Chapter 2: Welcome Back to Soul Society
46 scenes, 981 lines
1. Map 1, stage 1, after the battle
25 lines"Don't worry, I'll make it quick." The hollow then let out a sinister laugh, and swung its razor-sharp claws!
A desperate situation, an unprecedented crisis!
Giro Hando, a man on the verge of death, steeled himself to commit a grave crime and spake thus to you, the amnesiac:
...Kick its ass for me!
But! Despite his fierce resolve,
the sword our brave Giro offered in defiance of the law found no purchase in our amnesiac's fair skin, and was deflected with ease!
I wavered on the scales of my own justice. To be a criminal but a savior, rise to legend yet risk demise...two sides of the coin cast before me. So tested, I answered:
...Let me prove it. That Soul Reapers exist to protect humans!
Yet my courageous blade was turned aside. Stunned silence. A picture-perfect moment!
Heart racing, unwilling to break the law yet even more unwilling to run. Naru's resolve was as clearly displayed as her chest,
It's go time! Take alllll my Spiritual Pressure!
Risking her life, her advance was nonetheless rebuffed, a cruel fate for a lovely maiden, but hold your tears, fair Naru!
From a cocoon of blinding light, blade in hand, appeared none other than someone we thought lost half a year prior...
<param=player_first_name> <param=player_family_name>!
Welcome back,<param=player_family_name>.
......
We thought you had died in battle during the Great Soul King Protection War. I'm glad to see you managed to survive in the World of the Living.
Right?♪ It was so unlikely, we didn't even realize it was you at first!
To be fair, I've never met anyone quieter'n you. Never stood out much either.
But you were always so strong. So much so that I couldn't help wanting to cross blades with you myself.
Would you be so kind as to share the details of the battle with me? Preferably over a spar.
Uh...sure...
Sounds like fun! Can I join in?
Of course.
Woohoo!
2. Map 1, stage 2, after the battle
40 linesMany Squad members lost their lives in the Great Soul King Protection War, and Soul Society suffered catastrophic damage.
We must balance our duties in the World of the Living with the reconstruction of Soul Society.
It should go without saying that we have a difficult road ahead of us... However...
<param=player_name>.
Y-Yes ma'am?
First off, I'm glad to see you've returned unharmed.
Thank you.
However, it is uncertain whether you have retained the abilities of an Academy student.
Huh...?
I shall test that. Everyone, it's time for a pop quiz!
Huuuuh?!
Read the questions carefully and select the correct answer.
Aim to answer at least 5 questions correctly.

Hakutomon
Shuwaimon

Eliminate them
Drive them away
Heal them
What is the first stage of a Zanpakuto release called?
Shikai
Bankai
Asauchi
What is the name of the device used by Soul Reapers in the World of the Living to receive communications from Soul Society?

Spirit Particle Conversion Machine
Name that which resides in all living things.
A Soul
A Quincy
An Arrancar
You didn't get a single one... Tell you what, if you can get them all right, I'll give you a Chappy stamp. How's your motivation now?
...Hmm, you're about on Renji's level.
You may need to do some remedial work.
An average score. Focus on improving both your academics and martial abilities.
An average score. Focus on improving both your academics and martial abilities.
A solid grade. Keep this up and continue your studies.
A perfect score. I heard you had amnesia, but it looks like there's nothing to worry about.
3. Map 1, stage 3, after the battle
33 linesI trust you'll all be understanding of the fact that <param=player_family_name> is dealing with a half-year blank period.
Sometimes you must compete, and other times you must learn from each other. Most importantly, you must learn to think for yourselves and make your own decisions.
That's all for this lecture. Next up you'll be practicing the Four Basic Combat Methods.
Yes ma'am!
The Four Basic Combat Methods...
The Four Methods are Zanjutsu, Hakuda, Hoho, and Kido,
said to be the four fundamental combat techniques of a Soul Reaper.
Need me to explain any of them?
What is Zanjutsu?
What is Hakuda?
What is Hoho?
What is Kido?
I think I understand everything.
Zanjutsu is, Schwing! Swish! Slash! A combat technique that uses your Zanpakuto!
Hakuda is, Wham! Bam! Pow! A combat technique that disregards weapons and focuses on striking with your body!
Hoho is, Swish! Fwish! Fshew! A combat movement technique that allows you to quickly position yourself behind your enemy!
Kido is, One! Two! Wham! Bam! Goryu Tenmetsu!
All kinds of spells that use concentrated Spirit Energy fall under this category!
They're broadly divided into Hado and Bakudo.
Training for the Four Basic Combat Methods may be undertaken in whichever order you please.
Make your way over to each training area and follow the directions of the instructor in charge. Good luck.
Alright, finally time for some action. I'll show ya my chops.
You mean the way you got chopped up by that hollow?
Wanna repeat that?
Cut it out, you two. You've been at each other's throats since we enrolled. Aren't you tired of it by now?
We'll be graduating from the Academy before long, and we're heading towards our last practical training.
If we're to be Squad members, we should prioritize helping each other up rather than pulling one another down.
Such eloquence! I agree with our wise Rohbe!
Me too! Let's all just take a deep breath. No fighting allowed!
We need to focus on training and getting passing grades!
I quite agree. And <param=player_family_name>...
It's been way too long. I can't wait to see what you've got.
...Yeah, I'll do my best.
4. Map 1, stage 4, after the battle
43 linesHeh... I've been waiting for this! Zanjutsu drills!
Time to work off all that frustration from studying at a desk.
You sure you'll be able to?
Whaddya mean by that?
Today's instructors are from Squad 11. You will have heard the stories. They are likely to work you over before you work anything off.
Sounds good to me. I'll make sure the mighty warriors of Squad 11 remember my name.
This should be fun.
You two look happy.
Why would I not be? This is the perfect chance to show off my strength to the "combat specialist squad".
