Where Light Does Not Fall
While Aldo gets help from a COA officer during a visit to the Theta District, a shocking incident develops elsewhere...
31 scenes, 1,135 lines
1. Scene 1
44 linesThey can just rebuild huge cities like this?! Man, the future is really something else...
...Do I really hafta run?
Yes. This is a consequence of your decision to play games all night despite having training the next morning. Besides, you only need to run the length of a single match in Battle of Miglance: Multiplayer Edition, Your favorite game, Officer Linaria.
But you KNOW how long one of those matches can go. You're killin' me, Cozmos.
Keep complaining and the cargo bus is likely to leave, without YOU on it. Know that if you are not amenable to my proposal, I will be forced to take action in accordance with COA Drone AI Protocols.
Oh yeah? Then I'll just apply for sick leave under Article 80 of the COA Work Regulations and...
Resistance is futile. We are going to the airport now.
Nooo... I don't wanna! Someone save meee!
Was that...Linaria?
I think I heard her mention the COA. Wonder if that means she's an officer too...
In any case, she was begging for help.
I better go check things out.
Unfavorable conditions detected.
Welp, looks like it's game over for us. So why don't we take the day off and play somethin' else instead?
Hey, everything okay?
Whoa, that you, Aldo? What brings you here?
It looked you were having some trouble, so I came to see if you needed help.
Who're you?
Name's Aldo. It looked you were having some trouble, so I came to see if you needed help.
I appreciate your concern, but we already missed the cargo bus, so there's not much helpin' you can do...
I am searching for alternative routes to Toto Dreamland as skipping your training is inexcusable.
I'm sure Synth Hydra could get you there pretty quick. Want me to ask?
Gathering data on Synth Hydra... It is a new type of battleship created by Synth Humans.
Yeah. He's one of my friends.
Understood. If we take the ship's cruising speed into consideration, we might just make it in time for training. This is likely the best method at the moment and will be added to the list of options.
And what about callin' in sick? That an option?
No, it is not. You now have ten seconds to mentally prepare for training.
Aldo. Could you help us get to Toto Dreamland?
Yeah, I'd be glad to.
I apologize for the belated introduction, but I am Cozmos, a multipurpose drone created by the COA. I have heard about you from Linaria. Would it be possible for you to help us get to Toto Dreamland?
Yeah, I'd be glad to.
I apologize for the belated introduction, but I am Cozmos, a multipurpose drone created by the COA. Aldo. Could you help us get to Toto Dreamland?
In so many words... I'm a total noob, though. Call me Linaria.
Right. Well, we can't have you being late to training. Let's move.
Wow. Lookit the big doll!
Mama... Why's it making such a weird noise?
Sounds like it's ticking...
Ahhhhhh!
Whew, thanks for the lift! Guess I might be on time after all...
It's too early to know for sure. We had best hurry to the meeting place.
Yeah, yeah...
Let's get going, then.
2. Scene 2
26 linesYour movement freedom will be restricted for a while. ยฅ^ Proceed anyway?
So this is the place, huh? Exactly what kinda training are you gonna do here?
If I remember correctly...it's supposed to be a mock battle to simulate an anti-terrorism operation.
That's why they wanted it to be outdoors and in the middle of nowhere.
I get that, but...there's absolutely no one around. Shouldn't your coworkers be here?
Please be on your guard. I detect an unnatural life-form ahead.
...Is someone there?
Oh, why so serious? You can relax, y'know.
This kinda stuff happens all the time durin' trainin'. They do it to catch you off guard.
Safety removed. Officer Linaria, please proceed with caution and check the area for any potential threats.
Wait, what?! Are you for real?!
Linaria, look!
Renri's POV
Are you okay? You're not injured, are you?
I... I'm fine...
You were real brave. You didn't cry at all.
But miss... You're bleeding...
It's just a scrape. I'm just glad you two aren't hurt.
(...So a bomb was planted inside the remotely controlled Toto costume to get at the Xeno Prisma.) (That means the culprit has got to be...)
Th-Thank you so much for saving us!
Don't mention it. But this area is dangerous. You and your son need to get out of here.
Stay close to your mom, okay?
I will! Thanks, miss. You're a hero!
...You won't get away from me.
3. Scene 3
8 linesHold it right there!
H-Help... Please...
Ah!
Are you okay?! Let me see... It looks like you cut your leg on some debris.
I managed to stop the bleeding. Can you stand?
...Thank you. I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't stopped.
Don't mention it. It's dangerous here, though, so you should get away as fast as you can.
I'll bet you thought you could escape into the crowd. Not on my watch!
4. Scene 4
5 lines...They got away.
I should let HQ know what happened...
Uh oh... The call's not going through. Could all this chaos be jamming the lines? I wonder how Cetie's doing.
...No answer. Maybe he's on a case.
That's fine. I'll just do what I can on my own.
5. Scene 5
16 linesI finally made it from my hometown to La Vie En Rose and this happens... I can't believe it...
I know exactly how you feel. I was supposed to be off duty today, eating my weight in dessert over there, but...that's a dream for another day now.
I'll be sure to catch the person who did this so that you can eat your sweets in peace.
Well, now that you mention it...
I saw someone wearing a hood earlier, but couldn't make out their face...
You did?! Which way did they go?!
Toward the abandoned road, opposite of everyone else. I only noticed 'cause it was so weird.
Thank you! You've been a big help.
Cetie's POV
Clock. What's our current location?
We've crossed the outer perimeter and entered Development Sector #7.
It's so dark, I can't see a thing!
There are several large chunks of rubble at your feet. Please watch your step, Cetie.
You sure this is the right place? Maybe you made a mistake, Clock.
Silence, you hunk of junk. The stolen machine definitely emitted a signal from this area.
This must be the thieves' base. Let's search the area for now.
6. Scene 6
4 linesThis place is pretty weird, huh? All the buildings are super beat-up.
Yes. It's different than the stories I've heard. Supposedly the land for Development Sector #7 was completely ready to go. They were just waiting on the signal to build. But that obviously isn't the case.
Did no one notice?
I can't imagine an area this big to be outside of Elzion's surveillance network, at least not normally. Perhaps something worse than we can even imagine is going on here.
7. Scene 7
8 linesClock. Tell me more about the stolen machine.
Lucidium is an armed drone created by the COA's Engineering Department and KMS to maintain public order. It's a next-generation autonomous weapon equipped with multiple rocket launchers, high-output EMP devices, and more. Its power is said to rival that of Xeno- Domain's defensive mechanisms.
I'd hate to fight that thing should worse come to worst.
Furthermore, the military might of the armed organization that stole the drone is currently inestimable... As both the COA and EGPD were providing security when the organization staged a raid on the transport unit and stole the drone.
I know how strong you are, but I do not advise going in alone.
But this mission is top-secret. I don't have backup. Besides, sometimes it's easier to get around alone.
I will fulfill my mission. I'll be counting on you for support, Clock.
And you will have it.
8. Scene 8
93 linesThis place is bigger than I thought. Should we call for backup after all?
It just goes to show who we're dealing with. It's possible any communications will be intercepted.
And I would hate for any reinforcements to give away our position, giving the enemy time to disappear.
Cetie. I'm picking up multiple signals in the area.
I've never seen mechs like these before. Who do they belong to?
Affiliation unknown. I do not recognize the call signal. Given the circumstances, however, it is highly possible they belong to the organization who stole the dro...
