Give it to me.
Mystic Mountains: Outside the Withering Miracle
The voice was so clear.
I was certain it was coming from inside the Miracle.
I want to see you...
I couldn't recall who the voice belonged to. All I wanted was to get closer...
It was like reuniting with a long-lost friend.
I'm coming...
I couldn't help but take step after step toward the voice.
Stop right there!
Sachiko pulled me back, and I came back to my senses.
A sea of Miramon spread out across the desert before me. It made me break out in a cold sweat.
Curses! It's a horde of Miramon...
The terrifying multitude of Miramon outside made the swarms of Miramon back in the mine seem like a cozy safe house in comparison...
We began retreating, intending to shelter back in the mine.
And then I heard a sound.
*CLINK*
It was like a barely perceptible fracture had appeared in a pane of glass near my ears...
It was faint, but unmissable.
I turned around to see Leon, of the Shadow Decree.
At some point, he must have retreated behind everyone. He was fiddling with a red crystal in his hand.
A shard of... the Lion's Heart?
*CLINK CLINK CLINK*
In a series of snaps and pops, Leon smashed the crystal into a fine red dust.
As Leon swept his hand through the air, the dust dispersed into a shimmering red mist that surrounded and enveloped us.
Any exposed skin began to tingle upon coming into contact with the mist.
What is that?
*BZZZ BZZZZZ*
As the red mist swirled, it was as if an invisible wave swept across the battlefield.
The desert, the Miracle, and the horde of Miramon all seemed to stand still for a moment.
I knew that feeling...
Back in the Union's underground testing site, it was what I'd felt when those Miramon attacked me in a frenzy...
Sheer terror.
But this time, a hundred times more intense.
*WHOOSH*
A swarm of tiny black dots burst out of the Miracle as it floated in mid-air, like a wasp nest had been disturbed...
They didn't look like much. But as they descended, it became clear what they were...
Miramon!
They streamed continuously into the horde of Miramon on the ground, adding to their already-massive number.
The horde, which had been scattered about the desert, slowly drew closer to us with purpose.
Leon! What have you done?
No! That's not Leon!
Aahahahaha!
So perceptive of you, little Sachiko!
"Leon" pulled off his cloak.
And as it fell to the ground...
I saw a red figure...
It was... The man I'd seen over and over again in so many documents...
The man who'd found me and brought me to the Union...
... It was Yamato.
2. Have Fun!

*CHOOM CHOOM CHOOM*
Everyone was still reeling from the sight of Yamato.
A helicopter descended, dropping a rope ladder.
Hey, where's Leon?
What did you do to him?
Yamato paid him no mind, but just snapped his fingers.
A red-and-black bolt of lightning cracked down and cleared away the approaching Miramon in an instant.
Witnessing this display of terrifying power, we were shocked into an oppressive silence for a moment.
Yamato strolled through the group as if nothing had happened and stopped next to me.
We meet again, young man.
I can see that you have many questions for me.
When Triki said he'd help me find Yamato, this wasn't what I had in mind...
I took a deep breath and asked my question.
May I ask where you found me, Mr. Yamato?
Of course, it was at...
A certain "Gate".
"Gate"?
It wouldn't be inaccurate to call it a "Miracle Nexus" either.
Every Miracle has a Gate. The only difference is whether it's open or closed.
(Sure enough, my half-monster state has something to do with Miracles.)
The Gate you're looking for isn't at this Miracle, though.
So to fix my problem... I have to go to one of these Gates?
Don't push your luck.
Luck?
You've noticed it, haven't you? There's a... presence within the Miracle. And your fates are intertwined.
People imagine fate as a smooth, steady road. That's far too charitable.
Fate is more like a cliff...
Everyone takes a step over the precipice...
And then comes the inevitable fall. You have no choice in that matter.
Or, if you prefer to speak of gates and doors...
You're locked up tight.
That is your fate. Luck cannot save you from it.
Well then, are you ready to learn where your Gate is?
Yamato's words left me speechless.
Was I really... going to embark on this fated path of Miracles?
...
Yamato didn't press me for an answer. Instead, he just began climbing the rope ladder.
The helicopter rose slowly and began flying toward the Miracle.
It seemed like it was because of that red mist...
That the Miramon had ignored Yamato's helicopter and swarmed at us instead.
My apologies. I have important business to take care of, so I must be off!
Yamato's voice rang out through the air.
Captain! Thanks for helping me find my way to the Miracle!
Help me hold off these Miramon for a while and I'll make sure you're rewarded!
Have fun!
As Yamato departed, the Miramon surged toward us like a tidal wave.
3. Elite
31 linesMystic Mountains: Outside the Withering Miracle
After fighting off several waves of Miramon, they still continued to stream out of the Miracle.
We were so close to the Miracle that the endless flood of gigantic Miramon threatened to overwhelm us.
Sachiko and the Shadow members were barely holding up.
*ROAR*
The ground broke open and a massive Miramon burrowed out of the desert, then howled toward the sky.
Mystic Mountains: Outside the Withering Miracle
*SWOOSH*
A flaming spear sliced through the sky and pinned the Miramon to the ground.
Several silhouettes appeared in the firelight.
What power! A single strike had wiped out Miramon that our entire group would have been unable to handle.
That strike had also cleared the Miramon from a large swath of ground nearby.
So that was the true power of the Union's elite...
Miss Leora!
Long time no see, Sachiko! You've gotten taller!
The Union crew surrounded Sachiko, and it seemed that she knew them all quite well.
Are you okay, Sachiko?
I'm fine, but it's a good thing you guys came!
Now that we're here, you can just sit back and enjoy the show!
You've done well, Sachiko...
It looks like you've protected Captain!
While the Union's elite Espers cleared the nearby Miramon...
The Shadow members were able to recover enough strength to retreat into the mine, albeit in a sorry state.
Before I knew it, they'd already disappeared into the intricate complex of mineshafts.
Hey, those Shadow rats sure are in a hurry!
Feng Nuxi was about to charge forward when Gaius stopped her.
The mine is about to collapse. It's not worth chasing just a couple of rats.
Let's handle the Miramon first.
*SWOOSH*
The sky filled with flames once more, but it was completely different from the Miramon before.
Amidst the flames right in front of us stood a four-armed humanoid Miramon.
4. Unrestrained

