1. Prophecy, before the fight

126 lines

"Within the phantasmal dream of the throne, the King hearkens to the revelation of the Divine."

"The storm of Lemuria shall be stilled. The abyss of Lemuria shall be no more."

"The King shall shelter His righteous people, and He shall bring forth the Divine Realm. Gentle waters shall flow, anointing the earth, giving life unto every blade and every tree."

BOOM...

Young Miryam

Ah!

Thunder cracks violently above the island. Beneath the rubble, a small form shivers.

Not far off, the ocean rages with such fury that it nearly swallows the thunder itself. Like a helpless, withered leaf adrift upon the boundless sea, the great isle of Lemuria trembles.

Though the violent quakes have ceased, a lingering dizziness still clouds her senses.

Her house has almost fully collapsed, debris pinning her into a cramped crevice amidst the rubble. Torrential rain pours through the gaps between stones, soaking her to the bone.

Above her, massive fragments of wreckage hang suspended, propped up only by a single, crack-riddled pillar, shuddering beneath the rain's assault.

Young Miryam

O... O revered King...

Please... save Your faithful follower...

Her eyes fixed on the precarious rubble overhead, she curls deeper into the corner, fingers knit tightly together, pressed to her chest as she prays to her king.

Tempests. Thunder. Earthquakes. Tsunamis.

In Lemuria, the people sleep alongside Cataclysms; prayer is the first thing they learn upon waking.

Young Miryam

You are the Divine Envoy, the faith of the people of Lemuria... I devote to You everything that I have...

I beg of You to help me... save me...

Her father has told her that their god and their king will deliver Lemuria's people. She does not know what a god is, nor what a king is. Still, she cries out again and again.

God still does not appear; God has never appeared before her. And yet, apart from prayer, there is nothing she can do.

The cracks in the stone pillar widen. It can no longer bear the crushing weight above.

Young Miryam

O Lord... please save me...

Miryam remembers when her mother's body was dug out from under the ruins, that dirty, broken body.

In those last despairing moments, was she too this cold? This terrified? This utterly forsaken?

Her tears melt helplessly into the rain. Her voice grows weaker, trembling along with her body...

BOOM...

Young Miryam

Aaah!!

???

Miryam!

The stone pillar shatters. Just before the massive slab plummets down, a familiar figure rushes in, pulling Miryam into his embrace.

Young Miryam

F-Father...!

Miryam slowly lowers the arm she has instinctively raised to shield her eyes.

Young Miryam

Waaahhhh...

She clings to him, tightly embracing his familiar figure.

Enos

Don't be afraid, Miryam. Don't be afraid. I'm here.

Agh... careful, child... mind the shoulder...

Young Miryam

You're bleeding?!

Stones crash, gravel sprays. He stands between her and the collapsing debris, his weather-beaten, sun-darkened skin gashed by countless fresh wounds from rubble and tile.

His hands, already rough from a lifetime of labor, are mangled and bloody from frantically clawing through the rubble.

Rain falls, washing over the man's body, his fresh blood staining the broken ground a dark crimson.

Young Miryam

Father... I... It's all my fault you're hurt...

A broad, calloused hand rests gently on her head, softly stroking her hair.

Enos

Silly child, what are you saying? As long as you are safe, no wound could ever truly hurt me.

Thank goodness, thank goodness... I made it in time after all...

Thank You, Lord! Thank You for protecting my family...

Young Miryam

But it is you, father... you are the one who protected me...

Enos

We of Lemuria endure these calamities by the King's grace alone. Only through devout worship of the King may one protect his family. You are still young; when you are older, you will understand.

Enos smiles, patting her gently on the head. He leads Miryam in a devout bow, facing the direction of the temple.

Now come, recite with me. For the lost, the Lord shall guide ...

...

...For the yearning, the Lord shall answer. ...

Enos

Miryam?

...For the devout, the Lord shall embrace...

Enos

Miryam? Have you fallen asleep?

Miryam

Ah, father! I'm sorry... I was just thinking of something from the past...

Enos

Miryam, are you sure you want to become an apprentice priestess?

Miryam

Yes, father.

Enos

That's good, that's good. You seem distant, and you seldom speak of these matters, I feared you had no interest...

When you said you wished to contend for the priesthood the other day, I was overjoyed. My daughter has grown up...

Since we're here, let's listen carefully to what the priest has to say. The King is the one closest to God; He sees everything. Those who are not devout cannot receive His Holiness.

Miryam

Mm... I understand, father.

But it was never the King who watches over me, Miryam thinks, swallowing the words.

Sarah

Dad, will sister be chosen?

Enos

Of course! The city's priests all say that your sister's spiritual talent is even stronger than their own!

Not only can she become a priestess, she might even rise to High Priestess one day!

A grand honor, that... If it came to pass, your mother in heaven would surely rejoice for you...

Sarah

Ah! The priestess is coming!

At Sarah's excited shout, everyone looks forward.

The priestess, wearing a purple veil, moves slowly through the congregation, reciting prayers. She passes the young candidates ahead, before stopping before Miryam and her family.

Enos

O Lord, please hear my devout plea. Please accept my daughter, Miryam...

Her father's whispered prayer, together with the solemn majesty of the priestess, keeps Miryam from speaking further.

She lowers her head and waits. The priestess raises her hand and places it on Miryam's forehead.

Enos

Your Holiness, may I ask, my child, is she...

Her father humbly looks up to the priestess. She gives no reply, shows no expression. She has seen too many such stories before, the lowing of beasts no longer stirs even the faintest interest within her.

Those well-kept hands do not linger for even a moment. The priestess turns away and leaves with her attendants, returning to the altar.

Enos

Not chosen, then...

Miryam

Father, I'm sorry... I still haven't been any help to our family...

Enos

What are you saying, silly child? The stars have already written our fates. Was I not also deemed unworthy?

As long as you can live a healthy, happy life, Dad will be content. Priestess or not, you will always be my child.

Sarah

Dad, what about me?

Enos

Hahaha, you're both my dear daughters!

Miryam sees the disappointment in her father's eyes, yet his rough, broad hand still rests upon her head, as gentle as always.

From childhood until now, that hand has always appeared, whenever she was afraid, whenever she was lost, whenever she was sad, that same hand would always find her, stroking her head just like this, soothing her into calm.

And yet, since childhood, how many burdens has the owner of that hand endured? And what has she done to help him?

Miryam lowers her head again, hiding her reddening eyes.

Sarah

Hey, sis, look! There's an old grandpa walking onto the altar!

Enos

That robe... a purple robe!...

A worshipper eagerly pushes through the crowd, standing on tiptoe beside Enos for a better view.

Believer

Is that the High Priest? The High Priest, leaving the inner sanctum?! No one said anything about this...

An elderly figure emerges from the chamber behind the altar. His face is aged, yet his steps remain steady; his robes are impeccably kept, without a single wrinkle.

The High Priest, the sole person in all of Lemuria granted audience with the King. Save for the King himself, who holds the power to commune with God, the High Priest holds the highest station in all the land.

The old man's stern gaze sweeps across the hall. Though he speaks not a word, the once-noisy temple falls silent beneath it.

Soon, that gaze turns towards Miryam. Following a priestess's guidance, the old man comes before her and places his wrinkled hand upon her forehead.

The once-arrogant priests now stand bowed before the old man. Everything within the temple seems to still at his presence; she finds herself breathless, unable to perceive even the flow of time.

High Priest

Would you kill your father for the King?

An icy voice comes from the High Priest, shattering the frozen moment like a clap of thunder.

Miryam jerks her head up, seeing the stern, imposing face of the High Priest.

Miryam

Wh... what did you just say, Your Holiness...?

High Priest

Tell me, what is faith?

Miryam

Faith is... to offer everything to the King...

But, but my father is a devout believer. The King cares for his people; He would never ask me to...

High Priest

You should not become a priestess. You should not have been born in Lemuria. You should be exiled, or executed.

Enos

Miryam, His Holiness didn't mean it that way...

Your Holiness! Please forgive her, Miryam is just clumsy at expressing herself... we are willing to sacrifice everything for the King!...

High Priest

God has guided me here. So this must be the fate foretold by the stars... Fate. Hah.

The High Priest pays no heed to Enos and Miryam's words. Without another glance, he sighs deeply and walks back into the depths of the temple.

Soon, a priestess hurries over, her footsteps echoing in the quiet hall.

She stops before Miryam, smiles, and hands her a badge.

Priest

In seven days, bring this to the temple and join the training.

Congratulations, Miryam. You are now an apprentice priestess of Lemuria.

Enos

!!!

Sarah

Sister was chosen! Sister was chosen!

Sarah jumps around excitedly. Enos turns towards the statue above the altar, his clasped hands trembling slightly before him.

Enos

Thank you, Your Holiness, thank you!

The Lord has heard our voice... we give our deepest gratitude unto Him... gratitude...

Paya, did you hear that? Our daughter has become an apprentice priestess!

If only you could see this, you would be so happy, Paya...

Miryam stands in a daze, still not fully grasping what has just happened.

Her sister's unrestrained cheers, her father discreetly wiping away his tears, the mingled sincere and envious congratulations of the crowd.

In her palm rests a dark badge, etched with writhing tentacles and raging tempests. It lies cold and still, indifferent to the noise around it, like an aloof prophecy.

Enos

You love fish, when we return, I'll prepare a whole feast of your favorites!

I'll go tell everyone, I must share this wonderful news!

My Miryam is going to be a priestess of Lemuria!

Miryam

I'm only an apprentice still...

Enos

His Holiness, the High Priest himself, took special notice of you, that means our Miryam's gift is truly remarkable! I'm sure everything will be fine!

Miryam still does not understand what the High Priest meant, nor does she understand why she has been granted this place. She looks at her father and sister. She hasn't seen such joyful expressions on their faces in a long time.

Miryam strokes the badge, a smile appearing on her lips.

Finally, she too has brought smiles to her family, just like her father. Then let those smiles last, she thinks. Let this joy endure.

2. Fish Flesh, before the fight

65 lines

Sizzle...

Fresh fish hits the pan, and a delightful sound and fragrance waft from their modest kitchen.

These are his daughters' favorite dishes. Enos has been preparing them for over a decade, he can measure every spice perfectly with his eyes closed.

Miryam

Ugh...

Sarah

Sis, is your stomach acting up again? You always feel queasy at the smell of fish...

Outside the kitchen, Sarah pats Miryam's back, shaking her head and sighing.

Miryam can't help but smile at the grandmotherly look on Sarah's ten-year-old face.

Miryam

I'm fine, Sarah.

Sarah

Sis, fish is so good. Why don't you like it?

Miryam

Maybe I had too much of it as a child. Maybe I just can't stand that fishy smell. Or maybe...

Sarah, I never told you how Mom died, did I?

Sarah shakes her head, nestling quietly into Miryam's arms to listen.

Miryam

You had just been born, and Mom was bedridden with illness. When the rocks came down from the mountain, she couldn't get away in time.

That day the wind was fierce. Fish fell from the sky, landing all over her body.

Her eyes were wide open, bulging, just like those fish...

Miryam doesn't go on, and Sarah doesn't ask. Sarah snuggles tightly against her, gently patting her back.

Sarah

But if you hate it, why not just tell Dad?

When I don't like something, I just say so.

Miryam

After Mom died, Dad raised us on his own. He's had a hard life.

And fish is the cheapest food in Lemuria.

I can't do anything... I can't help our family at all. The one thing I can do is not be a burden...

Sarah, you have to remember, when you grow up, take good care of Dad, okay?

Sarah

Okay! But sis, when you said you wanted to be a priestess, was that the same as saying you like fish?

Enos

Time to eat! My little princesses, the last dish is ready!

Their father's voice comes from the kitchen, cutting off Sarah's question. Miryam smiles and changes the subject.

Miryam

Sarah, don't tell anyone what I just said, okay?

Sarah

I know! Sarah won't cause any trouble for sis or daddy!

Miryam smiles and pats Sarah's head, leading her toward the kitchen to welcome the feast their father has prepared.

Soon, fish dishes of every kind cover their small table.

Enos

While you two were out shopping, I told the folks in town. I even wrote to the relatives who live far away, in a few days they'll know too.

All the aunties and uncles who watched you grow up are so happy for you. They sent over so much food and drink.

And the town priest! Once he heard you'd been chosen by the High Priest himself, he came right up to me. So polite!

Miryam

It's not a big deal... you don't need to tell so many people...

Sarah

It IS a big deal! If you become a priestess, you'll earn lots and lots of money, and you can even hire someone to sweep the floor for me...

Enos

Don't say such things, Sarah. The priesthood is a sacred calling, one does not take it up for such reasons.

Sarah

Then what does a priestess do?

Enos

The duty of a priestess... now that goes back a very long time. It's a story every Lemurian ought to know.

Enos lifts Sarah into his arms, sets her on his lap, and softly strokes her head.

Enos

Our land of Lemuria boasts a glorious history, a shining civilization. The power of God protects us, granting everlasting happiness and peace.

There are no Cataclysms here, no disease. Everyone enjoys endless food and fine wine. Even the departed, by God's grace, may reunite with the living.

But at some point, our people could no longer hear the voice of God. The Cataclysms grew more and more frequent...

Our country is surrounded by boundless seas, no one has ever been able to leave. Only God can change this.

And our King is the only one who can commune with God. The King hears the oracles, and will once more bring us His blessings.

When that time comes, all Cataclysms will cease, the departed will return to life, and we will live on this land in eternal peace... Lemuria will once again be the perfect Divine Realm!

His adam's apple bobs in excitement as he draws his hopeful gaze back from the direction of the temple.

Enos

However, His power is not limitless. He requires the help of His devotees. Thus those with strong spiritual power are chosen as priests, to convey His will and aid in His design.

Mundane mortals like me have no talent for such great things... I could only watch helplessly as your mother...

Forget it, forget it. Today is a good day, let's celebrate for my daughter and not talk of that.

He wipes the wetness from the corners of his eyes. The next moment, his expression becomes a deliberately warm grin, his hands patting his two daughters' heads.

Enos

Become a priestess. Aid our King. Bring Lemuria salvation. It is the greatest honor of all.

Thank the King for granting our humble family such an opportunity...

Enos raises his wineglass. The turbid liquid swirls inside. Miryam can smell the thick, pungent reek of cheap spirits cutting through the dust in the air.

The drink favored by the poor of Lemuria. Cheap and strong. Brief solace at a low cost.

Impurities in the alcohol cause severe headaches the next day. But hangovers and spasms of pain are gifts to the destitute, it is almost a kind of blessing.

He drinks it all in one gulp.

Enos

Sarah, your father may be no one of consequence, but your sister is the pride of our whole family!

Here, Miryam, your favorite fried fish fillet. Old Ona just caught it today! When I told him your good news, he set it aside for me himself.

I don't want to put too much pressure on you. Just follow your heart. I know you can do it!

I only hope you can take good care of yourself out there. If anything upsets you, write to me.

Tomorrow you leave home. Who knows when you'll next eat your father's fish...

A heaped plate of fish is set before Miryam. Golden batter crisps its skin. A hot, rich aroma rises.

Her sister is smiling. Her father is smiling too, tears welling in his eyes. Through Miryam's vision, blurred by the rising steam, her mother's silhouette seems to sit nearby as well, a smile spreading across her face.

Her clothes are ragged, her body a broken mess. Her eyes are still bulging, wide open, sharing an overwhelming likeness to the fish eyes on the plate.

Miryam

I will become a priestess... I won't let you down, Father.

Miryam slices into the fish, takes a bite. Its flavor bursts in her mouth, forcing a smile to her cheek.

3. Praying in the Deep, before the fight

100 lines

A low hum, echoing with ancient mysteries, breaks the solemn silence.

Two tremendous slate doors, etched with intricate carvings, slide open. Pure, formless darkness waits within, devouring the outside light.

The darkness offers its invitation to all who meet its gaze.

Priest

The outer temple is open to ordinary worshippers; only those fit to become priests may pass into here.

Welcome to the inner sanctum, faithful. Welcome to our King's residence.

A gust of wind greets them from the dim sanctum. The wild scent of the deep sea surrounds them.

As the apprentices follow the priestess into the inner sanctum, the darkness strangely recedes. Light from nowhere pours down, illuminating the seemingly endless cobblestone path.

Beside the path lie two massive pools. Miryam approaches one of them and peeks inside.

Swish...

Fishman

Mmmrrrr!!!...

A drenched creature leaps out of the water, sparse human hair plastered down its head, clinging to its fish-like face.

Its gills slightly part, its slimy, thin lips quivering, emitting muddied syllables of no discernible meaning.

Its once-human limbs are cluttered with scales, flailing wildly at the surface, reflecting the sanctum's light with a filthy sheen.

Plop, plop...

Following it, countless fish-faced creatures with identical features emerge from the pools, limbs slapping the water frantically, strange noises rasping from between their shark-like teeth.

In an instant they crowd the pool, slick gleaming skin sliding against itself. Their bulging eyes, wide, unblinking, fix on Miryam without emotion.

Miryam

Ugh...

Miryam summons all her strength to keep from throwing up.

Miryam

These are...

Deborah

Yes, these are the great pioneers! It's my first time seeing them face-to-face. So this is what they look like!

A fellow apprentice named Deborah stands beside Miryam, patting her shoulders excitedly, undeterred by it being their first meeting.

Deborah

A divine revelation, it is said, was once delivered unto our King: before Lemuria ascends to the Divine Realm, He shall use the holy blood to remake His people, granting them the strength to withstand calamities.

These pioneers bravely take that step forward for the future of Lemuria.

Once we become priestesses, it will be our duty to perform the conversion ritual. Just thinking about it, I doubt I'll sleep!

Deborah greets the fish-people joyfully, gently stroking their glossy faces.

The other apprentices also bow, paying their respects to the pioneers. Miryam stands still, watching.

Miryam

The great pioneers... Would their families agree to such a title, to distinctions like this...

Priest

The prayer hall is just ahead. Follow me, all of you.

...

The slate doors close silently, sealing off the fish people's screams and the clamor outside.

The apprentices kneel at their prayer seats, gazing toward the altar, and the grand statue behind it: a breathtaking artifact of a human form, a throne, and writhing tentacles.

The face is somewhat indistinct, the humanoid body seated between a massive throne and a myriad of tentacles, a stark contrast.

High Priest

This is the Lord's likeness.

The elder priest emerges from the right side of the statue. With a wave of his hand, he stops the apprentices as they begin to rise in salute.

High Priest

The prayers lie before you. Read them. Chant them. And, most crucial of all, believe in them.

Deborah

Your Holiness, if we accomplish these things, will we be able to aid our Lord?

The High Priest spares her an unreadable glance.

High Priest

The Lord will tell you. Now, pray.

He leaves the room, leaving only one priest and a handful of guards with the apprentices.

The light in the prayer hall dims. A faint, mysterious glow begins to manifest across the statue's surface.

