1. The Princess, before the fight

91 lines

Monsters ate my family.

Now, they're going to eat me.

Dusk is an omen of a grim rebirth. The sinking sun hangs like a sickly blotch, and the sky is swollen with bruises.

The fire has not yet been lit, but the withered trees are already twisting in despair, as if the daily light itself were an unbearable scorch.

Hypocritical Priest

Do not be deceived by her face! The child's face is but a mask, inside that body dwells a devil, and her sins, the Lord sees them all.

She is a thief, a liar, a servant of the dark. Calamity pours from her mouth, her poison has fouled our wells and rivers, and so cattle drop dead in their pens, and the faithful sicken with plague.

You have all borne witness, how many times has she walked into the forest, vanished, and returned as if nothing happened? That is proof of her witchcraft!

Ignorant Villager

Plague... the witch... yes, it's the witch... the witch's curse...

Keeper

(A witch barely ten? Even a madman couldn't spin a lie so absurd.)

You want to shout back, to jeer, to curse, to scream, but an oil-soaked rag is jammed into your mouth.

The foul, greasy thing presses against the back of your tongue. No sound escapes you but retching.

Hypocritical Priest

See how she trembles! The devil struggles within her; this is its true, ugly form.

Merciful Lord, I pray You, unseal the mouth the devil has sealed shut, that she may confess her sins... should there yet remain in her a spark of longing for redemption.

Someone wrenches the gag from your mouth. You cough, choke, gulp in great breaths of air. Drool trickles from the corner of your mouth, but you're too weak to wipe it away.

They must be the real monsters. The villagers, the priests, all hiding behind human faces, playing their parts in this sham of a holy ritual.

The monsters ring you in, axes and pitchforks raised, watching you warily.

Hypocritical Priest

Speak, child! Declare your repentance before the Lord, this is your last chance to escape eternal damnation!

Keeper

...Monsters.

Ignorant Villager

What? What did she say?

Keeper

Monsters! Monsters! Mon, cough, cough!

You expose their elaborate charade, and panic spreads across the faces of the "monsters." A cruel thrill of triumph runs through you.

Ignorant Villager

A curse, it's a curse! The damned witch!

Gag her, quick!

Lord... please protect us...

Burn her! Burn her!

Keeper

Goblins! Bog-fiends! Ghouls! Monsters! You're all monst, mmmph, mmmph!!

Hypocritical Priest

The devil has claimed her soul. To spare our village from this foul sorcery, the unclean must be purged.

May the holy fire burn away her sin. May the Lord grant us peace.

Bundle after bundle of dry kindling is heaped at your feet. Thorns tear at your bare skin; you thrash in agony, the iron chains rattling.

Your struggle earns only more insults and a hemp rope bound tighter still.

The fire catches.

Hypocritical Priest

We cast you out... unclean spirit, apostate heretic... as smoke is scattered by wind, as wax is melted by flame...

Fallen one, persecutor, outcast! In the name of the Holy Lord, I command you: Fear! Yield! Flee...

His voice cuts off, sudden and clean, as though severed mid-sentence with shears.

Through the roiling smoke, you strain your stinging eyes. You see a stranger standing beside the priest.

When did he appear? You don't know. You look to the rest of the monsters, they stand frozen, like a huddle of gawping frogs.

The priest jerks in a fit of spasms, hands clamped to his throat. Blood wells through his fingers, spraying from his mouth; his face turns the color of the sky. He falls.

Ignorant Villager

Aaah!!

A scream, shriller than a whistle. Even the tongues of flame shudder.

Ignorant Villager

Blood... so much blood... murder! Help, help, a monster has killed him!

No, no... a demon, it's a demon! That witch has summoned something from hell! Lord, forgive us, please...

Your heart pounds. You know who he is. You know your life will not end today. All this chaos is merely a prelude, a passing episode setting the stage for his arrival.

Filled with fervent hope, you writhe with all your strength, whimpering, desperate for him to look at you, nearly oblivious to the searing chains.

A gloved hand hauls you out of the pyre. Your legs fail you; you collapse, coughing and retching, tears and snot mingling on your face.

Keeper

Cough, cough, cough, !! Wait! Cough, cough, wait! Don't go!

Before he can turn away, you seize his cloak in panic.

He seems caught off guard by your sudden move; his hood slips halfway off, revealing a boy's face.

???

Let go.

You're clever enough to tell an empty threat from a real warning. Remembering how the priest just died, you flinch.

But then you look at his face again, without doubt, this is exactly what a noble knight in the stories looks like. He must have come for you. You even feel you've seen those eyes somewhere before.

Yes, you must have seen him somewhere. In a dream, a curse, or a prophecy. How else can you explain this sudden surge of courage?

Keeper

No... Cough, cough, you can't leave.

???

Why?

Keeper

Because... Cough... because you're here to save me! You can't just leave me here!

???

You're safe now. Go back to your life.

Keeper

There's no life for me here. There are monsters everywhere. They catch people and eat them. You've seen it yourself!

???

That's none of my concern.

Keeper

How can you say that? I've been waiting for you.

???

Waiting for me? You... you know me?

Keeper

Of course. You're my knight.

Shock, bewilderment, panic, anguish flash across his face all at once.

He wrenches away from you as though recoiling from a viper, and presses a bloodstained shortsword to your throat.

???

Who are you?!