Isn't this a perfect opportunity?
I heard that you have the power to enhance the strength of Espers.
Why don't we see what you can do?!
Mystic Mountains: Outside the Withering Miracle
As the gargantuan Miramon collapsed and dissipated, I could finally relax a bit.
The effect of the red mist seemed to have dissipated as well, and the Miramon's attack had relented.
The Miramon horde began to retreat to the Miracle.
Well done! You're pretty good!
Come, add me as a contact!
We can team up sometime to take out some Miramon together!
It turns out that the rumors are true. You're a gifted leader.
Your talent is simply outstanding.
Raven mentioned before that she'd invited you to join the Union, but you declined.
Just give it some more thought, and contact Drew after this is all over.
"After this is all over?" You mean...
You realize that I don't want to join the Union right now, right?
So... why would I want to join later?
Haha! You don't beat around the bush, do you?
(I guess... this was a part of fate too...?)
Captain is just as sharp as Raven said.
Feng Nuxi gave Gaius an exasperated look.
Looks like those of us who have been to prophecy meetings should be a bit more careful with Captain!
Unless you want your weak points exposed, it's best to just keep quiet.
Speaking of Raven...
I tried to ask her about the prophecy, but she never answered me.
Raven, she...
She tried to stand in the way of a Shadow Decree Councilor...
The enemy was powerful, and Gaius here was hurt when he tried to intervene. He's only just recovered.
And Raven remains in a coma.
But don't be disheartened. That was Raven's choice, a part of her fate.
Hearing Feng Nuxi's words, it was like having the wind knocked out of me.
Even the Union Councilors couldn't protect themselves in this whirlwind?
Then next on my path...
What might await me...?
Suddenly, a familiar voice rang out from behind.
Looks like everything is going quite well!
5. Thank You

Looks like everything is going quite well!
Seeing Triki, Sachiko frowned in exasperation.
You're the one who sent the Shadow Decree to the mines to catch us, aren't you?!
The deal was that you'd give me the data, and I'd give you Yamato's whereabouts, was it not?
Mr. Yamato just happened to be hiding within the Shadow Decree. I believe I've held up my end of the bargain.
You!
Don't be angry, little Sachiko. You wouldn't want to give up this hard-won thank-you gift, would you?
Triki pulled out a notebook.
What's that...
Mr. Yamato said he appreciated your help, and that you should be rewarded.
He and I are businessmen, and you can always trust a businessman's word!
This is the journal Mr. Yamato kept during his expedition to the Raine Tundra. It contains the coordinates of where you were found!
Seeing that information so close at hand, I hesitated for a moment.
(Am I... really ready to begin this journey of fate?)
What a win! We're one big step closer now!
Sachiko smiled cheerfully as she held Yamato's notebook high.
It's been tough, but nothing could stop us yet!
Sachiko's positivity lightened the gloom in my heart somewhat.
Instead of wandering in a daze, we had to continue moving forward.
Well, we can consider the thank-you gift delivered!
Good luck to you all!
With that, Triki departed.
(So... now we're headed to the Raine Tundra?)
Gaius seemed a bit apprehensive.
To get to the Raine Tundra, you'll have to pass through Utgard.
The situation is complex there, and the Union can't get involved directly.
This envelope contains instructions...
If you run into trouble, follow the instructions. They'll lead you to a Union contact who'll provide support.
I hope that will be of use to you.
Okay!
(Since I arrived in this world, I've learned a thing or two about local affairs.)
(Utgard is a tricky place.)
(Has the Union managed to infiltrate it?)
Alright, don't overthink things. Just get moving!
Anyway, everything will come together in front of your "Gate"...
And all you'll need to do...
... is face what you find there.
The goal had become clearer. Sachiko and I bid farewell to the Union crew and proceeded to depart.
Next stop, Utgard.
