1. Slave and Master, before the fight
62 linesDue to the physical properties of Silver Cores, investigators should pay attention while using Silver Core products in the following aspects...
As... pe... zZZZ...
Agrippa's head nods forward as she dozes off, until it slam down onto the desk, leaving an angry red mark on her forehead.
Ouch! @2, why do I have to transcribe these stupid books here!
She jerks awake, pressing a hand to the throbbing spot and grimaces at her notebook's slanted, ink-smudged mistakes.
Those misspelled words remind her of the distain in Doll's eyes and those annoying punishment assignments, once again, Agrippa scored single digits on the exam.
So what if I'm failing the class? I don't give a flying f@2k!
Agrippa snatches up her notebook, fingers itching to rip it to shreds. The memory of Doll's punishments flashes through her mind, and she freezes. With a growl, she jams the notebook's corner between her teeth and bites down hard.
Eat shit and die, a@2h@2e! The homework can burn and take this garbage school with it!
Yet the gnawing doesn't lessen her unfinished homework by a bit. It even makes her feel slightly hungry after being locked in the dorm for so long.
Yesterday, she'd raided Aigis's dormitory after trashing her own supplies yet again... Only to end up in a fist fight with Jenkin who came to investigate the noise.
The verdict came down hard: Agrippa ended up with double transcribing punishment and a three-day grounding.
Barbecue, chicken wings, fries, borscht, and crispy buttered bread...
Agrippa recalls the only thing she loves about this school: The delicious free dishes in Mythag's cafeteria. She finally shakes her head, slams the table, and stands up.
To hell with the grounding! They can't trap me here! I can go wherever I want!
Under cover of darkness, Agrippa pries open the door with practiced ease. A quick scan confirms the coast is clear. She bolts for the kitchen.
I wonder what's left in the kitchen at this time... Huh? Who's that? They're even guarding the kitchen now? How stingy do they even get?
Agrippa immediately ducks behind the corner, then pokes her head out cautiously to scan the shadowy figure by the kitchen door.
That person... He looks familiar, with that mop-like hair... Uvhash?!
The fear of being discovered fades. Agrippa jumps out of the corner, shoulders squared and hands locked on her hips, her voice sharp with domineering confidence.
Ha! And here I was wondering who it was. Turns out it's my slave!
What, sneaking around at night just to steal scraps? That's your lowly slave nature!
Huh?
Uvhash doesn't flinch. He'd sensed her minutes ago. His hands never pause, stubbornly fiddling with something.
What? You got a new side gig at the cafeteria?
Slave! How dare you speak to your master like that!
Don't you think you can disrespect me just because I allowed you to kill me! That was my noble choice...
Hey! Eyes on me! What are you doing? Stop ignoring m...
SHUT UP!
Uvhash shouts irritably, startling the approaching Agrippa.
What are you yelling about?! Are you crazy... Uh, why are there so many locks on this door?
On the kitchen's unremarkable small door, layers upon stacks of locks hang, as if the kitchen's owner is angrily guarding against some habitual offender.
Ah! So that's why you're squatting there, you can't even get in! HAHAHAHA!! Been sneaking bites every day and <i>still</i> failing?
Not every day, mind you. I've been coming here every TWO days.
Is that any different? Doll should've punished you too! Get your sleazy ass locked up!
Uvhash completely ignores her, already back to wrestling with the locks. Agrippa stomps her foot, wanting to turn around and leave.
<i>She should leave, she WILL leave...</i> but her traitorous stomach growls in protest.
She considers going back to face those endless transcriptions and decides to stay with this despised slave... for now.
Move aside, stupid! It's just a few locks. You can't just pull it open. We gotta work it...
Before Agrippa can pick the locks with her spider appendages, Uvhash yanks off the entire set of locks along with the doorknob with a roar.
...out.
Uvhash reaches his hand into the large hole, easily unlocking the door from the inside, then kicks the door panel down and strides into the kitchen.
You uncultured slave... Hey, wait for me!
Whoa. No wonder you keep breaking in. This place is packed!
Agrippa, who's never set foot in a kitchen in her two lifetimes, widens her eyes in excitement. She darts between overflowing baskets of ingredients with frantic glee.
I've seen them before! Cherry tomatoes! Carrots! They keep putting these in my meat!
