The Undiscovered Babylon

The closed paradise turns. White sleeves, sun- dappled afternoons, smiles and laughter. It turns, and turns, and turns again.

1. Scene 1

114 lines

Sing. Sing a hymn in your clearest voice. Isn't it beautiful? Something this beautiful will surely... Reach God? Hehe, don't be silly. No ladder will lift you. The gate to the garden of heaven will not open. But you can be happy. Or at least, you should be. Because this is paradise.

So if you're not...

???

(I can hear crying.) (Who is crying? Why are you crying?) (If there was something I could do...)

Why did it end up like this? This wasn't what I wanted! This wasn't what I wanted at all! Why...

(Who are you?)

(Wait! Where are youโ ...)

(A glowing...cat?)

Mariel

Wait!

???

Wait!

Aldo

What the?

Nona

This place feels different. But why?

Aldo

I don't know. Maybe there's been some change in the White Night Time Layer?

Nona

Well either way, we have to go!

Aldo

Are you really okay now?

Nona

Honestly, you're such a worrywart, Aldo. I told you, I'm fine!

Noahxis

Looks like you've made a decision. Do you want to continue your adventure?

Nona

Of course! I've remembered a few important things. But it's still not enough.

Although, this doesn't mean I'm not scared about what painful truths I'll learn...

Aldo

If only it was all happy memories.

Nona

But I still want to know. I have to know. About myself. About Cochlea.

So I'm going, no matter what awaits me. This is my adventure.

Come on, Aldo! Let's go!

Aldo

Okay!

Noahxis

Lemme take a guess.

"This is my adventure! I'm as ready as I'll ever be!" And so on, and so forth.

Nona

Ha ha ha! Was that supposed to sound like me?

Aldo

I guess we have gotten sort of comfortable with these adventures.

Nona

Nothing wrong with that. Just so long as we don't let our guard down.

Noahxis

It's when you start to normalize the extraordinary and the dangerous that you're at your most vulnerable.

Aldo

That sounded pretty foreboding...

Nona

You are so right though! I'll take that to heart!

Let's go, Aldo! Let's make some good progress this time!

Aldo

Of course!

Nona

We've arrived! But where are we?

Aldo

Is this a forest? I don't recognize the place.

Nona

No, I don't remember seeing any of this at all.

Aldo

We should try to find out where we are... But I don't see any signs of people around. Perhaps we ended up right in the middle of this forest?

Nona

Then let's speak to the animals instead!

Aldo

You can talk to animals?!

Nona

Of course I can't!

You should see your face though! But look!

If we take a good look at the animals, we might be able to tell if there are people nearby...

Whoa?!

???

Aaahhh!

Nona

I'm so sorry! That took me completely by surprise! What was that?

Mariel

Sorry, sorry! That totally took me by surprise! Who goes there?

???

Sorry, sorry! That totally took me by surprise! Who goes there?

Aldo

Mariel, is that you?

Mariel

Aldo?! Fancy running into you here!

Nona

Wha?! A human? And you know her, Aldo?!

Aldo

Yeah... It's kind of a long story.

Mariel

Nice to meet you! I'm Mariel, a priestess in training! And who are you?

Nona

I'm Nona, and I've lost my memory. Nice to meet you, Mariel!

Mariel

I'm sure we're gonna get along great!

Aldo

Actually, Mariel, is that a different outfit? That's not how you looked when we last met...

Mariel, is that you?

Mariel

Aldo?! Fancy running into you here!

Nona

Wha?! A human? And you know her, Aldo?!

Aldo

Yes, this is my friend, Mariel. Mariel, this is Nona. Nona's another friend of mine.

Mariel

Nona! Nice to meet you. I'm Mariel, a priestess in training.

Nona

I'm Nona, and I've lost my memory. Nice to meet you, Mariel!

Mariel

I'm sure we're gonna get along great!

Aldo

Actually, Mariel, is that a different outfit? You look a little different...

Who are you?

???

Huh?! Oh, um...

Mariel

I'm Mariel, a priestess in training at the cathedral of Miglance. But um, one thing led to another, and I ended up running away!

Aldo

Miglance? I'm Aldo, a traveling swordsman. And this is my friend, Nona.

Nona

I'm Nona, and I've lost my memory. Sounds like we've both been through a lot. Nice to meet you, Mariel!

Mariel

So you're Aldo, and Nona! Got it! Nice to meet you both!

Nona

That's such a pretty outfit, Mariel. Is that an apprentice priestess' uniform or something?

Mariel

Oh, um...

I actually just kinda found myself dressed like this. This is the dress of a full-fledged priestess. I shouldn't really be wearing this, as a mere apprentice...

Nona

It's a priestess' outfit? It's so pretty!

Aldo

So you didn't change, you just found yourself dressed this way? How could that happen?

Mariel

This sounds so ridiculous, I wouldn't blame you if you didn't believe me... But I was chasing this glowing cat in my dream, and then I was just...here.

Actually...I think I saw something else, besides the cat...

Nona

A glowing cat?

Mariel

Yes! It should be around here somewhere, surely...

Ah! There it is!

Nona

Oh? It's gone.

Mariel

Do you think it wants us to follow after it?

Aldo

I don't know, but I think we should anyway.

Huh? What the?

Nona

It looks just like the wormhole you made with Ogre Rancorem! How is this possible?

Mariel

Oh! The kitty!

Aldo

It jumped through the wormhole... What was that cat?

Nona

I wonder where the wormhole leads?

Aldo

It's Arat! I can see Arat through there! So was that cat heading for our world?

Nona

Why would it do that?

Aldo

Not a clue. This is all happening too fast.

Looks like this wormhole can take us to the other spacetime. But there's no point returning to Arat now.

Nona

Besides, I'm curious about Mariel's dream. And her outfit change.

A glowing cat? Aldo, are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Mariel

Do you know something about the cat?

Aldo

Yes. We think we may have seen it before. Mariel, could you show us where you first arrived?

Mariel

Sure! It's this way!

Aldo

Look! It's a wormhole!

And I can see Arat through here.

Nona

Last time, the cat opened the wormhole and jumped through. It's got to be the same cat, right?

Aldo

Maybe. I don't see it anywhere, so it must have already jumped through.

Mariel

Huh? So that cat's not in this world anymore?

Aldo

A pillar or light? This should take us to Arat.

Nona

But what should we do? There's no point going back to Arat now. Besides, I'm curious about Mariel's dream. And her outfit change.

Aldo

Me too... Okay, first things first, let's tell Mariel what we're doing here.

Mariel

Yes, please do!

That's some adventure...

Nona

If things go here as they have elsewhere, some tragedy is about to take place.

And we have to stop it. That's why we need to figure out what's going on here as soon as possible.

Mariel

I'll come with you if you think I can help! Besides... I wanna figure out why that glowing cat brought me here. And why I'm dressed like this.

Aldo

You're more than welcome to join us! I know you'll be a great help.

Nona

Two's great, but three's even better!

But this doesn't change the situation we're in. I still don't even know where we are.

Mariel

Nope, me neither. How's about we explore the forest a little?

Aldo

Good idea. But be careful! We don't know what's out there.

3. Scene 3

27 lines
Nona

We've not seen a single soul out here, not for a while.

Mariel

No, but...

Maybe the lack of people is what's making this forest so beautifully mystical! There's so many pretty plants I've never even seen before!

Aldo

Yeah, it sort of feels like we're in a dream.

Nona

I know, right? It's sort of taken me by surprise.

I was prepared for something shocking to happen when we left the vortex. But instead... We're in this peaceful forest, with no one about. It doesn't look like anything's going to happen, does it?

Aldo

No, but there must be a reason why we were sent here. We need to find a clue...

Ah! Over there!

Nona

What is it, Aldo?

Is that...a clock tower?

Great job, Aldo! Wherever there's a building, people must be close by! Come on, you two! Let's go!

Mariel

Yeah, let's go!

Ugh, wha?

Aldo

Mariel?!

What's wrong?

Mariel

I-It's nothing... These images just flashed through my mind...

Nona

Was that...

Mariel

A bell?

Nona

Huh?

Aldo

Were we just caught in a time loop?

Mariel

That was a time loop? But nothing happened...

Nona

No, we didn't witness any deaths this time... So, why? Did people still die, we just didn't see it happen?

Aldo

And Mariel, you were acting strange just before it happened. You said you saw images? Do you remember what you saw?

Mariel

It was all so hazy, but...

I think it was inside some room somewhere.

Nona

I think it might have been inside that clock tower.

Then we need to get to the clock tower as soon as possible! We're sure to find a clue there!

4. Scene 4

99 lines
Nona

I didn't notice when we were looking from a distance...but it looks like the tower's in ruins.

Aldo

It does. And it doesn't look like there's many people about...

Mariel

But we still need to be polite! Let's just knock at the door and...

This song...

Nona

Ooh, it's so pretty.

Mariel

It sounds a bit like the hymn we sing at the Unigan temple... Oh, but maybe I'm just imagining things...

Anyway! If we can hear singing, that means there's someone inside! Let's knock at the door!

Excuse me! Is anyone in there?

Aldo

No reply, huh.

Nona

Perhaps they didn't hear? Why don't I try? I can shout pretty louโ ...

???

Nat, wait!

Nona

Whoa?

Boy

Oh...

My gosh! People! Actual, real, people! And three of 'em!

Hey, what's the old man like?

Has he finally come to see us?

Aldo

Huh? Uncle?

???

Nat! Come here!

Get inside, now! It's dangerous out here!

Nat

S-Sorry... I'm going, Mama.

???

Who are you people? And what brings you here?

Aldo

Oh, umm... We don't mean you any trouble. We got lost in the forest and we were trying to find someone to talk to.

Nona

Yeah, we've been walking and walking for ages, but we couldn't find a single soul out there! We were so excited when we finally spotted this clock tower. We're sorry about scaring you though.

???

...... Did you come from outside?

Aldo

Erm? What do you mean by "outside"?

Mariel

We don't know a thing about this place. We don't even know where we are. Would you mind telling us about it? It doesn't have to be much, just something, anything!

???

......

Then...

Mama?

Tia, don't! Didn't you hear Mama telling off Nat?

Tia

Mama, come back! You can't be out here!

Aldo

H-How many kids are there in this place?

Nona

Don't worry, little one! We're not gonna hurt your mama.

Mariel

Don't cry! Erm...Oh, I know! Peek...a...BOO!

Tia

Teehee... Heeheehee...

Nona

Yay, there's that smile!

???

I understand.

Thank you for comforting her. And I'm the one who should be sorry. Please, come inside. I'm afraid I don't have much to offer, but if you just want to talk, I can help you there.

Nona

Great! Thank you so much!

Aldo

Thanks for trusting us. We'll head inside then.

???

You too, kids.

Nona

Ooh! It's a cute little flower bed! So pretty!

???

Eeep!

No way! Nat wasn't kidding! There's people here, for real?!

What funny clothes they're wearing! They're so cool!

But you're not Uncle, right? Who are you?

Do you know Mama?

Aldo

Whoa, hold on there! We, erm...

???

That's enough, children. You're bothering our guests.

I'm sorry about them. They're just excited. No one's ever come by here before. Oh, allow me to introduce myself.

Marie

I'm Marie. I'm foster mom to all the children of the clock tower.

Aldo

Foster mom? So...

Marie

No, we're not blood-related. All the children here are what you might consider orphans. It's rather complicated, but their birth parents left me to look after them.

???

Mama's super kind! We don't get to see our real moms and dads anymore... But Mama gives us so much love, we don't get sad at all.

Nona

Oh? That's nice.

Marie

They're such lovely children. They look after me as much as the other way around.

Everyone... Let's welcome our visitors.

Why don't you them your names?

Enoch

I'm Enoch!

Nat

Nat!

Liam

L-Liam...

Verdi

I'm Verdi.

Amalie

Amalie.

Tia

Tia!

Andre

I'm Andre.

Serena

Um... Serena.

Monica

Monica!

Elias

Elias.

Mariel

There's ten of you? What a big family you have!

Serena

What're your names?

Aldo

I'm Aldo. And this is Nona, and this is Mariel.

Andre

Mariel? Whoa, that sounds kinda like Mama's name.

Mariel

Oh, you're right!

Heheh. That makes me sorta happy. Like we've got a bond or something.

Nona

That's great, Mariel! My name's nothing like your Mama's, so you can just call me Nona.

Monica

Nona! Nona, Nona, Nona!

Nona

Ooh you're all so cute!

Nat

Ooh, ooh! I've got a question! Where'd you guys come from? You from outside the island?

Aldo

Outside the island? Is this an island?

Nat

How could you not know that? This is Koto, and we're the only ones who live here!

Marie

Indeed. We are on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, far away from anything. There's no travel between us and the continent or other islands. You're our first ever visitors from the outside.

Mariel

So... How come you're the only ones living here?

Marie

There used to be enough residents here to form a small village. However...

Verdi

Oh! It's time for chores! Let's go!

Monica

Hey, d'you wanna come, too?

Nat

Yeah, come with us! We wanna talk more!

Marie

Shush, we can't ask our visitors to...

Oh, we always do our housework at a set time each day. So...

Aldo

No, we'd be happy to help. Besides, we've still got so much more to talk about.

Right, you two?

Serena

Yayy!

Amalie

Let's all go make dinner!

Marie

I am sorry. I really don't want to detain you too long.

Mariel

Don't worry about it! Nothing brings more joy than being able to help others!

Nona

Ooh, is that one of the teachings from your temple?

Mariel

I mean, it is, but... Teehee. It's also a teaching from someone I adore.

Aldo

You sound so motivated, Mariel. Come on, let's get started!

Mariel

Okay! Let us know if you need any heavy lifting or anything, Marie!

Marie

......

5. Scene 5

35 lines
Aldo

Okay, so what do we need to do for dinner? Peel potatoes? Remove sprouts? That sort of thing?

Tia

What's a potato?

Aldo

You've never heard of a potato? Hm, maybe you have a different cuisine over here.

Enoch

We always cook and eat the food Uncle brings to us.

Mariel

You brought up this "Uncle" before. Who is this guy?

Enoch

Eh? He's just Uncle!

We've never met him, but he always brings Mama a big basket full of food.

Verdi

He brings us the yummiest foods! I just wanna gobble it all up in one go... But he only comes every few days, so we've gotta be good and hold out.

Amalie

We always share it between us. But Mama always gives more to us than she takes herself.

Enoch

So we copy Mama and give more Tia and Liam. They're the littlest here.

Amalie

Teehee. But Mama's always tellin' us how we've gotta eat up...

Nona

Wait, hold on... Are you saying you don't have enough food to go around? And it's always been this way?

Enoch

Huh? Well, yeah! But that's just the way it is. The food on the island...

Marie

There's nothing that humans can eat.

Mariel

Marie! What do you mean?

Marie

The animals, plants, soil, and even the waterโ , everything on the island that we could eat... Has been polluted by some unknown toxin.

It doesn't do any harm to the touch, but ingesting it will cause abnormalities to the body. The people loved this island so much, they held out for as long as they could...

But after much trial and error, I guess they realized they had no future here. One by one, the residents started to leave, until we were the only ones left.

Aldo

That's awful...

Nona

So when you said these children were left to you...

Marie

It was a terrible choice to have to make. So at the very least, I want to make everyone happy.

Mariel

Marie...

Aldo

You said the people loved this island. Is that why you stayed behind?

Marie

...... Heheh. The reason people cannot leave a perishing land is because they see something in it.

Anyway, we're able to live off the supplies he brings us every few days. His food is the only thing that won't make us foam at the mouth.

Mariel

Strange, though... How does this guy manage to get uncontaminated food?

Nona

That's a good question! We should ask him when he turns up! Maybe we'll be able to figure out a solution to all this!

Marie

I'm afraid there's no use in asking. He doesn't talk. He just hands the food over and disappears immediately.

Besides... If there was a way to aid us more completely, a better stockpile, or a more reliable distribution method... He'd already be doing something. The fact that he isn't...means it isn't possible.

Mariel

But...

Tia

Mama? What's for dinner?

Marie

Teehee! Why don't we make your favorite? Chunky soup.

Tia

Yay! I love soup!

Enoch

C'mon, you guys! You've gotta help out, too!

Aldo

R-Right! We're on it!

6. Scene 6

16 lines
Nat

All right! Let's draw some water!

Hey, isn't it Liam's turn today?

Liam

Whaaat?! B-But I don't thinkโ ...

Mariel

Why don't you let me help you?

I'm stronger than I look! Here I go!

Hnnngh!

Phew! There you go!

Liam

W-Wow! That was amazing!

Mariel

Teehee! Thank you! So what's the water for?

Andre

It's drinking water.

Mariel

Drinking water?!

B-But Marie said all the water on the island was toxic!

Andre

Yeah, it is... But for some reason, this water's fine. Whenever we're hungry, we drink this water, and it keeps off the hunger for a while.

Nat

But if you drink too much, your tummy gets so cold it could burst! 'Kay, let's go bring this water to Mama!

Mariel

Got it!

(These children seem so innocent in spite of all this...) (There must be something I can do to help...)

7. Scene 7

30 lines
Nona

Oh no, I think I'm lost! Now, where am I...

Eek?!

Ow ow ow!

Oh no! I must have kicked something!

Monica

You okay, Nona?

Aldo

Nona?! What was all that noise?

Nona

I-I'm okay! But I'm sorry... I tripped over this box and knocked everything out!

Aldo

What is this? It looks like a load of tools?

Elias

Oh, that!

I dunno what it is, but I've seen Mama open it up and mess with whatever's inside.

Serena

Oh yeah, I've seen that, too! She was sighing, and she seemed kinda sad.

Nona

Sad?

Aldo

Ah, look.

There's all kinds of tools, but they're all broken. None of them could be used in this state. Maybe that's why Marie looked sad when she opened the box.

Elias

So if we fix 'em up, Mama will be happy?

Monica

But we can't fix them...

Aldo

Hey, wait...

Aha! There's a sheet of paper at the bottom of the box! It's instructions for the tools.

We should be able to fix them now. It even says how to repair them.

Nona

Great job, Aldo!

Kids

Yay!

Monica

So you can understand those squiggles?

Nona

Squiggles?

Serena

Yeah, the little shapes drawn all over the page.

Aldo

Wait, are you talking about the writing? Marie hasn't taught you how to read yet?

Elias

Writing?

Mama says these squiggles are special pictures. We can't understand them, but Mama can!

Mama's the best. They're special just for her.

Aldo

I-Is that so?

(Grandpa taught Feinne and I to read and write when we were much younger than them...) (Maybe Marie's waiting for them all to get older?)

8. Scene 8

25 lines
Aldo

So we found out a little more about the island and everyone here while helping out with those chores.

Mariel

Our little hosts are all so kind, and such bright children... But this environment they're in is so very heartbreaking.

Nona

But you'd never know from how they act. You'd think they lived in a world without any problems. They're so peaceful and full of love... It's so hard to believe a time loop- inducing tragedy could be about to occur here.

Aldo

We haven't seen Phantom in this spacetime yet. But if anything happens, he'll definitely be involved. We can't let our guards down yet.

Nona

Yeah, you're right.

Aldo

But there's something else on my mind. Everyone here could die, simply because of food shortages.

Mariel

Do you think that could cause a time loop?

Aldo

The spacetime rewinds the moment it veers away from its correct history... So perhaps the death of these people is the thing that goes against its true history. They're able to make ends meet right now, but this "uncle" only comes once every few days. And the children will need more food as they get older.

Mariel

And they don't even have enough to feed all ten children and Marie as it is.

Nona

No...

Ugh! Do you know what we should do? We should change the environment on this island!

Mariel

I was thinking the same thing! I know it won't be easy... But even if we can't do much, even if it's foolhardy to try, I still want to.

No, we HAVE to try. I felt so from the bottom of my heart when I saw those poor children... And when I saw Marie.

Aldo

Marie... She may be older than the children, but she doesn't look old enough to parent all of them. She looks about our age. And yet she's got to take care of ten children, and share food with them.

Nona

I don't know what we can do... But I at least want to give them a filling meal for once. So let's do just that! Until we know what's causing the time loop, we'll be stuck waiting for something to happen anyway.

Mariel

I couldn't agree more! Let's do absolutely everything we can for them!

Aldo

I agree. But what should we do? In an ideal world, we'd find a more stable way for them to get food...

Mariel

Yeah... Hmm... Food...crops...

Ooh, I know! How's about we make them a field? If the plants that grow on the island are all toxic, we could try to cultivate edible crops ourselves!

Nona

A field, huh? Yeah, that's a great idea! We might find the tools we need in that storeroom from earlier!

Aldo

But didn't Marie say the soil was also toxic? So surely if you grow crops in it, they'll be toxic, too.

Mariel

Oh, you're right!

Nona

Hmm...

But they got clean water from that watering hole, right? So maybe there are uncontaminated areas around? We just have to look! Surely it's worth a try at least?

Aldo

Okay, let's do it. We can't give up before we've even started. So we need to look for a suitable area to build a field. And then... We need tools. So we should ask Marie if we can borrow the tools in her storehouse.

9. Scene 9

45 lines
Marie

......

Aldo

Ah! There she is!

Marie

Hello, everyone.

Thank you for all your help before. You've made the children very happy.