Keeper

I, I'm a princess! Yes, a princess! The monsters took me, and I've been waiting for you to come and save me!

Don't doubt me, if I weren't a princess, why would heaven send a knight to save me?

???

...

The sword returns to its sheath. He rises and walks off into the dense forest, without saying another word to you.

Keeper

Wait, where are you going? I, cough, I'll go with you.

Stop! Cough... As princess, I command you to stop!

Quick as he is, you have the advantage, you know this forest like the back of your hand.

Besides, you have nowhere else to go. All you can do is keep chasing him, even if it means falling in the woods and becoming food for the beasts.

Keeper

Huff... huff... Wait, wait, I know the rules.

I have somewhere I need to go. Escort me there, and you'll earn honor and rewards.

???

I need neither.

Keeper

Yes, you do. At least right now, you need someone to lead you out of here, don't you?

He doesn't answer, but he slows to a stop.

???

Where are you going?

Keeper

Um... oh, right, the Apple Isle. Ever heard of it? A paradise where no one has to till the soil, no one falls ill, and winter never comes. That's where I'm going.

???

Never heard of it. Where is it?

Keeper

The fairy didn't tell me the way, but we can search as we go. After all, a great adventure is always full of challenges, right?

His black cloak melts into the night. He stands behind the tangled thicket, his features blurred into shadow.

You inch toward him, ever so slowly, as if fearing to startle a wolf.

???

Stop. Stay right there. Come no closer.

Lead the way.

Keeper

Does that mean you've agreed, brave knight?

???

...

I am no knight.

Keeper

You are now. From this moment on, you're my loyal knight.

A knight keeps his word. You must protect me until we reach the Apple Isle. You'll walk ahead and clear the thorns and vines out of my path, and if any monster comes after us, you'll drive it off, and also...

Where are you going? You haven't sworn an oath yet! If you dare lie to your princess, the monsters will carry you off and eat you! Swear it first.

Hey! Don't go, wait for me, I know the way!

2. The Holy Grail, before the fight

99 lines
Terrified Smith

I don't know, I don't know it was, no, no, no, please, please have mercy,

AAAH!!

The scream is drowned by the lashing rain, bleeding into the gutter along the wall, left to rot with mud, horse dung, and vegetable scraps, until the dark alley swallows it whole.

The body slumps to the ground. A cold glint of metal flashes and vanishes. The murderer draws his cloak tight and strides away, his footsteps dissolving into the rain.

You hurriedly pull up your hood and trot through the downpour to keep pace.

Keeper

What are you looking for?

???

I didn't say you could follow.

Keeper

If I don't, how do I know you won't betray your princess? You won't even swear an oath.

???

Nothing I do is knightly. You've seen it yourself.

Keeper

Why? A knight is supposed to fight monsters, and you do it well.

You're looking for something, aren't you? I can tell. Searching place after place ever since we entered the city, it's been days.

Did monsters take something from you too?

???

...

We're here.

Inviting golden candlelight fills the room, and the oak door shuts out the cold wind. For a homeless wanderer, a monastery's storehouse left open on a rainy night could be a lifesaver.

But you won't be fooled by appearances. You remember them...

You remember those in black robes, wearing brass pendants and carrying candlesticks back and forth, the murderers who call themselves shepherds.

They are monsters among monsters.

Keeper

Why are we here? Is what you're looking for in here?

???

Stay here and wait for me. Don't follow.

Keeper

What?! No! No way!

I am NOT staying here! I'm going with you!

Kindly Nun

What's the matter? Child, do you need help?

???

Yes. Please watch over her. Don't let her run off.

Kindly Nun

Oh... it's so late, and the rain is so heavy, where are you rushing off to?

Wait until sunrise, don't leave your little sister alone.

???

I'll come back for her at dawn.

Kindly Nun

If you insist... Well, all right, then.

Poor child, soaked to the bone. Come, come here, let me wipe your face.

You are trapped. You cannot move. The nun wipes your face with dry linen; you never know when she might suddenly press it over your mouth and nose.

Fear crushes your chest. You cannot breathe. You can only scream.

Keeper

Come back! You're my knight! You're supposed to protect me, you can't leave me here!

Please, I'll be good, just let me go with you, please!!

Your desperate cries draw out many eyes, some like a beetle's, some like a goat's, some like an owl's.

They stare straight at you, as if you were the only one here without eyes.

Keeper

No... don't go... you promised me...

Please, don't leave me behind...

???

I've changed my mind. Let her come with me.

You snap your head up. Your knight has somehow doubled back, and now stands before you, blocking all those staring eyes.

Kindly Nun

But where will you take her? There aren't many places left in the city to shelter from the rain, and none of them are fit for a child.

???

The place I'm going isn't in the city.

Kindly Nun

There's even less out there, ah! You're not heading to that manor, are you?

???

What's wrong with the manor?

Kindly Nun

That manor... it... sigh. You two are refugees, too, aren't you? Child, don't go near that place.

That lord, he used to be a good man. But with war, plague, and disaster ebbing and surging like the tide, men became less than men.

They say he's gone mad. Fewer people are seen in the streets now, those who went there for bread never came back.

May the Lord forgive us... they all say he's been eating people in secret.

Monsters eat people, you've long known this, so it doesn't surprise or frighten you at all... well, not that much. You have your knight.

???

Stay close. Something's wrong here.

Keeper

O, okay.