You afraid, Daikaku?
I wouldn't say that... I'm afraid of the appetite I'll work up, though.
...Lots of confidence around here.
Oi oi, confidence, you say? From the snot-nosed punks of the Academy?
Third Seat Madarame!
Don't go forgetting about me.
Fifth Seat Ayasegawa! I never dreamed I would get a chance to learn from the two of you!
I like your attitude. What's your name?
I am Kuon Hoshimura. My sole goal is to join Squad 11. Pleased to make your acquaintance.
Well you got spunk, which is good, but you'll have to be strong if you want a shot at joining our squad.
Don't think we'll go easy on you because you're students. I have my pride as a Soul Reaper, after all.
I couldn't be happier to hear that!
Alright, if you're ready, make teams of two and take your marks.
Sohaji, let us enjoy a celebration after our victory.
Nice idea, I could eat a horse!
<param=player_family_name>, I gotta tell ya one thing before we start.
Hm?
All you gotta do is stand right there. I'll flatten anyone they throw our way.
Lucky me.
You're so greedy.
I'll attend your funeral.
[<gender Lucky me. I'll leave it to you then, Hando./Lucky me. I'll leave it to you then, Giro.>]
Yeah, I got this!
You're so greedy.
What can I say? I gotta show off for Squad 11.
[<gender Not like you'd hold back even if they weren't here./Not like you'd hold back even if they weren't here.>]
'Course. My only setting is full steam ahead.
Let's do this the same as always, then.
I'll attend your funeral.
Haha... Let's do this.
Alright, begin!
Yes, sir!
5. Map 1, stage 5, before the battle
3 linesFirst up, you'll learn how to do combo attacks with your Zanpakuto!
Now you might be thinking that sounds perfect for overwhelming opponents, no?
But nothing's that simple. We want you to learn both the pros and cons through practice.
6. Map 1, stage 5, after the battle
6 linesThat was a good match.
If you could even call it a match.
Our match ended much more quickly, did it not, Sohaji?
It was over in one second.
Huh?! <param=player_family_name>, we're gonna win in zero seconds next time, got it?!
Zero seconds...?
7. Map 1, stage 9, before the battle
3 linesThe next thing I want you to focus on is keeping the right amount of distance from your enemy.
Combo attacks aren't just about hitting your opponent. Feinting and forcing your enemy to retreat can also be an effective strategy.
I don't want to make a habit of teaching such a reserved fighting style but you guys gotta know how to fight smart!
8. Map 1, stage 9, after the battle
5 linesFeinting an attack and forcing a retreat... Yeah, that seems like it might be useful.
You think so? I ain't interested. If you want your opponent to fall back, just smack 'em with your sword and send 'em flying.
You'll end up in an early grave if you continue to fight like that, you know.
Always remember to manage your distance.
Tch.
9. Map 1, stage 10, after the battle
16 linesAlright! We've got nothing left to teach you!
I can see that you're all quite skilled already.
But that's to be expected of the Academy's top class this close to graduation, I suppose.
Don't forget! A real fight ain't anything like these little mock battles between trainees.
That's why we're gonna test to see if you can put what you learned into practice. Personally.
No way, we're gonna throw down with Third Seat Madarame and Fifth Seat Ayasegawa?
Third Seat Madarame!
H-Hoshimura?
I wish to accept that challenge.
You've got guts, Hoshimura.
I'll be your opponent. One on one.
Dueling Fifth Seat Ayasegawa?! Somebody, please pinch me!
Impressive. Your Spiritual Pressure is a blend of beauty and madness...
......
...and you will need every ounce of it to face me.
I'll give you everything I've got!
10. Map 1, stage 11, after the battle
13 linesBlades down!
That was thrilling, thank you.
Once more, please.
You're done for today.
What do you mean...?
He means we already understand how strong you are.
Even after going at it with Yumichika, you aren't even out of breath. You've clearly been training hard.
Plus, you didn't so much as blink in the face of my strikes.
You were clearly determined to study every single one of my attacks as you received them.
......
That kind of crazy is perfect for Squad 11.
...I agree, sir!
Heh.
11. Map 1, stage 12, before the battle
7 linesNow it's my turn to pick an opponent.
<param=player_family_name>, Hando! You're fighting me.
!
I'm especially curious about you, <param=player_family_name>.
What you've been up to in the World of the Living is a hot topic among the other Squad members.
Really...?
Don't worry. This won't take long.
12. Map 1, stage 13, after the battle
39 lines*pant* *pant*
...He's damn strong...
That all you got?! You can't seriously be planning to join the Court Guards with Zanjutsu like that!
......
Dammit...
No need to feel so down.
...?
At the start of the match Ikkaku said it wouldn't take long, remember?
But look at how things turned out. You two were a fun enough challenge to make him unleash his Shikai.
I'd say that qualifies you as excellent practice partners, wouldn't you agree?
...Hey, don't clue them in.
F-For real?
Well yeah. More or less.
<param=player_family_name>, looks like we're pretty badass.
Are we, though...?
You're alright. But...
Hando, you make too many reckless charges.
Thanks for the advice, sir!
<param=player_family_name>.. I can't explain it, but you should have some more in the tank.
I get the same feeling. It's almost like...you're suppressing your power.
No way, I could never fight the two of you while holding back.
So you're doing it unconsciously... In that case, there may be some mental barrier you'll need to overcome.
What squad are you two aiming for?
I'm aiming for Squad 7.
For me...
I'm set on Squad 11.
I'm still thinking about it.
I'm set on Squad 11.
Oho, you do have some guts. We'd definitely be the best squad to smash through that mental barrier Yumichika mentioned.
I'm still thinking about it.
Yes, it's best to think carefully, and while your preferences will be taken into account, in the end the higher-ups are the ones who'll make the final decision.