Aldo

We were glad to help. It gave us an opportunity to talk to everyone.

Marie

Is that so? Teehee. I think the kids have grown fond of you already.

Mariel

Marie, we were wondering...

Marie

Why would you do all that just for us?

Mariel

Don't say that! We're the ones who came to you for help, in finding out about this place! So let us return the favor! Let us help out you and the children.

Marie

Mariel...

You're all so very kind.

Teehee. It's been so long, I'd almost forgotten what it's like to talk to people other than the children. I feel like I've gone back in time.

Nona

Marie...

Marie

Thank you. Feel free to use anything in the storeroom.

But...I think everything in there is broken.

Aldo

Yeah, but don't worry about that. There were instructions in the toolbox. We'll fix them up somehow.

Marie

Oh, how dependable you are! Thank you, Aldo.

Mariel

Now we just need a place to put the field. Do you know of any good land near here?

Marie

I do. Why don't I take you outโ ...

*cough, cough*

Nona

Marie?! Are you okay?

Marie

I'm...I'm fine. Do excuse me. You shouldn't have to see me this way.

Mariel

Don't say that! Are you unwell or something?

Marie

...... I was just born this way. I'm not as strong as I might be.

Aldo

Maybe you should just stay here then. We can find our way around on our own.

Marie

But...

Nona

Don't worry about it, Marie! We're trying to put you through less trouble, not more! Besides, we're actually pretty good fighters. Right, Aldo?

Aldo

Right. If any monsters turn up, we can take them on.

Marie

Okay...

Teehee. You're all so dependable! But please, don't push yourselves too hard.

Mariel

We won't!

Aldo

Come on, you two. Let's get ready.

Nona

See you later, Marie!

Mariel

Bye!

Marie

Hey, wait!

...Haha. Just be sure to be home for dinner.

Nona

Hm?

Okay!

Marie

......

*cough cough*

Aldo

As we said to Marie... There could be monsters out there, so we'll have to be careful.

Nona

Of course! We've just got to look for somewhere suitable for a field, right?

Mariel

Oh, if we're going to be using tools from the storeroom, we should probably take them with us!

Aldo

Good point. Let's go get the toolbox from the storeroom, then head out to explore.

Nona

I'm so excited! Let's do this!

10. Scene 10

15 lines
Nona

Captain! How about this?

Aldo

Captain? Are you talking to me?

Nona

Teehee. Well you do look the part!

Mariel

Gosh, you're so full of energy, Nona! Isn't this great, Aldo? I mean, Captain Aldo?

Aldo

Not you too, Mariel. *sigh* Fine.

So what did you find, Officer Nona?

Nona

This! Look!

Aldo

Oh, is that a shovel? That would be perfect for plowing up a field!

Mariel

But look. The handle's broken.

Nona

Oh, you're right. We'll have to fix it before we can use it.

Aldo

Okay, I'll just get that piece of paper from the box...

Here we go! It says how to repair the shovel. Looks like we need to collect the materials written here.

Mariel

Amazing! Then we'll be able to use all kinds of tools! Let's go look for these materials for the shovel!

Aldo

And don't forget about the site for the field.

Nona

Come on, team! Let's gather those materials and find our field site!

11. Scene 11

3 lines
Aldo

Hm? What's this?

I think this could make a good shovel handle. It's nice and sturdy, and it's about the right length.

Nona

Really? Then let's use that box to repair it!

12. Scene 12

3 lines
Aldo

There, it's fixed! Now we can use it to dig up the field.

Mariel

And it might come in handy while we explore the forest!

Nona

Okay, now we just need to find a good site for the field!

13. Scene 13

26 lines
Aldo

Hmm... I wonder what kind of land would be suitable for a field?

I don't know enough about farming to be able to tell the quality of the soil just by looking at it. Even more so when the soil and water's so polluted that nothing edible can grow...

Hm?

Is that...

I know where I've seen that! It was growing by the watering hole!

But could that mean...?

Nona

Aldo, what's going on? Did you find something?

Aldo

Yeah! Come over here, you two!

Mariel

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that by the watering hole in front of the clock tower! It looks like a white mineral, but maybe it's some kind of plant?

Nona

And that watering hole is the only place on the island with clean drinking water, right?

Aldo

Right! So if the same plant that grows there is also growing here...

Mariel

Then there's a chance that this area's not contaminated either?

Nona

Hey, yeah! Then that would make this the perfect place for a field!

But, umm...

How exactly do we make a field?

Aldo

You don't know?

There's a lot of rocks around here...

But if we remove any big ones, then plow up the soil with this shovel, I think that should do for a field.

Nona

Ah, so you plow it! I've got it now, Captain! Now we can build a farm in any spacetime that comes our way!

Aldo

I can't imagine this is ever going to come up again...

Mariel

So we use the shovel we repaired earlier to plow the ground, right?

So we use the shovel from the storeroom to plow the ground, right?

So we use the shovel from the storeroom to plow the ground, right?

Aldo

Right. Let's see if it works.

Right. We've already found the materials, so let's try to fix it up.

Right. So first, we've got to find the materials needed to fix it. Let's come back here once we've repaired the shovel.

14. Scene 14

4 lines
Aldo

Okay, let's use this shovel to dig up the field.

If we repair the shovel, we should be able to dig up the field.

Nona

We did it!

Mariel

It looks great! Now let's go back to the clock tower and tell Marie and the kids!

15. Scene 15

74 lines
???

They're baaack!

Nat

Tell us! Tell us! What was the forest like? I so wanna go there...

Verdi

Ugh, cut it out, Nat! Why you gotta be so stubborn?

Tia

We were all waiting for you to come back. It's almost story time! Let's go to the flowers!

Nona

Story time? That sounds like fun!

Elias

Once we've done all our chores, Mama always tells us a story.

Tia

I like the one about the cradle! Come on, Mariel, let's go...

Mariel

Eeep I'm so happy! You're all warm and cute like a little kitty!

Tia

Kitty?

Nat

Hey, guys! Race ya!

Monica

Hey, that's cheating! I'll get you!

Nona

Huh?! I guess we'd better join in the fun!

Aldo

Everyone's so full of life here. It's great to see.

Marie

Oh my...

It looks like we've got some bigger kids joining us today.

Nona

Well now I'm embarrassed.

Marie

There's no need to be embarrassed, Nona. Now, be a good girl and listen up. You too, Aldo and Mariel.

Mariel

I-I will! I'm kinda excited.

Amalie

Teehee. You're so strange!

Tia

Mama! I want the cradle song! The cradle song!

Marie

Very well then...

Now form a circle and close your eyes...

Who sang the song? The children born from cotton. Those wonderful, gentle children. Who does the bird kiss? The boy with the golden eyes. The girl with the smooth hands.

Run, run, run in the forest. Silver fangs, stay away. Who broke the cradle? I will weave the light. I will weave with a loom of twigs.

Who fixed the cradle? Where the gentle child sleeps, steeped in pure light. Who sang the song? The pure song for God, the song of love that echoes through paradise.

And there we have it. It's like a nursery rhyme for the children. It's only a short little song. It probably wasn't very exciting for you three. I do hope it didn't bore you too much.

Aldo

Not at all! Your voice is very calming.

Nona

Yeah, I felt like I was being rocked inside a cradle.

Didn't you, Mariel? Mariel...?

Mariel

Oh, sorry! I was trying to retrace my memory...

Nona

Wh-What d'you mean?

Mariel

It just so happens that... I think I know that story.

Marie

Huh?

Mariel

It's a fable the holy book was based off of...

Oh, the holy book is a collection of teachings from my temple. In the predecessor to this book, there was a story about a child born from a snow-white flower.

Tia

Really? What's the story?

Nat

Yeah! Tell us the story!

Mariel

Teehee. Okay then!

Long, long ago... There was a beautiful flower garden filled with colorful blossoms.

One day, a human child was born from a rare, white flower. All the flowers rejoiced. No human had ever been born of a flower before. To keep their child safe, the flowers flung themselves over its little body, shrouding it in petals. The flowers adored this child, who grew up in a cradle where no light could shine.

But one day, the flowers realized the child was getting weaker. This child, the human incarnation of a flower, could not survive without sunlight.

If they did not do something, the child would surely die. But the flowers of the cradle could not move. So the flowers begged the child to break the cradle and leave that place.

The child shook its head. To do that, the flowers would die. The child didn't want to leave. After hearing the child's reply, the flowers then said... "You have feet, while we do not. Go see the world in our stead."

Crying, the child lovingly began to pick the petals from the flowers, one by one.

Eventually, the sun began to shine through a gap in the cradle, which the child then slipped through.

Out in the world for the first time, the child saw the dazzling sunlight, heard the chirping of the birds... But the child could no longer hear the voices of the flowers.

The child collected the petals and began to weave them, one by one, over and over... Until they eventually formed a sword. The child put this at their waist and began to walk. Embracing in their heart a sword nurtured by pure, vibrant love, the child went out into the world...

And that was the story of the Pure Flower Cradle.

Nona

That was kind of a sad story...

Aldo

Yes, but it was beautiful.

Mariel

It's said that this parable makes the basis of chapter 13, verse 13 of the holy book, The Cradle of Innocence. The message of this story is to not be dependant on affection, but to have the strength to survive alone. In other words, to hold a sword within your heart.

Marie

......

Aldo

A child born from a white flower and children born from cotton? And they both involve a cradle. It does sound a little like Marie's song.

Nat

Nuh-uh!

Monica

In Mama's song, the child stays sleeping in the cradle... But in your story, the child leaves the cradle!

Mariel

Oh... Actually, you make a good point. I'm sorry. I guess I was overthinking it.

Marie

It's okay, you don't need to apologize.

Mariel

That's nice of you to say... So, where did your nursery rhyme come from, Marie?

Marie

This? Oh, I...

Oh, would you look at the time!

Liam

Nap time!

Enoch

Let's go!

Monica

Nona, are you guys gonna nap, too?

Nona

Us?

That's a nice offer, but I'm afraid we've got things to do. We'll come by later if we have time.

Tia

See ya!

Marie

You don't want to sleep yet?

Aldo

No, I think we should explore outside some more. We want to help you out as quickly as possible.

Marie

You're doing so much for us. I'm so sorry about this...

Mariel

Don't worry about it! We want to help!

Marie

Thank you.

But it gets dangerous out there once the sun sets.

Make sure you return when the next bell rings.

Mariel

Got it! We'll listen for it. Aldo, Nona, let's go!

16. Scene 16

7 lines
Aldo

Okay, now that we've got our field prepped, next on the agenda is to grow some crops.

Mariel

I didn't see any seeds or fruits or anything when we were in the forest before.

Aldo

Hmm. We've searched just about everywhere we can get to...

Nona

Oh! I know! There was an area on the way from the vortex to the clock tower where I think we could build a bridge.

Aldo

Good thinking! If we can get across that river, maybe we'll discover something new.

Mariel

We should be able to build a bridge with the right materials!

Aldo

Okay, let's go gather up some bridge materials!

17. Scene 17

3 lines
Aldo

These planks would make great scaffolding for the bridge.

Nona

And there's the perfect amount. I wonder if Marie prepared them for this very purpose?

Mariel

Marie...thank you. We'll use them well.

18. Scene 18

13 lines
Mariel

Eek!

Aldo

Watch out!

It's a monster! And a ferocious one at that!

Nona

It ran away!

Aldo

We're not safe until it's gone for good. After it!

Urgh! It's too fast for us!

Mariel

This is gonna go on forever at this rate! Isn't there some way to stop it?

Nona

Hmm. A way to capture a fleeing enemy...

Oh, I know! Why don't we dig a hole in the ground?

Aldo

So we set a trap? That could work. But where do we put it?

Mariel

Hmm. It seems to run off in a straight line when it's being chased.

So maybe we shout dig the hole somewhere over there?

Aldo

Okay! Let's use that shovel to dig the hole!

19. Scene 19

5 lines
Aldo

Urgh, it's never going to end.

It ran off in the wrong direction...

Nona

Is there nothing we can do to stop it?

Hmm. If we come at the monster from the other side, maybe we can chase it into the hole?

Aldo

Got it! Now we fight!

20. Scene 20

3 lines
Aldo

This looks like vines.

Nona

And there's so many of them!

Mariel

This should be enough to bind together our scaffolding!

21. Scene 21

2 lines
Aldo

Okay, between these planks and vines, I think we're ready to build the bridge.

Nona

Yay! Let's get to it!

22. Scene 22

3 lines
Aldo

Phew, we did it! Now we should be able to cross over the river.

Nona

And that means we can search for some crops for our field!

Mariel

Plus, I think we can make another tool out of the leftover vines.

23. Scene 23

3 lines
Aldo

This looks like some kind of seed.

Mariel

It looks like it's in great condition! The bugs haven't even touched it.

Nona

Yay! Let's go back to the field and plant it!

24. Scene 24

14 lines
Aldo

Okay, let's plant that seed.

Whoa? It's growing so fast!

Mariel

No way?! It's dead already?

Nona

I can't believe this!

Aldo

There's no way anyone can eat this.

But for a plant to grow and die so quickly... That's really not normal, is it?

Mariel

No. Maybe it's got something to do with the unusual environment here on the island?

Aldo

Maybe? Anyway, this seed was no good to us, so I guess we'll have to go lookโ ...

Nona

Huh?

Strange. It looks like some kind of jelly. I think it came from the plant.

Aldo

It doesn't look edible, but it could still come in useful somehow. Let's keep it just in case.

Mariel

Ah! It's time to head back, as promised!

Aldo

That must mean the sun's about to set. Shall we head back for today?

Nona

Yes, we don't want to worry the others.

25. Scene 25

37 lines
Aldo

I hoped we'd get back before the sun set...but it's already nighttime.

Monica

Ooh! Welcome back! Where'd you go?

Nona

We explored the island! We wanted to make you a field to grow food you can eat.

Andre

How d'you make a field? Is it somethin' we canโ ...

Marie

Now, now, children! Our visitors must be tired. Don't pester them so. Now be good boys and girls, and go to bed.

Andre

Yes, Mama.

Tia

Are you gonna stay at home with us?

Mariel

Erm, we wouldn't want to presume...

Aldo

I'm sorry, we didn't think about tonight's sleeping arrangements at all. We're happy to take the space under your roof, if it's available?

Mariel

I'm sorry we stayed so long. We'll take on extra chores tomorrow to pay you back!

Marie

......

Yes, of course. But you don't need to camp in the attic. Would you be okay sharing a room with the children?

Mariel

Of course we would! Thank you so much, Marie!

Tia

Yay! It's a sleepover! Let's go!

Liam

Oh...

Nona

They're so cute! But they all seem wide awake now!

Mariel

They've been so excited the whole time we've been here... They were even enthusiastic about doing chores.

Aldo

For their sakes, we'll have to work even harder from tomorrow.

Nona

Yeah! We need to make good progress toโ ...

Eeek?!

Mariel

Wh-What was that? It sounded like a noise coming from the ceiling...

Nona

Eep! What if it's a ghost?! Do you think this place is haunted?!

Elias

A ghost? What's a ghost?

Amalie

You talking about that noise? Yeah, we hear it every day. Sometimes it sounds even weirder than that. Like a voice or something.

Aldo

A voice? But it's not Marie?

Mariel

E-Even if it's not a ghost... A monster living up there could be just as bad!

Aldo

Yeah, it's certainly a worry. Why don't we go and check it out?

Nona

*gulp* I-I really don't want to see what's up there... But, for the children...

Okay children, we're going to check out what's causing that noise. But it's not safe for you, so be good and go to sleep, okay?

Aldo, Mariel, let's go!

Aldo

Maybe we should speak to Marie about this?

Mariel

Good idea! Let's tell her what's happening and get her to stay with the children.

Serena

There's somethin' kinda...not normal about those guys.

Amalie

Do you think there's some scary person up there? Or a crazy animal or somethin'?

Enoch

If there is, then Mama's in trouble! We've gotta check it out! If we all hold hands, it won't be so scary!

Amalie

O-Okay!

You will be unable to switch between maps for a while.

26. Scene 26

76 lines
Mariel

We went to find Marie...but she wasn't in her room. Where could she be?

Yeah. And what's more...

It sounded like the noise was right above us, but it doesn't look like it was coming from this floor after all.

Nona

No one's here... R-Right?!

???

Ugh...

Nona

Wh-Wh-What was that?! I swear I felt something on my back!

Mariel

Children? What are you doing here?

Did you follow us?

Liam

W-We wanted to protect Mama. But...

Tia

It's so dark an' scary... Waaarghh!

Mariel

D-Don't cry! It's gonna be okay...

Nona

Look at me! Peek-a-boo! Peek-a-boo!

What else can I do? Um...

Hm? (I think I sense something I recognize up there?)

???

What are you doing out here?

Nona

Eeep?!

Mariel

M...Marie! Thank goodness, there you are! You seeโ ...

Marie

Children...

You should all be asleep right now. What are you doing up here? I didn't say you could leave your room. Now go to bed immediately. If you can't sleep, Mama will kiss you goodnight.

Goodnight, my darling children.

Enoch

Fine...

Elias

Sorry, Mama...

Marie

Oh? You're not returning to bed with the others?

Mariel

I'm sorry for trespassing up here! But we heard a strange noise from the floor above...

Nona

We wanted to check it out, in case it was a monster or something. You don't know anything about it?

Marie

A noise? Maybe it was the wind? This clock tower is very old...

Why don't I go and take a look, while you three watch the children? If there is anything dangerous up there...I wouldn't want the children to be on their own.

But it's not safe for you up there alone! At least let me comeโ ...

Marie

Oh my...

Would you like a goodnight kiss as well?

What?! No, that's not what I was getting at, at all!

Marie

Then listen to me. The children are our priority. Besides... The floor above used to be my room. I feel a little uncomfortable about you going up there. Silly, I know. Now, if anything happens, I'll shout out to you. Okay?

Mariel

Well, if you insist...

Marie

Thank you, Mariel. It will be fine. This is my home. If there's anything dangerous, I'll spot it right away.

And if you do, call us immediately. We mean it.

Nona

We'll come running to you!

Marie

I will. Now, go take care of the children. Goodnight and sweet dreams. Oh, and take this lamp. The corridors can be so dark at night.

......

Why are you making noise? I thought I told you, we have outsiders visiting. Can't you at least stop while they're here? If they found out about this...

......

Good. Just don't let them see you. Without me...

You cannot leave this place.

Aldo

Phew, everyone's asleep.

Mariel

That's one less thing to worry about! That just leaves Marie... Maybe we should stay up all night. That way, we can rush to her if anything happens.

Nona

Agreed! Maybe that noise is some kind...of clue...

Hmm?

Aldo

*yawn* I'm so...sleepy... I can't keep my eyes open...

Mariel

Huh? But we JUST said we wouldn't go to sleep tonight...

Aldo

Umumum... *zzz*...

???

Aldo! Wake up!

Aldo

Hmm?

*yawn*... I was out like a light.

Eh? Serena? Did you wake me up?

Serena

Erm, yeah! Morning...

Aldo

Good morning.

Nat

NONA! WAKE UP!!

Nona

Aaarghhh! Stop banging that frying pan! My ears!

Tia

Mariel, it's morning.

Mariel

Oh! Good morning.

Nat

It's late already, sleepyheads! Mama and us've been up for ages!

Aldo

Oh... Sorry.

Tia

Mama said breakfast was ready. Let's go...

Verdi

Whoa!

Elias

He's here?! For real?!

Liam

Nat! Guys! Come over here!

Nat

Wonder what he's fussin' about?

Tia

Let's go find out!

Serena

Okay!

Mariel

I wonder what's going on? The children certainly sounded happy!

Nona

Let's go down andโ ...

Oh no! I've just realized! We fell asleep last night!

Aldo

Oh yeah! No wonder I felt strange when I woke up.

Mariel

To fall asleep so quickly after being so determined not to... Doesn't matter how tired we were from working the field, we totally failed.

Aldo

But at least Marie and the children all seem fine.

Let's go downstairs and ask what happened last night. We also owe her an apology.

You can now switch between maps.

27. Scene 27

48 lines
Aldo

Everyone certainly seems excitable this morning. I wonder what'sโ ...

Mariel

Is that...

Elias

There you guys are! Look! Uncle came!

Mariel

Is that... "Uncle"?!

I-It's nice to meet you! Are you the man who brings the food?

Man

......

Mariel

Is your leg hurt? Please don't over-exert yourself! We canโ ...

Are you all right?!

Take your time getting up! We'll pick up everything that dropped.

Huh? (Am I imagining things or...just for a second there...did the food look like something else?)

Umm, here you go!

Man

......

Mariel

Huh? ("For the children"...?)

Man

......

Mariel

("And"...?)

???

Ivan?!

Marie

What are you doing here?

Mariel

Oh, your basket!

Amalie

You're goin' already?

Aldo

Wait a minute!

Nona

We wanted to ask you something!

Aldo

Where'd he go?

Nona

I don't see him anywhere! But we were right behind him!

He was walking with a limp though, wasn't he? He didn't look well at all. How did he manage to disappear in such a short time?

Aldo

What is going on? And Mariel, were you talking to him? He seemed to respond to you.

Mariel

Yes! Well, sort of. His lips moved, even if no sound came out. He said "for the children" and "and," but then he left as soon as Marie appeared.

