Ethan hits everything within his attack range and dodges half of the physical and Arts attacks aimed at him, all while having a block count of zero, which sounds like a downside but actually keeps melee enemies from ever targeting him at all. Fancy Maneuvers boosts his damage against high-DEF enemies, and Entwined can lock enemies in place for stalling, especially paired with Suspended Cross, though on its own the proc chance is too low to count on.
