Utgard: Larkspur Detective Agency

(After joining the detective agency, Parmi had to face reality: she had become a working girl.)

Tevor

Parmi, from now on you'll be in charge of receiving customers at the front desk.

Parmi

No prob, boss!

Wealthy Lady

Is this the Larkspur Detective Agency?

Parmi

Yes, welcome!

...

Wealthy Lady

Are you guys taking any new cases today?

Tevor

Of course! Parmi, help this lady with her coat.

Parmi

I can take that for you miss.

(Parmi runs over, takes the lady's coat off her hands, and hangs it on the coat rack.)

Parmi

Madam, this way please... Ouch!

(*Thump*)

(Parmi, in a hurry to usher the new client to a seat, didn't notice that her own horns got caught on the coat that had just been hung up.)

(As soon as she turns, the entire coat rack falls heavily on the floor.)

Wealthy Lady

My coat!!!

Parmi

Sorry...

Tevor

My apologies madam, I'll get your coat cleaned up right away!

Wealthy Lady

This felt is double-layered camel hair! How are YOU going to clean it?!

Ugh! Everything seems to be going wrong!

(The woman grabs her coat from Tevor angrily and storms out of the detective agency.)

Parmi

Ah... Tevor... She left...

Tevor

Yes, I can see that...

Parmi, do you know what to do when receiving a client?

Parmi

Umm... Wave and smile?

Tevor

...

Parmi

Umm... Also, help them with their coats and pour coffee?

Tevor

Not just that. As the face of our detective agency, you have to let the client feel our sincerity.

Put yourself in their shoes and know what they're anxious about.

Young Man

Hello... Is this the Larkspur Detective Agency?

Tevor

Here, I'll demonstrate.

Good day sir. What can we do for you?

(Tevor smiles as he guides the new client into the lobby.)

(Pouring coffee, passing out materials, taking out pen and paper to record the client's requests. All in perfect order and composure.)

Young Man

So... That's pretty much it.

Tevor

Sir, soothe your worries. You have complete client confidentiality here.

We give this privilege so you won't hesitate to leave out any key details.

Young Man

Investigator Tevor, how did you know...?

Tevor

Our words might deceive us sometimes, but our body language never lies.

You stopped suddenly in the middle of what you were saying, touched your earlobe, and swallowed. That was your tell.

Also, when I confirmed the information with you, you unconsciously looked down to the left.

Young Man

Sure enough, you are as good as they say! What meticulous observation!

(Under Tevor's guidance, the client reveals many details that weren't previously mentioned.)

(Parmi looks at the man's eyes, full of trust and admiration. This was the encouragement she needed!)

(After the consultation, Tevor followed the client to the scene to understand the situation better, while Parmi sat back at the front desk with renewed confidence.)

Anxious Woman

Is this the Larkspur Detective Agency? I have an emergency!

Parmi

Hello miss. What can I help you with?

Anxious Woman

Someone stole my dog! Please help me find him!

Parmi

Calm down. Please have a seat and tell me all the details.

Sad Man

Actually, forget it... This agency doesn't look like much...

Parmi

Don't worry, we're all professionals here.

Tell me a little about your situation. When did you first notice your dog went missing?

(Parmi gets out a pen and paper, and writes down all the details.)

Anxious Woman

That's about it... When I came back from my work trip this morning, I found the front door to the yard was pried open.

Sad Man

She woke me up. That's when I found out the dog was missing.

Parmi

Did you hear anything strange last night?

Sad Man

No... I had one too many drinks last night though, so I slept pretty sound.

Parmi

Were there any suspicious markings on the door or lock?

Sad Man

Uhhh... How am I supposed to know, I'm not a detective...

Parmi

Sir, please don't leave out any key details. Anything you remember could be important to cracking the case.

Earlier you said you didn't hear anything, but you were fidgeting with your earlobe when you said it.

Then, when you were referring to the door and lock, you stole a glance at the woman next to you. I asked you to confirm your details, and you never looked me in the eye.

Anxious Woman

What are you hiding?

Sad Man

Nothing! I'm not hiding anything! This girl is full of it!

Parmi

I'm not trying to slander you... Our words might deceive us sometimes, but our body language never lies.

(Parmi tries her best to imitate Tevor, with just the right smile on the corner of her mouth, as if nothing could escape her.)

Sad Man

I... I didn't!

Anxious Woman

Why can't you look me in the eyes? Tell me!

Were you too drunk and forgot to close the door?

Sad Man

I...

Anxious Woman

So that's it then!

Sad Man

Hold on! Wait...!

(The man narrowly avoids the purse thrown at him, turns around and runs out of the detective agency. The woman chases after him while yelling and cursing.)