It's true that our squad prioritizes swordsmanship over the ability to think things over rationally.
But that might be just what you need to break down that barrier of yours. So give us some thought, okay?
Yes, of course.
That's all for Zanjutsu drills!
Everyone make sure to keep practicing on your own.
Yes, sir!
Third Seat Madarame, Fifth Seat Ayasegawa, thank you!
Thank you very much!
13. Map 2, stage 1, after the battle
45 linesSquad 2 Captain, Soi Fon.
And I'm,
And this lump is Omaeda, who has graciously volunteered to be a practice dummy for the Academy students' Hakuda drills.
Huh?!
What's wrong? I distinctly recall you blathering on to Hisagi about how you'd "show those pups who the top dog really is".
You saw that?! If you were there you could've at least said something...
You're wasting time. Hurry it up.
Uh... Ahem! Ladies and gentlemen of the Academy, you stand before the esteemed Squad 2 Lieutenant, Marechiyo Yoshiayamenosuke Nikkotaroemon Omaeda.
Too long.
Hurk, !
Is Lieutenant Omaeda going to be alright...?
That was Squad 2's famous "Maeda-Fon" comedy duo.
Famous, huh...?
What was that for?! The trainees are watching, you know...
That's exactly why I did it.
Huh...? Oh!
What is Hakuda? You there, explain.
...Yes, ma'am.
Captain Soi Fon's precise, needle-like attack... Omaeda's ability to defend against even an unexpected strike...
Hakuda's foundation...is the combination of offense and defense.
Correct. Always keep that in mind. Now, we'll begin the lesson.
Yes, ma'am!
Captain Soi Fon's confidence is almost electrifying, huh?
She seems a bit too harsh on Lieutenant Omaeda, though...
No no, that's the good stuff.
Gocho... You've got some creepy tastes.
Oh come on... You get it, right, <param=player_family_name>?
Creepy indeed.
Agreed.
......
Creepy indeed.
Et tu...? Is there no one out there who understands me...?
Agreed.
Haha, my comrade!
[<gender No, I'm agreeing with Sanakura./No, I'm agreeing with Kanuka.>]
Hmph... You two are no fun. Oh well, just means there's more for me.
That's creepy too.
......
......?
Takes all sorts, I guess.
That's it? What was that pause for?!
Well, I was trying to be nice, but the more I thought about it, "creepy" really is the best way to describe it...
You don't need to double down!
Alright! Next pair is <param=player_family_name> and Tokishima.
Yes, ma'am!
14. Map 2, stage 2, before the battle
3 linesHakuda is founded on close-quarters combat. Get within reach of your opponent and attack.
Strike first to gain the upper hand.
You need to master the three-hit combo.
15. Map 2, stage 2, after the battle
7 linesOoh, that was pretty good.
[<gender You weren't too bad yourself, Tokishima./You weren't too bad yourself, Maiko.>]
Despite being a dyed-in-the-wool tech enthusiast, Tokishima is surprisingly good at Hakuda.
Weapons can break or run out of ammunition. There will always be times when you can only rely on your own body.
I see... I wonder if I should call you overly-cautious...or well-prepared.
When your life's on the line, you need to account for every possibility. Right, Kanuka?
...Um...Sure?
16. Map 2, stage 7, before the battle
5 linesNext, we'll practice footwork suited for Hakuda.
Taking a blow will distance you from your opponent and delay your opportunity to counterattack.
To prevent this, try to avoid attacks as much as possible.
You'll want to stick close to your opponent while you fight.
The best way to close distance or evade attacks is with Hoho, in other words, you'll need to work on your Flash Step.
17. Map 2, stage 7, after the battle
7 linesFighting while sticking close to your opponent... That doesn't sound easy.
Maybe try emulating our questionable friend Gocho here and the suspicious way his gaze sticks to people.
Gocho's gaze... Yeah, I think I kind of get it now.
Blimey, mate, throw me a bone!
...Is that a fake accent...? Creepy.
Sod it, there's no pleasing you!
...I was just kidding.
18. Map 2, stage 12, after the battle
22 linesThe results of your daily training has clearly born fruit. There were no overwhelming victories or defeats among today's bouts.
You should all be rejoicing! Getting a compliment from Captain Soi Fon is rare, indeed!
No, you just never do anything worth complimenting.
Ouch!
Ignore him. ...... <param=player_family_name>.
Y-Yes, ma'am?
Have you practiced any kind of martial art?
...None in particular. Is there a problem...?
No, your stance just reminded me of a martial art called "karate" practiced in the World of the Living.
Now that you mention it...
You also caught my eye, Tokishima.
Me, ma'am?
You frequently incorporate backhand strikes into your attack patterns. A habit of yours?
Wow, Captain Soi Fon, you truly live up to your reputation! I'm honored that you noticed!
I've practiced my backhand strikes against the rocks in my family's garden since I was a kid. I keep my chops and palm strikes hidden as the aces up my sleeve.
I see. However, you must train regularly to prevent your techniques from dulling. You won't want to be rusty during a real battle.
This may be a drill, but I want to see you give it your all.
Thank you for your instruction, ma'am!
Alright, <param=player_family_name> and Tokishima, I will be your next opponent.
Huh?!
Why are YOU surprised?!
S-Sorry!
19. Map 2, stage 14, after the battle
34 linesAnd...stop!
Whew...
Captain Soi Fon is so strong and fast... We had the numbers on our side, but it sure didn't feel like it...
Sometimes it takes more than numbers. Maybe you two should train by chasing cats.
That's what the Captain does when Lady Yoruichi isn't arou,
, ghurk!
Ahaha...
You two fought well. Both your offense and defense are sufficient for actual combat.
Thank you very much.
But <param=player_family_name>, you...
Yes?
No, I'm imagining things. Keep it up.
Yes, ma'am!
Incidentally, which squad are you all aiming to join?