Miryam picks up the prayers before her.

Miryam

Ah...

The text on the paper is not the common tongue of Lemuria. Crowded with complex hieroglyphs, it seems to possess more dimensions than the space of reality itself.

Miryam wonders whether the strange glyphs come from ancient inscriptions, or perhaps from another world entirely. Yet their meaning enters her mind unbidden, the moment her eyes meet the page.

Countless scriptures flood Miryam's mind. As their meanings unravel with overwhelming vastness, her fragile human skull strains under the weight, edging toward collapse.

Young Apprentice

My head... it hurts...

Around her, others keep collapsing to the floor. Enduring the pain, Miryam recites the prayers from the page.

Miryam

In the distant abyss where no light dares to glimmer, the great soul slumbers across the aeons...

Miryam speaks these words in ordinary Lemurian, but as she speaks, the words come alive. Letters distort like tentacles, black ink dancing in the air, until they transform into another language.

Her voice overlaps and intertwines all at once, vowels hooking onto consonants, endings merging with beginnings, just like those symbols. What comes from her throat forms a complex structure of higher dimension, as if echoing from a space-time no human mind can imagine.

...His will is woven through the vast tapestry of glowing constellations; from His throne in eternal darkness, He calls your drifting dreams home...

Miryam continues to chant with all her strength.

As her words resonate and stack upon themselves relentlessly, the reality surrounding her blurs, then dissolves.

She finds herself submerged in the deep sea. Weightless water flows in every direction, more illusion than substance.

It shimmers with silvery light. Luminous stars scatter everywhere, drifting, flickering.

Miryam feels she too has become a star. Her own faint light is being drawn somewhere. She looks toward it.

Countless lights swirl with luminous foam, chasing each other toward a distant, blurred silhouette, a silhouette of a human body, a throne, and innumerable tentacles.

Miryam

Is that... our Lord?

Snap...

He stirs upon his stone throne, as if disturbed by a sound. As he wakes, the entire illusory space dims for a moment.

Behind him, the blurred silhouette of an old man takes shape.

High Priest

You have heard her voice, my Lord.

???

The King of Lemuria still sits upon the throne. I am but a successor, you should not call me that.

High Priest

The King of Lemuria is not the one who sits upon the throne. We follow the one closest to God as our Lord.

???

I do not like that title.

High Priest

In all his long life, His Majesty heard but a single oracle. That one prophecy was enough to seat him upon the throne, and to make him the faith of his people.

The prophecies you have heard already surpass those of countless Kings before you. And yet you... are still a child.

Upon you, all of Lemuria's hope is anchored. Our King's days are numbered, and his will is already made clear. Soon, you will ascend the throne. You must grow accustomed to this title, my Lord.

The young boy leans back wearily, arguing no further.

???

To reach me, and to witness my form, on her very first prayer... is she the one the stars revealed?

High Priest

It is she. I have verified it. If the stars have not erred, she is the future of Lemuria.

???

You do not think so.

High Priest

She has talent, but her heart is divided. She cannot serve you, my Lord.

She believes neither in the prayers, nor in You, nor in the future of Lemuria. She believes only in her family.

Miryam lives in the real world. Such a soul cannot carry the destiny of Lemuria.

???

To live in the real world rather than in delusion... that is exactly what I hope for her.

Lemuria's destiny... no one should have to bear it.

High Priest

A noble wish, my Lord. But born into Lemuria, we all have our duty to bear.

None of us have a choice. Whether it is her, or me, or you, it is all the same.

???

...Tedious. I wish to rest.

He waves his hand. The old man bows, and vanishes into the infinite void.

Before sinking back into his dreams, he glances once at those who offer their light to him. An unheard sigh vanishes into the boundless void.

A heart-stopping sensation of falling, and then a sharp, stinging pain.

The pain does not last long. Miryam wakes from the void and looks around.

Those unable to read or chant the prayers have been ushered out. Of the remaining apprentices, some lie on the floor in pain, while others pray with eyes closed, blissful smiles spreading across their faces.

Deborah sits beside her, slowly opening her eyes with a smile. Seeing Miryam's state, her expression turns to concern.

Deborah

Hey, Miryam? You alright?

Miryam

My head is killing me... I was doing fine just a moment ago. Why did I suddenly get cut off? Did something go wrong...?

Deborah

It seems... you failed. The King's dream rejected you.

Miryam

But why...? I clearly saw a silhouette, how did it suddenly...

Deborah

Priests enter the King's dream through prayer to offer Him aid. To even glimpse the King's silhouette is a real achievement, only the most gifted priests can do it!

I'm not sure what went wrong either... but it was only your first time! You probably just aren't used to it yet. You'll be fine next time!

Miryam

Thank you...

Deborah

Don't mention it! Keep at it. Every priestess must master this prayer. Whether it's for ordinary worship or the conversion ritual, you need it to commune with the King.

One day, you and I will serve in the temple together as His priestesses, and we'll turn Lemuria back into the Divine Realm!

Her friend's kindness eases Miryam's weakness. As she rises to leave, she glances once more at the statue ahead. The light and shadow she saw in the spiritual realm overlap with the sculpture before her.

A vague figure sits slanted upon the throne, His face veiled by tentacles that mark His immense power.

His faint eyes seem to look past the worshippers in the room, past the massive slate doors, watching over every living soul in Lemuria.

It is hard to tell whether what is etched in those eyes is conviction, compassion, or mere weariness.

4. In the Rain, before the fight

138 lines

Several months later.

She holds a ritual dagger, looking down at the half-human, half-fish creature laid out on the stone altar.

The sound of wind, rain, and distant thunder seeps through the thick stone walls, echoing dully within the temple.

Miryam

O believer of our Lord, p-please open your heart and accept... accept our Lord's...

I'm sorry... ugh...

She bolts to the side, clutching her mouth. Stomach cramps force her to lean against the wall just to stay upright.

Deborah

Miryam, are you okay?

Miryam

I'm fine... Sorry, Deborah, I've held you up...

Deborah

You should worry about yourself first! This can't go on!

Lucky it's just practice today, with no priests watching, otherwise you'd be scolded again...

Miryam

Scolding is the least of it. If I were the priest, I'd have probably kicked myself out of the apprentice program by now.

Deborah

You know that? And you're still smiling?! It's been almost half a year, and you still can't complete the conversion ritual. This is getting dangerous!

Honestly, you learn those complex herbal theory lessons faster than anyone, why can't you handle this one ritual...?

Miryam

I'm sorry... I just can't bring myself to do something so cruel to them... I can't...

Deborah

You have such incredible talent, how could you not? As the High Priest says: pray to the King with all your heart, and forget everything else. You can do it!

Miryam

Deborah, I really... every time I see those prayers, every time I see those fish-like creatures, I think of my family.

The ones who came to protect me have always been my family, never the King...

Deborah

Shh! What nonsense are you saying?!

My Lord, please forgive Miryam. The fish-people have frightened her out of her wits... Please forgive her, please forgive her...

Deborah bows reverently toward the statue in the prayer hall, then glares at Miryam.

Deborah

You have to watch what you say! If the King hears you, He will punish you!

Miryam

Sorry... I shouldn't have said that...

Deborah

You shouldn't even think it! ... Forget it, forget it. There's no use rushing these things. We'll take it slow.

Most Lemurians care only for the King, but you seem to care more about your family. Come to think of it, I don't think you've ever talked about them.

You haven't seen them in half a year, you must miss them so much... Want to tell me about them?

Miryam

Are you sure? It might take a while, and it's just a lot of little things...

Deborah

We've got nothing else to do. You talk, I'll listen.

Miryam

Let me think where to start... Hmm. There was my father, my mother, and my younger sister.

When I was small, my mother passed away in a Cataclysm. My father raised us alone. He's a great man, he's always protected our home.

My little sister is the cutest. She's a bit scatterbrained, but she's smart, and she really understands people...

Actually, the two of you are pretty similar. Maybe I'll just take you in as another little sister today?

Deborah

Oh, you! You're really trying to take advantage of me, Miryam!

Miryam rarely speaks of this to anyone. She is hesitant at first, her speech halting, but soon her words come smooth and light.

She recounts each small memory of her family to Deborah in great detail, an unconscious smile playing across her lips, as if showing off her secret treasures.

Amid the faint sound of the thunderstorm, they walk along the long, peaceful corridor, playing and chatting as they go.

Miryam

...The day before I came to the temple, he cooked a whole table of fish for me. I pretended to love it, and I ate the whole plate. He looked so happy.

Deborah

Hahaha... if your father knew the truth, he'd be heartbroken!

Miryam

Sarah and I promised never to let him find out. When I go back, I'll have to eat his fish again... ugh, just thinking about it gives me a headache.

Deborah

A headache? You look pretty happy to me. You're suffering and enjoying it at the same time, that's what you get!

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The noise of clashing weapons and hurried footsteps tears through the inner hall. Ominous echoes interrupt their conversation.

Calm Guard

Halt!

Anxious Guard

Emergency!... Cataclysm... Southern Valley... casualties... recovery team... watch for plague...

A few words reach Miryam's ears as the guards hurry deeper into the inner sanctum. She stops dead.

Deborah

Southern Valley... Miryam, didn't you just say your home was near there...?

Miryam

Deborah, I have to go back!

Miryam nods quickly, her eyes darting around in panic.

Deborah

Are you out of your mind? It's a serious crime for an apprentice priestess to leave the temple without permission!

Don't worry, Miryam... I'm sure your family is fine...

Miryam

No, Deborah... the terrain in Southern Valley is... that's how my mother died...

I have a feeling... I need to go back!

Deborah

But... the apprentices' assembly is about to start. There's nothing I can do to help...

Ah! Miryam... you...

A heavy drowsiness overwhelms her mind, the effect of a hypnotic herb used in sacrificial rituals, one priests always carry on them.

It helps devotees seek tranquility. And it helps priests bear the weight of their sins.

Among all the apprentices, Miryam has always been the best with herbs. Deborah knows this well.

Miryam

I don't want to drag you into this. Sleep, please.

I have to go... I'm sorry, Deborah.

She gently lays Deborah in a corner where no one will notice, then turns and runs for the temple gates before the guards return.

...

Hearken unto the Lord. Submit unto the Lord.

Tempest. Gusts. Thunder.

For the devout, the Lord shall embrace.

Houses collapse. Crowds drown in rain, or in tears. Stones fall from the mountainsides, engulfing the town like toy bricks shoved down by an idle hand.

For the yearning, the Lord shall answer.

The world bleeds crimson in her eyes, the dying landscape blurred by desperation.

After running through the rain for hours, she cannot be sure she is in her hometown at all.

Why have all the familiar streets and buildings vanished?

Why are so many of the familiar neighbors gone?

She has poured every effort into reaching this place, but now her sanity screams for escape. Still, her legs drag her on, toward home.

The home that holds her countless laughs and tears. The home that has endured Cataclysm after Cataclysm, rebuilt and rebuilt again on hope.

The home now buried in ruin before her eyes.

For the suffering, the Lord shall recompense.

Amid the ruins of sharp stones and splinters, kneels the man on whom she has always relied.

His back is hunched, curving into the shape of a tattered shelter against the flapping rain.

But calamity has spared not a single scrap for that shelter. No matter how he tries, the ruthless rain soaks through his body, dripping onto the lifeless girl in his arms.

He can only stroke her face again and again with his rough hands, wiping the rainwater from her skin, feeling the warmth and color leave her under his trembling fingers.

Miryam

Sa... Sarah... no...

Miryam's throat clenches, her voice barely a murmur. She moves forward, stumbles, kneels, crawls. Her hands tremble with disbelief as they touch her sister's body.

Enos

She was asleep when it happened. You know how Sarah used to sleep, so deeply. Nothing could wake her.

She passed in peace... no fear, no pain, no lingering... nothing left for me.

I told myself the same when your mother passed away.

I could do nothing but tell myself the same, Miryam... I couldn't protect them. I couldn't...

The man thought his tears had long since dried up, but the moment he murmurs a few words, they mix with the rain once more. His pale lips quiver, perhaps from cold and exhaustion, perhaps from grief.

A series of painful coughs burst from him. Only then does Miryam notice, the flesh of his leg, of his abdomen, has parted like crepe paper. The last of his blood is seeping out.

Miryam

Father! Are... are you hurt?...

She fumbles out a bundle of herbs. Her mind beyond sorting, she presses them all to her father's wounds. Her gaze rakes the surrounding ruins, savage with hope, searching for anything that might help.

Enos

Miryam, it is no use.

Miryam

I can save you... I can save you, Father!

Enos

I have done all I could, Miryam. But it changed nothing... they are still gone. Your mother... your sister...

Wretched mortals like me amount to nothing in Lemuria, no matter what we do...

He struggles to lift his head, gazing at the collapsed mountains, at the ruins all around, at the cold, distant sky, indifferent still, after raining such ruin upon the island.

Following his gaze, Miryam looks to the mountains on either side.

Miryam

Father, that's...

Huge rocks break loose from the mountainside, ready to engulf the entire town in a second.

Several enormous tentacles stretch up from the ground, holding back the devastating cascade.

Enos lowers his head. His dimming eyes gaze upon his daughter, his sole remaining hope and pride.

Miryam

A sign from the Lord...

Enos

The Lord has protected us. I am but a worthless wretch, yet still He chose to shelter me...

You're not like your dad, Miryam. You can become a priestess, you can be our pride. Your life means something...

You can help our King save Lemuria... and bring forth the Divine Realm...

Miryam

Father... Father!!!

The blood has all but bled out from his wound. Icy rain, mingling with the crimson stream, stains Miryam's dress.

Enos holds his hunched posture still, sheltering his daughter from the unrelenting storm, even now, in death.

His body leans down slowly, as if only to embrace his daughter, to bid farewell to the day's toil and slip into the sweet slumber of night.

Miryam

Father... I... I'm sorry... I failed you...

Regret and pain surge like an endless, oppressive black fog, suffocating Miryam. She clutches her father's and her sister's bodies tightly.

The rain seems to ease. She looks up to see a black umbrella shielding her from the sky.

Miryam turns. A row of guards stands behind her, and at their center, the elder priest, robed in his sacred vestments.

Spotting a lifeline, she crawls forward on her knees toward the old man.

Miryam

Your Holiness! Your Holiness, please, save my father!

High Priest

Guards, take her away.

Miryam

I will confess my sins, all of them! But my father, he has always been the Lord's most pious believer... please save him!

High Priest

You do not understand, Miryam.

Lemuria does not care about the life of one believer, nor about your sins.

Lemuria cares only for the future foretold in dreams, the future of the Divine Realm.

You may yet be a part of that future... but the choice is yours alone.

The old priest looks up at the dying sky. His sharp gaze seems to pierce the clouds, holding silent negotiation with something distant, something beyond Miryam's understanding.

High Priest

Miryam, do you have faith in the Lord?

Miryam

I do, Your Holiness, I have faith! I am His believer... I will offer everything to Him!

High Priest

Then, would you kill your father for the Lord?

Miryam

What... I...

High Priest

Miryam. Do you have faith in Him?!

The High Priest closes the distance, his eyes fixed on her, sharp as a blade.

Miryam freezes. The question, and the tone of it, stuns her so deeply she forgets to plead for her father.

High Priest

There is a way to keep your father alive.

Miryam

Your Holiness?!!

High Priest

Now, answer me. What is faith?

Miryam

I... I don't know... Your Holiness...

High Priest

Faith is where every offering finds its due, where every meaning takes hold. Faith is the exclusion of all impure thought.

Only through faith in the Lord can you save your father. And to arrive at such faith, you must first kill him.

Miryam

Your Holiness... I don't understand...

The High Priest walks slowly toward Miryam. His eyes fix on her face, scrutinizing every flicker.

High Priest

The only chance for your father lies in the conversion ritual.

Forget your father. Forget your family. Devote yourself to the King of Lemuria. Praise Him. Obey Him. Hear His guidance, and perform the conversion ritual as every priestess does.

This is the only way to save your father, and to atone for your sins.

He stares down at Miryam's frail, crumbling figure on the ground, as if he were beholding a prophecy of destruction and rebirth, of despair and hope.

So, Miryam, are you ready to kill your father?

5. Offering to the King, before the fight

116 lines
Enos

So this is what it looks like inside the temple...

Sarah said a few days ago she misses her sister. She wanted to come and see where her sister lives.

Enos gently strokes his youngest daughter's face.

Precious herbs have briefly held his life in place. For the first time, this devout believer steps into the sacred sanctum, drawing so close to the King.

Hatred for the Cataclysms, grief for his lost daughter, fear of death, and the joy of pilgrimage, tangled emotions tear at his frail body. He leans feebly on Miryam's shoulder.

Enos

When you were a little girl, you used to come fishing with me. And when you got tired, you'd rest against me just like this on the way home.

You'd fall asleep as the boat rocked, on and on. By the time you woke, we'd be home. Your mother was carrying your sister then, and still she'd walk all that way to meet us at the road's edge.

I always told her to rest at home, but she'd never listen... Do you remember, Miryam?

Miryam

I remember, father... I remember everything.

Enos

This path... it's just like the one that led home.

Now my daughter has grown. Daddy finally has someone to lean on when he's tired...

Miryam looks at her father. The man who once stood before her like a guardian angel, who never ceased to protect her, who held the whole family up, now huddles beside her, hoary and weak.

Like an oyster disguised as solid stone, unmoving, hiding its fragile heart within, until the shell shatters at last.

Guard

We've arrived. Step down.

The wagon halts. Oil-lamp light barely touches the dim ritual chamber. A lampstand turns slowly above them, its surface etched with tentacles and watching eyes that drift back and forth across the workers below.

At the center of a blood-drawn formation rimmed with ancient glyphs, a solitary stone bed waits.

Miryam helps her father lie down on the stone altar.

Those few short steps seem to drain the last of Enos's strength. He coughs in pain, on the verge of fainting.

Miryam

It's all right, father, it's all right... You'll be well again soon...

High Priest

In this very room, you failed the ritual. Many times.

Miryam

I... I remember, Your Holiness.

High Priest

Your ritual shall continue to fail if you cannot not devote yourself wholly unto His ordinances, nor earn His sanction.

You may yet relent. I shall see to it that his death brings no pain.

Miryam

I...

High Priest

This is your destiny. Weigh it. Consider it well. Then choose.

The guards set the ritual tools and materials aside, then leave the chamber with the High Priest.

The dingy candlelight shrouds the two who remain.

Miryam kneels by the stone altar and buries her face against her father's chest.

Miryam

What should I do... father...

Enos

You're crying, my girl... what's made our little Miryam so sad?

A pair of big hands touches Miryam's head, softly stroking her hair. As they always have. As they always did, every time sorrow found her.

Miryam can no longer hold back her tears. They fall onto Enos's clammy body as her own frame shakes with sobs.

