A member of the Imperial Guard of Yalnor, Preter's role back home in the Old Empire was to cater to the whims of an emperor maddened by the loss of his realms and power.

Whenever he could, he would take a boat down the golden rivers from Summertime Palace toward an idyllic hamlet not far from the borders of the empire, where he had grown up with his childhood sweetheart, playing games in the surrounding emerald-green woodland as children and courting with trips into town as teenagers.

One autumnal evening as the leaves were beginning to turn amber and the sun cast streaks of fire in the dusk sky, a messenger rode into the hamlet and called upon all men in service of the emperor to return to Summertime Palace to embark on a campaign of reconquest.

Preter assented, but before he set out for war, he married his love under the boughs of a yew tree.

Returning to the hamlet from the doomed campaign, one of the few on the frontline to survive, Preter found his hometown had been destroyed during the conflict, with corpses strewn on the ashen barley fields but no sign of his wife.
