Lappland

Lappland

5-starGuardS tier

Introduction

Lappland is a 5-star character in Arknights. Lappland's class is Guard. Faction: Siracusa.

On our Arknights tier list Lappland is S tier, 13th of the 293 characters ranked, from where 13 current tier lists put Lappland.

Is Lappland good?

Lappland reaches two tiles ahead as a ranged Guard, which means she can also tag flying enemies most melee Guards can't touch. Her talent strips certain special abilities off whatever she hits, so things like a Bombtail Devil's death explosion just don't happen, and Skill 2 turns her normal attack into a two-target arts hit with excellent clear speed once you unlock it at Elite 1.

She's rated S on our list; the trick with her is that she still connects from behind a Defender, so you can slot her in as a damage dealer without giving up a melee tile, and her ability negation makes certain nasty enemies far less dangerous.

Strengths

  • Ranged attack reaches two tiles and hits flying enemies
  • Talent shuts off specific enemy abilities on hit
  • Skill 2 gives strong two-target arts damage and fast clearing
  • Still attacks normally from behind a Defender

Background

LOR-X: The smith thought long and hard before crafting the weapon.

The head of Famiglia Saluzzo had approached in person, requesting a unique weapon for his daughter.

He accepted the commission not only out of respect for the famiglia's influence—

The swordsmith from Higashi believed that a blade reflects one's soul, and to wield one is to grasp one's destiny.

He once forged a nodachi requiring the strength of five men; of course, the samurai who wielded it was invincible on the battlefield, yet was plagued by injuries in his old age, eventually taking his own life due to that festering anger towards himself.

He once forged a splendorous and dignified blade concealing a razor edge for a rare king.

The weapon granted the king an aura of gravitas that permeated the land, and the king never had to wield it against any enemy throughout his entire life.

He once wished to demonstrate his loyalty to Signora Sicilia like the others, yet was rejected nonchalantly.

It was then he came to understand how she ruled this country replete with violence, as well as the weariness and helplessness she hid.

But now, he had no idea what sort of fangs this strange young wolf should bear.

An exquisite rapier, because she would inherit her father's eccentricity and elusiveness?

A deadly great-axe, because she could not ignore the call of the wild in her blood?

No, neither would suffice. The smith tossed the half-finished weapon into the furnace's flames.

She was cruel, elegant and elusive as her father, yet something altogether different.

"It's still not ready? My dear father did say to wait until my coming-of-age ceremony, but our enemies wish to see it tonight."

The swordsmith explained that he was trying to forge a blade worthy of her.

But the more he racked his brain, the harder it became to imagine what such a weapon would actually look like.

"How about these?"

She haphazardly picked up a pair of swords.

Once upon a time, he had hoped to create a weapon that would serve as a testament to his skill.

This pair of swords had demanded too much of his ingenuity, becoming more and more complex in the process.

They sufficed as a conduit for Arts, but had become terribly unwieldy in the process, unable to even be sheathed.

"A failure, destined to never be completed?" The white wolf waved the blades around and bared a smile—"I think I like the sound of that."

The smith pleaded that her unique soul deserved a weapon far more special.

"I'm afraid you have the wrong idea, sir.

What I came here for was a tool. These are sturdy, and more than suitable to kill with.

I like the craftsmanship, and plan to keep using them.

That's good enough for me."

The despairing smith could do nothing but watch her leave.

Perhaps, his finest work was something he had rejected as a failure.

Perhaps, any soul that could be defined by a weapon was too empty to begin with.

That night, the renowned swordsmith announced his retirement, and Lappland of Famiglia Saluzzo wielded her iconic blades for the first time—

From that day on, the people would call them "The Young Fang."

She is named after a province in Sweden and a region in Finland (often anglicized as Lapland, or Sápmi/Sámi by local language).

It is worth noting that the term is sometimes considered derogatory by the Sámi people, similar to a racial slur.

This applies mostly to referring to the Sámi people as "Lapps", a term that is often, likely erroneously, conflated with the Sámi.

Referring to the area as "Lapland" is commonplace and not considered derogatory.

Her family surname, Saluzzo, is the name of a town in Piedmont, Italy.

Lappland has the traits of the now-extinct Newfoundland wolf, notably a slender built when compared to other Lupo characters and white/gray hairs.

This makes her one of the three, technically four, operators who are based on an extinct animal.

The others are Texas, her alter Texas the Omertosa and Passenger.

This is confirmed by the number "1911" on Lappland's belt which can be seen in her Elite 2 artwork, referring to the year when the last known Newfoundland wolf was killed.

This also makes Lappland to draw an odd dichotomy with Texas, who is named after the now-extinct Texas wolf.

The crystal lupine figure shown in Lappland's Elite 2 artwork might be modeled after the Newfoundland wolf.