She grips her father's hand tightly, as if her grip alone could keep him at her side.

Enos

Miryam, do you hear it? Your mother's voice... calling us home for supper. And Sarah beside her, waving to us...

Miryam

I hear them... father, I do...

Enos

I told your mother we'd have fish today. Dad knows it's your favorite.

Your mother doesn't know yet, our Miryam, a priestess apprentice now. It'll surprise her when we tell her, won't it?

Soon, you'll be a priestess, won't you?

Miryam

...Yes, father... soon I'll be a priestess...

Enos

I knew it. You have a gift, child, I always knew.

Life's been hard for the Lemurians. I never loved Lemuria, child, but I couldn't leave her... because you're here. My home is here.

I can do many things, build a house, fish for a living, cook your meals... but I can't change anything.

You are different, Miryam. You will be His closest follower. You will help Him bring the Divine Realm to us...

There will be feasts beyond counting and mellow wine that smells of blooming roses. Warm breezes through whispering rain, sunlight on a vast horizon. No more disasters, no one will die of them again.

We'll have a sturdy stone house... Enos, Paya, Miryam, Sarah, all of us, together, living there happily forever.

Miryam

Yes, father... we'll meet again in the Divine Realm! Our family, all of us, together in the Divine Realm...

She wipes the tears from her face and rises slowly. Her hand finds the dagger beside the altar.

The dagger's blade curves in a strange arc, engraved with the same intricate glyphs as the prayers themselves.

Beside it, in a stone basin, the sacred blood, kindred with the God Himself, ripples faintly, glazed by a sombre and eerie sheen in the flickering candlelight.

Severe delirium has stripped Enos of most of his awareness. He gazes at Miryam with curiosity, like a newborn seeing the world for the first time.

Enos

Miryam, you've become a priestess at last... have you spoken with the King? Has He told you when the Divine Realm will come to Lemuria?

Miryam

Yes, father, I've asked Him... He told me it will be soon. Very soon.

A pale smile breaks through the tangle of tears. She steps to Enos's side, leans down, lays her hand on his cheek.

Miryam

I won't fail you, father.

The Divine Realm is almost upon us, father. Soon, our family will be together again...

Plunge...

The dagger drives deep into Enos's chest. A howl of burning agony tears free. His blood sprays wild, staining the right side of Miryam's face.

Miryam's eyes widen. She studies the wound between dagger and flesh, as if it were a masterpiece.

The blade slides across skin, parts the veins, scrapes against bone. Enos's howling does not stop, like a beast being dismembered alive.

The screaming and the blood surge through the chamber together like countless thorns, piercing Miryam's face and skin, sinking into her gut.

"Faithful devotee of our Lord, open your heart as the shell, and receive His embrace..."

Blood and tears wash down Miryam's twisted face. She chants the prayer, her hands moving faster and faster.

When the dagger at last stops, the sigils of happiness and hope are carved across Enos's body, set in his quivering flesh.

For the devout, the Lord shall embrace....

For the yearning, the Lord shall answer...

She lifts the basin of sacred blood and pours it into the sigil-shaped wounds on Enos.

The moment the sacred blood touches the sigils, it stirs to life. It swirls across Enos's body like a serpent, like something that has just felt the warmth of its prey, and the thrill of it spreads through every winding trace.

No need for Miryam's guidance; drawn by the warmth, they slip into Enos's body through the wounds.

As the blood pours in, Enos's groans grow unbearable, even as his wounds knit closed before her eyes.

At the same time, his features begin to degenerate, eyes swelling huge and protuberant, lips turning slick, the skull stretching long and flat.

Gills open along his neck. Scales push through where hair once grew, spreading across his body.

He still groans in pain, but the sound is changing, drifting into something else, a wet hissing, the breath of brine and rotting depths...

Miryam

I've done it, father... I haven't failed you, have I?

The hissing stops. The half-fish, half-human thing stares back at her blankly, huge, pale eyes bulging, every flicker of intelligence dissolved in dark water.

Miryam steps to the stone altar and caresses the creature. The thick reek of fish fills her nostrils; the slick, sticky skin moves under her hands.

The smell, the touch, once they would have sickened her. Now they comfort her more than anything else can.

Miryam

I love fish, you know. When we meet again in the Divine Realm, I'll eat the fish you cook every day...

Wait for me, father.

She bends down to the creature and kisses its slimy cheek.

...

The stone door slides open. The guards part, making way.

Steady footsteps pace slowly into the room and come to a halt behind her.

High Priest

If you wish to be converted and live alongside your father, I can grant it to you.

Miryam shakes her head, gently.

High Priest

For you, to keep your reason will be far more painful than to surrender it.

Miryam

Indeed, Your Holiness, but I am not afraid of pain...

She kneels before the High Priest.

Miryam

Please give me another chance... I will become the finest priestess in Lemuria. Allow me to prove it to you.

I will stand with you to serve our Lord, and to bring the Divine Realm to Lemuria!

High Priest

Then, would you kill your father for the Lord?

Miryam

Yes, Your Holiness. I will. I will give everything for the Lord.

This is the only way I can save my home, my father.

The Lord is my father. The Lord is my home... In Lemuria, He is the only truth.

Half of Miryam's face is stained with her father's blood, a beautiful red mask, one that will never wash away.

The High Priest's sharp gaze softens, at last, for a moment.

He gestures to the table nearby. On it lies a chalice and a set of robes.

High Priest

Drink the hydra's blood. Chant the prayer. Make your supplication unto the Lord.

If you cannot be admitted into His dream, you shall die in agony.

If you survive, put on these robes. I shall guide you to become a true priestess of Lemuria.

The old priest lets out a long, weary sigh and leaves the prayer hall, his back bent low, as though he has accomplished a daunting task, or carried out a heinous crime.

Miryam walks to the statue mechanically and picks up the chalice.

Young Miryam

You have killed your father.

A girl sits beside Miryam. The face is one she could not know better, yet it strikes her now as utterly strange.

Eighteen-year-old Miryam turns her head and watches her nine-year-old self staring up at the statue before them.

Miryam

No. I saved father... he protected us so many times. Now it's our turn to protect him.

Young Miryam

But father wouldn't want to see you like this...

Miryam

He will. He'll feel pain. He'll feel sorrow. But he'll stand with me.

Only then can I truly help Lemuria, only then can I bring the Divine Realm to him...

Young Miryam

Few people can endure so much hydra's blood. You're asking for death, aren't you?

Miryam... do you believe in the Divine Realm?

Miryam stares into the girl's eyes, as if into the eyes of some childlike god. An immeasurable, inconsolable sorrow lurks there in the nine-year-old's gaze, and floods her own.

Miryam

...What else is left for me to believe in?

Miryam smiles at the girl and raises the chalice. The statue's image drifts on the red surface, its tentacles shifting, drinking in her devotion.

Miryam

I offer everything to You. Pray, answer my longing... my Lord.

Her father's blood drips from her face, mixing into the hydra's blood in silent ripples.

Without hesitation, she tilts her head back and swallows the liquid in one draught. The reek of fish surrounds her, and the dark closes in.

6. The Priestess' Ritual, before the fight

85 lines
Middle-aged Apprentice

Looks like another heavy rain coming in... The weather just keeps getting worse.

Cataclysms of every size have grown more frequent in recent years... especially the one in Southern Valley three years ago. That one took so many lives...

Young Apprentice

True... but since the new High Priestess Ascendant took office, much has been done. Renovations of worshippers' houses, large-scale priestess selections, ritual ceremonies, all of them, organized by her.

And a public conversion ritual, that's something we've never seen before today.

Middle-aged Apprentice

I heard she's from Southern Valley. Is that true?

Young Apprentice

Yes! Three years ago she was just an apprentice. In less than a year she'd become Lemuria's youngest High Priestess Ascendant...

His Holiness's health is deteriorating, and most of his duties have been entrusted to her. Soon, perhaps, she'll be the youngest High Priestess in all of Lemuria.

Middle-aged Apprentice

She's barely in her twenties! Astonishing, isn't it...

Young Apprentice

Her story has spread to every corner of the land. They say she saw His shadow at her very first prayer, when she was still just a priestess apprentice.

Where other priestesses lie sick in bed for at least a week after drinking the hydra's blood, she walked away unharmed.

So young, so close to the Lord, so much done for Lemuria. Truly enviable.

I'd give anything to trade places with her...

Oh! Look, look, It's Her Ascendancy!

Wind breathes through the chamber. The candlelight wavers. A column of guards files out and forms a line on either side of the altar.

Miryam

Within the phantasmal dream of the throne, the King hearkens to the revelation of the Divine.

The storm of Lemuria shall be stilled. The abyss of Lemuria shall be no more.

The King shall shelter His righteous people, and He shall bring forth the Divine Realm.

Praise be unto His presence.

Everyone

Praise be unto His presence!

Her voice carries from somewhere far away, soft, yet clear as a pebble on the shore.

Under the watching gazes of the priestess apprentices, a violet figure slowly emerges from the inner temple.

Her face is veiled in pale violet mesh. Two tendrils of black mist coil behind her, like two serpents not yet formed.

The gathered apprentices can feel her eyes pass over them from the altar. The stillness behind her fluttering veil spreads with undeniable force, silencing every breath.

Miryam

His Holiness has been unwell of late. I shall instruct you in the conversion ritual today, in his stead.

Bring forth the Pioneers.

Escorted by guards, a man and his daughter are brought into the chamber.

The dingy candlelight flickers on a damp lampstand. In three years, nothing in this room has changed.

The half-conscious father is laid on the stone altar. His teenage daughter struggles and cries in the guards' grip.

The Criminal's Daughter

Priestess! Please, please, have mercy on him...

My father only stole a little... my mother died in the Cataclysm, and we had no money, that's why he stole, that's the only reason...

I'll do anything! Please, please spare my father...

Miryam

Anything... then, would you kill your father for the Lord?

The Criminal's Daughter

...Priestess?

The bewilderment on the girl's face is familiar to Miryam. Everyone passes through this stage. No one knows better than she does.

She steps forward and gently strokes the girl's head.

Miryam

Do not be afraid, devotee of our Lord.

Come. Come here.

She takes the girl's hand and guides it to her father's cheek, makes her stroke it gently.

Miryam

Tell me, do you and your father long for the Divine Realm?

The Criminal's Daughter

We... we long for the Divine Realm...

Miryam

That is well. All Lemurians should long for the Divine Realm.

There lies all that you desire. No Cataclysms. No pain... The Divine Realm should be the first and only thing we long for.

She places the ritual dagger in the girl's trembling hands, and gently closes her own hands over them.

Miryam

You are not criminals. You love one another through the bond of kin, a sincere love, surely worthy of praise. What you have done should not be called a crime.

That is why you may come here at all. You are worthy to offer your own strength for the arrival of the Divine Realm.

The Criminal's Daughter

No... Priestess, please don't punish us if we are not guilty of any crime... please, I beg of you, please show mercy...

Miryam

Punishment? No, faithful devotee of the Lord, this is not punishment. This is His offering...

Splurge...

The Criminal's Daughter

AAHHHHH!

Miryam's grip on the girl's hand tightens, forcing it down into the strike. The blade of the ritual dagger sinks to the hilt into the man's chest.

Blood splatters, covering the girl's face. The father's agonized scream and the daughter's shrill cry echo through the room.

Miryam

Do not be afraid, devoted follower. The glory of conversion will descend upon you once your father's ritual is complete.

You can still live with your father. I will pay the cost of a sober life for you both.

The dagger slides across the father's body in time with her voice. She has performed this ritual countless times over the years.

A vast happiness swells, wrapping her in ecstasy. The splattered blood, the twisted faces, these are the stairs that lead to His Divine Realm. Lemurians should embrace it in the deepest joy.

Miryam

Have faith in the Lord, as I do. Wait patiently, as I do. Soon... you and your family shall reunite in the Divine Realm.

...

Plop...

The ritual may seem long to the priestess apprentices, but for Miryam, it ends quickly.

Two half-human, half-fish creatures are flung into the pool. Miryam pauses by its edge, bends down, and touches their slippery skin gently.

The thick stench fills her lungs; the foul pool water soaks her robes; she does not care.

Deborah

The conversion of these fish-people is more thorough than ever. Your skill at the ritual grows more refined by the day, Your Ascendancy.

Miryam

Deborah, I've told you so many times. Don't call me that.

She turns and gives a warm smile to her only friend.

Deborah

Time flies. I still remember the look on your face the first time you saw those Pioneers, terrified out of your wits. And now look at you, a sublime presence in Lemuria!

His Holiness's health is failing. You might be our High Priestess by the time the new King ascends!

Miryam

It makes no difference who serves, Deborah. His Holiness will lead us, together we will give everything to the Lord. Soon, the Divine Realm will come.

The new King's coronation draws near. There is much that needs our attention. I'll be in the prayer hall...

Deborah

Miryam...

She points to Miryam's robes. Miryam looks down, and only then realizes she is covered in blood.

Miryam

Ah, sorry... I forgot. The ritual just ended.

Deborah

Miryam, are you all right?

Miryam

Me? I'm fine... why do you ask?

Deborah

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but you've seemed different ever since... it happened...

Miryam

I haven't changed. I've grown up. Everyone has to grow up sooner or later.

Do you remember our wish, Deborah? You told me we would serve as His priestesses together, that we would help bring the Divine Realm to Lemuria.

Deborah

Of course. Back then, you were just an apprentice who couldn't even get through the prayers!

Miryam

You see, I've kept all our promises. You should be happy for me, shouldn't you?

Deborah

I am happy for you, every single day! But sometimes... I see something so tired in your eyes. I'm worried...

Miryam

Don't worry, Deborah. I'm fine. I haven't felt this well in years.

She pats Deborah's shoulder, smiles, and walks toward her quarters.

The coronation ceremony will require great preparation. A busy time lies ahead.

On the way, she glances toward the new King's bedchamber, a place she has no right to enter.

Every Lemurian has heard some tale of the new King.

As their new King ascends to His throne, the Divine Realm draws nearer still. Bathed in hope, she casually hands the bloodied silk handkerchief to a guard, having wiped her face clean.

7. The Coronation, before the fight

91 lines

Toll... Toll...

A great bell tolls in the temple of Lemuria. Its low, lingering voice shakes the whole island like a divine decree.

It rolls over the waves, echoes through the valleys, wakes the people in every city and village.

Believer

Lemuria's new King... the coronation is upon us!!

Joyful cries join the chorus of bells, ringing in the ears of every soul in this vast kingdom.

Millions of Lemurians flood the streets and squares, fervent in their cries and their hope.

Perhaps the old King has abdicated. Perhaps he has passed away. Nobody knows, and nobody cares.

The long struggle against the Cataclysms has taught them not to mourn yesterday. Their eyes hold only the glory of tomorrow, shimmering in the name of their new King.

...

Outside the Temple of Lemuria.

Zealous Believer

The King! Our King!

Loyal Believer

Praise be unto the Lord! Praise be unto the Divine Realm!

The grand Temple of Lemuria rises tall as a mountain on the vast coast.

Worshippers swarm the square outside the Temple, their gazes locked on the grand shrine, lit with a dim and shifting glow.

People stand on tiptoe, peering past the clamouring crowds and the guards lined in clusters, straining for a glimpse of the new King inside the shrine.

Behind the shrine, the temple's great stone doors stand open before the worshippers, a sight granted only in such rare ceremonies.

Miryam stands at the head of the priestess ranks outside the shrine, hands clasped tightly, eyes fixed on the veil.

A vague figure leans against the throne behind the veil, seemingly still lost in dream. The crown, that singular crown, the symbol of the King, quickens Miryam's breath without her willing it.

CRACK...

Believer

AAHHH!

The sudden thunder freezes the worshippers in place. The fear of calamity runs through their veins; they look up in panic.

The sky, once veiled by clouds, grows darker still. Lightning flashes, thunder roars, and the ocean rises with waves that bring calamity and death in their shadow.

Believer

Cataclysm... it's a Cataclysm! The Cataclysm is upon us!

What if it strikes the temple... what would become of us...

Miryam

Why now... on the day of the coronation...

Could it be... our new King...

The ominous portent sets unease running through the worshippers gathered around the temple. Murmurs, then guesses, then complaints begin to ripple through the crowd.

And then, a faint sigh issues from behind the veil. A small figure rises from the throne.

Tulu

No Cataclysm shall come.

Deep within Our dream, This One has heard the divine revelation:

Today, This One has risen for the sake of Lemuria.

Today, all Cataclysms yield before Our authority.

That youthful voice is calm, yet it rings in every ear like a bell.

Believer

Is that... the new King? That's His voice!

Look! Look at the sky!

Almost the moment Tulu finishes speaking, the clouds begin to dissolve before their eyes.

The ocean's roar subsides. Sunlight breaks through and falls upon every worshipper's face.

Believer

A miracle... This is a miracle!

On the veil behind the altar, sunlight casts a clear silhouette.

A small figure steps to the edge of the veil and gently raises an arm.

Boom...

At His gesture, enormous tentacles pierce up through the ocean, the plains, the mountains, appearing before every eye in Lemuria.

A faint light emanates from each tentacle. The strands of light gradually join and weave themselves into a vast tapestry before every worshipper's eyes.

Miryam

This... this is...

Miryam's eyes widen as she watches the world before her transform.

The world changes. The mountains are no longer broken; the sea is no longer storm-tossed. Sunlight bathes a serene land, untouched by ruin.

Sarah

Sister!

A child's voice reaches Miryam's ears. She jerks her head up, and sees that familiar figure standing before her.

Miryam

Sa... Sarah? How can this be...

Sarah

Sis, it's been so long! How is it you haven't changed at all? Look at me, I've grown taller!

Paya

Miryam... are you well, there in the temple?

It's been so long since we last saw you... Mom misses you.

Miryam

Mother... mother... you're...

Miryam stares, stunned, at the two figures approaching her, while footsteps echo behind her. She turns slowly.

Enos

Ah, my priestess, returned home at last!

Miryam

Father...

Tears blur her vision. Words die in her hoarse throat.

A hand gently touches her head and softly strokes her hair.

Enos

Don't be sad, Miryam. You did it... You helped the Lord bring the Divine Realm to Lemuria!

Now we have nothing to fear. Our family will live happily, together, in the Divine Realm. Our lives, our happiness, they will never end...

Miryam

I... I did it? I did it...

Her sister runs to her and embraces her. Her mother comes to her and embraces her. Her father strokes her head and embraces her.

Embraces gather around her, in time with the rhythm of beating hearts. The touch of skin. The exchange of warmth. A reunion that refuses parting. A celebration at which no one is missing.

Her longing fulfilled, her desire answered, in that single embrace.

Tears burst from her eyes and stream down her cheeks. She raises her head.

The embrace is gone. The illusory radiance fades. She is back at her place before the temple, and before her, countless worshippers stand weeping.

