As I gingerly waded through the gloom of the Public Address room, a complicated jungle network of pipe horns gradually came into view.

The room was nothing short of creepy - eerie sounds could be heard from the depths of the stalks of each pipe and clashed together into an unnerving ambiance, and in the corner of the room, there was a small mound of... things that were no longer individually identifiable, with their shadows melding into one another.

It wasn't long before I noticed a stark ray of sunshine that somehow managed to squeeze past the thickets to shine upon the room.

Though it was only a single sliver of a ray, the light was so blinding that I had to squint to look more closely.

Public Address Room

Deee...ire... nd... to the meas...re of... des...rrrrrrre...

The figure caught in the sunlight seemed to be this floor's manager.

Nestled under his birdcage, he was quietly watching an object that was fluttering...

... within the bars of his blanket.

???

Regular, precise footsteps... yet there's palpable hunger beneath the rustle of your cloth.

You must be the one the rumors were whispering about. The one who seeks to create an outfit not bound by affiliation or trends.

Le Kaki

Uhh... I guess that's me?

The Public Address Room's heard about me, too? It almost feels as though I've become some kind of supermodel.

???

So... why have you come to the Public Address Room, where we don't keep even a single strand of thread? I am curious to hear your reasoning.

Le Kaki

Ah, I'm... looking for Miss Alterationist.

I scoured every corner of the third floor in search of the Alterationist, starting with her shop and working my way through the Boutique and the Maison...

... and hadn't found so much as a hint of where she'd gone.

And the last remaining spot was here, the Public Address Room.

I had to get my fabric mended before it frayed further... It was already in a rough state from having to deal with the Rouges on the first floor.

???

Miss Alterationist will return in about a season or two, when the balance of 3F is reasonably restored.

Le Kaki

Phew, that's a relief... I was just here too early, huh? I feared the worst when I saw that she wasn't in her shop.

???

It was a close call, but the red ones didn't manage to take over the Alteration Shop as they did with the Maison.

The Floor Manager took a step toward me, emerging from the blinding sunlight as the outline of his outfit slowly came into view with more clarity.

The first thing I recognized was the multilayered style of the Noir fabric blanketing him like a cloak, appearing quite sturdy and classy even at a glance. At the same time, though, there was something stubborn and stifling about it that seemed to come with the territory.

Le Kaki

Wow... That's some fabric! It's as fine as what the Brand Manager wears for armor!

... But I think it could've used a little leather in the lining, with softer materials and a more colorful palette in general... That could've given it a less stiff look.

It seemed a shame that picking a side meant ironing out so much of what made each style of attire unique and different.

Le Kaki

Come to think of it, I heard you'd opened the path for the Rouges...

So how come you're with Le Noir now?

Le Noir Public Address Room

The Rouges, who used to have nothing but the worn-out broadcast to cling to, have stopped lending their ears ever since their new Voice arrived.

On the other hand, the Noirs, frustrated by the uncertainties of the Obsidian God, now seek his Voice from me.

What can I say? I'm inclined to deliver the Voice to those who would listen.

... Yeah, that adds up. If what I'd heard down on B2F was true, then the Obsidian God has begun to speak less and less frequently to the Noirs, and it's been making them increasingly anxious.

Le Kaki

…….

I don't suppose a broadcast no customer listens to has any meaning.

Le Noir Public Address Room

... Fuhu. Indeed, it is as meaningful as wearing an extraordinarily beautiful outfit without anyone to admire it.

Le Kaki

Oh...

I don't know if it was simply because my eyes had adjusted to the darkness, or because my perspective had changed,

but I suddenly realized that the mound in the corner of the room was actually...

Le Kaki

... A pile of tapes.

A pile of dead tapes, their voices long lost.

Hearing him speak, I felt the sense of dread that arrested me earlier lift from the Public Address Room... and a forlorn sensation fell around the Public Address Room, like I was looking at the remnants of someone's fading world.

Le Kaki

.......

Le Noir Public Address Room

... If more people had been willing to listen, those tapes might still have their voices.

The Floor Manager answered with a smile that looked lonely in a way I couldn't quite place...

And for a little while, we shared a silence that didn't feel so cold.

A little later...

???

Floor Manager, what are you wearing...?

Le Noir Public Address Room

It's been a while.

Footsteps, led by a voracious hunger, broke through - and a group of Rouges entered the room.

Le Rouge

... I've come too late, haven't I?

Le Noir Public Address Room

I'm sorry to say, but yes.

Hesitation and something like regret hung in the air between them. Was that how it was with old business partners who'd ended up on opposite sides?

Le Rouge

Though it is only right that we sever you here, for you have become our enemy... I cannot bring myself to disregard the seasons of contributions you have made to bring peace to us Rouges. So, I would like to make a proposal.

Le Noir Public Address Room

Hm, and what proposal might that be?

Le Rouge

A new Voice is born. Naturally, we would like to deal with the tapes of the old Voice.

Simply hand over the profane tapes of the old Voice, and we need not resort to violence.