The vast manor stands empty, no guards, no servants, it feels long abandoned. In the narrow, endless corridor, only your carefully muted footsteps echo.

Keeper

So... what exactly are you looking for? Is it important to you? Tell me what it looks like, and I can help you find it.

???

A golden goblet.

Keeper

A golden goblet? You mean made of gold? Wow, how big is it, how tall? What's it used for? What does gold even look like, does it glow like the moon at night?

You ask one question after another, and the knight lowers his head in response.

???

...I don't know.

Keeper

Huh? Isn't it yours?

???

It's not. But it matters to me.

Keeper

Oh! I know, it's the Holy Grail, isn't it? I've heard of it in stories. A magical treasure that only a knight who passes the trials can claim. No wonder you've been searching so long.

Ahem. I'm your princess, so if you get the Holy Grail, that's good for me too, so...

He suddenly halts, raises a finger, and gestures for silence.

You freeze at once, breath catching in your throat.

On the fourteenth heartbeat, a dull thud echoes from the end of the hall, followed by the crash of something hitting the floor. A few panicked cries break the silence.

A sudden, flickering light flares up, casting frantic shadows like figures locked in a violent struggle. You charge forward, only to be forced back by a wave of heat. It's fire. Blue fire.

Mad Manor Lord

Let, cough, let me go! I am so close! Just a little more!

An acrid smell fills the secret room. A suspicious dark-red liquid trickles through glass tubes. Set alight by a candle, the clear liquid spilled across the floor burns silently with ghostly blue flames.

It's an alchemical workshop, hidden in the depths of the manor.

Amid the glass vessels, a goblet of pure gold gleams brighter than the candle flame.

That must be the Holy Grail.

The knight loses his composure and rushes toward the Holy Grail. Hideous markings emerge on his skin, and countless shadows rise like flames behind him.

???

What did you put inside it?

Mad Manor Lord

Let go of me! You don't understand! It's coming...

<Change>Through the rotted veil, along the forgotten path...

The living, the dead, no one shall escape... none shall be spared...

???

What is coming?

Mad Manor Lord

It... the eternal night, the final annihilation... it's a curse... the curse is almost here! The curse that devours all, the curse of the Witch Princess!!

???

What did you say?!

The shadow behind him shudders violently. The flame falls into eyes wide with shock, igniting something, fear? Or hope?

Those words must conceal a powerful spell, for your knight suddenly freezes solid like a statue, and yet, for the first time, seems truly alive. His shadow trembles incessantly.

???

You, you... you remember her? What else do you remember?

Mad Manor Lord

<Change>Vanity... Vanity of vanities, all is vanity... Man's labor is but dust upon stone, with no past, no future...

No, the goblet! The goblet is the only salvation! Let me drink the truth, let me...

I must continue!

???

Answer my question! Princess @1@2, how much do you remember about her?!

The shadow writhes. The shadow surges. The shadow dances wildly. The shadow coils tighter and tighter around the monster's throat; its lips part and close in a futile gasp.

Mad Manor Lord

<Change>I remember... the plague... the potion... the curse... gah, gah... I remember, I remember you...

O... gier... my knight... you... fled...

Snap.

The words die unfinished, the shadow snaps its neck.

The bloated head lolls to one side like a cinched sack. From the torn hole two rusted eyeballs bulge out, still staring into the void.

???

...

Keeper

O... gier? Is that... your name?

He suddenly turns to look at you. Like a ghost caught in the light, his face is caught between vacancy and venom.

On the wall, the shadows sway in a jubilant dance, closing in around you.

Keeper

It's not? Well... whatever your name is, you're my knight all the same.

We've found the Holy Grail, where do we go now?

At your words, he slowly turns toward the goblet on the table. Then, with effort, he tears himself free of the shadows and lifts the cup, still half full of antidote, or poison; you cannot tell.

You watch him throw his head back and drain the cup.

Keeper

HEY!!

3. The Grave, before the fight

97 lines

You once heard that everyone's name is a spell.

If you lose your name by accident, whether forgotten by yourself or by others, you become like a sheep strayed from the flock, stripped of protection, marked by devils.

Perhaps your knight, like you, was robbed of everything by monsters. Perhaps he lost even more, not even his name was spared.

And so the lurking demon has bared its fangs.

Keeper

Where... where are you... is this the wrong way?

The moonless night is pitch black, the dense forest darker still, its depths unfathomable. Clutching your lantern to your chest, you search for him, following the traces of his panicked flight.

Before the shadow swallowed him, he told you to leave.

But how can a princess be without her knight? You tried to pull him free, but he shoved you away, smashed through the window, leapt from the attic, and vanished into the wild woods beyond the manor.

The downpour obscures the broken branches and footprints, and everything around you looks the same. Your steps grow slower and slower, until at last you stop, lost and bewildered.

Keeper

Pant, pant... Where are you... my knight...

You recall that rumor, and your fear deepens.

You will not let your one and only knight be defeated by the devil. You will remember his name. ...You already do.

Mad Manor Lord

O... gier... my knight... you... fled...

Keeper

Ogier... That's it, Ogier! Where are you! O, gi, er,

A howl of anguish tears through the curtains of rain, sounding more like a wounded beast than a man. You run at once toward the sound.

Keeper

Stop hiding! I can see you!

"Ogier"

Get back! Don't, pant, don't come closer!!

The lantern light flickers weakly, unable to dispel the darkness pressing in from all sides. Your knight has been cornered, his back taut as a fully drawn bow.