Nona

"For the children...and..."? I wonder what he was trying to say?

Aldo

He also didn't seem at all surprised to see us outsiders there.

Hm... Nope, I've got nothing. We should ask him next time we see him, but for now, let's go back inside. I want to find out what happened last night. Marie looked a little pale this morning.

Mariel

You're right, she did. Let's go back.

Nona

Marie!

Marie

You lost him?

Nona

Huh? Um... Yeah, we did actually...

Marie

Oh...

Mariel

But are you okay, Marie? You look a little pale this morning.

Marie

Do I? Oh... I haven't been feeling so well. But it's nothing to worry about.

Mariel

You're not well? Then you should be resting!

And were you okay last night? We fell asleep way too soon.

Aldo

Are you hurt? Is that why you're not feeling so good today?

Nona

And what was causing that noise? If you couldn't get rid of it yourself, we could alwaysโ ...

Marie

Everything's fine. The noise was just some wild birds that had gotten stuck inside. There's nothing to worry about.

Oh, by the way... Will you be going out to the field today?

Aldo

Yes. And we'd like to explore the forest some more. You never know, we might find some other crop seeds.

Nona

There's still further in to explore! There were a few places we'd need tools to reach, but...

Marie

You really are doing so much for us. If there's anything I can do to help, do let me know.

Mariel

Nope! We'll handle the field. You should be resting!

Marie

Teehee. That's sweet of you.

Aldo

Okay, to the forest we go! Let's look for any unexplored areas.

28. Scene 28

17 lines
Aldo

Is this...a lantern?

Nona

A lantern? Oh, thank goodness! Come on, come on! Turn it on already! Quickly!

Aldo

What's the matter, Nona? Why are you so eager to use the lantern?

Nona

Because it's dark, okay? There could be ghosts or something...

Aldo

Oh yeah, I forgot how easily you get scared. But you're right, it is a bit too dark for safe travel. I can barely see the road ahead.

Mariel

But unfortunately, the lantern's broken.

Nona

What?! N-No way... Ooh, I know! Do those instructions say how to fix it?

Mariel

Oh, good idea! Let's see now...

Aha! It does say how to repair a lantern!

Nona

Phew...

Mariel

Okay... Looks like we need something luminous and a cool gel.

Aldo

Cool gel? How about that jelly substance we got from the plant?

Nona

So now, we've just gotta find something that glows?

But where are we gonna find that?

Aldo

Hmm... A glowing thing? Sounds like the kind of thing you'd find somewhere dark.

Mariel

Should we look someplace else that might be darker than this?

Aldo

Yeah. I didn't see anyplace like that around this area, though. Maybe we can find something on the other side of the bridge.

29. Scene 29

6 lines

Found a glowing thing.

Aldo

This is pretty bright! This should light the lantern.

Nona

Yay! Then put it in already! Come on, chop, chop!

Aldo

But it looks pretty hot. Too hot to touch, I'd say.

Nona

Then move the lantern container closer! That way you won't have to touch it!

Aldo

Okay, got it.

30. Scene 30

5 lines
Aldo

That's all the materials we needed. Let's use the toolbox to repair the lantern.

Nona

Careful... Careful...

Aldo

Done! This should make it safer to walk through the darker areas.

Mariel

Then let's go deeper into the cave!

Nona

Thank goodness...

31. Scene 31

9 lines
Nona

Aldo! Mariel! Look over there!

Mariel

That looks like a plant seed!

Aldo

Great! Let's pick it up...

Nona

Wh-What was that?

Aldo

It took the seed? After it, you two!

It seems pretty cautious. Get any closer and it will spot us.

Mariel

Why don't we turn out the lantern?

Aldo

We could, but then we wouldn't be able to see anything either. Okay, let's wait for it to approach us, then turn on the lantern at the last possible moment.

Nona

*shudder* Fine. I-I guess we don't have any other option...

32. Scene 32

7 lines
Aldo

It's gotten too close! Let's go, everyone!

Okay, it's frightened! Attack!

Okay! Now!

No good! We have to pull it in a little closer!

Mariel

There! Enemies!

Aldo

I feel something nearby...

Nona

Eek! Look how close it is!

33. Scene 33

2 lines
Aldo

All right. That's the seed we found.

Nona

Great, now let's get out of here! Time to go plant it!

34. Scene 34

22 lines
Aldo

Okay, let's plant that seed.

Please work this time.

Nona

It looks like it's growing better than last time.

Mariel

Oh... Dead, again.

Aldo

Another failure? This is harder than I thought.

Nona

Oh, look...

This time, it's all sticky. Eww, it's all over my hands now!

Aldo

But it could come in useful, like the jelly did.

Still... It may not have worked, but it did seem to go better than last time.

Mariel

Right! We just need to keep searching. Eventually we'll find something that can grow here.

Nona

We can't give up yet!

Aldo

I guess this means we'll have to search the other parts of the island.

???

Aldo!

Aldo

Serena? Andre? What are you doing out here? Did you come all by yourselves?

Nona

Are you okay? You didn't hurt yourselves, did you?

Serena

No, we're fine!

Mariel

But why are you all the way out here alone? Did something happen?

Andre

Mama's not acting like normal! She locked herself in her room and we can hear wailing from inside...

We all tried talking to her, but she won't say anythin' back. So we broke our promise and came out here to get you.

Mariel

Oh dear! Perhaps her health has taken a turn for the worse?

I'm worried about her! And the children. We'd better go back to the clock tower!

Nona

Agreed!

35. Scene 35

13 lines
Aldo

Okay, we got out of the forest in one piece.

Mariel

I'm so worried about Marie! We've got to get to her room andโ ...

Nona

Huh?

W-Wait, you two! Andre's not here!

Aldo

Oh no, you're right! Could he have gotten lost in the forest?

Mariel

But it's so dangerous out there! We've got to go back and find him!

Aldo

Where could he be? Serena, do you remember when Andre disappeared?

Serena

Andre? What're you talking about? Andre's right here...

Aldo

He is?! Do you mean he went back to the clock tower without us noticing?

Serena

......

Mariel

I didn't see that at all! I thought he was right behind us...

Nona

Perhaps he took a shortcut somewhere?

Aldo

Well, if he's here already, we might as well go inside. I want to see how Marie's doing.

36. Scene 36

62 lines
Aldo

So that was Monica and Elias who just passed us, right? They seemed to be having fun.

Oh, it's the bell.

Serena

...... I've gotta go.

Aldo

Huh? Where are you going?

Serena

I promised Nat I'd fetch water with him like yesterday.

Nona

Oh yeah, this time yesterday was chore time. That was so much fun!

Mariel

Yeah, it was.

Aldo

But before we can do that again, first, we have to see if Marie's okay.

Mariel

Then let's go to her room, quick!

Marie, are you in there? The children told us you weren't coming out of your room...

Aldo

No answer, huh?

Nona

D-Do you think she's so ill she can't even speak?

Mariel

Then we'll just have to open up this door and goโ ...

Marie

Don't come in.

Mariel

M-Marie?!

Nona

What a relief! Well, sort of...

Aldo

Are you okay? The kids are worried about you.

Marie

I'm sorry. I'm fine. I just felt a little tired. I thought it would help to rest a little.

Nona

Marie...

Aldo

Okay. We'll be downstairs. Just call if you need us.

Nona, Mariel, let's go.

Nona

O-Okay...

Mariel

Marie...

Aldo

So that was Amalie and Liam. I wonder why they're all running...

Mariel

It looked like they were playing tag. But I thought they were supposed to be doing chores?

Nona

But I guess Marie's not here to tell them so. While the cat's away, the mice will play... While Marie's resting, we should really watch over the children for her.

Aldo

Agreed. So we should probably talk to Enoch and Verdi.

Nona

Those two did seem the oldest and most sensible of the group.

Mariel

Oh, there they are!

Aldo

Enoch! Verdi! I'm glad we found you. Can we talk to you for a minute? It's about Marie...

So we'd like to leave Marie to rest for a bit.

Nona

We'll help out with the chores! We can do it if we all work together!

Enoch

......

Verdi

......

Aldo

Enoch? Verdi? Something seems off with them...

Mariel

You know, I'm kinda concerned... Where are the other children? It's too quiet in here...

Nona

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen Nat or Tia anywhere. Serena even said she was going to meet with Nat...

Mariel

No... And I don't see Andre, either.

Aldo

Do you two know where the others are?

Enoch

The others?

Verdi

They're right here.

Mariel

Right here?

Aldo

That's what Serena said before! Are they somewhere in the clock tower?

Enoch

They're here. They're all right here.

Verdi

Yes. They're all right here.

Aldo

Cut it out, this is no time for games!

???

There you are...

Nona

Serena? I thought you were looking for Nat?

Serena

Nat's right here.

Nona

Huh?

Enoch

Oh. I promised I'd fetch water with him again today.

Aldo

Really? That's odd, that you'd make the exact same promise as Serena...

Mariel

Actually...I just remembered... It was only Nat, Liam, and Andre who fetched water yesterday!

Aldo

Oh yeah! Enoch was on dinner duty. So why did he say "again"?

Nona

And Serena was tidying the storeroom...

That's odd. That's really odd.

Aldo

Okay, Enoch, Verdi, Serena, we're gonna ask you one more time. Where are Nat and the others?

Enoch

They're all right here with us.

Verdi

They're right here with us.

Aldo

Wait. Why are you all saying the same thing?!

Hey! Wait!

Mariel

After them! Something strange is definitely going on here!

37. Scene 37

Aldo

They went into that room! Let's go!

Nona

Aldo, wait!

Aldo

Amalie? Liam?

What was that sound? I think it came from the room to the left!

Mariel

Let's split up and follow the children! Aldo, you take care of those two!

Aldo

Got it!

Mariel

Are you all okay? Wait, what? It's just you here, Serena? Where're all the others?

Nona

I definitely saw them go in? Are they hiding somewhere?

Serena

......

I'm hungry...

Nona

Eep?!

Mariel

Hey! Wait up!

Aldo

Huh? It's just you in here, Liam? What happened to Amalie? She was with you a moment ago.

Liam

Mama...I'm so hungry...

Aldo

Liam? What the?

Hey, wait up!

Nona! Mariel! What happened with the children?

Nona

We could only find Serena. How about you?

Aldo

Same. Amalie had disappeared. It was just Liam in there. What's going on here?

???

Did something happen?

Aldo

Marie!

Marie

There's been such a commotion outside my room!

Mariel

Marie! It's terrible! The children...

Marie

You can't find the children?!

Aldo

No. We don't know what's going on here, either... But something's definitely wrong. They were all here at first. But one by one, they've been disappearing...

Mariel

It's so unlike them, the only thing I could think is they're playing hide 'n' seek with us...

Marie

...... So where are the remaining children now?

Nona

Mariel and I followed Serena...

Mariel

Oh! I think she went upstairs!

Marie

Upstairs?

No!

Mariel

Marie?

Aldo

After her!

38. Scene 38

Serena

...... ...... I'm sooo hungry...

???

Wait!

Serena

......

Marie

Serena!

Aldo

Marie! Serena! Are you okay?

Marie

Get away, now!

Nona

Get away? From what?

Phantom?!

Aldo

What's Phantom doing here?! Get away from him, Serena! He's bad news!

Serena

...... I'm so hungry...

White Phantom

I know. Go ahead, eat.

Mariel

What...the...?

Nona

No way... Did she just... Eat Phantom? Wait, what's going on?

???

Aaarghhh!

Marie

Why? WHY?!

Why would youโ ...

Aldo

Hrngh!

Andre

Aldo?

Aldo

Wha? Oh...

Marie

Oh dear me... Was my story that boring, Aldo? Teehee.

Nat

Whaa? Nona, you're sweating all over the place! What's wrong?

Nona

Huh? Oh, erm... Umm...

Marie

Are you two okay? I'm sorry if all those chores tired you out.

Mariel

Why...

Marie

Huh?

Mariel

Why, Marie, why?!

Aldo

Mariel!

Mariel

Aldo?

Aldo

I'm sorry, Marie. I guess we're still half-asleep. I think we should go splash some cold water on our faces.

Marie

All of you?

Nona

Hm?

Honestly, Aldo and Mariel! What's with you guys? I'm gonna stay here and listen to the rest of the story! You two take your time.

Aldo

Haha, we will. Then, erm...see you later!

Marie

Hm?

Mariel

Aldo!

Aldo

I-I'm sorry! I am... Look, I understand how you feel, but you've gotta try to calm down, okay?

Mariel

But Marie, she... She...

Aldo

That Marie we just saw wasn't the Marie we saw up in the attic. Time has rewound. Everyone's safe right now, aren't they?

Mariel

The time loop...

But even if time has gone back...

What we saw before DID happen. How can you expect me to stay calm?

Aldo

I know... ......

Terrible as that was, at least we've got some more time now. So let's go back to the top floor.

Mariel

The top floor? You mean...

Aldo

Yes, where Phantom was. He's got to be the one pulling the strings behind this spacetime and the time loop. I don't know if he'll be up there right now, but we should still go there and see if we can talk to him. If we put it off and Marie starts to suspect what we're up to...things could get bad.

Mariel

I guess you're right. Okay. While Nona's keeping them distracted, let's go to the top floor.

39. Scene 39

127 lines
Aldo

Phantom!

White Phantom

Ah, there you are.

I do apologize for this. Such trouble you've been through. I never expected much to change the first time around... Still, this new timeline in which you outsiders intervene is giving me much cause for hope. I must thank you.

But for you, this most have been the most unfortunate discovery. Allow me to apologize. I don't have the strength...

Aldo

What on earth are you talking about?

White Phantom

Ah, I do apologize... So I know you, but you don't know me? Then your reaction is more than understandable.

Mariel

Aldo and Nona told me all about you, White Phantom. You distort the "intended future," you mess with history, and you seek an eternal recurrent spacetime. You create the wrong future over and over in this White Night Time Layer! That's what you do, isn't it?

White Phantom

Indeed. I'm sure that's how my brethren, others of my species who look like me, explained it.

Aldo

What do you mean? You make it sound like...

White Phantom

I am of the same species as those you have met on your travels. We are a group species. We share sensations, memories, thoughts. Our very shape is derived from Chaos. However...

Group beings though we are, we are also individuals. We have our own thoughts, names, and silhouettes. I as an individual may belong to that species, but I am an abnormality. I strayed from their path. I do not share their goals.

Mariel

So...what is your goal?

White Phantom

......

My goal...

Is to ensure that Marie and the ten children of this island are able to survive, and live with dignity. Thus going against the "correct" history of the White Night Time Layer.

Marie

They've been gone a while. Perhaps I should check on them?

Nona

N-No! Don't do that! I-I'm sure they're fine. They're probably just enjoying the cold water.

Marie

Teehee. You are strange, Nona.

Nona

Strange?! Not me! Heheh... ......

(My heart is still racing!) (I can't believe it. Why would Marie...) (Was it a dream? No. Unfortunately, I know all too well that it wasn't...)

Marie

Nona?

Nona

Eep?!

Marie

What's wrong? You look so lost in thought. If there's something on your mind, you can always tell me.

Nona

......

Um, Marie... Do you like everyone?

Marie

The children, you mean? Teehee. What a funny question. I love them all. They're my family.

Nona

Right. Yeah. But... What if... What if someone like...made you really mad?

Marie

Mad? Me?

Nona

N-No. That's not what I meant! Not mad...umm...something else...

This is tough. Um... Why would you get mad in the first place?

Oh? That's a good point. She was angry, not confused. Why wouldn't she be confused?

(It wasn't Serena who got attacked and disappeared, it was Phantom...) (Why would she be so angry at the children?)

Marie

Nona?

Nona

I-It's nothing! Beating around the bush isn't gonna get me anywhere...

Marie

......

Nona...

You had a very scary dream, didn't you?

Nona

D-Dream? No, um... Marie...?

Marie

It's okay. Let's hug it out.

It can be so very relaxing to have your hair stroked. Did you know that? Nice and gentle, like this. When people have bad dreams, they always feel the need to check it's not real. They get so scared, like they're lost in the fog, far away from home. But it's all okay, Nona. There's nothing to be afraid of.

The only time I ever get angry at the children is when they put themselves in danger. I don't think I could bear it if I lost my children. Whatever form it took. If those beautiful, pure children left my side, if their bright eyes were no longer there to look at me... My heart would ache. I wouldn't be able to breathe. The thought alone terrifies me.

I'm sure you feel the same. I know you've come to care for the children. And that must be why you feel so anxious now... Because you dreamed that I got mad at the children, or forced them into something cruel, didn't you?

Nona

N-No, I...

Marie

They are my children. Such a terrible dream could never, ever happen in reality.

There. Are we feeling better? The rosiness has returned to your cheeks.

Nona

Oh...

Heheh. Yeah. Yeah, I am feeling much better. You're right. I just had a bad dream.

Marie

The best way to deal with a scary dream is to go out in the sun, and let it melt it all away.

Amalie

Ooh, is it nap time?

Liam

I'm sleepy, too!

Nona

I know, why don't we all snuggle up together?

(This is strange...) (There's no way Marie would ever stab one of her children. So what was that...)

Mariel

Going against the "correct" history of this time layer...means letting Marie and the children live?

Aldo

I don't understand. This isn't how you usually do things at all. I guess that can be explained by the fact that you're different from the other Phantoms, but still...

Mariel

Wait. There's so much else I want to ask you about, like your relationship with the children... But when you say you're going against the correct history so that they can survive...

......

Are you saying that the correct course of history... Is one where everyone here dies?

White Phantom

No. Their correct future is not one in which they die. The truth is...

Their correct future is one in which they live, suffering a fate worse than death.

Aldo

A fate worse than death? What does that mean?

White Phantom

It's simple, really. They will lose all human dignity, and wander the island as a mindless mass of flesh. As you know, the flora, fauna, soil, and water of this island all contain toxins that cannot be neutralized. The ingested poison accumulates in their bodies, eventually transforming them into grotesque monsters. That is their correct history. Only Marie will get a new life, retaining her human form. But a "human form" is all she will have. She will never be happy. Her form will...no...

In any case... I have been interfering, in the hopes of preventing them from experiencing that "correct future."

Mariel

So you've been through this more than once?

White Phantom

I have done this hundreds of times, but death is the only future that's ever come for them. But when they die, time loops back again, for that is not the correct course of history. I wish to ensure that Marie and the children lose neither their lives, nor their dignity... To give them a future where they can be truly, genuinely happy.

Aldo

Phantom...

Ivan

Call me Ivan.

Aldo

Ivan? Where have I heard that name before?

Man

......

Mariel

Huh? ("For the children"...?)

Man

......

Mariel

("And"...?)

???

Ivan?!

Marie

What are you doing here?

Mariel

So you're the "uncle" who brings food to the clock tower?

Ivan

I am.

Mariel

What were you trying to tell me back then?

Ivan

Do all you can for the children. And Marie.

Mariel

Ivan...

Ivan

It requires a lot of strength to take that form. I was slow to make contact, and far from telling you anything, I couldn't even speak. I apologize. I don't have much time left until this body crumbles away completely. I can't even leave this room...

Mariel

What do you mean? Are you...

Ivan

I'm dying. You saw it, didn't you? That's why you came here in such a panic.

Mariel

*gasp* That? What was that? What was...

Huh? Isn't this... What you gave to Marie and the children?

Ivan

It is my flesh.

Mariel

What?

Aldo

Your...flesh?

Ivan

If you consume the food of this island, sooner or later, the toxins will turn you into a moving corpse. I had no choice but to find another substance that would fill their bellies. So I cut off strips of my own flesh for the children to eat, disguising it so that they wouldn't object. When I appeared before you, I had a limp. In fact, my whole body could barely move. I had shaved away too much of my meat. It was all I could do to keep that form. Now that time has reversed again, I still have a little flesh that I can offer to them.

But I digress. What matters here, is the simple truth that... I am an incarnation of Chaos. Each time they consume my flesh, the children become a little less human. Their consciousnesses join that of my species, and their intense hunger turns them to cannibalism. That is why the children started to disappear. They ate each other and united within one body. Their consciousnesses and memories all mixed together within the last one standing. Almost as if they were transforming into Phantoms themselves...

Aldo

Wait a minute...

Serena

I promised Nat I'd fetch water with him like yesterday.

Aldo

So that was because Andre had promised Nat...and Serena had eaten Andre? And then she ate Enoch and Nat... And so she had their memories?

Ivan

Precisely. And... A body remade from my flesh will keep seeking my flesh and anything alike it. It will keep feeding. I am both parent and food. Try as I might, I could not change this. The children fill their bellies with my meat and go crazy for it. Either I die after slicing away the last of my flesh, or I die as the last meal for the frenzied children. Either way, I die.

Aldo

But you... You said you'd been through this hundreds of times already. Have you really done this every time?

Ivan

Indeed, I have. What if this time, they manage to survive without turning into Phantoms? They ate different amounts the 251st and 252nd times, so maybe they'll have a different future. This time, maybe it will work...

Mariel

I don't believe this! How could you continue to feed the children something you know to be a deadly poison? You know what happens if they eat your flesh! You've seen it yourself, time and time again!

And to give your own FLESH to those children, disguising it as something more appetizing...

