Geronimo

Geronimo was a soldier of the Apaches, one of the native tribes of the North American continent.

His name was originally an Apache word for "one who yawns," but despite this easygoing name his life changed dramatically when he was 20 years old.

When his wife and children were killed by Mexican soldiers, he gave a speech where he vowed vengeance against the Mexican army as a "warrior."

The battle right before his third surrender that is his most famous. Against a force several times his own, he went in alone to attempt to assassinate their commander and succeeded. It has been said that this commander had given instructions to "massacre the Apaches."

Geronimo was by no means a cruel barbarian. He was calm, collected, and cautious. He was willing to surrender, but never willing to give up his pride.

The American government mobilized a force of 5000 men to catch Geronimo and his 35 Apaches.
