How far must we travel to get close to someone?

The following is a summary report of the "Stone Tablet 241 Incident".

This was one of the most malicious operations the Shadow Decree has carried out against the Esper Union in recent years.

Last night, an unnamed Shadow Decree Councilor raided the prophecy room to steal the prophecy tablet.

Raven engaged the Councilor in battle. Seriously wounded...

She destroyed tablet 241 to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Shadow Decree.

Gaius then arrived to assist Raven.

Gaius was also seriously wounded, but managed to repel the Shadow Decree Councilor.

As a result of this incident, two of our Councilors were seriously wounded, and a prophecy tablet was destroyed.

We managed to seriously wound the Shadow Decree Councilor and drive them away.

After receiving urgent treatment, Gaius's condition has stabilized.

Unfortunately, however, Raven remains...

Comatose.

Gyrate: Somewhere

Captain

(Raven hasn't replied to any of my messages since I left.)

(Could something have happened... to someone as powerful as Raven...?)

(Is this the future she knew was coming...?)

(Hopefully, I'm just overthinking things again.)

2. Beckoning Call

31 lines

Come on.

You can do it.

Give it to me.

You can...

Captain!!!

Hazlitt: Near the Shackled Miracle

I froze in my tracks.

The scenery around me was bizarre.

The Shackled Miracle floated in the distance.

Gasping for breath, Sachiko called out from behind me.

I came back to my senses. Yes, I'd heard that mysterious voice again.

Ethereal. Gentle. Free of all traces of malice.

I wanted to trust it, to get closer...

The next moment, I found myself toward it. I couldn't stop myself.

It was Sachiko's voice that brought me back.

Sachiko

Don't go any further!

That's the Shackled Miracle up ahead!

Captain

(The Shackled Miracle?!)

(That does seem to be where the voice is coming from...)

(The closer I get to the Miracle, the clearer the mysterious voice becomes.)

Inside the Miracle... Was a familiar voice calling to me?

I couldn't help but think about Raven's prophecy...

Could I really be the "enemy of all Miracles"?

Sachiko

What are you doing just standing there?! Get the heck out of here!

The closer you get to a Miracle, the more Miramon there are!

The city of Hazlitt was completely wiped out by Miramon!

It's already super dangerous at this distance!

Captain

Wait, Sachiko. You've got some explaining to do.

What are you doing here, anyway?!

After all, I'm doing this earlier than expected...

... And nobody should have known that but me.

Hazlitt: Near the Shackled Miracle

One week before.

After the prophecy meeting, I'd wandered out often, mainly to buy train tickets.

I bought tickets for lots of different trains.

Then I picked a random one out of the stack.

Even if the Esper Union or Shadow Decree noticed that something was afoot, they wouldn't know which train I'd taken.

So how did Sachiko manage to find me so quickly?

Sachiko

Because of Miss Raven!

I went to see Miss Raven that day, after the prophecy meeting.

I told her I was worried about how dangerous it might be for you to go looking for Mr. Yamato, Captain.

Will Captain be safe?

Miss Raven didn't answer me. She just suddenly hugged me and started crying.

I didn't know what was happening. I guessed she just needed a hug all of a sudden.

So I gave her a hug and stayed with her for a while.

And finally, she started talking.

Raven

If you're worried, why don't you follow Captain and protect him?

Sachiko

And then Miss Raven told me which train you'd taken.

So... Let's stick together from now on!

Captain

(So Sachiko got "future intel" from Raven too?)

(But for this kind of thing, the fewer people who know about it, the better...)

(If the Shadow Decree were to notice that Sachiko was coming to find me, then all they'd have to do is follow her to catch up with me...)

(And then there'd be no point in me trying to get ahead of them...)

(Would Raven really do such a thing?)

(Maybe Sachiko's lying to me, and she didn't really get intel from Raven...)

(But there's no way for me to confirm that... Raven hasn't been answering my messages.)

(Just to be on the safe side, I'll have to refuse Sachiko.)

Sachiko

Why so quiet again, Captain?

Captain

Stop following me, Sachiko.

Sachiko

Huh?!

But I can keep you safe!

Captain

I think it'll be safer if we split up.

I'll contact you if I run into trouble.

Sachiko

Captain... you don't trust me?

Even though it was Miss Raven who sent me?

Captain

If Raven really planned things to be this way...

Then me refusing you must have also been fate.

Maybe Raven saw that you and I will become partners in the future...

But not for now.

Sachiko

But I...

*CRACK*

Gunfire!

Before I could realize what was happening, Sachiko leapt at me and pushed me aside.

Captain

(She's strong... Was that the reaction of an Esper?)

A hooded figure stepped forward, holding a sniper rifle.

Leon

You two left sooner than expected.

But I still caught up with you.

Now be a good little bunny and get out of here. Leave him to me.

Sachiko

Not a chance!

Leon

Then I guess we'll have to fight it out.