Ugh!

Aldo

Mariel...

Mariel

Was it all just a lie? You said you didn't want them to lose their lives or their dignity! That you wanted to give them a future where they could be happy! So what would compel you to do this?! I thought you liked Marie and the kids? That you wanted to save them? Don't you? Don't you want to save them? Why would you think that this was okay?

Ivan

I love them dearly. I don't care if I must sacrifice myself, I don't care if it hurts, so long as they have food. The hundredfold misfortunes I've brought to those children in the pursuit of their true happiness... It's all because I am so very weak. I hang my head in shame. However... I truly do wish to save them.

Mariel

......

Ivan

I have a favor to ask of you. There's only so much I can do for their future. As we talk, I feel my limit approaching. You came from the outside. Perhaps you can bring some kind of change to this closed-off world... Perhaps their future can take on a new shape.

Aldo

......

We'd want to save Marie and the children, whether you asked us to or not. But if you're going to ask a favor, then I want you to promise us something in return.

Don't let the children eat from your body again. For the children's sake, as well as your own.

Ivan

......

Very well. I promise.

Mariel

What about Marie? Does Marie know about all this?

Ivan

She...

Marie

Aldooo? Marieeel?

Aldo

Marie's looking for us!

Ivan

We've been talking too long. Return before she comes here. If you wish to talk again, come see me.

Mariel

But we still haven't...

Aldo

Okay. We'll go back for now. But make sure you keep your promise.

Ivan

I will.

Aldo

Let's go, Mariel.

Ivan

...... Marie...

Aldo

Mariel, are you okay?

Mariel

Yes...

No... I'm sorry. My head's such a mess...

Aldo

It's understandable. If you hadn't lost your cool there, I think I would have.

I still have so many questions, but it's too suspicious if we stay away any longer. Call it a hunch, but... I think it's best Marie if doesn't know that we've met Ivan.

Mariel

Marie... I still can't understand why she did what she did at the end of the last time loop...

Aldo

Well...

There's got to be a reason. We should observe her carefully. I also want to talk to Nona, and fill her in on what we just heard... So let's call Nona and go out to the field. No one will bother us out there.

Mariel

Got it. Let's go.

40. Scene 40

16 lines
Nona

Aldo! Mariel! Welcome back. How did it go?

Aldo

Where's Marie and the children?

Nona

We were all basking in the sun until just now, but then everyone left to do their own thing. I think Marie might have gone to the kitchen.

Aldo

Okay, that's good. Let's head to the field. We need to talk.

Nona

Got it. Let's go right now.

Hold on. I can't get my head wrapped around this. When you came back, I knew from the look on Mariel's face that something was up... But this...

Mariel

I thought that we were on the same page, that we all wanted to save Marie and the children. You've got to be committed to repeat the same thing hundreds of times over, all alone, just to save them. However...

What happened in the previous time loop, and all the hundreds of other horrific endings we never saw... They were all because he fed them his own flesh. It makes me feel sick...

Nona

Me too...

Aldo

We absolutely have to avoid such an unhappy future ever happening again. Somehow or other, we need to get them a food source. If we manage that, then Phantom won't resort to using his own flesh to feed the children... And no one will starve. No one will need to be sad...

Nona

You're right. There must be some kind of clue in this forest! We just have to search every corner of this place!

Aldo

Right. But where should we look? Where haven't we gone yet?

Mariel

How about the forest plateau?

Aldo

The plateau? Oh yeah, it does look like there's an open area up there.

Nona

Great idea! With any luck, there could be another plant growing up there!

Aldo

That's settled then. Okay, now we just need to find a way to get up there.

41. Scene 41

6 lines
Nona

If we climbed up here, we should be able to get to the plateau.

Mariel

But it's way too steep. There's no way we can climb it.

Aldo

True, we'd need some kind of tool. I wonder if we could make one?

Hmm... A grappling hook should work.

Nona

Then a grappling hook we'll make! So as always...

Mariel

Let's get looking for the materials!

42. Scene 42

4 lines
Aldo

Is that...a ship's anchor? What is that doing here?

Mariel

Aldo! I think we could use this as a grappling hook!

Aldo

You're right. It's the perfect size for it!

Nona

Okay, let's make a grappling hook out of this anchor and our other items.

43. Scene 43

10 lines
Aldo

Is this a bone? I wonder if we could use it for something? I guess I'll keep it just in case.

Nona

A-A bone?! Eww! Why would you take that?!

Aldo

Why? Um, because it was there...

Mariel

Actually, there's a lot of bones all over this place. It looks as if some ferocious monster's been feeding here.

Aldo

And I think I know which monster...

Nona

Eeep! That's one scary- looking monster!

Mariel

Oh no! But thanks to that bridge we built, it could get to the clock tower from here! We've got to do something!

Aldo

You're right. We've got to get rid of it.

Nona

But we don't stand a chance going at it head-on. Is there any way to approach without it noticing us?

Aldo

Hmm... There must be a way to get around its blind spot using these tools. Let's try and think...

44. Scene 44

1 lines
Aldo

Guh! It's now or never!

45. Scene 45

7 lines
Aldo

Hm? What's that?

It looks like a seed. Did that monster drop it?

Nona

I'm expecting great things from this one! If that greedy monster had it, that must mean it'll grow into food!

Aldo

Y-You think? It seems a little too good to be true...

Mariel

No, I feel it too. I sense something from this seed. Like a mysterious lifeforce, or something.

Aldo

You too, Mariel?

Okay, let's go back to the field. Please work this time!

46. Scene 46

37 lines
Aldo

Okay, let's plant that seed.

Please! Third time's the charm!

Nona

Come on! You can do it!

Mariel

Pleeease!

Aldo

Huh? It stopped growing?

Nona

So...why'd it stop? Did it work, or...

Mariel

I think so. It didn't grow as miraculously as the others... But it's sprouting, and more importantly, it's not dying. Basically...

Aldo

It worked?!

Nona

For real? We did it?!

Please, little plant! Grow up big and strong, okay?

Mariel

This is such a relief. At the very least, their food worries might be over now.

Aldo

Mariel...

Mariel

Aldo, Nona, we've gotta keep up the good work! Let's get back to searching! Maybe we'll find something else as well!

???

What are you looking for?

Nona

M-Marie? You startled us.

Marie

I made some nice, calming tea for everyone...but when I came back, you were all gone.

I was worried, so came out to look for you.

Aldo

Oh, oops. I'm sorry. We shouldn't have left without saying anything.

Marie

It's fine. Were you talking about the field? I do appreciate your help, but you mustn't wear yourselves out for our sakes.

Nona

Don't worry about it! We just... We really want to help you. So let us do this, okay?

Marie

Thank you.

Mariel?

Mariel

Huh?

Oh... Yes?

Marie

You look a little tired, Mariel. You know, it's almost nap time for the children...

So why don't you come back with me to the clock tower? It would give me someone to talk to. I brewed all this tea, but it seems Aldo and Nona won't be there to drink it. I'll be so lonely all on my own.

So come with me? Unless you don't want to?

Mariel

Of course I...

......

Nona

Um... How about if Aldo went with you instead? He can be a great conversationalist, you know!

Aldo

Huh?!

Oh, um, sure! I can do that! I can tell you tales from my travels. They should keep you entertained.

Marie

......

Teehee. That would make me so happy! I've never been able to talk to kids my own age.

Oh, I'm absolutely spoiled for choice! I don't know how to choose between you! Mariel, Aldo, can I leave the decision to you? I'll be waiting right here.

Aldo

Oh? Um, okay. Mariel, are you okay with this?

Marie

Let me know once you've decided.

47. Scene 47

3 lines
Aldo

Will Mariel be okay? I don't think she's feeling herself yet, and I'm happy to go...

Nona

Yeah... me too. I think I feel the same.

Aldo

Because of how things ended up before... We've got to choose carefully.

48. Scene 48

4 lines
Mariel

My head's still a mess...

But I do want to talk to Marie. About what happened earlier...

Nona

(Mariel's really holding on.) (But if she wants to talk to Marie, it would probably be better if she cooled her head a bit first...)

Mariel

If I hadn't gone, maybe things would have ended up different?

49. Scene 49

42 lines
Marie

So who's coming back to the clock tower with me? Mariel or Aldo?

Your choice

Mariel

Aldo

Think about it.

Who will go back with Marie?

Mariel

I was the one who was invited, so I'll be the one to go. Besides, I was hoping we'd get a chance to talk anyway. So, thank you.

Marie

Ooh, I'm so excited! I just know we'll have a lovely time!

Mariel

I'm sure.

Look after the field for me while I'm gone.

Aldo

We will.

Nona

Have a nice time!

All right! Let's do this! You're with me now, Aldo!

Aldo

Haha, that I am! Thanks, Nona. I don't know where I'd be without your sunny disposition.

Nona

Heheh. It's my one saving grace!

Okay, we've got to use everything we can get our hands on to prevent that terrible future! For Marie and the children!

Mariel

...... (This time, I...)

Aldo

......

I'll go. I think Mariel needs some more fresh air.

Mariel

Huh? Aldo?

Marie

Oh, thank you. Shall we go, then?

Aldo

I'll go. I think Mariel needs some more fresh air.

Marie

Oh, thank you. Shall we go, then?

Mariel

I'm sorry... I wish I wasn't feeling so bad...

Nona

It's not your fault! Let's just do what we can.

Mariel

Okay. If we can just get them some food, then maybe we can fix this...

Nona

Exactly! Let's go looking for things for the field, or any other clues to improve this situation on the island!

Mariel

Okay! Let's go!

I hope Aldo will be okay... Things really took a turn for the worse between me and Marie in the last time loop...

Nona

It's not your fault, Mariel.

I wonder if Marie still thinks of us that way, even in this timeline. I am worried about leaving him alone with her...

But we've gotta trust in Aldo. And in the meantime, we'll just do what we can to help things.

Mariel

Right. If we can just get them some food...

Marie

And how long until your field yields results? And how much would one harvest provide?

Mariel

Let's go looking for things for the field, or any other clues to improve this situation on the island!

Nona

Okay! Let's go explore some more!

Mariel

Then shall we get going?

Nona

Um, sure. But where are we going?

Mariel

Somewhere we haven't explored yet!

Deep in that dark cave!

Nona

Wha?! W-We're going back there?

Fine. I guess we have to...

Marie

No need to rush. I'd be overjoyed to chat with either of you.

50. Scene 50

Nona

Mariel, wait...

Mariel

What is it, Nona?

Nona

I-It's just so dark... I can't go any further...

Mariel

Don't be silly, you'll be fine! I'm right here with you. Just a little further...

Nona

Ugh... I-I know. I've gotta pull myself together...

Right! Let's go! I'm ready to take on anything! Ghosts and all!

B-But please don't be any ghosts about...

51. Scene 51

Nona

Phew! We finally got out of that cave!

Mariel

Ah! Look over there! I can see a little hut in the distance! We might find something there! Let's go!

Nona

Wait up, Mariel! Don't leave me behind!

52. Scene 52

Nona

So how are we going to get up to that hut?

Mariel

Hmm. I don't see any paths leading to the other side...

Nona! Behind you!

Nona

Huh?

Eeep! I-Is it a gh-gh-ghost?

Mariel

Calm down, it's just a monster! Now let's fight!

53. Scene 53

Nona

My poor heart. I can't take much more of this...

Mariel

It looks like that monster was hiding in the brush. The hut shouldn't be too far. Let's get going!

54. Scene 54

Nona

I can't believe there's really a hut in the middle of this forest.

Mariel

Doesn't look like there's anyone here. The whole place is covered in dust. Whoever used to live here probably left the island.

Nona

There's so many books and stacks of paper around.

Maybe they'll hold some kind of clue. Let's get looking.

55. Scene 55

16 lines

Two beds covered in dust. One looks like its wood is slightly newer.

The scent of various medicinal herbs is coming from the barrels. There are some strange crystals and dried out things at the bottom...

Lots of soil, and some dead, dried seed pod remains.

There are a lot of notes with illegible scrawls. There are also a few cooking recipes written out in beautiful handwriting.

It is locked and won't open.

A record written in plant ink on faded paper is bound with thin string.

I had been able to hide it for years, but it seems my luck has finally run out. ยฅ^ Due to my bad arm, it would seem I am not worthy of being a tower defender like my ancestors. ยฅ^ A lucky break. The air over there drives me even crazier than the poison of that island. ยฅ^ I took the books I had hidden, and left the tower on a moonless night. I will never go back there.

Living in the forest was the right choice. No one will visit me here. ยฅ^ How I loathe these people. Vacant, yet zealous. It makes my skin crawl. ยฅ^ The air in the forest is so crisp. One would scarcely believe it's full of poison. There's still too little food, but I feel much better now that I'm alone. ยฅ^ I studying the soil, collect plants, inspect the water, and record it all. It's dull, lonely work, but it suits me well. ยฅ^ If it is successful, great. If it fails and I die, so be it. Even the cold draft coming in through the broken window doesn't bother me. ยฅ^ It proves that I am still sane, and for that, I am grateful.

I lost control. ยฅ^ I found a lost child in the forest. Reluctantly, I took them back to the village. But back in that atmosphere after so long, I lost all control. ยฅ^ Teaching innocent children lies, coloring their clear eyes with fanaticism! It is sinful! I had decided not to get involved, yet I exploded when I saw the children. None heeded my preaching. The parents even threw stones at me. ยฅ^ It's madness. I'd resolved never to do such a stupid thing. I forbade myself from ever leaving the forest again, and returned to my life.

It's terrible. ยฅ^ It was strangely bright outside, so I left the house to see what was going on...and there I saw a child. It was this girl who was shining. ยฅ^ She had collapsed before me. I could hardly leave her there. So I brought her inside. ยฅ^ Her clothes are shabby, her face pale. She doesn't look like a villager. I'm thinking of sending her back when she wakes up, but...

Detailed, daily records about the soil, water, and plant cultivation.

It was easy to identify clean water that was free from those toxins. ยฅ^ If those crystals are nearby, or actually in the water, then it is drinkable. Any toxins in the water will be decomposed and filtrated. ยฅ^ There is no reluctance to drinking water purified by crystals. Ironic, circuitous, but that's all there is to it. ยฅ^ There is hope in sight for my plant cultivation experiments.

If these crystals are near the soil, then naturally filtered water will permeate through it. ยฅ^ However, crystal-proximate soil is hard to come by. Should I do another experiment using just water on the two soil types?

I've used just about every seed there is on this island. But my results were not as anticipated. There's no reason to panic yet... ยฅ^ But recently, I found a new seed in that eerie part of the forest. It is unusually large for a seed of this island. I will experiment with it.

I don't believe it. That seed I found deep in the forest. It... ยฅ^ I thought it was growing well. I thought I'd found a seed that could grow on this land. However... If my hypothesis is correct... It is too soon to make conclusions. But it is dangerous, of that I am sure. As for what to do with it... I've given up on using it as food. It is not something that people should eat. I think, no I'm sure, it would lead to something that cannot be undone...

That was a lot...

Mariel

It mentioned a seed from somewhere eerie, deep in the forest...

Do you think that's the thing we're growing right now? That huge thing?

Nona

B-But if it is...then this is bad! We may not know the whole story, but from what we've just read, it sounds like it's dangerous to eat! But that means...

Mariel

We've gotta tell Aldo! He might try to harvest it while we're away!

Let's go back to the clock tower and...

Nnh!

Nona

Mariel?

Mariel

The bells...

Nona

The bells? I don't hear anything?

Mariel

Let's...

Let's make dinner. They'll... They'll be back soon...

Who sang the song? The child born from cotton. That wonderful, snow-white child. Who does the bird kiss? The boy with the golden eyes. The girl with the smooth hands. Run, run, run in the forest. Silver fangs, stay away...

???

(My eyes aren't so good. They never have been.) (Like the whole world is covered in a veil of mist, and something strangely cold... No...) (A zealous, absorbed gaze is watching over me, always. Its cold, cold eyes fixed on me...)

Impure child of sin! Your ashen eyes are a punishment from God. That is why your eyes cannot see this beautiful island.

???

No, I...

Rejoice, child of sin! God has given you a trial. Fill your blood with the tears of God. Drink! Drink, you sinful child. And maybe you will be forgiven!

???

Stop it! No! That's not the tears of God! That's just poison! You keep feeding me food so poisonous even you can't eat it...

Shut up! Stop talking!

???

*cough cough*

...... ......

Our Saint!

I knew you would awaken! As God's messenger, as a saint!

You are our hope! So beautiful...

Marie, you must raise our children! Only you can raise them into pure, sinless children of God!

Marie

Really? You really think I'm a saint? And you want me to look after your children?

Yes...

Very well. I will take those ten children, and raise them as children of the Saint. I can raise them however I like? Good. I'll make them happy. Not like you. I'll make a paradise for them. One where they can just breathe, laugh, feel the dappled sun, join hands... I will look after these pure, sinless children forever, here on God's Island.

...So that even should they perish, they will never know God.

(I will not fail. I will never do as they did.) (I just want to be happy. And I will take my reward.) (The pure children will stay pure. They will never become adults. They will only ever love me.) (That is all I ask. And then, I will make everybody happy forever.) (Come what may. By any means necessary.)

...Yes, before the dinner bell rings. Where am I going? My arm is hurt, so not far. Mind the wind, now, okay?

???

(Liar. I will never be like you.) (I will prove to you...how foolish it is to change...) (And how happy it is to stay the same.)

Nona

Mariel! Mariel, wake up!

Mariel

Ugh...

Nona

Mariel! Thank goodness! You collapsed! I was so worried!

Mariel

Mariel? No... I'm...Marie.

Nona

Huh?

Mariel

I... I...

Nona

Mariel, calm down. You're crying! Why are you crying? Did something happen while you were collapsed?

Mariel

Huh? Oh...

I saw... I saw... Marie's memories...

Nona

What?

Mariel

I was Marie...and she was... she was so...

(I think this has happened before...)

I think... I saw something so very sad. It was horrible. But I can't remember what it was. I... I don't think I'm myself...

(Oh, right...)

I saw...Marie's memories again... I was Marie...and she was... she was so...

Nona

......

Mariel

I...

Marie

I'm scared. Every day, I'm scared. Of hunger, of losing the children, of my own pain.

But the sun shines here. That alone made me happy.

Mariel

He's feeding them his own flesh! And you're giving him your tacit consent! Your love for the children just feeds your own ego! You're using them! I cannot forgive any of this!

You've shown your true colors!

Marie

Have you ever starved? Have you ever been forced into an environment from which you have no escape?

I can't escape, so I made my own happiness here. I loved the children who were forced upon me. They're all doing well, aren't they? They're not even remotely sad. So what am I doing wrong?

Mariel

Absolutely everything! I can't say it enough! You can't call that true love!

How could I say that?

I don't think what I said was wrong. I said how I truly felt at the time. But... But I rebuked her, I ignored how she was feeling inside... I need to apologize to her! I feel so ashamed! All those things I said... I was so cruel to her...

Nona

Mariel...

Mariel

But... But... What should I do? I wanna apologize, I wanna help her! I wanna hold out my hand to her again! But it's this exact feeling that came across as so arrogant to her. And I... I... I still can't condone everything she's done! How could I? So what do I do?

Nona

......

Mariel

But... This feeling. This desire to save her and the children. It is so very real.

Nona

I know.

I don't know everything that you and Marie talked about. But everything you said was true, just as it is now. And I'm sure you only said it out of genuine concern. So if... If you clashed with Marie because you didn't know the full story... Well, that doesn't make you a bad person. No one knew. No one realized. You've been working so hard to save everyone. Would a bad person do that? And we're all in the same boat here. You can't blame yourself for everything.

Mariel

But...that means... Going in there with the best of intentions, yet hurting someone, can still end up being for the best. The desire to help someone is always a good, just thing. I had thought that was the way to save people, with a pure heart. But now...

If wanting to save someone is just arrogance, then what is the point of this feeling? What if my outstretched hand only brings pain? What if my pure feelings turn to violence? The teachings of the temple... Everything I believed...

Nona

Mariel...

???

Aaahhh!

Nona

Did you hear that?

Mariel

It sounded like a child's scream!

Nona

Let's go, Mariel!

Marie

Aldo, tell me a story.

Aldo

You want me...to tell you a story?

Marie

Yes. You promised me a tale of your adventures, remember? Is the outside world very, very large?

Ordinary people laughing happily, singing affectionate songs, holding hands with the people they love... Walking through the streets in the lamplight, wearing soft shoes... Does such a world really exist?

Aldo

Marie?

Marie

Tell me all about it.

Aldo

Um, right...

I've been traveling with my friends, you see. But um...where to start...

And when I turned around, it was my grandpa of all people behind me! I really thought my heart might stop!

Marie

Teehee...

Aldo

I guess you prefer these everyday stories to ones about grand adventures.

Marie

You think so?

*sigh* I want to enjoy unbelievably wonderful stories about the big, wide world. But it's as if what I really want is something else entirely.

Aldo

What do you mean?

Marie

This story.

It's lovely.

Aldo

......

Marie... We're trying our best, you know.

Marie

You are? With what?

Aldo

With getting you some food. Oh, and also, we want to repair your boat. Make something more durable. We'll make sure you can eat, then we can introduce you to the outside world. Results may not be immediate, but we'll do whatever we can for you all.