(Tevor sees them running off as he returns to the agency.)

Tevor

Parmi, what happened here? Were those clients?

Parmi

They didn't sign with us. We just had a talk and they started yelling and fighting.

Tevor

Why were they fighting?

Parmi

I have no idea...

I tried doing it up to the standards you demonstrated, to see through the lies of the clients and convince them that the Larkspur Detective Agency is legit.

Strange... Why didn't they develop admiration for me? Why did they start fighting instead?

2. Autumn Milk Tea

71 lines

Utgard: Saunbert Square

(As night approaches, people gradually gather in the streets.)

Tevor

Why are there so many people here?

Parmi

There's a very popular Milk Tea Shop over there. These people are all probably in line to buy some delicious milk tea.

Tevor

Ah, I remember now. That shop recently released a new product called "Autumn Impressions".

But all these internet sensation Milk Tea Shops never have good tasting drinks... They just look good on the outside.

Parmi

True. But that shop's owner is trying their best to make good Milk Tea though.

Tevor

Oh? You've had some?

Milk Tea Shop Staff

Ms. Parmi! You've finally come!

The side door of the Milk Tea Shop opens, and an employee comes walking out with a smile.

Parmi

Hmm? What is it?

Milk Tea Shop Staff

The owner saw you outside, and told me to come get you.

Tevor

Parmi, you know the owner of this shop?

Parmi

Not really. I've been here a few times for drinks, that's all.

(The employee enthusiastically drags the two of them into the store. Parmi gets pulled along with a blank expression on her face.)

Utgard: Milk Tea Shop

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Ms. Parmi, I've been waiting for you! Want to taste our newest "Autumn Impressions" drink?

Parmi

Oh that sounds nice! Thanks!

Tevor

So you called us over here just to have us try your new Milk Tea?

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Of course! To have Ms. Parmi try our new products is an honor!

It was all thanks to Ms. Parmi that our newest "Autumn Impressions" is selling so hot!

Tevor

???

(One month ago...)

Milk Tea Shop Boss

How did we do today?

Milk Tea Shop Staff

Only half as much as yesterday...

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Hmm... Guess things got old quick.

Milk Tea Shop Staff

When our newest drink is ready, the customers will all be back.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Yea, but all they do is take selfies in front. No one buys anything.

Hmm... I wonder why...

Parmi

Well... Maybe if you guys focused more on the taste rather than what the cups look like...

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Who are you?

Parmi

Ah sorry! I overheard you guys talking about sales, and couldn't help myself...

Milk Tea Shop Boss

So you're saying our Milk Tea doesn't taste good?

Parmi

Yea, the drinks all look amazing, with beautiful crackers and nuts on top...

But all that extra stuff makes it taste weird. You don't even know what flavor it is anymore.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

...

Parmi

Moreover, the layered design forces the syrup to settle below. So it tastes too sweet when you first drink it, and becomes basically tasteless at the end.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

But young people these days all want fancy designs and concepts and stuff.

Parmi

Well, having a great tasting drink could also be a form of art...

Tevor

So that's how you met.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Yea... Back then I didn't take Ms. Parmi's words to heart.

Tevor

So you don't agree with her?

Milk Tea Shop Boss

I understand where she's coming from, it's just that...

She's never been in business herself, so I thought she just didn't understand.

To my surprise, she returned the very next day!

Parmi

Hey Milk Tea guy. I thought up a good way to liven up your products.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Oh? Do tell.

Parmi

If you want the drink to look good on the outside, perhaps consider improving on the raw materials.

Focus on the fruit and maxing out freshness and sweetness.

Then you can adjust the variety and concentration of the tea base to neutralize sweetness.

I wrote down all the specific ideas. If you're interested, you can take a look.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

...

I adjusted the ingredients according to Miss Parmi's suggestions, and the taste really improved!

A mix of psychedelic sweet and sour, just like a street full of fallen leaves in Autumn!

So I rebranded it as "Autumn Impressions" and made it our first new product this fall.

Tevor

So... This Milk Tea is actually Parmi's creation.

Way to go, Parmi!

Parmi

It was nothing. You were the one that made the actual Milk Tea. I just helped things along.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

No need to be so humble! We owe our success right now to you!

Ever since "Autumn Impressions" went on sale, we've been waiting for you to return. I wanted to personally extend my gratitude.

Parmi

You're too kind. The important thing is we all have this delicious new Milk Tea to enjoy!

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Oh that's right, what do you do for a living, Ms. Parmi? Would you be interested in coming on as a drink designer?

Tevor

Tryin' to take my talent?

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Well, I know talent when I see it... Doesn't hurt to try heh heh.

Parmi

Thanks, but I like the job I have now.