Squad 1 for me.
I'm aiming for Captain Kurotsuchi's Squad 12!
And you, <param=player_family_name>?
For me...
I'm set on Squad 2.
I'm still thinking about it.
I'm set on Squad 2.
Oho! You've got keen intuition!
Squad 2 is the cream of the crop among the Thirteen Court Guard Squads!
We've got a gorgeous, fully stocked, and recently renovated barracks!
And if you join now, you can become one of the magnanimous Omaeda's personal subordina,
<param=player_family_name>, if you truly wish to join Squad 2, we shall not turn you away. Keep that in mind.
Thank you very much!
I'm still thinking about it.
I see. It's an important decision that will determine your future as a Squad member. There's no need to rush.
Can't you see the majesty of Squad 2 just by looking at me?! I'll be waiting for you to come to your senses and join us.
G-Got it...
That will be all for Hakuda drills!
Captain Soi Fon, thank you!
Thank you ma'am!
20. Map 3, stage 1, after the battle
37 linesAlright, that should cover it! Everyone do your best.
...What do you mean "that should cover it"?! You haven't explained anything!
I'm sure they know the basics already. These guys are nearly graduates, after all.
Plus, they had that look. Y'know, the one that screams "Oh wow is that Lieutenant Hinamori? I'm so lucky!" so I thought I'd ease the tension a bit.
You're always so serious, Momo. That's your strong point, though.
Thank you. ...Wait, don't try to change the subject!
Shoot, thought I had you there... No big deal, serious it is. You there with the glasses, Tasuku Nimura.
Yes, sir.
What is Kido?
Kido is a high-level spell that requires Spirit Energy to cast. It can be broadly divided into Hado and Bakudo.
There exist other subcategories within Bakudo, such as Kaido, as well.
Textbook. Okay, Mizuki Gandera!
Yes, sir!
What're the characteristics of the three types of Kido we just mentioned?
Hado is used for direct attacks, Bakudo is used for defense and restricting enemy movement, and Kaido is used for healing.
Gold star. Right, Momo?
Exactly!
Next up, I'm going to need you all to form pairs.
She may not look it, but Momo here is a Kido master. She's gonna be real picky about your results.
Throw out a shabby spell and she'll send you ass over teakettle, so no slacking.
Yes, sir!
I will do no such thing! Geez, Captain, what are you on about?!
AAAAURGH!
Are you alright, Captain Hirako?!
I'm done for... It's all up to you now. Tell everyone...the killer was Momo...
Captaaaaiiiin!
Hey! Why is everyone taking you seriously?!
That was a bad hit... Right in the Soul Sleep...
How about you stay asleep forever?
Now, this might come as a surprise given how much Captain Hirako loves joking around, but he's very attentive to his comrades.
I'm sure he'll be watching over this training from the world beyond.
This IS the world beyond!
Sorry for making you worry, Gandera.
Th-That's okay!
Mizzy, did you really think Captain Hirako was on death's door?
No, I was just going along with his joke...
Ahem! Alright everyone, let's start our Kido drills!
21. Map 3, stage 2, before the battle
7 linesFor the first round, we'll gauge your combat ability with Hado, Bakudo and Kaido.
When attacking, please use Hado Number 31: Shakkaho and Number 33: Sokatsui.
In addition to attacking from afar, you can also restrain your opponent and restrict their movement. Doing so lets you fight at your preferred distance.
Use Bakudo Number 4: Hainawa to halt your opponent's movement.
While your opponent is immobilized, you can take the chance to land a series of strikes.
On the defensive side of things, you can use Kaido to heal yourself after suffering an enemy attack.
Alright, runts, show us what you got.
22. Map 3, stage 3, after the battle
5 linesI was kinda nervous, but that actually went super well!
Using Eishohaki lowers your Kido's attack power but can be effective when attacking in rapid succession.
Moves like these which ignore the user's physical strength might be more of a fit for me than swordplay.
True. Adding to your arsenal of Kido and combining them with your speed might be a winning strategy for you.
Well, I do wanna get stronger. Let's keep it going!
23. Map 3, stage 9, after the battle
8 linesNimura, your Spiritual Pressure is always so stable. That must be why your Kido is so precise and consistent.
What kind of daily training are you doing?
...I don't do anything special. I've just been attending classes and training like everyone else.
I see... Then it must be because of your strong will. I'll have to try to strengthen mine.
I think you're strong enough already, Gandera. In all aspects.
Y-You think? ...But I'm not really doing anything special either.
I guess I should thank my parents for raising me right.
Guess so.
24. Map 3, stage 10, before the battle
4 linesNext, instead of Kido versus Kido, we'll go over how to face opponents using Zanjutsu or Hakuda.
Unlike Zanjutsu and Hakuda, Kido requires a slight delay before it can be unleashed. If an enemy closes in on you, that "slight delay" might just kill you.
That's why you must do everything in your power to prevent your opponent from closing the gap.
Rather than simply trying to get an attack in, use Kido to restrain your opponent instead.
25. Map 3, stage 10, after the battle
6 linesNice, <param=player_first_name>! We're on a roll!
[<gender Yeah. Looks like you have a real talent for Kido, Jurinna./Yeah. Looks like you have a real talent for Kido, Naru.>]
Really? I guess I never noticed.
You gather your Spirit Energy pretty quickly and you've got good aim.
Naru is delicate yet refined, like a flower, so rather than focusing on bladework, learning a variety of Kido might yield some good results.
Whaaat? Everyone's really talking me up, huh? What a hype squad!
26. Map 3, stage 15, after the battle
14 linesCaptain, everyone performed above expectations.
True. And good kids deserve a treat.
Eh? A treat...?
Hey Jurinna and <param=player_family_name>, c'mere.
Yes?
Out of everyone I've seen today, your Kido is a cut above.
For realsies?