So...

Marie

So?

Aldo

So, umm...

Trust in us, and don't give up. That's what I wanted to say. We really do want to help you.

Marie

......

How strange.

Aldo

What?

Marie

It sounds to me like resignation comes all too easily for you. You are so like him. I'm sure you'd throw away your own values for the sake of others, and only ever look forward. You only ever see what's right in front of you, as if it's the only thing that matters.

Aldo

Wh-What are you talking about?

Marie

Well now. Perhaps the reason why they're so uncontrollable is because they overlap with myself?

Well?

Aldo

Hm?

Marie

Okay, I hope you don't mind, but there's something I need to get off my chest. Sometimes, I wonder if I'm doing something foolish. If I'll end up the same as them. But...

Do you think that we will all be rewarded for staying pure, for doing the right thing?

Aldo

Um... Well...

Marie

I don't. It's all heaven's will. That's why I have to make my own happiness. "If you do the right thing, salvation will come." Well, the history of this island proves otherwise.

Aldo

What do you mean by that?

Marie

I don't want to be an islander. Still, I don't want to lose this. I'm driven by an uncontrollable fear. I'm terrified of you.

Aldo

Of us?

Marie

Yes. So very scared. No matter what your circumstances are... Anyone who turns up at your house, and tries to meddle with your family, your life, is going to provoke fear. That look in your eyes, that genuine belief that you outsiders can change this situation... The way you decided, from the moment we met, that we were weak and in need of protection... If not terrifying, then what is it?

You look lost. Of course you do. But if thinking isn't your strong suit, it's best if you don't start trying now.

Between thinkers and non-thinkers, the non-thinkers' flesh is always more tender.

Aldo

Huh?!

Wait, Marie! You...

Was that a monster? And the children's screams? I think it's coming from the field!

Marie, whatever this is, save it for later! We have to help the children!

Marie

Stupid man. There is no "later."

That cry... Is it done already? I knew it... I am no match for a real one.

58. Scene 58

Nona

Aldo! We've gotta hurry!

Aldo

Did you hear that scream, too?

Mariel

Yes! We think it was coming from around here somewhere!

Nona

There it was again!

Aldo

It's coming from the field! Hurry!

Mariel

Children!

Liam

Help us!

Monica

Aaahhh!

Aldo

The monster's gone berserk! Why would it have lost control like that?

Nona

I don't know, but we've gotta get in there and help! Mariel, the children!

Mariel

I'm on it!

Aldo

There, that should do it!

Mariel! Children! Are you okay?

Mariel

Yes, we're all fine.

Tia

Aldo! Nona!

Nona

I'm so glad you're not hurt! But what are you doing out here? I thought you were napping in the clock tower?

And Aldo, weren't you and Marie having tea in the clock tower?

Aldo

Yeah, we were... That's strange? I could have sworn the children were all sleeping on the second floor. When did you go outside?

Verdi

Huh? When? I dunno...

Andre

We were just sleepin'...and then...

Serena

Huh? Uhh...

Tia

Ugh... My hands and tootsies... They huuurt...

Mariel

They do? Let me see!

Oh yeah, there are scratches all over you! And your clothes are all dirty...

Nona

Umm... What's going on?

Oh, what now?!

Mariel

Eh?! That's what was making all that noise?!

Aldo

Our crop?! But how could a plant be crying out?!

Mariel

Ah!

Aldo! That thing is dangerous!

Aldo

Dangerous? What do you mean?

Mariel

I don't know the details! I just know you must not eat it!

Nona

We read in a journal that it shouldn't be eaten. But...

I think I'd jump to the same conclusion anyway! There's definitely something not right about it! It looks like it's alive!

Aldo

Wha?!

Nona

Ugh!

Mariel

It's moving! I think it's hostile!

Aldo

Then we've got to fight back before anyone gets hurt!

Nona

I won't let you hurt the children!

Okay, Mariel! Go take the children to the clock tower!

Nona

Uh oh! It's still going strong!

Mariel

No! Children, wait!

Aldo

What are you doing?! Get back, it's not safe for you!

Elias

There you are!

Nona

Huh?

Nat

We finally found you! We finally found you!

Serena

We heard you calling us!

Aldo

Erm... What's going on here?

Mariel

Get away from that thing! It's dangerous!

Nona

It looks like it's going to strike again! We'll stop it, but you've got to get out of here!

Elias

Stop it! Don't bully it!

Amalie

Why would you do that?

Mariel

Ch-Children?

Enoch

Huh? What's that? 'Kay...'kay...

Nona

Um... What?

Aldo

Is it...talking?

Verdi

You can't grow up all by yourself?

Andre

That's okay! Us neither.

Liam

Come on, let's hold hands!

Mariel

Wait! What are you...

Marie

What are you saying, children?!

Get away from that! You must never approach that failure of a thing. Now come home. You all must be half-asleep. Now stop this nonsense and...

Kids

Huh?

Enoch

Who're you?

Marie

Wha?

Enoch

Yep, yep. Sorry, we're listening. Let's all huddle together. Then we can be happy. We know...

Marie

What...the...

Nona

You're kidding! What just...

Marie

Wait!

Mariel

A-After them!

Aldo

Right!

Mariel

Wait!

Marie

What are you doing?! Stop this at once! Come over here, where it's safe! What if you fell?

How can you not know?

We've been together all this time! I gave you so much love! How can you not recognize me? I...

I know who you are! Even in your new forms, I can tell who's who!

WAIT!

STOP, NO!

Nona

Marie, don't!

Mariel

You'll fall!

Aldo

Marie!

Marie

I don't... I don't understand! Enoch! Nat! Elias! Amalie! Verdi! Tia! Monica! Serena! Liam! Andre! Come back! Come baaack!

???

So they survived...

Marie

Ivan?

Ivan

Marie...

You're not safe there. Come here.

Marie

Huh?

Ivan

Thank you.

Aldo

Thank...you?

Ivan

That seed you found and cultivated was what kept the children alive. In the hundreds of times I tried, I was never able to achieve this outcome. So thank you.

Mariel

What are you talking about? Didn't you see what happened to the children? I'm not even sure if you can call them children anymore!

There is nothing good about this!

Ivan

Is that so? I disagree. Didn't you see their faces? Yes, their forms have changed, but their eyes still sparkled with joy. They have a new life now. Unlike their intended history, they have wills, a future, and hope. They may look different, but so what? All that matters is, they survived, keeping their dignity and free will.

Aldo

How can you say that? How can you say they still have their dignity? We cannot accept this! We still can't even understand it! And Marie...

Marie

......

Aldo

Marie...

Nona

This is too much! All we wanted was to put food in their bellies and smiles on their faces... We wanted to help them.

But maybe it would have been better if we'd done nothing at all.

Ivan

......

They've swum quite far already. Let us pray they find their paradise across the sea.

Mariel

How can you say that? ......

Well...we should probably go back to the clock tower. Staying here won't do Marie's health any good.

Aldo

Okay.

60. Scene 60

Marie

Tia can't sleep unless she snuggles the doll I made her. Verdi's always acting the big sister to everyone... When really, she longs to be spoiled more than any of the others...

Mariel

Marie

I wish they would come back... The sea must be so very cold.

Aldo

......

Ivan

Marie...

Marie

......

Ivan... You won't disappear, will you? You won't try to die anymore? Tell me you'll stay by my side.

Ivan

......

Aldo

What was that noise?

Nona

Let's go, Aldo! It could be...

Ivan

Go. I will stay with Marie.

Mariel

Okay.

???

Who'd have thought there'd be an island here! It's not on any maps! We must be the first to discover it!

Aldo

People!

Nona

Um...

Excuse me! Did you come here by boat?

Man

Hm? Why, yes!

Are you islanders? We found traces of civilization, but we never thought people would actually be living here! And by some stroke of good luck, we even speak the same language! Please, talk to us! Let us learn from you!

Mariel

Hold on, we're not...

Man

Oh, where are my manners? I haven't even explained what we're doing here!

Merchant

We're traders from the central continent. We were sailing west from the continent on our usual trade route, when we found ourselves lost at sea. Our compass was broken. I thought we'd wind up adrift at sea...

But then we saw a beautiful, golden light between the waves! We followed it, and it brought us here.

It must sound unbelievable, but it was the strangest experience. The light seemed out of this world... The entire crew was convinced that this light was guiding us. That we had to sail the ship in the direction "they" showed us.

And then we found ourselves on this island, this Golden Land. This couldn't be the garden of heaven, could it?

Nona

Huh? Oh, um... No, it's a real...

Merchant

Haha, I guess we're still a little excited! Well, if we're still in the real world, that is good news indeed!

You folks seem rather bewildered yourselves. Perhaps it's best we left to explore the forest a little. When we come back, we'd love to talk to you, people of this Golden Land.

Aldo

What's going on? Why would a ship turn up out of the blue?

Nona

They said a beautiful light brought them here... If a ship from the outside has come here... Then maybe their days of being stuck on this island are over.

Aldo

Right...

Nona

But no matter how many ships come... And even if this way of life is finally over... The children are gone, and they're not coming back...

Aldo

......

Mariel

I think...

Perhaps the children beckoned the ship.

The light shining through the waves could have been the children... Maybe they guided the ship to free Marie and Ivan of this island.

Nona

Mariel...

Mariel

Before the children left, they thanked Marie.

Perhaps this was their final gift to you.

At least, that's what I'd like to think.

Ivan

......

If that is the case, then Marie should be the only one to receive this gift.

Mariel

......

Aldo

Why have you come? Is Marie okay? I don't think we should be leaving her on her own.

Ivan

Don't worry. I put her to sleep. It's safer that way, for her. And, well...

I remembered, I have something for you.

Nona

For me?

Ivan

Little bird. Do you mind if I call you that? My instincts are whispering to me to give you this. It will aid you in your quest for your memory.

Research Staff

How could this be happening?

Chief...!

Chief

What's going on here?! What happened? Where is the project... Where's our precious child?

Research Staff

...We failed to pick up on a runaway internal energy cascade. By the time the alert sounded, it was already... ...Automatic deployment of the freezing system was necessary. Cell integrity failed, resulting in exothermic reaction.

Chief

An explosion... And the child was lost.

Research Staff

......

Chief

I'm glad your equipment protected you. I also see no issues with the overall life reaction process. Transport her to the medical pod. Once her eyes open, her first task will be to clean up this mess.

Research Staff

Chief...

Chief

We haven't lost anything yet. We've just returned to square one.

Don't lose heart. Keep thinking, keep testing, keep praying. Until the day that our savior, our miracle child, is born...

Nona

What was that?

(I don't understand... Why did I see that scene?) (And it's making me so sad. Like there's a gaping hole in my heart...)

Mariel

Ivan?!

Ivan

I don't have much time left. This time... It looks like the end will come. Time will not repeat itself again. Neither will my much-repeated life.

I must go. I'm sorry that you were forced into this situation due to my own lack of power. But I am truly grateful. You saved them.

Nona

Don't say that...

Ivan

A cat?

Aldo

It's that cat!

Mariel

Are you saying... That it's really over? And we should go back to our own time layer, our own time?

But I don't want to go! Surely we can resist?

Ivan

Even so, there's nothing more you can do.

Mariel

......

But I... I'm not read...

Nona

Mariel!

Ivan

Your turn.

Aldo

Is there really nothing we can do? Can't we look for the children? Or stay behind with Marie...

Or something...?

Ivan

Marie will soon leave this island on that ship. They will rescue her. Anyone brought back from the Golden Land, from God's Island, will surely be treated with respect. So don't worry. Go home. Besides. Though I know this is selfish of me... I would like to be alone with Marie at the end. Will you allow me this?

Nona

Okay. I don't understand, but I do. I don't want to allow it, but I will. If that's what you want.

Aldo

Nona...

Nona

I'm sorry we can't do anything. I'm sorry we don't understand. Thank you for sharing your food. I really liked you. It was only for a short while, and I'm sure you haven't appreciated my carelessness...

But, you know...

I will never forget the times we talked together. I can't tell the children now, so maybe you could tell Marie... Perhaps it's cruel of me to impose this wish on you, but...

Ivan

I'll tell her.

Nona

Thank you. Let's go, Aldo.

Aldo

Right.

Nona

Hey, Aldo...

Aldo

Yes?

Nona

I'm sad.

Aldo

Yes?

Nona

I'm disappointed.

Aldo

Me too.

Nona

I wonder... What should we have done?

Aldo

...... ......

Marie

Hm...

I...van?

Ivan

Good morning, Marie.

Marie

Oh...

Such a strange feeling. It's almost as if it was all a dream. I had ten children, and you and I were raising them together. But you...

Partway through, you...

Ivan

...... Marie.

Marie

Yes, Ivan? It's such a nice day today. I can hear the birds singing.

Oh? You're so pale. Why have you gone so see-through?

Ivan

Marie. I do so hate to leave you behind. But I am so happy that you are alive. Now, I have no regrets. I don't care if I die. I can finally release you.

Marie

Ivan? What are you talking about?

Ivan?! No, wait! Why...

Ivan

Marie. You are strong. So be strong... And forget about me. Live your life. Think about your own happiness this time. Okay? And be brave. That's all you lack. I'm already disappearing. So I pray for you to keep your courage. I will be your sword. And then, no matter what difficulty or ugliness comes your way... You can slash through it. I pray that you will be happy now. That nothing bad will ever threaten you again.

Marie

Wait! What are you...

Ivan

You gave so much to the children, and never had anything for yourself. But, Marie... This sword is yours, and yours alone. Never forget that.

Marie

Ivan?

Nooo! Why? Why? WHYYY?!

I don't want this! What I wanted...

What I always wanted... It wasn't this!

61. Scene 61

Marie

What a lovely day it is today! The perfect weather for a nap. Everyone else is already fast asleep. I made some tea out of the flowers here. It's such a fragrant and calming blend.

Mariel

......

Marie

Wait right there. I'll bring it out...

Mariel

Um, Marie...

......

There's something I wanted to ask...

Actually, um... Before that... I should apologize...

Marie

For what?

Mariel

I'm sorry. We... We went up to the top floor.

Marie

......

Mariel

You know about him, don't you?

He's... He's...

Marie

He's always been that way.

Mariel

Huh?

Marie

I know what you talked about. I can tell by how you reacted. He truly believes that it is for our own good. He won't listen to anything else on the matter.

I wonder what he tastes like. I haven't tried it yet, but the children love it. His physical form is so faint to touch, yet as food, he has such a defined texture. Odd, isn't it?

Mariel

Marie? You...knew? You knew he's been feeding his own flesh to the children? And did you know that his body is like poison to them?

Marie

How could I not know? You only arrived today, and yet you already know yourselves. They're showing no abnormalities yet, but the build up of toxins will turn the children insane before long. What happens when the madness sets in, I do not know. He has always refused to tell me that much.

I tell him to stop. I keep telling him. I tell him it won't make me happy.

You see...

There is only one of him. I cannot bear him being reduced to food for my children.

Mariel

Huh?

Marie

I love the children, of course. They are so innocent and lovely. And they love me unconditionally. So I don't want to lose them. I have finally found paradise in this place.

Beautiful, dappled sunshine, a little clock tower, no scary voices...cute children, and absolute rest... I want to protect that, no matter what. So before I met him... I sacrificed my own body to feed the children.

Mariel

You...what...

Marie

Don't look so pale, Mariel! I didn't feed them my flesh.

I can use the power of purification. Did you know that? I can remove toxins, but only in small quantities. Like bits of food. And I can heal wounds.

But come here. Look.

Mariel

What...is this?

Marie

My powers come at a price. Each time I use my purification power, these ugly bruises appear on my skin. They're spreading further, and it's scaring me. My body's getting weaker, but the children haven't noticed yet.

Mariel

Oh...

Marie

Tut-tut. You shouldn't cast magic on someone without their permission... I won't heal anyway. Even the power of a real saint can't heal these wounds. Teehee. It's almost like I've been branded.

I'm so jealous. You get to use your powers over and over, and keep your looks, too.

He told me to stop using this power. That he'd make it so that I could stop. But I didn't think he'd start carving away his own flesh like that. I never asked for that! I'm scared. Every day, I'm scared. Of hunger, of losing the children, of my own pain.

But the sun shines here. That alone made me happy. Why fear death when I'm at peace, when he and the children are here, when I'm in a paradise of pure love? However...

He's killing himself! And on top of all that, you ignorant outsiders decided to intrude on our life!

I want you to go home, but you're still here! I feel like I'm going mad! Don't destroy my paradise. And don't mislead the children, either.

Mariel

What are you...

What are you talking about? I don't understand you! I don't even think you love your children! From what you've said, all you care about is yourself!

Marie

Yes, you're quite right. I like them because they love me. That's all there is to it.

Mariel

What?

So you're not worried about the children, just yourself? Is everyone else secondary to you?

The children are the ones suffering the most! And yet, what are you and Ivan doing? He's feeding them his own flesh! And you're giving him your tacit consent! You love the children to feed your own ego! You use them! I cannot forgive any of this!

You've shown your true colors!

Marie

I do love them, truly. If I didn't, I'd abandon them. The effort is more than the reward. Raising children is so very hard.

So tell me, Mariel. If you were me, how would you keep the children fed? How would you keep them alive?

Mariel

I... I... I'd make a field, like we are doing, and gather things from across the island!

Marie

And how long until your field yields results? And how much would one harvest provide? How am I supposed to go back and forth through a monster- filled forest... All while looking after ten small children? How does the reward compare to the risks?

When I alone need to feed ten others. Every single day. On an empty belly from sharing my own food.

Mariel

But...

I can't say this enough! You can't call that true love! The children genuinely love you. But you...

Marie

What is the point in questioning my love for them? No matter what I feel in my heart... I'm making them happy. I treat them with compassion. I keep them away from all things bad. I have kept them fed, even at the cost of my own body. How does any of that differ from regular parents?

I've done everything I can. The children were kept protected, they were even fed from him and me. They are happy, with no doubts or worries at all. What else matters? I can't stop him now, so I'm letting the children live with the slow- acting poison...

But in this paradise, the only one who finds it unbearable is me. Everyone else can be happy. You have no reason to be so critical of me.

Mariel

But...

No, you're wrong! It's not right to feel that way! Because it doesn't come from guilt toward the children, it comes from you prioritizing the life of another!

Marie

How can you speak to me of right and wrong? Multiple important, but replaceable, lives can never be as valuable as one important, but irreplaceable, life.

Mariel

How... How could you even think such a terrible thing? Listen to me, Marie! Even if you're about to starve...or maybe even because of it! You should cherish those important to you! It's times like this when you've got to cling to what you hold dear!

Marie

But feelings don't fill your belly.

They don't fill my heart, either. Your words won't help me. They won't even make a difference. But I heard what you said, loud and clear. And yet, my answer remains the same.

Mariel

Tsk...

Please. Think of the children. All those faces...who love you... who believe in you. And...

Marie

Don't try to manipulate me, Mariel.

Don't use others to persuade me when your own arguments have failed. But you know...you have reminded me of something.

I do so hate to see their sad, little faces when they're hungry. It makes me sad just thinking about it. Oh, I was so miserable back then...

Mariel

Huh?

Marie

And that's why...

Mariel

What is that?

Ugh?

Marie

Oh good, it worked. How do you like my poison candle? The sweet aroma sends you to sleep. Now, it has no effect on me...

But, never mind that. Back to what I was saying... I think I could prolong the children's lives using your holy body. Your flesh is higher quality. And what's more... You're a sainted priestess. I'm sure we can expect far greater things from your body than any regular person's.

Mariel

Marie!

Marie

Well, I'm only really half-expecting anything to come of it. People used to say that, long ago... So I thought it would be worth a try. And if not... At least I'll have gotten rid of one nuisance, fed the children, and kept him alive a little longer.

Mariel

Wait, Marie...

Marie

Goodnight, sweet girl. You're feeling so very sleepy, aren't you? Let me wipe away those tears. Now, sleep tight, and dream of happy things. May your dreams be warm as the protective embrace of a mother bird, encircling you with her wings.

???

A saint's flesh has the power to keep people alive? No, that's absurd. Such a thing has never been proven, anywhere in this big, wide world. So are you going to use that power instead? ......

Give me your hand. That's right. Let me feel you. So this is how human skin feels. The shape of your fingers, the contours of your hand. I understand, Marie. Leave this to me. That power is at its limit. You cannot use it for anyone but yourself. Promise me.

62. Scene 62

Mariel

...... ......

???

Why did things turn out this way?

Why was I alone born like this? Everyone is so very strange. I don't need to see to know that. Everyone is carried away by something. Idiots, the lot of them. Like idiots, they have been carried away. Like idiots, they consume me.

Seeing, yet pretending not to. Blinded by it, driven crazy by it. This must be happiness.

You should live here. I will not harm you.

???

You could not go blind.

I promise you, I will save you and the children.

???

From the very beginning, your eyes were colored with blinding silver scales. So...what about me?

What do I do? How do I ensure my life is not threatened? How do I stop them from taking it from me?

What should I do? I just want to stay here, basking in the dappled sunlight. Can I?

Mariel

Ugh...

???

Good, you're awake.

Mariel

Ivan? Why are you so see-through?

Ah! Where's Marie?

