Is Meri Laine good?

Meri Laine fills a meter called the Pengqueen Booster through her core attack and second basic skill, and her ultimate unlocks a booster mode that upgrades that same basic skill into a mobile version she can use while walking. Her first basic skill spreads Winter Chill, and hitting a chilled target with her core attack or second basic skill chains into extra effects.

It's a layered kit built entirely around setting up and exploiting that one debuff.

Strengths

  • Booster mode lets her move while using her upgraded basic skill
  • Winter Chill setup chains into multiple bonus effects on follow-up hits

Background

Meri Laine is a playable Hunter in Solo Leveling: ARISE.

She is an Elemental Stacker-class fighter who focuses on sustained damage through stacking effects and aggressive melee attacks.

Using her ice-infused weapon, she builds up damage over time while switching between combat modes to increase her output.

Unlike more precise stackers, Meri excels at overwhelming enemies with continuous pressure and area attacks, gaining momentum as her effects stack and peak during short burst windows.

A rookie hunter of the Richter Guild. Despite her slender frame, she wields a massive saw-type weapon.

Dossier #01: Milliana Shelley

Milliana Shelley was a girl who didn't believe in "happiness."

Born once, adopted three times, and rejected twice, she returned repeatedly to the orphanage's icy rooms, each time facing the director's sighs and bitter words.

But that doesn't mean she was an exceptionally peculiar child.

On the contrary, she possessed talents that could rightly earn her the title of "genius."

Whether it was piano or language, she learned and mastered them all.

Within months, she went from reading children's stories to novels, then even to entire legal texts.

If anyone deserved to be called a genius for possessing "extraordinary talent," that word clearly existed for Milliana Shelley.

Sadly, her exceptional abilities did little to aid her adoption.

On the year she turned eight, Milliana left the city of her birth and was adopted into a small house in a foreign land.

Welcome, Meri.

The couple, wearing gentle smiles, held the little girl close.

Dossier #02: A Warm Home

After learning that her friends at the orphanage had called her "Penguin," the couple not only welcomed Meri with warm cocoa and sweet snacks, but with a room full of penguin dolls.

Now officially renamed "Meri Lane," the child formerly known as Milliana "Penguin" Shelley stayed wary of the couple for some time.

Many adults appeared kind at first, only to change without warning, after all.

She carefully saved the alloance they gave her and, on the day she finally got her citizenship, she stared at the forms as if she intended to memorize every detail.

It was the spring she turned twelve. Her adoptive father was teaching Meri to ride a bike.

He tried to catch her as she was about to fall, but ended up tumbling across the lawn, rolling far beyond her.

He injured his back and went to the hospital the next day covered in pain patches, and spent another month recovering.

Yet all he had to say was that Meri's biking skills had improved.

That winter, Meri Laine finally laid down her guard.

She was willing to accept that they truly loved her.

It was natural for her to find adapting a little difficult at first, but that was a problem time would solve.

Meri began speaking more freely and even used money her adoptive parents gave her to get in touch with her friends from the orphanage.

She also heard that some of them had "awakened" and had become hunters.

Dossier #03: The Road to the Reunion

The year Meri turned eighteen, she received word that her friends from the orphanage settled into a certain "guild." It was a guild active in Germany.

The Laine couple added a stop in Germany to their business trip for Meri to meet with her friends.

Hearing them say how wonderful it would be for the whole family to spend Christmas there made Meri smile sincerely...

for the first time in a long while.

She wasted no time sending word to her friends.

"I can't wait to see you all."

She prayed that her friends were becoming "good adults" after getting jobs as hunters.

By the time they reached Germany, the cold of winter was already upon them.

In the calm but bustling holiday crowds, Meri and the Laine couple stood waiting for her friends.

Ten minutes, thirty minutes... even three hours went by, yet no one appeared.

Meri hung her head in disappointment, and just as the Laine couple, flustered, glanced away for a moment...

A strong force grabbed Meri and sent her soaring into the sky.

Dossier #04: A Reunion, and a New Encounter

A piercing scream rang out, the Laine couple's gentle hands brushed against her as she slipped form their grasp.

The icy wind whipped past Meri's ears.

Meri regained consciousness when familiar voices reached her ears.

She saw familiar faces, too: huddled together like penguins, talking loudly and excitedly.

They were her friends from the orphanage.

They smiled brightly and asked about Meri's well-being.

Then, they quickly added that Meri had been "brainwashed." They explained that the Laine couple had actually been preventing her from "awakening" and had kept her from becoming an independent hunter.

Naturally, Meri couldn't believe what they were saying, yet her friends kept repeating phrases as if they were the ones who were brainwashed.

And stepping forward from among them came a strange man.

"So you've reunited with your friends."

Meri stumbled backwards.

"Happiness alone cannot trigger an awakening."

"Discontent, defeat, despair, and worst possible situations...

trials and suffering. All of that is what gives birth to a strong hunter."

His yellow eyes flicked back and forth, like a reptile or insect.

His piercing gaze scanned Meri.

Dossier #05: The Snowstorm Girl

Fora bout three days, Meri fought against his mind control.

After about a week, she understood it was hopeless.

After another two weeks, she obeyed without question.

She couldn't refuse his orders. Naturally, she ate, slept, and lived in the factory, taking part in his crimes.

On a cold winter morning, the car carrying them came to a stop near a bank on the city's outskirts.

Meri heard several gunshots ring out, followed by sirens.

Soon the van sped off, now carrying the children who returned and a few heavy bags.

"Jump."

The man's yellow eyes gleamed, and Ludwig, who had last closed the van door, opened it and jumped out.

Meri met his empty gaze.

The thud of someone rolling form the car echoed as the van door shut, sirens fading into the distance.

They reached the abandoned factory, and the children carried the bags as though it were a simple chore.

Meri felt as if a blizzard was raging inside her head.

Instinctively, her body lunged forward and grabbed the sharpest tool in the abandoned factory.

The chainsaw motor roared to life, and the man and his group began shouting in panic.

Dossier #06: Merry as a Laine

YOU MONSTER!

When Meri came to, everything around her was in chaos.

The man with yellow eyes crawled on the ground, looking up at her with fear as he yelled.

She knew that she was the monster in question.

"...Something's wrong about her."

"She's nothing like kids her age... She's a little monster."

During her first adoption, she was obedient and tried to please everyone.

But she wasn't exactly "normal." Her foster parents sent Meri back.

"Monster!"

During her second adoption, the parents who said they liked her for being clever, but even they ultimately grew weary of her special talents.

Meri thought: is a monster all I'll ever be?

"Yeah. I am a monster."

Then someone took the chainsaw from Meri's hands.

With a gentle touch, the man lifted the heavy saw and shook his head.

"You can stop now, Meri."

Soon, the Laine couple came rushing in from behind.

Even wrapped in their warm embrace and surrounded by muffled sobs, Meri instinctively flinched.

"Meri, I'm sorry it took us so long!"

"Meri, are you okay?!"

Under the direction of the man with the gentle voice, several people started clearing the scene.

In the distance, the bell tolling midnight sounded through the night.

"Merry Christmas".

Meri bursts into tears. Despite the horrors she'd faced, she had finally gotten what she'd always wanted for Christmas: a real family.
