Doctor Fate is arguably the best Mythic Guardian in the game, playing more like a support than a typical tank by handing out shields instead of just soaking hits himself. Mystic Shield covers one ally while Protection Charm's area is wide enough to reliably shield the whole squad, backline included, and any damage those shields absorb also makes healing easier afterward.

We rate him B. His own health is low for a tank, so he can die before Protection Charm goes off, especially against burst damage, but if he survives, the value more than makes up for the risk.

In 1920, archaeologist Sven Nelson and his son Kent were on a dig in the valley of Ur when they discovered the underground tomb of Nabu, an ancient immortal who had been held in suspended animation for millennia.

Kent pressed a lever that set Nabu free, but in the process accidentally released a toxic gas that killed his father.

Nabu told the grieving young boy that he would reveal the secrets of the universe and give him the amulet, cloak, and helmet that would allow Kent to grow up to become Doctor Fate, an agent of the Lords of Order in their eternal battle against the Lords of Chaos.

After years of training, Kent returned to the USA a grown man.

As Doctor Fate, he battled such chaos agents as the dark sorcerer Wotan, proving his worthiness for the role.

Kent met college student Inza Cramer, who became both his romantic partner and ally in the battle against dark magic.

Together, they faced such threats as Magno, Ian Karkull, and Mister Who, as well as recovering and destroying the lost Book of Thoth.

It soon became apparent that when wearing the helmet of Nabu, Doctor Fate seemed like a different person from Kent Nelson...

almost a new persona.

Doctor Fate eventually met and allied with other superhuman beings as the Justice Society, facing evil both supernatural and in the form of the Axis powers in World War II.

However, around this time, Kent realised the helmet was asserting more control over him.

Alarmed, he remade it into a half-helmet, which reduced his powers significantly.

After the war, one of Doctor Fate's Justice Society allies, the Spectre, a supernatural being who was the personification of the wrath of God, went missing.

Doctor Fate found him and discovered that he was under the control of and evil being called Kulak.

Doctor Fate donned his full helmet once again and engaged in a massive battle with the possessed Spectre.

He succeeded in freeing the Spectre, but in the process, the helmet of Fate was lost in a mystic dimension.

Kent became a full-time physician and married Inza, and they lived a normal life for a while, but ultimately, Kent found the helmet again, indicating that the bond between them was strong enough to transcend the bounds of reality.

Another sign that their lives were irrevocably tied to magic was that Kent and Inza did not seem to age.

Requires 10 Doctor Fate Shards to unlock (a full copy also unlocks him outright, or grants 10 Shards if already owned). Shards drop from Chaos, Order, and Divine Energy Keys and from Random Mythic Champion Shards; up to 10 Shards can be bought daily via Daily Deals in the Perks store, and Custom Mythic Champion Shards convert to his Shards at a 1:1 rate. Full copies also drop from The Bleed and those Keys. He is a boosted Champion in The Bleed when drafting from Constantine's and Zatanna's banners, and is the Champion available in the Daily Rewards during weeks 11-14 and 31-34.