Ivan

She tied you up with a rope, then left the clock tower. I'm sorry for not noticing sooner. You were wandering in a deep sleep of unknown cause. I didn't know how to bring you out of it. I'm just glad I was able to use my power to help you.

Mariel

What? Is that why you're so transparent? Did you use the last of your power on me?

Ivan

Please, don't feel you need to apologize. There's nothing to apologize for. Now, are you okay? I was able to neutralize the poison, but I sensed a mysterious stream of consciousness. I fear for your health.

Also, the whole time...

Mariel

Huh?

W-Wait? Why am I crying? My chest...it hurts...

Ivan

......

Mariel

I think... I saw something so very sad. It was horrible. But I can't remember what it was. I... I don't think I'm myself...

Ivan

You and Marie have a similar aura.

Mariel

Huh?

Ivan

This is only my impression, but... When you lost consciousness, you resonated with her power. Why, I do not know. Perhaps you saw something in her memory. While you were collapsed...you had more of an air of her to you than that of yourself.

Mariel

I saw...Marie's memories...?

Ivan?!

Ivan

I am sorry...but my time is almost up.

Mariel

No, wait!

Ivan

I have but one favor to ask. Please... Stop her. Stop Marie.

Mariel

Stop...her?

Ivan

I should go. But...I cannot chase her any longer. I fear she's set on a dangerous path. She was willing to hurt you without hesitation. I don't even know what she's intending to do while she's away...

Mariel

But...

Ivan

I am sorry for all this trouble. But...please. Promise me. Perhaps you three, external factors in this, are why they are all still alive so far. For the first time, they've a chance at survival, at happiness, without any strange changes occurring. So please...when I'm gone...

Give them a happy future...

Mariel

No... He's gone? He's really gone?

Oh... I understand. At the very least...

I will protect the children. I will make up for your failings!

???

(I've never felt the warmth of sunlight before...) (When I'm with you, I can feel the warmth, even though I have no sense of temperature.) (That alone is more than enough reason for me to want to protect you.)

63. Scene 63

Mariel

They're not here! Where are they? First Marie vanished, now Aldo and Nona! I was sure they'd be by the field...

(I've gotta find them, quick...)

I'm not gonna let it end this way!

Nona

Phew! It's really not so easy to find anything useful, is it?

Aldo

If you're tired, why don't we go back and rest? We have done a lot of walking today.

Nona

No, I'm good! I could keep going for ages! So let's go! I wanna find something amazing, something that will really impress Mariel!

Aldo

Haha. Okay then.

Tia

Aldooo!

Liam

Nonaaa!

Aldo

Children? What are you doing out here?

Nona

Wait, how many are there?

Phew. They're all there.

But why are you all out in the middle of the forest? It's dangerous out here!

Tia

When we woke up from our nap, Mama wasn't in the house...

Enoch

We know it's dangerous outside... but we were all worried. So we had to be brave an' come look for you.

Nona

I see. Well I'm glad you're all okay. Sorry for not being there for you. Now, you were all really brave coming here... But make sure you don't do it again. It's really not safe for kids out here.

Enoch

We won't...

Aldo

So Marie wasn't there? Where could she be? I thought she and Mariel were having tea in the clock tower?

Amalie

Mariel wasn't there either.

Nona

So they both disappeared?

Elias

Uh oh! We've gotta look for 'em!

Aldo

Calm down, everyone! We're going to find them. But we need to get you back to the clock tower first.

Come with us. Let's get you to a safe place...

???

What's all this?

Marie

Why aren't you in the clock tower?

Tia

Mama!

Liam

Yay! Mama's here! We were worried about you, Mama! So we came to tell Nona an' Aldo!

Nona

Yes, they were all so worried about you, Marie. I'm so glad we found you. But where have you...

Marie

Come along, children.

Tia

Huh?

Marie

It breaks my heart to say this... But those are bad people. They've come to destroy our happiness. Get away from them, now. Come to Mama.

Monica

M-Mama?

Nona

Marie?

Aldo

What happened? Why are you acting like this?

Marie

Quickly now. Didn't you hear me, children?

Tia

Um...

Enoch

M-Mama? Are Aldo an' Nona actually bad people?

Nat

But Mama! They've been real nice to us! They've been playin' with us loads and loads!

Marie

Enoch. Nat. Don't you trust me? Do you trust these strangers, these bad people, over your own Mama?

Nat

N-No! 'Course we don...

Marie

You're breaking your poor Mama's heart, my darlings. And look. They have such nasty things with them.

That's called a sword, and it's used to hurt people. The gentlest brush against it will make you bleed. If it strikes you with full force, it can cut you up into pieces, and you'll never, ever recover. How could anyone with such a thing be a good person?

And Nona, she carries a bow. That's used to kill people.

Nat

What?!

Serena

A-Aldo? Nona?

Aldo

No, it's not like that! I don't use Ogre Rancorem to hurt people!

And neither does Nona with her bow! Swords and bows may be dangerous on their own... But if you use them correctly, they can be a force for good! They can protect people! That's why Nona and I carry weapons!

Nona

Yeah! We have them so that we can protect you all!

Amalie

Wh-What're they talking about? I don't get it...

Elias

I think they said they're not dangerous? So they're not bad guys after all?

Enoch

So you're saying Mama's wrong?

Elias

Nuh-uh! Mama's always right!

Marie

HURRY!

Quickly now. I thought my children were good. I thought they listened to their Mama. But if you won't come, then good riddance. Go live with your new friends if you don't love me anymore.

Monica

I-I don't wanna!

Marie

There we go. I knew you were good, my cute little darlings. Now, get behind me. And keep close. It's not safe out here.

Now then...

Aldo

Marie...

Nona

Marie, wait! What happened? Did we do something? I'm sorry, but I really don't understand...

Marie

Don't apologize! That will only make me angry.

Oh, you irritate me so much. Swooping in from the outside, hanging around here, acting all nice. I'm only saying what I've thought hundreds of times already. Being all smiles in front of the children. You mean well, do you? Urgh, you and Mariel, with your beautiful faces...

You're doing it right now. Looking all sad and pathetic, like you're the injured party.

Nona

That's... That's how you saw us? I thought we were getting along...

Aldo

Wait, where is Mariel?

Marie

Oh, she's in the storehouse. No. Teehee. She's in the pantry. Don't worry, you'll be reunited before long.

Nona

Is that a knife?!

Aldo

Marie, what are you...

Marie

We don't have enough food. But you already know all that, don't you? And about Ivan, about us. You said you'd make a field, but I don't expect anything of it. And besides...

When they're that hungry, nutritious meat is far better for the children than a bunch of leaves.

Nona

Wait. You're not suggesting... You're gonna...eat us?!

Marie

Well aren't you a clever girl? Now, I'll let you take care of this yourselves. You can use those weapons of yours. If you can't, then I will. But I'll be nice, and let you choose when.

Aldo

We can't do that! No way are we gonna die! And how could you make the children eat something like that?!

Marie

Urgh! Stop being so naive! I can't take any more of this! Fine. If you won't do it, I will. Now hold still...

Huh?

Enoch

Gimme... Gimme back my Mama!

Marie

What are you...

Nona

Marie!

Enoch

Our Mama would never look so scary!

Andre

Some baddie's taken over Mama! She's even got a sword!! We'll save you, Mama!

Marie

*Huff* Gah! Haha... Ahahahaha! En...och...why? And...Andre... I am...your Mama... Why would you...say that? Why would you... I...I didn't raise you...to...

Aldo

Enoch! Get away from her! Put that down!

Enoch

No! You're not our Mama! Our Mama's all kind! Not like you!

Kids

She can't trick us!

Nona

Enoch! No!

Marie

So that's...how it is... In the end...even you...

Nona

NOOO! Marie!

Mariel

Marie? What is this... Why would you...?

Aldo

Huh?

Looks like we've gone back in time again.

Nona

How could that happen? Marie... They...

Mariel

Tell me! What happened? Why did Marie...

Aldo

I guess we've got a lot to talk about.

Mariel

No way... She was stabbed by one of the children?

What a terrible way to die! It's so tragic!

Aldo

It really is.

Nona

And I never realized Marie saw us like that...

Aldo

Mariel, did you talk to Ivan?

Mariel

Yes. Just before he disappeared... He spoke to me. He asked me to stop Marie. And to make sure Marie and the children had a happy future.

Aldo

No matter what, we have to end this time loop!

Nona

But it's not that simple, is it? This time, the time loop was caused by Marie's death... But I can't accept that their correct history is one where the children become mindless monsters.

Aldo

Nona...

You're right. That is the one thing that we have in common with Ivan. So this time, let's find a way to escape the time loop and ensure that history doesn't happen again!

???

What are you looking for?

Nona

M-Marie!

Marie

I made some nice, calming tea for everyone...but when I came back, you were all gone.

I was worried, so came out to look for you.

Mariel

......

Marie

Why, you all look so pale! Is something wrong?

Aldo

No, it's nothing.

Marie

Oh?

You know, Mariel, it's almost nap time for the children...

Marie

So why don't you come back with me to the clock tower? It would give me someone to talk to. I brewed all this tea, but it seems Aldo and Nona won't be there to drink it. I'll be so lonely all on my own.

Nona

Aldo, if we've come back at this precise point...

Aldo

Then this could be the branch point in time! Which would mean...

Marie

So come with me? Unless you don't want to?

Mariel

Well...

Nona

Um... How about if Aldo went with you instead? Right, Aldo?

Aldo

Oh, um, sure! I can do that! I can tell you tales from my travels. They should keep you entertained.

Marie

......

Teehee. That would make me so happy! I've never been able to talk to kids my own age.

Oh, I'm absolutely spoiled for choice! I don't know how to choose between you! Mariel, Aldo, can I leave the decision to you? I'll be waiting right here.

Aldo

Okay. Wait right there while we decide who should go.

Marie

Let me know once you've decided.

64. Scene 64

74 lines

You can't proceed without Nona.

Nona

......

Aldo

If we jump through this pillar, then...

Nona

Oh...

Oh?

Aldo

What is it, Nona?

Nona

Aldo, look! There's a rift!

Aldo

Is that...a distortion in spacetime like we saw before? Don't these appear when the White Night Time Layer tries to preserve its history?

Nona

So there could be another possible history we don't know about through here?

Aldo! Is Ogre Rancorem awake?

Aldo

Maybe... So we just need to sever this rift, right?

Nona

Look! Something's not right here.

Aldo

You're right. It looks a little like a wormhole...

Nona

Suspicious. I think there's something through here! I can smell it!

Hey, Aldo! Why don't you try to sever it using Ogre Rancorem?

Aldo

Huh? Don't you know how dangerous that is?

Nona

PLEEEAAASE? I want to know if something's there! All you've gotta do is give it a teeny, tiny cut with the tip of your sword there!

Aldo

Fine. But stay back. It's not safe.

Whoa?!

Nona

A-Are you okay? What was with those sparks?

Aldo

I'm fine. But maybe don't touch it.

Nona

Oh, right. Sorry!

Hm?

W-Was that...Nat and Liam?!

Aldo

Look!

Nona

Marie?! And all the children?

They vanished...

Aldo, do you think what we just saw...

Aldo

Yes, if it works the same as before, then there could be a future in which Marie and the children stay together. A future where one has to die, and no one has to part.

Nona

......

Then there's only one thing to do!

Aldo

Nona...

Nona

I don't really know what we can do yet, but...

But...I really don't want to accept that ending!

Aldo

No, I feel the same! If there's still something we can do, then we should do it! Okay, let's go back to Arat.

If it works like last time, we can use an energy fragment from the monster to widen the rift.

The vortex has enough power to affect the world around it. So if we look around Arat, we might be able to find something.

Nona

Right. If there's even the slightest chance that we can change their fate, we have to find it.

Aldo

What was that?

Nona

Marie and the children were right there!

Aldo

It was too clear to be an illusion. It really looked like they existed in this world. Oh? What if...

Nona

What is it? Have you worked something out?

Aldo

No. It's just that I saw something similar before, in Elzion. The townspeople were there, and then they weren't. They disappeared, surrounded by a light... Within a moment, it had turned into a ghost town, as if no one had ever been there at all.

Nona

Oh my gosh, that's so sad! That's such a terrible thing to go through! So, uh, what caused it?

Aldo

Hmm... Well, the past changed, which caused the future to change and be rewritten before my eyes. It went from the future I was originally in, to a new future that had been changed in the past.

Nona

Rewritten? So why would the Marie and the children appear and then disappear?

Aldo

I don't know. But perhaps... In addition to this "present" where we are now, there's another "present" in which everyone stays together?

Nona

What?! So what we just saw was another possibility?

Aldo

Yes. But since they vanished straight away, I don't think this is a case of rewritten history like in Elzion. I think it's more likely one of many overlapping possibilities happened to flicker before us for a moment.

Nona

Oh... Then why did we see it? It happened when you were trying to cut that rift with Ogre Rancorem, right?

Aldo

Right. So maybe we should try to work out why that rift appeared there in the first place?

Nona

If it was the makings of a wormhole, then there must be a key connecting to that future we saw through there. So maybe we saw what we saw because we interfered?

Aldo

The question is, why did it appear now?

Nona

When you've gone through wormholes before, you've always ended up saving people, right? So maybe someone in need of help opened this up?

Aldo

So it's to save them? Ivan accepted that ending, I can't imagine he would have opened up the wormhole. And I can't imagine Marie or the children having that kind of power...

Wait. What if it's not limited to people on the island?

Nona

But if it wasn't someone on the island, then who?

Aldo

The time layer itself.

Nona

Oh! Actually, yeah... The White Night Time Layer must be pretty powerful, given the lengths it went to trying to preserve history.

Aldo

Then maybe the version of history in which Marie and the kids stay here is how this time layer was meant to be.

But then history changed, the loop was broken, time stopped rewinding, and connected to a new future. Leaving the children in that form, separated from Marie.

Nona

Oh!

Aldo

So maybe the time layer itself created a wormhole in order to return history to how it was meant to be. But why stop part-way?

Nona

Maybe it didn't have enough power to create the whole wormhole? Maybe it used what little power it had left after all those distortions in history and time loops... But it wasn't enough?

Aldo

Yeah, you could be right.

Nona

If it is, we need make sure everyone is able to stay together!

I don't really know what we can do yet, but... But... I really don't want to accept that ending! If there's a way to stop all this... We've gotta do it! If there's a future where Marie and the children can be happy...

Aldo

I feel the same! If there's still something we can do, then we should do it!

Nona

Right! But, what DO we do? I don't think we'll be able to open up the wormhole by cutting it this time...

Aldo

If you're right about it not having enough power, then I guess we need to supplement it somehow.

Nona

With what?

Aldo

Um, I hadn't worked that part out yet... There must be something somewhere.

Nona

I'm sure we'll think of something. Actually, I have an idea. The vortex we were in before had a lot of power, enough to influence the worlds around it. Maybe we should go back to Arat and see if we can find anything out there.

Aldo

Yeah, that could work. Okay, if we find anything interesting, we'll come back here.

You can't proceed without Nona.

You won't be able to switch maps or edit your party lineup for a while. Proceed with the quest anyway?

You won't be able to switch maps or edit your party lineup for a while. Proceed with the quest anyway?

Aldo

Huh? I was sure that the wormhole opening was right here. I was hoping these fragments would help give it a little more power...

Nona

Isn't that it?

Aldo

Hey, you're right! But it looks a lot smaller and weaker than before.

Nona

Maybe it's trying to continue history as it is. I wish we could go to change the future with these fragments...

Aldo

The rift... It's smaller than it was before.

Nona

Let's try the fragment out fast!

Aldo

Okay, but... There's just the two of us here. We're missing someone.

Nona

Mariel!

You're so right! Mariel would...

......

Actually, never mind. Come on, let's go get Mariel!

Aldo

Right! Mariel should be in Unigan!

Mariel

Is that...true?

Aldo

Yes, if we go through this rift, we might be able to change how things ended.

It's worked in the past, when we were in a similar situation.

Nona

Obviously, there's no guarantee that it will work. And I know it will be really hard on you if we fail...

Mariel

......

It's fine. Thank you both. I'm absolutely coming with you.

Aldo

Mariel...

Mariel

After I got back, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I couldn't accept it. I've had enough of doing nothing and regretting everything. And...

I want to see them again. I want to see those happy children, and Marie, smiling lovingly at them.

Nona

Yeah, me too!

Aldo

Then that's settled. All right, let's give it a go.

Nona

Oh! The wormhole!

Aldo, look!

Aldo

It's been restored!

Looks like the wormhole's been restored!

Nona

Through here, there's got to be a way to change Marie and the children's fate! But who knows what point it will take us to.

Aldo

Before, the branch point in time was when we grew that dangerous plant.

Mariel

So just before the children came to the field?

Nona

First, we've got to keep the children away from the field.

Mariel

Right. And next, we've got to talk to Ivan and Marie.

Yes, I really want to talk to them again. I need to confront them!

Nona

Okay, let's go! This time, let's make sure everyone ends up happy!

Aldo

Let's go!

Nona

Have we gone back in time?

Aldo

Looks that way, but I can't tell from inside the forest. I'd like to check on that plant, but first thing's first, we should go back to the clock tower.

Mariel

Right! We need to make sure the children are okay!

You will be unable to switch between maps for a while.

I-Is something wrong?

Yay! Mariel!

Nat

And Nona! And Aldo! Where'd you go?

Oh... Marie... Children!

Enoch

What's wrong? Why're you all crying?

Verdi

Did somethin' sad happen? Lemme comfort you.

Mariel

Thank you... Would you mind all giving me a hug?

Tia

Yay! Time for cuddles!

Nona

I wanna join in, too! Come on, Aldo, get in there!

Aldo

Okay...

Nona

This isn't a dream...

Elias

It's nap time after.

Liam

You gonna nap, too?

Mariel

Oh, we'd love to, but there's a little something we've got to do first.

Marie

Are you going to the field? I do so appreciate all that you've done for us, but please don't pressure yourselves too much.

Nona

Nope! Not the field, umm... We saw the floor was damaged when we were cleaning up before. We thought we'd fix it... Oh, and also...I can't imagine this will be a problem since it's in the middle of the forest, but... No matter what, don't go to the field, okay? If you need anything there, come to us. Got it?

Marie

Hm?

Tia

'kay!

Amalie

The forest ain't safe. We promise not to go there.

Mariel

Teehee. You're all so good. Now, go off for your nap with Marie.

And...

Marie...I'd like to talk to you when nap time's over. Can you spare me some time?

Marie

Sure.

Mariel

Thank you! See you later!

Nona

(Let's go to Ivan!)

Marie

Hm...

Tia

Mama! Time for sleepy-sleeps!

Marie

Yes, let's go.

68. Scene 68

Nona

Ivan, where are you?

???

Why have you come back?

Mariel

Ivan! Oh, thank goodness you're still alive!

Ivan

The children were able to survive. They were heading for paradise, their eyes so full of hope. My life may have ended, but I was able to leave Marie on that ship. Given how she was treated in their true history, she likely would have lived to old age on the mainland. Marie and the children all survived. They weren't walking corpses, they didn't go insane. For the first time ever, it was a success!

We may never get that future again! So why?! Why would you turn back time? Why would you return it all to nothing? I thought I told you, I'd repeated these events HUNDREDS of times before you came here! But I'd never seen that result! I thought my wish had come true at long last! I thought a happy future had finally been bestowed upon them! So why would you do this?!

Mariel

You're the only one who was happy with how things turned out! Even if the children were feeling euphoric at the time...

That was probably just because they were intoxicated by their fusion with that plant!

And what's more! I don't care what you think, Marie wasn't happy at all!

Ivan

Tch!

Mariel

Didn't you see her chase after the children, then break down in tears?

She... I'm sure she'd get angry if she knew I was saying this... But she truly loved the life she had with you and the children. So much so that she was willing to kill for it!

So how can you expect her to be happy, when her life and her family is taken from her?

Nona

We'll look for another future! Everything you tried to protect has been destroyed! This isn't a happy ending!

Aldo

You said that you love Marie and the children.

So don't compromise! Don't accept that ending!

Ivan

Compromise? That's absurd! I felt genuine relief at the way things ended. No matter what you say, so long as they get to live, and survive with a chance at happiness... So long as then don't turn into those monsters like in their true history, then I am satisfied!

Nona

No! That's still not good enough! Let's say that you're right, and Marie and the children are able to survive... You will still end up dead! And you won't be with Marie!

Ivan

Why would you...

Aldo

I had a little talk with Marie in the previous time loop. I didn't entirely understand what she was saying, but...

Marie

It sounds to me like resignation comes all too easily for you. You are so like him. I'm sure you'd throw away your own values for the sake of others, and only ever look forward. You only ever see what's right in front of you, as if it's the only thing that matters.

Aldo

I think she was talking about you. It was difficult to understand the full meaning behind her words... But it sounded like Marie couldn't bear what you were doing to yourself. She didn't want you to die.

You know, Ivan... If there was someone I really wanted to save, and I could do so by sacrificing myself... I know that I'd take that option. I'd give them all I had, if I thought it would help.

Nona

Aldo...

Aldo

But...when I saw Marie so distressed, so desperate not to lose you all... Wanting to use us for our meat just to keep you and the children alive...

