoing through the stone halls like a ghost.

But until that day comes, Rivenhald shall still ride with Eirlys at his side.

He listens to the cold, watching the south.

He understands that peace will never know him.

But when death comes, it shall find him mid-charge.

He is the herald of the festival and the closest companion of King Harz.

Rivenhald rides a mighty frost-maned reindeer, its antlers adorned with ice crystals that never melt, its hooves ringing clear and sprinkling stardust in its wake across the night sky.

On the night of the Frostfall Festival, he carries the season's joy and blessings, traveling through every town and village, bringing hope and wonder to all.

The sound of bells drawing near is the most anticipated prelude to the celebrations.

Before setting out, he always treads lightly upon the frozen lake, shattering the icy surface to release the laughter and cheers trapped within, letting them echo once more through the winter night.

The wish bells hung by children in their windows chime their own as his shadow sweeps by—the most touching overture of the festival.

And when he passes through the slumbering forest, frozen branches burst into glittering ice blossoms at his presence, and hibernating little animals glimpse his graceful form in their dreams.
