Elworth's Returnee
10 scenes, 900 lines
1. Snowfield Stranger, before the fight
112 linesA month after the Remouahe Event
So this is Elworth?
That's right. Welcome home, Helot.
The mountain you want to climb, the person you want to see, they're both here.
Herbert extends a hand toward the snow-swept mountains ahead.
You're certain she'll come?
As certain as you coming here. Fate is calling. And no one refuses Fate, do they?
The girl grins at that, baring two sharp fangs.
No. No one refuses Fate.
Then our deal...?
Done. You and that crazy Lantern woman brought me here, so I'll lend you a hand along the way.
There is one thing I should warn you about.
You're still unstable. The closer you get to this mountain, the more likely you are to slip out of control...
Do whatever you came to do. Just stay out of my way.
The mountain, her, I can feel them both...
I'll kill them. And then I'll eat them.
The girl licks her lips, and a beastly grin spreads across her vicious face.
Forty miles away.
Coarse snow falls and piles on the girl's head until her hair goes white.
You reach out and gently brush it away.
You're really not cold?
Lily hesitates, hides her red, chapped hands behind her back, and shakes her head obediently.
Awakeners don't freeze to death.
Sorry, Lily... This job is a special case. Thank you for coming all the way out here with me.
It's okay. Lily was born here. Lily wants to help {Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper...
You sigh, ruffle the little head tilted up at you, then stand and look out at the endless white ahead.
The blizzard tears across the sky and settles over the faint ridges rising at the far edge of the polar ice, over the place you're headed.
One week earlier
Earthquakes, avalanches, volcanic eruptions, and Dissolution spreading farther than the eye can follow... This world never gives it a rest. A man can't even sit down and enjoy a drink.
...Professor Dexter?
Flames dance in the fireplace. The finely dressed middle-aged man sets down his newspaper and waves you over.
Ah, there you are! Please, have a seat.
Professor, I hear you needed me for something urgent?
Indeed. A matter of the utmost urgency.
Since the charity fund took over the Rye Sanatorium, they've handled the cleanup rather well.
One of the patients comes from a family that owns a winery. To show their thanks, they sent over two bottles of excellent homemade wine.
And drinking alone is such a dreary affair. What do you say, will you have a glass with me?
You look at the glass he holds out and sigh.
Professor, I've been rather busy lately... If there's nothing else, I'll be going.
There's no joy in a life that never stops to savor anything.
Ah, there is one other thing. Trifling next to a good wine, of course, but I suspect it will interest you.
What is it?
The friend who brought the wine told me one of the patients has taken a strange turn. Her moaning and howling echo through the asylum day and night, and her mind and body keep failing, the doctors are at a complete loss.
It's a terrible situation, no question, but psychiatric illness really isn't my field...
This has nothing to do with medicine, perhaps you haven't forgotten that a young Awakener lady is currently Linked to a patient at the Francis Asylum.
!!!
Give her... to me!
Pathetic. Just losing a Silver Link reduces you to this.
Francis is linked to Lily, so Helot's linker...
Doll covered this in "Fundamentals of Awakener Crafting and Linking", leaving aside the side effect that they can't be commanded or controlled, the best Link targets for an Awakener are the patients of this Sanatorium.
The sanatorium's patients...? Because their minds are unstable, they're not afraid of losing control?
Helot stands alone at the dock, her long hair dancing in the wind.
Ship's leaving. You boarding?
Helot waves, signaling the ferry to leave without her. She hasn't decided on her next stop.
Helot... She vanished after leaving the Sanatorium. Has something happened?
Look at this.
A newspaper, still smelling of fresh ink, slides across to you.
"On @2/@2/@2, a catastrophic avalanche struck Elworth, the polar snowfield. Measurements make it the largest on record. The cause remains unknown..."
El... worth?
Under the influence of the Awakener Helot, the patient keeps crying out a single name, Elworth, the very alpine snowfield where that avalanche struck not long ago.
And there are those visions you saw in your dream. Hard to forget, aren't they?
The visions in the dream, Helot's movements, this abnormal avalanche, everything points to the same place...
Symbols of the Church of the Lightbearers appeared in the dream. What they are going to do might be related to Helot.
Precisely. This world is never short of tactless creatures who delight in disturbing other people's lives.
I'll get to the bottom of what's happening in Elworth.
I'll find Helot.
Understood. There's no time to waste, I'll set out for Elworth right away.
That isn't what I meant... Hello?
I truly don't understand why everyone must be in such a hurry. You could at least have finished your drink...
He drains the drink in front of him, then holds up the empty glass and gives it a small shake toward the door.
May the Silver Key light your path, Keeper.
Keeper, what's your situation?
We've reached the Elworth ice field. Everything's stable.
Just as you guessed, Lily can faintly sense the ripples of that same power, enough to point us the right way.
Anything strange happen along the way?
No abnormalities, just navigating through seas filled with broken ice, praying daily that the roaring winds don't capsize the ship... Unsure why both the Church of the Lightbearers and the Helot have their eyes on this place.
Though the locals around here aren't happy to see us. They keep shouting half-coherent things about the Mountain God and monsters.
There's something you should know. This trip was approved in such a hurry that we never had time for a proper preliminary investigation.
I've spent the last few days in the archives, and I found a file on Elworth. According to it...
While you're talking with Doll, you see Lily wander up to a hole in the ice.
Lily, be careful. Don't fall in.
Lily walks a few steps further off and crouches down, curious.
There's... a sound...
You step closer. Something is stirring the seawater below, and a dull, muffled sound rises through the translucent ice.
A blurred dark shape appears beneath the ice, swelling larger and larger at terrifying speed...
Look out!
You yank the girl back from the edge of the abyss. The ice splits beneath her feet, and several polar creatures, grotesquely, impossibly huge, burst up through it, hauling their misshapen bodies out onto the surface.
Eerie black Pustules well up from beneath their fur. Something stirs inside them, and the air fills with the stench of rot.
A hoarse, piercing shriek tears through the air. The creatures watch you with eyes eaten away by Pustules, full of raw hostility.
Mutations caused by Dissolution... Lily, watch out!
The Silver Key in your hand gives off a gentle glow. A black sphere plants itself in front of Lily and grinds the creatures to pulp.
You dodge the last of their dying lunges and let out a long breath.
Hostiles cleared... Doll, what were those things?
I only found out myself just now, after pulling the files. Mythag once sent a team of scientists and Investigators to Elworth for a secret survey. They ran into these mutated creatures too, and wrote them up.
Do the Records the expedition sent back say anything about a "Mountain God"? I keep thinking this has something to do with Helot.
Unfortunately, the files on that secret survey are about as empty as certain people's heads.
They came back with nothing at all? I have a few questions for them. Can I speak to them directly?
The other end of the line goes quiet for a moment.
If these Investigators' spiritual energy had been strong enough to leave a Silver behind, you could Awaken them and ask them that yourself.
Sadly, the fragile things left nothing at all... It's as though Elworth simply devoured them.
