The fire crackled softly against the stones of Asgard, yet Ezio could scarcely feel its warmth.

Age had stolen many things from him. Speed.

Certainty ... Lifetimes seemed to pass before his eyes whenever he shut them.

His shadow stretched across the broken ruins, flickering and twisting like fingers grasping.

Ezio lowered his gaze to his own hands. What legacy had they left behind?

The darkness answered with memory.

A noose swayed above a Florentine square.

Three bodies hung beneath it, turning slowly in the wind.

"You were too late."

A gunshot echoed through a villa. An old man staggered forward, one hand pressed against his chest.

"Couldn't save him either."

Brotherhood banners burned against a black sky.

Statues cracked. Sanctuaries fell silent.

The names of dead Assassins drifted through the air like unanswered prayers.

"Everything you touch turns to ash."

The voice came and went like waves against the shore, each accusation breaking louder in his mind.

Here in the ruins of Asgard, Ezio began to falter under the weight of his own Creed.

Beyond the fire, shadows gathered into a silhouette, and the voice returned.

It now spoke deliberately with a heavy tone, like a whisper uttered beside a grave.

"You were taught restraint. Look at the cost of mercy."

The words lingered long after they were spoken.

Ezio looked down at his hands once more.

Hands that had ended tyrants, saved kingdoms, and buried friends.

For the first time, however, these hands seemed old.

A menacing heart pulsed where the shadows had gathered, its wan light radiating like a second flame.

Ezio could make out faces staring back at him through the crimson glow.

His father. Mario. Friends lost to time.

Then the vision changed. Templars. Legions of them.

An endless tide marching across kingdoms, through centuries, through worlds.

He saw cities burning, statues toppled, then finally, the roots of the Yggdrasil tree, fully blackened by corruption.

"Every creed is a chain dressed as wisdom.

Break it, Ezio ... become truth."

In this moment, his was no longer a choice between light and dark, but between old and new; between staying himself and becoming something this world demanded.

Instinctively, he reached forth. His father's white robes disintegrated into ash as darkness sank deep into his being.

Like ink through water, it gathered into a mantle blacker than the night sky.

Ezio felt immensely powerful, yet with it came all his rage, regret, and every memory he had spent his lifetime mastering.

Excruciatingly, Ezio absorbed them all. He was every scar, every loss, every sacrifice given form.

Under the moon of a foreign land, a new truth dawned on him: Even the Creed was bound by its own words.

"Nothing is true. Everything is permitted."