Yep. You did good.
Which means that your next opponent is me.
Huh?!
Show me the full extent of your Kido. Without the training wheels.
Don't hold back... We're gonna have ourselves a proper throwdown.
[<gender ...Let's do this, Jurinna./...Let's do this, Naru.>]
...It's go time!
27. Map 3, stage 17, after the battle
50 linesLet's call it there!
Whew...
*pant* *pant*
How was that? Enough of a challenge?
I think I did okay...but I used way too much Kido, I'm pooped...
Captain Hirako was going easy on us and I could barely keep up with him...
Oh, so humble! Very cute.
Momo, how did they look to you?
Jurinna, you certainly have a talent for Kido, but your Spirit Energy and physical stamina are still lacking.
...Gotcha...
Your agility and acceleration are impressive though, so think about how you can further improve those areas.
Will do!
[<gender <param=player_family_name>, you seem to be well-balanced in the Four Basic Combat Methods, but I get the impression you're unable to bring out your true power./<param=player_family_name>, you seem to be well-balanced in the Four Basic Combat Methods, but I get the impression you're unable to bring out your true power.>]
My true power, ma'am?
I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but it feels like you have some kind of hidden Spiritual Pressure within you.
Well, <param=player_family_name> went through a lot recently and just resolved some memory issues. Might not be ship-shape yet.
...Right.
I'm sure you'll be back to normal soon. Don't worry about it, just focus on your training.
Understood!
By the way, have you all given any thought to which Squad you're aiming for?
I haven't made up my mind yet.
For me...
I'm set on Squad 5.
I'm still thinking about it.
I'm set on Squad 5.
Oho, and why's that?
...I can't really say for sure, but I guess it feels kinda...nostalgic?
Nostalgic? Odd thing to say...
But, well, Momo's real great with Kido, so learning under her could do you a world of good.
I'm still thinking about it.
You too?!
Sorry...
Don't get all serious, I was just joking around.
Right...
Well, for everyone's consideration, I'd like to wrap this up by promoting our squad.
Here, read this aloud, would you?
Ah, of course. The kind of people we're looking for at Squad 5 are...
1. Energetic people. 2. People who aren't traitors.
3. Squad 2 Captain Soi Fon has a bowl cut.
(A bowl cut?!)
Hey, Captain! What are you making me read?!
Hahahaha.
Making you? You said it of your own free will.
Wrong! Don't go causing misunderstandings!
Well, this is a pretty good example of what we're usually like. If you're bound for our squad, I'm sure we'll get along. Don't fret.
Yes, sir!
Kido practice is now concluded!
Captain Hirako and Lieutenant Hinamori, thank you!
Thank you very much!
Aaand, dismissed!
28. Map 4, stage 1, after the battle
20 linesHeads up!
Woah!
I've never seen a blade handled with such speed and power!
Shikai?!
Eeek!
Enough.
Sir!
This...IS the Hoho practice hall, right...?
Sure is.
Swingin' your sword at us without a word o' warnin' is only funny so long as we still got a head to laugh with.
Survival aside, those unable to dodge attacks will inevitably sustain injuries,
Am I correct, Lieutenant Abarai?
Right. There ain't an enemy out there nice enough to explain what they're doing or pull their first punch.
*Gulp* ...Y'mean Ah really had one foot in the grave there...?
However, everyone was able to avoid being struck. This is sufficient for a passing grade.
Gauging your attack range, evading, positioning for a counterattack, Hoho is the basis for all of these.
So, we're gonna give you reeeal strict Hoho instruction with some two-on-two sword training. Buckle up!
Yes, sir!
29. Map 4, stage 2, before the battle
4 linesDuring battle, you gotta keep the basic directions in mind: forwards, backwards, left, and right.
Move forwards and backwards to adjust your distance from the opponent.
And move left and right when you want to dodge their attacks.
But moving around too much will just tire you out. Be careful.
30. Map 4, stage 2, after the battle
8 linesNice♪ That's some fancy footwork, <param=player_first_name>!
[<gender I thought the way you shifted your center of gravity was pretty good too, Jurinna./I thought the way you shifted your center of gravity was pretty good too, Naru.>]
Naru truly knows how to maintain a loose stance.
A loose stance...
Don't we just make the strongest, and fastest, duo ever?
Hold on a tick. Ain't nobody faster'n me!
Oh, you've said it now! You only saw a little preview of what I can do.♥ I'm about to blow you away.
I admit, you're both quick... But I won't lose to either of you.
31. Map 4, stage 7, before the battle
2 linesNext up you will practice against an enemy who specializes in close-quarters combat. Be aware of the distance you must maintain. It will differ from a sword-wielder.
If it looks like your enemy is gonna use Hakuda, don't let them get close. Protect that gap.
32. Map 4, stage 7, after the battle
8 lines*pant* *pant*
[<gender Jurinna, are you alright?/Naru, are you alright?>]
Mm, I think I got a bit too hyped.
Well you're definitely fast. Doesn't look like you've got the stamina to keep it up, though.
Ah...yes, sir...
There'll be times when you have to fight with all of your Spiritual Pressure. But there could always be more enemies lurking nearby. Don't burn out too quickly.
Be aware of the limits to your Spirit Energy and remember to use the optimal amount for each battle.
Yes, sir!
33. Map 4, stage 8, after the battle
15 linesAlright! We're on a hot streak!
Kajimaru, you have a particular fighting style. It reminds me of a cloudless sky.
Eh? Whazzat s'posed to mean?
To put it nicely, you are undistracted.
An' if'n ya put it not so nicely?
Your head is empty.
Hahahaha, Wait. Ain't that kinda mean, Hatchy?
The ability to react faster than thought and the athleticism to keep pace with those reflexes, that's natural talent.
Huh, sounds pretty cool. Lookit you butterin' me up.
I am complimenting you, yes.