In a storm this fierce, maybe something went wrong and they were buried here.
Either way, Elworth is far more dangerous than our assessment allowed for.
The expedition that died on that mountain was sealed away in a top-secret file for years. Professor Dexter wasn't the only one kept in the dark, I'm only learning of it now myself.
That was the school's oversight. Whether or not you choose to continue this mission, you'll be properly compensated.
I have to find out what the Lantern cult wants.
I'm too worried about Helot to walk away.
I expected as much... For your safety, the school has already reached out to a specialist, Professor Elvis, a researcher at Mythag University.
He's in Elworth right now, surveying with an outside expedition. The peak they mean to study is the same one Lily pointed to, so they should be a real help in finding Helot.
Its members are seasoned and well supplied. Traveling with them will do far more for your odds of survival. And gaining you and Lily as fighters is good for them, too.
You knew I wouldn't back out?
This isn't the first time.
I won't try to talk you out of it, but Mythag can't afford to lose its Keeper. Look after yourself. Come back alive.
2. Ally or Foe, before the fight
147 linesAre you sure it's here?
Mm. Lily can feel it. Helot... she's here.
Lily hears another voice too.
That mountain... it's calling Lily...
A mountain range unfolds before you, its snow-worn peaks bathed in golden light, standing solemn above the ice fields.
The mountain is calling you... Is that because Helot is up there? Can the two of you sense each other...?
Doll said the expedition should be getting here about now. Let's wait.
Researchers all the way from Mythag, coming halfway across the world to study a place this dangerous.
Maybe it's because people like that exist that the world can still hold on to a sliver of peace in the middle of all this madness.
{Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper, what does that mean... Lily doesn't understand.
Lily tugs at your sleeve again. You crouch down and smile at her.
I mean that soon there'll be a whole group of grown-ups here to play with Lily. But this place is dangerous, and they can't protect themselves.
We can, though.
Lily... can Lily do that?
Of course. Lily's amazing. Lily will protect them, won't she?
Mm-hm!
Aah! Mon, monsters!!...
A commotion breaks out somewhere in the distance, cutting your conversation short.
You and Lily trade a look. You take her hand and run toward the noise...
...
You make short work of the monsters closing in, then look back toward the camp.
Is everyone all right?
There are a dozen or so people in the camp, nearly all of them frail non-combatants. They watch these horrifying creatures in panic, and the resistance they manage to put up is feeble at best.
Thank you so much, {Male=sir,Female=miss}. We wouldn't have made it without you.
By your clothes, you're no professional survey team. What are you doing in a place like this?
Oh, I got word from Doll that she'd be sending a student out. %player%... that's you, isn't it?
His voice is calm and steady, and a school-crest communicator is pinned to his chest. This must be the professor Doll mentioned, the one out here on field research, Elvis.
Running into a student from my own university out in Elworth, what a pleasant surprise... Hello, and well met. I'm a professor of paleontology at Mythag University, and a professional mountaineer besides.
Pleased to meet you, Professor.
Just call me Elvis.
I didn't notice her before, you've got a little kid tucked in with you?
It's nothing but ice and snow out here, and she's dressed that thin. Aren't you afraid she'll freeze?
Lily isn't cold. Lily came to protect everyone.
Haha. Cute kid.
All right. Thanks to %player%, those animals didn't cost us much strength.
Everyone's had a fright. Let's rest at the camp a while.
The young medic holds Lily in her arms, and Elvis, his skin dark from the sun, pulls faces to make her laugh.
The expedition members crowd around her, blocking the wind and snow while filling her tiny hands with chocolate and nuts.
For people who live with death at their shoulder, a child's smile is the only comfort they have left.
Mmf... Lily can't eat it all...
Her cheeks packed with nuts, Lily gnaws at the frozen chocolate with her little teeth, eyes crinkling with delight.
She notices you watching, hops down from the medic's lap, and comes pattering over to you.
That lady smells a lot like Mommy. Lily often smelled that scent during surgeries... it's very familiar.
So you'll play with them after all, Lily?
Lily looks up at you, dead serious.
{Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper matters a lot to Lily, but everyone here is so nice to Lily too, and Lily likes being with them.
You pat Lily on the head and take a look around.
Strange. Everything up here is ice and snow, so why does that pit smell like that?
Elvis leans in for a closer look.
There are dormant volcanoes under Elworth's ice fields. Probably toxic gas from a magma reaction. Nothing serious, I'd say.
You glance around, just you and Elvis. You step closer to him and lower your voice.
Professor, is it really all right for the ordinary members of the expedition to see those Monsters?
Don't worry, they can't see the traces of Dissolution. As for the animals acting strangely, I've already explained that away, a biological virus unique to Elworth, and anything infected ends up like that.
I'm the only scholar on this team who comes anywhere near biology, so they take my word for it. Nobody wants to give those animals a second look. They won't find anything.
You nod. The guide's deep voice carries over from nearby.
Everyone's rested enough. There's still daylight, let's break camp and start climbing.
Soon you break camp and climb on, following the guide. Along the way, the gnawed-out carcasses of horses lie scattered beside the trail, white bones half-buried in the snow.
These colored scraps of cloth...
Climbers who died on the trail, years back. Died in every way you can imagine, frozen stiff, buried alive by an avalanche, fallen off the summit... Too many people have died on this mountain.
The horses carry your gear, and if it comes to it, you slaughter them for meat. Only they can't follow us past a certain height.
The guide juts his chin, motioning you toward a body lying beside the trail.
Ice and snow bury most of it. What skin shows is a dark purple-blue. It is still frozen in the act of crawling out of its sleeping bag, an eerie grin on its face.
"Paradoxical undressing" and the "death grin." Classic signs of freezing to death.
The bodies of climbers who die up here usually end up as landmarks for the ones who follow.
I had friends who never came back from this mountain. May I check this climber's name tag?
Of course.
Elvis crosses the soft snow toward the stiffened body and tries to shift it aside to uncover the name tag on the sleeping bag.
Then, in the instant he is completely unguarded, a purple-blue body caked in ice bursts out of the sleeping bag.
The nameless corpse, smiling that ghastly smile, reaches both hands, slick with pitch-black slime, toward Elvis, who has fallen to the ground.
Aaaaah!!!!!!
M-mon... monster!
Everyone, look out! Lily!
Mm-hm!
Black spheres appear at Lily's side and hurl themselves at the grotesquely twisted corpses. In moments, the black Pustules inside them are cleared away.
Aaaaah, It's the Mountain God! Those who desecrate the divine will suffer divine punishment!
Outsiders without a shred of reverence, treading into the sanctuary where the divine dwells, you are not welcome here! Go! Get out!
This is the Elworth Local the expedition hired. His face has been grim the whole way, but now there's a sickly fervor in it.
The whole party has gone silent. The corpse that lurched up a moment ago, and the Local's mad muttering, have drawn a cloud of dread over the expedition.
Apart from the handful of you out of Mythag, none of them has ever faced anything like this.