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Huh. Alright then.

Tevor

But if you guys need help every now and then, I'm glad to be of assistance!

Parmi

I'm more than happy to come over and help you guys perfect the taste of new drinks!

Milk Tea Shop Boss

Wonderful! I think we'll be seeing a lot more of each other in the future, Ms. Parmi!

From now on, all your drinks are on the house! Oh, same goes for this gentleman here.

Tevor

Thanks!

3. Mystery of Goodwill

67 lines

Utgard: Saunbert Square

(The Food Festival has started. Tevor takes the Larkspur Detective Agency to a team building activity.)

Tevor

I heard we'll be able to taste all kinds of goodies from other regions this time!

Intisar

So many people...

Parmi

Now THIS is a party! It's like the entirety of Utgard is all here!

White Collar Lady

Oh Parmi, fancy running into you here.

Parmi

Amy! How've you been?

White Collar Lady

Ugh... Work is brutal lately. Hey let's catch up sometime!

Security Guard

Oh hey, it's Ms. Parmi! You guys are off work early today.

Parmi

Yea, our boss wanted us to experience the fine cuisines of the world today!

Marshal

Good evening Parmi. Didn't think I'd run into you here.

That ice cream shop up ahead is really good.

Parmi

Oh hey Jayson! Alright, I'll try it out for sure!

Tevor

Parmi, are you an Utgardian?

Parmi

Nope.

Intisar

Then how come you know EVERYONE here?

Parmi

Huh? You mean you guys don't know them?

Amy was a client remember? We helped her find her cat.

Abu is a security guard for our building. He works in the basement garage.

Jayson is a Marshal for our district. Tevor met him before.

Intisar

Man... I don't remember any of that. Tevor, do you remember these people?

Tevor

Hmm... After hearing Parmi's explanation, I do seem to recall meeting them before, but not to the extent that Parmi remembers them...

Guess Parmi has an excellent memory when it comes to people then.

Salesperson

Guys, you wanna try some Green Bean Cake? They're a delicacy in Tangton!

(Suddenly, a salesperson comes over with a tray.)

(Parmi eagerly stuffs a piece of cake in her mouth.)

Parmi

The aroma of green beans neutralizes the sweetness... Not greasy at all.

So this is what desserts taste like in Tangton... Complete different from Utgard.

Greedy Child

I want to eat that cake over there. The one that girl has.

Curious Child

I wanna try some Green Bean Cake too!

(Parmi's words attract a group of kids over to them. They quickly dispatch the rest of the Green Bean Cake.)

(The girl with the tray looks at Parmi with gratitude.)

Salesperson

Miss, if you're buying some, I'll give you a few extra pieces!

(Tevor's glance shifts to Intisar.)

Tevor

You could learn a lot from Parmi... How to get along with your co-workers... Not scaring clients away...

Intisar

I've never scared away any of your clients. They all had too much baggage and not enough cash. They weren't interested in our services.

Plus, what's so hard about complimenting people? I don't need to learn something that useless!

Tevor

Complimenting is an art in itself. Not as easy as you think.

(Intisar walks over to the barbeque stand with a scowl.)

Intisar

Hey boss man! Lemme get 3 sticks of the roast squid!

BBQ Stall Owner

Yo what's up little lady! Comin' right up!

(Intisar takes the sticks of roast squid and cautiously bites into one.)

Intisar

Oh man... This squid is really... Really... Chewy!

(Although she was trying her best to give a compliment, Intisar's smile still came across rigid and uncomfortable.)

(The roast squid cook started to feel a little awkward too.)

BBQ Stall Owner

Uhh... If you don't like it, you don't have to eat it all, it's okay...

Intisar

Hey! That was my version of saying it was good!

Parmi

Relax, Intisar.

The squid was a little overcooked at the tips, but don't you think that extra chewiness adds some tang to the flavor?

Yea... Like eating rubber...

But the main part is still tender and soft. You can just eat around the tips.

(Parmi made eating it look so tasty that Intisar couldn't help but to take another bite of the squid tip.)

Intisar

Well, if you put it like that, I guess it ain't half bad.

Tevor

So? Ready to admit it?

Intisar

Yea yea yea... Parmi is the queen of compliments.

So what's your secret?

Parmi

I dunno... Never thought about it.

Tevor

Probably because Parmi is just naturally optimistic. She sees the positive side in all things.

The world is beautiful no matter what in her eyes. It's kinda contagious actually, heh.

Intisar

So that means I'm too pessimistic?

Parmi

Not at all, you're just more... Straight forward... In a cool way.

Intisar

Really?

Parmi

True also... Saying what's on your mind is a great quality.

You always get right to the point. Something Tevor and I can't do.