Hahahaha, thankee kindly! Y'ain't no slowpoke yerself, Hatchy.
First time Ah met anyone who could keep up with me.
Haha. I appreciate the flattery.
Ah'm bein' honest. You take me for the flatterin' type?
Hmm... I suppose not.
34. Map 4, stage 13, before the battle
6 linesAlright! You're all movin' pretty good compared to when you started! Which means you're up against me next.
Jurinna and <param=player_family_name>! Got any fight left in you?
...Yes, sir.
I'm...still good to go!
That's what I like to see. It doesn't matter how tired you are, the enemy won't give you a chance to run back home to your mommies. Show me some guts!
Yes, sir!
35. Map 4, stage 14, after the battle
46 linesEnough.
Whew! That was a nice workout. You two got any injuries?
[<gender I'm fine. Jurinna?/I'm fine. Naru?>]
I'm okay... Don't think...I can move though... *pant* *wheeze*
A splendid match. One could easily sense the resolve of not only the participants, but everyone present.
I want you to continue your daily practice in this manner.
Yes, sir!
So what squads do you lot have your sights on?
Weeelll...I'm thinking Squad 10 with Lieutenant Matsumoto might be good, or Squad 1 with Lieutenant Ise, but Squad 2 has Captain Soi Fon, sooo,
I get it, I get it. <param=player_family_name>, what about you?
For me...
I'm set on Squad 6.
I'm still thinking about it.
I'm set on Squad 6.
Our squad? Is that right? I had a feeling you'd say that.
Why is that?
Why...? ...Good question. Uh, I guess...you feel a lot like an old friend of mine?
I...see...
Ichigo... Yeah, you remind me of Ichigo.
Ichigo? You mean, Ichigo Kurosaki? Could you be more specific...?
I dunno, I just get that vibe from you.
That's a good thing. If you're anything like Ichigo, we're gonna get along just fine!
Ah, yes, sir...
Go ahead and join Squad 6. We'll be waiting.
<param=player_family_name>, do not feel overly pressured by Renji's invitation.
As the captain say, huh?
However, if you truly do wish to join Squad 6, we shall welcome you.
...Thank you very much!
I'm still thinking about it.
Taking time to consider your options is prudent.
Well this is just my personal opinion, but outta all the thirteen squads, ours has the best captain. You can take that to the bank.
Understood.
Renji... True or not, there are things one should not say while in the presence of the concerned party.
Captain Kuchiki and Lieutenant Abarai, thank you!
Thank you, sirs!
Whew, I'm beat! And not just my body, but like, my mind too?
I hear ya. It was intense right from the get-go.
Hatchy looks just peachy though.
Hardly. I'm as tired as the rest of you.
You don't LOOK like you've broken a sweat.
That's because I was so nervous my blood ran cold. Here, touch my hand.
...You're freezing.
Right?
Don't "Right?" me! We need to get some hot food in you, stat!
36. Map 5, stage 1, after the battle
31 linesWhew, that was some pretty intense practice.
I didn't do so hot today. Gotta step it up next time!
We only have a few lessons left. Have you decided on what you're going to do next?
You mean, like, which squad I want to join?
[<gender ...Then, uh, Jurinna, which squad do you want to join?/...Then, uh, Naru, which squad do you want to join?>]
Squad 3 with Captain Ohtoribashi and Lieutenant Kira might be nice...
But then I have to consider Captain Hirako's Squad 5... Oh and I've always admired Squad 10's Lieutenant Matsumoto...
Don't just choose whoever has blond hair!
It's not like that. I mean, I didn't even mention Captain Kurotsuchi,
Fool! While he did emit a brilliant glow during the war, his hair color is a resplendent blue, not blond!
Oh, really? Wow! You sure know your stuff Mai-pie. Never underestimate a die-hard Captain Kurotsuchi fan.
Everybody knows that Tokishima has her sights set on Squad 12, but come to think of it, I've never heard why.
Eh...probing for my motives? I can't just tell you willy-nilly...
We're talking about my first love, after all... I might shrivel up from embarrassment!
Whoa, even someone like you can comprehend the concept of romance?!
We're talking about Mai-pie here. There's no way.
Rude.
Wait, so you're telling me you're really in love?! I'm so hyped!
My true love's name...is "Scientific Experimentation"!
Aaand I'm de-hyped... We've heard that one already. So, Go-Cho, which squad do you have your eye on?
...I'm a simple man. Anywhere I can earn a safe, steady paycheck is good enough for me.
Safe? If that's what you're after, why not just scam nobles with a private consulting gig or something?
...Swindling fat cats outta their fortunes with bogus advice DOES sound pretty appealing...
What a lowlife! I should start calling you No-Go-Cho.
Oh, that's not half bad.
...Hehe...
Hey, Kanuka laughed! Did you take a liking to "No-Go-Cho"?
...Yeah...
You got a specific squad in mind, Kanuka?
...Anywhere is fine. As long as I get into the Court Guards...
Good mindset. It's best to temper your expectations. While we can note our preferences, we don't actually get much of a say in our assignment. Plus...
37. Map 5, stage 2, after the battle
216 linesWell done during your lessons on the Four Basic Combat Methods.
Everyone was able to complete their training to our satisfaction. Head Captain Kyoraku conveys his congratulations.
All that remains is the Hollow Subjugation Excursion and the final exam...
But before that, you'll be taking "Professor Shuhei's Thirteen Squads Aptitude Test" today.
Professor Shuhei?
Thirteen Squads Aptitude Test?
Understood.
Professor Shuhei?
I refer to Squad 9's Lieutenant Hisagi.
He writes the "Teach me, Professor Shuhei!!" series in the Seireitei Bulletin.
I'm something of a fan.
Seems like a man of many talents.
That's right. He's Lieutenant of Squad 9, chief editor of the Seireitei Bulletin, and,
One of our regular customers.