That just now... what was it?
...I don't know.
You can't answer.
Under the terms laid down by the Mystia Treaty Committee, you're bound to keep the secret, the existence of the Dissolution Phenomenon must never be revealed to ordinary people.
The Local's face is ashen, his lips writhing as they push out sickening whispers, like maggots clawing their way out of his mouth.
It couldn't really be... a god... could it?
The guide has collected himself. He frowns, but shakes his head firmly.
The professor explained it earlier, those strange animals turned violent after the virus got into them. So people could turn aggressive from an infection too.
Science can account for this. There's no need to let our minds run wild.
The guide's voice is steady and strong, the voice of a man you can trust, but the fist he keeps behind his back is trembling.
He is trying to build a reason solid enough to believe, for the others, and for himself.
The frightened expedition members clearly aren't convinced by such a thin explanation, but their faces settle all the same. They bury the unease, gather their gear, and prepare to move on.
Thousands of meters up a snowbound mountain, cornered by something no one understands, people need a false comfort. They need something to believe in.
And so the expedition, silent now, resumes the climb.
...
You spend two days on the mountain, slowly growing used to the climate. The expedition collects plenty of samples, but there's little joy on anyone's face.
Those strange incidents still gnaw at everyone who doesn't know the truth.
We've collected all the rock samples we came for. If you're set on going higher, the expedition can't go with you.
He pauses, a note of apology in his voice.
I'm responsible for everyone's safety.
You climb for a long time, and still there's no sign of Helot. Above you, the summit is lost in howling wind and snow.
Give up and go back down with the expedition, or press on to the summit, you have to decide...
{Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper, there's a familiar smell here. Lily can feel it...
Roar...
Up ahead... is that a monster?!
Helot is just up ahead... she could be in danger!
Following Lily's lead, you round a bend in the winding trail and see a figure slowly coming toward you.
That's... Helot?!!
You break into a run.
The girl is dressed far too thinly for this cold. At the sound of your shouts she halts in the snow and looks your way, wary.
No question, that is Helot's face. And yet you can't quite be sure, everything about her feels different from the last time you saw her.
The noise has put her on edge. That wary look belongs to a cornered animal, one ready to strike to kill at any moment.
The beast goes taut, breath held, staring. Then she grins, and the brief blankness in her eyes hardens into pure hostility and murder.
?!!
Helot steps forward and strikes. A massive flail takes shape in her hand and comes screaming toward you.
A dull thud. The black flail catches the guide a glancing blow and hurls him aside; his blood, still steaming, melts snow that has never once thawed and stains the toe of a stiffened climbing boot a brilliant red.
Ngh... everyone... get back!
In full view of everyone, Helot charges into the crowd like a maddened beast.
%player%! Do something! This madwoman really means to kill every last one of us!
She's completely lost her mind... we'll have to force her to stop!
You pull the Silver Key from your chest and pour your Spiritual Energy into it. A soft silver glow ripples out around you.
The silver glow slips gently into Helot's mind. Inside, her Spirit Realm is a howling storm, fighting your Link with everything it has.
The roar closes in...
Helot... stop!
Helot lets out a throat-tearing roar and hurls her flail wildly, smashing everything on the mountain to pieces.
All that noise! This lunatic, she's not just hurting people, she's going to bring down an avalanche on us!
She doesn't seem to remember anything. What happened to her?!
%player%! Do something! Get this lunatic under control!
Helot! Remember! It's me...
Ding...
At last the soft silver glow forces its way through the churning tide of her mind and reaches Helot's eyes, and the madness there drains away.
Helot drifts down a river of silver light, letting the current cradle her mind.
She fights to break loose, but the water only folds around her more gently, and she sinks deeper, and deeper...
I've barely managed to hold your madness in check. Your mind is still trying to tear itself free of the Link... You don't want to be here, do you?
The madness has gone out of Helot's eyes, but her stare still burns, it clamps onto yours the way a starving animal fixes on a slab of meat.
I-don't-belong-here...
She spits out each word one at a time, turning a simple admission into a threat.
Then do you remember where you do belong?
Helot says nothing.
I don't know what happened to you. Maybe we can work together until you're yourself again?
Elworth is far too strange, far too unpredictable. Now that you've found Helot, getting out of here fast is your top priority, and for that, you need her under control.
Helot stays silent, and her mind keeps straining against your Link. Your face hardens.
Your mind is dangerously unstable. Without a Link to hold you, you'll almost certainly mutate again, into a monster with no human shape and no reason left.
You don't want that either, do you?
Fire kindles in Helot's eyes. She grins at you, lips pulled back from sharp teeth. It is the look a beast gives its prey.
Threats, bribes... what a bastard you are. Once I've steadied myself, I'll tear you apart, swallow you down, and lick the plate clean...
You meet her eyes without flinching.
I'll be waiting. But right now, you do as I say.
3. Endless Frost, before the fight
101 linesThat's the gist of it. I've talked it over with the guide and Professor Elvis, we know far too little about Elworth, and pushing on would be extremely dangerous.
Helot is coming down the mountain with us. She needs treatment, and once she's calmed down, we have questions for her about Elworth.
...
The silence is awful. Every look, resentful, frightened, scornful, settles on you and Helot, and you feel them like thorns in your back.
The guide she wounded is an easygoing man. He slaps a bandage on himself, says nothing about it, calms the expedition with a few words, and starts organizing the descent.
The expedition collected on the way up, samples, fossils, a decent haul, but there isn't a trace of pleasure on anyone's face.
You remember what Doll said.
After that transmission, the entire expedition dropped out of contact.
If those Investigators' Spiritual Energy had been strong enough to leave a Silver behind, maybe you could Awaken them now and let them answer that themselves.
Sadly, those fragile things left nothing at all... It was as if Elworth had swallowed them whole.
Even buried under snow, with the gear they were carrying, there should have been some trace of them...
Oof... Helot, why'd you stop? Did you see something?
She looks back, eyes fixed on the way they came.
Prey.
She says nothing more, only keeps glancing back at some point out in the endless white, her eyes bright with excitement and hunger.
You follow her gaze and catch a glimpse of a fleeting dark figure. When you look again, there is nothing behind you but endless wind and snow.
...
The way down is harder going than the climb up, and the monsters come thicker with every step.
Once the area is cleared of monsters, you make camp somewhere sheltered and easy to defend, and agree on a watch rotation for the night.
A full day of exertion has drained you dry. You can't fight off the heavy drowsiness, and you sink into a deep sleep...
...
Faint, muffled arguing drags you out of your dreams. You push aside the tent flap and find every face outside grim, frighteningly grim.
Wasn't it settled that you'd take over the watch at midnight? And now look, a man's gone! So whose fault is that?!
Last night was my shift, yes, but... but the geology assistant on watch before me told me to sleep a while longer, said he'd wake me when it was time.
And then he never came. Not all night...
How long has he been missing?
The moment they see you, they grab hold of you like a lifeline.