What is this giant green melon? It's even bigger than my head! Whatever, it looks nasty anyway.
All veggies? Where did they hide the meat... Uvhash? What are you doing?
Hmph, stupid woman.
After breaking through the kitchen blockade once again, Uvhash is in a great mood. He skillfully opens the weak little lock on the fridge and waves to Agrippa.
Their heads crowd around the fridge. Uvhash yanks it open with pride like revealing the entrance to a brave new world.
Is that... VOLCANIC RIBS!!
Various meats stand stacked in neat rows. At the center rests a full plate of seasoned ribs, its spice-rich aroma curling into the air.
Huh? Why are there so much leftover today? I used to only find raw meat...
Uvhash stares at the ribs in momentary confusion, but Agrippa's already snatching the plate, her eyes glittering.
What are you waiting for, slave? Hurry up and make a fire!
Uvhash snorts and decides to lecture her about how to use ovens. Then he spots a strange button lighting up where the plate had been.
Huh?
In an instant, the floor beneath them splits, revealing a dark, gaping hole.
Waaaaahhhh...
The delicious rib slips from Agrippa's grasp.
The two crash into the pit with a echoing thud. The floor snaps shut above them. Darkness. Silence. Two pairs of wide eyes stare at each other.
2. Might of the Romans, before the fight
95 linesUnder Uvhash's full-force strike, the floor above them doesn't even scratch, instead, silver patterns light up elegantly across its surface.
...Tsk.
What? What happened? Why is there a big pit here?
I see... It was a trap! A despicable bait, for YOU, Uvhash! You idiot!!
Agrippa, slow to realize their predicament, starts clamoring; seeing Uvhash's attacks prove utterly ineffective, her anger boils over.
You damned slave! Useless! WORTHLESS! Now I'm trapped with your stinking...
They'll fling this trap open tomorrow and go, <i>'Look! The kitchen thieves! Two absolute morons!'</i>
Then our names will end up on the bulletin board for ALL of Mythag to laugh at...
My honor, my dignity, everything is ruined! They'll probably chain me to a desk with mountains of homework...
AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET TO EAT! NOT ONE STUPID CARROT!!
Amid Agrippa's incessant complaints, Uvhash tries every possible method of attack.
Yet the two floorboards that had pressed together now seem reforged, not even a hairline gap remains.
Agrippa recalls her life since arriving at Mythag: those incomprehensible tomes filled with celestial knowledge.
The transformed buildings, alien customs, and strange inventions, the disappearance of slavery and forced independence of life.
Everything once taken for granted has become a cycle of trouble, punishment, and more trouble, met with others' sighs, disdain, and hostility.
The world has completely changed overnight. She barely clings to her dignity as a slave owner while feeling increasingly out of place.
Like a fish stranded on a beach, unable to ride the new tides.
Now the long-absent phantom hunger envelops her again.
This emptiness isn't from survival's pain, but the vast grievance of having lost everything.
I just wanted some meat...
Her exploring offsprings return empty-handed. Agrippa collapses, hugging her knees, curling into despair.
Rome is finished, and so am I. Not even dust remains of our world... All devoured by this wretched new age.
I've had enough! I'm tired of this life, tired of this damn place. I don't belong here. Neither do you.
Uvhash! We're never going back to Rome! That golden place, with its flames and flowers and roaring crowds... It's all gone!
Uvhash has been sitting nonchalantly in the corner, ready to wait until dawn, but Agrippa's curses are getting too loud to tune out.
He digs at his ear, frowning as he cuts Agrippa off.
You're yelling my ears off. So what?
...Huh?
I said. So what if we're not going back?
Agrippa lifts her head incredulously and unleashes a torrent of curses.
You were supposed to be a warrior! Uvhash! Where's that bloodthirsty killer who lived for battle? Where is he?!
What, don't tell me you like this? Being scolded, obeying, groveling like some tamed animal?
Tsk...
Stop grinning, you spineless! Say something!
Yeah. Of course I still love killing. But here? I get what Rome never gave me.
?!
She glares wide-eyed, staring at him with eyes full of betryal.
In Rome, we all drowned in desires, kings, slaves, you and I.
I slaughtered armies for greedy kings. And what did I get? A thousand years chained underground.
A thousand years later, they unleashed me... I had a feast, only to die again from that thirst.
These people here worship something called "reason". Weak. Always hesitating. Always obedient.