Didn't you say your family runs a pawnbroker? Is Lieutenant Hisagi struggling with some kind of debt...?
It would appear that motorcycle maintenance really eats into your savings.
Have you never heard of client confidentiality...?
...Remind me never to borrow money from Sei, no matter how badly I need the cash.
...May I continue?
Thirteen Squads Aptitude Test...
It's something Lieutenant Hisagi came up with, and we have agreed to implement it on a trial basis.
It aims to measure not only your practical ability with the Four Basic Combat Methods, but also how compatible you are with the internal culture of each squad.
How intriguing!
I'm glad you seem interested. Let's continue.
Will we be assigned to a squad based on the results of this test?
Not necessarily, though it will play a role in deciding your assignment.
Please make sure you take this test seriously. Are there any other questions?
Here! What happens if'n we DON'T take it seriously?
...I shall leave that to your imagination.
Yikes... A-Ah'll be good!
Everyone has something to write with, yes? You may begin!
Read the questions and select the answer that applies most to you.
Answer all of the questions to find out which squad best suits you.
Which Soul Reaper fighting style do you want to focus on?
I want to focus on Zanjutsu
I want to focus on Hakuda

Which do you seek, the Ten Blades or the Thirteen Swords?
The Swords of the Court Guard
Squad 1 is led by Head Captain Shunsui Kyoraku.
The former Captain of Squad 1, Shigekuni Genryusai Yamamoto, served since the Court Guards were founded. Due to his guidance, this squad is as strict as it is diligent.
Captain: Soi Fon Lieutenant: Marechiyo Omaeda
Squad 2 is led by Captain Soi Fon, who also serves as the Supreme Commander of the Stealth Force.
This may explain the high number of Squad 2 members skilled in covert operations. Squad duties also include supervision of the Maggot's Nest.
Captain: Rojuro Ohtoribashi Lieutenant: Izuru Kira
Squad 3 is led by Captain Rojuro Ohtoribashi.
The squad lives by the maxim, "Violence should only bring despair,
for it carries darkness and terror, and those who fear it will seek to avoid it."
Captain: Isane Kotetsu Lieutenant: Kiyone Kotetsu
Squad 4 is led by Captain Isane Kotetsu.
In contrast to the other, more combat-oriented squads, Squad 4 is the only squad that specializes in healing and logistics.
They remain at the rear, tasked with medical or relief duties in the event of casualties.
Captain: Shinji Hirako Lieutenant: Momo Hinamori
Squad 5 is led by Captain Shinji Hirako.
Despite the squad's casual atmosphere, all of its members are highly skilled.
Captain: Byakuya Kuchiki Lieutenant: Renji Abarai
Squad 6 is led by Captain Byakuya Kuchiki.
The squad is known for its strict regulations stemming from the Captain's exemplary leadership. An equilibrium is maintained thanks to the Lieutenant's compassion.
Captain: Vacant Lieutenant: Tetsuzaemon Iba
Due to the events of the Great Soul King Protection War, the Captain's seat remains vacant.
This squad attracts affable men who enjoy living unpretentious lives with sincerity and vigor.
Acting Captain: Lisa Yadomaru Lieutenant: Nanao Ise
Due to the previous Captain's transfer to Squad 1, Lisa Yadomaru currently serves as Acting Captain.
Nanao Ise currently holds positions in both Squad 1 and as Lieutenant of Squad 8. Acting Captain Lisa Yadomaru served as the Lieutenant of Squad 8 in the past,
where she held a book club with Lieutenant Ise, the squad's youngest member at the time.
Captain: Kensei Muguruma Super Lieutenant: Mashiro Kuna Lieutenant: Shuhei Hisagi
Squad 9 is led by Captain Kensei Muguruma.
Lieutenant Shuhei Hisagi is also the chief editor of the Seireitei Bulletin.
Captain: Toshiro Hitsugaya Lieutenant: Rangiku Matsumoto
Squad 10 is led by Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya.
Many members of this squad are known for their diligence and work ethic thanks to their prodigious Captain and his hands-on lessons with even the lowest of the rank and file.
Captain: Kenpachi Zaraki Lieutenant: Vacant
Squad 11 is led by Captain Kenpachi Zaraki.
Due to the events of the Great Soul King Protection War, the Lieutenant's seat remains vacant.
The most combat-oriented of the Thirteen Squads. Unruly admirers of Captain Zaraki are drawn here.
Captain: Mayuri Kurotsuchi Lieutenant: Vacant
Squad 12 is led by Mayuri Kurotsuchi.
Due to the events of the Great Soul King Protection War, the Lieutenant's seat remains vacant.
Captain Kurotsuchi chairs the Department of Research & Development which develops new spiritual tools and technology.
Captain: Vacant Lieutenant: Rukia Kuchiki
Due to the events of the Great Soul King Protection War, the Captain's seat remains vacant.
Perhaps owing to the disposition of the previous Captain, Jushiro Ukitake, members of this squad forge unbreakable bonds with one another.
Reckless and ambitious, the restraints of an execution chair suit you well. You deserve imprisonment.
Willful and uncontrollable, you are in need of discipline from a firm superior.
What did you all think of the test?
I imagine some of you received results that matched your preferred squads, while others did not.
First, I want you to think deeply about your results and use them to better understand yourself.
Next, I want you to ask yourself what steps you need to take, or what areas you need to improve,
in order to obtain the results you want.
Finally, I have a message from Head Captain Kyoraku.
......The opening lines consist entirely of irrelevant information, so I will skip to the main body.
"Now, I'm speaking to you all without knowing your faces."
"But it is those very same 'faces' that you must now sell."
"I very much look forward to seeing how much your 'face value' increases by the end of the final exams."
That is all.
38. Map 5, stage 9, after the battle
39 linesMan, I sure didn't expect this kind of aptitude test.