He never woke his relief at midnight, and now he's vanished into thin air. I don't like this...
Could he have panicked and slipped off in the night, left us behind?
In a place like Elworth, going off alone is just suicide. Nobody gambles with their own life...
Maybe he just went for a walk nearby... It's still early. Let's go find him while we can still follow his tracks.
I've been doing this a long time. If you want to survive up here, you never write off a companion.
You all feign composure, follow the guide's lead, and search the trail carefully.
Clinging to a hope you know is unrealistic, you would rather believe the geology assistant is still alive.
Wh-what is that?
The whole expedition looks ahead at once. There in the snow, down the slope, spreads a wide pool of bright red, congealed blood.
The body is still wrapped in cloth, broken apart like a heap of pulp.
Scraps of cloth flutter in the wind and snow. On the cracked nameplate, you can just make out the words "Geology Assistant."
A dreadful silence settles over everyone again. The grim-faced expedition members feel like strangers to Lily, and she takes your hand without thinking.
I told you! I warned every one of you! The resting place of the Mountain God suffers no filthy outsiders. The holy mountain has been defiled, and only your blood can wash it clean...
He curses you in a frenzy, crawling and knocking his forehead against the ground in some grotesque posture, begging to have his own sins forgiven.
The state of the body has shaken every member of the expedition. The guide tries to calm everyone down, but the screaming and the fear keep spreading through the group.
While everyone's eyes stay fixed on the ruined corpse, you notice something odd: the snow-covered ground still bears bloodstains and black marks from a violent fight.
Strange... there are signs of a struggle around the body. Looks like it went back and forth for a while.
Miss, could I trouble you to give the deceased a quick examination?
She glances around at the others, every one of them on the edge of panic, then nods and steps forward.
All I can manage under these conditions is a basic external exam, the clothing is torn, there's obvious trauma, and there are comminuted fractures throughout the body. Consistent with a heavy blow from an outside force.
Comminuted fractures... could he have fallen to his death?
The drop between our camp and this spot isn't even three meters, nowhere near enough to shatter every bone in his body. We can rule out a fall.
I don't have much to work with here, and the body is too badly destroyed to tell where the force landed. But one thing I'm certain of...
The young medic presses her lips together, her back trembling faintly. You can tell she's forcing herself to stay calm.
No human being could have beaten him into this.
The words set off an uproar. All eyes turn to Helot, nobody has forgotten the massive flail she threw without a second thought, and the sight of her cutting a man down is still fresh in every mind.
Anatomically, I agree with her. The bones are shattered clean through; he died from a violent impact. Her analysis is sound.
Could a nonhuman creature have done this?
The "killer" didn't strike at the camp. It lured him somewhere farther out, so no one back at camp would be alerted.
That kind of care takes a creature with something close to human intelligence. And of every mutated creature we've encountered so far, not one is capable of it.
So...
He spreads his hands, helpless.
By the professor's reasoning, Helot really does seem to be the only one who fits the profile of the killer.
...
From the look on your face, I'd say you have your doubts?
Mm... Helot keeps looking back, over and over. Like something's been following us this whole time.
Last night I sensed nothing strange from the other end of the Link. I don't think Helot is the killer.
I trust your judgment. Convincing the others, though, that won't be so easy...
He looks around at the faces of the expedition members and lowers his voice.
It's getting dark, and it's far too cold out here to keep moving... We make camp and rest.
As for Helot...
Tonight... I'll watch her.
...
Outside the tents nothing is left but the campfire, and now and then a hushed exchange or the clatter of tools.
Some of the soft-handed researchers lash together whatever the mountain offers into crude stone axes and knives, then tuck them under their pillows for what little comfort that brings.
Others have abandoned reason entirely, absorbed in copying the posture the Local once used to please the Mountain God, flat on their bellies, crawling in slow, contorted movements...
Hostile eyes keep turning toward your tent.
The tent flap lifts and two figures step inside.
When people are cornered, they need an enemy to blame, an answer, far more than they need to keep groping in the dark. If it weren't Helot, it would be someone else.
Helot's face stays cold and she says nothing, but the madness you forced down is still raging behind her eyes.
The guide walks over and claps you on the shoulder.
I checked her flail. It doesn't match the wounds on the body. Helot isn't the killer, I'm sure of it.
Thank you very much. Even though you were hurt by Helot, you still speak kindly of her.
All my years out here have taught me one thing: in a place like this, nothing matters more than trust.
You should get a look at those scientists. They pray to the gods more devoutly than any believer. They don't trust science, they don't trust each other, and they don't trust themselves.
Fear of the unknown has ground their will to powder. When despair sets in, what's left of the dignity of science...
He lets out a few dry laughs, shoulders shaking hard, from laughter, from the cold, or from fear.
"Sinner." "Murderer." "Demon."... In the few seconds the tent stands open, the words bore into your ears, and there's no shutting them out.
They're not wrong. There's a dangerous, bloodthirsty monster standing right in front of you. Hesitation is no quality for a warrior.
I know it wasn't you.
Helot pauses, then suddenly leans in close, meeting your eyes.
Try to leash a beast, and don't be surprised when it eats you.
I'm not trying to control you. I just...
She hums softly, turns away, and watches the wind and snow outside the tent.
I have my own business to finish. You helped me, so I'll help you once before I go.
This mountain is a beast too, and it's hunting us... but soon, I'll devour it!
You stop listening to her ravings.
You sit up with Helot the whole night and hear nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe the expedition member's grisly death yesterday really was just an accident...
Aaaaaaah, the Monster! It's the Monster! It's shown Itself again!
Where are they? Where did they go?!
Outside the tent, where the watch should be standing, there are only a few pools of blood, already starting to congeal.
Your blood runs cold. One "accident" after another, every dawn thick with the smell of blood, expedition members vanishing and dying one by one...
Something makes you turn, hard and fast.
A cloaked dark figure disappears into the wind and snow...
4. Dark Figure, before the fight
51 linesOver there! I saw something...
It's this woman... this woman did it! Kill her... kill her!!
Helot was with me all night, every minute of it. I swear...
You're in it together! Mythag liars!
I...
Get a grip! Without %player%, this mountain would have killed us ten times over by now!
The guide grabs the expedition member by the shoulders and shakes hard. Under that heavy voice and that stare, the member finally settles down a little.
Thank you very much...
Save the courtesies. Now, what did you see?
The dark figure, I saw her! Just now, right when we found what had happened.
She could well be the killer!
In a storm like this, she can't have gotten far! It's easy to get lost out here, we're coming with you.
Mind your wound. Let's move...
The storm's too heavy, the tracks are buried already. Looks like we head back to camp for now.
Agreed. We'll pick up the dark figure's trail later.
But there's something strange... a lot of the monsters broke off halfway through the fight and ran, like something had frightened them off...
Aaaaah! Not again! Haven't enough of us died already? The Monster...
I don't want to die here, it was her, she's the one who angered the Mountain God! She's the one who deserves to die!
Kill her... kill this... mon... @2...
