How a hit is worked out, class advantage, crits, blocks and healing

Illusion Connect: Re damage formula and battle mechanics

Every hit starts from the attacker's ATK minus the target's DEF, then DMG Rate, the skill's percentage and class advantage multiply it. A crit adds 50% on top, a block takes 30% off. The percentages on each Partner's page are the skill multiplier in step 3.

Damage formula

  1. 1.ATK against DEF

    ATK x ATK Ratio x (1 - target's ATK Reduction) - target's DEF x DEF Ratio x (1 - DEF Penetration)

DEF comes straight off ATK rather than as a percentage, so it matters most against weaker hits. ATK Reduction on the attacker and DEF Penetration are the two stats that shift this step. A hit doesn't drop below 10 damage here unless a battle sets its own floor.
  2. 2.DMG Rate

    x max(1 + DMG Rate - target's DMG RES Rate, 0.1)

The attacker's DMG Rate and the target's DMG RES Rate cancel out point for point. Stacking DMG RES can cut a hit to a tenth, never less.
  3. 3.Skill multiplier

x skill % (the number in the skill text)

"Deals ATK * 160% DMG" means this step is 1.6. It applies after DEF, so a 200% skill against a sturdy target still doubles what gets through. A few skills add a flat amount on top after this step.
  4. 4.Class advantage

    x 1.2, 1.05, 1 or 0.9 (table below)

Attack, Guardian and Sorcerer form a triangle: each deals 1.2x to the class it beats and 0.9x to the one that beats it. Spell and Light deal 1.2x to each other and 1.05x to everyone else. Heal and Summon hit every class evenly.
  5. 5.Crit or block

    crit: x max(1.5 + CRIT Power, 0.5) block: x max(0.7 - Block Power, 0.1)

The crit chance is CRIT Rate minus the target's CRIT RES Rate. Only a hit that doesn't crit can be blocked: the chance is the target's Block Rate minus the attacker's Block RES Rate.
  6. 6.Conditional bonuses

x (1 + bonus) for each that applies

Skills that grow with the attacker's HP, with missing HP, against targets under an HP threshold, or against a single target or the whole enemy side multiply in last. The final number is never below 1.

Class advantage

Rows attack, columns defend. Attack beats Sorcerer, Guardian beats Attack, Sorcerer beats Guardian, Spell beats Light and Light beats Spell.

  • AttackAttack: 1xGuardian: 0.9xSorcerer: 1.2xSpell: 1xLight: 1xHeal: 1xSummon: 1x
  • GuardianAttack: 1.2xGuardian: 1xSorcerer: 0.9xSpell: 1xLight: 1xHeal: 1xSummon: 1x

  • SummonAttack: 1xGuardian: 1xSorcerer: 1xSpell: 1xLight: 1xHeal: 1xSummon: 1x

Healing and effects

  1. 1.Healing

    (ATK x ATK Ratio x skill % + flat) x (1 + healer's healing bonus + target's Recovery Rate)

Heals scale on the healer's ATK, not on HP, and DEF plays no part. Heals can crit too, with the same 1.5x plus CRIT Power.
  2. 2.Effect hit chance

(base chance - 1% per level the target is above the caster) x (1 + Effect Hit - target's Effect RES)

A stun or debuff's listed chance drops by a point for each level the target has over the caster, then Effect Hit and Effect RES scale it. Damage over time and other effect damage grows with Effect Power.

Team Energy

Each Partner has an Energy cost, listed on their page. The team's total against your Max Energy decides a bonus, as the game puts it:

  • When team Total Energy ≤ Max Energy, all allied units get +10% DMG Increase Rate and DMG RES Rate
  • Total Partner Energy can be higher than Max Energy
  • Build books in the upgraded home to increase your Max Total Energy