Move!
Ahhh!
Cetie!
Are you injured?
I'm...fine.
Buy us some time, you useless piece of scrap!
Say less, my friend!
You need to retreat. Searching for a path... This way!
Linaria's POV
Linaria! Over there!
Hngh...
This is awful...
That's the chief of the COA. I think he was supposed to be our trainer.
Hey! You all right?!
I recognize you... You're Officer Renri's friend...
Yeah. I remember you too. You're her superior.
Who are you?
I'm Aldo. I was escorting a COA officer here when we saw you all on the ground...
What happened here?
Judgin' by the angle of entry, the bullets must've come from above. And it'd be impossible for a guard drone to fire so many bullets of this size...
Have you figured something out?
Yeah, for the most part.
This was an attack by a military-grade aerial combat unit, and an OP one at that.
All the team members' electronics were neutralized, which means they have a high-powered jammer on their side... Meanin' we're dealin' with a pretty big unit. And to top it all off, there ain't a single scrap of the weapon in sight, which means our weapons couldn't make a dent in it.
You got all THAT from just looking at the ground?!
(She's completely different than she was a second ago.)
Looks like it was a one-sided fight. Anythin' to add, Cozmos?
No. My opinion on the matter is nearly identical.
Sharp as always, Officer Linaria.
H-Hey, you shouldn't be moving...
But aren't you a little late for training?
It's, uh...funny you mention that. 'Cause, like, the cargo bus broke down, and...er...
Oh, what's the point in lying? I can tell you overslept. You must've been up all night judging by the bags under your eyes.
You shouldn't be able to see those! I didn't get THAT wrecked...
Your lifestyle needs a total overhaul, Officer.
Ahaha... C'mon, a little mercy for the sprout?
...In any case, where'd that drone go? We can't just let something that dangerous run loose.
Can't say. I'll have HQ look into its whereabouts. I need to notify the Administrator too...
What's going on?
With what?
The COA's line is down. I can't connect to HQ or the Administrator.
What?!
...The attack reached pretty far, then.
That seems to be the case. First things first: we need to get a handle on the current situation.
Urk...
Chief! You're injured. You shouldn't be movin' around so much.
If I can't move much, then...I've got no choice...
Officer Linaria, I need you to go to the Administrator's office. Check on the situation there and deal with it accordingly.
Wait, what?!
You can't be serious. I'm, like, basically a noob and that sounds like an S-rank quest. I don't have nearly enough EXP for that...
(I'm playing the tutorial here and he wants me to skip straight to the boss?! No. Way.)
Look around you, Officer. You're the only one of us who can even move.
And I'll help.
P-Pause!
For what? There's no other choice here.
Y-You might be right, but maybe we should look around first? See if, like, anyone ELSE who might be more qualified is available...
Qualified, huh?
Now that I think about it, you wanted to transfer from being an investigator to an intelligence officer, right?
W-Well, it's more like...I never wanted to be an investigator in the first place? I always wanted to be in intel...
I suppose that makes sense... You received an excellent score on the intelligence test, but failed the physical and mental exams.
So then why did she become an investigator if she failed those tests?
Because she was determined to be compatible with that new prototype.
Is that true?
Yup... Though I guess it's more accurate to say I was automatically registered to be its partner.
I don't really understand it myself, but the fact remains that she's a rare match for this state-of-the-art prototype.
And because of that, we have no choice but to ask her to comply, whether she's "qualified" for the job or not.
But if we're being real here, I don't want this job. I wanna be an intelligence officer!
There's no point in arguing about it.
As I've said before, you're the only one here who can still move, and you've got the COA's new support drone on your side.
You need to handle the situation. That's all there is to it.
But still...
Well, what if I overlooked your tardiness today? And considered finally transferring you to the intel division?
Wha...
(He's not pullin' my leg, is he?!)
(If he really does transfer me, then...maybe it really is worth it.)
...All right. I'll do my best!
Fine work, Officer. Only one so experienced as you would know how to handle personnel like Linaria.
I expect good results from you, too, Cozmos. Show us what you can do.
Understood. I will make sure to give Linaria all the support she needs to complete this mission.
You call draggin' me around "support"?
I am simply trying to improve your physical capabilities. So rather than stand around and complain, I think it best we go and check on the Administrator.
Right. Let's get moving!
9. Scene 9
33 linesOh no... Looks like they got to this place too.
It's gotta be pretty serious for them to make a direct attack.
They're unconscious...
Fortunately, they do not appear to be in critical condition.
And the Admin's nowhere to be seen. Anythin' on the security cams?
All of the most recent footage from inside the room has been deleted by someone.
Maybe we can check what happened with that function of yours. How's your battery lookin'?
I should have no trouble running my standard operations. Please set the target location and approximate time.
The location's here, in the Admin's office. As for the time... Whenever the COA's line went out. That's probably when everything went down. If it were me, that's when I'd strike.
Loading complete. I have estimated the time of the outage. The video can be played at any time via voice command.
What're you gonna do?
Find the Admin, that's what.
But how?
It's quicker to show than tell. Put this on.
What is it?
A device that lets you view AR videos. You won't be able to see anything without it.
Cozmos. Blade mode.
Whoa! Your drone just turn into a sword!
Still so unwieldy... Why'd you hafta be a blade? I would've preferred a gun.
Because, despite how you perform in-game, your real-life aim is terrible.
I, uh...I probably just wasn't feelin' so good that day...
Anyway, let's get to it. Time Piercer, activate.
Hey! There's the Admin!
Heh, that's the beauty of good graphics. Just fyi, that's not really him, it's a hologram.
Cozmos used all the info left in the room to virtually recreate what happened in the Admin's office.
From the looks of things, this is probably right before the Admin left the room.
(This is kinda like when Isuka showed me the Shield of Themis. Come to think of it, that must've been the same COA tech.) This is incredible. So you can use this to figure out what happened, then?
This is incredible. So you can use this to figure out what happened, then?
Not exactly.
As you might expect, it can't recreate things it doesn't know, like the appearance or voices of people with no residual data.
So there's no way to zero in on a criminal when you've got nothin' to go on. It also drains the battery hella quick, so you gotta use it carefully.
Still, it's pretty goated as far as tools go.
Now then, battery's a-wastin', so let's get searchin'.
10. Scene 10
44 linesI wonder where they took him.
Based on the info we just got, we can guess what time they left the office and took the elevator to the Gamma District.
That oughta be enough to make our next move.
What're you gonna do next?
Peek into the city's surveillance system and see which way the Admin went.
Target the Gamma District and fan out from the elevator. Review all the surveillance data you can gather from all businesses in the city.
Understood.
Wow. Cozmos can do all that?
Sure can. It nags like no one's business, but when it comes to functionality, it's a cut above the rest. It's praised as bein' the full package, both brawn and brains, y'know.
And you were chosen by it, which must make you a cut above the rest too.
Nononono, it's nothin' like that...
Cozmos just happened to register me as its owner durin' the test run.
And gettin' myself un-registered is a pretty complicated and time-consumin' process, so I'm basically just holdin' on to it 'til then.
You remember what Chief said, don't you? I failed the aptitude tests for bein' an investigator. But they can't just let their precious prototype go unused, so...I had to make the switch.
You're incredibly good at analyzing things, though, so I can totally get why Cozmos chose you.
Er... Thanks. That's really nice of you to say.
Search concluded. One result found. The video shows the Administrator being taken toward the door to Route 99.
So their base is outside Elzion?
...Well, all right. In that case, let's take a peek into Route 99's cameras...
Search already in progress. Among the results, I have found one live video that requires urgent attention.
It's Renri! And it looks like she's chasing someone.
Cozmos. I need you to trail her as best as you can.
Thank you! You've been a big help.
They can't have gone far.
Got you!
I finally caught up to you.
I want to talk to you about the bombing in the Gamma District. Could you come with me?
...Can I ask you something?
You can ask as many things as you want back at HQ. Now please, put your hands behind your head and...
I purposely let you see me after the explosion, but you prioritized helping others instead of chasing me the whole time. Why is that?
I wouldn't say it was a priority. It's just as much my job to help citizens as it is to capture the bad guys who threaten their peace.
Even if it means letting your suspect get away?
No matter how far a suspects goes, I'll find them, no matter what it takes.
And that's what "justice" means to you? Hah... You think you can have your cake and eat it too, I see.
How dare you laugh at me. You're a terrorist who knows nothing of justice!
That's where you're wrong. And I won't stop until I've gotten revenge on the Topside's system.
What are you talking about?
We're not terrorists. We're a proud organization known as the Rosebuds.
This drone was supposed to be the new symbol of the COA. Let's see if you can stop it with that greedy excuse for "justice" you believe in.
This is bad!
Hey, is that drone what I think it is?
Gathering data... That is Lucidium, the new armed drone recently stolen from the COA. Based on its specs, it is possible this is the same drone that struck down the unit in Dreamland.
Linaria!
...We have to go. Now.
11. Scene 11
8 linesIs this...a town? There's so many people here too.
It does not appear on any of Elzion's maps.
How's that possible? There's no way the quantum computer managing this area missed it.
According to my data, this area is not a town. It has been registered as a vacant lot for development.
It is called Development Sector #7.
I heard it was a devastated area and they were working to remove the rubble.
Yeah. The online news said it was recently completed, though.
Maybe the townspeople can tell us what's going on.
12. Scene 12
13 linesWhat's the matter? All out of ideas?
Renri, we're here to help!
Aldo?!
Huff, huff... I can't...breathe...
I've never seen you before, but judging by that uniform... Are you one of ours?
I...I'm Linaria. A new...investigator... Pleased to make your... You get the picture...
(I can tell she knows what's she doin'. I mean, just look at her!)
I am Officer Linaria's drone, Cozmos.
You got it!
13. Scene 13
63 linesMy sword's not even making a dent!
Likely due to the layers of special alloy in the armor and the surrounding plasma field not mentioned in the design documents.
Meanin' it already had high defense, but now it's buffed to all hell thanks to the spatial armor created by the barrier. Cool.
I have conducted countermeasures, but if the battle draws on, my chip may be affected by its high-powered jammer. I recommend retreat for both investigators and Aldo.
...Retreat it is, then.
You think I'm going to just let you run away?
We're gonna need an opening.
Then we will create one.
If the blade touches the target for long enough, the electromagnetic waves can slightly reduce its processing speed. That should buy us enough time to get away.
Stop yankin' me around, will ya?!
I've never seen anything like this before... It looks more like the drone's in charge.
You should be fleeing now. We will catch up to you shortly.
That sucked! We are SO cooked!
It would have worked if you hadn't pulled back in the middle of the attack.
Hey, this is no time to be fighting!
What do we do now? It's coming this way!
Jump.
WHAT?!
According to the construction blueprints, you should land on the maintenance road, Provided it has not decayed and collapsed.
S-So it's sink or swim, huh?
This is the only way for us to retreat without allowing the target into Elzion.
Incomiiing!
Renri!
JUMP!
I thought I told you to buy us time. What are you doing back so soon?
Well, what'd you expect me to do? I'm no match for them!
......
You okay, Cetie? You're sweating bullets.
Perhaps it's time we called for back...
Not yet. Someone's coming.
Uh oh. Are we in trouble?
...That's a pretty awful wound you got there.
Don't worry, we got you!
You won't lay a hand on him.
Come this way, before the mechs find you.
I didn't sense any ill will in that lady. I think we should follow her.
For once, I agree with this bucket of bolts. It's unwise for us to stay. If there's even the slightest chance she can help, then I say we take it.
...Very well. Let's go.
...That should do it. I've managed to stop the bleeding, but you'll need to take it easy.
I'm sure you must've had a very good reason to come down here from the Topside. Even locals rarely go to that area.
(...I need more information. This may be my best chance to get some.)
...I'm Cetie, an investigator with the COA. I came here looking for a stolen drone and the organization who took it.
You seem like a good person. I'd like to ask for your cooperation.
Might I ask your name?
It's Trellis. I'm a teacher here in Brayk Town.
I see... We've been calling this area Development Sector #7. I assumed it was an empty lot waiting to be redeveloped. I never imagined someone was actually living here.
Of course you did. After all...
This town has been abandoned.
Well, looks like we swam.
Who knew there was a road like this down here?
Let's not celebrate too early 'cause, like...
Presence detected above.
That. Man, I shoulda put more points in stamina...
Run, you two!
Huff, huff... We should be...fine here...RIGHT?!
I wonder if this is an entrance to one of the districts... The elevator is sealed off, though.
There's a door over there. Let's check it out.
14. Scene 14
89 linesThis place is pretty dark compared to the rest of Elzion.
Maybe they don't have any power.
It appears that no public services reach the area. I surmise it is completely off the grid.
Proceed with caution, everyone.
What do you mean "abandoned"?
I mean that it shouldn't exist. It was supposed to be destroyed by a quantum computer.
But I've never heard of such a thing in Elzion's history.
...I see even folk like you don't know the truth.
I apologize for my ignorance.
Please, don't apologize. I didn't mean it like that.
It's just...because of this town's history, there are lots of people who don't take kindly to those from the Topside. I think it's better not to reveal your true identity here.
Do you detest me as well?
...No, not so long as this town remains peaceful.
Hey! What're you guys doing here?!
What's going on outside?
I'll go have a look.
...She certainly wears her emotions on her sleeve. I doubt she's a trained fighter, but...
You came here to destroy our home, didn't you?!
...Sounds like this town is hardly "peaceful."
Hey! What're you guys doing here?!
No way! You're strangers!
We're investigators, actually. We came across this place while on a case and...
Investigators? You mean like...police?
You came here to destroy our home, didn't you?!
What? Who said anything about that?
That's enough! Go back to the classroom before lessons begin.
Those clothes...
It sounds like you recognize them. We're investigators with the COA...
Quiet! You can't just go blurting out that name like that here.
What's all the commotion? Is everything all right?
Cetie?!
Renri?! What're you doing here?
I was careless. It's nothing to get worked up about.
Is he a friend of yours, Renri?
Yes. We entered the agency at the same time, though we're from different sections.
You must be an investigator as well.
Y-Yeah, I'm Linaria. I joined not too long ago. Nice to meet you...
Cetie. Nice to meet you too.
(Urk... This guy ALSO looks like he knows what he's doing. What is it with Renri's class? Not a bumbling NPC in the bunch...)
Looks like you brought Aldo with you too. Don't tell me you swooped in to save the day again.
No, just the opposite. They're the ones who saved me.
I hate to interrupt, but... Perhaps it's best you all talk at my house.
...Yeah, good call. I'd hate to draw any more attention to ourselves.
...It sounds like your training took a sudden turn.
That's an understatement. But...yeah, now I'm the only one left standing 'cause of some good timing.
You forgot to mention the part where you overslept and missed the cargo bus.
Hey! Way to dox your partner!
...In any case, let's go over what we know.
We were looking for the stolen drone, Lucidium, when we arrived in this district.
We encountered mechs that appeared to belong to the enemy. It seemed they had a large number at their disposal.
And they pack one helluva punch!
We ran into a unit that had been attacked during training. After that, we found the Administrator had been kidnapped.
Now that I think about it, the bombing might've been a diversion so they could get their hands on him. I can't believe they'd hurt innocent civilians for that...
Renri...
Bombings, simultaneous attacks on the COA, and a stolen drone. If all that led us here, then...
It is highly likely the Administrator is in this area.
...Say, Cetie. Have you ever heard of the "Rosebuds"?
No... I can't say I have.
The person who stole Lucidium said that's where they were from.
It sounds like the name of an organization, or maybe even a metaphor for something...
There are no records of them in my database. Perhaps they are a new organization.
I apologize for leaving you all here alone. The children have just finished their lessons for the day.
Trellis, tell me something. Have you ever heard of the Rosebuds?
No... I haven't.
They're a group of terrorists that launched an attack on innocent civilians, and they may be hiding here somewhere. If you've seen anyone suspicious or heard of any unusual activity, please let us know.
It wouldn't surprise me if those unsatisfied with Elzion and organizations like the COA are taking extreme action.
......
I get how you two feel, but...I can't imagine that's making it any easier for Trellis.
This is...complicated. You seem like a good person, Trellis. But that doesn't mean everyone here is...
Um... Let's say you did catch those bad people... What would happen to the town? Cetie said there were plans to renovate this area.
Will we be forced to move?
It stands to reason that if people are living somewhere said to be deserted, that the plans will need to be revised. I'm certain the Administrator will understand and will do whatever he can to improve the situation.
We'll even ask him personally to take the most reasonable measures he can.
I want to do whatever I can to help too, now that I know people are living here. That's all the more reason we need to capture the terrorists quickly and save the Administrator.
...I understand.
If there's something you want to know, you should speak to the person written there. We call him the Junker. He deals in everything from provisions to information.
That is all I can do for you, I'm afraid...
This is more than enough. Thank you for your help.
I could tell they weren't lying. This...is for the best.
It appears the Junker lives further into town.
We need to ask him about the Rosebuds, no, the Administrator first.
Right. And finding the Administrator should make it easier for us to find the organization behind all this.
Agreed.
You lead, I follow.
Then it's off to the Junker.
15. Scene 15
24 linesHurry up and tell us where it is!
L-Leave me alone...
Sounds like a fight.
I know you found an android! So hand it over already!
That's enough, you two!
Tch... Let's get outta here.
You're the girl from before.
Ah...
You've met?
Well...I was looking for machine and drone parts. There's lots of 'em there. And I can sell 'em at the market...
Is it true an android fell down there?
Yeah, but it was pretty busted...
It just keeps asking about an administrator...
Could it be the android that went missing from the Administrator's office?
Probably! It oughta have a records function. If we take a look at that, it should give us a clue on the Admin's whereabouts.
Where's that android now?
I can't give it to you... It's mine. I found it.
We just want to see it. Please.
Well...okay. But only 'cause you saved me.
I hid it in the scrap yard.
I think we need to follow this trail for now.
Could you show us the way?
16. Scene 16
32 linesOh no... Where'd it go? I swear I hid it right here...
Then we have no choice but to search for it on our own.
I know how you feel, but this is part of the job.
Highly unlikely. The only footsteps near the entrance prior to our arrival belong to the girl.
If you need a clue, I may be able to assist.
We just used that function, though. Do you have enough battery?
Yes. I was able to return to standard operating capacity via energy harvesting.
You mean this drone has other functions?
Yes. But you'll need to put these on first.
A viewing device? What for?
Cozmos can recreate what happened, but you need the glasses to see it.
Is that so? That's incredible.
I-I must agree... But then what do I do?
Why am I not surprised? You're the laziest piece of scrap I know.
Part of my design was based on Clock's analysis logic. So it is no exaggeration to say that I am who I am thanks to Clock.
There's no need to feel so down. Your time will come, Clock.
Thank you...
Oof. Guess even drones got it rough...
Setting the time to just after the girl left area... Done. Let's go.
So this is how it shows us the past...
Hm? Isn't that...
It's the android... Looks like this happened here, not too long ago.
I see. There used to a small gap that connected to the other side. And the android passed through it. But not long after, the gap was filled, causing this mountain of rubble.
We should find a way to get further in first.
Yeah. Let's split up and start looking.
On it.
Objective: Find the android.
First, find a way to move the rubble as Linaria.
17. Scene 17
17 linesHey. Would you mind if we returned this android to the Administrator's office?
But...
Yeah. The ones we use go out right away, so I can never finish reading my books.
You like reading, do you?
Yeah... My dream is to leave this place and see the outside world. That's why I gotta read all the books I can and study really hard.
...I see.
This is the headlamp I use when going undercover. It has quite a powerful battery and should last you years. Please use it to study to your heart's content.
Are you sure I can keep it?
Yes. Would you be willing to let the android go back home in return?
Thank you. I know your dream will come true.
You're so nice, mister. Thank you for helping me so many times.
The Administrator is being held in the Lost Sector.
But how do we get there?
We need more information. And to get it, we'll need to ask the Junker.
Right. Let's move.
18. Scene 18
61 linesLook. It's them...
Let's get outta here.
I guess they really don't take kindly to strangers around here...
It looks like the Junker isn't here either.
You from the COA, huh? I'm tellin' ya now, raidin' this miserable place is more trouble than it's worth.
Where'd that voice come from?!
The speakers?
As you guessed, we're investigators with the COA. Are you the one they call "the Junker"? We're looking for some information. Maybe you could help us.
Gimme a break. Yer just tryin' to arrest me, aren't ya? Well, I ain't got time fer that. Good luck.
Wait!
Well this side-quest was a bust...
Oh, don't be like that. Come out and give them a hand.
These people saved my life. I know you can hear me, Uncle.
Ya shoulda said so sooner.
So you're the Junker.
She called you "Uncle." Does that mean...
We're related, yes. I'm lookin' after her.
You seemed pretty worried about getting arrested, but came out right away when she asked you.
Course I did. I repay my debts.
In any case, you can rest easy. We didn't come here to arrest you.
...At least not yet, huh.
...We came for information. We heard that's one of your many offerings.
Got that right. I sell everythin' from diapers to fake Citizen IDs.
Fake...IDs?!
Oh, don't gimme that look. Comes with the territory.
...Renri. Priorities.
Ya seem a lot more reasonable than that hardheaded partner o' yers. I'll answer ya one question for free, as thanks for savin' my niece.
Our boss, the Administrator, has been kidnapped. We believe he's being held in the Lost Sector. Could you tell us how to get there?
Hmph... So it's just like the rumors say. The COA's really fallin' apart.
...I can arrest you right now to prove we're still functioning.
The Lost Sector's where the Rosebuds make their base, but I wouldn't go there if I were you. Lotsa dangerous drones about.
Even more than the place that teacher saved yer behind, Blondie.
...So you heard.
I hear everythin' what happens in this town.
Sounds to me like the Rosebuds are an organization. Is that right?
...Don't ya got homework to do, kid? What're ya doin' down here?
Aha... I know I don't look it, but I'm also an investigator...
Well, since ya came all this way, I'll give ya a li'l extra for the road.
It's just like ya said, kid, the Rosebuds are a downright dangerous terrorist organization. But their identities are unknown. No one even knows if they're from these parts. They just sorta appeared.
...And here I thought you knew everything that happens in this town.
Oho. If it's answers ya want, it's gonna cost ya.
What they've done is a criminal offense. As an investigating officer, I need that information.
Look around, "Officer." Yer far outside yer jurisdiction. I needa be smart. One wrong move and it might be my last, y'see.
Down here, we're equals. Ya gotta give somethin' to get somethin'. And that's all the free info you're gettin' outta me.
Aren't you forgettin' something? Cetie asked you how to get to the Lost Sector and you haven't told him yet.
...Hmph. It's simple. Ya need a key card. Gettin' one's the hard part.
And now come the negotiations.
That's fine with me. We need that card. Name your price.
Hey, Cozmos. Does this count as a business expense?
We should be able to negotiate with the accounting department so long as we receive a receipt. The rest is up to them.
I don't want cash. I want cold, hard truths.
Like what?
Like the location of a missin' man.
The young'un in the photo up and disappeared all a sudden. Happens all the time 'round here, but... Not long 'fore he vanished, he came 'n'talked to me. He said...
He created somethin' terrible.
Never told me what, exactly. Not long after, he was gone.
And this picture's the only clue you have?
His house's still around, but I doubt you'll find anythin' helpful in it.
Hmph. So even the authorities can't help on a case like this?
Don't underestimate the COA. We're going to find out what happened. Just you wait.
Let's visit the young man's house first.
19. Scene 19
33 linesSo that's the house of the guy we're looking for, right?
Wait... Trellis?
Oh... It's you guys.
You've been staring at that house for a while now. Did something happen?
No... I was just passing through...
That makes sense. It's not too far from your school.
Would you happen to know this man?
Of course I do. I also know that one day, he just...disappeared.
The Junker asked us to find out what happened to him.
I see... He was like an apprentice to that man.
Do you have any idea where he might've gone?
I can't say I do...
Well, he did say it wasn't uncommon for people to just skip town.
Let's head inside for now.
What should we do?
While I appreciate the offer... Wouldn't it be best for you to keep your distance from us?
Well, if you're sure. We appreciate the help.
In that case, you'll be needing one of these devices, Trellis.
...Looks just like a normal house, doesn't it?
...Yeah. Too normal.
What do you mean?
This place is way too tidy for someone who suddenly went missing, Even if he were some kind of neat freak.
Meaning, it might be staged.
But the Junker didn't know when exactly the man disappeared, so setting an approximate time is gonna be tough...
Maybe I can be of service.
How so?
Scan complete. I have calculated the time period just before the young man vanished. Sending data now.
That's incredible. Thanks, Clock!
Glad to be of service!
I didn't think we'd dig up anything here, but Clock still managed to find us a clue. And I thought Cozmos was supposed to be the superior model.
Why? Did you hear something?
Well, now that we've got an approximate time, let's get to work.
......
20. Scene 20
10 lines...Still, I'll do everything in my power to help. Even if this place isn't supposed to exist.
...I know they're doing everything they can for this town. But I... How long will I let this go on?
Did you get the data I asked for?
...No. I'm afraid not. That new investigator aside, her drone's surveillance is tighter than anticipated...
And that's why you couldn't get the data?
As I mentioned earlier, they don't seem to bear any ill will toward the town...
Your job is to be this town's eyes and tell me everything you see.
That girl and her drone managed to stop Lucidium, even if just for a moment. Irregularities not included in the data must be removed. Now get me all the information you can on Linaria and her drone.
It's not that simple...
Then I'll do it. You hide.
21. Scene 21
22 linesYa don't say...
He made the bombs there. The ones that hurt people in the Gamma District.
That's downright awful. But he wasn't always like that.
What he did was inexcusable, no matter the reason. ...Even if it was his pure desire for justice that drove him to do it.
...Can't argue with that.
In any case, got another request for ya.
And what's that?
I'll get that key card ready. Once I do, I want ya to go to the Lost Sector... And hit 'im real good for me. Just one time's enough.
It's not part of my duties as an investigator, I'm afraid...
But if it's a personal request, I'll consider it.
After all, confronting those who commit crimes is what justice is all about.
Ya have my thanks.
Now, I best get started on that key. Keep yerselves busy. This is gonna take a minute.
Looks like we're on standby.
I'd like to get there as soon as possible, but...not much we can do now.
Why don't we go to Trellis's house? Before we leave, I'd like to know if she has anything to do with the Rosebuds.
She's not in...
If you're looking for my teacher, she left in a hurry. She was supposed to teach me sewing today too...
I wonder why.
Something must've happened. We should split up and find her.
I wonder where she went.
This town is huge, and she could be anywhere. I'll keep looking a little longer.
22. Scene 22
52 linesPhew... Finally some alone time.
Where's a save point when you need one? This quest has been goin' nonstop since morning... First bein' late to training, then gettin' wrapped up in the COA incident... And now I'm workin' with two agents who're WAY too good at their job.
They're out here givin' 300% and for what?
I want to do whatever I can to help too now that I know people are living here.
After all, confronting those who commit crimes is what justice is all about.
Is it 'cause...they have somethin' worth fightin' for?
...What are the orders?
Huh?
(What?!)
No way... My luck stats can't be THIS good! Hey, Cozmos...
Oh, right. We split up...
You want to work separately? Do you plan to slack off once you're out of my sight?
Wh-Whaaat? I would never... It's just, uh, more efficient that way. I'm gonna look for clues, I promise...
I really hope this isn't the universe punishin' me for takin' a breather...
Those two haven't noticed me yet. Which means there's still a chance for a preemptive strike. But can I pull it off?
Linaria?
Ack!
What brings you here?
Oh, uh... I was just takin' a little stroll, as one does...
But I digress! What're you doin' here? Everyone's been lookin' for you.
Ah, well... I had to rush out and get some supplies for my class.
Ohh, I see...
In any case, I see your drone isn't with you.
No. We split up earlier.
Is that so?
Say, Linaria... Could I talk to you for a bit?
Find her?
No luck. I haven't heard anything from Clock or Retro either.
If the City of Dawn is the light, then it stands to reason it has a shadow. I know well that there are people forced to live in places where light does not fall.
Now that I think about it, your home is...
Listen. I probably don't have to tell you this, but... Don't let your personal feelings get in the way of a mission.
Do I strike you as that sort of investigator?
I'm just asking you to be fair in your judgment.
I know I said I wanted to do something for this place, but that doesn't mean I have faith in everyone here. Especially not that woman, Trellis.
I understand. If she's one of the Rosebuds, we can't just look the other way.
But...
She may be one of the many people struggling to reach the light in a dark place like this.
And I want to extend a hand to as many of them as I can.
I feel the same.
And it seems your search came up empty as well. Where could she be?
Apologies, Cetie. But we didn't see her anywhere.
I think Clock was trying to prove something after what happened earlier and said finding Trellis would be nooo problem! You can see how well that turned out!
I'd stop talking if I were you, or else I'll reduce you to a real bucket of bolts.
If a drone with Clock's analytical capabilities cannot find her, we must consider the possibility of her not being in the city. Unless she is in the area Officer Linaria is searching...
Speaking of which, has anyone seen her?
She hasn't gotten in contact with me yet, but there is a high chance she's loafing around somewhere.
Good grief.
We should go find her. We're still on the job.
23. Scene 23
51 linesEr... So, uh...what'd you wanna talk about?
...Say.
...Can I ask you something?
Uh... I mean, I guess? And why do you seem different all of a sudden?
Why did you decide to become an investigator?
I understand Cetie and Renri's reasoning. Those two have a clear purpose, a form of justice they're fighting for.
But I don't feel the same from you.
Well...
I can't help but wonder. After all, you're free to choose how you want to live on the Topside.
You don't have to become an investigator. And even if you do, you can leave that life behind without having to die for it. So why do you go around risking your life like this?
I'm not doing it 'cause I want to...
I see. Then tell me... What is it you're fighting for?
(What I'm...fighting for...)
...Honestly, I don't know. I just joined the COA. Everyone's got their own way of thinkin', but...
Fightin' for "justice" isn't really me.
Oh? I would've thought newcomers to be more idealistic, but you're a strange one.
Maybe I am. On the other hand...I don't really feel like runnin' away either.
And why not?
I guess...there's just somethin' about the people's eyes here.
Like what?
Hard to say. It's kinda like...even though they live in these tough conditions, their eyes are still so honest. Like, they wanna stand on their own two feet. Live in the present. ...They're nothin' like me.
...That's an interesting way of seeing things.
And in that sense... I find your eyes super interesting, Trellis.
There's a crazy fire burnin' in them, but it feels like it could go out at any second. It shows how kind you are, and it's pretty damn cool.
...What?
What is it?
...Who are you really? I've never seen anyone with eyes like yours before.
They're the eyes of someone who truly believes in something. So what is it that you're fightin' for?
I... I'm just an ordinary teacher here in Brayk Town.
I wouldn't be surprised if you were fightin' for this town's future.
...You really are a strange one.
Isn't "fighting for justice" more for officers like you?
H-Hey, wait.
If we're done here, I must be on my way.
Linaria. There you are.
Have you seen Trellis?
Well, here's the thing...
I saw her, so I gave chase. But she got away from me... Sorry. I was kinda tired, so I was just spacin' out for a bit...
......
Well, you've had an eventful day. It may be too much for a rookie to handle. Don't let it get to you. Just make it up next time.
Right. At least we know she's in town now.
Th-Thanks...
In any case, why don't we head back to Trellis's house?
...Good idea.
Did you do it?
...No. I ran into some interference.
It shows how kind you are, and it's pretty damn cool.
...And here I thought I'd left that behind me.
...It's me. ...Yes. We're going through with it. Begin preparations.
24. Scene 24
51 linesOh good, you're back.
...Trellis?
Oh, pardon me. I must be a little tired...
You look pale. Is everything all right?
Yes. I'm sorry for worrying you.
......
We'll be heading for the Lost Sector soon. But we wanted to ask you something before we leave.
It's about what you've been hiding from us. When we first talked you said you knew nothing about the Rosebuds, but...
The truth is, you're one of them, aren't you?
......
If you really are part of a terrorist organization, we'll have to take you in for questioning. That's something we'd rather avoid, so please tell us the truth.
...I see. So the time has come to atone.
Then you admit to your crime?
...Yes. As you all surmised, I am part of that organization.
...How unfortunate. I want you to stay here until we return. Clock, the restraints.
Wait. Please.
Take me with you to the Lost Sector. I used to live there. So I'm confident I can help you. I promise I won't get in your way.
No. You might try to take trick us and...
I want her to come with us. There's something funny about that area's map data. I'm sure Cozmos and Clock already know this, but... It would be better havin' someone who knows the area. Besides...
I don't think she'd try to trick us. Or at least...that's the vibe I'm gettin' right now. What do you think, Cetie?
...Fine. Retro. Clock. I want you both to keep a close eye on her to reduce the risk of any incidents.
...Fine. But you better do what you're told.
Of course...
Is the key card ready?
Yup, as promised. Use it on the elevator in the middle o' town and it should take ya to the Lost Sector.
Just a li'l word of warnin' 'fore ya go.
We know it's dangerous. We'll be careful.
Not that. It's worse, I'm afraid.
How so?
Can't go into detail, but to prepare that card I needed to use a dedicated line that don't pass through Elzion's network, but...
Hold on. Isn't that super difficult? It'd be pretty easy for us, but you'd need some high-spec equipment to pull that off and this town doesn't have much power.
If you even tried, the quantum computer would notice and immediately shut things down.
That ain't a problem. After all, the quantum computer here's been tricked into thinkin' all's well no matter what happens.
That is simply not possible. Although inferior to the world's fastest main quantum computer, the specs of the ones around Elzion are still quite impressive. They are autonomous and semi-permanent fixtures that cannot be tampered with.
Sorry, Linaria, but...I don't really follow.
To put it simply, there are computers all around Elzion that are kinda like children to the Admin's main computer.
But it sounds like the one in charge of this area's been taken over by the Rosebuds. That'd usually not be possible, but if it's true, that means they've got some serious technical prowess on their side.
Could that be the reason our information on Development Sector #7 was incorrect?
Yeah. It was probably a distraction created by the Rosebuds. It probably didn't look like anythin' was wrong with the computer to the higher-ups.
Anyway, here's the problem, One of the lines we were usin's been cut by that quantum computer.
It's just returning to it's normal state, then. Is that a problem?
Yeah. And a big one too.
...I see. There was never supposed to be anything here. And yet an illegal city exists, artificially hidden. If that quantum computer regains its autonomy and the town is revealed, then...
It'll consider us anomalies and get rid of us all.
Is there a way to stop it?
Ain't nothin' we can do, that's for sure. But maybe someone high-n-mighty like that Administrator of yers could help.
It all comes back to him, huh.
That makes things easier.
Yeah. So the sooner we save him, the better.
25. Scene 25
40 linesEverything's run-down here.
These are bullet holes...
Was there a riot here?
This used to be a really big town. The buildings were beautiful, and everyone had electricity. It wasn't quite like the Topside, but you could still live a good life here.
You said the quantum computer destroyed this place. What exactly happened?
I don't know all the details, I'm afraid. But the town leader at the time was trying to negotiate, to get us equal standing with the Topside.
In the end, they never reached an agreement. People started to resent the Topside... I heard an armed resistance formed to stand against them.
And those people...were the Rosebuds?
I imagine the quantum computer wasn't going to let the seeds of rebellion grow.
I don't know what was happening behind closed doors, but... One day, a fight broke out.
The resistance clashed with unmanned combat droids under orders. Things turned violent and, after a long battle, most of the city was destroyed.
That's terrible...
They fought against Elzion for their freedom, but lost.
Are you sure you want to do this? To save a place with a history like that behind it?
Without a doubt.
Everyone has the right to a fair trial. And it should never happen in such a violent and destructive way.
I know that life isn't so simple, even in a town from the future. But I also know that you can't do this alone. And I wanna do whatever I can to help.
Morally speaking, I see no reason for us to refuse.
Thank you... Then let's keep going. We've got a lot of ground to cover...
Is something wrong?
Cozmos... What do you think "justice" is? Everyone's so serious about it, I can't help but wonder.
It is difficult to give a concise answer as there are many different interpretations depending on the intent of the question. Would you like the dictionary definition of the word?
...I'm good. C'mon, let's go.
Just how long do you plan on keeping this up?
Until everything related to the system that destroyed us is gone. The COA is powerless now. Next is the military, and finally...all of Elzion.
Holding me hostage will do nothing to Elzion's systems, let alone the COA.
There's no need to pretend. We have that new drone on our side, and you only have a few pieces left on the board.
It will take far more than what you've done to keep my subordinates down. And besides, you're utterly transparent.
What?
Why have you kept me alive? I was chosen by the main quantum computer. If your goal was to destroy the system, eliminating me should have been your first order of business. I find it a rather inefficient plan for someone who seems otherwise very clever.
How dare you...
Do you plan to use me in negotiations? And would those negotiations have anything to do with Development Sector #7, the town you're trying to hide?
What are you trying to say?
As I'm sure you're aware, there's a trade-off between your battle and the townspeople's safety. Negotiations won't work on any quantum computer. If push comes to shove, it won't hesitate to cut even me off. After that, all it has to do is quietly destroy the town. I shouldn't have to tell you what becomes of its people then.
You must realize this. It's why you've only been surveilling my subordinates and not fighting them. You want to protect the townspeople.
No... You're wrong...
It's clear you're at war with yourself. You want revenge, but not at the price of peace. That's because you care so much more for the people's safety than your own plan's success.
Shut up! What could you possibly understand of my struggle?! I will NEVER forgive anyone or anything responsible for destroying this town! And for that, I...I'm willing to do whatever it takes...
They're heading this way? But why? ...It doesn't matter. I understand. I'll go welcome our visitors. You prepare the toy.
Well now, it seems like I can put a quick end to all this. I'll dispose of your beloved subordinates and every single quantum computer with that precious toy of yours. ...And you get to watch the whole thing go down.
26. Scene 26
71 linesMovement detected ahead. Be on your guard.
It's you!
The leader of the Rosebuds?
Yeah. They attacked us on the abandoned road.
......
You had your instructions. You were supposed to bring them to the designated point.
Damn it. We fell right into their trap!
Wait. Something's not right here.
So why have you brought them here? Is this an act of defiance?
What are you doing?
It's time we put an end to this. Enough with the past, with revenge. We need to focus on the town's future.
Everyone here is trying to save this place! That's what you, what the Rosebuds, are supposed to be fighting for!
You must understand that! After all, I... I'm your...
...Yes.
I think your part in this play is over.
Trellis!
And now it's your turn.
I think not!
Trellis?!
What's going on here?
Who are you?
Iola. The embodiment of everything the Rosebuds stand for.
Even if I told you everything about myself, it wouldn't matter. It all ends here, after all.
What's happening?!
Epicenter not found within the area. For a quake this big, there must be some kind of interference from outside the area.
Someone... Help...
Someone's in trouble!
I'm trapped... I can't move...
...Tch.
Wait!
We need to go after her. But first...
Hang in there, Trellis. We'll save you.
Her vital signs are declining drastically. Combined with the heavy bleeding, I don't think...
Thank you, Linaria. But...it's all right...
You all saw her.
Yeah, you two are identical. Is she your sister, Trellis?
...I'm not Trellis. I'm actually a clone, made by Iola.
A clone?
I've heard rumors about the technology, but never seen it in practice.
And she used you in her terrorist schemes...
She asked me to watch over the town and report everything I saw... I was just a doll... A tool created for that purpose.
But why did she do that to you?
I don't know... I love this town...and it's people... Maybe I've come to feel the way she has...
She's wanted revenge for so long after the town was destroyed... Please...you have to stop her...
She loves this place...more than anyone... She truly is...kind...
......
Trellis?
She's gone...
......
Right. This is no time to be wallowing in sorrow.
Trellis... We'll be back.
Linaria... You okay?
I...I don't get it. Cetie and Renri and Trellis... Why do they just keep fightin'?
Linaria!
Ah...
Pull yourself together!
I know how you feel, but...
We can't just stand still.
We have to keep going for Trellis's sake.
Enough with the past, with revenge. We need to focus on the town's future.
Please...you have to stop her...
......
Aldo is right, Officer Linaria. You must stand firm.
...Sorry. Lost my nerve for a second there.
I'm good to go now, Aldo. Those words were super effective, like a slap to the face.
I'd never do that to you!
You know what I mean.
...Thanks. For not letting me stand still.
So let's move out before we lost sight of those two!
27. Scene 27
41 linesC'mon, give it up already.
Shut up! You're the one who said you didn't wanna lose to that kid and her stupid android.
*sniffle* Waaah! Someone, heeelp!
Are you okay?!
Is she taking them hostage?!
Stop! Get away from them!
Teach...
I'm sorry. But I can't go back with you. I need to talk with these people first.
They don't look scared... I don't think they're her hostages.
Okay... We'll go back then.
Thanks for saving us, Teach.
This building is falling apart. Were those two trapped under the rubble?
The fighting was particularly bad here, as you can probably tell.
...Trellis was tellin' the truth, then. You really are a good person.
...There's nothing more humiliating than being told that by people like you.
Hasn't this gone on long enough? Put your weapon away.
It's my duty to exterminate everything related to the Topside, and that includes you.
It's that drone again!
Careful, Cetie! Our attacks don't work against it.
Clock. Find its weak point.
...I can't. It's jamming my signals...
Use me as an extension of your hardware. My body has been crafted to withstand electronic attacks. When it comes to object analysis, you are the superior model. I know you can do it, Clock.
...Thank you. Commencing scan!
......! Plasma field generator detected inside the head!
So all we need to do is break it!
But it's covered in so much armor...
No. We have the advantage, so long as we know its location.
Officer Linaria. You know what we need to do, yes?
Yeah. No pullin' back this time. We're goin' for the headshot!
Lucidium. Get them!
Activatin' critical hit mode!
Where'd she go?!
Look up!
I can deal with a little muscle ache... So let's finish this!
The plasma field is down!
Now's our chance!
Let's go, Renri!
Don't need to tell me twice!
Aldo, this is it! The final boss!
Yeah. Let's end this!
Skip scene?
28. Scene 28
82 linesStealing Lucidium, commencing a terrorist attack on the Gamma District, and attacking the COA, We now arrest you under suspicion of plotting an insurrection to disrupt Elzion's peace.
In the end...I couldn't become her...
What do you mean "her"?
The real Iola. The one who created the Rosebuds. I'm just using her name. She was a truly wonderful woman, both ambitious and intelligent... But ever since she died in the fight, I've been doing all I can to secure the town's freedom.
That's why you went so far as to create a clone?
...So you heard.
Is that also why you built that town from the ground up?
......
What are you talking about?
When Linaria and I split up to look for Trellis, I began examining the town itself. That was when I discovered that the building materials were quite new.
And here I thought it was just an area that had survived the battle...
That's not all. I have a second hypothesis.
I won't mince words. Trellis isn't the only clone you made, is she?
I suppose if you could use clones to carry out your terrorist activities, you probably wouldn't make just one...
Your drone is quite clever. I was right to be cautious of it.
...You're right. That town is a recreation of one once destroyed. Not just the buildings, but the people as well.
Wait. You mean to say that everyone living there...
Is a clone?!
Ethical considerations aside, it's clear you have quite the attachment to both them and that place.
The cloning technology was originally used to overcome the difference in strength between ourselves and the Topside. But when I began using it to create the town to use as a base...
I began to have doubts. I saw that town and the people who lived there not as tools, but as beings who deserved freedom. And the only one I ended up giving an actual role to was the copy of myself.
Now then, you're free to do whatever you want. You've won, after all.
Take us to the Administrator.
...Understood.
...I have a favor to ask of you all.
I want to go back to where Trellis is. I can't leave her like that.
I'll help.
Me too.
I...have a favor to ask too.
What is it?
I'd like to talk to Iola alone. There's somethin' I really wanna ask her.
But that means you won't have any backup...
I'll be fine. I promise I won't let her get away.
Of course. Thank you. I'll catch up to you right after.
Iola. You were the one I talked to back in Brayk Town, aren't you?
You never answered me. Can you tell me now...what it is you were fightin' for?
I was fighting to protect the world she believed in.
You mean...the original Iola?
So you were willin' to shoot a version of yourself... And sacrifice everything you have for her?
Just who was she?
Someone who truly believed in something.
Are you hopin' to gimme the slip by throwin' my words back at me?
No. It's the honest truth.
I was surprised at just how keen those eyes of yours are. They saw straight through me. Or maybe...you knew someone just like her long ago?
......
...If we're done here, take me to the others.
The Administrator is in the area above. But don't worry. I haven't done anything to him.
Whoa! Another earthquake?!
Iola!
Wait, those uniforms... Are you from the COA?!
Wait. Are you...
The man who lived in that house!
What's going on, Iola? What're you doing with these people?
We can talk later. Right now, I have no choice but to let them proceed.
...No, that's not quite right. The truth is, we've lost.
...I see.
So why did you come here?
The quantum computer woke up and is out of control. It plans to destroy the nuclear reactor above and use the impact to detach the area from the plate...
Sending it crashing to the ground!
What?!
It's just like the Junker said.
We need to hurry. The Administrator is near the reactor.
Not even he could have predicted this horrible turn...
What do I do?
You're the one who created the bombs in Brayk Town, right?
And it was Iola that got you involved with the Rosebuds.
...That's right.
......!
You realize you can't be forgiven for committing such a crime, yes?
Well, I...
You betrayed not only the townspeople, but the Junker as well.
...I'm sorry. How can I make it up to them?
If you feel even the slightest bit of remorse, head back to town right now. And get everyone you possibly can to safety.
She's right. Please, do as she says.
O-Of course. I'm on it!
...A wise choice.
29. Scene 29
21 linesAdministrator! You're all right.
Of course. I knew you would all come for me eventually.
Iola's the one who brought us here, to save you.
I see. Thank you for showing them the way.
Don't thank me. I'm the one who kidnapped you.
That's in the past now. Right now, we have more important things to discuss.
It seems like this entire district is in danger.
Iola! I'm so sorry, but...I'm having trouble evacuating everyone. I've got my hands full just keeping them calm.
...I can imagine. It is a big town.
But still! We've gotta get everyone outta there!
If it were just us, we could probably make it out. But we wouldn't have time to save everyone.
But we can't just abandon them.
...Then there's only one thing we can do.
You don't mean...
...Yes, he does.
Are you sure? It would go against the decision of the quantum computer.
Yes, sir.
...I am truly fortunate to have such incredible officers. Best of luck.
Thank you, sir. We won't let you down.
Y-Yeah... What she said!
All right. Time to head for that reactor. We've gotta save the town!
30. Scene 30
70 linesI'm sorry. Could you repeat what you just said?
Officer Renri, this is the Administrator speaking. Pay attention.
It's all right. This is a very important topic.
All information about Brayk Town and the Rosebuds, that is, Development Sector #7, will be kept secret from the public. That is my condition for halting the redevelopment. Of course, this is also a necessary measure to ensure the current residents can live safely for the time being.
No one will know what happened there aside from us. And no one will know that Brayk Town even exists. Do I understand you correctly, sir?
Yes. It is for the sake of that town, even if only for a moment.
But isn't that just postponing the inevitable?
It's the best we can do given the circumstances. That town is illegal, making everything involving it...complicated.
I want you to understand that even buying time in this situation is a difficult task.
...Of course. This is the best solution at the present time.
To be perfectly honest...I don't agree with everything. But I understand that it's for the good of the town.
Officer Linaria. Have you anything to add?
...What's gonna happen to the quantum computer there?
Long-term maintenance. It'll be a whole new machine once it's done.
That means there will be no entities threatening that town in the near future. However, a replacement system will likely be assigned soon. Meaning, we have to decide what to do with that town before then. However...we intend to do what we can for them.
It sounds like you guys are really looking out for them.
In any case, we managed to avoid an unprecedented crisis thanks to you folks. For that, you have my gratitude.
We were just doing our jobs, sir. And we will continue to do so, with everything we have.
I wholeheartedly agree.
(Oh? Hold on...) (Maybe I can use this to finally get transferred to the intel division!)
So, uh...Chief...
I haven't forgotten about you, Officer Linaria. You might still be wet behind the ears, but you did a great job out there. You should be proud.
Th-Thank you, sir! So about that transfer...
I agree. You did well, Linaria.
Yeah. I'm impressed. At first, I wasn't sure you'd be able to keep up. But you proved me wrong.
I've worked with investigators for a long time, and I can tell... You're going to be a good one.
(Urk... Window of opportunity...closing!)
We look forward to seeing what you can do, Officer.
P-P-Pause! Time out! That isn't what we agreed on!
This isn't...how it's supposed to go...
(Aww man. Talk about an offer I can't refuse...)
...Ahem.
I, uh...look forward to workin' with you all... Yeah...
Good luck, Linaria...
(Why does this feel like a bad ending...)
And in the end...I was questioned at HQ until the sun rose... I'm outta stamina... I need an energy potion...or a night at the inn...
...Ah.
Did you just finish up too?
I'm exhausted. I can't even remember how many times I had to write the same report.
That's to be expected with this sort of...unusual incident.
Haha...
What's so funny?
Oh, uh...nothing! It's just nice knowin' that even "allies of justice" hate paperwork.
Don't tease.
Urk, sorry... Maybe I'm just not thinkin' straight after pullin' an all-nighter...
Haha. It's not easy doing what we do.
......
Hey... Can I ask you something?
What is it that you fight for?
I fight for a world where wrongdoers get the punishment they deserve. A world where no one has to suffer unjustly.
That's the kind of world I want to live in.
I fight for a society where crimes are judged with a fair eye...
Where the innocent are protected and all the evil lurking in the dark is brought to light.
I'm sure you'll find it someday.
That's right. And we just finished a big job, so the timing's perfect.
How about going to La Vie En Rose? They've got some new desserts I've been dying to try.
Works for me. The coffee and tea there are pretty good.
Do you like sweets, Linaria?
Uh, yeah. But are you sure?
Of course. Since we'll be working together from now on, we need to welcome you to the team.
What he said.
Now let's get going. People line up around the block for that place, even at sunrise.
...I guess I could stick it out a little longer.
Hey! What's the hold up?
N-Nothing! Be right there!
Another Dungeon: Home's Lost Atelier has been unlocked.
