In a memory as hazy as a dream,

I went up and down the floors of the Grand Magasin with others at my side, with a virtue whose sheen had not yet faded draped over my shoulder.

There were people who would now and then turn to look back at me as I followed them. Sometimes, they would even kneel down so our eyes would be level.

As I walked with them, the hunger receded so deeply into a corner of my mind, as though it had never been there.

And yet, when I reached the very end, I chose to stay.

Because there was simply too much laid out before me. Too much that I felt I had to take care of myself.

As dictated by the hunger I'd carried since birth, as demanded by my own nature, I reached for the jumble of plates.

*crunch*

And always, with that sound, the memory breaks off.

The Crimson God

To be "born again..."

Could this be something the sunlight left behind?

Le Kaki

Could be. Going by the name at the end, anyway.

I can't make heads or tails of it, so... perhaps it's about the world outside?

The Crimson God

.......

Didn't you come from the "outside" yourself?

Le Kaki

Well, yeah, but... I'm not really sure.

The "outside"... it feels like something from ages ago now. I can't even remember what it was like.

Oh, but I do remember having friends, though.

The Crimson God

Friends...?

Le Kaki

Well, you trust each other, and you're there for each other... They're, um... Oh! "People." That's right. I'm talking about people.

But my friends aren't here, and now I've got something more important to focus on anyway.

You see, I've got to make something beautiful - clothes I can really be happy with.

The Crimson God

You wanted to make beautiful clothes last season... and even now, you still want the same thing.

Why is it... that you want to make them?

Le Kaki

Um... Well, because it'd be nice! Being able to make clothes that pretty, I mean.

Besides, I've never made clothes as pretty as the ones I'm planning to make. Heck, I never would've gotten the chance my whole life if I hadn't come to this department store!

The Crimson God

If you choose to follow me, that is, the Voice of the Rouges... You can make pretty clothes whenever you like.

Le Kaki

Hmm... I guess so. But I don't think they'd be the kind of "pretty" I have in mind.

I like it when the red and the black work together a bit more. With a bit of purple mixed in... and a touch of gold to set it off!

And when that's finished, I'd like to try my hand at something else. Something I've never done before.

The Crimson God

But wouldn't that be difficult? Here, you buy clothes, sell them, make them, wear them... There isn't anything else.

Le Kaki

.......

Even if that's all there is... I still want to try something else.

Maybe that won't be all there is anymore if I were to try something different.

Le Noir Brand Manager

'Twere best to secure the raw ingredients for our garments ere our foes lay claim to them.

Let us recall in advance the clothes that shall fall out of fashion next season...

The Crimson God

That won't make any difference.

All the ingredients in the Grand Magasin won't help them if they have no actual material to work with.

Making fashionable new pieces we like and putting them up for sale matters, of course, but winning over new customers that way takes several seasons.

So, while the Noirs turn their Mannequins to the exit, the Rouges keep them close... as materials to be worked on.

Le Noir and Le Rouge may set the pace in the Grand Magasin. But when all is said and done, the majority decides what is in fashion.

Thus, with the advantage of numbers on the Rouges' side, I need only seize the chance to remodel the Maison du Noir on the third floor into Boutique du Rouge.

Le Noir Brand Manager

Is it not plain what those profane ones scheme, gathering their ranks upon the third floor?

They must intend to slay the Alterationist, who weaveth for us armors of Golden Fabric.

Dispatch more sales associates to the third floor. See that more customers are drawn unto our stores.

The Crimson God

The growth of Boutique du Rouge on the third floor has been hampered? That's okay.

They should be able to hold out for 2 seasons at least, even with increased customer inflow on Le Noir's side.

Though one cannot overlook the close ties that exist, not all who twine threads and weave fabric are aligned with Le Noir.

For they too, under the shower of sunlight, have faced their immanent yearning... and possess a desire for the Golden.

As long as they see worthiness in the value Le Rouge pursues, cooperation is possible.

The Crimson God

The Alterationist is the only one who can weave the fabric, yes...

... but what will she - or anyone, for that matter - weave fabric from, if there are no threads to be used for it?

I harvested some Golden Hide from the walls. They were to be goods for the transaction, to be carried downstairs by the Rouges who have heard my Voice.

If we cut off Le Noir's thread supply line, there should be no need for us to waste our strength severing the Alterationist.

Besides, this deal will gain Le Rouge a new ally in the B2F Floor Manager.

Overwhelming victory followed overwhelming victory in Le Rouge's path.

Le Noir's Brand Manager tried everything at her disposal to slow Le Rouge's advent,

but none of her efforts deviated from the margins of my predictions.

And that was why... my anxiety only kept growing as the seasons continued to cycle.

The Obsidian God should also remember what came before the Liquidation...

Then why simply stand by as the Noirs are kept on the back foot?

I never managed to find a satisfying answer to that question...

Le Noir Brand Manager

.......

... even as I led Le Rouge to total victory over Le Noir.

Le Noir Brand Manager

... Thus spake God...

The Crimson God

... that should I be allowed to run rampant, the Grand Magasin will face inevitable depletion. Isn't that right?

And he must have commanded you to stop me by any means, but neglected to tell you whether success was even a possibility.

Driven to the absolute brink, Le Noir laid a do-or-die siege on the Luxury Hall to reclaim it as theirs. Another predictable choice.

They likely chose this particular season to blindside me, but...

... to me, it was just a replication of something I'd already experienced.

The Crimson God

Perhaps this is just another case of "mysterious ways" in which the Obsidian God operates.

I know that Le Noir's Brand Manager has intermittently heard new messages from the Voice, so I don't believe he's disappeared like the Giant of Le Rouge has.

I don't know what your endgame is, Obsidian God...

The hunger surges back, the void once again rushing into me relentlessly.

And just as it once had, the wishes and expectations of the Rouges fill me from head to toe with nary a bit of breathing room.

The Crimson God

... but first, I shall devour all that lies before me.

Eventually, I depleted the department store. The lessons learned from the first ending spared me the fate of becoming hideously bloated, but that was of no consequence.

The basement floors became nothing but the site of a horrid, endless cycle of death and rebirth...

... and under the fading golden light, the Néants began to appear from the unseen corners of the Grand Magasin.

Within that sequence of events, I came to understand that the Grand Magasin was becoming... incorporated into something.

Seemingly random, partial Liquidations came and went, almost as though the powers that be were testing something. And at the end of each cycle, the department store was left emptier.

And once again, the season changes.

No, this isn't the wheel of seasons. A greater cycle is beginning to turn, ever so slowly...

The Crimson God

... The wheel of Ages.