I'll never understand them. Why cage themselves with rules?
But they can't cage me. If I want blood tonight, I'll take it.
Mythag... They give me endless fights. Enemies who don't run. A hunt that never ends...
Yeah, we're locked in here. For now. When sunlight hits those lazy bastards' dorm tomorrow morning, they'll find me gone.
Then watch them scramble like ants on a hot pan, until they're crawling to open this damn door themselves.
See? This so-called new era can't do anything to us.
Agrippa's angry expression freezes as she sees Uvhash relaxed in the corner with his legs crossed. She suddenly understands the precious "reassurance" this place offers.
She remembers falling asleep peacefully at night here, free from betrayal's fear.
The nightmare that once trapped her in the Maze... She hasn't recalled it in ages.
But the sight of this arrogant slave still makes Agrippa feel a peculiar itch at her teeth's roots.
Don't make me laugh. All that talk just to admit you traded Rome for a new master's boots to lick!
Make me a slave, a weapon... Whatever. They give me blood. Endless blood. So I'll let them have their rules.
As for YOUR rules... They've been dead and buried as long as Rome.
Even if we returned to Rome now, monsters like you would be hunted on sight. Guess you should thank this place, no?
You! Now I see, you've turned into a coward!
You're just scared of being used up and tossed aside! You'd rather be a pamperd lapdog!
Scared? I've never been scared of anything. No regrets.
I won't be like a certain idiot, clinging to ragged pride while fighting a world that's already moved on.
Who are you calling an idiot?!
Agrippa lets out a furious screech. Her hair stands on end as pale chitinous eggs burst from her body, appendages stamping wildly before charging at Uvhash.
Despicable slave, I'll make you pay for your insolence!
What, should I suck you dry again to prove my point?
UVHASH!!
In the cramped space, venom and blood spikes fly as limbs and spider appendages clash, a chaotic struggle where neither is willing to yield.
During their commotion, some stray attack connects, and the silver-glowing door above suddenly flickers.
Wait... did that door panel just flicker?
Agrippa stops abruptly. She looks up as Uvhash crashes headfirst into the still-unmoved door panel with a thud.
Huh?
Agrippa pushes Uvhash aside like a stack of potatoes. She then presses against the door, studying it... Until she spots something familiar in the silver patterns.
These lines... it looks like the Silver Core Mechanism Circuit in that textbook?
What corn? Some kind of snack?
The homework's contents flood her mind. Before an even dumber student, her barren knowledge finally has its moment.
Your tiny brain won't understand anyway. Look, this mechanism is made from Silver Core, and because of the... something something special propeties, its core is never far from the mechanism itself.
These constructs are ridiculously precise. We must've hit the exact sweet spot to make the door react in the first place.
If we deliver enough concentrated force to the core's position, we can overload the whole mechanism!
I'm not listening to all that. We just need to hit that thing hard, right? Where is it?
Let's see... judging by the circuit flow... wait, no, that can't be right. Unless... does it loop back here?
Ugh, it's probably embedded in this wall section.
Never mind, I've never passed those exams... I'm probably wrong anyway.
Agrippa hangs her head in despair, shocked when the slave doesn't mock her. Instead, Uvhash simply nods in approval.
You've learned a lot at this place, I can tell.
Uvhash turns, staring into that invisible spot on the wall like it's his greatest foe.
Like a battle god returned, blood-crafted spears manifest one by one around him, glowing crimson in the darkness.
This kitchen shall witness the power of Rome's greatest warrior!
With manic laughter, his all-out strike hits true. A faint click sounds as the invincible door finally dims.
The silver light flickers out. Agrippa looks up in surprise, then laughs uproariously.
Hah! Who cares about Silver Core nonsense? This kitchen is mine to conqueor!
They exchange a glance, snort simultaneously, and together smash through the now-powerless door panel.
Ungrateful slave! As your master, I claim first rights to everything here!
Try it. See if you could open that door without me. First to breach keeps the spoils.
In their fighting frenzy, the long-restrained pair quickly clear the kitchen of meat before swaggering away.
Their names will not appear on the campus bulletin board, Rome's glory remains intact this night.
Lo and behold, another kitchen falls to Roman might.
Only the head chef, confidently walking into the kitchen the next day, let out a roar that echoed across the campus.