Intisar

Uhh... Thanks...

(Intisar lowers her head, feeling a little embarrassed.)

Tevor

See? Natural talent...

4. Agency's Fame

81 lines

Utgard: Larkspur Detective Agency

(On a weekday afternoon, Tevor lies down over a pile of files, his ears drooping weakly on the pages.)

Tevor

Ugh... Even the most clever chefs can't cook without the correct utensils...

Parmi

Tevor, what's wrong?

Tevor

This case can't be solved. There're no clues whatsoever, and I can't think of anything to move things along.

Parmi

Then why did you agree to take this case? Even the Marshals couldn't figure it out.

Tevor

For our Agency's reputation and fame, of course!

We've been getting fewer cases recently. If this continues, we'll be out of business.

If we can find the culprit for this robbery and murder case, our reputation will skyrocket!

Too bad there aren't any clues...

Parmi

Hmm... Didn't the Marshals say there was a witness?

Tevor

That's where the problem lies.

The witness was the victim's son, but he was so traumatized that he went mute.

Parmi

Stress-induced aphasia?

Tevor

Yea... Or the Marshals would have figured this out by now.

Parmi

Perhaps I can help...

Tevor

What do you mean?

Parmi

I can delve into his dreams, and help you find some clues.

Tevor

You can do that?! Worth a try!

(After confirming that sneaking into dreams would not cause harm to the human body, the sheriff adopted Parmi's suggestion.)

(The next day, Parmi sits beside the boy with her eyes closed, and guides him to enter his dreamscape.)

Dream: Inside the House

(In a bright bedroom, lying on the carpet, was a woman with no vital signs.)

Parmi

So this is his dream?

Little Boy

*Sobs*... Mom...

(The closet door pushes open and a boy comes out.)

(He kneels next to his mother's body, inconsolable with tears.)

Little Boy

Mom, wake up!

*Sobs*... Mom... Please wake up!

Parmi

*Sigh*...

I see... Allow me to grant your wish!

Dream: Within the Subconscious

Little Boy

!!!

What is this place?

Parmi

A place where your desires come true.

Tell me, what is it that you wish for the most?

Little Boy

I... I want my mom back!

She's hurt! She won't wake up!

Parmi

Your mother is right there...

(The little boy looks in the direction Parmi is pointing to, and in the distance, a slim figure emerges.)

Boy's Mother

Honey... I'm right here.

Little Boy

Mom?

Mom! You're okay!

Boy's Mother

I'm here to say goodbye sweetheart... I'm going to a distant place...

Little Boy

You don't want me anymore?!

Boy's Mother

Of course not sweetie... You're the only thing I care about.

But life is full of goodbyes... I know it's not fair, but mommy knows you're brave!

Little Boy

Mommy... I'm sorry...

It was my fault... If only I were older... Stronger... I could've stopped those bad men...

Boy's Mother

Shhh... Mommy would never blame you. I'm so glad you didn't get hurt.

Little Boy

But...

Boy's Mother

But can you be a good boy and do one more thing for mommy?

Little Boy

Anything!

Boy's Mother

Mommy wants you to continue being brave, and grow up healthy and strong.

(The boy looks at his mom's warm smile, eyes full of tears.)

(Parmi slowly walks up and pats his head.)

Parmi

I know you'll make your mom proud!

(Parmi recalls her powers, and the dreamscape vanishes.)

Utgard: Larkspur Detective Agency

Little Boy

!!!

(Back in reality, the boy wakes up from his dream. His mother was gone, but her smile and final words will always remain with him.)

Parmi

How do you feel?

Little Boy

It's you...

Ugh... I... Can talk!

Tevor

Wow, he actually talked. Nicely done Parmi!

Hey kid, I gotta few questions for you.

Parmi

Tevor, let him rest a little. He needs time to get his bearings.

Little Boy

You want to ask me about my mom, don't you...?

Go ahead... I'll be fine.

(With the witness's help, Tevor gets the important clues he's been looking for.)

(A week later, the Marshals arrested the person responsible.)

(The Larkspur Detective Agency was on the front page of all the news outlets, just as Tevor had hoped.)

Utgard: Larkspur Detective Agency

(On a weekday afternoon, the Larkspur Detective Agency was as busy as can be.)

Client A

I heard there was an Esper here that could cure memory loss?

Client B

My child never leaves the house. Can something like this be fixed using dreams?

Client C

Can I talk with my late wife through a dream?

Client D

Can you make it so the girl I like dreams about me? I'll pay double!

Parmi

Wait... Hold on... It doesn't work like that... This is a detective agency!

(Tevor lies helplessly on a pile of files and papers, and delicately massages his ears.)

Tevor

This is NOT what I had in mind!