The splendor of the Divine Realm, the deepest desire that lies in every worshipper's heart, now unfurls before them in scrolls of living light.

Miryam

I have seen it... I have seen it in His glory!

This is the Divine Realm... this is the Divine Realm, drawing near as He has promised!

My Lord... I have seen it!

Miryam murmurs the same words over and over as she kneels before the new King behind the veil.

Without a word of command, countless worshippers kneel behind her, a wave of utmost reverence spreads through the congregation.

Through tear-blurred eyes, countless gazes turn fervently to the altar, their hope mounting toward the small silhouette beyond the veil.

High Priest

Behold the splendor of the Divine Realm. Honor the majesty of our Lord.

I have grown old. By the Lord's command, Miryam is to receive His gracious favor. From this day, she shall ascend as High Priestess and serve our new King.

Our King.

The High Priest steps aside and lowers his voice.

High Priest

Lemuria has beheld Your majesty, my King. Now let Your glory shine upon its people. Bestow upon them hope.

He bows to Tulu, gesturing him forward.

The young new King falls silent for a moment, then steps forward.

Tulu

This One is the envoy of the divine. The new King of Lemuria.

Our reign... shall bring the Divine Realm to Lemuria.

Believer

The Lord... may the Lord protect Lemuria!

Our Lord! Praise be unto the Lord!

Praise be unto the Lord!!

Thousands of worshippers kneel. Thousands of cheers echo between the mountains and break upon the waves. Thousands of praises rise from every corner of the kingdom.

Tulu turns away, weary.

Tulu

I have spoken the words Lemuria desired to hear.

I am weary. Do not follow.

He waves a hand, halting the guards and the High Priest.

Crowned by the fervent shouts of the worshippers, the young new King walks alone into the empty temple, leaving a lonely shadow behind him.

8. The Virtue of Lies, before the fight

151 lines

Several years later.

A light drizzle has just passed; the sky soon clears, blue as polished emerald. Sunlight pours down through golden sand and warms the Lemurian children playing by the shore.

A few townsfolk sit on the stone steps overlooking the sea, singing an old joyful hymn.

The song rises over the indigo water, mingling with the cries of gulls before it reaches Miryam's ears.

Loyal Believer

Is that... Her Holiness, the High Priestess?

Excited Devotee

Your Holiness!

Spotting the violet robes, several Lemurians hurry over and gather around Miryam.

Deborah

Shh! Don't let anyone else see!

Deborah's expression makes them understand at once.

They kneel before Miryam in silence. Reverence and expectation glitter in their eyes, all of them fixed on the High Priestess.

Miryam

Faithful worshipper of the Lord, may He bless you always.

Black serpents dance behind her hem. Her hand gently touches each forehead in turn.

Excited Devotee

Praise be unto the Lord... praise be unto the High Priestess!

Urged on by her guards, the worshippers, blessed by the High Priestess, leave with overwhelming joy.

Watching them go, Deborah lets out a contented sigh.

Deborah

Since you became High Priestess, Lemuria hasn't suffered a single Cataclysm in years.

You've done so well by Lemuria. Look at the way these worshippers revere you!

Miryam

I am only the Lord's messenger. Lemurians should revere the Lord alone.

Before our King's ascension, I had never seen a Lemuria like this. I had never imagined a Lemuria like this could truly exist...

Miryam and Deborah stand together on the mossy rocks where the sea folds itself in. Vibrant fields, splendid cities, and the ancient grand temple they know so well, together form a spectacular vista before them.

When she speaks, her voice is soft and calm, but her eyes burn with a fervor surpassing any worshipper's.

Miryam

Pray for our King, Deborah... we are getting closer to the Divine Realm every day.

...

Miryam

In the distant abyss where no light dares glimmer, the great and ancient soul slumbers across the aeons...

...His will manifests through the vast weave of glowing constellations; from His throne in the eternal darkness, He calls your drifting dreams unto Himself...

Miryam kneels alone at the foot of the statue. The prayer flows from her mouth with fluent clarity, like a brook running from green hills.

The brook swirls and trickles through the room, forming an opaque curtain that separates her from reality.

The eternal void of the spirit realm greets her soul. No discomfort, anymore, after these years, only breathtaking warmth remains.

Specks of light glitter in the darkness. Threads of light unspool from each spark, like tendrils.

Where the gleaming rivers converge, a vast bright outline sears a region of everlasting translucent ivory into being, like the pale moon burning alone in an empty sky.

Miryam

Our Lord, eternal sovereign who reigns in dreams... forgive my intrusion upon Your sacred realm.

Your prophecies have brought salvation to the Lemurians. Your majesty has driven out every Cataclysm. On behalf of Your people, grant me the chance to consecrate our reverence to You...

O great King, you are the Lord's envoy, the savior of Lemuria. We will give everything for the fulfillment of prophecy and the coming of the Divine Realm.

Bestow Your guidance. Acknowledge the devotion of Your most faithful servant...

Her consciousness drifts through the veil of the spiritual realm, drawing near the statue woven from starlight. She reaches devoutly toward the beams...

Crack!...

Before her hand can touch the beams, the statue shatters. The beams collide and scatter in every direction.

A violent rush of force throws Miryam backward and knocks her to the ground.

The darkness dissipates. Miryam rises in confusion, dust thick across her sight. Uneasy with foreboding, she stuggles to make out a massive stone in the haze, fallen, somehow, through the temple roof and crashing down upon the statue of the Lord.

Miryam

No! Lord, have mercy on us! This... this is...

The fragments, once tentacles and a head, lie shattered across the floor. Only half a body remains upon the throne. Raindrops fall through the broken wall and soak the once-sacred ruins.

Miryam kneels before the broken statue in panic.

Miryam

Did... did I do something wrong? Please tell me...

High Priest

Cough... cough...

The old priest's cough echoes through the prayer hall. For a man his age, a few years can feel like decades. He stumbles across the rubble, fingers trembling as he waves away the choking dust.

Miryam

Teacher? Why have you come here alone...?

High Priest

I wished to walk alone today. It's been a long time since I last went out.

He walks to the ruined statue and slowly bows in reverence.

Miryam notices his eyes. They still hold their sharpness, but there is something behind them she cannot understand.

Bewildering, tangled, divided. A gaze like a newborn meeting a strange world, or a traitor facing the homeland he still loves, or something between the two.

Miryam

Teacher... what is happening? An omen like this... should we hold a grand sacrificial ceremony?

High Priest

Miryam, bow to the Lord and hearken unto His decree.

Miryam

Yes, teacher!

She bows in reverence. After honoring the statue, she turns to her teacher with zeal and anticipation.

High Priest

The trace of the God has vanished from This One's dream. The land of Lemuria has been forsaken by the divine.

The final hour stands at the threshold. The kingdom shall sink into the deep sea. Our civilization shall meet its end.

The Divine Realm shall never arrive.

Miryam

Teacher... what... what are you saying? These words... these are blasphemous words...

This is a test, isn't it? Rest assured, teacher, I am wholly devoted to Him! I will help Him bring the Divine Realm to Lemuria...

High Priest

These words come from His own mouth.

Before His ascension, He sensed it in dream and told me... He has searched for the God ever since. And now, at last, He sees the future clearly.

Our King cannot save Lemuria.

He turns around, his face stern, unmoved.

He looks at Miryam and watches the light go out in her eyes. He sees her frozen there, her hands, so used to the gestures of prayer, now stiff and stunned, lost without a place to rest.

Just as lost as he himself had been, when he first learned of these prophecies.

High Priest

Miryam, do you know what the most important duty of Lemuria's High Priestess is?

To listen to His prophecies? To assist Him in bringing the Divine Realm? To organize the worshippers for the ritual? No. None of these.

The most important duty of the High Priestess is deception.

Deceive the worshippers, deceive Lemuria itself. Light a false candle for them, name it hope, so they may live with less suffering until the end...

We share this secret with our King. We are His spokesmen and His accomplices. We are the sublime sinners of Lemuria...

And now, you have become one of us.

Miryam

Teacher... you mean... ha, no... no, I...

A smile, unbidden, appears on Miryam's lips.

A joke? Or some kind of test? It must be. It has to be.

He doubts me, perhaps. He has grown displeased with my devotion...

I must be more devout. I need only be more devout...

Miryam forces herself to think it. Her hands clutch the base of the broken statue, as if it were the last reed afloat in a stormy sea.

The sharp edge of the broken statue cuts her palm; blood drips unnoticed.

Beside her, the old priest shakes his head. His gaze, still tangled with emotion, lifts past the shattered statue and the thick stone slabs of the roof, reaching toward the distant sky.

High Priest

The stars foretold to me that the fate of Lemuria would pass to you. This was once my duty. Now it has become your burden...

It isn't fair to you, child. Not at all. But before the stars, before fate, before the gods... fairness is meaningless.

I cannot give you fairness, nor can I teach you anything more.

So do whatever you wish. As a victim of injustice, and a sinner of Lemuria, you have the right.

Sharpness and authority fade from the old priest's eyes. Weariness and emptiness rise in their place. Hunched and faltering, he walks out alone.

High Priest

The King has awakened. He awaits you.

I think you will wish to meet Him.

...

He gazes into the pool.

Countless slick heads rise from the water, then sink again. Rise. Sink. Filthy ripples disturb the surface.

Huge eyes bulge on both sides of each fish-like skull, rolling blankly, fixed on him as he stands above. Slack-lipped mouths open and close, murmuring syllables he cannot understand, as if trying to ask him something.

Behind him, the great stone doors slide open.

Miryam

Praise be unto the Lord... praise be unto the great Lord of Lemuria...

Tulu

That's what you always say. Such irony.

Inside the gloomy chamber, only the Crown of Lemuria still glitters. Its massive scale sits oddly upon His thin teenage body.

And yet the Crown does not seem out of place, not in the slightest. It rests upon Him as though it were part of His body.

His sleepy eyes settle on Miryam's face, eyelashes flickering, like the breath of the deep sea. A tranquil mask hides His youthful features; not a single boyish emotion shows.

Tulu

I had thought you might weep, or fall into madness, or try to kill me.

But you have remained calm. I cannot tell whether this is a blessing or a curse.

Miryam

What my teacher said... none of it is true. Is it?

Every Cataclysm has been turned aside in these recent years... Lemuria draws nearer and nearer to the Divine Realm... only one step away, only one step away, we are...

The Divine Realm shall surely come in Your name, my Lord! As Your devoted servant forever, I...

Tulu

I have searched for so long... but the God is nowhere to be found in my dreams.

Tulu lifts his gaze from Miryam's face.

Tulu

Our civilization shall perish, fated, inevitable... these were the last words of the God.

Fine weather and calm seas are only the last dawn of Lemuria.

To face this catastrophe is the punishment laid upon the King and His High Priests.

Miryam

So... so you mean... the Lemurians, all their prayers and hopes and offerings, all of it, a deception...

Everyone, from birth to death, lives within this deception. Is that what you mean, my Lord?

Tulu

Your teacher has already told you.

Miryam

I want to hear the words from Your own mouth, my Lord...

Tell me, in Your majesty, that our prayers are meaningless. Confirm to me, as one delivers a prophecy, that those Pioneers gave up their intellect, their feelings, their dignity, everything, and now lie crammed into this pool, awaiting a distant lie...

Tell me, in Your name, that the Divine Realm... will never come...

No bursting cries. No hysteria. She looks into Tulu's eyes and asks every question. Within her words, a silence unravels. Within that silence, a collapse left unspoken.

There is no thoughts or emotions in her eyes, vacant like those of the fish-people who surround her.

Like a firework guttering toward its end, yearning, burning, longing for the distant dawn with her last spark.

Tulu closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. In that moment, the eyes of Miryam, of the fish people, seems to have brought many things to his mind.

Perhaps he recalls the people who have lived in deception for generations.

Perhaps he recalls the worshippers who gave up their intellect, their feelings, their dignity, and those who offered their souls only to be twisted into something else.

Or perhaps he simply recalls that, before this deception of eternal slumber began, he too, like every Lemurian, once believed he could bring a new dawn to this land.

To offer hope to his people is the natural duty of a sovereign, the sole meaning of this deception. Then the lie shall continue.

Tulu opens his eyes and steps toward Miryam.

Tulu

I have not seen the God in a long time... but I know He is still there, deep within the dreams.

The Divine Realm awaits us still.

Miryam's head jerks up.

Miryam

But... but my teacher said...

Tulu

The Divine Realm shall not come until the downfall of Lemuria. All shall perish in this catastrophe.

Miryam

Your Majesty, what do you mean...

Tulu

... But the stars once foretold to me that Lemuria shall be reborn.

His eyes evade Miryam's. Turning away, He walks toward the throne.

Tulu

When the stars are right, Lemuria shall rise again into the world.

It is not This One who shall reawaken Lemuria. It is you.

Tulu

Miryam, High Priestess of Lemuria. One day you shall be reborn, and you shall bring back This One. You shall bring back Lemuria.

Then shall Lemuria be the Divine Realm, by This One's authority, everlasting unto eternity.

Tulu sits back upon His throne. He props his chin in his hand, leaning wearily.

He does not look at Miryam's face, at the astonishment and the struggle there. He knows she does not fully believe Him. No one can truly believe such words.

Which is crueler, lies or truth? He has pondered the question long, and still cannot find an answer.

If he has already made the wrong choice, then let it all end in wrongness.

Miryam

But... my Lord, what... what am I to do?

Tulu

Wait. Walk toward the end alongside Lemuria, until your time comes.

Miryam

How long does Lemuria have...

Tulu

Three days. In three days, Lemuria shall meet its end.

Miryam

What is your plan... my Lord?

Tulu

A grand ritual. A great ceremony. Let them chant the prayers, calling Our name. This One shall put all of Lemuria into a deep sleep.

This One shall weave them the most beautiful dream.

The old priest has said he refuses to fall asleep. He wishes to witness the sinking of Lemuria with his own eyes.

And you?

Miryam

...

...I am willing to face the end with clarity, my Lord.

Miryam leaves. Tulu slumps on the throne, staring at the empty room, the fish people, and Miryam's figure, shrouded by hestiation.

The conversation between the King and the High Priestess of Lemuria came to an end. In the countless days and nights of the millennia to come, this would be their sole meeting.

9. Dream of Lemuria, before the fight

166 lines

The howling gale drives the torrential rain down upon the worshippers crowded in the square.

It has been a long time since rain so heavy fell on Lemuria, yet the shouts and chants of the worshippers still drown out the roar of the storm.

Excited Devotee

Your Holiness! Her Holiness brings us His prophecy!

Loyal Believer

Praise be unto the Lord! Praise be unto Her Holiness!

Zealous Believer

Her Holiness shall lead us to the Divine Realm!

Zealous cheers crash toward the altar like waves.

The surging crowd reminds Miryam of the fish-people in the pool, their wide-open eyes. Rise. And sink.

She feels as though she has been plunged into salt water, every sense smothering. Images blur. Sounds tangle into noise.

The noise recedes into the background, like fish swarming around her. Blue water forms a barrier between her and them, hollow within, lit by sunlight from above, and her own voice rises through it, clear as glass.

Miryam

...In the name of Tulu, our Lord, I swear:

I am a servant of Lemuria. I am an attendant to the King.

I shall guide the people of Lemuria. I shall hear His voice. I shall obey His command.

I shall welcome the Divine Realm together with every worshipper.

CRACK...

A bolt of lightning splits the skies of Lemuria.

The crash silences the crowd.

Loyal Believer

Cataclysm... has the Cataclysms returned?

Zealous Believer

Your Holiness... is this... is the Cataclysm coming?

Miryam

The Cataclysms never ceased. Lemuria has always slept alongside them.

But Lemuria has always endured, hasn't it?

Loyal Believer

Yes... yes, it has...

Zealous Believer

Your Holiness, when will the Divine Realm... come?

Miryam

Soon, my friend. Soon.

Zealous Believer

So soon?!

Miryam

Yes... very soon...

Miryam steps out from the guards' protection and approaches the altar.

Countless hands reach out, worshippers surge toward her, desperate for the blessing of Lemuria's High Priestess.

She glances around, her eyes calm, almost smiling, but the gaze itself quickly silences the clamoring worshippers.

In the clamor of the storm, she reaches out and touches one worshipper's forehead.

The worshipper clasps their hands to their chest and kneels.

Miryam

So long as you have faith in the Lord, the Lord will answer your faith...

So tell me, do you have faith in the Lord? Are you willing to give everything to the Lord?

Zealous Believer

I have faith in the Lord, Your Holiness! I am willing to give everything to the Lord!

Loyal Believer

I am the Lord's most faithful follower!

I will! Your Holiness, I will!

Miryam

Then come, chant the Lord's name with me now...

She surveys every face in the square.

In the raging storm, every soul kneels, throws their arms wide, and turns toward the throne within the temple.

Miryam

Beneath the starry firmament, above the undersea remnant, we pray to our Lord in deepest devotion:

May Your insight foresee all calamity, may Your wisdom guide Your people.

Believer

May Your insight foresee all calamity, may Your wisdom guide Your people!

Miryam

May the storms recede before Your might, may the waves bow before Your sovereignty; may the earth cease its tremors at Your command, may the land lie at peace beneath Your dominion.

May all disasters dissipate within Your tranquil dreams, may the Divine Realm arrive beneath Your shelter.

Believer

May all disasters dissipate within Your tranquil dreams!

May the Divine Realm arrive, beneath Your shelter...

Boom...

Enormous tentacles erupt from the earth beneath the temple, accompanied by a majestic roar.

Believer

It is our Lord! The Lord's miracle is upon us!!!

Worshippers raise their arms, cheering in ecstasy.

The tentacles sway gently in the storm, deepening their already-firm belief that the great Lemurian deity possesses the power to ward off every disaster.

Miryam

Our Lord, Tulu...

Believer

Our Lord, Tulu!! TULU!!!

She turns and gazes into the temple, then kneels.

In her eyes, eyes no one can see, there is no trace of priestess-pride or dignity. Only confusion.

Miryam

Hear Your worshippers' cry. Bring us the Divine Realm.

Believer

Bring us the Divine Realm!

The Lord! The Divine Realm! Hahaha... it comes!

Amid the mad shouts, the tentacles begin to dance. A silent abyssal aura spreads from them, flowing from the Temple into every inch of Lemuria, sinking into every Lemurian's senses.

Crack...

The rumbling thunder rolls on, but the cheers begin to fade. Lightning lights the lonely land of Lemuria from the sky above.

At the height of their jubilation, the worshippers' movements come to a halt, frozen in their praise and faith for the Supreme Lord, frozen in their boundless hopes and dreams for the future.

Under the heavy rain, the people of Lemuria fall into sweet dreams.

...

The stone doors close with a long, heavy sound.

A thick reek of fish fills the prayer hall. The once-spacious chamber is cramped now, unbearably so.

All the fish-people have been pulled from the pool and laid out across the floor.