Le Noir Public Address Room

That's a rather tall order for something you're calling an offer.

Don't you feel anything? It was once... the song you listened to. The song you followed.

Le Rouge

... Please think of it as our final order.

Le Noir Public Address Room

.......

The Floor Manager appeared to be absorbed in deep thought.

Maybe he too, has a specific voice he wishes to broadcast... just as I wish to design a particular outfit.

A twinkle passed behind his faded jade eye.

Le Noir Public Address Room

"Desire."

Le Rouge

... What is this?

Le Noir Public Address Room

"Desire. And to the measure of your desire..."

The Floor Manager muttered the broadcast I'd heard back in the Boutique du Rouge in a low voice, as though he were speaking to himself.

Le Rouge

... Blasphemy.

Le Noir Public Address Room

... A broadcast once started cannot be stopped, no.

But answer my question, and I will gladly return the old Voices to you.

Le Rouge

... *sigh*

The Rouge visitor's tentacles trembled angrily at this ambush of a quiz.

Le Noir Public Address Room

Do you remember the words of the last Voice to speak in today's broadcast? What came after "Desire. And to the measure of your desire..."?

I'd heard that line before... It's from the broadcast endlessly playing at the Boutique du Rouge.

Le Rouge

"... consume all."

So determined to air the molt of shame we took such pains to bury. I had not realized you were hiding such a cruel streak, Floor Manager.

The cold look that followed was far from pleasing.

Le Rouge

I would like nothing more than to wring those profane horns before devouring them whole, but...

... we have other matters to attend to first.

Just as him and his group of Rouges reached out to grab the tapes from the pipes,

the blanket slammed down between him and his prize, a heavy, metallic clang ringing as it landed.

Le Noir Public Address Room

That was the wrong answer. I'm sorry, but... please go back the way you came.

Le Rouge

Floor Manager... are you implying that I'd forgotten this dark part of our history that I personally placed in your hands?

Le Noir Public Address Room

Well, your memory may exist still... but I don't think you've actually experienced it.

How about you? Why don't you give it a go?

It's an easy question for anyone who'd been paying attention to the broadcast.

Le Kaki

Y-you want me to answer?

... and just like that, the ball was in my court.

Le Kaki

Um, okay... So... "Desire, and to the measure of your desire..." And, uh, next is...

But the Rouge visitor answered correctly.

There were other lines in the broadcast too, but this was one of the more frequently repeated ones. I'd be surprised if anyone in Le Rouge got it wrong.

Le Kaki

"The more shall your self become..."? No, "consume all" should be it...

Even I could easily remember what followed, and I could count the times I'd heard the whole thing on one hand. It was always "consume all," just like the Rouge visitor said.

Though, in today's broadcast, the tape wore out before the Voice could finish -

... Wait a minute.

Le Kaki

In today's broadcast, what came after that line...

... was nothing.

The tape stretched out at the end, and we didn't get to hear what came next.

Hearing my answer, the Floor Manager beamed, striking the kind of smile I hadn't seen since I'd entered this department store.

Le Noir Public Address Room

Bingo.

Le Rouge

Enough of this ridiculous riddle...

At that, like a chorus responding, the black pipe horns of the room began to quiver violently,

and out poured screams, frustration, laughter... the noises that had been slumbering within the Grand Magasin.

The shrieking din ripped the Rouges to shreds before the blanket crushed them,

and if any of them managed to survive that pandemonium, the black hands reaching out from the Floor Manager's draping sleeves made quick work of them.

Le Noir Public Address Room

... Phew. Ha ha...

Silence returned only after the long, screaming echoes dissipated.

And in that silence, I...

Le Noir Public Address Room

Hmm... Are there any intact eyeballs to gather after that whole fiasco?

Le Kaki

Yeah, some... The rest have exploded, though...

... I rummaged around the crushed flesh and crimson leather, searching for eyeballs to salvage.

Le Kaki

10... 20... looks like I've picked up about 60. It's not a lot, but even scrap cloth can make a birdcage if there's enough of it. Every little bit helps, right?

The Floor Manager watched me for a moment before letting out a brief chuckle.

Le Noir Public Address Room

Then perhaps... I ought to give you a reward for listening as well.

Le Kaki

Whoa, thanks. I think this is the first time anyone's given me a gift in the Grand Magasin.

With the Floor Manager seeing me off, I made it through the hallway around the roaming Mobile-Go-Spins, and opened my hand to check out his gift.

It was a gold-feathered tape from inside his blanket, napping soundly in my palm.

I reached out with my other hand and stroked it carefully. Its cozy warmth gently traveled up my fingers.

Le Kaki

It's so warm... And shiny, too...

While I was happy to have a new companion, I wasn't sure if I could care for it when I'd just barely learned how to take care of myself...

Heck, I didn't even know the first thing about raising a tape, either. Whatever gladness it made me feel was preceded by concerns about whether I had what it takes to look after it.

Le Kaki

.......

But it didn't take long before I was able to decide on what to do with it.

Le Kaki

... Ah.

I think I'll...

... use it to make a folding fan.