The faces of several expedition members twist out of shape, and their voices slur into nonsense.
Thick black slurry spreads across the snow's pale surface, gurgling, eerie fluid pouring out of the expedition members' bodies.
A black spike lashes out and drives straight at Helot.
Move, ngh...
You twist and shove her aside, and the spike punches clean through your shoulder.
You let out a muffled groan, your arm going limp as you slump against Helot's shoulder. Blood and meltwater splash into her eyes, breaking apart your dim reflection.
Piercing pain spreads from the wound, your mind reeling, and the Link stalls for a moment.
You watch her uneasily. If she wanted, she could turn on you right now, and your Spiritual Energy would collapse without question. But... she doesn't.
Helot...?
I don't strike at anyone who's already down. When the time comes, I'll walk out in the open. Until then...
She turns toward the expedition members howling to tear her apart. Those eyes, calmed a moment ago by the silver light, flood with blood-red again.
You're all asking to die!
Helot! ...
Too late. The howl of the flail drowns out your shout as it slams into the crazed expedition members.
You stare blankly at the pool of thick black remains in front of you. The people who stood with you only moments ago lie here now, left forever on this glacier of endless snow.
Blegh
Countless explorers have died in these mountains, but the guide has never seen so many die so horribly.
He can't hold himself together any longer. His shoulders heave and he retches until the sound echoes off the ice.
They've been hit by Dissolution too... And here, it spreads this fast...
The monsters that ran, the way our people reacted, none of it is normal...
We're all that's left. We have to get down the mountain, now, or else...
BOOM...
He never finishes. The light above him simply goes dark.
You look up. Like a stormcloud swallowing the sun, an enormous dark shape rises along the side of the cliff and hangs over you.
A vast sigil is carved into the colossal Monster's body, you have seen it before, in a dream.
That's... the Church of the Lightbearers!!!
BOOM!
AHHHH,
{Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper!!!
The immense being hanging above you slams down. The roar splits the peak, and the rock beneath your feet shatters to dust.
Your footing gives way, and you plunge into the gorge with Helot.
And through your horrified shouts, Helot grins wide and, for the first time, laughs out loud.
5. Reunion, before the fight
124 linesAll this time... something this immense was hiding up here...
Wh... what... is that thing...
Facing a colossal Monster like nothing he has ever seen, he spends every last bit of strength just to stay on his feet.
"BOOM..."
A thunderous crash, Lily blocks the Monster's attack. Her balance breaks and she staggers back a few steps, but her eyes stay fixed on the Monster across from her.
Offspring of @3 ... @2 is here ... @3 ...
The Monster hovering in the air shudders and lets out a shrill howl.
Lily is gathering another dark sphere when a figure steps in front of her.
Lily... run! ...It isn't safe here...
The guide's voice shakes. Facing a terror beyond anything in his life, this ordinary man gathers up all the courage he has and stands in front of Lily.
He tries to shield her from the bone-deep cold of death. He tries to stand against a Fate no one can resist.
{Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper said Lily is really strong. So Lily will protect you.
Lily! Agh...
The cold rushes up him and his tongue goes numb. He is frozen through, as if dropped into liquid nitrogen, not one cell in his brain can move.
A cold so absolute it freezes thought itself and grinds it to powder.
The guide and Elvis harden into ice statues, and the gale knocks them flat into the snow. That absolute cold climbs Lily's fingertips.
What did you do?
You @3... cannot @2...
Lily's face hardens. Her eyes leave the guide and rise to the huge Monster floating overhead.
The glowing blue Monster snarls its venomous babble. The snow it throws up whips across Lily's cheeks, and her face doesn't change at all.
Lily does what {Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper said. Lily protects everyone.
A smooth, enormous black sphere takes shape at her fingertips. Lily raises one finger and points it at the glowing blue Monster hanging in the air.
You are not allowed to hurt them!
Lily... Professor Elvis?...
No one answers. You open your eyes to a blur, feeling the wet seep in behind you, your snow-soaked coat being torn and crushed.
Mm... what is this?!
You've fallen onto a frozen lake, and the impact has punched a deep crater into the ice. Spilling endlessly out of the cracks are smooth spheres that look like black Pustules.
You flinch back and scramble away from the crater.
With nothing left to plug the hole, the black Pustules churning beneath the ice pour out all at once and race toward the lake's edge.
Wait, this isn't Dissolution, is it?
Aaaah, urgh...
Black Pustules cling all over Helot. As though something in her resonates with them, she shakes harder and harder the more wildly they surge.
She swings her massive flail like a madwoman, smashing the black sludge that spills from the cracks, then comes for you.
!!! Helot! Calm down!
Black vapor bleeds from Helot's pupils, and the Silver Key at your chest flares brighter than ever.
You can feel the Link being battered without mercy. Just holding it together takes everything you have.
A grotesque smile spreads across her face, slick with black slime. The huge flail is a toy in her hands as she swings it and closes in on you, step by step.
I feel it... the mountain is calling...
What are you doing?!
There is no need for the Link to exist any longer!
The flail comes screaming down, an instant from splitting your skull...
Clang...
A tremendous crash bursts open above your head. You slowly lower the arm you threw up over your eyes.
If you're done throwing your fit, then stop.
The flail is knocked away and drops limply to one side.
In the biting wind, that familiar dark figure who will not stay gone stands between you and the blow, blade in hand.
Boom...
The other "Helot" swings her massive flail, shattering a cluster of black Pustules, and the leftover force rips through the ice sheathing the rock. The mountain groans as it breaks.
Spike and flail slam together. The two of them stand locked eye to eye, sparks flying, each pouring unspent fury into the other.
The dark figure plants herself in front of you and takes the full sweep of the other "Helot's" frenzied flail, sliding back several steps.
The wind tears at the cloak, already shredded by the iron spikes, and lifts it aside to reveal a familiar profile.
Helot?!!!
So you've finally come... I've been waiting a long time for this!
You're too slow.
She hurls the slime spike condensed in her hand, and it punches clean through the sticky Pustules on the other "Helot." Black dots spatter across the snow.
Helot, you... you're the dark figure that's been following us all this time?!
It was me. I felt the call, and I came, same as her.
Why didn't you show yourself?
A power of the same origin as mine drew me here. I wanted to see what she was after.
Then I saw the Monster.
You helped me once. I clean up your trouble, and we're even.
A Monster?
The one that hunted the expedition members and sent you over the cliff.
So everyone who went missing...
Yes. It was stalking you from behind, waiting for its moment.
I stepped in and protected a few of them. They lived, but the Monster still dragged them into its lair.
If you're Helot, then who is she...?
Helot's eyes go ice-cold, her hostile stare sliding past your shoulder to the other "Helot" standing behind you.
A slime spike shoots out along that cold stare, only for the other "Helot" to knock it into the snow with her massive flail, where it melts into a pool of pitch-black slime.
Wait... whatever this is about, let's just talk it out...
You step between their glares, trying to defuse things.
It doesn't seem to help.