The guards do not know what their High Priestess means to do, and they will never have the chance to find out.

Miryam crosses to the corner of the chamber, crouches down, and touches the nearest fishman.

Miryam

Father... is that you?

It's me. Miryam. Your daughter.

If you can hear me, answer me... please, father...

Fishman

...Mmh... mmh...

The fishman's gills flutter, its lips trembling around a meaningless whimper, no different from any other day.

Miryam moves to the second, crouches down, and touches it.

Miryam

Father, I have become the High Priestess of Lemuria. I have done more than you ever dreamed...

I haven't failed you, father... please, open your eyes. Look at me...

Its huge eyes wander aimlessly over this unfamiliar place, with no interest at all in the High Priestess before it.

She moves to the third.

Miryam

I saw the King, the King we gave everything to... but He told me Lemuria is doomed.

He said I could save Lemuria, that I could bring it back...

I can't believe His words. But if I follow my doubt instead, then I must accept that we have all been living inside a lie, that everything we did, everything I did to you... means nothing.

I don't know... I don't know... father, what should I do?

Open your eyes, look at me, father... Please talk to me, touch my head, just once more...

The fishman stares at her, blank, as if at a stalk of swaying purple seaweed.

Miryam turns to the next, then the next... she crouches at each one, touching it, kissing it.

Her teacher gave her duty; the Lord gave her hope. But the one who would listen to her fear, her despair, her grief, the one whose rough, broad hand would gently touch her head and stroke her hair, is long since lost in the dark.

She leans close to each of the fish people, whispering her desperate longing, searching for the slightest trace of him.

Is her father still alive? And if one of these fish-people is him, is it still her father at all?

She does not know. She does not care.

The sound of the heavy rain comes through the walls. In the vast prayer hall, countless fish-people lie on the floor, twitching their limbs and tail-fins.

A violet figure moves among them, searching, confiding.

The half-ruined statue sits upon its broken throne, watching her in silence.

...

CRACK...

Thunder roars above the old man's head. He pays it no mind and climbs the last stone step.

High Priest

Hah... hah...

He is too old. Climbing this mountain alone has cost him dearly.

He collapses on the barren summit, gasping for air, his lungs wheezing like a rusted windmill, groaning with age.

The rain pounds his withered body; the wind nearly throws him down. From the highest point in Lemuria, the old man gazes out over the vast island.

The sharpness, the age, all of it drains from his eyes. They are clear now, alive, curious, like a newborn's, gazing in wonder at the scarred land.

High Priest

Heh... heh... Lemuria. What a beautiful place.

What are you thinking now, my King?

You always said you had no interest in saving Lemuria, only that you were weary. And yet, for Lemuria's sake, you bound yourself to the throne, trapped inside your own dreams.

The gods have vanished, yet still you search... I was only ever a fraud. You are the true guardian of Lemuria, the greatest she has known.

One last look, my King. One last look. Lemuria... our home...

The old man raises his head, his gaze moving from the sleeping people of the island, to the churning sea on the horizon, to the merciless thunder and rain above.

He rises unsteadily, warmth dissolving in his deep eyes. His beard and robes stream in the wind, and his eyes, sharp once more, pierce the sky like blades.

High Priest

Tangled lies, tedious duty, solemn promises... to hell with them.

He flings away his cane, throws his arms wide, and embraces the storm. He roars.

High Priest

Come, Cataclysm! Come, you vile God!

I am your accomplice. Let us bury Lemuria together!

...

CRACK...

A muffled sound passes through wall after thick stone wall, echoing into the temple's bedchamber.

Tulu sits on the throne, his chin resting in one hand, His eyelids heavy with weariness.

The Lemurians have fallen into endless sleep. He has spent the last of his power to grant them a beautiful dream, a mirage of the promise he made.

Tulu

"The storm of Lemuria shall be stilled. The abyss of Lemuria shall be no more.

"The King shall shelter His righteous people, and He shall bring forth the Divine Realm...

Funny, isn't it. Is this your will... "God of Lemuria"?

He lifts his head, his gaze passing through the stone of the roof, through the driving rain and the gathering clouds, until it reaches the deep starry sky, and the dream that lies deeper still.

Tulu

You left long ago... you never cared for Lemuria at all, did you?

You too are chased, hunted, abandoned, by some higher will. You are a lost soul with no master, no different from me.

As for the Lemurians, the god they worship is merciless, the king they revere is powerless. The Divine Realm... heh. How dull.

Sorry. But this time, I am truly tired.

He slumps on the throne, his chin still resting in one hand. A deep sleep takes him.

He enters the same dream as his people. There, the sun bathes their upturned faces in a divine glow; the sweet sound of laughter drifts on a gentle breeze.

He brings Lemuria the Divine Realm it longed for. He brings Lemuria the lie it longed for.

He bids his homeland farewell with one last lie. This is his final act as King of Lemuria, the last of his power, the last of his mercy.

...

CRACK...

Rubble falls from the statue. The silent statue, once grand and splendid, now stands on the verge of collapse.

Miryam

Father, look... those are His tears. Our Lord is weeping for Lemuria.

In her arms, a fishman blinks its huge eyes, looking around blankly.

She cannot find Enos. And so every fishman is Enos.

The rhythm of the torrential rain grows impatient, roaring beyond the temple wall, while the rhythm beneath her hands stays gentle, soothing, stroking the fish-people's glistening scales. A damp stench fills every corner of the chamber.

Young Miryam

Teacher... the King... it seems they've both given up.

Miryam

I... I will not give up... I can save Lemuria. I can bring it back. He told me so Himself.

Young Miryam

Mother is gone. Sister is gone. Father... father is gone too.

I'm afraid, Miryam. I'm afraid all of it, everything we've done, will turn out to mean nothing...

Miryam

Our father was only an ordinary man. But through all those disasters, he never once gave in to fear, never once gave up.

We are the High Priestess of Lemuria. We will never give up... that is what father taught me.

She smiles, whispering softly. Tears stream down, her words dissolving into them, true or not, she no longer knows, and where the two mingle and fall onto the fishman's scales, tiny tides form, glimmering with faint light.

Boom...

The ground shakes violently beneath her. The temple's pillars struggle to hold, but the stone of the roof cracks, buckles, and shatters down upon the floor, beyond saving.

What remains of the statue breaks apart under the same savage force. The roar of storm and earthquake drums against Miryam's ears.

She closes her eyes, kneels before the ruined statue, and takes little Miryam's hand in hers.

Miryam

"Hearken unto the Lord. Submit unto the Lord. Praise be unto the Lord..."

Young Miryam

"For the suffering, the Lord shall recompense. For the wicked, the Lord shall chastise..."

The shaking will not cease. Darkness gathers beneath the vast turning clouds and blots out the sunlight; from the distant ocean, a leaning wall begins to rise, its indigo staining the whole sky...

The ocean rises like a waking giant and strides toward Lemuria.

Before the ocean, this glorious kingdom is as small, as fragile, as a single withered leaf.

Young Miryam

"...For the devout, the Lord shall embrace."

Miryam

"For the yearning, the Lord shall answer... the Lord shall... answer..."

Raging, portentous winds strike the temple as if to tear up a weed, ripping away the heavy stone and tearing at the foundations.

The sea that once crouched beneath the sky now stands upright, shutting out the last fleck of dismal light. Amid the ruins, she holds the fishman tight.

Tears flood her eyes. The stench of death surges toward her from the ocean's depths.

...

Miryam

My Lord... I give You all my devotion. I will serve You until the stars go out at the end of time...

You didn't lie to me. The Divine Realm will come, won't it... my Lord?

For the last time, she lifts her head, gazing in desperation at the place where the Lord's statue once stood.

There is no statue there. And there is no Lord.

...

BOOM,

The ocean comes for the withered leaf.

...

In the year @3 of the old calendar, Lemuria sank into the abyss. There were no survivors.

10. Dark Statue, before the fight

118 lines

In the name of @3, I call upon you, my child...

Let the embrace of family soothe your weary body; let the scent of home heal your wandering soul.

Miryam

Father...?

Consciousness and sensation slowly return to Miryam. Half-awake, she feels as though she is wrapped in warm seawater.

The voice echoes faintly; the sun's outline pierces the water, wavering, far above.

It has been a dreamless sleep. Miryam does not know how long she has slept, a day, perhaps? A week?

Slowly her mind grows clearer, knitting back into her body. Dimly, she sees a group of figures reaching down to her from the surface of the sea.

Father, mother, sister, the old priest, the King, Deborah... all of them reach out their hands to her, beckoning.

???

Wake now, and return to your family's embrace...

Miryam

Father!

She opens her eyes with a start and bursts up out of the water.

Maid

She's awake! Master Talis, she's awake!

Miryam

Where... where am I?

Miryam finds herself in a vast, opulent hall, kneeling at the center of a ritual formation.

The people around her have faces she has never seen, dressed in garments she does not recognize, shouting in excitement.

A middle-aged man stands outside the formation, watching her with both exhaustion and excitement.

Talis Ornn

It worked... I summoned a golem! A whole life of research... and at last, success!!

Miryam

Where... where is the King? This isn't Lemuria...?

The maidservant, the one who looks somehow familiar, stares at her in confusion.

Maid

Lemuria? What's that?

Talis Ornn

Some ancient civilization, probably... who knows?

Judging by her dress, she must have been someone important... all my work... it was not for nothing, after all!

His gaze on Miryam grows more and more intense. He steps toward her and reaches out to lay a hand on her forehead.

Talis Ornn

I am your Linker... now, open your eyes, and see it all...

Reality vanishes for a moment. Countless fragments of knowledge pour into Miryam's mind, drowning her like an ocean.

She sees her homeland sink. She sees the seas change, the lone island joined to a continent.

She sees new civilizations born, new nations raised, new worshippers chanting new prayers, new kings climbing new thrones.

She watches the long ages rush past, day into night into day, until Lemuria has vanished from the memory of the world without a trace.

Miryam

I have been asleep... for more than ten thousand years?

Talis Ornn

Asleep? Hahaha... no. No, you died. You died once already.

It was I who Awakened you, I, who gave you life again!

Quick, tell me, what can you do? How can you serve me?

Miryam

Lemuria... is gone. Without a trace...

Miryam pays no heed to Talis's urgent questions; she is still lost in a daze.

The changes in the world, the loss of her homeland, ten thousand years gone by, her newly woken mind cannot begin to hold it all.

The maidservant taps her own forehead and sighs.

Maid

Oh dear, Master Talis... she doesn't seem all that bright, does she?

But never mind. Once I've looked after her a while, maybe she'll...

???

AAH!

The commotion comes from somewhere far outside.

Talis Ornn

What was that?

Guard

Philistines... it's a Philistine raid! Our soldiers are all guarding the Awakening Ceremony, the coastal defense line has been breached!

Warning! Philistines! Agh...!

A guard runs, shouting as he comes. Before he can finish, a great harpoon flies in from the distance and pierces his heart.

A band of dark-skinned warriors, bare of armor, surround the hall on every side, howling strange battle cries.

Talis Ornn

Quick, Golem! Kill them! Kill them for me!

Miryam sits slumped on the floor, head bowed, lost in a daze. She does not answer.

Talis Ornn

@2! To think I've Awakened a useless b@2ch...

Philistine Captain

So this is what the inside of the Ornn family's castle looks like. Truly luxurious.

You savages! This is Ornn family land! Unless you want the Ornn army to wash this place in your blood, get out, now!

Splurge...

Talis Ornn

AAGH!!

The harpoon pierces his shoulder. He screams and clutches the wound.

Philistine Captain

Bark again, and the next one takes your eye. Then your throat.

Everyone in the room is subdued; the guards outside lie dead beneath the harpoons. The Philistines pace the room, eyeing everything with greed.

Philistine Captain

Goliath always told us: never set your sights on the Ornn castle, far too dangerous, he'd say. And now? Now we're standing right inside it.

And everything in it will soon be ours!

Beside him, another Philistine warrior eagerly raises his harpoon.

Philistine Warrior

That's right, Goliath's a coward! We should've listened to Iglenn. He's the one who should lead us, not Goliath!

Boss, once you've taken the Ornn castle, Iglenn's sure to reward you when we get back!

Talis Ornn

If I hadn't been in the middle of the Awakening Ceremony, your ambush would never have worked... you despicable savages!

Golem! I saved you! If I die, you die too! Hurry! Snap out of it and help me!

Philistine Captain

Her? You're pinning your hopes on a woman? Hahaha...

The Philistines' laughter echoes through the room. The captain shakes his head, seizes Talis by the hair, and draws a dagger.

He turns toward Miryam. A small statue dangles at his waist. Her eyes go suddenly wide.

Miryam

That statue... where did you get it?

Philistine Captain

Oh, so it talks. Thought it was a re@2rd.

Miryam

The statue. Where did it come from.

The Philistine captain lowers his knife and glances down at the statue at his waist.

The statue is carved from some ancient, dull stone, in the shape of a figure seated on a throne. Strange tentacles sprawl outward, hiding its face.

Philistine Captain

Heh... this thing? Goliath found it. Gave it to me as a reward for my courage.

I bled for him, and this is what he gives me. Some worthless trinket from who-knows-what idiot civilization.

...Hm?

The captain is still speaking when he notices the woman before him rise to her feet.

He looks her over with interest, her strange garments, the bizarre and costly ornaments she wears.

Miryam

What did you just call this statue?

Philistine Captain

I said you're as useless as trash, just like this. What, are your ears as bad as your mouth?

Philistine Warrior

Captain, quit wasting time on her. One quick cut and, AAGH!!!...

The black mist appears in an instant.

The black mist gathers into several enormous serpents that lunge, ravenous, at the Philistine warrior.

The knife jerks away from Miryam's neck, and the hand that held it is bitten clean off, blood spraying, soaking Miryam's robes.

The black serpents surge toward the Philistine and devour him before he can scream again.

Only a few scraps of flesh and a pool of blood remain on the floor.

Philistine Captain

This... what is this...

Everyone in the room freezes, stunned, doubting their own eyes.

Miryam looks down at her hands. A smile spreads slowly across her face, brighter and brighter.

She looks toward the Philistine captain, not at him, but at the statue at his belt. Tears fill her eyes.

Miryam

My King... I see You again... It was all true. Everything You told me was true...

I have truly been reborn! I have power now, greater than I ever had before!

My Lord... forgive me for ever doubting... You did not deceive me. You never deceived me...

Philistine Captain

AAGH!!!

The fearsome witch is lost in a tangle of emotion. A lifetime of raiding and slaughter has given the Philistine an animal instinct for danger, and he knows this is his only chance.

He roars, knife in hand, and charges at Miryam with everything he has.

Hiss...

The black serpent appears from nowhere, in a shape his mind cannot grasp, and drives clean through his body.

Inside the hall and out, some Philistines charge in with weapons, some scatter and flee, some fall to their knees and beg for mercy.

Miryam does not care which they choose, courage or cowardice. The black serpents appear and vanish, toying with these lowly lives, biting them, hunting them down.

Soon, not a single Philistine voice is left in the hall.

Miryam seems oblivious to all of it. She crosses to the remains on the floor and lifts the dark statue with reverence, studying it closely.

Miryam

It's a statue of Lemuria... yes... a statue of Lemuria...

So this is a golem... this is the power of a golem!!

@2@3...

Talis rises, his face flushed with excitement. He chants a spell and sweeps his hand through the air.

Miryam feels a surge of power travel down the Link toward her, but it dissolves before it can do her any real harm.

Talis Ornn

Golem, I am your Linker. I gave you life. From this day on, I am your father.

Your powers are formidable, but the moment I wish it, I can turn you back into a corpse.

Your fate is bound to mine. If I die, you cannot go on living either.

So do not entertain any foolish ideas. Devote yourself to me, and help me become head of the Ornn family.

Miryam

"Father"? "Father"... The King was right, I am the one who must bear the fate! Now I know what to do. There is so much I can do...

Rest assured, Father. Miryam will stay by your side. We will bring back the Divine Realm!

Miryam gazes at Talis with a strange, fervent look, as though her eyes pass straight through him, fixed on something far beyond his understanding.

Her gaze is scorchingly fierce as the sun, yet dark and cold as the deep sea.

Talis Ornn

What "Divine Realm"? You mean the Ornn family lands? Strange way of talking. No matter, do as you like.

The rest of those Philistines are still making free with my castle and my lands. Miryam, kill them. Show me what you can do.

Miryam

As you wish... "Father."

Miryam bows to Talis and walks out.

Blood drips from the dark statue. Behind Miryam, black serpents spread like wings and bare their sharp fangs.

11. Old Friend, before the fight

108 lines

Absolute silence. Absolute darkness.

She stands in the darkness, and no matter which way she turns, there is only the eternal Void.

Miryam feels like a star without light, her power drawing together toward some single point, a sensation achingly familiar, and full of longing.

She gazes toward it. The light surges, gathering into a blurred outline.

Miryam

My King... is it You?

The figure of gathered light sits slanted upon the throne, one hand resting at His chin, watching Miryam in silence.

Miryam

My King... I died still doubting You. That is my sin...

I do not ask for Your forgiveness... I will bear my sins! But before that, I will finish what I must!

Talis brought me back to life, he must know something. I will find a way through him to bring You back!

"When the stars are right, Lemuria shall rise again into the world."

I will bring You back. I will bring Lemuria back... That is what You told me. Rest assured, my King: I will fulfill my mission.

She gazes at the shadow, hungry for an answer.

The shadow says nothing. Light and tendrils veil His face, His expression beyond reading. He lowers His head and lets out a soft sigh.

The faint sigh breaks like thunder across the Void, and the light begins to scatter and fade.

Miryam

Your Majesty? My Lord...?

My Lord!

The bright light stings Miryam's eyes.

As her vision clears from blur to sharpness, the statue sits steady on the windowsill.

The dark stone is carved in fine detail: the King, His chin resting on one hand, reclines on a throne wreathed in tentacles, watching Miryam in silence.

The sun rises behind Him, throwing His outline into blur.

Miryam smiles and bows to the statue with devotion.

Miryam

Be patient yet a while, my Lord.

Maid

Miryam, I heard you talking in your sleep again... are you all right?

Miryam

Mm... I'm all right, Deborah.

Deborah

Why do you always talk in your sleep? I've heard it so many times now.

The maidservant steps forward and gently touches her forehead. Miryam stares back at her, blank.

Deborah

What are you staring at me for?

Miryam

I was just thinking, Deborah really is a lovely name.

Deborah

Heh heh, isn't it? A slave's child isn't supposed to have a name at all, but the old mistress was fond of me and gave me this one. I love it!

The face of that friend from her memory overlaps with the maidservant's.

Priest Deborah once helped Miryam become High Priestess; perhaps this maidservant Deborah will help her usher in the Divine Realm as well.

What a wonderful coincidence. What a sacred fate. Miryam looks at her and smiles without knowing it.