Well, they said it was only for reference, so I decided to just have fun with it.
You say that, but you were glaring at that paper like it insulted your mother. I lost count of how many times you rewrote your answers.
Sh-Shut it!
For tests like these, it's best not to overthink it and answer based on your intuition.
No no no, to produce the result you desire, you simply have to infer the intent behind each question and answer accordingly.
That means you got Squad 12 then, right Mai-pie?
Hehehe... Behold!
For real?
For real...
Chief Editor Hisagi is pretty impressive. He was even able to account for people like Tokishima.
Alright wise guy then what, might I ask, was your result?
......Kurotsuchi Corpse Unit.
...We're birds of a feather.
Is "compatibility" really that big a deal?
Huh?
Shouldn't it be more important to have strengths that any squad can make use of?
You're right.
I'm not so sure.
Hm...
You're right. We should be working to make ourselves more essential.
Good thinkin', Hoshimura!
Alright, Ah'm gonna make sure Ah get into the Stealth Force!
...I feel like you've misunderstood the conversation. But I guess that's fine...
I'm not so sure. I don't think you're wrong, but I think everyone has their own unique strengths and weaknesses...
If you already know what your weaknesses are, then that means you just need to work on them.
Rather than worrying about my weaknesses, I'd rather focus on my strengths.
Yes, I can understand your reasoning, as well.
Hm... Sometimes what you want to do doesn't match up with what's needed from you.
What matters is giving it your all, regardless of the situation you're in...
Didn't take you for the monologuing type.
Oops.
Well, either way it's out of our hands.
What's important is that we polish our skills so we can carry out whatever role we get assigned.
...Rohbe, that's a good way to think about it.
Thanks, Dai.
Alright, shall we call it a night?
Yeah, g'night.
See you tomorrow!
39. Map 5, stage 10, after the battle
14 linesHuh? Dai, the dorms are that way. Are you going out somewhere?
Yeah, an acquaintance asked me to take care of a street slasher in one of the Seireitei's reconstruction zones.
Street slasher...?
Apparently, there have been incidents of citizens being attacked without warning by people wielding blades.
Shouldn't the Thirteen Court Guard Squads be investigating that...?
It hasn't gotten bad enough for the Court Guards to get involved just yet.
They're already stretched thin because of the reconstruction. So I figured I'd patrol around for a bit.
I see. Well... Would you mind if I tagged along?
Huh? You want to help out?
Yeah. Safety in numbers, right?
Thanks, I know I can count on you.
Would you mind if I joined as well?
[<gender Hoshimura?!/, Hoshimura?!, Kuon ?!>]
You did mention safety in numbers, right?
40. Map 5, stage 13, after the battle
16 lines...Whoa, so you come here often to help out with the reconstruction effort? You really take your civic duty seriously, huh?
It's nothing like that. I just wanted the on-site meals.
On-site meals?
Balanced meals for the volunteers. They're rich in flavor and generous in portion size...I can't get enough.
Nonetheless, it's still most commendable. Aiding the citizenry is in line with the ideals of the Court Guards.
...Thanks. By the way, what made you want to come along, Hoshimura?
You think I'd let a slasher fly under my radar?
Their skill, sword techniques...the flurry of blades and blood...
Huh?!
Haha. I meant that in jest.
...It sure didn't SOUND like a joke...
I didn't think so either...
Hm? Did I hear you say something?
Nope, nothing.
Eeeeek!
!!!
41. Map 5, stage 14, before the battle
16 linesOver there!
Help!
Look out!
.........
Are you alright?
Y-Yeah...
I take it you're the slasher?
.........
Dai, take her somewhere safe and make sure she's okay!
On it.
.........
Something's off. This Spiritual Pressure...
...it feels dead somehow!
.........
Get ready!
Born ready.
42. Map 5, stage 14, after the battle
9 lines*pant* *pant*
...I must say, actual combat is an entirely different beast.
Just what was that...?
Let's find out.
!!!
Oh no!
Hyoryusenbi.
...Captain Hitsugaya!
You're Academy students, correct? What are you doing here?
43. Map 5, stage 15, after the battle
30 linesSo, if I understand the situation correctly...you went on patrol after hearing about a street slasher, and ran into that black thing we just saw?
Ye'ffir.
After helping with repairs, Dai always stops by my place and buys a bunch of manju. So I ended up talking to him about it...
I can't praise you for taking independent action without so much as consulting the Academy instructors.
Sorry sir!
But I can't criticize you either.
Huh?
Our Soul Reaper powers and the blades we wield exist to protect and aid the people.
Though your actions were misguided, your hearts were in the right place. Besides...
How could I blame you for accepting a request from someone who makes such delicious manju?
Right? The outer layer is the perfect thickness and they're
, So soft.
The filling is neither too sticky nor too sweet and they have such a
, Refreshing aftertaste.
Captain Hitsugaya...
<param=player_family_name>, you have good taste... I think we'll get along just fine.
I'm honored, sir!
By the way, Captain Hitsugaya, what brought you to this area?
Huh? Ah... Well, I happened to hear some rumors, myself..
...Specifically, I heard that this shop sells delicious manju, and I wanted to buy some for my squad.
Wow, you don't let a single piece of information slip past you.
Mmm... Indeed, one must always be on the lookout. Both for cutthroats and confections.
However...
(What exactly was that black thing back there?)
(Its Spiritual Pressure... I feel like I came across something similar during the war...)
(Should I have captured it instead of defeating it...?)
Captain Hitsugaya, is something wrong?
It's nothing. You three should head back and get some rest.
Matsumoto and I will be in charge of your training tomorrow. Come prepared. I won't go easy on you.
Yes sir!

I wavered on the scales of my own justice. To be a criminal but a savior, rise to legend yet risk demise...two sides of the coin cast before me. So tested, I answered:
