Is Sung Il-Hwan good?

Sung Il-Hwan can't recover MP from his basic attack at all, so his whole rotation depends on stacking a buff through his basic skill and then cashing that in with his ultimate to actually get MP back. That same ultimate refreshes his other buffs and applies a status that hits even harder against enemies already in a Break state.

When his MP finally runs dry, the standard play is tagging him out to recover while another Dark ally takes over, then swapping him back in once he's ready.

Strengths

  • Ultimate refreshes his buffs while applying a bonus effect against broken enemies
  • Deals extra damage to enemies already in a Break state

Weaknesses

  • Cannot recover MP from basic attacks, requiring tag-outs to manage resources

Background

Sung Il-Hwan, aka Daddy Woo, is a playable Hunter in Solo Leveling: ARISE.

He is a Dark-element Striker who specializes in relentless close-quarters combat, overwhelming enemies through rapid dual-blade strikes and escalating power.

By continuously using skills to build Ruler's Upgrade stacks, he amplifies his damage with every exchange while managing his MP to fuel devastating follow-up attacks.

He marks targets, suppresses them under his blade, and unleashes Apocalyptic Might at peak stacks to deal crushing blows, dominating the battlefield through sheer relentless pressure.

Sung Jinwoo's father. He went missing a long time ago after being trapped in a dungeon while trying to save a teammate during a raid.

Dossier #01: A Fiery Awakening

He wanted to help people. He wanted to save those in danger.

Perhaps it was only natural that he became a fire fighter.

That night, Il-Hwan was met with flames more determined than any he had ever faced:

an inferno caused by a magic beast that escaped during a Dungeon Break.

The fire was, without a doubt, the worst he had ever experienced.

Even breathing was a struggle. He felt as if he would turn to ash, even in his fire-resistant suit.

But he didn't stop. He was determined to rescue every last person who was trembling in fear amidst the blaze.

As Il-Hwan managed to lug the last of the people he had seen out in the open and escape the building, he heard a voice- a voice so faint that shouldn't have been audible over the blaze, but it reached Il-Hwan's ears nonetheless.

"There's still someone inside."

Disregarding the warnings from his team about the intensity fire, he leapt into the flames.

His heavy equipment suddenly felt as light as a feather.

His senses became razor-sharp. Waiting for Il-Hwan outside were his fellow fire fighters, their faces plastered with stunned, horrified looks.

Only then did Il-Hwan realize the true nature of the power flowing through his body.

Dossier #02: The One and Only Cheer

Once he was evaluated as an awakened being, Il-Hwan sank into deep thought.

A magic beast had caused that fire. "If I become a hunter," he though, "maybe I can stop dungeon breaks before they even happen."

He hoped that his power could be used to save even more people.

The conviction to prevent disasters had taken root deep in his heart long before he had become a fire fighter.

But Il-Hwan soon ran into opposition: even those who had cheered him on to become a firefighter fiercely opposed his declaration that he would become a hunter.

They reminded him how dangerous the life of a hunter was, how many hunters were injured or killed daily fighting magic beasts.

The people's opposition relentlessly chipped away at his conviction.

Amidst a sea of nay-sayers, only one person supported him: his wife.

Late at night, she approached Il-Hwan while he was deep in thought.

She took his hand, speaking softly to him.

"Do what you want to do."

That strengthened Il-Hwan's resolve: her voice alone.

Even if he had no other support but his wife's, she was enough.

With her encouragement taken to heart, he became a hunter, determined to save even more people.

Dossier #03: First Raid

Thanks to his firefighting experience, Il-Hwan was able to join a relatively large guild when he became a hunter.

But their first raid together made it painfully clear what the job was truly like.

His lungs stained for air in the heart of the dungeon.

His whole body tingled and his head felt like it was on fire.

The screams of hunters and magic beasts mingled around him, battering his eardrums.

The dungeon was unlike any of the fires he had fought.

The weapons of the magic beasts, the malice within them...

the fear of that malice being directed at him...

Even in the face of such fear, he didn't stop.

He was driven forward by the knowledge that if he fell, those behind him would be in mortal peril.

How many swings had he made? How many attacks had he blocked?

After pushing relentlessly through the dungeon, the team finally defeated the boss.

He hoped this dungeon run had saved someone.

Il-Hwan let out a sigh of relief.

After exiting the dungeon and catching their breath, the guild master spoke while looking at them.

"Seven had fallen. I'd still call this a success."

Seven. The number sank coldly in Il-Hwan's chest.

Seven people had died in a single raid. That fact weighed heavily on his heart.

Dossier #04: A Pledge for Others

After finishing the raid and returning home.

Il-Hwan sank into thought. Seven lives had been lost in exchange for that raid.

Could it truly be called a success?

No way.

If there had been a better plan, if the instructions had been clearer, the damage could have been minimized.

Perhaps lives needn't be lost at all.

How could the damage be minimized? Fires and dungeons had much in common: they're dangerous, you shouldn't approach recklessly, and they needed to be controlled early.

Perhaps his knowledge from his firefighting days could help.

Surely there was something he could do.

His overall goal hadn't changed: save as many people as possible.

Only now, some of those were hunters themselves.

Dossier #05: Final Resolve

From that day on, his name became well-known among hunter circles.

He was the first to enter the dungeon, surveying it and assessing the dangers within.

Through thorough investigation, he devised flawless plans, through his wide field of vision, he could give precise instructions.

Thanks to his efforts, countless lives were saved.

As his fame grew, he began to accumulate a following: those whose lives had been saved by Il-Hwan and those who shared his desire to rescue others.

Together with them, he always plunged into the most dangerous parts of the dungeon.

Il-Hwan hadn't spent time with his son in a while, so he took him to an amusement park.

They were enjoying themselves when screams echoed from one side of the park.

It was a Dungeon Break. Magic beasts had broken loose inside and were charging toward the people.

Il-Hwan evacuated his son to protect the people, then grabbed his weapon and ran toward the scene.

Numerous hunters had already gathered there, ready to tackle the dungeon.

Even with his son there, Il-Hwan threw himself into the raid without hesitation to tackle the dungeon break, for the sake of his mission to save lives.

That was the last time his son saw his father.