Deborah

Your forehead's not hot... so why do you seem so out of it?

If anything happens to you, Master Talis will have my head.

We may all be called maidservants, but you're worth far more than the rest of us!

Miryam

We are no different. Everyone in this world is only a servant of the Great Existence.

Deborah

Ugh, there you go rambling again...

Miryam

Deborah, these past days you've told me so much. This place is strange to me, and I'm grateful to have someone to talk to.

You are my dearest friend. You always have been.

She smiles and takes the maidservant's hand.

Miryam

Come. Master Talis will be waiting for us by now.

...

Deborah

Let me tell you something, but you absolutely mustn't tell anyone!

Miryam

Don't worry, I won't breathe a word.

You don't need to say that before every secret, you know. That's the fifth time today.

Besides, you having someone you like is hardly a secret. Half the manor already knows who he is.

Deborah

No way! I've hidden it so well... you'll never trick it out of me!

Anyway, it's serious, this... I think Master Talis is up to something.

That master of ours is a sly one, you be careful!

Miryam

Oh? Is that so?

Miryam says it lightly, her smile never wavering, not the faintest trace of surprise on her face.

Deborah

That's right! Look, he's had you kill quite a few people lately. All of them friends of the Ornn family, close with Master Talis's own father...

Every time, he plays the warmest of friends to their faces, then turns around and has you cut them all down.

I know you don't want to do these things, but there's no choice, is there? You have to do as Master Talis says.

Miryam

In this world there are no Cataclysms, but the hearts of men are more terrible than any Cataclysm.

In a world so imperfect, killing will always be with us. It is something we cannot escape.

Deborah

Ugh, I just don't get it... why do the kingdoms and the families have to keep fighting like this, when there are still so many people who can't even scrape by?

I just want to find some quiet little place someday, build a little house, and live there with Nord...

Oh no...!

Realizing she's let it slip, Deborah turns red and claps both hands over her mouth.

Miryam

It's all right. Everyone knows you're fond of that young coachman, even Master Talis has spoken to me of it.

She smiles and pats Deborah's flushed cheek.

Miryam

Don't worry, Deborah. One day there will be a perfect world.

Deborah

Really? How do you know that?

Miryam

It's true, Deborah. There are things I'll tell you in time. I will make you the first believer of this new age, the first citizen of the Divine Realm.

I will bring a perfect Divine Realm into being... that is my mission.

Talis

So, you leave me waiting here while you stroll along chatting away with Miryam. Enjoying yourselves, were you?

Talis's somber voice cuts into their conversation.

Talis

Is this how you carry out an errand, to fetch Lady Miryam?

Calling her by name, walking at her side as an equal... Guards, drag this insolent thing out and be done with it.

Deborah

Master Talis! Please, spare me... I, I only...

Miryam

The fault is mine; it has nothing to do with Deborah. I beg you, "Father," forgive her.

Talis glances at Deborah and waves a hand, impatient.

Talis

Since Miryam has spoken for you, I'll let it pass this once. There won't be a next time, no one will save you then. Now get out.

Now, my daughter, come. Come here to me...

Deborah bows to him, throws Miryam a discreet wink, and slips outside, locking the door behind her.

The moment they were alone, Talis's voice turned warm.

Talis

You've done very well these past few months. Very well indeed.

Back when I took up alchemy, my father always said I was wasting my life. But the child of a maidservant, whatever I did, he'd never approve... A maidservant. Hmph.

His grip on the hilt tightens, veins standing out, then slowly eases.

Talis

Things are different now, Miryam. With you, I have an army... no, something far stronger than that!

Miryam

We could make more golems like me. The ritual costs a great deal of spiritual power, but I can help you bear it.

Talis

I've been thinking the same. The trouble is, that silver substance isn't something you can find just anywhere.

Miryam

"Silver substance"...

Talis

I'll explain when there's time. No need to rush it for now, with you here, I have enough to do what I mean to do.

He draws a deep breath, grips his knife, and gazes out at the ocean beyond the window.

Talis

Before long it will be my father's seventieth birthday. I'll bring a gift to the seat of the Ornn family lands, to wish him long life.

Our preparations are very nearly done. When the day comes, we will present him with a most precious gift. Won't we, Miryam?

Miryam

Of course, "Father." This will be a priceless gift, for the whole of the Ornn family.

...

A few days later.

Out on the sea, a single wooden boat drifts alone.

Abisha

Lord Goliath, the tribe's ships are out of sight now.

Goliath

Good.

The giant lets his blade fall, leans back against the mast, and closes his eyes to rest.

The wounds from battle; the scheming and betrayal of his own kin once he'd fallen... It was his own carelessness. He has no one to blame.

But even he feels the weariness now.

Goliath

Heh. Iglenn, the coward. He wants me dead but fears for his good name. Exiling me under the pretext of a witch hunt, a roundabout little trick.

He'll pay for that hesitation.

Abisha

Our food and water, two, three days at most...

Goliath

Small as you are, if it comes down to it, I won't mind eating you.

Don't worry. To thank you for following me, I'll give you a quick end, in your sleep.

Abisha

Lord Goliath, I'm your follower, don't go scaring me like that...

But my lord, let's not despair just yet. Iglenn sent us to find the witch who killed our people, if we actually find her, maybe we get to live!

Goliath

Naive little thing. Iglenn isn't so merciful. There is no witch, just a story to keep the tribe in line.

And yet... now that it's come to this, part of me hopes the legend's true...

The giant opens his eyes and looks out over the boundless sea.

Goliath

If such a one truly exists... then maybe I really can do something with what's left.

12. Bloodied Banquet, before the fight

155 lines
Talis

My greetings, Father, eternal leader of the Ornn family.

Talis bows; Miryam, standing behind him, gives a slight nod to the old man in the high seat.

The old man waves impatiently.

Head of the Ornn Family

You're the eldest, you ought to set an example for the rest. Can't you even teach a servant her manners?

Hah... never mind. You wouldn't understand such things anyway.

Talis

...Father is right, of course.

A burst of hurried footsteps sounds beyond the door. A young man who looks something like Talis appears in the hall.

Second Son of the Ornn Family

Forgive me, father! I fell ill yesterday, only just got out of bed...

Head of the Ornn Family

It's all right, it's all right. Only a family gathering. Are you feeling better?

Second Son of the Ornn Family

Much better now. Oh, is my elder brother here too?

Talis smiles and bows to him.

Talis

I've only just arrived myself. I was about to present Father with my gift.

Head of the Ornn Family

Good. Now all you brothers are here.

The banquet is being made ready. But before that, there are important matters I must speak of with you all. They concern... what is to come after I am gone.

Second Son of the Ornn Family

Father! Please, don't speak like that...

The second son steps forward and takes the old man's arm. The old man pats the back of his hand gently.

Head of the Ornn Family

Let me finish. I know the state of my own health well enough. Certain things must be settled in advance, if the Ornn family is to prosper.

After tonight's banquet, I will pass the headship of the Ornn family to my second son. As for myself, I mean to enjoy a few quiet years.

Second Son of the Ornn Family

Father, but... it's so sudden. I'm not ready for this...

Head of the Ornn Family

You are the worthiest heir the Ornn family has, the noblest blood, the finest upbringing. This I promised your mother, and I will keep that promise.

Rest assured, I've already had words with the old friends of the family. Your brothers, too, will stand by you.

He glances at his other sons.

Head of the Ornn Family

Your lands remain as they are. I know the bond you share with your second brother. "Head of the family" is only a title, we are all one blood, and you must stand together.

As for you...

He lifts his head, fixing his eyes on Talis.

Head of the Ornn Family

Your lands won't change either. But you've taken on far too much of late.

You're no longer young. Hand the command of your army to your brother. You ought to do as I do, and take an easier life.

Talis

...

This is a command I'm not permitted to refuse, is that it?

The old man seems to have expected the answer, and leans back in his chair.

Head of the Ornn Family

Three days ago, I sent troops marching on your stronghold.

I have always known your ambition. But you are my son still, so I will give you one chance to choose.

I have made this choice for the lasting good of the Ornn family. I hope you will not hold it against me.

Talis

...How could I, Father? Indeed, I must thank you.

Talis lets out a smile of pure relief.

Talis

All the way here, just thinking of what I'd have to do... you cannot imagine how it tormented me...

Thank you, and thank you, my brothers, all of you. Now there is no weight left on me at all.

The old man raps on his chair, and a squad of guards bursts out from behind the curtains, surrounding Talis and Miryam.

Beside him, the second son's eyes go wide, his voice turning hoarse with strain.

Second Son of the Ornn Family

Father? What is this...?

Talis

You've thought of everything, haven't you, Father. My guards left outside the city, my weapons taken from me, you've left me without the slightest chance.

Head of the Ornn Family

A bastard whelped by a maidservant, untaught, frittering your days on that laughable alchemy and those ridiculous ambitions of yours... You have no love for this family. All you have ever wanted is power.

I have borne with you long enough. I have done my duty by you.

The soldiers draw their swords and advance. Talis waves a hand, and Miryam steps forward, black mist gathering behind her.

Head of the Ornn Family

This maidservant...?

Talis

I agree, Father. You have borne with me a little too long, perhaps.

Behold, then, the laughable fruits of my alchemy, Father!

The soldiers sense the danger and lunge at the pair.

Swish...

A snake of mist sweeps across his face. The next moment, a headless body crumples to the floor.

Guard

Wh-what is this...?

Before the other soldiers can react, serpents of black mist appear beside every one of them.

The black mist coils about their bodies, flicking its tongues, savoring them.

Guard

No... no, please...

A few wisps of black smoke linger in the air. The black serpents bite down on their prey, and scream after scream fills the room.

Soon the screams die away. The Ornn family lie collapsed on the floor, among the gore and the blood, their throats able to manage nothing but faint whimpers.

Talis

Open your eyes wide, Father. Look well at what my alchemy has wrought... my "daughter."

These past months, I've gone to every length to keep her existence hidden, all for this one day.

Here is the handsome gift I prepared for you. Do you like it, old man?

Talis watches the old man tremble, beyond speech, and smiles his satisfaction.

Talis

You were absolutely right, only with planning laid in advance can the Ornn family prosper and thrive.

Don't worry, Father. I have always loved the Ornn family dearly, and all my dear kin...

Leave the Ornn family in my hands, and I will make it prosper...

Thunk!

The sharp knife drives into the old man's withered chest. The last thing he sees is the bastard's triumphant smile.

...

Talis

Friends.

Tink, tink, tink...

A silver spoon clinks against an intricately carved crystal goblet, a clear, crisp note.

The clamor of the banquet hall falls still. Every gaze turns toward the high seat.

The bloodstains on the seat have not yet dried. Talis breathes in the lingering reek of blood and looks out, satisfied, at all the eyes fixed on him.

Talis

I know, I know, you came for my father's birthday feast. But I do thank you, truly, for coming all the same.

A fine performance would be a dreary thing indeed, with no one to watch it.

My thanks to you all for coming. Today the Ornn family is gathered to witness the most important moment of my life.

Especially my dear, dear brothers...

He rises, lifts his glass, and tips it toward the corner.

Under the watch of a squad of soldiers in full armor, Talis's younger brothers sit at a single table, fearful and silent.

Talis

With their help, you will witness this day a great moment.

This day, the history of the Ornn family changes forever.

He draws his blade and drives it into the wooden table.

Talis

I, Talis, a bastard, a baseborn child. From this day on, I am the absolute master of the Ornn family!

All of you here, you shall be my new friends. Together we will forge a mighty alliance, and every enemy will be ground to dust beneath it!

The guests may once have been friends of the old head of the family; no longer. Now they are friends only to the victor.

At Talis's lavish words, the guests raise their glasses.

Guest

To Talis!

Talis

Hahaha... to you, my friends! To our great alliance! To the bright future of the Ornn family!

Drink!

...

Glasses clink; voices rise. The guests, some in earnest and some merely playing along, melt into the banquet and become a part of it.

Miryam stands to one side, smiling, watching the guests, watching the laws of this new age.

Talis, drunk with triumph, sinks back into the high seat. He raises his glass to one and all, drinks deep, and savors this moment, the happiest of his whole life.

Talis

Miryam, to you as well... you are my pride and joy!

You have no idea what I went through to find you, to Awaken you...

Miryam

That silver substance you spoke of earlier...

Talis

Yes, exactly, the silver substance... Gold? Jewels? Hahaha, all of it worthless!

What is the silver substance? What is alchemy? Power! And before power, what is wealth? Nothing, a mere by-product of it.

Alchemy is power... and you, Miryam, you are power itself! Drink with me!

Miryam

Is it true, then... that to bring someone back, all you need is that silver substance?

Talis

Hahaha, it's not so simple as that!

Spells... a body... and...

His drunken eyes snap wide, and all at once he hisses out a vicious, soundless incantation.

Miryam

AAGH!

Miryam drops to her knees. A needling pain stabs through her mind, agony so vast she can barely stay upright.

Talis

@2! You think I don't know what's going on in that head of yours?

Calling me Father, doing my bidding... but what you really want is something else entirely, isn't it?

Miryam, I don't know what your homeland was like, but it's plain you've got no notion of what struggle really means.

Had I been a fool, I'd have been drowned in the stables at six years old, and never lived to see this day.

Like an unseen rope drawn ever tighter, the pain in Miryam's mind grows fiercer.

Talis

Strong, are you? And what of it? You are a hound, nothing more, you do as I command!

My purpose is accomplished; I've no use for you just now. Waking you again would be a nuisance, but keeping a weapon that thinks for itself is a far greater one.

So, die once more. Don't fret; I'll let you see the sun again, when I have need of you...

Talis glares at Miryam, chanting his spell. The unseen rope draws tight into a noose about Miryam's neck.

Talis jerks the noose tight...

Talis

?! What... what is this?!

The noose is still there, but Talis can no longer feel his grip on it. However he casts, the rope only lies there, unmoving.

Shhhhkkkk...

Talis

AAGGHHHH!

Sharp pain surges through Talis's body. A long, straight wound opens across his chest: fresh, as though some hand had drawn a dagger across it slowly, with reverence.

The guests in the hall fall silent at once, frozen where they stand. The guards close in, weapons leveled, but none dare come any nearer to Miryam.

Talis

This... w-what is this...?

Miryam

In my homeland, we called it the Conversion Ritual.

Once, to perform it, I had to open a body with a dagger and pour the divine blood into the wound. No longer.

They need only drink my blood, then I'll use my power, and the ritual completes itself.

Talis

Your blood... you put it in, you put it in the...

Miryam

The wine. Yes. Every one of you, here at this banquet, has already consumed it.

Miryam rises to her feet and brushes the dust from her robes.

Talis

You... you planned all of this... from the start...

Miryam

The people of this world have changed. Faith, kinship, dignity... none of it is worth anything in your eyes. I know that all too well, Talis.

No matter. I will make a better world. By helping you become head of the family, I made the Ornn family my instrument, to join me in this great and sacred work.

Your hearts are base; you were never worthy of the Divine Realm. And yet you accomplished the work of my rebirth... so this is the gift I give you in return.

Talis

We can... we can make a deal... you don't have to do this...

Miryam

A hound has no right to bargain. So I had no choice but to become your master. And now, I think I have earned it.

There is someone I mean to bring back. Tell me, how is it done?

Talis

If-if I tell you, will you let me live?

AAHH!!...

Miryam says nothing. Another deep wound opens on Talis, and the blood comes gushing out.

Talis

I'll talk! I'll talk!

In my study... in the desk... there's a book... it holds all my findings.

Everything about the golems, it's all written there!

Miryam glances at him and nods.

Miryam

I know. You're telling the truth.

You were right. The Lemurians knew nothing of such struggles.

But once you carry a sacred mission you are bound to complete... learning such things is no hard matter at all.

Talis

Y-yes, that's it... so you'll let me go now?

AAGH!!!

More wounds keep opening across him. The lines of blood and torn flesh weave together into a pattern out of some ancient civilization.

At the same moment, the same lines bloom across most of the guests and the guards. Screams and spraying blood fill every corner of the hall.

The opulent hall becomes a hell of blood and butchered flesh, ringing with the wails of the Ornn family.

Talis's face begins to twist out of shape, fish-scales surfacing across his skin. His once-piercing cries turn hoarse and muffled, tinged now with the reek of the deep sea.

Miryam

This land has rotted through... I will show them a perfect Divine Realm.

What the King said is true. The Divine Realm is coming... I know now where to find Him. Please wait a little longer... soon, we will be together.

Talis's anguished cries have all but ceased. Under Miryam's power, his change into a fish-man is even more complete than that of the old Lemurians.

She leans down and touches Talis's misshapen face, his scale-covered arms. Amid the blood and the cries filling the room, she weeps, and she smiles.

Miryam

It has been a long time, Father.

She gives the writhing fishman her deepest, most loving regards.

13. Behind the Mist, before the fight

108 lines
Goliath

@2...

With a grunt, the giant pulls the sharp arrow from his shoulder.

Poisoned blood spatters from his shoulder onto the deck, pooling into a patch of filthy black under the sun.

Goliath

Not bad, Iglenn... A Philistine... stooping to poison now...

His vision blurs, his mind going dull. He can hold on no longer, and collapses to the deck with a thunderous crash.

Young Warrior

Goliath... Goliath the giant has fallen at last!

Elder Warrior

His head is mine! Don't any of you dare fight me for it!

The Philistines who once feared Goliath's power now swarm around him: frantic, rapacious, like hyenas that have spotted a lion's carcass.

Worthless. The giant casts one last look at the dying follower beside him, a malicious grin on his lips, and closes his eyes.

For our light, we sigh. For our hope, we mourn.

Borne on this fate of exile upon the sea, we wail, we lament, we weep until no tears remain...

The visions that come before death, the giant thinks. So this is one of them.

An ancient, uncanny song reaches his ears. Through the thick mist, a woman's figure surfaces in his darkening sight.

Deborah

Oh, Miryam, that's him, the Philistine giant! They sing all kinds of legends about him along the coast...

But... is he dying?

Miryam

He won't die.

A soft, cold touch spreads from where the black serpents coil at her neck. The giant's murky, darkened eyes slowly clear.

Philistine Warrior

The witch! It's the witch!

What befell the Ornn family has spread across the seas. Now she steps from the mist of legend and stands before mortal men.

The Philistines begin to grasp what is happening. Some flee; others leap onto her small boat for a last desperate fight.

Miryam looks at the stunned giant, smiles a mysterious smile, and points into the distance. Then she pats Deborah, and they turn the boat around.

The hyenas' scrambling and struggling hold no interest for her.

The black serpents slither, hunt, bite, devour. In the thick fog over the sea, broken corpses surface one after another.

The silent slaughter ends swiftly, leaving behind a sea stained red and the giant's bewildered face.

...

Deborah

Miryam, you finally found him, so why are we leaving?

Miryam

Seeking the Lord is a sacred thing. He would not wish me to speak of it in so filthy a place.

Deborah

But you didn't say a single word to that big fellow... will he even come after you?

Goliath

Wait! Both of you, wait!

A voice pierces through the thick mist. Deborah sticks her tongue out at Miryam and slowly brings the boat to a stop.

Soon a battered wooden boat draws up before their own.

Miryam

The poison is not yet fully out of you. At the speed a Philistine boat sails, you could have rested a while before coming to find me.

Goliath

Set against a deal this important, a small wound like this is nothing.

Miryam

I never said I wanted any deal with you.

Goliath

"I have no wish to waste your time, Lady Witch. I know of Lemuria, and I believe that is why you sought me out."

Miryam

And do you know what it is I want?

Goliath

What you did to the Philistines at the Ornn manor has spread across every sea. Frankly, until now I never believed such tales.

But now you are the one who has come to me. There must be a reason for that.

Rumor has it you take great interest in those black statues. I am the one who found them, and I know what they are.

Miryam

Then tell me what you know.

Goliath

Before that, Lady Witch, perhaps we might come to an arrangement.

I have seen your great power with my own eyes... surely you can grant some of that power to me?

Miryam

I have many ways to make you talk, Philistine. What makes you think you are in any position to bargain?

Goliath

You misunderstand me, Lady Witch... You saved my life. Even if you want no deal with me, I will give you everything I know, and hold nothing back.

What I wish to trade for is not this information at all.

Miryam

What else is there that you can offer?

Goliath

My loyalty.

Miryam

I have no interest in your loyalty, Goliath.

Goliath

Is that so? I have heard how you took control of the Ornn family. Truly impressive... Lady Witch, you need hands for some great work of yours, do you not?

After all your painstaking efforts, how many people do you truly have to command? And who is there to manage things for you while you chase after what you seek?

Frankly, my lady, you are powerful. But the workings of men's hearts, the wielding of power, the true business of killing: these are not your strengths.

I do not know what this great work of yours is. But you will need my help, of that I am certain.

Accept my loyalty. It can only do you good, and no harm at all.

Miryam gazes at him in silence. After a moment, she nods.

Miryam

You have made your case well, Goliath. You have proven what you can do.

Now. Cast your blade into the deep sea.

Goliath

My blade...

Goliath glances at the great blade that has served him for years, grits his teeth, and casts it into the sea.

The boat shudders, as though something is stirring in the sea beneath them.

Miryam reaches out a hand. The great blade leaps back out of the sea, giving off a dark glow it never had before.

The massive blade settles into Miryam's hand, light as a feather between her slender fingers.

Miryam

Are you afraid of pain?

Goliath

I welcome pain, Lady Witch.

Goliath smiles and drops to one knee before Miryam.

Miryam lays the great blade against Goliath's neck.

Abisha

Lord Goliath!

Thunk...

The massive blade bites into Goliath's neck, cleaving clean through, and the blood comes spurting out.

Before anyone nearby can react, a faint purple-black light flickers at the wound on Goliath's neck.

It moves, carving an intricate, ancient pattern into his dark skin.

Goliath

Gah-!

Intense pain surges through Goliath. It does not come from the wound alone, but pours through his whole body.

Sweat rolls down the giant's forehead. He grits his teeth, his whole body shaking as he fights the pain.

Through the excruciating pain, fin-like blades sprout from Goliath's ears; his teeth grow sharp and layered, row on row; his eyes turn crimson.

Abisha

Lord Goliath... you... you're...

It is an endless process. Goliath feels as though he has endured a whole year of agony. In that long stretch of time, he dies in pain, and in pain is born again.

When Goliath's mind clears again, he finds the ritual has long since ended. He is lying face down on the deck, the sweat of his ordeal soaking the boards beneath him.

He gazes at his reflection on the water. The features of a fishman stand out plainly on his giant frame. A savage shark, laid bare before them all.

Miryam

How the fishman change takes you depends on your own potential. You have great gifts, Goliath.

Enjoy your new strength.

A surge of power he has never known floods through Goliath's body. He lifts the great blade beside him with ease and swings it at the water.

Boom...

The calm sea heaves up into massive waves, flinging the two small boats about until they pitch and rock.

Goliath

Heh heh heh... hahahaha!!!

Amid the violent rocking, Goliath roars with laughter. He turns to Miryam, red light flashing fierce in his eyes.

Goliath

Thank you, Lady Witch. I am going to enjoy this power of yours immensely.

A shame, though: I have no time to pledge you my loyalty. The Philistine traitors and enemies are still waiting for me to come and cut them down.

Don't blame me for it. Blame yourself, for letting your guard down. From now on I will honor you with the blood of my enemies!

Goliath swings his blade at Miryam without warning. But as the mighty edge nears her, it freezes in the air, all its force draining away.

Goliath

Nngh-AGH!!

The scar on Goliath's neck flares with a snake-like purple light. He crumples in agony as that piercing, bone-deep pain comes flooding back, and the power within him vanishes without a trace.

Goliath

What... have you... done to me...

Miryam

I am the High Priestess of Lemuria. It is true I have no skill in the matters you spoke of. But I understand the human heart well enough, Philistine.

I gave you both pain and power together. No matter where you are, no matter how strong you grow, the moment I wish it I can strip the power away and bring the pain flooding back.

You enjoy it, don't you?

Goliath

Well played... Lady Witch...

Miryam

Tell me what you know, and I will grant you an easy death.

Goliath

This was nothing, just a little test... why bother with that, Lady Witch?

You already hold the means to control me. That makes my service to you all the more secure, surely.

Our partnership still stands. You will not find a better partner than me. Accept my service, and let us go on working together.

As you well know, I am no loyal man. But it is not my loyalty you need, is it. It is what I can do.

Miryam looks at Goliath, a little surprised. After a moment, she smiles.

Miryam

Your cunning and your baseness surprise me... You are right, Goliath. A man like you can do many things I cannot.

Goliath

So. Shall we go on working together?

Goliath smiles and holds out his hand. Miryam ignores it and turns to walk toward the boat's canopy.

Miryam

From now on, you will call me High Priestess.

Goliath draws back his hand and touches the mark on his neck. He smiles out at the sea, his new fangs glinting sharp in the sunlight.

Goliath

A pleasure working with you, Your Holiness.

14. Phantom of the Past, before the fight

143 lines

The boat's hull scrapes over the fine sand and comes to rest at the shore. Miryam steps down onto the beach and gazes at the lonely island before her.

The island is very small, no more than a rugged reef. Ancient, tangled vegetation covers it over, telling of long ages of solitude.

Goliath

The lost civilization of Lemuria: it's an old legend, passed down among the Philistine tribes.

After one coastal raid, my fleet was caught in a storm and washed up here by chance.

That statue, I found it right here.

Miryam

Was there anything else?

Goliath

There were a few odds and ends. Most of them I already showed you.

I searched the whole island and found no ruins, only these few trinkets.

I'd meant to come back and look around when I had time. Never got the chance: then came all this mess with Iglenn's rebellion.

So this is your homeland?

Miryam

The island's face has changed a great deal. Perhaps it is Lemuria, perhaps something else. I cannot be sure.

Ten thousand years can change a great many things...

Miryam runs her fingers slowly through the fine sand at the shore. She remembers the fall of her homeland: standing among the fish-people, watching in despair as the sea swallowed everything Lemuria was.

Now she stands here once again. And soon, she will bring Lemuria back to these waters.

Miryam

Where did you find the statue? Take me to the place.

Goliath

This way.

What was it you said you were after, earlier? The King's Relic? What's a thing like that even good for?

Miryam

To awaken the King, I must find the silver substance left behind after His death. It is what the ritual requires.

Goliath

What exactly does this ritual of yours involve? Anything like the one you used to turn us into fish-people?

So what, you're going to dig up your king's corpse and have a go at it? He's been dead ten thousand years. The body's likely to fall to pieces the moment you touch it...

Hsss-

The purple light at his neck flickers, and the stab of pain makes Goliath suck in his breath.

Miryam

Show the King any more disrespect, and the punishment will be far worse than that. Now lead the way, and mind your tongue.

...

The black mist parts the weeds and dense brush, and a small bay opens before them.

Deborah

Huh? When I looked from the other side a moment ago, I'm sure this bay wasn't here. And it looks so strange...

Goliath

That's right. Look at it from a different angle and its shape changes, or it vanishes altogether. Some kind of sorcery, I always supposed...

Miryam

It is a dream. A dream the King wove to guard Lemuria against invaders!

A light of excitement begins to fill Miryam's eyes.

Goliath

"A dream"?

Miryam

Where exactly did you find the statue?

Goliath

Just over there.

Goliath points to an altar a little way off. It is so overgrown with weeds as to be almost unrecognizable.

Deborah brings out the statue of Tulu and sets it on the altar. The base fits the altar exactly.

Deborah

Looks like... nothing's happening... Did I put it in the wrong place?

Goliath

If just setting it there did anything, I'd have been inside long ago and stripped the place of anything worth taking.

He looks at Miryam, a question in his eyes. She goes to the altar, draws a dagger, and cuts her finger.

A drop of crimson blood falls from her pale fingertip and lands on the statue.

Shhh-

A ripple seems to pass through the very air, and the lonely island begins to shake beneath their feet.

Goliath

What is this...?

The shape of the bay blurs as the seawater swirls and rises up on end, forming a vast whirlpool: a great gate, opening in invitation.

Miryam

My King, this is the tomb You made ready for Yourself... and the seed of fire You left for Lemuria lies within, does it not?

Goliath

Hey, wait! Have you lost your mind?!...

Miryam walks eagerly toward the heart of the whirlpool, deaf to Goliath's shouts. Goliath curses and goes after her.

Goliath

Are we... underwater?

Deborah

We can breathe down here, and talk too... it really is a miracle!

A narrow stone stairway appears, descending toward the unfathomable seabed. They follow Miryam down.

Deborah

What's that... up ahead?

After how long, none of them can say, the stone steps bring them to a magnificent ruin.

The dark stone pillars stand solemn as beheaded guards, halberds still in hand, ranged along either side.

The walls and roads of great stone blocks lie cracked and rotting, foul algae creeping over their remains, telling of glory long past and ten thousand years of solitude.

The group trudges through seawater and broken stone, mounting the shattered steps.

Goliath

Is this... the throne of Lemuria?

A broken stone throne stands at the end of the path. Upon it, a long-dead skeleton sits with its chin propped on one hand, gazing wearily out at the wreckage of an old dream.

Miryam

It is You, my King... it is Your holy relic! I have found You!

Ten thousand years. Ten thousand years since last I looked upon You...

Miryam bows low in devotion and kneels before the bones.

She rises, and reaches her hands into the foul remains. When she draws them out, a faint silver light shows in the dim ruin.

A silver orb rests in Miryam's hand, light flowing and shimmering across its surface, throwing dreamlike reflections through the water. Miryam leans closer, listening to it breathe.

Goliath

Is this what you've been calling... the silver substance?

Miryam

It's not like what Talis described... but this has to be what I came for!

Goliath

You're certain...? That thing doesn't look like anything good to me...

Miryam

Speak ill of the King once more, and I will grant you the most agonizing death there is.

Goliath

Only a joke. No need to be so grim...

You said this isn't what Talis described, so his method likely won't work either. What's your next move, then?

Miryam

I can hear a heartbeat inside it... it is the King's heartbeat...

Its life is fading. I can feel it... give it life, and the King will be reborn! Yes. That must be it!

She draws the dagger.

Deborah

Miryam! What are you going to do?

Miryam

To nourish the King's rebirth with my own life... what greater honor could there be... this is my mission!

Bless me, Deborah...

Thunk...

The ritual dagger drives into Miryam's chest, then twists, carving out a bloody hollow.

Blood sprays out without end, mixing with the seawater, swirling around the ruined throne. The skeleton bathes in the warm blood, watching the scene before it, cold and unmoved.

Miryam seems to feel the pain not at all, her smile only growing more fervent.

She lifts the molten silver orb and presses it into the hollow in her chest.

Miryam

Ngh-

The instant it enters Miryam's body, the orb blazes with light and writhes wildly. It is fighting her.

Miryam's life pours into it, is devoured, and then is cast aside.

Flames sear every inch of her skin; blades tear at every scrap of her flesh. Endless pain overwhelms Miryam, and still she fights to keep that twisted smile.

Miryam

My King... please... take me... accept me...

Thud...

Deborah

Miryam!

Miryam can hold on no longer, and faints dead away.

Goliath

Get that cursed thing out of her body and carry her onto the boat.

Deborah

But Miryam said...

Goliath

If you want her to live, do as I say, now.

...

The mist and the waves have died away, and the island has shrunk to a lonely black speck in the distance.

Goliath leans against the rail, savoring the gentle roll of the boat.

Abisha

Lord Goliath, you seem to be in good spirits. Does this sun put you in mind of the coast back home, in Philistia?

Goliath

The coast back home? Ha. I was just thinking: kill Miryam now, and I could go wherever I pleased.

Abisha

Huh? My lord, that... that doesn't seem right...

Goliath

Miryam's power far outstrips mine. She's gravely wounded now. Miss this chance today, and there may never be another.

Abisha

You won't do it, though.

Goliath

What's this? You think I've gone soft-hearted on you?

Abisha

It's not that... If you really meant to kill her, you'd have done it already, not sat here talking it over with me.

Goliath

Heh. Little one, you're getting to know me too well.

Abisha

Lord Goliath... why haven't you killed Miryam?

Goliath

Kill her, and yes, I'd be free. But what good is freedom?

Goliath watches the flock of seabirds wheeling over the water, then closes his eyes, content.

Goliath

I could settle scores with the tribes that beat the Philistines, or go on raiding the coast with my people. But that's all it would ever amount to.

Miryam gave me strength. But strength isn't enough. Not nearly enough.

Brute strength, nothing more. Set us against the kingdoms' real armies, and we'd still be run down, fleeing like stray dogs across these waters.

What I want is a power far greater than anything Miryam gave me.

It is called power, Abisha. Set beside power, freedom is worth nothing at all.

A crimson gleam flickers in his eyes; he licks his lips and smiles with pleasure.

Goliath

Miryam holds the Ornn family in her hand now. Through her, I can multiply that power many times over.

And when the time is right, I will take that power out of her hands for myself.

Abisha

But Miryam's so powerful... the risk is far too great...

Goliath

Abisha, I am the leader of the Philistines, remember? All we have ever done is lose, and run. I mean to lead the Philistines to a victory, for once.

As for the risk... what do you imagine I have left to lose?

The giant gives Abisha's shoulder a gentle pat, then rises and crosses to Miryam's sickbed.

...

Miryam

My King... my King... You have forsaken me... why...

Blood seeps through the bandages over her chest, but Miryam takes no notice. She lies there weak and spent, staring blankly out at the endless sea.

Goliath

You've done nothing but say that one line since you woke. Can't you come up with something new?

You look like a dead fish strung up on a hook.

Miryam

That Divine Fetus can be sustained by a living body, I'm certain of it. I felt it so clearly... my method is not wrong!

But the King refused me... the King refused me!

Goliath sees the pain and confusion in Miryam plainly. Then, in an instant, they are gone.

Miryam

The King told me: when the stars stand in their proper places, He shall return, and Lemuria shall rise again...

The stars. The stars... could it have to do with the stars...

I see it now, I see it! The King's power comes from the stars. Perhaps only one born at the hour the stars stand right can nourish the King's Divine Fetus...

The next time the stars stand right is not far off. I can find a newborn child... cough cough...

Excitement blazes in Miryam's eyes. She lurches upright, tearing at her wounds, and breaks into violent coughing.

Goliath

Rest, and heal first. If you die here, your King doesn't live either.

Whether it's finding the Holy Child, nurturing the Divine Fetus, or gathering worshippers... everything you mean to do next will take a great deal of money, strength, hands, and power.

Miryam

I have no time to trouble myself with such things...

Goliath

That is precisely why we work together. I have the time. Plenty of it.

The Ornn family's strength alone won't be enough for what lies ahead. We will need more of the great families of this continent on our side.

Miryam

The entire Ornn family is yours to command. See to these matters yourself.

Before the next time the stars stand right, I will find a fitting vessel for the King's Divine Fetus.

Miryam turns her head a little and glances at Goliath.

Miryam

Strength, power, wealth, dignity... I know well what it is you want, Philistine. I do not care.

I keep you alive because you are clever enough to be useful. Do nothing foolish.

Goliath gives a wicked smile.

Goliath

As you wish, Your Holiness.

Deborah

Miryam, we're home!

Along the winding coastline of the Ornn family's lands, the strange fish-people, drawn by some silent call, stand massed along the shore, awaiting their master.

Goliath looks them over with satisfaction: their strange shapes, the blades in their hands, the loyal, witless look in their eyes.

He gazes past the fish-people at the endless rich lands beyond, like a shark eyeing a dying whale.

15. My Dear Friend, before the fight

133 lines
Head of the Edmond Family

Please, sit, Goliath of the Ornn family.

The old man's words still keep a basic aristocratic polish, but he makes no effort at all to hide the disdain in his tone.

Goliath

Mr. Edmond, I fully understand your hostility toward the Ornn family.

The Ornn family has taken a rather uncommon path of late...

Head of the Edmond Family

An uncommon path? You freaks of nature... Your very existence is a blasphemy to everyone on this continent.

Goliath

Believe me, Mr. Edmond, it was an accident. That witch Miryam is the one who did all this.

I know you and several other families are secretly planning to move against the Ornn family...

Old Edmond's body tenses suddenly, and he sits up a little. Goliath takes it all in and smiles at him.

Goliath

No need to be nervous, Mr. Edmond. Miryam robbed me of my freedom. You and I share a common enemy.

Miryam has immense power. You have many brave warriors, but bringing her down will cost you dearly.

I am willing to work with you. And this is a token of my good faith.

The guards carry several chests into the parlor. When the chests are opened, dazzling golden light spills across Old Edmond's face, and for a moment his eyes glaze over.

Head of the Edmond Family

I feel your good faith now, Mr. Goliath... What is your plan?

Goliath

I have already called on the Pappas, the Enom, and several other great families, one by one.

The armies of the various families have begun to gather. Before they move, I believe we need to hold a council.

I will tell you everything about the Ornn family, and offer you my counsel.

I will see to it that you kill Miryam at the smallest possible cost. And...

He leans in close to Old Edmond's ear.

Goliath

To be honest with you, Mr. Edmond, I am looking for the right man for a deeper partnership.

To be blunt, the Edmond family is not counted among the strongest of the great houses. That is exactly why I am willing to deal with you.

The wealth and lands of the Ornn family, even Miryam's power: a share of all of it, I can offer to you.

What I seek is a deep alliance. After all, our aim is not merely to defeat Miryam and the Ornn family, is it?

The old man looks at Goliath with a knowing smile.

Head of the Edmond Family

Heh heh heh, you ambitious little devil...