I realized, by giving up on yourself, the ones you care about most will be the ones who suffer. You may have thought it was a good choice... But it led people to resort to such a sad course of action, just to avoid it.

Ivan

......

Aldo

I know that you've accepted this fate. But to me, it just sounds like you've given up. On your own life, on others' greatest happiness. Though her methods were so, so wrong, Marie was fighting on, doing just about everything she could for you.

Ivan

...... Well...

Mariel

Charity is for others, not yourself. If you don't truly consider those you're meant to be helping... It may stop your heart from aching, and it may feel like you did the right thing...

But in the end, there's no meaning in it.

Ivan

......

Marie

Ivan...

Stop this, please! I'm serious. If you keep hacking away at your own body, what will happen to you? Do you expect your life to go on as normal?

No, I hate this! It's wrong, all wrong! How can I accept someone I care about shortening their own life like this? And how can you expect me to?

You wouldn't let me use my power of purification because of the harm it caused. And yet you go and do this?!

Why don't you understand? Why? When we feel the same way... Why won't you turn to me?

Ivan

When she cried to me...

I always thought that, no matter how heartbreaking it was, there was no other way. In order to realize an ideal happiness that I myself had chosen for them... I put her, her feelings, those priorities, below that ideal future. I viewed it as one individual's pain, trivial in the face of the greater good.

Aldo

......

Ivan

But ultimately... The reason she became so desperate, why she decided to take such risks all on her own... It was all because of me.

I wish to start again.

Mariel

Ivan!

Ivan

Let's seek this greatest happiness.

Nona

Let's do it! Let's make sure you, Marie, and the children, can all be together!

Ivan

...... The plant you grew in the last time loop will still be growing now.

Aldo

The thing that fused with the children?! What was that?

Ivan

I don't know myself.

Nona

We found an account in the cabin in the woods, that seemed to be talking about it. But all it said was that it was dangerous to eat.

Mariel

You know what I think? I think whoever wrote that must've had some kind of hypothesis about the plant.

And maybe, just maybe, they wrote it down. It could still be in that hut somewhere! Even if not, there might be other clues...

Ivan

A cabin in the woods?

Nona

Ivan?

Ivan

From what I've seen, it grows faster than normal plants. You should go as soon as possible. It will follow the same path. I will send you there using my power.

???

Ivan?

Marie

I came to check where these supposed broken floorboards were... But what are you doing here? What is going on?

Mariel

Marie! Um...

Ivan

Go.

Marie

Where did you send them?

Ivan, just what are you up to?

Ivan

Listen to me, Marie. I...

Aldo

Are we here?

Nona

That's the hut! Worried as I am about Marie, let's get looking for that plant account!

Mariel

Hurry! We can't let that future happen again!

A board on the bookshelf looks loose. Remove it?

You found a small, old notebook behind it.

My madness appears to continue. That girl I found is still at home. I cannot relax in that house now that there is another under its roof. But by her reticent expression... I can almost understand what she's been through. If she has nowhere to go, and wants to escape the islanders, then this is the perfect place for her. I told her she could spend her time as she pleases, and returned to my experiments. I felt her eyes on me as I sat at my desk.

My life with the girl continues. ยฅ^ As she walks around the house, she keeps looking between the bookshelf and what I was holding. ยฅ^ Curiosity should be respected. Not that anyone else on the island feels that way. ยฅ^ She seems unable to read, so I have been teaching her along with other educational basics.

It seems the girl has no name. ยฅ^ Refusing to name a child robs them of their essential dignity, I feel. ยฅ^ But when she asked me to name her, I found myself at a loss. ยฅ^ I am an old man. I have no knack for naming children. ยฅ^ Much less a girl. However, in the end, I agreed.

She opened up to me, about the power she obtained. ยฅ^ The power of purification... The light she emits heals wounds and cures poison. ยฅ^ I had fallen, and was in grave condition, but she saved me. ยฅ^ It was then that I began to warn her not to use it recklessly. We do not know what the power takes from her as its price. And if she ever encounters one of the fools from the village... ยฅ^ She must never let them see.

A shock. She knows everything. Everything I had hidden from her. ยฅ^ I don't know what drove her to such lengths, but I refused to bend. ยฅ^ This life...my decision for it. I hid my will from her. Finally, she agreed to drop the matter, and I was able to smooth things over. ยฅ^ I am fortunate, at least, to keep this burden from her shoulders.

She looks so happy whenever she hears the birds singing. She hums as she does the cooking and cleaning, then indulges in a book in the afternoon. She asked me to tell her about my books... And I began to feel a pain in my chest.

The more I get used to living with her, the more unanswerable questions fill my brain. About the right way. For a parent. For an adult. What is a parent to a child? What should an adult be? Is merely feeding them enough to make you a parent? Does protecting an immature body make you an adult? And what about children? The potential behaviors that the immature have toward adults, or their parents... They only receive. With food... No, perhaps with everything passive... When they are young and lack the knowledge, they can't make decisions. They can't even refuse. Worrying, hating, deciding. What brings them joy? What brings them down? Without knowledge, there is nowhere to go. Without experience, no decisions can be made. My heart aches when I look at her because she shines so bright. Acquiring knowledge without limitation, thinking freely, truly living like a human. Then... What about the children of the island? I couldn't save them that day, those children whose innocence was forced upon them. Forced innocence is a tragedy in itself. Obedience when there is no other choice is basically distortion. I remembered, oh so vividly, the sinfulness of not giving the children an education. And the sin of standing by. So I...

The bottom of the drawer looks loose. Remove it?

You found a record bound in thread beneath the drawer's false bottom.

About that seed. At first, I thought it was another failure, as per usual. All the plants of the island have something about them that is harmful to humans. They shoot spores, intoxicate, harm organs, and grow poisonous blooms. I wondered whether such a new species had been created by the forest ecosystem. I don't think it's suitable for eating. As a food source, it is a failure. That is what I thought at the time.

The failed plant still bothers me, even though I know it could never be possible to use it as a food source. While out gathering, I continued to visit the plant and investigate further. But something didn't feel right. Not with the plant, within myself. During my investigations, I felt disturbed. I felt like I was floating, I felt euphoric...and tense. Like my brain was being eroded away without me even realizing. I picked up part of the plant with an instrument. But just before I cut into the tissue... I became lucid again. Yet it felt as if our eyes had met.

As I got away from the plant and made my way home, I felt something, almost instinctively. There's something fundamentally wrong about that plant. And I was right. After studying the cell tissue, I found that the tissue arrangement... Was different from that of a plant. Or an animal. Or even a monster. It was an unknown, an impossible arrangement. No, if I had to say, the closest thing to it is...

What is it? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't horrified. And yet, I kept going to it. It feels like breaking a taboo. But I couldn't give up now. More and more, I am convinced I feel its gaze upon me. This plant, growing from the soil, is looking at me. ยฅ^ I was right that it's unsuitable as food. But the reason why that is, is changing.

I heard a voice. I can't say for certain that I was of a right mind at the time, but I know what I heard. Just for a moment. It wasn't using our language. It did speak. It looked at me and said something. I remembered the plant tissue arrangement I had examined before... That unknown arrangement that somewhat resembled that of a human.

I went back to its growing site as per usual, but it wasn't there. I turned around, and then I saw it. It had freed itself from the constraints of the ground, and was standing on its own feet.

I remembered what the people of the village and the tower always used to say so hysterically. The Golden Child. A blessed race of human... That would adapt to this island of poison. No, God's Island, as they call it. That the devout believers who live on the island will someday conceive in their womb a golden child. And, by the will of God, this child will be unlike other humans, and will be kept alive by God's tears. God's tears? How ridiculous. Inedible poison would be more accurate. In any case, their Golden Child is a human like no other. It can survive on this island. It can consume the flora and fauna of the island, without suffering any harm at all. What if I've found it? The only difference is that it was not born of a human womb. But still, this plant... Well, perhaps "plant" is no longer the right word... But what if it was the Golden Child? It has a cell tissue arrangement closely resembling that of humans, the intelligence to speak... And it is an independent lifeform. Even if their assertions are nonsense, depending on your definition... Surely you could call this a "new human" that has adapted to the island? I had to calm myself. What should I do with this lifeform? This ambiguous lifeform, skirting between the human and the not... Should I observe its development, or nurture it myself? Should I capture it and repeat the experiment? As I pondered this and that, I realized that there was something I could not give up. It was so very trivial compared to the discovery of a new kind of human... But to me, it was a matter that I could no longer ignore.

I went there, carrying a sharp knife and a flint. "What are you thinking?" The creature cried out, looking at me. Before, I would have left it alone. I wouldn't have cared what happened. But now, I cannot choose that path. I have a house in these woods... And the child lives there. I put my own personal feelings first. I chose which life to prioritize. But just as I was about to swing the knife at the creature, using my one good arm... She ran out from behind the trees.

She went along with my decision. We buried the lifeform, it was the least we could do, then the two of us went home. Once everything was over, it felt like it was all just a daydream. It must have evolved by taking nourishment from the crystal- proximate water. While I was out walking, it came to me. If that's the case, then how ironic... I felt somewhat cold as I realized just what this island was... When the daydream dissipated, the coldness tickled the back of my neck.

71. Scene 71

Nona

Wait... What did all that mean?

Mariel

There was so much to read, I'm still so confused.

Aldo

But it looks like that plant we grew... Was a new human...a person.

Mariel

I still can't quite believe it. But reading those journals... Quite a few passages made a lot of sense. They tied in perfectly with what's happened so far with us. In the previous time loop, the plant did seem to speak.

It seemed like only the children could hear it. But at the very least, they were able to converse. Which means...

It has thoughts, and a will of its own?

Nona

But how am I meant to turn around and accept that the plant thing we grew is actually a person?

Though right now, I guess it doesn't really matter whether it's a person or not.

Unless we do something, it's going to fuse with the children again. And if we want Marie and the children to be happy, then we need to nip this danger in the bud. It was us who grew it, so it's our responsibility to do something. But...

Mariel

It may not look anything like a person, but if it is one after all...

Aldo

Then it's no longer a case of simply pulling up a dangerous plant. It's the same as killing someone you've raised yourself.

What should we do?

Mariel

If we don't do anything, that previous time loop will repeat itself! If we can't pull it up, then we've got to deprive it of water to stop it from growing, or...

No, that's no different. It's still attacking something that won't fight back...

Nona

Urgh, I don't know what to do! My head feels like it's gonna explode!

But at least we know one thing! We know we have to do something right now. The question is, what.

Aldo

We could keep the children away from the plant. It's a simple plan, but...

Nona

If we fail, and they manage to talk to it again, then that tragedy will repeat itself.

Mariel

Then first...

We need to let them know that the plant is dangerous.

Aldo

Then we need to get back to the clock tower. If we can talk to Phantom and maybe even Marie... Then at least we'll be taking a different route from the last time loop.

Nona

You know, the field's actually pretty close by. Why don't we take a quick little look? Find out how big it's grown.

Aldo

No, it's too dangerous to go near before we've warned them of its danger! We've got to go back to the clock tower first.

???

Welcome back.

Mariel

Marie!

Marie

My, my, why are we rushing? Sweat too much and you'll catch a chill.

Nona

We erm... Um, how to put this? You see...

Marie

......

Oh, I think I know something that would help calm you down a little.

That thing you were growing is still a while off maturing. You don't need to worry about it yet.

Aldo

Huh?

Marie

You've found out what it is, haven't you? That's why you look so panicked.

Mariel

You knew about that plant, Marie? But how...

Marie

I don't know what you've seen or what you know... But I can guess. You went to that cabin. Ivan sent you there.

Nona

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot about Ivan! Last we saw, you two were talking in the clock tower.

Marie

I left him behind.

He's so cruel. He never took the slightest bit of notice of anything I said on the matter.

But five minutes with you, and suddenly he's apologizing to me for everything. It made me so angry! I feel so disrespected. Besides, it's too little, far too late.

Aldo

Don't say that, Marie! Ivan genuinely...

Marie

And another thing.

I know that you've come to my paradise many times now. Turning back time, over and over.

Mariel

Did Ivan tell you that?

Marie

No. I worked it out for myself. Somehow, you knew in detail things that only Ivan and I knew. You've been acting strange ever since you returned from outside. Like going to see a broken floor...

Aldo

Oh...

Marie

And I remembered. Ivan often used to say these strange things. This time this, next time that... It reminded me of that. So I thought, perhaps this wasn't your first time here.

I don't understand, though. Why have you come to my paradise? What are you plotting?

Mariel

We're not plotting! We just want to save you from this environ...

Marie

I don't expect you to save me.

Mariel

Well... Maybe you don't. I understand that this is my own selfish feeling...

Marie

Oh? What an unexpected reaction. Perhaps a previous me has said something to you in one of the many other times we've been through this.

So I will tell you, again and again. I don't expect you to save me. Your involvement... Is so incredibly self-righteous.

Nona

Marie...

Mariel

Huh?

Marie

Oh? You've been through this time and time again, yet the previous me never said that? Perhaps the previous me could better tolerate this resentment I feel toward you. If so, I commend her.

Mariel

Resentment? Wh-Why do you resent us?

Marie

Your involvement... Is so incredibly self-righteous. That's why it's so irritating. You think you can save us. You, who've never truly suffered. You, who are mere visitors here.

Nona

Marie, that's...

Marie

Yes, yes, I know. But my, you're so very sensitive to everything I say, you've gotten yourself sidetracked. Have you forgotten all about the cabin? About the plant?

Aldo

Oh yeah! How did you know about that?

Marie

That cabin was once my home.

Mariel

What?!

Marie

Well technically, the house belonged to my adoptive father of sorts. The man who raised me. He hid it from me, but when he started acting strange at home, I got worried and followed him. I secretly followed him many times after that, deep into the forest. I saw the plant, I read all his records. You've read them too, I presume?

Aldo

Then you knew what it was from the very beginning? Why didn't you stop us from growing it? Why did you stand back and do nothing?

Marie

Because you actually grew it.

Aldo

Huh?

Marie

It was growing well. I wanted it to grow. That's why I didn't stop you.

There was a time when I genuinely thought I didn't need that thing. However... After he'd gone, I planted those seeds time and time again. I'd scour the forest, looking for them.

Nona

You did?

Marie

But it failed, every single time. Sometimes it wouldn't sprout, or maybe it would wither and die. I went back to my old house of painful memories and researched and tweaked my methodology like crazy. But I always failed. I had no talent for it.

I went deep into the forest, changed the water, changed the soil, changed its hours of sunlight, and so on. I knew how to handle a knife, though I'd only ever used it for cooking while my father was there. But, that forest gets more dangerous the further in your tread. And those seeds were only ever in such areas.

I desperately clung to my knife as I moved through the forest, monsters attacking left and right. Finally I found it, and planted it. It failed to bear fruit. And yet...

That plant I had tried so desperately to grow for so long, you grew successfully the moment you arrived.

I was so shocked, so angry! I felt worthless! Of course you have luck on your side, you have a true saint! These great heroes who came from out there to bring salvation to my little paradise, they harbor no false saints!

That's what I thought. So I decided to let you grow it. And if you managed to follow it through to conclusion, then I would snatch it from you.

Nona

Why would you do that? Why would you want that "human" so badly?

Marie

Oh, it's not so important. At least, not to you. But to me, it's everything.

Vengeance.

Mariel

Vengeance? Do you mean...

Impure child of sin! Your ashen eyes are a punishment from God. That is why your eyes cannot see this beautiful island.

???

No, I...

Our Saint!

I knew you would awaken! As God's messenger, as a saint!

You are our hope! So beautiful...

Marie, you must raise our children! Only you can raise them into pure, sinless children of God!

Mariel

On the villagers? They acted dreadfully toward you. They cornered you, they gave you no choice.

Marie

......

How did you know that? Oh, I guess a genuine saint like you is able peek into other people's pasts without their permission.

Mariel

I'm so sorry! I don't know why I was able to see it! No, that's just an excuse, isn't it? A person's past is theirs alone, and I...

Marie

It's fine. I feel a weight off my shoulders knowing I have less secrets to keep. But, yes. I used to be persecuted for being a poor-sighted outcast.

How much do you know about this island? The mystical forest, the Poison Island, the Golden Island...

Oh, did you see the crystals in the water? You must have! That's how you grew that thing, right? Serves it right, doesn't it? In the end...

Teehee. Oh, never mind. I won't say that, it's too pathetic. My point is, this island is made up of the rotten, stupid dreams of stupid adults.

Excessive dreams, excessive prayers. They all had such strange eyes. The adults alienated me due to some arbitrary standard of theirs. Day and night, they fed me the most poisonous foods. I kept eating them. I was too hungry not to. I writhed in agony every time. Then one day, when I had completely lost track of how long I had been living that way...

*cough cough* *cough cough*

Gah... Haahhh...

(It hurts... It hurts so much.) (Am I going to die? Little by little... They kept making me eat...) (Am I...)

*pant*

(No...)

(No, no, NO! It's not fair! It's not fair!) (I want to be happy, too!) (I don't need to be very happy... Just a little. Just a tiny bit happy...) (Everyone else is happy. Why can't... Why can't...)

Why can't something good happen to me for once?

Hng?!

Huh?

I can breathe... I don't hurt... And... And I can see?

So this is what it's like to see? It's incredible! It's so beautiful!

Hm? What is this light? It's so clear... It feels good!

......

*gasp* I don't feel numb! I can...eat this?

Wow! I don't believe it! This is incredible!

I feel like... Like God...

(Why? Why has...my body...)

???

Hey, are you okay?! Pull it together!

Marie

I gained the power of purification, but collapsed the first time I ever used it. That's when Father found me.

Mariel

Pure light...

Wait, that light... It's the Pure Cradle! Why would you...

Marie

You know it? Perhaps a previous me showed it to you. Or perhaps you can use it, too?

Oh, you know it? Perhaps you can use it, too. You are a genuine saint, after all.

After my father was gone, I had an opportunity to show this power to the islanders. It was quite by chance. And then, they changed their tune. They called me a saint.

They called me the wielder of Pure Light. They celebrated me, the girl they had once persecuted, and offered me their children.

Funny, isn't it? So for my first act of vengeance, I decided to raise their children. As pure beings obedient to me. As beautiful beings that would never leave. As young beings who will never hurt me, whose ignorance would flatter my self-esteem by comparison.

Aldo

Marie! But...

I thought you genuinely...

Marie

My next act of vengeance... Was to create the Golden Child the islanders so desperately sought. The new human.

Absurd as it sounds, if I could hold in my hands the being that they had sought their whole lives... And keep this thing for myself, blinding it with love...then oh, how good must that feel!

Yes. I only agreed to raise the children because I thought it would be good practice.

And by creating this new human and raising it as my own... I could extract my revenge on my father.

Mariel

Your father? Why him?

Marie

Well... ......

You read his records, didn't you? He once sought that glory for himself.

But he got scared and killed it. Saying it was too soon for us. That was such a waste. He kept going on about humanity, and how he didn't know what this thing was, and blah blah blah... Still, I...

Oh, how rude of me! I've been talking your ears off, haven't I?

What's wrong, Mariel? You seem to be scowling at me, yet you've the saddest look on your face. Please, don't bite your lip so. You'll make it bleed.

Mariel

I...

I don't... I don't know what to say to you right now!

Marie

Teehee. It's fine to be angry. Even people with unethical and ugly desires would agree there.

Mariel

No! I'm not finished! You're not someone who can be dismissed so simply!

I've always wanted to be close to you! Every time loop, I've wanted to say so much to you! When I came here, I made up my mind! This time, I'm going to talk to you! I'm going to look you in the eyes and talk to you, and I'm not going to lose my composure this time!

I thought about what you were saying, and I felt like it was a world I knew.

And yet now, when I hear about your past, your thoughts, your ambitions, I... I'm ashamed to admit, I can't come up with what I need to say. My emotions get swayed...

Marie

Between "I want to save you" and "I can't forgive you"? Or between "pathetic" and "cruel"?

Even so, that's a bit much.

Do you change your principles the moment you hear something that inspires sympathy? You paint over your disgust with compassion, and change your position in an instant. Isn't that basically just a form of narcissism?

Mariel

......

Marie!

Marie! You're a very good talker!

Marie

Huh?

Mariel

I can't ever win an argument against you! You obliterate me every time! But even so...!

But even so... Even if I can't convince you about anything... I still want to help you! Even in the midst of all this chaos, that one thing has never changed!

Marie

......

Mariel

I want to hold your hand! I want to see a genuine smile on your face! And I want you to be saved! And now I've lost my temper, so I'm speaking on impulse!

I'm holding my hand out to you. Please don't hide yours behind your back! That's all I ask! That's honestly all I ask! Something will change this time!

Marie

Urgh! Just shut up!

I don't need your help.

Mariel

......

Marie

Mariel, have you ever touched another's heart, right up to the end of their life?

Mariel

Touch another's heart with the purest of feelings. That's one of the teachings at the temple. Don't think about how it will affect you, just pray for their happiness wholeheartedly.

There's a priestess who taught me about the priesthood. She's like a sister to me. Well, she once said... Prayers are for the people. It shows the pureness of your heart and the depth of your love to all people. This is the only thing that's important to remember for us priestesses.