You sensed me long ago. You've been preparing to kill me this whole way up.
A fragment from another dimension loses control easily. If you want to survive in this world, there are other ways.
"Survive"? Living is the least of what I want.
The other "Helot" licks the black slurry from the corner of her mouth. The flail whirls madly in her grip, its howl closing in.
This world can only hold one Helot. The weak "me" is the phantom that shouldn't exist.
Dimensions, fragments, a weak "me"... could this be Genesis?!
You thought back to your encounter with Genesis Ramona.
That's right. That fragment of her was shed from the "me" of another world. In essence, we're the same person.
But I don't understand why she's here, in this world at all...
The other "Helot" throws back her head and laughs, pouring every ounce of her malice into the sound.
Hahaha... Since when were you and I the same person?
Herbert was right. You're exactly what I used to be, weak, lost, easy to break.
Herbert... him again.
I don't know what Herbert and Lantern promised you, but he's a traitor. Nothing a traitor says is worth trusting.
You don't understand a thing, Helot. I don't trust anyone. I came here for my own reasons, and no one else's.
Only absolute power will let me finish my revenge.
The massive flail whirls in her grip, hauled around by sheer force, as she closes in on Helot step by step.
Devouring you is what will make "Helot" strong...
The shrieking iron ball swallows the rest of her words and comes straight at you.
Helot ducks under the chain's crushing blow and hurls the slime spike in her hand at the other "Helot's" vitals, barely catching her balance at the lip of the ice pit where the Pustules are welling up.
The Pustules... the Pustules are spilling out again!
Both of them stop at once and look toward the great hole in the middle of the frozen lake, where a black, viscous mass is slowly seeping up.
The crack keeps widening, and more Pustules are pouring out of it. If we stay any longer, we may never get out at all...
We have to leave now, and take Lily and the others with us.
Helot sweeps her eyes across the area.
Where's Lily? Wasn't she with you the whole time?
When the Monster knocked us off the cliff, Lily and a few of the survivors were still up there. We have to find them, make sure they're safe, and get them out fast.
Something endless and dark lies hidden beneath the fissures in the lake. Pitch-black Pustules pour out of the widening cracks in the ice and close in around you.
Lily and Elvis are still in danger, and we can't get free of this place...
Both Helots flinch at the same instant, hearing the cries that rise from deep inside their souls.
That voice... again.
The other "Helot" swings her flail down and smashes a deep crater into the ice. Pustules swarm up out of the pit and cling to the flail.
They writhe as they gather in from every direction, and then she stops.
A manic grin spreads across her face.
Yes... this is it... this is it!
It's @3! It sees us, Helot... It's calling us!
Come with us, we need to get out of here first!
Run? No. I didn't come here to run.
Don't be a fool! The Pustules will just keep pouring out, on and on. Keep this up and they'll devour you!
And what if I'm the one who devours it?
What?
These Pustules belong to the mountain. You feel it too, don't you, Helot? It has been calling us back all this time. This is our Fate.
Come, Helot. Join me. Merge with the mountain. Join me, and face the Fate we share...
It wants to devour us, to drain our power dry. So turn it around, we can devour it instead!
Helot stands beside you, her face cold.
Even an entity like me can't withstand the madness that much power brings, much less you, a fragment from another dimension.
Heh... If you're afraid, then run along, coward. Don't you still have someone to find?
Don't worry. Once I've devoured them, I'll come looking for you. And then I'll swallow you down too.
Come on, all of you! More, give me more...
...Let's go.
Helot?
No idea what that madwoman wants. We've got more important things to do than stand around humoring her. I'll help you find Lily.
6. Sacrifice, before the fight
107 linesYou climb the glacial rock face, where there is barely a foothold to be found, and follow Helot's faint sense of Lily into this crack in the rock.
A crevice inside a glacier should be packed with ice, yet it isn't cold here at all. Unsettling moss even clings to the inner walls.
Is it really all right, leaving her back there?
It was her own choice.
Her staying behind buys us time, at least. We need to hurry, Ah!
You trip on a jut of white bone in the floor, and Helot catches your arm and hauls you back.
What tripped you is an intact human leg bone embedded in the wall, like scraps left behind after the rock swallowed the rest.
Th-this is?!
Some less fortunate climbers.
Why are these bodies inside the walls? Do the walls... eat people?
We have enough to worry about already. Keep moving.
...
...The smell here is strange. It's like the stench from before, only much stronger. Maybe it has something to do with volcanic activity.
We might be getting close to the crater.
This smell... I know it from somewhere...
The walls are steaming. There's something wrong with this cave.
Really? Let me touch it.
Hm? Helot, what did you just take off me?
Something filthy that landed on you.
!!!
She flicks the small black Pustule against the wall and runs it through with her sword.
Let's go.
...
The deeper we go, the worse the stench... Oh, sorry, didn't mean to crowd you.
Come any closer and you deal with the consequences, human.
It's really not my fault, the passage keeps getting narrower... and I think this wall is moving...
Try a better excuse next time.
Ugh... aaaaah... please, let us go...
A faint voice drifts up from deep inside the cave.
Someone's in there! We've finally found them!
You're about to push deeper in when a hand catches your arm. Helot shakes her head at you, her face grim.
You're right... the walls are narrowing. Any deeper and we won't get back out.
As if answering her, the walls begin to writhe, slow and heavy.
A rotting hand works its way out of the wall, then a thigh, then a skull...
Countless pieces of bodies spill from the walls, some picked clean to the bone, others still hung with rotting flesh.
Mismatched limbs from a dozen different climbers open before you like a cruel flower of decay.
What is this?!
So this... this is where the stench comes from...
If we both go in, neither of us may come out. Helot, wait for me out here!
Hey!
You pull your hand free before she can finish and plunge into the reeking dark of the passage.
...
Lily! Professor Elvis! Guide! Where are you?
To the great @3... an offering...
You follow the sound to the far end of the cave, where a ring of jagged rock and spikes guards a pitch-black altar.
Several dark red bodies kneel hunched on the altar, and not one of them is breathing.
Too late again...
You lean your head out of the shadowed passage and look up at whatever it is the crowd is worshipping.
There is an unnatural rupture on the dome. Within the hollow rock floats that glowing blue monster, marked with the Church of the Lightbearers insignia you once encountered.
It is a vast, horrifying thing, and this is the first time you get a proper look at it.
Bare bones, almost arthropod-like, sheathed in frost. At the center of its limbs pulses a strange blue flame, breathing out a cold that steals your breath.
Rrroaaar...
Those Pustules again. This is bad...
Don't you dare hurt {Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper!
A black sphere appears in front of you and crushes the Pustules mid-lunge into puddles of filthy fluid.
Lily?! Are you all right?
Lily is fine. That bad thing is the killer.
Lily squeezes out through a narrow gap, a long climbing rope trailing from her small hands. Two adults are tied to the far end, bundled up tight and unable to move.
The bad thing froze them all stiff, but they aren't dead yet. Lily remembers what {Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper said, Lily has to protect them.
But Lily doesn't remember the way. Lily took a wrong turn, and ended up here...
Lily, do you know what this place is?
Lily tips her head back, staring up with perfect innocence at the Monster coiled overhead.
This is... um, where the Monster sleeps.
The dead on the altar are caked with blood. Look closer, and every face is one you know, the expedition members who went missing.
You slip out of the passage with Lily and weave through the heaps of broken stone. The Monster still hasn't stirred by the time you reach the altar.
This thing is planning a living sacrifice.
A... what?
Through human sacrifice, awaken a being controlled by the Church of the Lightbearers. They aim to bring back a creature that should not exist in the world.
That thing... what is it?
I don't know. Class only ever mentioned this kind of sacrificial ritual in passing...
Whatever the Monster serves, it's picky about its sacrifices. That's why there are only a few people here.
Those expedition members who were killed earlier, the wounds all over them, every bone in their bodies shattered, they were just... unwanted sacrifices. Disposable.
For creatures they can crush without effort, they won't spare even a scrap of pity.
You clench your jaw and try not to let the anger and the grief take hold. Lily feels it and presses closer, offering what comfort she can.
After a moment of silence, you pat Lily's head. A warm sensation spreads through your skin, such a vibrant life.
Lily, right now, what matters is getting the living ones home.
Drag them away, yes, just like that... Wait, look out!
Lily hauls the corpse too hard, and the body, stiff as an ice statue, cracks against the rubble. Behind you, a glowing blue flame flares to life.
No, It's seen us!
The wind cuts across your cheeks like a blade. The Monster breathes out a cloud of icy mist, then fixes on you there in the shadows, unfolding its bones as it closes in.
...Go away!
Roar...
Lily swings the massive flail and drives the huge Monster into the wall. It howls in fury.
You haul up the two barely breathing expedition members and run for the passage.
Hurry! This way!
You are running for your lives. Every step is heavier than the last, but the Monster will be moving again soon, and you cannot stop.
@3...
The mountain lets out a deep, muffled groan, like foul air forced from a throat, then shudders and contracts, hard enough to knock you all off your feet.
What... what's happening?!
There is no time to think. Instinct drives you on, clawing forward on hands and knees through the slime the cave is secreting, toward the mouth that is slowly closing.
Almost there, just ahead...
BOOM,
The whole mountain heaves over. The passage lurches to a new angle and plunges steeply downward.
The slime beneath you gives no grip. You claw your way toward the lit opening, but the passage writhes harder with every second.
The warm stone keeps contracting, crushing your chest, and the air thins with every breath. Even Lily is pinned in a crevice, unable to move.
Black stone swallows the only way out. The path, close enough to touch, is gone, and hopeless darkness closes over your eyes.
Not... not here...
BOOM!
Dust and flecks of snow scatter in the air in front of you.
A gash is hacked clean through the black passage, and blinding white light spills across your shoulders.
Hold on tight. I'm getting you out.
She smashes the cave rock apart and drags you out of the rubble.
Helot!!...
Before she can finish, she steps into empty air.
Where memory says a slope should be, there is nothing at all. In an instant, it has become a bottomless drop.
7. Call of the Summits, before the fight
99 linesHelot... hold on to me!
The instant she falls, you throw out a hand and catch her.
Your ice axe bites into the mountainside. You hang halfway down the cliff face, blood seeping from the gash in your arm, pain rolling through it in waves.
From her other hand dangle the two expedition members, still bound tight.
She tries to pull herself up, but the axe and your failing arm can't take any more weight.
%player%!
Lily shouts down at you, frantic, trying to pull together a black orb to lift you.
But the fight drained her. The orb barely holds its shape, let alone the weight of a person.
Let go! You can't hold on much longer.
Helot's eyes go wide. She fights to shake off your hand, only to feel in those fingers a stubbornness she has never touched before.
I... won't...
Your crampons claw at the ice and keep slipping under the drag of the weight below; only Lily's pull keeps you where you are.
Your face burns red as you fight down the pain, straining to hold tighter, harder, and still you can only watch her fingers slide inch by inch out of your palm.
Her face is four feet from yours. Right now, four feet might as well be a mile.
Let go... keep this up and you'll die too!
The wound on your shoulder tears open. Blood spatters across the skin beneath Helot's eyes and runs down her hard, cold profile.
Her eyes fly open. For a moment she only stares, not even noticing the blood seeping into them.
I'm not leaving a single one of my companions behind... never!
BOOM!
The whole mountain starts shaking again, hard enough to feel like it's coming apart.
You hold on through the weakness and the pain, but your ice axe is torn free of the mountain.
...Thank you.
At least you gave it everything... You close your eyes.
Thud, thud, thud...
The bone-shattering impact never comes. You slam into one rock after another, and the fall becomes a tumble down the slope, then a long slide.
A few seconds later, you come to a stop. The cliff that was about to kill you is now level ground.
A few hundred meters off, Lily stands right where you drove in your ice axe, waving at you.
The grand speeches, the last goodbyes, all of it turns out to be an absurd farce.
You said thank you just now, didn't you?
You misheard.
You follow her gaze and catch a glimpse of a fleeting dark figure. When you look again, there is nothing behind you but endless wind and snow.
Flat ground becomes a cliff, and the cliff becomes flat ground again.
The stench inside the caverns, those cave walls that keep shifting...
Maybe we guessed right.
This mountain... is alive.
We'd better prepare for the worst. We have to watch the mountain every second.
The way down is sealed off, so we climb toward the summit and look for another route... We need to get off this mountain fast.
...
Careful, there's another crevasse here... That was close. I nearly went in again.
{Male=Mr.,Female=Miss} Keeper, do you need to rest?
Holding on to all those people at the broken cliff face has drained you dry. Your arms are strained so badly you can't lift them. You're at your limit.
Better to keep moving... no telling when this mountain shifts again.
I can manage a while longer. Don't worry about me...
Ah!
Lily, what's wrong?
Huh... Lily saw something. Something strange...
Her small hands clutch her head, and she tugs at the hem of your coat, bewildered.
What did you see, Lily?
Snowfields, dead people, the stars, and... us.
I saw them too. Those phantoms that won't let go, tangled around me... and around Lily.
I can feel it. Something is waking up.
The glacier roars again and begins to shift, agonizingly slow.
This time the frozen lake, hidden for so long, lies bare, and you can make out the thin figure standing on the ice, covered in black Pustules.
The crack in the ice widens and widens, a long open wound running across the lake beneath the sprawling glacier.
Black Pustules pour out without end, spreading over the other "Helot."
I can feel it... More. Give me more!
The grotesque Pustules sense her call and hum with excitement, crowding over one another to spill into her mouth, offering themselves up to be devoured.
They seem to delight in being shredded, to worship being swallowed, to hunger for being torn apart and eaten.
You come to a stop before the other "Helot." Her body is steeped in the black Pustules, her shape grown so thin that it looks like mist, ready to scatter at a breath.