Your vision reaches far, Mr. Goliath. Yes: the fall of the Ornn family is only the prologue.

Our alliance will surely usher in a new dynasty upon this land...

...

Miryam

Sister... Father... gah-!

Deborah

Miryam? Miryam, are you all right?

Miryam wakes in a cold sweat, her back soaked through.

Her father and sister fade from her sight, and in their place is Deborah's worried face.

Deborah

Were you dreaming about your family again?

Miryam

I saw my father and my sister. They both had fish-people's faces... Father said they have lived this way for ten thousand years...

He asked me: how much longer must he wait...

Deborah, I... I can no longer remember my father's face...

Miryam can say no more. She leans weakly against the bed rail.

Deborah lays a handkerchief on Miryam's forehead and gently pats her back.

Deborah

You've been having nightmares all this time... Your wounds still aren't fully healed, so stop dwelling on all this.

It's all right. Once you've got your strength back and brought the Divine Realm here, you'll be reunited with your family soon enough.

Miryam

I'm sorry, Deborah... In Lemuria, and now: you have helped me so much...

Deborah

There you go again, saying things I don't understand... what is there to apologize for?

Miryam shakes her head and explains no further. She gazes at Deborah's swollen belly, her expression hard to read.

Miryam

My wounds are nearly healed. You're going to be a mother soon. You should be taking care of yourself first.

Deborah

The two of us, we're both as healthy as can be...

Oh! Miryam! Miryam, quick, listen... she's kicking me!

Miryam

Really? Let me hear...

Miryam bends down and leans close to Deborah's belly.

Miryam

Ah, it's true... I hear it...

Deborah

Little one, look: this is your godmother, our High Priestess, Miryam. She sensed you, and so we knew early on that you would be a girl, and made ready your birth-gifts.

One day she will take our whole family to the legendary Divine Realm!

By then, your father will still be the High Priestess's coachman, and I will still be the High Priestess's handmaid...

Miryam

In the Divine Realm there is no need for coachmen or handmaids.

Deborah

That won't do. It wouldn't be half as nice as staying by your side.

Miryam gazes at Deborah's belly, and a complicated smile crosses her face.

Miryam

Deborah, you are my only friend. There is something I have been wanting to tell you...

Believer

Your Holiness, Lord Goliath is waiting at the door.

Miryam

... Let him in.

Deborah

Looks like I'll have to wait a little longer for this surprise of yours~

Deborah pulls a face at Miryam and slips off to the next room. Goliath comes in, watching Deborah's figure with a thoughtful look.

Miryam

How are things going with the other families?

Goliath

Land-dwellers are cleverer than Philistines, true. But so long as they are human, what they want never differs by much.

I told every family they would be our closest allies. Together we would kill you, wipe out the Ornn family, and then I would divide the land, the wealth, the power among them.

The promise is full of holes, but those fools are arrogant enough to think it their destiny to stand at the summit of the world, and they doubt none of it.

Their armies are gathering. The day the stars stand right is only a few days off, and we will hold a feast that night.

It will be a truly splendid feast.

Goliath grins with malice, baring his sharp, shark-like teeth.

Miryam

You have done well.

Goliath

And you? How goes the search for the Holy Child?

Miryam

I have searched every last soul within the Ornn family.

I have found a few children due to be born at the moment the stars stand right, but their families do not believe in the Divine Realm.

Such a child is unworthy to be the vessel that nurtures the King.

Goliath

To be born at that precise moment, and to have a family that believes in your Divine Realm: yes, that is a hard thing to find.

The Ornn family's reach is still very narrow, and your faith has had no time to spread. There are precious few we can find...

A pity Deborah's child won't be born for another three months. Otherwise she would have made the perfect candidate.

So what now? Do we let one of those born under the right stars give it a try?

Miryam

If the implantation fails again, the Holy Embryo could be harmed... I cannot let the King run such a risk.

Goliath

That's a hard one... I can't think of any other way to help you.

Goliath leans back in his chair. Then, seeing where Miryam is looking, and the look on her face, he sits up sharply.

Goliath

Wait... you can't be thinking of...

Miryam turns her head slightly and looks at Goliath. Her eyes send a chill up his spine and into his skull.

Goliath

That's just like you, Miryam. You really are a @2 lunatic.

Don't worry, it doesn't bother me in the least. My choice was the right one. Only by working with a madwoman like you can I do what no ordinary man could.

Miryam

Go and make ready... I too must begin preparing my ritual.

Goliath

Heh... when the stars stand right, it will be a splendid night indeed. Until then, Your Holiness.

...

The door swings open, and the soft light of the setting sun falls on Deborah.

She hums a local tune, one hand stroking her swollen belly, perhaps wondering what to make ready for the baby, or what name to give her.

Seeing Miryam come in, she waves to her.

Deborah

Miryam, are you done talking? How did it go?!

Miryam

It went well. Goliath has everything ready.

Deborah

Wonderful! Does that mean the Divine Realm will be here soon?!

Miryam smiles at her. Deborah has known her too long, and catches the weariness in that smile at once.

Deborah

Miryam, you don't seem quite yourself.

You said it went well with Goliath... but what about our side? Has something gone wrong?

Miryam

I cannot find the right one, Deborah... Our faith has not spread yet, and there is no Holy Child who fits...

I wanted to wait for the next time the stars stand right. But Father urges me, the King urges me... I cannot wait any longer, Deborah.

She holds Deborah close, burying her face against Deborah's belly. Tears fall, soaking into Deborah's dress.

Deborah

Oh, if only my child had come two or three months sooner, then I could have helped you...

Miryam, don't fret so. We can think of some other way together...

Miryam

There is no other way, Deborah. There is only one left...

She lifts her head, wipes away her tears, and gently strokes Deborah's face.

Old questions come back to her, ones she had forgotten long ago. Buried by the years, they surface again now, drifting through her mind with the smell of settled dust.

Miryam

Deborah, do you believe in the King?

Deborah

Of course I do...

Miryam

Deborah, do you know what faith is?

My teacher once told me: faith is all of one's duty and all of one's meaning, and beyond it, there is nothing else to want.

Deborah

Hmm... you make it sound so complicated...

Miryam

It is really very simple. Deborah, you have been my one true friend for a very long time now...

I promised you the highest honor: to make you the first citizen of the Divine Realm. I promised to make your house the happiest family in the Divine Realm.

I will keep it, Deborah. I will remember everything you hoped for. And now, I bestow that honor upon you.

The Divine Realm will surely come, and the stairway that leads to it will bear your name. Every believer, every citizen of the Divine Realm, will remember you...

Deborah

!!!

Wait, Miryam, I...

Deborah has no time to feel afraid. Before she can finish, a serpentine black mist slips into her body. A wave of dizziness takes her, and she slumps onto Miryam's shoulder.

Young Miryam

You can't do this...

Miryam

I have to do this.

Young Miryam

Father and the King would never want to see you become this!

Miryam

You are only a nine-year-old child, Miryam. You do not understand.

Father and the King, they long to witness the coming of the Divine Realm.

Am I not fulfilling their wish?

Young Miryam

But... this is wrong...

Miryam

Only the Divine Realm is right.

Miryam's voice is calm, as though stating some plain fact that everyone ought to know.

Little Miryam looks at the self she has become. Confident. Resolute. Strong. The undisputed High Priestess of Lemuria, the lonely emissary of the Divine Realm.

That little girl trembling beneath the ruins, crying out for her father: she has nothing to do with this woman anymore.

Young Miryam

I see... I think it is time for me to go.

She stares at her older self with sorrow.

Young Miryam

May you find your Divine Realm, Miryam.

Miryam

I will.

She knows it is the last blessing, the last farewell. Little Miryam goes, as if she had never been. Miryam does not so much as glance at the place where she vanished.

She holds Deborah close, patting her back gently, softly humming a Lemurian lullaby, as though soothing a child to sleep.

Outside the window, the sun has gone down, and the stars begin to tread their appointed paths.

The moment the stars stand right is almost here.

Ornn Family Lands, the Altar

Drip... drip...

The sound of dripping water reaches Deborah's ears, clear and close. She slowly opens her eyes.

A chamber walled in dark stone slabs, starlight falling through an opening overhead and shining down on her belly.

She is naked, her belly swollen high, the veins across it plain to see in the starlight.

Deborah

What's happening... Miryam?!

She tries to rise, only to find her body and limbs strapped to a stone altar, unable to move at all.

A pair of hands reaches out and closes over hers. They are cold and slick, like a pale snake.

Miryam

I am here, Deborah. I am here.

Deborah

Miryam? What... what are you doing?

This isn't funny, Miryam... let me down... please...

Miryam

No, Deborah. This is no joke. There is nothing in this world more solemn than this.

Deborah

What do you want from me, Miryam... didn't you say I was your best friend?

You... you once had a friend named Deborah too... isn't that fate, Miryam? Please... please don't hurt me...

Miryam

How could I, Deborah? How could I ever bear to hurt you? You are my best friend. My only friend...

She gently strokes Deborah's face, wiping away her tears of fear. That cold, slick touch makes Deborah tremble beyond all control.

Miryam

I will never, ever harm you, Deborah. I am only giving you a gift.

Deborah

A-a gift?

Miryam

How I wish I could be the one to carry the Holy Embryo. But you saw what happened when I tried to implant it: I am not worthy.

Not everyone is worthy of such an honor. That I cannot have it myself: this is my one regret...

Deborah, I am your daughter's godmother. I will bestow this highest honor upon my goddaughter, and upon you as well, my dearest and only friend.

Deborah

Miryam, I am willing... I am willing to let my daughter be the vessel, to take on this honor...

But she won't be born for another three months... there is nothing I can do.

Miryam

It is too late, Deborah. It is too late.

Miryam gazes at Deborah with tenderness, her voice growing gentler still.

Miryam

She is the perfect choice. She has to be born today.

Edmond Family Lands, the Banquet Hall

Head of the Edmond Family

Now, let us welcome the host of this banquet: Goliath of the Ornn family!

Warm cheers rise through the empty hall. Goliath steps onto the dais and slowly scans the room.

Edmond, Pappas, Enom... the heads of every great family have gathered here.

Their ornate finery is written over with a history of slaughter, and their laughing eyes gleam with greed.

They are the masters of land and history. They are the slaves of power and desire.

Goliath smiles at them.

Goliath

My friends, today marks the founding of the Seven Families Alliance. The full terms of our pact will be laid before you shortly.

Now, let us enjoy this splendid feast. To land, to wealth, to power!

The crowd cheers and lifts their glasses. Course after course of fine, lavish dishes is carried in.

The banquet begins, and the nobles raise their glasses to the spoils they are sure are coming. The din drowns out every sound from beyond the doors.

Outside the doors.

Dull Guard

Agh-!

Brave Guard

Who are y-... ugh!

Abisha pulls his blade out of the guard's body.

Abisha

Hah... If only I couldn't understand these fish-people, then I wouldn't be stuck doing this kind of work...

He glances at the fishman soldier beside him and lets out a sigh.

Abisha

Are all the other exits taken? Have the personal guards those families brought with them all been killed?

Good... Hold every exit of the castle. Station a squad with me by the banquet hall, and wait for Lord Goliath's next order.

Their main army will likely take an hour or two to realize something has gone wrong here. Pray Lord Goliath has finished by then...

...

Deborah

No... Miryam... don't!

Please... please... for the sake of what we are to each other... spare me...

Miryam

I am bestowing the highest honor upon you, and you are insulting our friendship, Deborah.

But it's all right. My King understands your fear. Our friendship will not be changed by such insults.

She devoutly sets the statue of Tulu beside the altar and bows to it.

Miryam

Praise be to the Lord... to the great King of Lemuria... tonight I shall welcome Your return.

Please, wait just a little longer. The moment the stars stand right is almost upon us...

She rises and walks softly toward Deborah. In her pale hand, a strangely shaped ritual dagger glints with a dim light.

Deborah

No! Miryam!! Please... please... don't do something so cruel...

Miryam

Look at me, Deborah. Look at me...

I know you are afraid. I have seen many believers, and every one of them fears the end of this life.

But do not be afraid. You are among the highest of the Divine Realm's people: all you have suffered will be repaid in the Divine Realm.

Come, pray with me, Deborah.

Deborah

No... Miryam... I'm begging you...

Miryam

Say it with me: "For the suffering, the Lord shall recompense."

Deborah

For... for the suffering... no, Miryam...

Miryam

Say it with me: "For the wicked, the Lord shall chastise..."

Miryam recites the prayer as she comes to Deborah's side.

Deborah

Let me say one word to Nord! Miryam... just let me speak to him...

AAAH!

Sharp pain tears through her belly. She looks up to see Miryam's pale, snake-like hand driving the dagger, carving a crimson line across her belly.

Miryam neither hears Deborah's piercing screams nor sees her face, twisted with fear and agony.

The dagger moves steadily, and warm blood sprays across Miryam's face. She chants in devotion, climbing the stairway to the Divine Realm.

...

Cruel Noble

Kill Miryam! Carve up the Ornn family! Long live our alliance! Cheers!!

Glasses clink, and naked greed mingles with the smell of wine and roasted meat.

Goliath licks his lips, savoring the flavor.

Cruel Noble

Come on, drink up. What's gotten into you?

Cowardly Noble

You... your face...

Cruel Noble

My face?

He looks at the mirror-smooth tiles beside him and sees a face that is turning into a fish's.

Cruel Noble

AAAH!!!

Wounds open across his chest as if slashed by unseen daggers. His ears and eyebrows are vanishing, and his eyeballs swell fast, bulging out to the sides.

The pain cuts through the fog of wine and adrenaline and reaches him at last. He crumples to the floor, crying out in belated agony, hands clawing wildly at his own face.

Cowardly Noble

What is?! Agh!!

One, two, three... across the lavish banquet hall, the nobles drop to the floor one after another.

Crimson wounds open across them one after another, blood and flesh shaping an ancient pattern over their bodies.

The wails of agony swell into a grand symphony; blood sprays out, filling every goblet.

Head of the Edmond Family

This is... this is... a fishman ritual!

Goliath

That's right. The fishman ritual. You have surely all heard of the tragedy that befell the Ornn family.

Head of the Edmond Family

Why... Goliath?

Goliath looks as though he has just heard a fine joke. He rises from the high seat and takes up his blade.

Goliath

Work with you, and I gain one small slice of the Ornn family's lands.

Work with Miryam, and I gain power beyond anything you can imagine: I turn all your families into fish-people, and take every last coin of your wealth...

Tell me, Mr. Edmond: if you stood where I stand, what would you choose?

Head of the Edmond Family

We... we will not go down without a fight!

Brave Noble

That's right! Goliath, by the honor of the Enom family, we will! AAAHHGH!

A massive blade comes down straight, splitting the young noble in two, and with him goes any chance to prove his honor.

The doors all around the hall swing open, and countless fish-people come flooding in like a tide.

Head of the Edmond Family

...Where are the guards outside?

Goliath

While you were busy toasting and drinking, my men had already dealt with your guards.

As for the army outside the city... there is no point trying to reach them now.

Blood stains every corner of the hall, screams ringing off the walls like a symphony out of Hell.

Those who had not drunk the poisoned wine, still themselves, are shaking too hard to draw a sword or run.

Goliath takes in the bloody scene in the hall, savoring the terror on the nobles' faces. He lets out a satisfied sigh and lifts the massive blade.

Goliath

Drink the poisoned wine and turn fishman, or die where you stand. The choice is yours.

...

Deborah

AAHHHHHHH!!!...

The piercing scream strikes the stone slabs and comes back as a dull echo.

She wants to struggle, to escape, but her body is wholly in Miryam's grip, unable to move an inch.

She wants to faint, but her mind stays painfully clear, made to face every part of the pain and the fear.

Miryam

Say it with me: "For the devout, the Lord shall embrace."

Deborah's blood spatters all over Miryam. She remembers how, many years ago, on the temple altar, she bade farewell to her father in just this way.

Parting is for the sake of a better reunion. Is that not so, my King?

She gazes intently at Deborah's belly as the dagger moves to finish the last stroke of the pattern.

Miryam

Come now, Deborah. Say it. "For the yearning..."

Miryam's hand reaches into Deborah's belly, stirring, tearing.

Deborah's hoarse voice screams in agony, her bloodshot eyes flung wide, staring straight down at her own belly.

Miryam

"For the yearning, the Lord shall answer..."

Miryam tears something loose. It should have hurt. But Deborah can no longer feel anything.

Her mind has gone numb; emotion and sensation have all left her.

Dimly, she sees Miryam lift a bloody mass out of her belly.

Deborah

Sa... Sa...

Sarah. Miryam had once told her it was her little sister's name.

She and Nord had agreed to give their daughter the name, but she never got the chance to tell Miryam.

Name her Sarah, Deborah mouths, but no sound will come anymore.

Miryam

O Lord, may our song pierce the deep sea, that we may rise with You into endless peace and bliss.

Miryam kisses her goddaughter tenderly, the baby's blood staining her lips. Blood drips from the corner of her mouth as she gently closes Deborah's eyes.

...

Tap, tap, tap...

Faint footsteps sound from within the hut.

This humble hut, built of dark stone slabs, looks exactly like the home where Miryam once lived.

In that home, she said farewell to her mother, her father, her sister, her friends.

In this home, she will be reunited with them all.

The footsteps stop at the doorway.

Goliath

Praise be to the High Priestess!

Fish-people

Praise be to the High Priestess!

Goliath kneels. Behind him, countless fish-people cry out the same words and kneel as one.

They surround the hut like waves without end, awaiting the command of the deep sea.

Miryam carries the bloodied infant toward the crowd. The fish-people part to make way for her.

Miryam

The stars have come into alignment. Our Lord's Divine Fetus has been implanted in the Holy Child. Soon, He will return.

Our Lord shall shelter His righteous people, and He shall bring forth the Divine Realm!

Fish-people

The Divine Realm! The Divine Realm!

The fish-people cheer and dance in a frenzy. Miryam stands in their midst. Starlight falls on her face, streaked with blood and tears.

Goliath

The Lord's doctrine will spread throughout the world. Your Holiness, the time has come for you to give this congregation its name.

Cold and burning eyes turn slowly. Miryam looks over her soldiers, her subjects. She gives them the smile of a High Priestess.

Miryam

We walk into the sea, to follow where the King has gone. We walk out of the sea, to bring His Divine Realm home...

The world will call us the Seafarers.

Fish-people

The Seafarers! The Seafarers!!

Amid the deafening chorus of the fish-people, Miryam lifts the baby high in both hands.

In place of her heart, the Holy Embryo gives off a pure white glow beneath the stars.

Waaaah!

All falls silent. The blood-covered baby squirms, and in the ancient ruins her belated first cry rings out.

The silent stars listen to that oracle-like cry. A single star falls, drawing a mournful line across the night sky.

Another story of the stars is about to begin.
