1. Scene 1
47 linesYou won't be able to switch maps or edit your party lineup for a while. Proceed with the quest anyway?
It's later than I'd thought. If I don't go to sleep soon, it will only make things worse tomorrow.
Not that today exactly went well. I managed to get my work done, I went home, I ate dinner. I'm not feeling too terrible. But there's always more work. There's always setbacks, and constant criticism.
It's always awful.
I don't want to sleep. If I sleep, then tomorrow will come. No good will come of tomorrow. It will just be another day of pain and frustration.
I wonder what will happen tomorrow. I wonder how it will feel. I do hope nothing happens.
I wish tomorrow wouldn't come.
What the?
This place feels different. But why?
I don't know. Maybe there's been some change in the White Night Time Layer?
Well either way, we have to go!
Are you really okay now?
Honestly, you're such a worrywart, Aldo. I told you, I'm fine!
Looks like you've made a decision. Do you want to continue your adventure?
Of course! I've remembered a few important things. But it's still not enough.
Although, this doesn't mean I'm not scared about what painful truths I'll learn...
If only it was all happy memories.
Yet I still want to know. I have to know. About myself. About Cochlea.
So I'm going, no matter what awaits me. This is my adventure.
Back again, are we?
You know it!
Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed you haven't gotten bored of this whole thing yet.
Yeah... I can't help but wonder how many more times we'll have to keep doing this.
Even so, I want to find out about myself. I don't know enough yet. That's why I've got to keep going!
Right.
Besides, it's kinda fun. Going on all these adventures with Aldo, having all these new experiences. The way I see it, I'm getting new memories in more than one sense!
It's just like you to see it that way, Nona.
Let's go, Aldo!
Okay!
We're here! But where is "here"?
Wow! This place is incredible! It kinda looks like Claude's school, don't you think? Though I don't recognize it. No surprises there, I guess.
It looks like a city in the future.
Do you recognize it?
I think I've been to this era, at least...
It sort of looks like KMS City, but it can't be. That was far bigger than this place. Plus, we would have triggered an alarm when we arrived, which doesn't seem to be happening.
I don't think I know this place.
Then we've got nothing? Sometimes you're so useful, Aldo. Other times, not so much.
A-Are you saying this is my fault?
Right. We need to know where we are, and what's about to happen.
Exactly. The people here may be stuck in a time loop with no tomorrow, just like in all the other worlds.
It's so sad to think about, isn't it? Not having a tomorrow. When there's no tomorrow, you can't ever make any new memories.
I know. That's why we have to do something. Okay, why don't we take a look around town?
There's bound to be someone in that big building over there.
Yeah, you're right!
You will be unable to switch between maps for a while.

3. Scene 3
88 linesWha?!
Wh-What was that?
Phew. I think it's over.
Are you okay?
......! Aldo! Look!
I...I don't... I don't understand... I was out on a business meeting... And now the whole office has gone?
There's definitely no doubt about it. That building's disappeared!
Yes, I remember it! There should have been a huge building right here. But how could it...
So you see it, too? I'm not imagining things?
Huh? Oh, no.
It was right here. The KMS branch office was right here! But it just vanished into thin air! The building, everyone in it... and 10 years of data!
Oh...
Aaargh!
Hey, wait up! We still don't know what's...
After seeing what he's seen, he must be in shock.
So one got away, huh? Shame.
Hey, where'd that voice come from?
Aldo! Over there!
Why is nothing I do ever perfect?
Yakumo? Is that you?
Who are you? Most people never remember my name...
Huh? Don't you recognize me?
You're a bit too familiar for my liking. Not that it matters anymore. It's all over now.
Who are you?
That doesn't matter anymore. It's all over now.
What do you mean, it's all over?
Do you know something about this building?
You made that enormous building vanish into thin air?
I used some spacetime power or something. Even I don't fully understand it myself. I wonder where I sent it off to?
Wait a minute, wait a minute! I'm not entirely following. Are you saying you did this? And it was intentional?!
You knew there were people inside. But you made them all disappear?
Correct.
I used to work there. I knew those inside, to a degree. The whole building shrunk in on itself before it flew off. I doubt anyone survived that.
What's wrong with you? How can you be so casual about this? You used to work in that building? So who are you? Who...
Trust my luck, getting caught by someone this annoying.
I'm Yakumo. I used to work there. I knew those inside, to a degree. The whole building shrunk in on itself before it flew off. I doubt anyone survived that.
Oh no... Then I think we've found our time loop-inducing tragedy.
How can you be so casual about this? You've taken so many lives! How can you...
...... Heh.
Huh?
Hahaha haha!
What's so funny?
Bwahahaha! I'm sorry. That was just too funny. I couldn't help myself. What are you, champions of justice of something?
Whew! It's been a long time since anything's tickled me like that.
This is no laughing matter! Lots of people lost their lives. Don't you care?
Not really. That means they had a life that could be taken from them in the first place. I never had a life to lose. To have something to lose is a luxury I'll never know. They don't know the pain of nothingness. No purpose, no passion, just day after day of emptiness.
And. Well...
Well?
I suppose I also lost something, too. It's been so long, I'd almost forgotten what it feels like to have something taken from you. Yes. As for as I'm concerned, he...
He? What are you talking about? You're the one who did this!
Can't you put it all back to normal? If you could make it all disappear, surely you can just undo it?
Right! It's not too late. If you return things to the way they were and apologize...
Apologize?
I had thought you were simply naive, but it turns out, you're just annoying. This isn't some conjuring trick. I don't know how to undo it. Even if I did, I still wouldn't do it.
But!
Enough! It's people like you who're the problem! You shine so bright, your shadow keeps me in darkness!
Huh?
Perhaps you should find out how it feels to lose everything!
Aldo!
There. I've done what I wanted to do. Haven't I, Kumos?
...ldo! Aldo! Please wake up!
Oh, thank goodness! You passed out when he attacked! I thought you were a gonner for sure! Are you sure you're ready to be standing up? You should probably take it easy...
I'm fine. Sorry for worrying you. I really thought I was dead there! But strangely enough, I feel completely fine. It's almost as if it never happened...
And we're somewhere new. Do you think time has rewound? That would explain why I'm not injured.
Oh, yeah. I think you might be right.
Okay, then let's get out of here. It's already pretty clear what's causing the time loop. If we've gone back in time, then that building should still be there. Let's head there and...
Ooh, a cat! What's it doing here?
What the?!
It looks just like the wormhole you made with Ogre Rancorem! How is this possible?
No! Wait!
I wonder where it leads to.
It's Arat! I can see Arat through there! So was that cat heading for our world?
Why would it do that?
Not a clue. This is all happening too fast.
Oh, a cat! That's...
That's the wormhole cat! So it's here as well, huh?
Do you think it's gone back to Arat?
Looks that way. I wonder why it's doing this.
No clue. It hasn't told us anything.
And we can't go back yet anyway.
No. We have to stop the tragedy that's about to unfold here!
You can now switch between maps.
4. Scene 4
57 linesThis time, we know who's behind the time loop.
Right.
Yakumo made that office building and everyone inside disappear, and then time rewound. We still don't know why he did that...
This Yakumo guy made that office building and everyone inside disappear, and then time rewound. I wonder who he was...
He must've been incredibly powerful, to erase something that big all by himself. It's pretty scary actually.
I don't think we can beat him in a confrontation. I think our best bet is to find a way to stop him without a fight.
He said he'd lost something. Maybe we just need to prevent that from happening?
And he said something about how painful it was to have nothing. Painful enough to do something like that. There must be something pretty big behind this...
Uh-oh...
Aldo, wasn't that...
Yes! That was Yakumo! Though his hair was different, and he seemed a little meeker than before...
We should follow him!
You're right. We have to stop him before he gets to the building!
Excuse me! Wait up, will you?
Huh?! Wh-Who are you? What do you want?
He doesn't seem to recognize me. We must be back in a time before we'd ever met.
Um... I don't really know what I'm supposed to say here.
Just, don't make that building disappear! Go back and rethink your choices!
Wh-What are you...
Nona! You can't just blurt it out like that!
Um, sorry, but I'm in a bit of a rush...
I'm sorry! Let me explain!
Hm. You two seem like trouble. I've never seen you around here before. And why are you dressed like that?
Hmm... He seems very guarded around us. What do we say to him? Where do we start?
Um. We think you might be about to lose something. We want to stop that from happening.
You must be mistaken. I don't have anything to lose.
No, we're not mistaken, and we really do want to help you. If there's somewhere you need to be, can we come with you? We promise not to get in your way.
You want to help...me? But you're outsiders. You won't be allowed in there...
Ugh, I'm getting fed up with all this racket. What's going on out here?
That you, Yakumo? Not like you to be talking with friends.
Oh, um, no... They're not my...
What's that? Speak up, man.
You know, it's great to see that you actually have friends, Yakumo!
But the walls here are old and thin and voices carry through easily. C'mon, you must be smart enough to realize that, Mr. Big Shot. Maybe be a bit more considerate?
......
Yakumo?
What? Nothing to say, huh?
Oh, um... Sorry about the noise! That was us, not him.
Right! We've only just got here, so we didn't realize. We're really sorry if we disturbed you.
Oh? New in town, then? So long as you understand. Try to keep it down in future.
Phew...
Why didn't you answer him? We ended up speaking for you, y'know.
I can't deal with people like him. I just don't want to get involved.
He didn't seem so bad...
Maybe not to you. But please, let me go. I'm late enough as it is. Even though I actually got out of bed on time today...
Wait! Can't we come with you?
Talking...to people? Sure, I guess.
Same. I love talking to people and hearing what they have to say!
I thought so. You look like the types. If you insist on following me, there's something I want you to do. Can you go down to the lower commercial area?
Um, sure... Wait, this isn't some scheme to get away from us, is it?
No, no. That doesn't sound worth the hassle. If you're not interested, then let's just leave it.
Okay then. We'll be waiting downstairs.
They're not just good at talking to people, they actually like it? Tch. I hate people like them. Always shining so bright.
5. Scene 5
10 linesIt seems so different from where we first landed. It's almost like it's a whole other world.
But if Yakumo lives here, then maybe we'll find some kind of clue as to why he did what he did.
Thanks for waiting.
Yakumo! There you are.
Why'd you make us come here separately? We would've been happy to go together.
Tch. Please, stay out of my personal space. It's not in my nature to amble along, acting chummy. I don't know what I'm supposed to say.
Oh, well fair enough. Then... What did you want us to do?
I want you to help with my work. I'm short on manpower. Come to my office. It's just over there.
6. Scene 6
45 linesThis is the KMS temporary office. My workplace.
So this is your office? It's a bit different from that big building we saw before.
Wait, so you've been to the branch office building? I'm still technically affiliated with it, but I'm working out of here for now. I only go there when summoned.
Oh, I see. So what do you do, exactly?
See that tacky-looking doll over there?
Huh? Oh, yeah. I see it. I don't know if I'd call it "tacky." I mean, it's not exactly cute, but...
I think it's cute. I love it!
You have no taste.
Hey! What's wrong with liking it?
That's KMS's mascot.
It is? I didn't realize KMS had a mascot.
No, that's hardly surprising. It only came about relatively recently. My job is to make this little guy known throughout Dust City... To improve the company's image within the city.
They call this the Dynamic Dust City Division. Just saying that dumb name out loud makes me want to throw up. What's "dynamic" about this trash heap? I'm sorry to ask for your help, but honestly. Why would they make someone like me do this?