Marie

Such nice words. But sadly... To me, those words ring shallow. So shallow they're practically splashing around in the shoal.

If you reach out to everyone with a pure heart and the deepest of love... And you pull toward you the hand hidden behind my back, and you hold on tight... Well, how long will it last? How long will you hold on?

Mariel

Huh?

Marie

Until the very end of your life? Surely not. While you interpret your doctrine? Or will you just hold my hand long enough to say thank you?

Because if you're only saving them temporarily, then leaving the rest to their own regenerative abilities... Is that really saving them? Even if they feel like they've been saved while you hold their hand and smile sweetly at them... What about those who lack the strength to stand after that euphoric moment has passed?

Mariel

Oh, um...

Not everyone is that weak! And you... You have a strong will! You can walk, supported by the shining light...

Marie

God may give a revelation, but he loves the lamb such that he won't let it go. After God leaves, the lamb is lost. Searching for the golden-haired God who gave it light in the darkness.

In that sense, you're just like God. With God's graceful hand, you would destroy this paradise of salvation that I have created here. Showing us all hope with temporary salvation. Captivating our hearts with temporary euphoria. God's companions are the same. They gave my children the fruit of wisdom, but it is meaningless in this world.

So what are you going to do? Rummage around, trample over everything, and then just leave?

Mariel

But!

It's still not right to deprive your children of knowledge they should have! Or to cover their eyes! You... You cling to this place, obsessed with revenge, unable to trust anyone... You're not able to see anyone in any true sense, not Ivan, and not the children either. You can't spend your whole life on this island, on this fake paradise!

Marie

Fake?! How dare you! You...you horrible, awful...

Why are you acting so righteous? Why must you do everything right? I... I...

I can't be happy unless I think this way, unless I stay here! Can't you understand that?

???

Eeep?

Tia

Mama?

Nona

Children? What are you doing here?

Elias

There was a strange man... It was like he was glowing. He came and told us... He said to come to you, said he'd protect us...

Enoch

So we went through the forest... B-But...

Monica

Is that you, M-Mama?

Liam

Why do you have such a scary look on your face?

Marie

......

Go back to the house, NOW!

Kids

Eep!

Nona

Marie!

Marie

*sigh* Whatever. They've seen me angry. They'll hate me now. If there's no sense keeping up appearances, then why bother? I'm so very tired.

Nona

Oh...

Aldo

Wait... They said there was a glowing man. Was that Ivan? Even if he was able to protect them on the way out, will they be okay on the way back?

Nona

G-Good point! We've got to go after them!

Mariel

You're right! We can't let anything happen to them! If even just one of us goes after them...

Marie

No.

That thing has almost grown, and Ivan's time is nearly up... I need your meat.

Aldo

Not this again!

Marie

Again, you say. So I've done this before, in the times you've repeated?

Nona

Marie, stop this! Please! Just try to calm down!

The children are afraid of you, and if Ivan's not long for this world... Then what good is turning us into meat? Who will that make happy? For whose sake do you wield that blade? You've turned your means into an end!

Marie

It's for me.

Everything I've done...I've done for my own sake. So if I get rid of you three unwanted visitors, then I know that will make me very happy!

Mariel

No, Marie! You're wrong! So very wrong! Don't abandon yourself to despair! I don't care how much we clash with words... I will not let you dirty your hands! So give me that knife! Now!

Hand over that knife! Please...hurry!

Marie

Oh, do shut up! There's that obnoxious face again! That conviction that only you could POSSIBLY be right!

???

STOP!

Mariel

Children?

Marie

Huh?

Tia

Stop it, Mariel! Please! Don't be mean to Mama!

Mariel

No, you don't understand! I'm not being mean to her, I'm...

Andre

When Mama pulled that scary face, there were tears in her eyes!

Nat

We've never seen Mama cry before!

Enoch

I think she was cryin' 'cause she was sad from fighting.

Verdi

Mama's super kind! You know that, don't you?

Serena

So stop it! Poor Mama...

Monica

She's always telling us not to be mean to others!

Nona

N-No, children...

Aldo

We're not being mean to her, honest! We just...

Amalie

Really?

Elias

So why'd you look so scary? Why were you crying, Mama?

Liam

Mama?

Marie

...... I was angry.

Those people...

......

......

Elias

There was a strange man... It was like he was glowing. He came and told us... He said to come to you, said he'd protect us...

Ivan

Listen to me, Marie. I...

Mariel

Marie

It's for me.

Everything I've done...I've done for my own sake. So if I get rid of you three unwanted visitors, then I know that will make me very happy!

???

STOP!

Marie

...... Oh...

Tia

Mama?

Marie

I... I wasn't being bullied.

I was the one doing the bullying. I was the one being mean to them.

Monica

Huh?!

Mariel

Marie?

Marie

I was in the wrong. I was always in the wrong.

Enoch

Wh-Why say that, Mama? There's no way!

Serena

What's wrong, Mama?

Marie

I'll tell you why I was in the wrong later. Along with so many other things I never told you...

Nat

Wh-What d'you mean?

Mariel

Marie, why are you suddenly...

Marie

...... After all that fuss I made, I must seem like a fool. But...

I don't know. I've had a sudden change of heart. It's just... Seeing the children run to defend me, trusting in me completely after I raised my voice at them so... I realized I was wrong. This wasn't how I wanted to raise them.

Mariel, you and...and Ivan... And Aldo, and Nona... and even my father... You all said things I tried so hard to reject. I wanted so badly to ignore it. I thought I'd lose if I ever accepted it. But all of a sudden, I see it. I accept it.

Aldo

Marie...

Marie

If they had simply run off, I never would have awakened. Though, who's to say yet whether my awakening is for the better. ......

My feelings about you still haven't changed all too much. I hate you, I envy you. You're sly, you're just awful. But... But...

I think I was wrong after all. I can't blame you like I did. I...

Are you laughing at me?

Mariel

Not at all.

Marie

Do you hate me?

Mariel

No, not at...

Well, maybe just a little, before.

Marie

Oh...

...... I'm sorry, Mariel.

Mariel

I can't accept your apology. I still haven't found an answer to that question you asked me.

...... I'm sorry, Marie.

Marie

Don't apologize. My emotions always get the better of me whenever I talk to you. And I'm still bitter, so hearing you apologize is just irritating me.

Mariel

Teehee.

Marie

Why are you laughing? Stop it...

Verdi

Mama, are you okay now?

Marie

Yes, I'm okay.

Aldo, and Nona... Will you escort the children to the clock tower? I think I'm still too weak to stand.

Nona

No problem!

Aldo

Of course we will! What about you, though?

Marie

I'll return in a little while. Let's reconvene on the top floor, where Ivan is.

Nona

Got it!

Marie!

Marie

Yes?

Nona

I like you, Marie! I've actually liked you all this time!

Marie

You have?

Nona

Yeah! Because you act like such a mom! I feel kinda spoiled. Teehee. Anyway, I've really enjoyed it. So... I'm really glad that it looks like you might head toward happiness at last. This might not make sense to you, but I'm still glad I got it off my chest! Anyway, see you later!

Marie

What was that?

Mariel

Teehee. Who knows.

Marie

You, her, and Aldo... You're all such strange people. I can't understand you.

73. Scene 73

Aldo

Oh, there you are!

Marie

Sorry we're a little late. Thank you for escorting the...

Ivan...

Ivan

Welcome back, Marie.

Marie

You sent the children to me, right?

Ivan

I did.

Marie

......

Thank you, Ivan. That must have been hard on you. You should rest. I don't want you to push yourself any further.

Ivan

I wouldn't say I'm pushing my...

Oh, why pretend? Thank you, Marie. I will do as you suggest, and leave to take some rest. Call me if you need anything.

Marie

You're welcome. Thank you for listening to me.

So, what are you all going to do now? Judging from the looks on your faces, I'm assuming you think the plant must be stopped? So, are you going to kill it, as my father did? Or...

Nona

Actually, I think we should make sure we're all on the same page first. There's a lot I want to ask you. And having been through other time loops, I imagine there's things only we can tell you, too.

And once we're up to speed, maybe then we can think about what to do next.

Marie

Okay. Let's do that.

So that's what happened in the previous time loops?

Aldo

Unless we do something, the children will meet a terrible fate. We have to stop that from happening.

Nona

But it's a person, so we can't just kill it...

Marie

......

I've been obsessing about that thing far longer than you... But now that I think about it, I feel like killing it really was the right choice. A dreamlike feat symbolizing this stupid island. Whatever this thing is, if there's a chance it will drive people crazy or harm anyone... Then perhaps my father's was the right choice all along.

That said, I feel as if I've just awoken from a long dream. I'm not confident that I'm able to think right. I can't even say with confidence that I'm sane right now.

Nona

Marie...{lang-nuance}Nona, worries over Marie, who has just woken up.{/lang-nuance}

Marie

If I can't trust myself, perhaps I should listen to those with me.

Mariel, what would you do?

Mariel

Huh?

I...

...... I...

For the children's sake, I can't help but feel it's best to nip this danger in the bud. However... I'm not so sure.

Marie

Because it's human?

Mariel

There is that, but... That's not all, either. I don't know if I can really express it well, but...

If we picked that plant... Would it really be any different from pulling the children's eyes out? And once I thought that, I... I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Marie

Ah...

......

Aldo

Are you saying we should see that plant the same way we see the children of the clock tower?

Mariel

M-Maybe? It's just a feeling, so I can't explain it all too well... But that's how I happen to think... Um...

Marie

Well, what would you do with that thing, Mariel? I trust you to make the right decision. At the very least, you have a better chance than I do.

Mariel

Well... It might sound a little sneaky of me to say this when I don't really know what to do either... But instead of us pushing our views on you, I think the final decision about the plant...

Should come from you, Marie. I feel that you should decide. I've thought long and hard about this, and I really think this is the best way.

Marie

Why me?

Mariel

This might be a little off-topic... But up until this point, knowing what you, Ivan, and the children are going through... And seeing the state of this island, it's got me so agitated. I feel as though... I want to save you. I have to save you. That I was led here for a reason, and I need to rescue you all.

Marie

......

Mariel

Although... I was thinking. There's a huge difference... Between wanting to save someone, and forcing salvation upon them.

I guess I've been kind of obsessed with the idea of saving you. I've been blinded by it. I'd been so sure that I'll save you, I'll guide you, I'll protect you... But now, I'm not so sure. The whole notion that I should save you was wrong to begin with.

I don't need to guide you. If you end up being saved, then great. Or rather... That's how it should be. Just like how the children's actions were able to change your mind before.

I mentioned earlier that there was someone who taught me all about the priesthood. Do you remember?

Marie

I remember.

Mariel

In actual fact, she never really talked about the temple doctrines all that much. When I was little, I used to run off and cry whenever training got too much for me. She would always be by my side, comforting me. But always only as a friend. As a priestess, she just stayed with me, until I was able to find the answer from within myself.

That made me so happy. I was still young and immature, but I remember feeling so respected.

So, um... It's a bit hard to explain...

The answer I found, was that I don't wish to be a priestess who leads others.

To me, what's important is... When somebody is lost, to stay by their side. To not let go of their hand till they know where to go next. To listen, not to lead. To keep asking questions, to keep holding their hand. And to respect their decisions. The one who makes the decision should be the one affected. It may come across as really callous and cruel...

But I'll stay with you until you decide. I'll be with you all the way, and I'll share your responsibility. That's my answer to what you asked me before, back in the forest.

Marie

If you reach out to everyone with a pure heart and the deepest of love... Well, how long will it last? How long will you hold on?

Because if you're only saving them temporarily, then leaving the rest to their own regenerative abilities... Is that really saving them? Even if they feel like they've been saved while you hold their hand and smile sweetly at them... What about those who lack the strength to stand after that euphoric moment has passed?

Mariel

Everything I've done so far has been off the mark. I'm not fit to be a priestess right now. You've reminded me the reason why apprentices are apprentices. So...

Marie

Mariel... You're so very earnest. You're earnest and honest.

Mariel

Y-You think?

Marie

Now, do you think we could get back to the point? You've strayed so far from the subject, I can hardly even see it from here.

Mariel

Oh! R-Right! So, um...

I want you to choose. Any decision about the island shouldn't fall to outsiders like us. It should fall to you, the person who actually lives here.

Marie

Basically, you're trying to push the responsibility onto me?

Mariel

What?! N-No! I wasn't trying to...

Marie

I'm joking! My days of criticizing you are over now. Aldo, Nona, do you agree with Mariel?

Nona

Yes, I do. After hearing what Mariel had to say, I think she's right. Obviously, we're here if you want any advice! We can think it through together.

Aldo

Yeah, I agree.

Marie

Very well. I will decide. Hmm. I think... ......

We should leave it there. Leave it as it is.

Aldo

What?! You want to leave it?

Nona

You don't want to do anything? You want to leave it to grow?

Marie

Yes.

Aldo

B-But that's so dangerous.

Mariel

Why do you want to leave it be, Marie?

Marie

Because I found myself agreeing with what you said before. Depriving the children of sight, and taking the life of an unknown being...they are the same sin. In the same vein, the right thing is to keep it close, and to take responsibility for watching over it.

I will leave it as it is, but that doesn't mean I'll leave it alone. I will protect the children. I'll give them the right education, and teach them the dangers of that thing. As a parent, I'll do my best to keep the danger away. But not by locking the doors and covering their eyes. Meanwhile, I will watch over that thing. I will pay attention to it, observe it. I will study it. I will continue my father's records for him. If its existence, if its innate functions as a living thing, are harmful, I will try to prevent that.

This time... I want to see what happens to this creature. Not for revenge. But simply, as a person born on this island.

Mariel

Marie...{lang-nuance}Mariel watching Marie leave.{/lang-nuance}

Marie

As much as it pains me to admit... It's all thanks to you, Mariel.

Mariel

What?! Oh my goodness, no way!

Marie

You see? I shouldn't have said anything. You're so irritating when you're happy!

Mariel

Marie?!

Nona

It may have been Marie who made the decision... But it seems to me like it took the both of you to come to the right answer.

Aldo

Yeah. It's a good decision.

Mariel

Thank you, Marie. Truly.

Marie

How arrogant. Thanking me for something that affects us, not you.

Mariel

O-Oh, um... You're right.

Marie

Honestly. You should probably learn a little more about how to deal with people like me. Never let yourself be swayed by others, or else you'll end up being consumed by bad people.

Mariel

But...I want to face others. I want to look them in the eyes, not shirk away.

Marie

Yes, I know that all too well.

Nona

We may have figured out what we're doing with the plant... But that still doesn't solve the food problem. What are we gonna do about that?

Aldo

Good point. We need to find some way that doesn't involve anybody sacrificing themselves... It'll be slow, but perhaps we should continue on with the field?

Mariel

Oh! I've got it!

Aldo

What is it, Mariel?

Mariel

Marie!

You and me... Let's use a Pure Cradle! A great, big, massive one, covering the whole island!

Marie

What?!

Mariel

I don't know if it'll work or not... But if this power really can remove toxins like you said, then surely it's worth a try? It may be too difficult to do alone, but with two of us here...

Oh.

I guess it won't work.

Marie

What's wrong?

Mariel

I'm so sorry, I totally forgot. If you use your power...

Marie

......

It's fine. Let's do it.

Mariel

But!

Marie

I want to do it.

Whatever damage it does to my body, it's a pain I willingly accept.

I wish to make up for all I've done. So let's do it. Will you respect my decision?

Mariel

Oh...

Yes, I will.

I'm gonna try hard as I can! We will heal your body! If we do this spell together, we can take away the pain!

Oh.

I guess it won't work. I'm so sorry, I totally forgot. If you use your power...

Marie

......

It's fine. Let's do it. I want to do it.

Mariel

But!

Marie

I want to do it.

Whatever damage it does to my body, it's a pain I willingly accept.

I wish to make up for all I've done. So let's do it. Will you respect my decision?

Mariel

Marie...{lang-nuance}Mariel respecting Maries decision.{/lang-nuance}

Yes, I will.

I'm gonna try hard as I can! If using the Pure Cradle brings pain to your body, then I'll heal it!

As a priestess, I'll neither lead you nor not lead you. I'll neither take away your pain nor not do so. But as a friend, I don't want your pain to continue!

Marie

...... Then...

Okay. Thank you, Mariel.

Mariel

You're welcome!

Marie

If that's decided, we should really try it out as soon as possible. Let's go outside atop the tower. We want our light to fall over the whole island.

Nona

Okay, then let's go outside before the sun goes down! We'll watch over you.

Marie

I appreciate it.

Nona

They seem to be getting along now.

Aldo

I know. I'm so glad.

Mariel

It's strange.

I feel like I can accomplish anything right now.

Marie

I think that's all in your head. However...

I do feel like something better than usual is about to happen.

Mariel

Right!

Now then, Marie...

Marie

What will our signal be?

Mariel

Isn't it obvious?

We will look into each other's eyes and feel our hearts resonate.

Marie

Unbelievable. Fine.

Look at me. Really look at me.

Mariel

I will! You too!

Nona

So... How'd it go?

Aldo

Did it work?

Mariel

*huff huff* Ugh... I gave it all I had! How are you, Marie?

Marie

Now don't be cruel. I can't stand yet... Ugh, honestly...

I feel like it worked, and yet it didn't.

Mariel

What do you mean?!

Ugh, so it was all pointless? It was a stupid idea. A stupid, stupid idea.

I'm so sorry, Marie!

Marie

It's fine. But save your strength. Don't speak.

Besides, whatever I said... The plants have clearly changed. I wouldn't expect any dramatic changes immediately.

So I don't think our efforts were in vain. And I'm glad I got to try it with you.

Mariel

Marie...

Oh, I nearly forgot! How are you feeling?

Marie

If I was in pain, I wouldn't have been able to talk this long.

Mariel

Oh!

I'm so glad!

Aldo

Hm? What was that?

I hear voices!

Nona

Let's check it out, Aldo! Hurry!

Aldo

Got it!

Mariel

Um, you two?

Marie

Honestly...

Such a lot of noise your friends make.

Merchant

Oh? There's people! Excuse me, you two! About this island...

Nona

Um, are you traders from the central continent?!

Merchant

W-We are, but how did you...

Aldo

How did you get here? Did you find it on your own?

Merchant

No, we...

We were sailing west from the continent on our usual trade route, when we found ourselves lost at sea. Our compass was broken. I thought we'd wind up adrift at sea...

But then we saw a great, golden light shining beautifully beyond the waves. It looked like an enormous cradle. We were utterly captivated by it. And then...

Nona

You saw their Pure Cradle? That's what brought you here?

Aldo!

Aldo

Nona! History is changing! For the better!

Merchant

Wh-What did you just say?

???

What in the world?

Marie

Never did I think I'd live to see a ship visit this island.

Mariel

Marie, wait! Let me support you!

Merchant

Good heavens!

Two saints!

Mariel

Huh?

Merchant

I may not have magic, but I can tell. You two, cloaked in this pure light... You are pure saints! To think we'd find you on this island engulfed in a cradle of light...

Aldo

So... Are you really okay now?

Marie

Yes, we'll be fine. We can manage the rest by ourselves. Thank you for the field. I know I've said such mean things to you...

Nona

No, it's fine.

Marie

The ship may have arrived, but I'll still come back from time to time to check on that plant. The survey ship will probably be making frequent trips anyway. That said, I will continue to take responsibility for this island.

Aldo

Okay.

Tia

Marieeel...

Nat

Nonaaa!

Serena

Aldo...

Mariel

*sniff* I'm so sad to have to say goodbye!

Nona

Look after yourselves, okay? And be good to Marie!

Aldo

We won't forget you. We had so much fun playing with you.

Verdi

You guys be good, too!

Enoch

Come play with us again sometime!

Nona

We'd love to!

Aldo

Okay... See you around sometime.

Mariel

Marie...

Marie

So long, Mariel. Thank you for coming here. I'm glad we met.

Mariel

Me too! I'll never forget about you, Marie. Or anything we experienced here on this island. I'm so grateful I met you.

Marie

I'm glad. Farewell.

Mariel

Bye!

Amalie

They're all gone.

Liam

Mm...

Marie

Teehee. You look so sleepy, Liam. Let's go back to the clock tower. It's nap time.

Tia

Yay!

Nat

Let's go!

Marie

(Those traders who went to explore the forest won't be back for a while.) (Before they come back...)

Ivan, I'm home.

I was thinking...

...Let's talk. Let's look at one another.

Marie

...Are you leaving?

......

Yes... Me too.

It's warm.

Ivan, your soul... Your outline, your fingertips... They were so very warm.

You can now switch between maps.

76. Scene 76

Dear Marie, I am too cowardly to say this out loud, so I am writing it instead. After spending all this time with you, I've found that I've changed most unexpectedly. Seeing your face, so alive, I couldn't help but draw a line within myself. But I will stop looking away. I've always been so craven, so cowardly. Oh, ignore me. I'm just writing my thoughts as they come to me. If you find this before I get back, just throw it away. For there's nothing more embarrassing... Than being face-to-face after revealing your innermost thoughts. Let's pretend it never happened. I'm looking forward to dinner.

There is a postscript at the bottom of the page, scratched in tiny writing.

And if I don't come back, please live on. As yourself.

It looks like a crumpled sheet of paper. Read it?