"Ogier"

Shut up! I haven't forgotten! That's not, no, I never, I won't forget!

I'll avenge them... I must avenge them... an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth...

No, it's not true, you're lying! The princess wouldn't say that. The princess, princess, she...

AAARGH!!

His babbling is cut off by a scream. As if someone had driven a spear through his chest, he stumbles to his knees, but the shadow behind him remains standing, like armor, like a cage.

A wave of panic seizes you. You know that if you don't stop this now, the shadow will become a man, and the man will be reduced to a shadow.

Keeper

Wake up! Stop listening to it! Your princess is right here!!

"Ogier"

...Princess@1@2... have I failed you?

I didn't flee, you told me to, no, that's not what I mean... I failed you. I have no right to beg forgiveness.

Shame... shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame... shame is all I have left...

I am no knight, I'm... I'm...

Who?

Dazed, he lifts his face toward you, if it can still be called a face.

The shadow has corroded his flesh, leaving marks like snail trails. His face is a rotting blur, weeping thick, black slime.

Whose answer is he waiting for? The cold rain has frozen your lips and tongue. You stand stunned in the mire, a belated shiver finally taking hold.

Keeper

...Wait, wait, I know! You're...

No! OGIER!!

Black ooze bursts from his chest. Your knight exhausts his strength in silence and crumples like a discarded shell.

The shadow coils around him, laughing and weeping all at once.

You have witnessed a person come apart.

Keeper

Ogier! You're Ogier! I know it, I remember it, and the devil can't hurt you now!

Wake up! Can you hear me? Wake up, we aren't there yet!

You'll be fine, the Apple Isle, the devil can't reach there, you'll be fine once we get there! Get up, please!

The storm has melted the forest into a putrid bog. You scream and weep and drag at him, only to sink deeper and deeper.

You don't know where else to flee.

So this is how the world dies... buried alive by despair.

"Ogier"

Cough... cough, cough...

When the rain stops... go to the graveyard...

Keeper

Ogier! You're still alive!

Wait, why the graveyard? Y-you are still alive... right?

"Ogier"

To bury... in the graveyard... no time left... must be buried...

Keeper

Who? Who do you need to bury?

...

He falls silent, staring straight upward, to where all swamps end, where all memories and oblivion dissolve, from where the rain descends, thinning the air ever further.

But neither of you can reach the sky, the graveyard is the only place left to go. It's the closest to the end.

Keeper

All this money, just for a bare patch of ground...

If I'd known a place for monsters to bury themselves would cost so much, I'd never have come...

The rain has been falling for three days straight. At last, it lets up briefly.

"Ogier"

Please... help me bury this bundle in the graveyard.

Keeper

Okay, I'll help, but you have to at least tell me what's inside, right?

"Ogier"

...They're keepsakes someone left behind.

The headstone is a blank slate, bearing no name. You don't know who it is for.

Keeper

A candle, a comb, a little stone figure, a scrap of parchment...

A light bundle, just a few things inside, but all badly damaged. You rack your brains but find no answer. Your knight's past is just as much of a blank to you.

Keeper

...Are we burying the Holy Grail too?

Patrol Guard

Hey, you, kid! Where did you come from? Why are you sneaking around?

Monsters in armor walk through the graveyard. They move in perfect, identical unison, like a giant centipede.

One of them suddenly stops, and then the entire line halts.

Patrol Guard

Deaf, are you? I asked where you came from, Hey! Where are you going? Catch her!

Keeper

Let go! Let go of me! I've done nothing, I bought this plot!

Patrol Guard

You bought it? Ha, then tell me, whose grave is it? There's not even a name on the stone!

Keeper

I, I...

Cemetery Sexton

Good sirs, this is the parish graveyard. The child did buy the plot; it's duly recorded in the register.

As for the name, the plague has already come, and people vanish every day. A nameless gravestone is nothing unusual now.

The monsters' expressions change. They exchange looks and hurry away, terrified of catching whatever lingers in the air. In their eyes you see a fear all too familiar.

Keeper

The plague?

Cemetery Sexton

Ah, yes. The cruel, dreadful plague. To make a person forget takes but a little time; to make a stone forget requires turning the stone into sand.

More and more stones are losing their memories. The elders have become as blank as newborns. We have no stories left to tell.

Keeper

Do you... do you think it's a curse? Witches, or something like that?

Cemetery Sexton

Curse, plague, the Lord's punishment, or the Death Knight's revenge, what's the difference?

There's nothing we can do. We can only focus on the present. The present is all we have, all we've ever had.

Go home now, child. It'll be dark soon.

Keeper

Wait, Death Knight? What's that?

Cemetery Sexton

A legend. That war was a mistake. They cried out to wipe out the plague, yet all they did was hasten its arrival. They created a monster.

He hides in the shadows of trees, ships, stone walls, and birds, moving from one place to another, untouched even by sunlight.

His blood runs black, his heart burns with ghostly fire, his eyes glint like will-o'-the-wisps rising from a deep mire. Wherever he passes, he casts a shadow so pitch-black it cleaves the daylight.

He's the continuation of that war, the malice of the dead made flesh. He only appears at night to slaughter his enemies.

He never forgets. He never grows careless. His reason for coming is plain enough: our lord was once a subject of the duchy he served.

Keeper

What? You mean, the lord is his enemy, and... he's here for revenge?

Cemetery Sexton

Of course. We all know it, and the lord knows it. Why else would the city suddenly be crawling with patrols?

They're all waiting for him.

The rain starts again, turning the streets into rushing rivers.

Clutching the bundle of keepsakes to your chest, you dash through the backstreets, slipping past patrol after patrol of guards as you head for the thatched shelter where you've been hiding.

Keeper

Faster, faster, get back and tell him...

The monster feared even by monsters is, without doubt, your knight. Word of his brazen killings has finally reached the lord. The guards will search every corner of the city tonight.

Keeper

There's still time, the city gates aren't closed yet, just a little faster...

Ogier! Run, they're coming,

The cramped little shelter is tucked at the dead end of the alley. Burlap bags are piled high around it, yet the mud still comes flooding through.

Inside the shelter there's nothing but straw. Your knight is nowhere to be found.

4. The Dragon's Lair, before the fight

72 lines

What is a promise? A spell that only works if you believe.

What is parting? The moment right after arrival.

What is death? A tomorrow without reunion.

What is oblivion?

...

......

A curse.

A curse. A plague. A punishment. A worm-eaten hollow. A broken riverbed. Rotting in silence. Weathering. Sinking. An exhausted gaze. A story fading into shadow. The final death.

You have already lost everything. You cannot bear oblivion again.

The rain has put out the raging fire. You pass through the unguarded gate into a scene of devastation.

The castle stands in silence. Empty oil barrels, torn sacks, shattered shields, broken spears. Arrows bristle in clumps like coarse grass bowed by the wind. The raw smell of wet earth mingles with the lingering stench of burning.

A bloody battle once raged here. Now only the shadows remain.

The shadows spread unchecked through the dark, climbing the high walls, crawling over the crenels, engulfing the sprawled corpses with a wet, squelching sound. You try not to think about what that means.

Keeper

Follow the shadows... just follow the shadows...

Dying Guard

Ah, ah... help... help me...

A pained groan leaks out from under the misshapen helmet. One of the shadows nestles against the monster like a lover. You gather your courage and step forward.

Keeper

The one who brought the shadows here, where did he go?

Dying Guard

The... shadows?

No, no, that was a monster! Black blood... hollow inside... Death Knight... It's true, all of it!

Run... gah... run! An undead monster... vengeance... ruin... gurgle... gurgle, gurgle...

A thick, gluey sound wells up from the monster's throat. It thrashes like a stranded fish, yet its arm rises slowly, reaching for the bundle in your arms. Squirming ooze seeps from the joints of its armor.

It's the shadow. It wants the Grail.

Keeper

No, no. You can't have it. It's important.

"No" is not an option. The shadows pour down off the walls, rushing to gather around you. You clutch the bundle tight and flee deeper into the castle.

The gatehouse. The great hall. The chapel. Stone stairs spiral down into the earth. The castle is a perilous dragon's lair.

The air grows colder with every step; your ragged breaths and footfalls echo off the stone, amplified until they sound like someone else's.

Firelight glows at the foot of the stairs. You see a familiar figure.

Keeper

Og,

You are about to call out to him in joy when you realize you are not alone. The monster speaks before you can.

Ailing Lord

Cough, cough, cough... Ogier...

How did you come to look like this?

"Ogier"

Look like... this?

The table is laid with fine wine and rich food. Silverware gleams in the candlelight. Were it not for the bitter cold seeping through the cracks in the stone, the lavish setting would almost make you forget you are deep underground.

The emaciated lord sits alone behind the table, eyes sunken, cheekbones jutting. Buried beneath layers of heavy silk, it resembles a dragon crouched upon its hoard.

Your knight walks toward it step by step, a long shadow trailing behind him. Perhaps he is a shadow himself. His clothes are in tatters, his face hideous, and his footsteps make no sound at all.

Ailing Lord

Yes... If I hadn't seen it myself, I'd hardly believe it. Cough, cough, cough... The youngest knight in the Duchy, reduced to a monster.

"Ogier"

The Duchy... has already fallen.

Because of you.

Ailing Lord

Because of the war. Because of the plague. Because of the greed of neighboring realms. Because of its own weakness.

Many things can bring a duchy to ruin. I was merely, cough, the least of them.

"Ogier"

You... betrayed the Duchy... colluded with our enemies... sold out... your own people...

Traitor... must die.

Ailing Lord

Yes, yes, as you can see, the reckoning has already found me. I haven't much time left. Cough, cough, cough, cough.

The plague didn't spare me either, Ogier. Death plays no favorites. It waits patiently on the far side of the bridge, and no one escapes it... except you.

Tell me, what bargain did you strike with the devil?

"Ogier"

...

Ailing Lord

The price of fleeing death can only be heavier than death itself. Death Knight... Did you choose to become its executioner, or was it a punishment?

Ogier, the Duchy's most loyal, most devout knight. Heh. Cough, cough, cough, cough, cough...

I'm a traitor who deserves to die. And you're not?

"Ogier"

!!

An invisible bolt of lightning strikes your knight, pinning him to the spot. In the dark, the shadows shudder violently, whether in joy or fury, they can wait no longer.

Ailing Lord

I betrayed the Grand Duke. But you, you and your princess, betrayed God.

"Ogier"

You still remember... how dare you speak of her...

Ailing Lord

The Witch Princess. Cough, cough, cough. How ironic, her tricks finally came to light, and yet not one soul remembers her name anymore. I said it from the start: hand her over, and the war would end. The Duchy need never have fallen.

You know what she summoned. You know it well. A curse... It began the war, and it ended it too.

Thanks to her, the Duchy of @3 became a forgotten land.

"Ogier"

Shut up! You... have no right... to speak of her!

A shapeless spear splits the long table in two. Cups and plates crash to the floor, and the false feast breaks apart, baring its wretched truth beneath.

The shadows put out sticky limbs, greedily devouring everything they touch. A mire wells up from the dark, and the world begins to sink.

Ailing Lord

Death... and then being forgotten... as though nothing has ever happened. That is the fate of those who forsake God.

It was she who turned you into this, wasn't it... Dragged the whole Duchy into the void, and left behind a puppet full of hatred to spread true death across the land...

Do you call such a mission "loyalty"?

Ogier... whom do you truly serve?

"Ogier"

No... no... the princess didn't... gurgle... gurgle, gurgle...

Your knight clutches his head in agony. Shadow wells up from his chest, his ears, the corners of his eyes.

The demon's ceaseless torment has worn him down, he can no longer make a sound. He's like a clay doll dissolving in a black river.

While neither of you is watching, the lord pivots his wheelchair, revealing a fist-sized opening in the stone wall behind him.

A dark shape flashes past like a snake. With a dull thud, an iron spear pierces straight through your knight's chest.

Keeper

Ogier!!!

Ailing Lord

Cough, cough, cough, cough... A monster that crawled out from the grave had best crawl right back into it.

You and your little monster might as well share a grave here.

Several fully armed guards emerge from a hidden passage, their shields and swords glinting coldly. The final trap is revealed.

5. The Dragon's Lair, after the fight

52 lines

A deafening roar fills the air, and the entire keep seems to shudder. Shattered masonry clatters down in showers. The remaining monsters close ranks around the lord, ushering him toward the hidden passage as they retreat.

Your knight forces himself upright, a hoarse roar of fury bursting from his broken chest. The shadows surge over him like a tide. They seem far more eager to swallow him whole than to feast on his foes.

Keeper

Stop! You're the real monsters! Don't you run!!

Frantic and furious, you hurl the bundle with all your strength. It's packed full, and the loose knot comes undone in midair, scattering someone's keepsakes: a candle, a comb, a little stone figure...

...And the Holy Grail.

Golden light tumbles high over the shadow's bog, strikes the stone wall, bounces twice off the floor, and rolls straight to the lord's feet.

You see him raise a hand to hold back his guards, then bend down himself to pick up the small golden cup. His thumb traces the pattern on its side. Then he seems to remember something and turns to look at you, his eyes full of mockery.

Then, they flash into pure terror.

...Before the castle collapses into rubble, burying the shadows, the dragon, and the keepsakes alike, your knight draws his cloak around you and pulls you into a secret passage.

He's spent, too weak even to stand. You grip his arm tight and grope forward through the dark. A rough, freezing surface grazes your palm, it's the scales of a dragon.

You don't know how far you've walked when a breeze touches your face. It's salty. It's the sea.

Keeper

We, we're out! We made it out! Ogier, can you hear me? We're safe!!

...Ogier?

He makes no sound at all. You can't feel his heartbeat or his breath. Waves crash against the rocks; icy spray and rain lash your face.

You begin to shiver, as if feeling the cold for the first time.

"Ogier"

... Cough... cough, cough...

Keeper

Ogier! Thank goodness, I knew you wouldn't die!

"Ogier"

I... never... said you could... follow.

Keeper

I know, I know, how many times are you going to tell me? Does a princess need her knight's permission to go where she pleases?

"Ogier"

...

I... once... served... a true princess. I swore an oath to her.

I failed... to protect her.

His faint murmur sounds like sleep-talking, so easily scattered by the sea wind that you have to hold your breath to catch it.

"Ogier"

Before... the war... broke out... she ordered me... to leave...

I... obeyed.

I never thought... the enemy... would come so fast... I couldn't get back in time, cough, didn't make it...

The slaughter... the bodies... the black plague... the princess, she... she, cough, cough, cough, cough!

You don't know what painful memories he's reliving, but you can feel him curl in on himself, like a slug covered in salt.

"Ogier"

It was me... I failed to protect her... it's all gone... everything will be gone...

I once... wished to be a knight...

But... now... who... am I...

Keeper

That was then. This is now. You have a princess again now, and you still have to protect me.

For a long while he doesn't answer, but then he stirs.

"Ogier"

Put me, cough, cough, cough, put me down.

I am the weakest... the most useless...

I should... be left... behind... left in... the forgotten... past...

Keeper

No! You haven't fulfilled your promise yet, are you going back on your word?

The rising tide creeps past your knees as you trudge through the darkness.

Keeper

You are the knight... I chose.

Jagged rocks cut your calves, and the seawater numbs the wounds. You grit your teeth without crying out.

Keeper

If I let you stay behind... how is a princess supposed to... defeat the monsters... and finish her adventure... all alone?

Your words come apart between ragged breaths. You force each phrase out of your throat.

"Ogier"

...That's just a story.

Keeper

Everything... is a story.

With each sentence, you take another step, as though the words alone are keeping you moving.

Keeper

Yesterday... is today's story. Today is... tomorrow's story.

Your feet slowly go numb. Rain lashes at your eyes, blurring your vision.

Keeper

Some... fade away. Others... go on. But there have to be... stories.

Then the new princess gives her final command to the barely conscious knight.

Keeper

So... let's find... the Apple Isle.

In that last moment before the sound of rain drowns out all awareness.

Keeper

... Let's finish... our story.

6. The Quest, before the fight

134 lines
"Ogier"

...Wake...

...Rain... rest... wake up...

Someone gently nudges you awake. Half-conscious, you hear the soft patter of rain.

It's raining again. The rain has never really stopped.

The forest hid the fugitives, but word of the monster's slaughter at the castle reached the rulers. Wanted notices were nailed to the city walls, and the Church's knightly orders and the mercenaries were sent out, driving you both onward, day and night.

"Ogier"

There's a village ahead. I'll go trade for food and medicine. Rest here for now, and we'll move on when the rain stops.

Keeper

Okay... come back soon.

You hate to be left behind, but you're burning with fever, with no strength left to keep pace with him.

The wound on your leg still hasn't healed, the endless rain has made it ache all the more. Your leg is red and badly swollen below the knee. You cannot take a single step.

These past days, Ogier has carried you over mountain and valley on his back.

"Ogier"

Here. Just picked it.

As if to comfort you, he presses something into your hand. Dazed, you take a bite, and only when its sharp, puckering taste fills your mouth do you realize what it is.

Keeper

...An apple?

"Ogier"

Mm. There's an apple grove nearby.

Keeper

Apples... Apple Isle, have we made it?

"Ogier"

...Soon.

He unwinds the bandages, packs fresh herbs onto the wound, then carefully wraps it again. You study his face, and what you see there isn't anticipation.

Before you can press him further, barking rises in the distance and draws closer.

Innocent Maiden

Wait, slow down! Where are you going? That's not the way back to the vill, ah!

A sheepdog bursts from the thicket, barking fiercely at the intruders. The girl chasing it spots you both and drops her wicker basket with a startled cry.

It's Ogier. His face is covered in twisted black scars, making him look like a rag doll torn apart and clumsily stitched back together, a face straight out of a horror story.

He meets her eyes in silence, then rises and pulls up his hood.

"Ogier"

We're leaving.

Innocent Maiden

No... I didn't mean, please, wait!

Ogier has barely taken a few steps with you on his back when the girl hurries after him.

Innocent Maiden

Don't go! I didn't mean it that way. There are lots of sick people in the village. I can take you there!

"Ogier"

Sick people?

Innocent Maiden

Yes, lepers. It used to be just them, until the army came. The soldiers destroyed so many villages, but they never went near the leper village. So people with nowhere else to go started coming here. I did, too.

Don't worry, everyone's used to it. We look different, that's all. We eat, sleep, and work just like anyone else... leprosy isn't half as terrifying as the army. You get used to it.

I'm sorry. I wasn't afraid of you. I just have never seen... I'm sorry! Here, take these apples. I picked them myself, only the biggest and sweetest!

...

What should paradise be like?

No monsters, no despair, no unspeakable terror, no eyes hiding in the dark. No lying down at night afraid you'll never wake again. Hot soup every day.

You can't imagine anywhere closer to paradise than this.

Barber-Surgeon

...That'll do.

A sharp little blade slits the abscess open, paring away the rotted flesh bit by bit, and a red-hot iron presses into the wound to stop the bleeding. You scream through clenched teeth, drenched in sweat.

It's over. The wad of cloth is pulled from your mouth, and you gulp for air with all your might, nearly swallowing it down into your stomach.

This time is different. You know it. They're doing it to save you, and your knight is right beside you.

Barber-Surgeon

Here's the medicine. Take it back and boil it in water, and drink it at dawn and dusk.

"Ogier"

I will. Thank you.

He takes out a few coins, but the barber waves them off. In a place cut off from the world, money carries little weight. It's not what these people live for.

Keeper

The sky's cleared...

Ogier... I want to go to the apple grove.

"Ogier"

You need to rest.

Keeper

Take me there. I've made a great discovery... I must tell you about it.

"Ogier"

Here we are. What great discovery?

Keeper

Phew... I've discovered that this is the Apple Isle. We've already found it.

Your knight sets you down on a fallen log, then kneels to ease your injured leg into place. His gaze is intent and worried. Clearly, your revelation has failed to astonish him.

"Ogier"

But this isn't an island.

Keeper

Who says an island has to be in the sea? As long as it's cut off from everywhere else, it's an island.

Besides, there are fairies here.

"Ogier"

Fairies?

Keeper

Yes, there are lots of fairies on the isle. Some have the faces of lions, some have the scales of fish, and some shed their skin like snakes. They're the fairies living in a fairyland.

"Ogier"

Fairies... not monsters?

Keeper

Of course not! Fairies and monsters aren't the same at all.

Monsters eat people. They'll do anything to eat people. Sometimes they simply take a knife and kill you and eat you. Sometimes they spin lies, pen people up like livestock, and slice off their flesh to eat, piece by piece.

And they don't just eat it themselves, they make it into soup, into salted meat, into gruel, and feed it to other people.

Human flesh is everywhere. If you don't eat it, you starve. But anyone who eats it becomes a monster. So there are more and more monsters.

People don't eat people. Neither do fairies. Here, on the Apple Isle, they're clean.

"Ogier"

...

Then what about me? I'm not a person, nor a fairy. My hands are soaked in blood, and a demon lives inside me. You've seen it with your own eyes.

Why aren't you afraid?

Why should you be afraid? From the first moment you saw him, you knew he must be a knight.

Through the shadow that clings to him, you can still see him as a knight, so clear, so unmistakable, as if you'd seen it somewhere before.

What makes a true knight? Loyalty, valor, mercy, sacrifice, and...

His liege's accolade.

Keeper

Ahem... Then, by my authority as princess, I dub you a knight.

You defeated the monsters, won the Holy Grail, held off the demon, and protected me. You've fulfilled your promise and brought your princess to the Apple Isle.

No matter who you once were, in our story, you are a knight, and no princess would ever fear her knight.

You will always be my knight.

Your knight is stunned. He clutches his cloak with one hand, as though he could hide in its deep folds of shadow.

The cloak conceals every trace of the shadow. Only he knows what shame lies beneath that disguise.

A slender branch, still beaded with rain, comes to rest lightly on his shoulder.

A dream so old he has almost forgotten it suddenly comes true. Yet what sends a tremor through his soul is not joy.

It is fear.

The flames of fear rise from a bottomless pit, beneath his feet, above his head, in the terrified eyes behind narrow slits.

Scalding, warm, spraying from severed necks, welling from chests.

The flames writhe, driving the shadow into a frenzy. Fire and shadow have always been one.

It was a massacre after the war was over, dressed up as a decisive victory. There was no honor in it. No justice. Not for anyone.

The bloody ending stripped away every pretty lie. Death was only death.

His grand duke was dead. His princess was dead. Only the knight who had failed to protect anyone survived.

He cannot remember how he survived. Perhaps he didn't survive at all. Perhaps all that remains is a fallen monster, a vengeful wraith exiled to the world of the living.

Then slaughter fed new slaughter, and death begot more death.

His quest feeds only the flames he sought to quench, leading him further astray and ever closer to his doom. He had never believed he could be redeemed.

But... but...

Keeper

Ogier, Ogier? Hey, are you listening? I'm done; it's your turn.

"Ogier"

...

Yes, my lady.

Closing his misshapen eyes, the knight swears a solemn oath to a penniless princess.

"Ogier"

In the name of my lost homeland, I, Ogier, son of House Dansk, pledge you my fealty and homage.

I offer you my shield and my spear, the faith I have defiled, my abiding fear, and my broken heart.

I lost my name in the long night, but your call kindled the dawn.

An oathbreaker is no longer worthy of trust. But if your gaze would linger on me still, then...

I shall be yours until my last breath.

The end may stand for all eternity, casting its heavy shadow over all things, but until you reach it, you are still free to choose what you make of your fate.

A breeze, sunlight, the scent of ripe apples. Mist rises like clouds through the trees. The world is as lovely as a painting.

You laugh with delight. At last, a happy ending for the princess and her knight.

But you know the story goes on. Life doesn't stop at the last page.

Panicked Villager

Who's still asleep? Wake them up! The flood's coming!!

The night fuels the fury of the downpour. Ten thousand stones rain from the sky, and the muddy water surges over the riverbanks with the thunder of charging warhorses.

Figures dash back and forth, shouting, hammering on every door and window.

Panicked Villager

Open up! Flood's coming! Run!

But the fairies can only hobble, stumbling across the uneven low ground. You know they will never make it.

BOOM!!

A crash makes your heart lurch. But the flickering torches barely pierce the darkness. People look about in confusion, unable to tell what is about to give way.

Terrified Villager

The dam, it's the dam!!

Panicked Villager

Run! Anyone who can, get out, there's no time!!

Pleading, groaning, wailing. The paradise of your dreams teeters, about to crumble beneath the endless rain.

Before a boundless ocean, every island is hopelessly small.

Your knight lifts you onto the edge of the cart. He takes off his cloak and wraps it tightly around you.

"Ogier"

Your Highness, I beg your leave to go and hold back the flood.

Keeper

Can you stop the flood?

"Ogier"

I will do all I can.

Keeper

Will you come back?

"Ogier"

...I will do all I can.

Keeper

No, no, I won't let you! You can't go!

Let's go, let's leave right now... there'll be another one. Apple Isle, Pumpkin Isle, anything, there'll be another one!

You clutch the hem of his clothes with all your strength, though in your heart you know it's futile. He's already made his choice.

"Ogier"

Your Highness, do not weep for me.

Ogier bows to you, as gentle and faithful as any knight in any story.

"Ogier"

In a world overrun with monsters, the one thing I can do for you is to protect this paradise for humankind. It is my duty, and my honor.

I am not going to my end, but beyond it, for I have already found my dawn.

I will still watch over you from the place where the sun rises.

Shadow gushes out in place of blood, pouring into the roaring flood.

A person would vanish into those waters in an instant. But the shadow remains.

It writhes. It surges. It gathers.

It becomes a shield, a wall, and finally an unbreakable dam.

You stare hard into the deepest dark, until the ox-cart rounds a bend and the river slips from sight.

At last, you break down and sob.

Keeper

It's a promise. I'll wait for you, always. My knight will come back.

On a new Apple Isle... where the sun rises.

You never hear from your knight again.

He fulfilled only half his vow, yet left you with a promise so cunning that even when you cry yourself to sleep, you still look forward to tomorrow.

Because a new sun will rise. Every day. Without fail.