Actually, I kinda like the name. It's got a nice ring to it.
You really do have no taste.
Why do you keep saying that?! Am I really the only one who likes it?
"Division" implies other members. Is there anyone else here?
Nope, just me. It's ridiculous. But... So long as I stick within budget, I'm allowed to hire part-timers. That's where you come in.
If we split up, maybe we can get everyone in town to like this little dolly.
It doesn't matter how you do it. You can put it in the general store or display it in a restaurant. Just so long as people see the thing.
Got it. Leave this to us.
So what's with this big board? What are all those pictures on it?
What, you've never seen a display screen before? How is that even possible?
Whoa, did you see that?! A load of lines just appeared out of nowhere!
Mine isn't the only division trying to make this mascot popular. This shows our results so far.
Ah. So this line right here is your progress, Yakumo?
Umm... You seem to be a little behind the rest of the pack.
Tch. I know. I tried handing out stickers, but people didn't even look at them. KMS isn't exactly popular in this town.
Well, just leave this to us! Aldo's incredible. He's saved a whole country from peril. We've got this.
Me? I'm just a traveling swordsman.
A traveling swordsman who saved an entire country? What are you, the hero from a fairy tale or something? What does that make you, a princess?
Wha?! How'd you know that?
Teehee. I must truly radiate a majestic air of refinement, too strong to be concealed!
Err, I don't think he meant it like that...
You don't deny it? Perhaps that explains your strange outfits. And what's that? A legendary sword?
Not quite. It's um...a demon sword.
A demon sword? Hahaha! I don't know how you kept a straight face, saying all that. So we've got a hero and a princess. How very impressive. I'm honored to have you in my service.
Okay, first off, go take a look around town. You can't do business if you don't know your way around. Come back once you know the lay of the land. Then I'll give you your stock.
Got it.
It's called Kumos.
Kumos, eh? Okay, I'll remember that.
Okay! Let's get dynamic and do the Dynamic Dust City Division proud!
Please stop using that name.
7. Scene 7
9 linesHaven't seen you around here before. Visitors are a rare thing in these parts. It's a strange name, isn't it? Dust City. It sounds like we live on a trash heap or something.
Yeah, it was a bit mean of whoever named it...
Actually, didn't Yakumo say something similar before?
It's not like we think of ourselves as trash or anything.
But we are a bustling, chaotic town. I guess we are kinda trashy!
Sounds like you're quite fond of this place!
I am. The food's cheap, and there's interesting folks all over. It's not such a bad place. We've got poor folks, students, people working toward their dreams, and people not working at all.
We're not prim and proper like those guys over in Elzion. We have our own way of life here. Make yourselves at home.
Thank you.
8. Scene 8
15 linesSo this is your first time here? It can be easy to get lost in a city of this size. Many struggle to even find their way home at first. It takes some getting used to this building.
Oh no, that sounds scary! We'll have to be extra careful.
Come to think of it, it's strange to think that we're inside right now. This building is absolutely enormous.
Why would anyone build something this big?
Well, it used to be a KMS facility. That's why it's so big.
This used to be KMS?
I think it used to be a complex with both offices and company housing. But then they built a new branch office and moved there, so this place was no longer in use.
That's when Dust City started, when people decided to move themselves into the abandoned building. I heard there used to be some suspicious lab in the basement. I'm too scared to go near it.
Eep. I definitely don't want to go there.
Yeah, don't go there. I heard the old sentry bots still roam the area.
You only need access to the residential district and commercial district to live here. I think the residential area's still used as company housing. The employees lived there.
We met one earlier.
Oh, really? The KMS folk may seem all glamorous and rich, but there are dark rumors surrounding them.
But renters like us aren't really in a position to talk of such things. So long as you don't get hung up on the nitty-gritty, it's not a bad life here. I hope you enjoy your stay.
Thanks!
9. Scene 9
10 linesOh, so you're looking around town?
Yes, we want to see everything there is to see.
I see. Though I wouldn't recommend wandering too far.
No? Why not?
I don't wanna say this too loud, but there's an area here that's run by the Dust Lovers.
The Dust...Lovers?
It's a shadowy organization with interests all over Dust City. Keep out of their way, and they'll keep out of yours. Get in their way, and they will get violent.
That's terrible! And they get away with this?
Sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you. They won't bother you if you're just walking down the street. Security here isn't that bad. But rumor has it, there's a more dangerous area outside of here. A slum. Compared to that, Dust City is way better. Just stay out of strange places, and you'll be fine.
Got it. We'll be careful.
10. Scene 10
10 linesEveryone here is so nice!
I thought this place would be dark and dangerous, but maybe I was wrong. We just have to watch out for these Dust Lover guys.
And we should keep clear of the basement. I don't want to deal with anything scary!
Come to think of it, I wonder how Yakumo is doing. We shouldn't take our eyes off him for too long.
No, you're right. Let's go back. But you know...this Yakumo doesn't really seem like the type to erase a whole building...
Oh?
The Yakumo we just met and the Yakumo who erased that building seem so very different. The Yakumo too scared to talk to his neighbors and the Yakumo who mercilessly attacked me... There's no way they're the same person. Even if they look too similar to be anything else.
Huh. Now that you mention it...
Either way, we should go back. Right now, Yakumo himself is our only clue.
In order to keep an eye on him, we'll have to help with his work.
11. Scene 11
78 linesAnd that concludes my report.
...... Your figures are atrocious. I can't show this to the other branch offices. I'm not vain in my work, but I'm putting my neck on the line with you.
(How am I supposed to compete with the other branches all on my own?) I'm sorry.
I'm not asking for an apology. I just want results. That's why I chose you for this position.
("Chose"? "Forced" would be more accurate.) (Surely he knows that I'm really not suited to this type of work.)
Do you have any objections? I do wish you would engage with your work with a little more zeal.
We're baaack! We just...
Ah! Nona, shh! It looks like he's busy.
Oh, so these must be the two temps you mentioned in your report?
That's us! I'm Nona, and this is Aldo!
How cheerful you are. Perfect for the task at hand.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen you being amicable with your coworkers, Yakumo. You're not the most resourceful of people, so perhaps you should ask someone for advice? In all honestly, I'm very concerned about how things are going.
(How am I supposed to contact colleagues I don't even see in person?)
(I was never taught how to do business in the first place. And yet...)
Yakumo? Are you okay?
There's a woman about your age in another branch, who was just promoted to branch secretary. Doesn't that motivate you? Don't you want to make a success of yourself as she has done?
(Please don't compare me to someone as beautiful and talented as her...)
(That's what I want to say. But I can't find the strength to say it...)
H-Hold on a minute. Yakumo's trying his best. There's no need to speak to him like that.
Our first meeting and already you're voicing your opinion. I admire your assertiveness. But superiors give advice, they don't take it. In any case, I'm glad that there's more of you on the team now. I look forward to your next report.
Phew...
Well he was kinda scary.
Is he someone high up in your company?
You spoke to him like that without even knowing who he was? You're unbelievable.
He's my Branch Chief. So yeah, he's definitely high up. He's the one who sent me to this trash pile of a place.
So he's part of your branch, but he's not here? Does he work in that huge building we saw before?
The branch office? That's right. That's where I used to work, too.
But one thing led to another... And I got sent here, all alone.
Oh, looks like I've got a message. From KMS...
I-I've been accepted?! But they told me I was rejected!
I get to join KMS? I get to be a researcher?
This is incredible. I never thought this would happen to someone like me! Now, I can work. I can live.
You want me to produce and promote a mascot?
We want to raise our visibility in Dust City. It's an important market for our branch. This is vital work.
Oh... Umm... I thought I was hired as a researcher...
Unfortunately, there are no vacancies in the lab. This is the only opening we have.
But... I've never done PR or worked in sales before.
If you can't do it, then there's no job for you here. Conduct field research and create a mascot. We'll provide your housing.
What? You're transferring me? This is all happening so fast...
Now I must get going to my next meeting. Be packed and ready by the end of the week.
No results, again? I hope you can see what a critical situation this is. All that work to get it adopted as the company mascot... And my branch can't even publicize it properly?
(Oh... Why does he have to set the bar so high?)
I expect to see better figures next time. If you do well here, perhaps a research position will open up.
What am I supposed to do now? How am I supposed to get good sales results? That's never going to happen. Besides, even if I was made a researcher now, it's too late. I'm too different from the others.
It would be easier if I just quit. But all the other companies went under. There's nowhere left to transfer to. I hardly have any savings. And I really don't want to move back in with my parents.
If I lose this job, I... I can't go on living!
That's terrible!
Unreasonable transfers are not uncommon. Society is a scary thing.
So that's why you need results? But wouldn't your failure mean the failure of your whole branch office? Your manager would be affected, too. You'd think he'd be willing to help out more.
I don't know about that. He has a lot of connections. Important men like him never end up taking the fall. It's me who'll get fired, not him.
You shouldn't have to struggle through this alone. Isn't there anyone who can help you?
My coworkers just pretend not to notice. No one wants to be singled out by Chief for disobedience. So long as they get to live in peace, they don't care about anything else.
It's Chief. Looks like he just came from another meeting with Yakumo.
He must be amazing, working under Chief at such a young age. Not that it seems to be going well... I almost feel bad for him. From the moment he joined up, he never got to fly under the radar.
Yeah, he probably wishes they never hired him in the first place. But I'm not nearly close enough to him to know if that's true.
I do wish our branch's performance wasn't slipping so badly.
Still, I'm just glad it wasn't me who got sent to Dust City. If you can't get the results, to the surface you go!
It's so scary to think about.
Come on, you're making it sound worse than it is. It's only if you really mess up. We should try to relax more. If you're tired, how about a drink tonight?
I'd love to. I don't know what I'd do without our one-on-one time.
...... He's not resourceful. He's not amicable. He can't talk to people. People don't even like him.
What a waste of space.
Ultimately, it is my fault. This whole thing is unreasonable, but Chief isn't wrong. I can't do my job. I'm not passionate about it. I can't get along with other people, either. He's right about everything. I can't argue with any of it. That's why I'm so angry.
I hate myself.
How could you hate yourself?
Yeah, don't talk like that! That's such a terrible thing to say.
Of course you two would think that way. The Hero and the Princess, always so bright and breezy. It's about time you headed home. I still have work to do.
Really? Isn't there anything we can do to help?
It's office work. It's nothing that you can do. Get some rest and come back here tomorrow. Then we can get to work in earnest.
Got it. See you tomorrow, then.
They're both so...carefree. So forward.
It's been a long time since I've talked so much without feeling afraid. My throat's sore.
It's later than I'd thought. Another late night for me.
Honestly... Why did it have to end up like this? Why couldn't you have been just a little cooler?
What a mistake. The dumb scribble I made for my report ended up being turned into the mascot. There's no way it could ever be popular. And now I'm confined to this dump.
Just look at that face. Another mistake. You're the embodiment of my own incompetence. If I never saw your face again, it would be too soon.
I guess I should go home now.
You will be unable to switch between maps for a while.
12. Scene 12
23 lines......
Okay, looks like we're out of time. That ends today's broadcast. Everyone, I'm so glad you chose to spend this late hour with me. Now, why don't we sign out the usual way? Are you ready? Okay...
Goodniiight!
Tch. All the normals get to go home and watch shows like this.
