He was the chief bookmaker and royal accountant to the king of Mordeus, a man trusted to tally grain, taxes, mercenary contracts, and the dead of war.

Early on, Varro learned that power was not seized by swords, but debt.

Armies marched because they were owed. Nobles obeyed because they were bound.

Even the king of Mordeus ruled only so long as the numbers allowed it—and Varro detested that they did.

As campaigns drained the coffers and royal mismanagement festered, Varro tightened the ledgers, redirected funds, and leveraged debts so carefully that the kingdom began to teeter on the edge of ruin.

Gold evaporated from the treasury, contracts went unpaid, mercenary loyalty wavered—but every failure could be traced to the king's pride and folly.

It was, in every sense, the king's own doing—but Varro ensured the accounts told the story of incompetence, not cunning.

With the king's reputation tattered and the realm floundering, mortal currency seemed insufficient to bend the world to Varro's ambitious will.

Taxes, grain, and coin could no longer guarantee obedience or control; only the ultimate leverage would suffice.

He descended into the vaults and under-crypts, past the ends of royal death ledgers, where the names of the dead abruptly ceased.

Here, amidst shadows and silent tombs, he drafted a new kind of balance sheet—one measured not in gold, but life itself.

The pact was precise. Varro would assume the throne and convert Mordeus into a kingdom that paid its dues in the souls of its people.

In exchange, the Nether God claimed the reigning king's essence as collateral—reforged into Bayle, a chained executioner bound to Varro's command.

The moment the crown passed, the old king screamed, his lifeforce torn from flesh and written into the ledger that now rests upon Varro's lap.

To maintain control beyond his borders, Varro forged a careful alliance with Khamet, the Pharaoh of Decay.

Where Varro measured debts and enforced order, Khamet commanded legions of bound corpses and nightmares.

Together, they ensured that Tya's realms not

only paid, but feared the cost of forbearance.

It is a partnership of convenience, and mutual respect—each recognizing in the other a sovereign of mortality and inevitability.

Now he reigns from crypt and smoke, his horns branded with the Nether God's eye, his Ledger swelling with names.

He does not revel in death, nor does he mourn.

To him, souls are overdue payments, and war is merely interest accruing.
