1. Heart of a Fledgling, before the fight

110 lines

The Twin Divi shall bear His will, bringing the just Lightbearer to the mortal world.

The Silver One shall bring the innocent a purified land, leading all the righteous to a paradise free of suffering forever.

AF 31@1 After the Remouahe Operation

Maids of identical stature and stride, draped in gauze, move silently like shuttles through the chambers of the Divus.

They serve the Divus in all aspects of daily life, from sleeping and washing to changing clothes and eating meals.

Silent, masked, without desire or need, they are the ones closest to the Divi, yet also the ones most distant from them.

Only those still burdened with sin may not defile the soul that calls for the arrival of the god.

Pollux

Why is this dish the same as the one from two days ago? Take it away, and don't make such a basic mistake again.

Given the order, the maid bows her head and takes the tray away. Castor starts to speak but still says nothing.

Castor

(...That's actually something I like.)

He knows his younger brother no longer remembers the past.

Castor

(The Church twisted him into this... I will find a way to escape with him again, no matter what it takes.)

He quietly looks away, watching the maids carrying ceremonial robes and vessels file into the palace entrance.

Castor

(That's an outfit worn only when attending the Wick-Lighting Ceremony...)

After that one escape, neither he nor Pollux was ever allowed to attend any ceremonies again.

Beside him, Pollux sets down his knife and fork, politely wipes his mouth, and looks at him with contempt.

Pollux

Stop with that stupid expression, Castor. The Church has important guests visiting today; don't bring shame to our title as the Twin Divi.

...

Following the squire's guidance, Castor and Pollux make their way past countless worshippers bowing their heads toward the highest point of the altar.

The rarely seen Lantern chats happily with the visiting guest, showing a joyful smile.

Juliette

With your talent and insight, the Lantern will surely get closer to Him with your help.

When approaching them, Pollux immediately lowers his head and performs the standard greeting etiquette.

Pollux

Hail, Most Revered Holiness and honored guests. We stand before thee as the Twin Divi, Pollux and Castor.

Castor, a half-beat slow, stares blankly at the man standing beside Juliette, and finally, together with Pollux, slightly bends forward under the knife-like gaze.

Juliette

Lord Karnak, this is the masterpiece of the Church of the Lightbearers after years of effort, our Twin Divi.

Karnak

Oh? What an interesting... invention.

After the ceremony, Castor looks up and locks eyes with that exceptionally opulent and flamboyant man for a brief moment.

Amidst that amused smile, Castor silently steps behind Juliette, yet a sense of foreboding surges within him that he can hardly suppress.

Lantern Squire

Please take your seats, the Wick-Lighting Ceremony is about to begin.

That surging impulse of clamor grips his heart, yet Castor can only meekly lower his head and quietly watch the ritual proceed.

Karnak sits with the Twin Divi upon the dais, where they sit rigidly upright, he sprawls like a ruler, looking down at the hall and at Juliette as she enters the ritual's heart.

Castor

(Or perhaps he is a ruler indeed?)

Juliette

Today, another Wick inspired by the Lightbearer is to return to the pure and suffering-free land of Innocence.

We have gathered here to help her complete the final Purification, liberating her soul from the tainted mortal world.

Here begins the ritual. Put out the sinner's light.

Countless followers form a massive inverted triangle. The lanterns in their hands extinguish one by one, leaving only Juliette's lantern in the center lit, like the pupil of a giant triangular eye.

Everyone chants the obscure scripture under Juliette's guidance, then watches as the Wick standing at the bottom of the triangle solemnly steps into the large Holy Lantern.

The devoted Wick cuts through her flesh without hesitation as the confession pours out, dripping with her sinful blood.

Juliette

I will pray for you, one who is about to step onto the land free from suffering.

In a dazing incantation, Juliette approaches the Holy Lantern and uses her lantern to ignite the blood mixed with specks of D-Slime.

Wick

AAAHHHHHH...

The explosive flame instantly illuminates the surrounding darkness. A shrill wail bursts from the Wick's painful instinct. The burning humanoid figure rolls within the Holy Lantern with a series of thumps.

Juliette

The light has come; the Wick that burns itself will surely be redeemed.

Countless silent figures sway in the darkness under the glow of the fire, watching as the person within the Holy Lantern shrinks and curls like a wick consumed by flame.

Karnak raises an eyebrow and suddenly turns to Castor and Pollux.

Karnak

It looks really painful. If she regrets it at this moment, can she still get out of that?

Castor hesitates for a moment, and Pollux looks slightly annoyed as if offended, but seeing Karnak's serious expression, he can only manage a forced smile.

Pollux

Wicks are all individuals who have been inspired by the Lightbearer; to be able to completely purify Sin is an honor they long for.

Soon, in the envious gaze of everyone, a piece of silver core as big as a fingernail is scooped up and displayed from the remaining ashes, like a glorious omen.

Juliette

The Silver One has bestowed His Sacred Body, atoning for this person's sins. This person's soul shall surely enter the innocent pure land. Let us be grateful for His mercy. Forever may the Light shine.

Lightbearer Devotee

Forever may the Light shine!

Castor observes everything that is routine for everyone, but the usual sorrow is still firmly overshadowed by chaotic thoughts at this moment.

Amidst the fervent prayers of the congregation, buzzing like insects, he secretly glances at the man who is neither smiling nor frowning, even appearing somewhat bored. A strong, fate-like premonition in his heart keeps screaming.

Castor

(He can definitely change many things. Perhaps, he can also change my fate and Pollux's.)

...

The ceremony ends, and the esteemed guest is invited by Juliette to join for dinner.

Karnak

How come the two of you, our Twin Divi, won't join us?

Juliette

The Divi live in seclusion on a daily basis and do not participate in banquets within the Church. They came here today only to pay homage to you.

Indeed, Castor and Pollux are not permitted to stay out for too long.

On the way back to the quarters, Pollux's elated demeanor finally calms down, even revealing a hint of lingering loneliness.

Pollux

The banquet must be lively. I really wish to taste the sweet rice wine used to entertain honored guests...

Originally this is just a barely audible mutter, but Castor, who is silently following behind, suddenly stops in his tracks.

Castor

Then, I'll go ask for some wine for you; I suppose Lady Lantern will be lenient.

Almost as soon as the words are spoken, Castor turns and walks toward the banquet, leaving Pollux standing there in a daze, muttering quietly.

Pollux

I was just saying it off the top of my head. Why is he being so attentive today...

...

Although Castor usually obeys Pollux's requests very obediently, almost to the point of doing whatever he asks, this time, he doesn't come for him.

Castor

(I must see that esteemed guest one more time.)

Castor stops at a corner outside the lobby. It is only now that he realizes how reckless the alluring impulse he just felt is.

Castor

You can't just barge into the banquet; that would be too abrupt. But when the banquet ends, Lady Lantern will surely appear as well...