They're all idiots. Dancing around to this trash.
But I'm an idiot, too. Ugh... I don't feel like eating. I'll just skip dinner tonight. I don't want to sleep... But I'm too tired not to... If I sleep, then tomorrow will...
I wish tomorrow wouldn't come.
I'm so tired... I feel dreadful. Whoever coined the phrase "good morning" must have been out of their mind. There's no such thing as a good morning.
Oh no.
I can't believe I got up on time this morning.
Only because I woke you up! Honestly, Aldo, you're so terrible with mornings!
Oh, it's Yakumo.
Good morning, Yakumo! Did you sleep well?
It's too early to be this excitable. You're going to get on my nerves very quickly. Do you two live around here?
No, we don't have a house in the city, so we're borrowing a vacant room. I guess we do technically live nearby to you, though.
The heck? Can you actually call that a proper living?
Yes, we're doing fine. Thanks for worrying.
Are you off to work, Yakumo? Let's go together.
...... I thought I told you, I don't like walking together. I'll go on ahead.
He's gone. Well, I guess we'd better be off as well.
Right! Let's make this another dynamic day!
You really do like that name...
You can now switch between maps.
13. Scene 13
21 linesSo the work starts in earnest today, right?
And we just need to spread this mascot across Dust City?
Okay! Let's get asking!
Wait, wait, wait. You can't be so sloppy about it. There's procedure to follow.
Oh. That sounds complicated.
It's not really. Just listen.
First, there's the field survey. You should have a general idea of the town by now, so this time, take a look at what shops are available. There will be some places blocked off to you in town...but there are some stores nearby.
Right. We've definitely seen a lot of shops already.
Once you've found the stores, come back here and consider your choice.
You can also see a list on this display screen, so register it here once you've decided. Then I'll know where you've gone as well. Once you've registered, it's go time. Results are recorded automatically, so come back here to check them. The screen can also do other things, like contacting the branch office. But this should be all you need now.
Got it. It's a shame our options are so limited. If only there were more shops around here.
It's dangerous outside the gate. The Dust Lovers lurk around, and you don't want to mess with them. That's why we've blocked ourselves in. This used to be a KMS building, so it's easily done. I was told that I'd only be given the key only if I outperformed one of the other competitors for the job.
I see. So if we get you into fourth place, there will be more places we can visit.
I wouldn't bother thinking that far ahead. I've never improved my results myself, after all. I don't expect this to go well the first time. Just take it easy.
I'm sorry I can't come with you. Though someone like me wouldn't be any help even if I did.
Don't be so harsh on yourself.
But thanks for filling us in!
Why are you thanking me? Of course I'd tell you what to do. There's no point in sending you off to do my work if you don't know what you're doing.
Good luck. I have to do my work outside, as always. Let's meet back here when you're done. And thanks for this.
Okay then!
Clear Aldo and Nona's store partnerships and Dust City subquests to proceed.
14. Scene 14
77 linesUgh, what a day. There was even more trouble than usual. I've never felt so exhausted.
We're back!
Oh, you two. How did it go?
Not bad. It was actually pretty fun.
So carefree. Well, you would be after only one day at work. But you did a great job. I've never done as well as you did today.
Teehee. Is that a compliment?
You don't need to praise us. I'm sure you did your best today as well.
I did my job. Fat lot of good it did me or anyone else. The figures haven't improved much. We haven't overtaken any of the other districts. We're going at a snail's pace here. Just thinking about how much we have left to do...
There's no need to be so negative all the time.
I'm not being negative. I'm being realistic. That's enough for today. Go home. Work again tomorrow.
Got it. See you tomorrow.
Goodnight.
Do you think Yakumo's okay?
I don't know... I don't feel comfortable about taking our eyes off him though.
No, me neither. It's just...he looks like he's really suffering.
Yeah, you're right. I think he's had a rough day today.
He's not much of a talker, and he doesn't really open up much... But I can't see him as a bad person anymore. He was patient with our work, and he even praised us.
At the very least, this Yakumo doesn't seem to be a bad guy.
We have to try and help him.
We can't turn a blind eye to those in need.
They've done so well. It's almost hard to believe it's only been two days since they came. If only I could find a way to tell them how much it means to me.
No, it's no use. It's not my thing.
Well... I did lie to them a little. When I said to them, "I'm not being negative. I'm being realistic."
It wasn't entirely true. Because reality for me is inherently negative. There's no light for me. How much longer do I have to endure this? How many more days like today? What am I supposed to do?
Enough with the sob story already.
Huh? Who said that?
Honestly. I've had enough of sitting here, listening to your whining. First thing I ever see when I open my eyes is you, complaining away. How d'you think I feel?
No. I must be hallucinating. It sounded like the mascot was...
I've only just been given life, and I don't wanna waste it dwelling on your dull problems!
Wh-What the? I-It moved?! What's going on? Who are you?
Who am I? Hey, that hurts! You know my name.
I-I do?
You're always talking about me at work, ain'tcha? C'mon, you got this. What's my name?
Ku... Kumos?
Ding ding ding! I knew you knew it!
But I don't understand. How are you moving?
I don't really know, to be honest. All I know is, I got life just now. Who cares about the details.
Besides! The issue is you, Boss!
Huh? No, I'm not the...
Yeah, yeah. I know. I'm only messing with ya. Don't take everythin' so seriously, bud! Now, what's that you were whining about just now? You don't know what you're supposed to do or somethin'?
Sounds about right. What about it?
Well, I've got an answer for ya! Just do whatever you wanna do! You're alive, aren't you? So live. What's missin' in your life? Drinking? Women? Cigarettes? Gambling? Meat? Fighting? Rock?
What? No, nothing like that.
NOOO! I can't believe this! Why not?!
Ugh, don't you ever shut up? Even if I accept the ridiculousness of you actually being alive, why do you have to be so loud?
I'm loud because I feel the joy of life! I've spent my whole existence till just now being inorganic! Okay, I've decided. I'm gonna accompany you. Being alone doesn't sound like fun. Besides, you're pretty much my parent. I'm your responsibility!
Papa!
What? No! You don't get to just...
I have a feeling you and me are gonna have a great time! And I'm always right, just so you know!
Says the guy who wasn't even alive five minutes ago.
Hahaha! You got me there! Yep, I've got high hopes for you all right!
Now, take me to your home! No saying no! I'll just follow you anyway.
...Nope. I'm still so sleepy.
You're so bad at waking up, Aldo! Maybe I should tickle you like I do with Ogre Rancorem.
Oh, it's Yakumo again.
Huh? What's that?
Hey, you cut that out! Don't go treating me like I'm an object!
Whoa!
Then again...maybe I am an object? I do have a doll's body after all...
Don't pick fights if you don't even know what you're arguing.
My bad! I'm not the type to keep quiet!
Yakumo, what is this?
It's exactly as it looks. The mascot appears to have come to life. I don't know any more than that. He's insanely irritating, but he simply won't leave me alone.
Th-That's incredible! How are you so relaxed about this?
I was freaked out yesterday. But he wouldn't shut up the whole night. In the end, I just accepted it. Come on, let's go. I might be on time today.
Can't wait!
Hmm...
Wow. An object with life! Maybe it's another homunculus like from the Tower Argentauri?
Maybe. But alchemy shouldn't exist in this era... In any case, we'd better get going.
Looks like Yakumo isn't back from work yet.
Clear Aldo and Nona's store partnerships and Dust City subquests to proceed.
Yakumo will be working hard. Let's head to those businesses!
Clear Aldo and Nona's store partnerships and Dust City subquests to proceed.
15. Scene 15
92 linesHold it.
Oh, looks like we've found your hideout.
We ain't gonna let you through. Heheheh.
Who the heck are you guys? Wait...
Looks like you've worked it out for yourself. That makes things easier. There's been a little mouse sneaking around our turf. Thought we'd pay him a visit.
It takes a lotta guts to cross the Dust Lovers! But you musta known we wouldn't leave you alone forever.
......!!
No one wants a mouse scurrying around at their feet. Always best to eliminate the pests.
......
(Oh. So I'm going to die here. Without ever experiencing anything good.) (You know what? I'm fine with this. It's not like my life's ever going to get any better...)
Whoa, whoa, whoa! Wait a minute!
What the?
Why're you tryna kill my buddy? You even brought those big ol' machines out! What is this?
Wh-What the? The doll's...talking?
Is it an android or something? Actually, I don't care. You can both die.
Hahaha! YOU'RE gonna kill ME? That's hilarious.
You're rather full of yourself for a toy. You honestly think you're getting out of this situation?
Yes, I do!
Huh? Kumos, what are you...
Yakumo, are you okay? What's all this commotion?
Behold, my true power! Bestowed upon me when I was given life!
Huh?!
I-It transformed?!
Hahahahaha! POWEEER!
Eep! What was that?!
Tch. Don't just stand there, do something! Tear that thing apart!
Not gonna happen. C'mon, Yakumo. Let's go!
Huh? Me? Don't be absurd. You may have some strange power, but...
You and me, we're connected. I know it. So just do as I do! Don't ya wanna take 'em down a peg?
Cut it out. There's nothing I can...
Darn it! This guy...
Huh?!
What... What just happened? He just annihilated our robot!
Uh-oh! Retreat! Retreat!
Heheheh! They had it comin'!
No way... That was...
That's the power that attacked me before. And his hair...it's the same as it was then, too. Did he get this power from the mascot? But it wasn't with him back then...
What was that? Did I do that?
Well, duh. What, did you have your eyes closed or somethin'?
This must be a dream. I can't believe it. What happened to me?
You got a whole lot cooler, that's what! You should be grateful!
And what's this floating sphere? Is this also your doing?
Oh yeah, I see it. But nah, I know nothing about that.
No? Jeez. Well, at least you're having fun.
Yeah, I am! I'm having a blast! Being given life, it feels like a dream!
I'm glad you're happy.
That's supposed to be my line.
Hm? My chest's all tingly. Like it's resonating... Are you and me kindred spirits or somethin', ghosty?
You are an impertinent one, aren't you? But yes, you are like me, in a sense. I suppose you could say that I am your parent.
Whoa!
You're my parent? But I don't look anythin' like you!
I searched this era for someone to cause the recurrence, but it did not go so well. There was a distinct lack of candidates competent enough to rewrite the future. I dabbled here and there, but all it did was pass the time. I grew bored. And then you came along.
Recurrence? Future? Am I supposed to be following any of this?
You are like an effigy. Your tiny body is filled with the grudges of the one who thought you up. I put my power into you. Enough to give you consciousness, enough to control spacetime.
Grudges? So I'm some kinda evil being or somethin'?
Hah... Grudges? Ah. I understand. Whenever I want to complain, I go to Kumos and vent, after all.
So all of this, even Kumos's power, is just part of your scheme to cause a time loop?
Precisely. Or at least, it was. But I've come today to retrieve that power.
Come again?
No, no, no! You can't do that! I was only born yesterday! You can't just give this power then snatch it away! Were you playin' with me this whole time?
Heheh. Perhaps I was, since I recently discovered a new possibility of sorts.
Aldo. I've got a really bad feeling about this. When we first met Yakumo, he said he'd lost something. What if...
What if he meant Kumos? Then we can't let Phantom do this!
Hm. So you're resisting?
We are! If your actions will lead to the death of everyone in that building, then we have to stop you!
What a nuisance. I just wanted to have some fun, causing a recurrence. I will withdraw for now. But that doesn't mean I won't have my fun.
No! Wait!
Nothing is making any sense anymore. Am I dreaming?
I...I'm still alive? I survived? That was a close one...
At least we managed to thwart Phantom's schemes for the time being, right? I think?
Well, hopefully.
So is it over? This really has been one disaster after the other.
Oh? I'm being contacted. It's...
Tch. It's a summons from the branch office. On to my next disaster, I guess. I'd better get going.
What're you doing? You've got superpowers now! Why're you bothering with work, you loser?
It's an unforgiving world we live in. Powers or not, if I don't go, Chief will tell me off.
Hey, wait!
What is it? You can take charge of the work while I'm gone.
No, it's not about that. Are you going over to that building now? With those powers?
Oh, I see what you're getting at. This might not end well! Why don't you let us come with...
Don't be stupid. You can't get past office security. Remember, if you don't listen to me, then our relationship ends.
Why don't you go do business with the weapons store? You'll do much better than I would. I'll be counting on you.
Got it.
Somethin' troubling you? Not to worry, Yakumo'll have me with him, so just relax!
Urgh, you're coming with me then? Fine. Just try to keep quiet for a change, would you?
See you two later. Come on, let's go to the cargo bus.
They're gone...
I guess we better get to the weapon shop then.
16. Scene 16
85 linesLooks like we won't be successful right away. Let's go back to the office for today.
I wonder how Yakumo's doing. I really hope that preventing the loss of Kumos will be enough to keep him stable.
Same. He may look slightly different, but his personality doesn't seem to have altered. He was definitely acting more hostile when he attacked me.
And he's not doing that crazy laugh yet.
Okay, let's go wait for Yakumo to get back.
Ah, Yakumo. I see you've brought the mascot. I hope this reflects a change in your work attitude?
But...why the change in hair color? Has success gotten to your head?
It just sort of happened. Anyway, why did you want to see me?
How are your new workers getting along? Have you got the numbers?
The numbers? Um... They've only been working one day. They don't have much to show for...
Shame. Things cannot continue as they are.
They can't? What do you...
We've reached a decision. Your department didn't even reach third place this quarter. So... The Dust City division will be sold and cut off from KMS.
S-Sold? What are you...
We can't keep a division that never makes any profit, can we?
What? Who would buy it though? Surely no one would want...
Oh, that's already been decided, don't you worry about that. It really is a shame. I didn't think they'd reach this decision.
But, wait a minute. They couldn't have made that call without you...
(What is going on? How can this be allowed?)
I trusted you, I left you in charge of this job, and this is what happened. Accept it. You will be removed from your post, naturally. You will be transfered to another division.
(You make me work and work, then you take it all away? All my hard work will be for nothing?)
It has been decided that you will be transferred to the Surface Exploration Department, effective immediately.
Th-The surface? It's contaminated...
You'll mainly be doing field work, but you'll also undertake surveys and research. A dream come true, surely? Now you can finally satisfy that intellectual curiosity of yours.
(No... How could they just send me to a contaminated zone? Is this normal? Really?) (I may not be fired, but I'll still be in misery. In fact...this could be even worse than things are now.)
I'll notify you of the detailed procedure later on.
Ugh! Nasty old man. Screw him!
Yakumo?
......
So the rumors are true. They're selling it.
With his performance that poor, it was bound to happen. Still...it's all so sudden.
If they've found a buyer, that will certainly help with the budget. Why would anyone want to buy that department? They must see something I really don't. What was their name again? Dust Lovers or something?
I don't recognize the name. It's just a relief that someone wants it. Shame about Yakumo though. I feel kind of bad about him being sent to the surface.
He always wanted to be in research, so surely it's not so bad? Still, I'll keep my fingers crossed for him.
How did our little plan go?
Without a hitch! I'm sure I'll get that raise now. I couldn't have done it without your advice.
I'm so glad! I's the boss you should be thanking, though.
Well, that was a great meeting. I'm glad we were able to reach a consensus, everyone.
You'll find all the initiative you need right here! Let's get to work!
Yes, we must seize this opportunity. We can't call ourselves a leading company unless we innovate. If I get promoted now, I'll gain the initiative at home, too! My wife and children are sure to agree!
Hahahahaha!
Hey? You all right?
Why did it have to be like this? Everyone seems so happy. Doing their work. Getting results. Making allies. But I failed on all counts. I didn't achieve anything. I have to admit, I have no talent. Given unreasonable request after unreasonable request. Never told anything. Abandoned, called incompetent. And now sent to the surface.
Don't be discouraged. You've got at least one guy in your corner, remember?
Haha. Thanks. But...I can't help it. No matter what I do, it's always in vain. No matter how hard I struggle, my life will never get any better.
I'm just... my back's against the wall. Was there something I could've done differently? Some other choice I could have made?
What was I supposed to do? And what am I supposed to do now?
What're you supposed to do? C'mon, I already told you that.
Just do whatever you wanna do!
Whatever I want to do?
Yep. You hate those guys over there, don't ya?
Yes. I do. In all honesty, I wish I could make them go away.
Then make 'em go away.
Huh?
You forgotten already? You have kickass powers now. So use 'em.
But...if I did that...
What's the problem?
......
Oh. I see now. I thought I couldn't go against them... How was I so wrong? What was I even scared of, all that time? When I could just... With the twitch of a finger, I could...
Heh... Heh...
Hahaha!
Bwahahahaha!
So the future has been decided. Precisely as expected.
When a human is near breaking point, push them a little bit further, and they will act purely on impulse. Common sense no longer holds any meaning. Isn't it wonderful? You finally have a use to someone. You finally get to use what makes you special. No one else could have hit this point as fast and as strongly as you. Only you... Someone as pathetic and small as you.
Someone looks happy. I'm guessing you know what you wanna do?
I do. I'm going to kill them all. Let's do it in front of him. I want to see his face.
What was that? Yakumo? How did you get here? And what is that mascot doing?
I wanted to tell you something. I thought I'd notify you. I've decided to dispose of you.
Dispose? Of me? What are you talking about?
I've decided it's time for you to go. It's time for everyone but me in this branch to go. Yourself included, of course.
Go? It's you who's going, not us.
No, it's you. You're going to leave this whole world behind!
I-Is that a wormhole?!
Well observed. Guess you have to have that kind of knowledge to be in your position. You can't escape this.
What...? This is absurd...
Of all people, you're the one to pass judgment on me?
I am.
This is crazy... I... No... NOOO!!!
I've always wanted to see that look on your face. So long!
Whoa!
Was that an earthquake?
Isn't this a floating island like Elzion? How could there be an earthquake up... Oh no! You don't think...
Yes, I do! I do think!
When we first met Yakumo! There was a huge shockwave when the building disappeared.
I've got a bad feeling about this! Hurry! We can get to the building from the cargo terminal!
17. Scene 17
57 linesOh no...
We were too late.
Come to see my handiwork?
Why, Yakumo? Why? You weren't the type to do something like this, I was sure of it! Why would you...
Haha. No, you're right. I never imagined I'd do something like this, either. But people change. That's normal. Besides, I was never a good person.
But what changed? Did something happen?
Oh, a lot of things have happened. The Dust City division is going to be sold. And I'm being kicked out and sent to live on the contaminated surface.
What?! Oh... People have been so cruel to you. But that's no reason to go and do something like this...
You know, maybe it was just the trigger I needed. I've always wanted to do this. It's not like anything in particular happened to me. No tragic misfortune. No accident, no illness. I never lost anyone special. But then, I never had anyone special to begin with.
Then why would you...
Yes. Why would I suffer so?
Huh?
It's like I'm living in a cage. I'm boxed in on all sides.
C'mon now, Yakumo. Don't get all gloomy now. Not when we've been having so much fun! You did what you wanted, remember? You just gotta go out and enjoy yourself, that's all!
I suppose so. I've broken my cage. That ship has sailed.
Hey, wait! Yakumo!
It looks like time's reversed again. I wonder what happened back there...
He said that the sale of his division was what triggered him. I doubt that was the only cause though. Either way, we know that Yakumo is our culprit. We have to find him again, and fast.
Oh, it's you two.
What's going on? How did I get here? And what are you two doing here?
Yakumo! Did you go through the time loop with us?
But why? In the first time loop, Yakumo reversed like everybody else, with no memory of what he'd done.
Hm? What about me? Careful now, keep looking at me like that and I'm gonna swoon all over you!
I see. It was Phantom who brought Kumos to life. Phantom exists outside the time loop, seeing everything that happens. Maybe Yakumo and Kumos are the same?
Hey. If you know something, don't keep it to yourselves.
No, you're right. We'll tell you everything. Come into our room. I think then you'll understand.
So you came through this hole from another world? And you watch as time reverses itself over and over?
That's right. And if time strays from its intended history, it creates a time loop.
It's unbelievable... But after using that power myself, I can't not believe it.
Yeah, I kinda get it. It makes no sense logically, but it feels right. So that ghosty's the same?
I destroyed the building, yet it's all been restored. I broke my cage, but now I'm back inside.
So tomorrow's never gonna come? That's intense.
Right. So you can't do anything like that again, or else...
No. I have a feeling that I'm going to enjoy playing around with this.
What? You still plan to do something?
You can't! You can't hurt anyone else! You can't take tomorrow from them again!
Just try and stop me. Heheh. The Hero and the Princess, out to save the world again.
We're trying to save you too, Yakumo!
Hahaha! Sorry, but I don't really want to play the hero with you. Saving the world isn't for me, I'm afraid. I don't care enough about anyone in it.
Oh. I just received some work. From the boss I thought I'd erased. Time really has reversed.
Tch. Even the way he writes is infuriating. I suppose I do still need to work. After all, if I don't get to third place, he's going to sell my whole division.
All right. I'll give it a go. You two, do whatever you want.
This is not good. How are we going to stop him?
He said he needed to get to third place, right? If he reaches third place, the Chief won't send the order, and Yakumo won't be called to meet him.
Yeah, that makes sense. So we just have to work even harder to push these mascots? We really can't let Yakumo out of our sights this time...
I know! Why don't we ask someone else to do the work for us? Just like what Yakumo did with us!
Okay, let's follow Yakumo, and look for someone to take on this work. Third place is a long way off.
First, we've got to get to fourth. Yakumo said that would open up new areas to visit.
I was told that I'd only be given the key only if I outperformed one of the other competitors for the job.
I see. So if we get you into fourth place, there will be more places we can visit.
That will give us access to more stores to do business with. There's still hope!
I guess we've just got to do this one step at a time. There's a lot for us to get done...
But we've got to do it!
Let's split up and see what we can do!
Clear the Dust City subquests and raise the Dynamic Dust City Division position to proceed with the story.
18. Scene 18
41 linesClear the Dust City subquests and raise the Dynamic Dust City Division position to proceed with the story.
The Branch Chief isn't answering. I really wanted to tell him that we've reached third place. And I wanted to ask him about his connection with the Dust Lovers...
Maybe he's busy? He is an important guy. Though I would have liked to tell him as soon as possible.
Getting to third place is a huge deal! This means he won't summon Yakumo, or sell the division.
And if Yakumo doesn't erase that building, then the time loop should end there.
We just have to keep this up! We have to protect everyone's tomorrow!
You sound happy.
Yakumo! What are you doing here?
Is there some problem with me being here? I may have super powers, but this office and home are the only places where I can rest.
Right! We don't have infinite strength!
Huh. Well I'm glad you came. We were trying to contact the Branch Chief, but couldn't get through.
Maybe he's out? That's unusual. He hardly ever leaves his office. But if he's not responding, then he can't be in.
Now! Go!
What's going on?! Hey, stop that!
There's more! They just keep coming!
What the heck are those things?
I think you know who we are.
Are they...the Dust Lovers?!
I heard some idiot's been going around, messing with our hustles. And to top it off, he's been messing with our muscles, too. Boss is mighty angry about this.
I really don't care. What you did to me is far worse than what I did to you.
Ah, but I really don't care, either. You've been making trouble for me, and that ends now.
Get 'em!
There! We destroyed the last of them!
Grr! So the reports were true. We can't take 'em head on.
But don't think you'll be able to carry on doing business in this town. You should realize our influence. I'll destroy all the business partners you've been fostering.
What?
You're finished socially. You won't last in this place much longer!
Let's go.
We can't keep living here? That doesn't sound good. If I have to go outside in the rain, I'll get all wet...
More importantly, the other shopkeepers are in danger!
We have to stop them from wreaking havoc on the other stores. We have to fight the Dust Lovers for real.
What a pain. Unless we do something about them, we won't even be able to walk around this city.
Also... They have some kind of relationship with Chief, don't they? So why attack his subordinate? Ugh, it's so annoying not knowing what's going on.
We'll just have to defeat the Dust Lovers together. Then we can clear this whole thing up.
Damn it, fine. I suppose we have a common goal here.
So we need to get to third place!
We're not even fourth yet. If we can raise our position, we'll be given a new card pass to access new areas.
Yakumo said we might find new businesses there.
Clear the Dust City subquests and raise the Dynamic Dust City Division position to proceed with the story.
19. Scene 19
68 linesEveryone in town is in danger. We have to do something about the Dust Lovers.
Yay! Now that the Dust Lovers are gone, our hard-earned results aren't going to drop!
I can't believe we're in third place! You two have really worked hard.
We're not the only ones. Your numbers are included in that as well.
I'm just taking it as it comes. Things are already going better than they've ever gone for me before.
Exactly! It would be great if we could tell the Branch Chief all about this...
But we still can't get through. I really want to ask him about the Dust Lovers.
They said before that he's been spending a lot of time in the basement. Maybe he's there now. Then I guess I'll have to change my plan a little...
Plan? What plan?
It may be a different location, but the basics will stay the same. I'm going to the basement. Then I'm going to kill Chief and turn back time.
......?!
You said that the time loop only takes place if a lot of people die. So I'll sacrifice the whole city.
No... He's not said anything to you this time. There's no need to...
I don't care. The time loop is happening, and that's final.
But, why? Your results are way up, and we defeated the Dust Lovers. If time reverses, all that goes away.
I know. That's what I want. They are just toys, and I want to play with them again and again.
How could you want to repeat that? What does that accomplish?
Nothing. And that's fine by me. I don't need it to. I just don't want these days to end. It scares me too much. Not that I expect you to understand.
You can't do this! Time isn't yours to play around with!
Nona...
I've had amnesia for so long. During that period, time stopped for me. There was nothing.
But adventuring with Aldo, I've made new memories and met new people. It's all been worthwhile. And that's the same for everyone here. Without a tomorrow, they can't make new memories.
Don't take away their right to move forward. Don't take their tomorrow away from them!
Hahaha! Bwahahahaha! You really do shine so bright, Princess.
Tomorrow, tomorrow. You think everything will be fine so long as there's a tomorrow? You don't know what it's like. Having morning come while swamped with work. Longing to see the sun shine through their office windows. You're wrong to think that tomorrow is always good. Don't glorify it.
But... Everyone will...
......
Don't worry, gorgeous. I'll handle him.
Kumos?
Some things can only be communicated by connected souls.
Oh, so YOU'RE going to be the one to stop me?
Yup. You two, d'you mind leaving us to talk?
Sure...
Good luck!
Good. Now that the goody-goodies over there are gone, I can finally speak my mind.
You've changed your tune. You're the one who first suggested I make everyone in the office disappear.
Yeah, I did. I'm not saying that destruction is bad. I don't care about anybody else. So long as it's fun, it's all good. At least, it was.
But I didn't expect to be stuck repeating the same day forever...
What's so bad about it? We can make plenty of fun memories like this, over and over again.
It's never as good after the first time! It's just not as fun. I wanna enjoy this life, now that I have one! That's what I wanna do!
But if I know everything that's gonna happen that day, it sorta loses its appeal, don'tcha know!
Don't you see that? You should be enjoying unseen tomorrows with that power of yours!
Tch, not you too. I can't believe you're on their side.
And don't sass me, newborn. You're only three days old. What would you know?
Really? You're gonna fight me, with all my powers?
You're no better than a baby!
Maybe I am! So let me get my way!
No!
An unseen tomorrow? That's just scary. Haven't you ever fallen asleep, praying for rain to cancel a day out? Haven't you ever wanted to skip work because you were afraid of what people might say to you tomorrow?
All I've ever wanted is for tomorrow not to come!
But that's all in the past! It's different now! You have powers! And you have me! You're not the same guy you were before!
No, everything's still the same! I may have powers, but you can't eat without money. If time keeps going forward with the company destroyed, I'll starve to death!
I know I'm the worst. Really, I do. The only way I've found to live is to kill people and turn back time. I never wanted to be like this. I tried to be normal, but I couldn't do it. If time keeps going forward, I won't be able to survive. My only option is for it to repeat itself.
I'm stuck. I can't escape. I've lived my whole life in this cage!
Guagh! When did you...get so powerful...
That's why, I have to turn back time again and again. Amassing the same small pleasures over and over. That's all there is for me.
I think this is the first time I've ever brawled with someone for real. It's not so bad. Let's do it again in the next loop.
Wait... For all you know, the future could be better than this... But you still don't want a tomorrow?
Kumos!
There was a huge tremor and then we saw Yakumo leave without you! What happened over there?
Sorry. I thought I'd swoop in and save the day, but I really screwed things up. I couldn't stop him. I didn't realize his feelings were so strong...
Where would Yakumo go?
The basement, maybe? He said his target was the Branch Chief. Prepare yourselves. We're going to have to fight him. We can only stop him by force.
Sadly, I know you're right. But by "force," that means...
I don't want to do it either. But we have to fight for everyone's lives, for everyone's tomorrow.
I wish we would have been able to persuade Yakumo. Now that we've failed...
Yeah, I know. I don't wanna be stuck in this time loop either.
Let's get going, before it's too late! Before their tomorrow disappears again!
20. Scene 20
9 linesSo "time layer" as in different worlds. "Force" as in...?
It's technology the KMS of my world was developing. It's all a bit complicated for me... But basically, it's incredibly powerful energy used to create impenetrable walls.
What's something like that even doing here?
We were told that this used to be a KMS facility. Maybe someone was studying it. I didn't think it was in such common use. It was made by someone high up in the company, named Leo.
That makes this Branch Chief guy pretty sus, doesn't it? He's the highest up around here.
Hm. It would make sense for a Branch Chief to know about the time layers, I guess? Maybe this is why he keeps coming down here?
But that's a problem for later. Right now, we need to find Yakumo.
21. Scene 21
36 lines...... It's so quiet. I've heard nothing but noise from those three for days. I'd almost forgotten what quiet sounds like.
We found him! Yakumo!
Oh, it's you.
If you came all this way...then you know. We've parted ways now. I have nothing more to say. From here on in, it's might versus might.
We're ready. We will stop you, even if that means we have to fight you. Is this really the only way though? Are we your enemies?
Even though we may have a different way of thinking...
I don't think you're a bad guy, Yakumo. I really don't.
Even now, you're still stupidly good-natured. So bright and warm. I can't stand it. I never could.
But... I never hated you.
Huh?
Most people like you wouldn't want anything to do with me. You really do shine so bright. You are like a dazzling light.
If you think so well of us, does this really have to end in confrontation?
Your dazzling brightness blinds me. Yeah... you're not like me. I may not hate you, but I do envy you.
What about me? I'm no good guy. We're the same, ain't we?
Kumos... I don't hate you either. In fact, I feel indebted to you. But no, we're not the same. Anyone privileged enough to look forward to tomorrow can be nothing like me.
If you don't hate us, then be with us...
It's shameful, isn't it? Twisted, even. Why would I want to fight? But unfortunately, the answer's not that simple.
Enough. Let's do this.
Once we're done, I'll kill everyone and trigger the time loop. Even if I end you here, nothing will change.
Yakumo!
Nona. You said I'm not a bad guy?
Well, you're wrong. How could I not be, when I let my personal grudges turn violent?
And Aldo, you asked if we were enemies?
But of course we are. I've always felt inferior to people like you, people who are special.
Heroes are my enemy.
...... So, you're back.
Are you going to force me down again?
It was quite the experience, dying. Once upon a time, I thought I wanted to die. I'm glad I didn't.
Please, just listen to us! We came here to tal...
Augh. Don't try to persuade me. You'll only waste both of our times.
There's only one thing on my mind.
This time, I will beat you.
Oh no... We really can't avoid a fight? We'll just have to tell him what we know, while dodging his attacks at the same time!
It's no use. We are incompatible. Heroes are my enemy.
Yakumo left the party.
Skip scene?
22. Scene 22
1 linesLooks like we have no choice but to fight Yakumo again. Let's find something to persuade him.
23. Scene 23
53 linesChief? Why are you bringing up that scumbag now? I won't be impressed if you're going to put a dampener on our fight for some drivel about him.
Just listen to us! D'you happen to know that scumbag's name?
His name? Sure, everyone in the office does...
That's a fake name! The Dust Lovers helped him change it in secret.
What?
If this is some kind of joke, you're taking it too far! We have the same name? Ugh, makes me sick.
Don't you think it's strange? If it's as simple as having the same name, why would he hide it?
Take a look at this. It's a photo of him when he was younger, when he knew the Dust Lovers.
What the? But that's...me. We look too similar for it to be anything else. Do we have some kind of connection? A shared fate?
We don't know the details. But there's no way it's a coincidence.
Then what is it? Why did he choose to send me to Dust City? And try to send me to the surface? Was there some point behind all this? It's not just that I'm useless?
I-I can't believe it! The one who made me live like this was...
Heheh. So you found out? How very amusing.
Who said that?
How are you feeling? Confused? Annoyed? Ah, there is no greater joy than this.
Phantom! What are you up to now?
Oh, nothing in particular. I just wanted to watch your pointless fight from close up.
It's not pointless. We're trying to stop the time loop...
Little bird, it's adorable the way you ignorantly struggle along. In fact, it's so pitiful... Maybe I should put you out of your misery. Even if you stop him, even if you kill him... The recurrence will still take place, only a short while later. It has nothing to do with you.
The time loop has nothing to do with us? But surely you awoke Kumos and gave Yakumo powers in order for time to repeat itself?
Yeah! Even when you came to take my powers, you didn't. So who's behind this time loop?
The time loop has nothing to do with us?
So Yakumo wasn't causing this, something else was? How does that make any sense? Surely you awoke Kumos and gave Yakumo powers in order for time to repeat itself?
Yeah! Even when you came to take my powers, you didn't. So who's behind this time loop?
No, no, no! You can't do that! I was only born yesterday! You can't just give this power then snatch it away! Were you playin' with me this whole time?
Heheh. Perhaps I was, since I recently discovered a new possibility of sorts.
Wait...you mentioned some new possibility before.
Meaning there's someone else who does something to trigger the time loop?
You gave your powers to someone else as well? If that's the case, then...
Looks like you've cracked it. Very well, I might as well confirm. The person who causes the recurrence...
Is named Yakumo.
Heheh. It was worth telling you, just to see that look on your face. Bliss, true bliss.
Phantom!
Haha... Bwahahahaha! HAHAHAHAHA!
Hey, what's gotten into you? You broken or something? Quit laughing already!
But I have to laugh! It's too funny! Was everything that happened all part of his plan? Everything? My suffering, my anger, my becoming a villain? He was manipulating me this whole time?
Yakumo... What are you going to do? Will you destroy everything again and turn back time? If that's Phanton's aim...
......
I still don't want tomorrow to come. That hasn't changed. But... If this time loop is what Phantom and Chief want, then that really makes me mad.
Yakumo!
Kumos, you're the one who tempted me to use this power... And I learned one thing.
You did?
If I take a step forward, there's a chance I can crush those scumbags.
Yeah! You got that right!
I can't stand Chief. I can't stand Phantom, either. I'll bring them to their knees and make them tell me the truth. I'll make them apologize. I'll make them BEG.
As to whether I turn back time... I will only decide that after. And it will be my choice alone to make. That is what I want to do. Though I'm sure you two disagree with me.
No, actually. It works for now. Let's go find the Branch Chief and find out what he's up to. We will stop his time loop. And if by then, you're still not convinced to let tomorrow come, we'll just have to stop you again.
Go ahead and try. Let's go.
Yakumo has returned to the party.
24. Scene 24
40 linesAgh... Darn...it...
I've run out of strength... My body's given up on me...
No...no, damn it... If I lose here...
Yakumo! Stop this! You must know, you've reached your limit! Push yourself any further and you'll only hurt yourself! So please...
He's right, y'know! You can't control that power anymore!
Shut up! You think I don't know that? I can't just afford to give up! If I do, then you stupid champions of justice will win! And I...
Can't...accept...that...
YAKUMO!
Hahah... Guess I failed. I get what's coming to me.
It was the only way. We had to protect everyone and prevent another recurrence...
You idiot. It's your own stubbornness that did this. Are you happy now? You chose this ending for yourself.
I...didn't want tomorrow to come. There was no other way. But...
But?
Our time together...it wasn't so bad.
Ngh!
I got to shout. We made fun of each other. We even brawled. I'd never done any of that before. Being with you, it was the first time...the first ever time... That I maybe looked forward to tomorrow, just a little bit.
Yakumo...
It's just, the tomorrow I wanted was one already set, stuck in a time loop. One I knew. But, I saw a glimmer of light. And so... Much as I hate to say this... I'm grateful... Thank...you...
......
Idiot. Just saying his piece then calling it a day. Never thinking about anyone else. This is why you never had any friends! You idiot. You're so stupid. You're the biggest jerk that's ever existed!
He's not going to wake up, is he?
No. The time loop won't be triggered now. We won't get to redo this.
We were able to save everyone, though. Tomorrow will come to this spacetime. And then...
Huh? What the?
The whole Dust City's shaking!
What's going on? I thought we stopped the time loop!
What's that noise?!
Aldo! Did we just...
Yeah. I think we just went through the time loop. Wait, does this mean that stopping Yakumo wasn't the future this time layer needs?
So the time loop wasn't Yakumo's doing?
I guess not.
Besides, when did we get sent back to? This isn't where we started out in the last time loop.
We're right after that stupid Yakumo headed off to the basement. When the three of us were all in here together. Which means...Yakumo's still alive.
Oh, you're so clever!
Then if we leave Yakumo be, he'll end up killing the Branch Chief. We have to stop him. But if Yakumo's death triggers a time loop, we'll have to find another way to do it.
We'll have to end the fight before his power gets out of control. Which means, we'll have to use something other than force to stop him.
So we need somethin' that'll persuade him to stop?
Right. And if we've been returned to this point, that means there's still something we can do, somewhere.
Either way, we don't have much time. We have to be ready before Yakumo causes the time loop!
Yakumo has returned to the party.
25. Scene 25
64 linesHey there, Yakumo.
Don't. I hate that name. Hearing you call me that makes me want to throw up.
You understand that feeling, don't you, Yakumo?
I do. Much as I hate to recognize that I have anything in common with the likes of you.
You already knew that Yakumo had found out your name, didn't you?
Yes, Phantom filled me in. How embarrassing. Not that it affects our plan.
Yeah, tell us about your plan. Are you going to erase a load of people as well?
Erase? Now why would I do that? My plan is nothing of the sort.
But time's going to reverse again. And that only happens when a load of people die...
So that's the chain reaction it creates? Phantom, he hides things from me. But...that doesn't matter.
I want to open up a hole. A hole that leads to the future. That's what I want to do. It doesn't matter to me what happens here after that.
A hole? You want to create a wormhole? So the Time Layers Force we found...
You know its name? That should have been confidential. Well, it doesn't matter now. I stole KMS' time technology and amassed Time Layers Forces. Now, with the knowledge Phantom gave me, I can finally succeed.
Quit beating around the bush, and tell us what the hole's for!
Stop stalling, and tell us everything. What is your aim? Why do you have the same name as me? Why are you making me your enemy?
Very well. It's not like I'll ever see you again.
Have you ever seen a glowing cat?
A...cat?
Wait. You don't mean...
A long, long time ago...
I was a young man, living in this era.
I was full of frustration. I couldn't accept my own inadequacy.
Then one day, a glowing white cat appeared before me.
It was an unusual creature. It didn't speak, yet I knew it was beckoning me.
Half out of curiosity, half out of desperation, I jumped through the wormhole it created.
I wanted to change. I felt that nothing would ever improve living where I was.
However...my gamble didn't pay off.
The wormhole sent me 30 years into the past.
I didn't know anyone, I had no citizen number, and nowhere to call home.
And then I rolled into Dust City, filled with regret as I quenched my thirst on muddy water. It was a mistake to rely on others to change my life. So I vowed to myself, then and there... I would return to my own era. But this time, with my own power.
Heheh. They say curiosity kills the cat. Yet it was curiosity and a cat that killed me for a time.
So that's why you wanna open up a wormhole? 'cause you wanna get home to your own time?
Yes. I have devoted my whole life to it. I used the Dust Lovers... I faked my identity, I joined KMS, immersed myself in my research, and rose to Branch Chief.
But then... You appeared!
Me? What did I do?!
There before my eyes, was myself, about the same age as when I was sent here. I was shocked when I saw your resume. Everything was the same as me!
What? So you really are...me?
What other possible explanation could there be? And what that means is...
The future I wanted to reach has already caught up with me! Everything I've done this last 30 years. It was all for nothing!
So why were you so mean to me? Was it just resentment?
I couldn't bear to see that face. It's so weak and gloomy and useless. Because I am the way I am, I couldn't accept this situation. Because I am the way I am, I chose to follow that cat. Don't make me look at my own reflection any longer. Don't make me face the reality of myself! I...I hate myself!
Whoa!
T-Try to calm down. This doesn't add up. It's strange. If time has caught up, then why would there be two of you?
And the time you wanted to get to is coming soon? Then...
DON'T!
......?!
Stop it. Just stop it. I know. There shouldn't be two of us. That shouldn't be possible.
The current world is out of sync with the future I know. It's the only way now. There's no turning back.
So stop talking!
Whoa! What is that machine?
Let's get started. I swiped this from the up-aboves. It's strong enough to distort time. With this, I will pave the way to my true tomorrow. I will get back to where I belong.
Whoa! It's kinda like my power, but WAY stronger. I don't think this is gonna be pretty!
We have to stop him. Destroy that thing!
Don't bother. It has the power to transcend time. You're nothing to this machine. I can finally go back to that time. I can finally see her again...
Huh? What did you just say?
I will see her again. I must go back to the future, for her.
I can't die without seeing her again. She has been my guiding light all these years!
Y-Yakumo?
You cannot be serious! There's a "her"? Are you for real? You had someone you were close to? You? And yet I...
Get out of my way. I will get my tomorrow. I will see my beloved again.
Not happening! Your stupid schemes, your accumulated time... I will destroy all of it! Do you hear me? All of it! Everything! Absolutely EVERYTHING! I will crush your tomorrow!
Skip scene?
26. Scene 26
81 linesNo... This can't be happening... 30 years' work... My tomorrow... My future...
We did it! Now...
Your plan is over now!
It's payback time! On your knees with you!
Impressive, both of you. That was even better than I'd expected.
Phantom!
Oh, don't be like that. I'm only here to have some fun.
Phantom! I've been waiting for you! I...I don't have enough power. I cannot achieve my goal like this. You don't want that either, do you?
Ah, so you wish for more power? That would surely cause a recurrence.
But, no.
Oh?
I think it's best I cut you off now. Allow me to tell you the truth.
The truth?
Wait! No! Don't say it. Please!
You were called here from another world.
From the same time layer as that young man.
M-Me? He's from my time layer?
You should have been sent back to the same era. Unfortunately for you though, I found it.
While I knew of the strange, glowing cat, I didn't realize it was bringing unwanted visitors to the time layer. I made a little tweak to the wormhole, changing where and when it would send you.
A strange cat has been wandering around, bringing unwanted visitors to the time layers. I made a little tweak to the wormhole, changing where and when it would send you.
Then you got yourself all upset and started that bizarre experiment. It was oddly entertaining, so I was happy to give you a little advice.
As a result, the possibility of your recurrence appeared in history. Your experiment puts an unendurable strain on the White Night Time Layer, thus triggering the recurrence.
All his hard work this last 30 years, it was all part of your...
It was most enjoyable. Allow me to express my gratitude for the quality entertainment. However, your experiment was entirely in vain. It will not lead to the future you so desperately desire.
No!
That device cannot cross the time layers.
Oh... I had briefly considered this possibility. But if there's even the slightest chance... That I can see her again...
Wait! What are you doing?
Move! MOVE! Do something! Anything! No need to control the destination! Just open the gate!
Don't! If you open a wormhole, it will cause another time loop!
No, little bird. It won't lead to a recurrence. He is not strong enough.
So you're running away? I still don't get this.
I just...don't care anymore. Nothing matters now. I've lived my whole life with my back against the wall.
Heheh. This has been most enjoyable.
What exactly has been so enjoyable about this? Manipulating people? Making them dance to your tune? Driving them to despair? This won't lead to a time loop. There's nothing in this for you. So why...
Why would you leap to such a conclusion? That Yakumo may not bring about the recurrence...
I still have this Yakumo.
What?
Hey, you leave my Yakumo alone! What're you gonna make him do?
Oh, nothing much. I just need him to achieve what he set out to do. To turn back time and ensure tomorrow never comes. Isn't that right?
Darn it, he's right. Yakumo said he'd only decide after we stopped the Branch Chief...
Oh no! I thought we'd finally put an end to this!
Don't hesitate now. If you destroy this city, tomorrow will never come.
......
You can play around in the same day over and over again. We can have some fun, you and I. You can get everything you wish for.
Be quiet!
What?! How...could...you... Have you forgotten...who gave you your power...
Yakumo...
I guess he chose not to have another time loop? I don't really know what he's thinking...
Aldo! Look!
It's another of those things Phantom always gives you! Maybe it will show you another memory?
Only one way to find out!
Wormhole expansion confirmed. The upstream squad is returning.
The power drain is immense... It has to work this time. If not, we don't have much more to give.
We've done everything we can. Hurry with the timepoint analysis, please. It's all we've got.
Right away!
This is... None of the sampled timepoints have changed. It appears there's a corrective force in play here.
Let me see...
...Some kind of outside will is involved here. That's the only way I can explain this. No matter how we attempt to modify time, probability, even physical laws... It always corrects back to this future.
But didn't the records say that humanity once interacted extensively with their own history?
Conditions may be different for us. Or, something may be interfering with our attempts to change history... There's something in play here. A form of...temporal homeostasis. Every change resolves back to neutral.
Does that mean we can't actually enact any lasting changes?
...After all the trials we've done, with nothing to show for it, we may have to finally accept it.
But...!
Just when we thought we'd found a way to correct the mistakes of mankind's history...
This planet, it's sick. It's infected with mankind's hubris, the hideous byproducts of our civilization. But does that mean we don't deserve even a glimpse of hope?! Is it already too late even for a glimmer...?!
......
Wh-What was that?
Nona! Did you find anything out?
I don't know. I saw a light I've never seen before. It was different from the one in Cochlea.
Really? Show it to me later when we get back to Arat.
That depends on Yakumo. We'll still have to stop him if he tries anything funny.
So, whatcha thinking, Yakumo? You've been mighty quiet there. How's it feel, doing away with Phantom like that? Pretty good, I'll bet?
I don't know. I don't know why he irritated me so much in that moment.
He didn't say anything out of the ordinary. I did want the time loop. And yet... I hated Chief, but I don't feel relieved now that he's gone. I don't understand my own emotions.
Sounds complicated. You're not as simple as you look, huh.
I'd like to get my thoughts together. I'm going back to the office to think about things.
I understand. We'll come with you. If you try to destroy the city, we will do everything in our power to stop you. But until you come to that decision, we're not enemies. Are you okay with that?
I'm okay with that.
27. Scene 27
51 linesIt's nighttime. If I leave things be, it will soon be dawn. Tomorrow will come.
Well, it's your right to choose whether or not it does. Get you, all important!
Having the right doesn't make me important. All there is here is violence and emotion.
And...what're the emotions?
It's looking like he still wants another time loop.
It's starting to shift inside me. I had thought that if I kept living through the same day on repeat, then I wouldn't need to fear tomorrow. This time loop was completely different from the last though. It's unpredictable. And even Chief, someone sent to the past who knew all about the future, met with a fate that cruel. I'm still afraid of tomorrow. I don't know what to choose anymore.
There's no right answer. There's no path I can accept. I don't know what to do.
Oh, so that's the trouble.
Did you think of something?
Yup. I know the right answer. You wanna know what to do? How many times do I have to keep telling you? Just do what you want.
But what I'm trying to tell you, is I don't KNOW what I want. Do I want to turn back time or not? I just don't know.
You're getting caught up in the small stuff. What d'you wanna do? Destroy? Or not destroy? When it comes down to it, what you wanna do...is the same as me.
I wanna enjoy this life, now that I have one! That's what I wanna do!
You want me to enjoy life?
Yup. Think about it. Isn't that what the ghosty said? That my life came from all the grudges stored in this li'l body. And who's the one who put all those feelings in me in the first place?
Well...
It's you, Papa! How many times have you complained about not knowing what to do next? Why d'you think you keep asking yourself that?
Well... Because I wanted to do something. About my job. About my life. About myself. Every day was terrible, but it had become the norm. I wanted to change it...even just a little.
Oh?
What is it?
I...think I see now. I didn't give up. I wanted a better life.
And those feelings poured into you... and gave you life.
There you go! I knew you'd get it eventually! You thought you only saw the negative, but you didn't. There was a glimmer of optimism in there. My existence is proof of that!
So think simple. There's only one way you can be satisfied.
You've gotta make yourself happy!
Oh!
Yakumo?
I finally understand. I've been lying to myself this whole time. It was a lie that there was nothing I wanted to do. It was a lie that I should crush those scumbags.
And it was a lie that I didn't want tomorrow to come.
Exactly. So tell us. What d'you really want?
See, that's a great answer!
Yes! That makes perfect sense. Don't reject tomorrow, work to make it better!
Easier said than done, though. This is pure idealism. I don't know how to make it actually happen. Some days, I'm so tired, I don't even have the energy to try to be happy.
It's just, I remembered... I'd been ignoring my desire to be happy. I'd been acting like I didn't even want it.
Okay, and you can't look forward to tomorrow if tomorrow never comes, can you?
Tch. You've got me there. Okay. Let's see in the new day.
I'm so glad to hear you say that! Now tomorrow can come to this spacetime!
Everyone in this city gets their tomorrow. As do you, Yakumo.
Honestly... Life is such a hassle. After all that's happened, I'm still just me. Work hasn't changed. My personality hasn't changed.
Still, I have no choice but to live like this. Caged within the iron fence that is myself. If I'm going to enjoy this life...
I'll have to keep searching for happiness within this cage.
Whew! Home safe and sound. Now we can chill and wait for tomorrow to come.
You're in a good mood. I'm still not looking forward to tomorrow. I'm still scared of it.
Everything's gonna be fine! You've realized you actually wanna be happy, and that's half the battle. Plus, you now have me with you!
Why are you acting like my roommate all of a sudden? Ugh. What have I gotten myself into?
I'm exhausted. I want to sleep. But...
But?
Let's go get something to eat. If I don't replenish my energy, I'll collapse before tomorrow even comes.
Let's do it!
28. Scene 28
24 linesWait.
Oh, my beauty! I knew you couldn't resist me!
Now is really not the time for this, Kumos...
Tch. Oh, it's just you. I was looking for the other guy.
You mean Yakumo? I thought you wanted nothing to do with him.
I didn't. But that all changed when I heard his name.
His name?
Fine, I might as well tell you. Yakumo...
Is the Branch Chief's name.
Huh?
I told you that the Dust Lovers used to look out for him, didn't I? Well, one of the things we did was to help him register under a different name. His original name was Yakumo.
That's...odd. Could it just be a coincidence?
It would be great if it was. Look at this though.
Is that...a photo?
That's Yakumo. I'd recognize that plain ol' mug of his anywhere. Looks kinda faded for a recent photo...
It's a photo of the Branch Chief, when he was younger.
......?!
It's the same face. They don't just look similar, they look identical!
I have no idea what any of this means. I just don't appreciate how the Branch Chief's been acting lately.
Take the photo. Maybe it will come in handy. Shut him up for me, will you?
So what d'ya think?
We don't know how Yakumo will react when he sees this.
Still, it must change something. We have to tell him about this.
I agree. Let's take this with us and stop Yakumo!
29. Scene 29
76 linesYou can't proceed without Nona.
Huh?
Hm?
Aldo, look! That rift!
It's a distortion in spacetime, like we saw before. Don't these appear when the White Night Time Layer tries to preserve its history?
So there could be another possible history we haven't seen yet through here?
All right! Let's get Ogre Rancorem to slash through it like before!
Ogre Rancoreeem! What'll it be today? Should I shout? Or should I whisper?
Look! Something's not right here.
You're right. It looks a little like a wormhole...
Suspicious. I think there's something through here! I can smell it!
Hey, Aldo! Why don't you try to sever it using Ogre Rancorem?
Huh? Don't you know how dangerous that is?
PLEEEAAASE? I want to know if something's there! All you've gotta do is give it a teeny, tiny cut with the tip of your sword there!
A-Are you okay? What was with those sparks?
I'm fine. But maybe don't touch it.
It's Yakumo! And Kumos.
And is that...the Branch Chief?
They vanished...
So this means...this future we just saw could be possible?
If it's anything like the last time, then yes.
Then what was that future we just saw? The Branch Chief remained in this world? He wasn't swallowed up by the wormhole?
And...Yakumo was laughing. But not that manic laugh like before. I've never seen him laugh so... normally.
No. What in the world could happen for him to seem so relaxed around the Branch Chief?
Come on. Let's go to Arat.
Right. If it works like last time, we can use an energy fragment from the monster to widen the rift.
Yeah. The vortex has enough power to affect the world around it. So if we look around Arat, we might be able to find something.
Exactly!
Given everything that's happened, I'm not convinced that the Branch Chief is exactly a good guy...
Still, no one should have to end up like he did. And if there's a future where Yakumo can laugh like that, then we should find a way to make it happen.
What was that?
The Branch Chief was with Yakumo. But I thought he'd disappeared? And Yakumo was laughing. I've never seen him laugh so naturally before.
It was too clear to be an illusion. It really looked like they existed in this world.
Oh? What if...
What is it? Have you worked something out?
No. It's just that I saw something similar before, in Elzion. The townspeople were there, and then they weren't. They disappeared, surrounded by a light... Within a moment, it had turned into a ghost town, as if no one had ever been there at all.
My gosh, that's so sad! That's such a terrible thing to go through! So, uh, what caused it?
Hmm... Well, the past changed, which caused the future to change and be rewritten before my eyes. It went from the future I was originally in, to a new future that had been changed in the past.
Rewritten? So why would Yakumo and the Branch Chief appear and then disappear?
I don't know. But perhaps... In addition to this "present" where we are now, there's another "present" in which the Branch Chief stays here?
What?! So what we just saw was another possibility?
Yes. But since they vanished straight away, I don't think this is a case of rewritten history like in Elzion. I think it's more likely one of many overlapping possibilities happened to flicker before us for a moment.
Oh...
Then why did we see it? It happened when you were trying to cut that rift with Ogre Rancorem, right?
Right. So maybe we should try to work out why that rift appeared there in the first place?
If it was the makings of a wormhole, then there must be a key connecting to that future we saw through there. So maybe we saw what we saw because we interfered?
The question is, why did it appear now?
When you went through wormholes before, you always ended up saving people, right? So maybe someone in need of help opened this up?
So it's to save them? Things didn't end up well for the Branch Chief. I can see why he would want to be saved. But I still can't imagine the Branch Chief having that kind of pow...
Wait. What if it's not limited to people?
What do you mean? Like, machines? Or Phantom?
No, the time layer itself!
Oh! Actually, yeah... The White Night Time Layer must be pretty powerful, given the lengths it went to trying to preserve history.
Maybe the version of history in which the Branch Chief stays, is how this time layer was always meant to be.
But Phantom gave the Branch Chief and Yakumo his power, and thus changed history. If that had never happened, he would never do that research, and that wormhole would never open.
But then history changed, the loop was broken, time stopped rewinding, and connected to a new future. Leaving Yakumo and the Branch Chief behind.
No!
So maybe the time layer itself created a wormhole in order to return history to how it was meant to be. But why stop part-way?
Maybe it didn't have enough power to create the whole wormhole? Maybe it used what little power it had left after all those distortions in history and time loops... But it wasn't enough?
Yeah, you could be right.
Then we need to return it to its original history. Given everything that's happened, I'm not convinced that the Branch Chief is exactly a good guy...
Still, no one should have to end up like he did. And if there's a future where Yakumo can laugh like that, then we should find a way to make it happen.
I feel the same! If there's still something we can do, then we should do it!
Right! But, what DO we do? I don't think we'll be able to open up the wormhole by cutting it this time...
If you're right about it not having enough power, then I guess we need to supplement it somehow.
With what?
Um, I hadn't worked that part out yet... There must be something somewhere.
I'm sure we'll think of something. Actually, I have an idea. The vortex we were in before had a lot of power, enough to influence the worlds around it. Maybe we should go back to Arat and see if we can find anything out there.
Yeah, that could work. Okay, if we find anything interesting, we'll come back here.
30. Scene 30
1 linesMaybe we should go back to Arat and see if we can find anything out about this incomplete wormhole?
31. Scene 31
45 linesYou can't proceed without Nona.
The rift... It's smaller than it was before.
Let's try the fragment out fast! For Yakumo and the Branch Chief's sake...
Huh? I was sure that the wormhole opening was right here. I was hoping these fragments would help give it a little more power...
Isn't that it?
Hey, you're right! But it looks a lot smaller and weaker than before.
Maybe it's trying to continue history without the Branch Chief. I wish we could go to change the future with these fragments...
Hey, what are you two up to?
The time loop's over. What are you still doing here?
Couldn't tear yourself away from me, is that it?
Nope, it's definitely not that...
No, don't break my heart like that! Tell me sweet lies!
Then why are you here?
Uh, well...
There's a possibility of another future? No way!
If we open up this rift, we might be able to change history through there. It's worked in the past, when we were in a similar situation.
If we open up this rift, we might be able to change history through there.
We thought we'd try this fragment...
Honestly. You don't have a care in the world, do you?
Yakumo?
You're happy to straight up say that you want to save Chief? That you want that future?
I appreciate that you don't exactly have the best of memories of him. Still, I don't think even you could say that he deserved what happened to him.
Really?
Chief...was another me. He spent the last 30 years of his life stuck. Tomorrow doesn't come for those who are stuck. And it never did come for him.
It's like...how do I put this? Leaving him would be...frustrating, I guess? You can't go against fate. That's what they say.
My boy, so disobedient! You're not happy with how it ended either, are ya?
Shut up. I just don't like that he got away. But more than that...
Yes?
You said I was laughing. Which means, there's a future where I'm happy. Happy enough to laugh with him, of all people.
At least, that's what we saw. And as much as I want you to trust in us...
If we open up a wormhole, we don't know where it will lead. Or what we'll need to do. It's not enough to just go and take a look. We need to save the Branch Chief somehow.
I may have an idea.
Ooh? Someone's had a light bulb moment! I'm so proud of my boy! He's got some talent!
Why are you acting like my parent?
Chief jumped through the wormhole and disappeared. Maybe there's something we can do. With our power.
You think there's something you can do about it?
Then there's hope! Let's go!
However... I'll need to make one little stop before we go. There's somewhere I want to visit. Without it, I'm not coming.
Huh? But we have to hurry. We don't know how long this rift will last.
Where do you want to go?
To the office building. The one I destroyed before. There's something I want to check. Without it, I'll know in my heart that I cannot save him.
Okay then. We can get there from the cargo terminal. But please don't take too long. We don't know how long we have.
I'll be quick.
32. Scene 32
18 linesOkay. You guys wait here. You won't get through security.
Oh, good point.
What are you going to do? I can't deny, I'm a little nervous about letting you back in there...
You still don't trust me? Relax, I won't hurt anyone. Besides, the one I most wanted gone, very much is. I'll be right back. Come on, Kumos.
Comin'!
So where're we going?
His office. It should be empty now. We may not have a key, but that won't be a problem with our powers.
Heheheh. We've got ourselves a fun little search party! If we find any strange medicines lying around, I'll confiscate them! For, uh...justice!
Sure. Let's turn this place upside down.
Eh? I kinda expected you to object to that? Did you really come here to trash this place?
Pretty much. I'm not looking for anything specific. I just want to find something. Anything that will help me decide whether or not he deserves my help.
Got it! Then let's get down to business!
There you are, Yakumo! Are you done?
Heheh... I am. You're in luck. I'm willing to go to him.
Heehee. Oh boy, this is gonna be good!
Wh-What's going on? Why are you two smiling like that? It's off-putting.
Yeah, and? Have we ever given the impression of being nice guys? Come on, let's get going. We don't have much time, remember?
Yeah, you're right. Let's go back to the rift.
33. Scene 33
1 linesThere's something I want to check in the branch office. Let's go to the cargo terminal.
34. Scene 34
127 linesYou can't proceed without Nona.
It's been restored!
Looks like the wormhole's been restored!
If there's a future where we can save the Branch Chief, do you think it connects to the basement?
Probably.
Okay, let's go! Let's change the future!
Eep!
No... This can't be happening... 30 years' work... My tomorrow... My future...
I remember this! This was the moment we won against him! Not good. That means he's about to disappear! If we're going to do something, we'll have to do it quick!
Move! MOVE! Do something! Anything! No need to control the destination! Just open the gate!
Yakumo? Aren't you going to do anything?
Be quiet or I'll miss my cue.
I just...don't care anymore. Nothing matters now. I've lived my whole life with my back against the wall.
Now! Let's do this, Kumos!
Yup! Just as we planned!
The noise stopped. I don't hear the Branch Chief. Were we too late?
I felt a response. As calculated.
Really? What did you do?
I tampered with the wormhole. Right after Chief jumped through.
You did WHAT? I didn't even know you COULD do that.
I changed the coordinates to bring him to the top floor of Dust City, in this era.
Phantom interfered with the wormhole and sent him back 30 years, right? So we figured, if he can do it, maybe we can, too.
But that's insane!
All right. We've done what we set out to do.
That can't be it, surely? I don't see how this could lead to that future we saw before...
No, you're right. Yakumo and the Branch Chief seemed so happy together...
What are you doing back there? Let's go. It's done.
Go? Go where?
To the room where you first arrived. That's where I sent Chief.
The fun starts now! You're gonna love this!
R-Right. Then let's go.
What is the meaning of this? Nothing appears to have changed much. I think I'm still in Dust City...
I failed to escape. I can't get out, not even after being swallowed by a wormhole.
You should see the look on your face. I wish a had a camera on me.
What the? You?
Though I have a feeling that I'm gonna like the next look on your face even more.
So you've come to laugh at me? No, wait a minute... How did you know where I was?
How? Well sure, I could answer that. But we have something even more important to discuss.
Don't lord this over him, Yakumo.
Oooh, wonder what this is?
Yes, what is this...
......!!
Know what it is yet?
No. No! This can't be. How do you have that notebook? No one but me should even know it exists! It contains my deepest, darkest...
It's that important to you? It just looks like some dodgy research paper to me...
No. This is something far, far better than that. It's...
Ugh, there's nothing worth taking. This is getting boring.
How's about you, Yakumo? You found anything?
No, it's all just work and research. What a boring man. I really thought that if I could think of him as me, I might want to help him more. I really...
Oh?
Ooh, you got something? He hiding something naughty over there?
It's a notebook. Looks pretty old.
Kinda plain though. There's nothing even written on the cover.
It's odd for him to have a notebook anyway. Everything's electronic these days. I wonder what's inside...
Elzion transport is so confusing. I didn't know which cargo bus to take. But I was in a rush. I had work. I was lost, when a voice called out to me. It was a woman, about my age. I didn't know where I was going, so she accompanied me the whole way. I didn't know people like her existed.
Ooh, is this what I think it is?
The next day, I went back to the same spot. I know how it looks, but I had no ulterior motive.
I hadn't thanked her for her kindness the day before, and I felt bad. I just wanted to say "thank you." But I didn't see her that day.
Before I knew it, I found myself there again. What am I doing? I'm so bad at talking, no one has ever been so amicable toward me, and I know they never will be again.
I just wanted to see her face, to hear her voice. Every step I took, I longed for her to appear.
And then, there she was. I could barely believe it. I pretended it was a coincidence. I was too embarrassed to say that I came to see her.
She seemed glad to see me again. But the conversation soon ended. I was too flustered to talk.
After we parted ways, I realized. I'd forgotten to say thank you.
I hated myself so much, I couldn't sleep for three days straight.
What is all this? Some kinda journal?
He's a bit of a creep, wouldn't you say? Heheh...it's kinda funny.
Right? It's hilarious! The old man's got a dirty little secret!
What the heck is with that guy? THIS was the girl he was so desperate to get back to? She's not even his lover! She's nothing. Just some woman who happened to be polite one time! He acted so high and mighty! Always looking down on me! Just in the end, he really was just me! Hahaha! Hahahahahaha!
Gwahahahaha!
Your journal was the best thing I've read all year. We had tears in our eyes from laughing so hard.
Hey!
Give that back! That's not yours to touch!
Too late, we've already seen it. It must suck to be you, huh. Pining for over 30 years for some chick whose name you don't even know!
Even so, she was the only ray of sunshine in my life! I still haven't been able to thank her. I'll probably die with this regret. You wouldn't understand.
I would. I may never have had someone like that in my life... But I understand. You are me, after all.
That's why... I'm sending you back to your own world.
Huh? How are you going to do that?
Oh, right! Phantom did say that the Branch Chief was from my time layer!
You can return to your time layer through this pillar of light.
I...can?
Though, even if you go back, your age will stay the same. She won't fall for an old guy like you. But, you will be freed from the constraints of your unfulfilled desire.
I...can go back? To that time layer? To that time? To the world where she lives?
Oh...
AAARGHHH!
Tch. How embarrassing. I can't watch. I can't bear to see myself acting like such a fool. Now get going. I don't want to have to see your face again.
......
I'll send you to Elzion, free of charge. A token of my appreciation for the entertainment.
I never imagined you of all people would end up saving me. I should thank you.
You're able to say thank you? Impressive.
In 30 years, you will be able to do so, too. You will understand, someday.
No way. In 30 years, I will not be the same as you. Though...
I do hope that you'll have a better life on the other side.
Get you, Yakumo! Guess you've got a good side to you after all.
Don't poke fun! I felt bad for him, that's all. He was too like me.
Besides, I'm never going to see him again, so what does it matter?
Phew! The future's changed now!
Right!
Stupid future. If you think about it, I put in all this effort, but my life hasn't changed a bit.
Enough of the whining. There's no reason to be so pessimistic.
What do I have to be optimistic about? I have work tomorrow. I have to continue this life forever.
It's not like everything's gonna change all at once... But you had fun today, right?
Well, I guess...
Then that's great!
Right. We may not know what will happen tomorrow... But, it might be fun!
Hmph. Such pretty words. Although... perhaps there's a time and place even for that. Aldo, Nona. I would like to thank you.
Ooh! This Yakumo can say thank you after all! Pretty impressive!
Urgh! Stop joking around, you piece of trash!
Mornin', Yakumo! Did you sleep well?
Can't I get a moment's peace and quiet? I slept well. I was pretty tired, after all. Maybe that's why I don't feel so terrible for a change. Even though I've got work soon.
Oh.
What is it?
So this is what a "good morning" feels like. I hate my life. I hate myself. That hasn't changed. But now...
Light is shining into my cage. I get angry and sad every single day. But sometimes I laugh, too. Like yesterday.
Exactly! You still laugh, just like everybody else! You're nothin' special.
There you go again, making fun. It's still early, but I'm heading out.
Huh? Already? Don't you always put it off to the last minute?
I just feel like it, I don't know why. Maybe we could grab breakfast somewhere.
So many strange things have happened. I think I went a bit insane. And now, I...
I'm sort of looking forward to what today will bring.