4. A Path

48 lines

How far must we travel to get close to someone?

Hazlitt: Near the Shackled Miracle

The defeated Shadow member scurried off in a hurry.

After he'd left, Sachiko stood silent and unmoving.

And then...

*WHAM*

She suddenly collapsed on the ground.

Captain

Sachiko?!

That's when I saw her wounds...

It turned out that Sachiko had paid a price for shoving me aside.

She fought bravely, even though she'd been shot...

She held out until he'd gone before allowing herself to collapse.

Captain

(What do I do?)

(We fought off that Shadow member for now, but he might come back at any moment.)

(I've gotta get out of here, and fast. But...)

(... What about Sachiko?)

(Can I really trust her?)

(She just saved me, but...)

(What if this was all just a show to gain my trust...?)

(Or, maybe Sachiko really got intel from Raven and she really wants to protect me. But still...)

(That Shadow member only found me because they followed Sachiko.)

(Maybe they have some way of tracking Sachiko's movements.)

(So it wouldn't be smart to bring her along.)

While I hesitated...

I heard a murmuring sound.

It was like I was on a path.

Unable to see anything.

Nor hear anything.

Nor feel anything.

I didn't know how long I'd tread that path.

Nor did I know when I'd reach the end.

I just kept moving forward.

When things got hard, I'd slow down or change direction.

It was tough, but I was always getting closer.

...

Sachiko's unconscious murmuring tugged at my heartstrings.

Captain

(How far must we travel to get close to someone?)

(In the end... she just wants to be close to people. She's determined, even if she's not quite sure how.)

(Is a girl like Sachiko even capable of plotting against anybody?)

(Well, then...)

I decided to take the bet.

An hour later.

There was nobody at the place where the battle had happened.

A claw plucked up some blood-stained earth from the ground...

Then sniffed its intoxicating scent.

Freddy

The little bunny is injured...

Hunters...

Let the hunt begin!

5. Pursuit

19 lines

Hazlitt: Highway

In the dark, cramped space, I tried to calm my breathing.

Holding tight to Sachiko, I was stuffed into a shipping container with a bunch of cargo.

With a sudden jolt, the truck started moving.

With the most dangerous moments most likely behind us, I felt a bit of relief.

The Shadow Decree convoy sped down the highway.

Leon

Seems like they hitched a ride. Can you really smell them from this far away?

Freddy

Don't underestimate me. Anyway...

... We've got another way to locate them, don't we?

They won't get away.

Huh? The truck... stopped.

The truck stopped sooner than expected.

On the highway, a cargo truck was stopped by the Shadow Decree convoy.

Freddy

That smell...

It's bunny blood.

Leon

Yes, and the locator shows she's here.

Freddy

Shadow Decree operation! Get out of the way if you know what's good for you!!

With a loud creak...

The cargo door opened.

6. Sunshine

41 lines

If it's not shadow, then it's sunshine.

Hazlitt: Highway

Captain

It's sunny!

Leon

Looks like we've been fooled.

Freddy

That tricky, wretched little rabbit!

Captain

(My bet paid off.)

(Last night, after I bandaged Sachiko...)

(I tossed her blood-stained communicator into a cargo truck that was scheduled to leave soon.)

(Since we made it through the night safely in a different truck, I guess that means we managed to shake off the Shadow Decree.)

(It looks like Sachiko didn't intend for the Shadow members to find us.)

(Instead, there must be a Shadow spy in the Union who was able to track Sachiko's communicator.)

(When Raven mentioned the communicator's location feature, I guess she was hinting at that...)

(Perhaps she's already seen my future...)

(How many prophecies has she gotten, anyway? And does she really hold a prophecy meeting every time?)

(I wouldn't want to be an enemy of someone with powers like that.)

(Thankfully, Raven is on the Union's side...)

Sachiko

Good morning!

The chipper voice interrupted my tangled thoughts.

Sachiko addressed me with a smile.

Captain

What are you doing so happy first thing in the morning?

Sachiko

I'm just happy because...

... Because we're buddies!

I was taken aback.

Sachiko

Captain... Didn't you say before that you didn't want me to come with you?

Before I passed out, I thought, "Captain won't be here when I wake up."

So it made me happy to see you first thing when I woke up!

You rescued me, Captain!

Thank you!

It looks like Miss Raven's predictions were right in the end!

Her smile was warm enough to melt ice on a cold winter's day.

If Raven's prophecy had allowed Sachiko to protect me...

Then our fates might be inextricably intertwined.

When Raven embraced Sachiko, she was weeping.

Sachiko... What fate might await you?

Will your smile always be this bright?

After a brief respite...

We continued our journey in the cargo truck, all the way to the town of Graywater.

Sachiko got a new communicator, one that couldn't be tracked by the Union.

Based on Raven's prophecy, we were soon to meet the person who knew the whereabouts of Mr. Yamato...

... The President of the Graywater Hunter's Guild...

Triki.