Perhaps I should first inquire about the guest's schedule and then find a way to create some chance encounters...

Castor mutters to himself, lost in wild thoughts, not even he can clearly explain why he cares so much about that man.

Just as he clenches and unclenches his fist, preparing to leave, a rich and cheerful voice suddenly comes from behind him.

Karnak

Are you looking for me?

Castor turns in surprise; the noble guest who was just lingering in his mind stands right in front of him, like a hallucination.

Karnak

Not a hallucination.

Castor

But aren't you... Then what about Lady Lantern?

As if he has seen through the slightest panic and concern in Castor's heart, the man named Karnak casually snaps his fingers.

Snap...

The brightly lit, gilded hall suddenly dims, and a hazy, veiled glow envelops the surroundings, as if both of them have fallen together into a space of dreams.

Karnak

Don't worry, no one will know about our conversation.

Castor glances around, then quickly calms down. For some reason, he particularly believes in the man's strength at this moment.

Karnak

So, this secret meeting can now begin. This... esteemed Divus, what is it that you wish to discuss with me?

Castor

I...

Karnak

Hush, let me guess, you have a strong desire in your heart, so intense that it burns you day after day, yet you can't find the chance to fulfill it...

Castor tries hard to suppress the tension and shock in his heart, not allowing himself to show even the slightest bit.

Perhaps that guest is truly able to read people's minds, but he doesn't state any specific facts, and Castor won't admit to any guesses himself.

Castor

I don't know what you're talking about.

The man chuckles, casually shrugs his shoulders, and slowly strolls to the large glass window of the hall. He looks up and admires the moonlight.

Karnak

You misunderstood. I have no intention of peeping into others' privacy; after all, I'm a person who respects others' wishes very much.

Your heart tells me you've already prepared everything. Although you're a bit... reserved with words, I happen to be too lazy to listen to any roundabout nonsense.

The man, moving as if strolling through his own palace, turns around and offers a small box to Castor.

Karnak

If you need it, I've got some magical little trinkets here that might be able to help you out and make you... your true selves.

Castor opens the box and sees two pills inside, one black and one white, as if representing the two choices Fate offers.

Karnak kindly explains the pill's effects to Castor, so smoothly and considerately that it is almost unbelievable. Is what inside the box a golden apple bringing hope, or the devil's temptation?

Castor

Grateful beyond words, but... is there any other cost to taking such a miraculous treasure?

Karnak

That's up to your own judgment.

Castor looks at Karnak's face against the moonlight, unable to clearly discern the expression on it.

Only a faint layer of moonlight outlines the figure, as if a deity has arrived.

Karnak

Now, you may start praying to your god of pure silver, Lord Divus. Good luck.

...

Pollux

Why did it take so long to come back? Did you go to the kitchen to brew wine?

Castor places the wine jug he is holding on the table, offering an apologetic smile to his angry younger brother.

Castor

I'm sorry, Lady Lantern has been in discussions with important guests, and I didn't dare to disturb her. However, I have fetched for you the sweet white wine you love.

Pollux

I knew it all along. I just thought maybe this rotten piece of wood had suddenly sprouted, but you're still as useless as ever.

Castor

Sorry...

Pollux huffs discontentedly, but very sensibly says nothing more, slowly drinking while being served by the maid.

Castor sits shyly with his head down, but he gently caresses the intricately decorated small box hidden in his sleeve.

The carving depicts a fully winged angel descending leisurely from the kingdom of heaven to the human world.

2. Young Runaways, before the fight

112 lines

The sleeping quarters at night are so silent that a falling needle can be heard. All the squires have left, and there are no more pairs of eyes watching everywhere here.

This has always been the most free and happiest secret time for the twins, at least it used to be.

Pollux

Hmm...

Pollux, who is fast asleep, turns over. Amidst his long, gentle breathing, a shadow quietly appears at his bedside, casting a shape on his face.

Castor

...

(Although he's now spoiled and temperamental, when he's asleep, he's still no different from before.)

Castor slowly opens the box he received from Karnak, takes out the black pill, and places it into Pollux's mouth.

In an instant, the tiny pill melts and vanishes like a wisp of smoke. Like a patient hunter, he continues to wait quietly, waiting and waiting.

Finally, the gentle, rising and falling breath slowly fades away.

...

Castor passes by one corner and fork after another, avoiding hidden outposts along the way. He forward and pauses at times, yet without any hesitation.

He has prepared for this day for far too long.

Lantern Bearer

Lord Divus... What are you doing?

Castor supports Pollux, whose head is hanging low, and calmly glances at the patrolling Light Guards.

Castor

My younger brother is feeling unwell in his stomach and needs to go to the restroom. Tomorrow, you should check with the person responsible for preparing today's dishes to see what went wrong.

Lantern Bearer

...Yes.

One step, two steps, Castor's pace shows not the slightest panic, and his breathing does not waver even a bit.

He walks steadily toward the end of the corridor, toward the wish in his heart that has never been extinguished.

...

Church of the Lightbearers Underground Warehouse

The Church of the Lightbearers, though now hidden in the unknown darkness, still extends its influence around the world thanks to the inexhaustible wealth and power of the Athanasios family.

They hide behind one corporation and foundation after another, funding and collaborating with numerous "seance" test subjects.

Among these crates about to be sent to various partners, some contain flashy gold and silver cash, some hold taboo and eerie experimental materials, and some even contain unknown living creatures.

Castor passes by one box after another with an inexplicable smell, ignoring the occasional eerie sounds coming from the corner.

At last, his steps come to a halt before a row of cargo crates. On those heavy boxes is a small label, which reads...

Castor

Persepolis of the Sumorite Kingdom...

In the few books he has read, the description of the desert is only briefly mentioned, it is filled with endless golden sand, scorching sunlight, and plants covered in spikes.

It is a desolate place, originally not suitable for survival. Yet within its rare oasis, a brilliant civilization and cities have miraculously gathered.

Castor

Only here can we temporarily escape their sight. Only this way can we make the current Pollux leave with me...

He whispers, gently placing the cold-bodied Pollux into one of the cargo crates.

Castor

The tumbleweed that travels with the wind, the camel with mountain-like humps on its back, the mother tree said to protect all living things, and the oasis flowing with clear, sweet water...

There are so many things we haven't seen yet... You'll definitely like them, right?

...

Silent footsteps move step by step toward the sleeping quarters. Before the goods are dispatched at dawn tomorrow, Castor must hold off the clergy to ensure Pollux is successfully sent out.

Once exposed beforehand, it is only a matter of time before Pollux is discovered in the cargo box.

Castor

(This is the last chance; it's absolutely impossible to make a mistake.)

Albino

Ah, Castor... My Lord, what are you doing here in the middle of the night?

An unexpected person suddenly appears around the corner, a pair of slender snake-like eyes scrutinizing Castor intently.

Castor

...Pollux couldn't sleep, so he sent me out to get him some warm milk to drink.

Albino

I see. You're still being commanded by that noble even in your sleep, just as expected of their usual capriciousness.

Castor

Just doing something for my younger brother. There's nothing about being capricious or not. If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave, Sir Albino.

Castor calmly nods and passes by Albino.

The Serpent Man, lost in thought, watches his back disappear before turning to look toward the direction Castor came from, happily flicking his scarlet tongue.

Albino

That direction, heh...

...

The Second Day Morning

Lantern Squire

Lord Divus, it is time to get up and wash.

Precise as a clock, the maid appears on time in the sleeping quarters and walks toward the bed.

Castor

Shh... do not speak.

Castor sits by Pollux's bedside, turns to glare at the maid, and whispers sternly.

Lantern Squire

...Castor, my lord?

Castor

Pollux had a stomachache all night, and I just managed to get him to sleep. Do not wake him.

Lantern Squire

Stomach pain? How could that be, he was fine all day yesterday...

The maid looks at the bulge on the bed, where a part of Pollux's robe peeks out from under the blanket. She hesitates for a moment but still moves forward.

Castor

Step back, insolent girl. I have not even held you accountable for your failures yet.

Castor furrows his brow sternly. His usually silent and dull face appears surprisingly cold and ruthless.

Castor

Should any among you conspire against the Divus... know this: All who shelter the guilty shall share in their condemnation.

If something really happens to Pollux... you probably won't want to experience the punishment of being slowly skinned and having your heart removed.

Lantern Squire

This...

Castor

I already sent a Light Guard to investigate this matter last night. Go, find him, and make sure to figure out what was wrong with yesterday's meals.

The maid stands stunned by Castor's scolding. Cold sweat beads on her forehead as she submissively lowers her head.

Lantern Squire

As you command, but today's schedule for the two of you...

Castor

Cancel the morning's training first. I will personally explain to Lord Albino. Everything must prioritize Pollux's condition.

Go find the Church doctor and have him come exactly two hours from now to see Pollux. Not a minute earlier or later.

As for now, you may all step back for a moment; Pollux needs to rest.

...

Without clocks, they count silently. In countless tedious days and nights, timekeeping becomes a kind of instinct for the twins.

After persuading the maid to leave, Castor obtains a precious moment of respite, but this is only temporary.

He sits by Pollux's bedside with a concerned expression, occasionally adjusting the blanket and comforting his sleeping brother.

Ten minutes, twenty minutes, half an hour.

Castor

(The longer it drags on, the more likely someone in the Church will begin to suspect something.)

That so-called two-hour rest time is also just a smokescreen.

Castor

(As is customary, the cargo should have already left the Church by now.)

Castor no longer hesitates. He immediately rises and leaves the quarters, careful to avoid being seen.

The route rehearsed countless times in his mind now becomes reality.

Corridor.

Altar.

Even the waterways within the mountains.

Castor

Do not rush, do not rush...

Precise and decisive, like mechanical movements, his pulse strives to stabilize yet becomes increasingly intense.

During his sprint, Castor's blood burns, and his heart seems ready to jump out of his throat.

Castor

Huff... Huff...

He gasps for breath, as if already tasting the sweetness of freedom in the air.

Buzz...

A wave of dizziness that is hard to resist makes Castor stagger. A muffled whisper echoes from afar, it is the incantation used by the Lantern to attack the spirit. They are coming.

Castor

It is fine, they have not caught up yet. As long as I make it before that...

He is very close to the exit at the end of the road; all he has to do is crawl through one more narrow hole, turn a corner, and climb a steep slope.

Castor

Huff, huff...

Castor flaps like a dying bird, his wings striking the walls repeatedly.

When his eyes cannot see, he uses his ears to listen; when his ears cannot hear, he uses his limbs to touch.

He scrambles forward desperately, using both hands and feet, stumbling and crawling.

The cave's entrance melts into a hazy white light before him, pulling him forward.

Castor

Get out, I have to get out...

He climbs to the end of the slope.

Lantern Bearer

There he is!

The voice of the Light Guard comes from behind, but he pays no attention and continues running.

The end of the light approaches, ten meters, five meters... Castor's wings are spread; he is ready for flight.

Boom...

A deafening gunshot echoed through the narrow cave, and a spray of blood and pure black feathers violently scattered from the raised wings.

Castor

Ugh...

Castor collapses forward. Intense pain surges through his body from the bloody wound, and his wings uncontrollably spasm and curl.

Lantern Bearer

Don't struggle anymore, Lord Divus! You will never leave!

Shaking as he gets back up, Castor takes another step forward amidst the Light Guards' boastful shouts.

Castor

...No, nothing is eternal.

Blood flows along the path he treads. He raises his head, gazing at the nearby white glow. A furious snarl tears from his usually silent throat.

Castor

(The light of freedom... the exit is right here...)

Castor roars and leaps forward with all his might. Amid the exclamations behind him, he plummets straight down the cliff.

The world suddenly emerges as if from beyond a shattered fishbowl. Everything becomes clear under the sunlight, reflected in his lonely eyes. It is as if, many years ago, he and Pollux leaped into the sky for the first time.

Castor

(Forest, snowy mountain, sky and clouds, and the wind...)

I did it, Pollux.

In the icy wind high above, a pair of black wings spread open again. A bird flaps crookedly against the wind and flies into the distance.

3. Sand and Honey, before the fight

116 lines

A few days later

A weary figure steps onto the scorching dunes.

Castor

Persepolis of the Sumorite Kingdom...

Castor's injured black wings pitifully curl to one side. The wound heals and ruptures again from overuse, and dried blood scabs stick to his feathers.

Castor

Hiss... Fortunately, wings absorb too much heat in the desert; they are not suitable for long-distance flight.

Castor, enduring the pain, carefully puts on his cloak to shield himself from the sunlight and sand.

He looks around; endless yellow sand fills his vision. He tightens his grip on the package and map, resolutely walking into the desert's depths.

...

Trekking, endless trekking.

Soon the map becomes useless. Castor cannot tell if he has deviated from his path, blindly following the rising and setting sun and moon.

He is hot, thirsty, and at a loss, his canteen was emptied yesterday.

Castor

It is too hot... If I cannot find water today, I am afraid I will be stuck here forever...

At least Pollux might have a chance to escape after waking up in a few days.

Castor gives a bitter laugh, his feet moving mechanically.

Cacti, camels, and tribes with tents, none of the things depicted in the manuscripts are here. It is desolate, with nothing but sand and gravel.

Castor

An oasis flowing with sweet spring water... perhaps it is just a dying traveler's hallucination...

Is this all there is...? To die with hope, what a beautiful legend...

In a desperate attempt to comfort himself, his vision begins to blur. The strength he mustered to escape the Church is completely spent.

Castor

If I die here, I will probably be buried quickly by the yellow sand. Cleanly forgotten... that is not bad.

Just as he staggers up another dune and collapses from exhaustion, a miraculous hint of green suddenly appears at the edge of his vision.

A clear river, low shrubs, and a few fennec foxes drinking water.

Castor

...That is!

An Oasis.

Castor swallows hard. His legs regain strength, and he stands up to head toward the water.

...

Water gushes down his throat. Castor exhales a long breath, collapsing onto the sand as if reborn.

He looks at the red-footed falcon circling in the sky. The joy in his heart is quickly overshadowed by worry. An unknown fear torments him.

Castor

Now I may be heading in the right direction, or I may have completely lost my way...

Even if I can barely hold on, leaving this oasis means the next time I may not be so lucky.

...Hmm?

Castor stands up. He sees a strange shadow among the forked streams not far away.

He approaches and sees the figure floating downstream, a woman with eyes tightly closed and skin like honey.

...

Castor drags Thais from the water and stands helplessly. Lacking first aid knowledge, he can only gently push her shoulder.

Thais

Ugh...

Her eyes open and turn to the disheveled Castor.

Thais

Oh, thank you for waking me. If it were not for you, I might have slept on indefinitely, little traveler.

As she stands, the dynamic between them seems to completely reverse.

Thais

Looking at your condition... have you encountered trouble?

Castor looks at Thais's composed face. Though she smiles gently, he feels a powerful sense of being viewed from above.

Yes, it is a powerful sense of being viewed from above.

Castor

(She understands the desert, she's dangerous, but... she's also powerful and seems to have no malice. She can help me.)

Castor hesitates for just a moment before making a decision based on beastly intuition.

Castor

My name is Castor, and I am looking for a merchant caravan heading to Persepolis. Sumorite's Persepolis.

But... I do not know if I am lost...

Thais does not laugh; she continues to smile, gazing at him with a touch of affection.

Thais

Pitiful child, that is a city far away. Are you going to cross the entire desert on foot?

Sigh, what is the name of the caravan you mentioned?

Castor

I am closing in quickly, and they are still carrying cargo. I should catch up soon.

Thais nods and bends down to scoop up river water.

Thais

You must realize by now that without water, the yellow sand swallows all life.

The only way to survive the desert is to follow the water.

Water droplets slide down her fingertips as she traces a winding map in the sand.

Thais

To reach the city on the other side, you must pass through the hub near the central water source, Clenis.

It is a well-known trade hub; the caravan would certainly stop there to resupply. It is common knowledge for those familiar with the desert.

Thais's voice becomes somewhat muffled as she speaks.

Thais

But now, that is no longer a good place to settle...

Castor

What?

Thais

Nothing much. By coincidence, I also need to go to Clenis. Shall we be traveling companions? We can offer each other some comfort in these endless sands.

I will be your guide, and you will be in charge of protecting me.

...

Castor has no reason to reject such a lifeline.

Castor

(Protect her...?)

Although he does not believe her vague explanation, he can see she is indeed very weak.

Even with endless questions, this is not the time for suspicion. A guide who knows the desert is too valuable to lose.

Thais

That is a sand scorpion. Once the poison sac is removed, it is surprisingly tasty when grilled.

Why can you not find cacti? It is hard to locate them with human senses, but by following animal tracks, you will find surprises.

Lizards shift from foot to foot, sand snakes slither sideways, mice leap high, and fierce red hawks strike.

Castor keeps his eyes wide open, listening as Thais recounts the desert's creatures, climate, and survival techniques.

Thais

Little one, I have discovered you are not an outsider unfamiliar with the desert.

Thais rests her chin on her hand, watching as Castor clumsily threads the scorpion and flusteredly tosses a burning branch into the fire.

Thais

You lack all basic survival instincts, like a toddler who has just learned to walk.

Castor remains silent for a while before finally responding.

Castor

It could be said.

Thais looks at the dejected Castor. She skillfully strings more scorpions and leisurely grills them over the fire.

Thais

You have been worried this whole time?

Castor

...I am looking for my younger brother, my twin.

Castor looks up, gazing at the vast starry sky over the desert with confusion.

Castor

If I cannot find him this time, we might... never meet again.

Thais

I see. I do not think you need to worry too much.

Thais casually twirls the sand scorpion. Castor stares at the blackish creature, catching a faint, lingering scent.

Castor

Why?

Thais

Aram culture centers on reproduction. We believe children born on the same day share a fate. As for twins born clinging to each other... their fates are entwined for life.

So, at the next oasis of life, you will surely reunite.

Castor

Another legend...

Castor shakes his head, but a hint of hope flickers in his mind.

Castor

(If the Oasis and the desert civilizations are real, then can I believe this legend once again...)

In a trance, a faint smile appears on Castor's face, but it quickly turns into a serious expression.

Thais looks toward the distance. The silent night sky is suddenly torn by a long howl, a sound that belongs to no creature of the desert.

Castor

Hurry, our pursuers have come.

...

The freshly roasted scorpion falls to the ground. Castor quickly puts out the campfire and keeps running with Thais.

The giant hound's silhouette appears and disappears in the night. Juliette's voice comes from far behind.

Juliette

Castor, I already know you have placed Pollux in the cargo crate. The Church has locked onto the caravan's position and will retrieve Pollux shortly.

If you still care about your dear brother, just come back with me quietly. You would not want this moving story of escape to become a solo act, would you?

The core of the plan has been discovered. Although the Church's cargo trade is secretive, tracking and positioning methods likely exist. If Juliette is telling the truth...

Castor wavers for a moment, and his steps slow.

Thais

Did this insignificant, easily defeated threat make you give up your plan?

Castor

Thais...

Juliette

Sigh, you still want to run away? How cruel of you, brother. It seems I will have to impose a little punishment on Pollux before you are willing to consider coming back.

Castor

(No, I can't just surrender here, but if they hurt Pollux again...)

Thais

Believe me, in this desert, no lie can escape my notice; she is just bluffing.

Thais turns her head and gently narrows her eyes.

Thais

Juliette... I know her. She does not understand the desert that well.

Castor looks at the increasingly mysterious Thais before him and finally gives a firm nod.

The howl of the giant hound grows closer. The desert's moon now clearly illuminates the hound's scarlet pupils. Juliette raises the ritual mirror above her head, its surface reflecting the bloody moonlight directly toward the two of them.

Thais's expression turns cold and stern. She moves her hands as gracefully as in a dance. With a swift motion, the two of them transform into handfuls of yellow sand, vanishing into the endless dunes.

The giant hound, having lost its target, halts in confusion, huffing irritably from its nose.

Juliette

...Hmph.

...

At the break of dawn, the thriving town finally appears before the two who have traveled through the night.

Castor

Are you... okay?

Faced with Castor's worried gaze, a pale Thais gently shakes her head and looks toward the city gate where voices echo.

Thais

We have arrived. This is the Lustrous Pearl of the desert, the City of Clear Spring, Clenis.

4. Taxidermy, before the fight

135 lines

Golden morning light spills onto the streets. The city and its residents have already woken, as countless vendors gradually set up colorful canopies.

The city's abundant water supply attracts many tribes to gather around it. Even on days when no merchants arrive, the marketplace remains bustling and lively.

Vendor

Pearl, pearl, a rare Aequor giant pearl hard to find in the sky and difficult to discover on earth!

Pancake, grilled meat, tender little lamb!

The crowd flows like a river, from daily necessities like food and clothing to rare spices, cosmetics, and handwoven woolen blankets, everything imaginable can be found here.

Castor follows Thais past a dozen stalls. Once she begins picking out gems, Castor snaps out of his daze and hurriedly pushes forward to ask a vendor.

Castor

Have you seen a foreign merchant caravan recently?

Castor gestures a bit awkwardly.

Castor

They were about five or six people, at most ten or so, carrying five large crates that were as long as a person and half as wide.

The vendor introducing a turquoise stone looks at Castor for a moment, then turns back to make eye contact with Thais.

Castor

What? Do you even...

Castor's anxious expression reveals his confusion. The vendor covers her mouth and breaks into crisp laughter. Even Thais cannot help but smile helplessly.

Vendor

Customer, look around. What do you see?

Castor

Seen... prosperous trade?

Vendor

Right, this place has no shortage of merchants. With so many caravans coming and going every day, your caravan disappeared like a grain of sand falling into the desert...

Whoosh! Gone!

The vendor spreads her palm and exaggeratedly blows away the dust. Castor does not find the joke amusing.

The anxiety of being unable to control everything surges within him again. He is not ready to give up and goes along the road, asking at each stall one by one.

Vendor

No, never seen one.

It seems there is such a group of people, but it also seems not.

Merchant

Oh! They must have passed by here. Where did they go? How would I know? I did not follow them!

When he can no longer obtain even the slightest useful information, Thais finally speaks calmly.

Thais

Don't worry, relax a bit. That caravan must still be here.

Castor

But what if they leave before I find them? This city is too big...

Castor gazes weakly at the colorful tents and the small buildings made of sand and stone.

Castor

(Here is dozens of times larger than the church's base, yet it already took us many years to escape from the small church...)

Thais

A very simple truth: Even nocturnal silver lizards will quietly lie buried beneath the sand piles during the day.

Since you said it was a merchant caravan with an important mission, they would definitely choose a more expensive, quiet, and private inn to rest at.

There would not be more than ten such inns in Clenis.

Castor closes his eyes and silently calculates a search plan.

Castor

You're right, I was too hasty.

(Be patient, Castor, just a little more.)

He clenches his fists and continues to advise himself.

...

However, fortune does not bless him easily. Until the sun sets in the west, they cannot find a trace of that merchant caravan.

Castor

If I knew more about the caravans...

Castor punches the wall made of roadside sand and soil.

Thais

Hush, even though you are the older brother, were you not both born around the same time?

A person who carries everything on their back will only be crushed by exhaustion.

Thais's infinitely forgiving expression gives him a strange sense of reassurance. Castor calms down. He lifts his head, his eyes stubborn as stone.

Castor

...No way, I won't fall before he obtains his freedom.

Thais

Well, this strong brother of mine, we should find a place to rest for a while.

Thais soothingly pats Castor's head and looks toward the city, which grows quiet as daylight fades.

Thais

It is getting dark.

The two of them find an inn near the uninvestigated southern part of the city. Night falls just as they step through the door.

The bustling daytime market has dispersed. The noisy streets are gone, replaced by complete silence.

Castor casts a suspicious glance at the door, then finally approaches the candle-lit counter.

Castor

Hello, we would like two rooms.

The shopkeeper, head hanging low as if dozing off, remains indifferent, as though frozen in a sweet dream.

The inn is shrouded in absolute silence, with only the quiet crackling of the candle's flame.

Castor glances back at Thais, nods in response to her cautious look, and walks toward the shopkeeper.

Castor

Hello?

Castor slowly reaches toward the sleeping man's nose.

He moves his fingers closer and closer to the humped nose.

Finally, he feels a faint current of air brush against his hand.

Castor

He is still alive.

Castor lets out a slight sigh of relief and turns his head, only to see Thais's pupils suddenly constrict.

Thais

Step back!

A disgusting sound of swallowing and vomiting comes from behind. Castor barely turns his head. Several black twigs stained with flesh spread out from the man's seven orifices.

Under Thais's instructions, he evades the writhing branches and digs out the monster's heart, ending this seemingly immortal life.

He feels his heart pound as he stares at the mangled corpse, checking to confirm the creature is truly dead.

Castor

Huh...

Castor watches the dense, vine-like branches extracted from the heart, struggling to suppress the urge to vomit.

He is accustomed to the bloody rituals of the Church, but this is his first time actually killing someone.

Castor

(But... is such a being still considered human?)

Thais gently brushes her bloodstained hands over the corpse's face, closing the clouded eyes.

Castor

Now, all of this, you owe me an explanation.

Thais

I will, don't worry. I will tell you everything you want to know.

Thais picks up the mass of writhing roots and soothes it bit by bit.

Like a crying child finding a mother's embrace, the roots gradually still, shrinking and regressing into a small section of blackened branch.

Thais

This is a branch of the mother tree.

People in this city probably all have such branches spread over their bodies.

Thais closes her eyes with almost pity, and her hands glow with a strange glimmer.

The black branches slowly fade in color, becoming transparent and soft, then gradually melting into a pool of clear water.

The quiet streets outside echo with dragging footsteps. Sounds of gnawing and vomiting branches rise like distorted howls, inching closer.

Under the dim candlelight, Thais raises a handful of water and extends it toward Castor.

Thais

Drink it.

...

Castor

So, they come from a seed you once spread, and now that seed has gone out of control, which is why you are here...

Castor sits on the cushion in the inn, trying to suppress the queasiness from drinking that unknown liquid with rational thinking, but his face remains pale.

Thais

Since the Mother Tree was corrupted, my existence and power have been continuously weakening. Many things once spread for breeding also go out of control and degenerate along with the Mother Tree.

After the Mother Tree returned to the Holy River, I heard their painful calls while in a deep sleep, so I woke once again to take them away, allowing them to return to the mother body and the Holy River as well.

Castor pauses and does not continue to press about the so-called "mother" and her connection to Thais.

Castor

So you are going to... handle all the city's residents in the same way?

Thais

No, that was merely to grant you the breath of the Mother Tree, so that they regard you as a companion.

Thais quietly walks to the door of the inn, watching the parasitic monsters outside continue to wander blindly in the absence of living people.

Thais

I planted only one Seed here at the time. The rest are branches from its reproduction.

I want to find that Seed, just like you have to find your younger brother. That is our mission.

Castor

Just now you said... presence? What happens if they detect the presence of a living person?

Thais

They are always in a state of hunger and thirst; night is their time to hunt. They devour, fuse, or turn people into their companions.

Castor stands up abruptly.

Castor

We have to find Pollux now. The effects of that pill are about to wear off, and he could wake at any moment!

...

The two of them move in silence among the dreamwalking monsters.

Castor remains silent, avoiding the pitch-black branches on the monsters that writhe and drip unknown liquid.

He sees familiar faces that he seemed to have seen during the day, many of whom had even spoken to him.

At this moment, they hunch their backs, their eyes roll wildly, and they open their mouths to an inhuman limit, emitting waves of unconscious, eerie growls.

Castor

But why were the residents in the city showing no signs of anything unusual during the day?

Thais

Little bird, have you heard of plants that grow traps to catch insects?

The city still attracts new prey. These parasitized people still crave reproduction, fresh flesh, and new companions.

Still human as they once were, they long for more visitors to come into this trading city.

They live and sleep according to the rhythm of daylight. When that lingering consciousness falls into a deep sleep, the branches take over those bodies.

That is why I said that caravan must still be in the city. They cannot leave; it will devour everything.

...

Thousands of monsters act upon simple instincts, not to be awakened or disturbed.

They move like two strangers who mistakenly entered the realm of the dead, drifting downstream and fighting upstream among the monsters, shuttling back and forth all night long.

Castor holds his breath, tightening his spirit as he searches, always fearing that he will suddenly hear Pollux's scream.

Finally, as he passes the fifty-first intersection, he sees the familiar cargo crates through a gap in the back door of an inn.

Castor and Thais exchange a glance, then he leads the way into the courtyard. The monsters wandering there pause briefly before losing interest in the two uninvited guests.

Castor

(So this is Persepolis...)

Castor lifts the cover and runs his hands over the metal engraved label on the box, his hands trembling as he unlocks each box.

Castor

(Not this one, and not this one either...)

Thais looks into the distance at the pale skyline, then turns back and gently urges him.

Thais

Faster, we are running out of time.

Castor blinks in slight surprise. Just as he prepares to open the last crate, a sudden sound of branches rubbing against flesh and stirring comes from the courtyard.

Sunlight pours in, the world awakes, and light and darkness reverse. A sudden, powerful shout abruptly awakes the entire inn.

Innkeeper

There is a thief!

A caravan transporting goods also discovers them and rushes over with several people dressed as shopkeepers.

Castor turns toward the rising sun, finally realizing the situation. He looks at the last unopened cargo box, then at the approaching crowd.

Castor

(Since I cannot escape from these people with the box, I might as well...)

Wings flutter behind him as he crouches like a beast, ready to start killing again, when Thais pulls him back and shakes her head.

Thais

No, they have already been linked by that very first Seed; everyone is a branch spreading from the same origin.

I cannot calm so many hearts at once; acting rashly would only awaken more of the tentacles.

Let us leave first and look for a chance to come back; at least there will not be too much danger during the day.

Castor looks at the cargo box just inches away and, in the end, follows Thais out of the inn amidst the shouts of the pursuers.

...

What does it feel like when someone dies and comes back to life?

Pollux never imagined he would experience these feelings. In his sleep, he fell into a dark chaos, entering a narrow space that felt like a mother's womb.

Unable to move or awaken, he continues to drowsily drift off in lazy peace, as if wholeheartedly accepting a sweet death.

Is it that the Lightbearer wants him to end like this, returning to the pure land of bliss? Then he would kneel in gratitude, accepting this gentle decree.

But, great Silver One, why does such an eternal land of tranquility have so much noisy disturbance? Is that a sin yet to be atoned for?

Pollux opens his eyes, but what he sees is not the pure land he imagined, it is instead several weathered faces above him.

A caravan member, having just checked the other boxes, looks down with confusion and meets Pollux's equally puzzled gaze.

Pollux

...Ah!!!

5. The Hunt, before the fight

113 lines

Pollux sits up abruptly and flips out of the cargo box.

Pollux

Who dares to show disrespect to Divus? Do you know what a sin it is to kidnap Divus?

Pollux controls his weakened limbs and immediately straightens up to bark a scold, like an angry cat.

Caravan Leader

So this is the Divus...

Pollux

You... do not know I am Divus?

Pollux takes a step back as the caravan members' eyes shift from confusion to gloom, and he slowly edges outward.

The leader gives a slight wave, and several tall figures chase him out the door amid Pollux's shouts of Impudent! and How dare you!

Caravan Members

This... leader, what should we do with this Divus?

Caravan Leader

Isn't he already in our cargo hold?

If we catch him, we have one more cargo. If we do not, we say we know nothing about it. As long as we deliver the goods safely...

...Where? The leader cannot quite remember, but in any case, as long as the cargo is delivered safely, their task is over.

...

Pollux

Huff, huff...

Pollux presses tightly against a dark, narrow alleyway, trying to suppress his breath after the frantic run.

Pollux

Damn infidels...

He peeks out with half an eye, watching the laborers run off, and finally lets out a long sigh.

Pollux

I was clearly sleeping well in the palace, why did I wake up and...

He thinks about the memories before and after his resurrection, still not knowing how he ended up here. But as for the one responsible, it is not hard for him to guess.

Pollux

Besides my stubborn brother, who else would bring me all the way to this cursed place.

Pollux offers a mocking smile. Before his lips can fully stretch, his stomach lets out a thunderous growl.

Pollux

...

Forget it; there are more important things to worry about now than trying to figure out his wooden mind.

He straightens up, leisurely brushes off the wrinkles on his clothes, and combs his disheveled hair before walking out of the alley with his chin held high.

Pollux walks with each step measured precisely, his expression arrogant and indifferent as he moves along the center of the street.

In his nearly unchanging expression, the way he glances toward the stalls on either side is particularly noticeable.

Pollux

(Why are the patterns on the clothing here so chaotic and vivid? Is it some kind of curse mark that confuses the spirit?)

(These rough clay jars... hold water, yet they are the cups of this place?!)

(Oh? Those crystal stones that look like lake water are... No, no, Pollux, do not be deceived by these trinkets. Find real food to comfort your pitiful stomach!)

(What are these crumpled fruits... and what are those huge chunks of meat? Could they be monster flesh... eating it with their hands! How crude and uncivilized.)

Pollux goes through countless deliberations in his mind. Finally, he stops in front of the most "normal" pancake stall.

Pollux

Humble one, I now grant you the opportunity to serve the messenger of the gods.

The vendor and Pollux stare at each other for a while before the former finally speaks in fluent General tongue.

Crepe Vendor

Buy a pancake? How many would you like?

Pollux

(What is "buy"... probably a local dialect.)

Pollux lowers his eyelids and modestly glances at the steaming pancakes, then extends a finger to gently tap.

Pollux

Cut this item into small pieces, serve them on a silver plate, and present it to me with a knife and fork.

Crepe Vendor

...

A flatbread wrapped in brown paper is roughly handed to Pollux amidst the vendor's strange gaze.

Pollux

...That was rude! Well, this place has never been enlightened by the Lantern.

Overcome by hunger, Pollux does not bother with much etiquette. He bites into a piece of the bread and is slightly startled by the aroma of fresh dough and desert spices.

Pollux

This crude food is... surprisingly flavorful. Well, it seems even the foolish can bring some surprises.

Pollux devours a few mouthfuls greedily before leisurely wiping the corners of his mouth, then performs a gesture of prayer with evident pleasure.

Pollux

Well done, mortal. In the name of Divus, I shall pray for the Lightbearer's blessing, that the silver grace may shield you and purify the deep sin as black as night upon you...

The expected excited expression does not appear. The vendor, after a brief moment of surprise, extends both hands with fingers raised.

Crepe Vendor

One pancake, fifteen Crest.

Pollux

What? What Crest?

After realizing that Pollux has no intention of producing any silver or copper coins, the vendor finally begins to angrily roar.

Pollux

What's going on? I just recited the blessing incantation clearly...

Pollux is startled. Although he cannot understand the desert dialect, he realizes it is not a sign of gratitude as the shopkeeper steps from the stall to grab him.

Pollux

Have you suddenly gone mad? Savage unbeliever! It is simply incomprehensible!

Misfortunes come in pairs. Amidst Pollux's shouts, caravan members discover him and begin chasing him from a distance.

Weakness makes Pollux hesitate for a moment. He grits his teeth and gives up the idea of fighting, starting his escape once again.

Pollux

We must follow the teachings of the Lightbearer, holding a heart of compassion to guide the ignorant people and help them cleanse their sins...

He tightly grips the half-warm flatbread as he runs wildly through the unfamiliar streets, praying and cursing all at once.

...

At the same time, when Castor and Thais sneak into the backyard of the inn again, they see the empty box.

Castor

Pollux! He must have woken up. I must find him before the Lantern finds this place...

Just as they prepare to step out the door, Castor quickly retreats and silently hides behind the door with Thais.

A group of Lantern Bearers moves with well-trained precision through the street, scanning every corner.

Castor turned his head back and gave Thais a bitter smile.

Castor

They have come.

...

Out of breath, Pollux stops, exhausted. He looks back toward the street entrance and finally can no longer see those annoying faces.

Pollux

Damn those commoners; the Lightbearer will surely punish their crimes...

He looks at the greasy pancake in his hand, stained with oil, and angrily flings it hard onto the ground.

Pollux

It is definitely that idiot Castor's fault. All of this is his doing... Ugh!

Just as he prepares to continue cursing, someone suddenly reaches out from a nearby dark alley, clamps a hand over his mouth, and drags him inside.

Pollux

You lowly creatures... Castor?!

Castor

Shh, be careful not to be discovered.

Even though the pursuers they worry about are different, Pollux still reluctantly lowers his voice.

Pollux

Hmph, I was just wondering where that useless guy had gone, leaving me to face those dangerous lunatics alone.

Pollux's earlier panic vanishes completely. As long as he is in front of Castor, he remains the lofty Lantern Divus.

He never cares to think about why he refuses to show even a hint of fragility in front of Castor.

He raises an eyebrow and questions him sternly, his face set against the complaint.

Pollux

Now I want to know: was it really you who brought me here?

Castor

Yes.

Pollux

Then, is it Lady Lantern's will that you have come here with me?

In the darkness, Castor blinks. Pollux sneers, his expression becoming even more indifferent.

Pollux

Well, the answer is obvious. You are not going to tell me about your grand plan for freedom again, are you?

Seeing Pollux turn to leave, Castor anxiously grabs his wrist.

Castor

This is our last chance! As long as we go out there, you will slowly remember everything!

The respect of those clergy is merely a means to control and deceive us. The so-called Divus is nothing but a tool for the Church to sacrifice!

Come with me. We are the only brothers left, aren't we, Pollux?

As if suddenly enraged by a certain word, Pollux violently pulls away and stares into Castor's eyes.

Pollux

Brothers?

Wake up, Castor. You and I are merely the Divi who serve the Lightbearer. Just because we must be harmonious in our daily lives does not mean I will tolerate your crimes!

You have abandoned the Church and defied the teachings of Lady Lantern. You have committed such a Sin, yet you take it upon yourself to drag me into this!

If the Lightbearer were to punish you now, I would not pray for you at all.

Castor watches his brother's increasingly unfamiliar expression and stands motionless in a daze.

Pollux snorts in disdain, yet seems to think something over.

Pollux

But... just now you seemed not to see the people chasing me. Why are you in such a hurry now?

It could not be that Lady Lantern has already come looking, right?

Pollux's gaze sharpens like a blade. Castor stammers, unable to speak for a while.

Pollux

As expected.

Goodbye then, my dear brother.

Pollux forcefully shakes off Castor and vanishes into the crowd on the street.

...

Since leaving the Church, Pollux has always been running.

He feels like a bird leaving its nest, escaping from the mouths of monsters and flapping his wings toward the embrace of home.

Perhaps the merciful Lightbearer has heard his prayer; the two sides searching for each other soon see one another from a distance.

Pollux rushes toward the group of Light Guards. He strives to maintain his composure and keep the joy on his face from becoming too obvious.

Pollux

I was forced. Please convey this to Lady Lantern, I shall demonstrate my loyalty!

He notices the Light Guards raising their lanterns as if to pay him a courtesy.

Familiar status, respect, and pure devotion, everything he relies upon for existence opens its embrace to him once more.

However.

Boom...

A merciless spell strikes him. Intense pain and spasms cause him to collapse like a beached fish.

Pollux

Hack...

Pollux struggles to lift his head. In his disbelieving gaze, the Light Guards who never dared to look at him now coldly look down upon him.

Pollux

How dare you...

They step toward him, raising the chains used for prisoners and sacrifices.

Pollux

Why... you cannot... I have not betrayed the Church!

With his head held high, he argues vehemently, yet the chains do not pause. They reach with a cold breath toward his noble and fragile neck.

6. A Drop of Tear, before the fight

98 lines
Pollux

How dare you... show such disrespect...

As if trying to prove something, Pollux trembles with agony as he attempts to push himself up from the ground.

That unbelievable expression slowly turns into anger, concealing the fear buried deep within his pupils.

He weakly tries to push the chain away to preserve his fragile dignity.

He wants to argue, to shout for help, but who can he turn to?

Pollux opens his mouth, managing only a weak breath.

The first to respond to him is not the great Lightbearer, nor Juliette, but a fierce and familiar gush of wind.

I am here.

Pollux lifts his head and looks at the pair of pure black wings in his vision, wings that fill him with both disdain and envy.

Pollux

Hmph...

Pollux lets out a low chuckle, then quickly lowers his head to hide his expression. Whether he laughs at Castor or himself, he does not know.

The wind drives away the Light Guards yet gently bypasses Pollux. A pair of hands helps him up from the ground.

Castor

Pollux! Are you alright?!

Pollux

...Take me with you.

Pollux looks at the Light Guards who still want to attack and whispers softly.

Without mockery or surprise, as if he has been waiting for those words, Castor nods.

Castor

Good.

The wind wraps around Pollux again, taking him away from those cold, piercing stares.

...

The gorgeous crimson of dusk shrouds the city. Once a beautiful oasis, it now wears only an illusory appearance; the curtain of horror is about to rise.

Castor

It is getting dark. The city will be filled with monsters. Drink this; it will ensure your safety.

Pollux drinks the sap Thais offers in silent obedience, then quietly curls up in the corner.

Thais

I already know where that Seed is. I will go destroy it tonight and end the suffering here.

Castor

But your strength...

Thais

It is nothing. That was my child too.

Castor

The people from the Church have surrounded this place. Pollux and I will find a way to leave as soon as possible. All along... thanks.

Castor hesitates, unable to say a true farewell. He has just experienced a meeting and must immediately face an abrupt parting.

Thais smiles and shakes her head, saying nothing more.

Thais

It is time to part ways, little one. Good luck to you both.

...

In the residual heat of the setting sun, Castor and Pollux move through the streets.

They intentionally show a shadow or a corner of clothing, luring squads of Lantern Bearers on patrol.

The news of the Divus draws the remaining Light Guards together. Shadows of purple silently surge in from all directions.

Castor looks back at the blood-red sunset, then turns and enters a crowded inn.

Juliette

Has our Divus finally stopped running?

The giant hound's saliva drips to the ground with its excited breaths. Juliette leaps down from the hound amidst a crowd of bowing figures.

Juliette

An inn... do you have any new friends here?

An eerie silence fills the air. In the vast courtyard, not even a single shopkeeper appears to ask questions.

The giant hound lifts its head, ears turning in confusion. It discovers that there is no sound in the entire city.

Juliette

...

As Juliette waves, several Light Guards carefully pull open the inn's door.

SQUEAK!

The creak of the door is jarring against the absolute silence. The giant hound takes an uneasy step forward, hearing faint rustling sounds from all around.

Everyone inside the inn is like a taxidermy specimen, frozen in time, standing rigidly in place.

A few Light Guards probe the residents and watch them collapse as if in a coma.

Lantern Bearer

Seems to still be alive, should be fine...

SPLISH...

No sooner are the words spoken than a writhing, pitch-black vine pierces through the Light Guard's chest, spreading across his body in an instant.

With no time to scream, the frail flesh is taken over by the will of the plant. Arms, organs, seven orifices... black lines surge and grow.

The Light Guard twists oddly before happily joining the tree's revelry. He opens his mouth, and new branches grow from it, dripping with viscous blood.

Lantern Bearer

Drink...

The innkeeper rises from behind the Light Guards, and all the sleeping figures stand up. Their heads turn in unison toward the fresh bodies; they have sensed the scent of prey.

Outside the inn, night falls. Within the thick darkness, the entire city awakens.

Something heavy suddenly crashes from the roof. With a loud thud, countless clumsy footsteps are drawn toward the noise.

On the rooftop, Castor retracts his hand and hides behind the wall, silently watching the scene below.

Pollux widens his eyes. He looks at the calm Castor and remains speechless.

Juliette's ever-present smile slightly cools. She looks toward the rooftop and then at the Light Guards struggling against the monsters. She almost wants to clap for Castor's growth.

She stands amidst the blood and gently claps her hands as if no one else were there.

Juliette

A great plan, a brave decision, no wonder you are the child raised by the Church for many years.

Castor looks at her calm demeanor with a heavy expression.

Juliette

As your teacher, I can give you an excellent evaluation, but now it is time to go back with me.

Juliette produces a dim mirror from somewhere. Smiling, she chants obscure incantations. Cold moonlight reflects on the mirror and gradually turns dark and scarlet.

A layer of blood-red film covers the moon. Under the blinding red light, all branches become still as if they have lost their life.

In the next instant, those branches begin to wildly writhe as if in agony. The flesh housing them swells and deforms, rolling and entangling together.

Lightbearer Devotee

@1@2...

A chorus of recitations hums from the congregants. Those who chant are freed from the torment of madness and begin to approach the terrace.

In the monster's ear-piercing howl, Juliette looks toward the rooftop and extends her hand, like a mother calling her child home.

Castor

Ugh...

Pollux

My head... it hurts so much!! Castor...

Castor grits his teeth and knocks out the rolling, shouting Pollux. He trembles as he opens the box obtained from Karnak and swallows the last pill.

Under the huge blood-red moon, Castor spreads his pure black wings. A luminous glow like sweet spring water flows over every feather, and his wounds vanish instantly into nothingness.

Castor

It is time to go.

Feeling the power coursing through his veins, Castor glares with an eerie green light. He gently lifts Pollux and leaps from the rooftop.

A howling hurricane of horror lifts countless Light Guards and monsters high into the air, tearing them apart into a bloody rain that showers behind him.

Wind propels Castor forward like a darting shadow. He readies a wind blade and strikes directly at Juliette's ritual mirror.

Castor

(As long as that mirror is destroyed, they will never catch up again...)

Castor closes in on Juliette. He sees her pupils slightly constrict with surprise.

But the smile he despises does not disappear; instead, it grows even more pronounced.

Castor

(Why? Does she have more ways to stop me? What exactly does she want to do...?)

Castor's heart races with an uneasy premonition. He instinctively tightens his grip on Pollux, preparing for a tough battle.

Just as he is about to reach Juliette, Castor hears a faint muffled sound through the howling wind.

Castor lowers his head. He sees a pool of blood blooming from his own chest.

As blood blossoms splatter, he sees a pale hand gently pull away from that crimson pool.

Castor opens his eyes in disbelief and slowly looks at Pollux, who remains expressionless in his arms.

Thud...

The soaring black bird crashes to the ground.

...

In his gradually darkening vision, Castor sees Pollux walking toward Juliette, obediently bowing his head in respect.

Pollux

Your Holiness, please witness my devotion to the Lightbearer.

Juliette, unharmed, smiles and pats Pollux on the head. She gives Castor a pitying glance.

The Light Guards close in, binding Castor's wings and body with heavy chains.

All pain fades from his body. A vast emptiness grows in Castor's chest, drawing him into a lonely darkness.

All pain fades from his body. A vast emptiness grows in Castor's chest, drawing him into a lonely darkness.

Castor helplessly recalls a memory in the darkness before he faints.

He recalls the moment Pollux pierces his chest. He sees a single crystalline tear slip down that cold face.

Castor

(But brother... If you truly feel that way, why are you crying?)