Leave now, while there's still a chance...
Leave... We never had the right to leave.
The obsession and madness drain out of the other "Helot"'s eyes.
She looks at Helot with a composure, a calm, she has never shown before.
The things that hurt you, the hatred cut into your bones, have you forgotten all of it, "Helot"?
I never forgot... I just...
You're lost, "Helot".
Only power great enough can finish our revenge. Revenge is the only meaning we have.
Revenge... on whom?
Fate.
That one quiet word, and Helot shudders.
No matter where we go, this mountain will call to us. It will devour us.
That is our destiny, just like every filthy thing we've already lived through...
You've known the answer all along. You just look right past it. Haven't you?
Next to the people and things you hate, Fate is such a terrifying enemy...
You don't deserve to be called a "warrior," you coward.
Your body can't hold together much longer... you'll die here.
And even if I do... what of it?
She turns her face toward you, lips splitting into a grin that bares a pair of sly fangs.
Lantern tricked me into coming here, they meant to use me to bring @3 back. And this mountain has been calling me, wanting to devour me. I knew all of it. I came anyway.
The mountain wanted to see me, so I came to see It.
I owe Lantern my thanks for that, a chance to stand face to face with It...
Coward as you are, you came too, didn't you?
I am your future, "Helot." The day you find the courage to raise your sword against Fate, you will become me.
The black Pustules pile up thicker and thicker, a swarm of starving primeval things flinging themselves at her body, crawling up her cheeks.
She laughs, a beast tearing into raw meat, a king about to take the throne.
Watch me, "Helot"... I will devour It. I will become strong, and no Fate will ever stand in my way again!
No more chains... no more... betrayal...
The black Pustules keep spreading and heaping over her, burrowing into a body that can no longer bear them, closing over that calm, mad face...
I will... have my revenge!!!
Bang...
Like a Pustule bursting, black and red fluid sprays in every direction.
The beast's final shriek still echoes through the empty valley. Where she stood, nothing remains but a puddle.
"Revenge"... huh...
Helot lifts her head, dazed, and looks up at the pale gray sky.
Coarse flakes of snow roll across her skin and melt into little beads of water.
She... the mountain devoured her?
@2...@3...
Helot doesn't get the chance to answer. Something else does...
The mountain shudders beneath your feet. From deep within the range comes a low, filthy call...
8. Thornpeak, before the fight
30 linesLily... Lily hurts so much...
Lily curls up, clutching her head in pain.
Lily?!
You push the pain in your head aside and go to Lily to check on her.
Ngh...
A heavy thud, and Helot collapses to the ground, her previously composed face now filled with pain.
Helot? What's happening to you...
You lean down to check on Helot, and her hand clamps around your arm.
Spikes erupt from the slime in her palm and tear into your forearm, leaving it slick with blood.
An eerie light flickers in her eyes, and a strange smile has crept across that cold, proud face.
Your Linker can't hold it back anymore... There's only one thing left to do!
You activate the Silver Key, sending ripples of silver light towards the frantic Helot.
You close your eyes and overdraw your Spiritual Energy again, emptying yourself into the Link until you seize control of her by force.
She goes still. Her scattered eyes focus again, and when they find your bloodied forearm, she opens her mouth, then presses her lips shut.
You're back with us at last.
The backlash rises from deep in your mind like a tide. Exhaustion crashes over you, and your face drains to the same dead white as this ancient plain of ice.
How are you holding up... What happened?
The call was too strong... We couldn't bear it...
The other "Helot" was devoured. This mountain... It's about to wake up.
Before she finishes, an enormous dark shape sweeps over your heads.
The gale rakes across you, and a sick cold climbs from your feet all the way to your heart.
It's the Monster...
Beneath the hideous bulk of the colossal Monster, you are all no bigger than snowflakes about to melt.
But its eyes don't linger on you for long. Strangely, it turns away and flies toward the snow-covered summit, dragging a tail of glowing blue flame behind it.
Fire erupts from the summit, its light blazing straight up into the sky.
It... what is it doing?
A few sharp cracks split the air as the ice imprisoning Elvis and the guide breaks apart. Slowly, the two of them come around from the deep cold.
It can't even hold these two frozen anymore. The Monster must have pulled most of its power up to the summit. What is it planning?
It's been making living sacrifices all this time to wake the sleeping mountain, and the mountain has been calling Lily and me back here. Which means...
It wants to sacrifice you to the mountain?! We have to get out of here, now!
9. Thornpeak, after the fight
94 linesThe twisted Monster slams down onto the ice, gouging out a trench deep as a ravine. It drones, hauling itself up again and again only to crash back down.
It is barely alive, yet the flames behind it keep burning, swelling larger, until they nearly devour it.
Helot drives the spike into the fire again and again, but nothing she does will put out that blaze.
What... what's going on?!
The ritual has already begun. Its awakening can't be undone.
Is there really nothing else we can do?
...There's one more.
Helot looks at you, then up at the blue flame burning on the summit.
If it wakes, everyone here dies.
It's calling out to the power that shares its origin. If it swallows us, our spirits will merge into it...
Helot closes her eyes. The fragments that scattered gather again in her mind.
And what if I'm the one who devours it?
It wants to devour me, to drain my strength. So turn it around, I can devour it instead!
Helot opens her eyes again.
The only way is to do what the other "Helot" did, try to devour the power of the mountain...
Helot crouches down and, copying you, awkwardly pats the soft top of Lily's head.
Lily is already half swallowed by the mountainside. Pitch-black tears run down her face, and she stares at Helot with empty eyes, no longer in control of herself.
She's already suffered too much. Let me do it.
No... no, it can't end like this... There has to be another way...
There's no time, Keeper.
If you're all going to leave Elworth alive, if I'm never going to turn into a monster in front of you again, this is the only way...
You'll die here!
"Even so... what of it?"
She drives her blade into the rock. Soaked strands of hair hang across her face, freezing into slivers of ice that sway with her trembling shoulders.
The freezing wind tears across the mountain without pause, and dull crashes roll out one after another.
Pain comes at her in waves, but right now the voice in her head is perfectly clear.
There are so many things I never wanted to do. So many things I was forced, driven to do.
<Change>Hand her... over... to me!
Lost the ability to even speak?
Then put your words, put everything you feel, into your blade. Let me hear your rage through the fight!
Don't bother. Still think you're the noble foster daughter of the magistrate?
Tainted blood can only produce a traitor like you.
ANSWER ME! Have I been abandoned?!
In terms of outcome, yes, but...
Her shaking hands can no longer hold the hilt, and the sword rings with a metallic hum as the shuddering rock strikes against it.
I used to believe revenge was all I had... but only today do I understand, I had the meaning wrong, and I picked the wrong enemy.
Only power great enough can carry out our revenge. Revenge is the only meaning we have.
The mountain wanted to see me, so I came to see It.
I am your future, "Helot." The day you find the courage to raise your sword against Fate, you will become me.
So you want revenge on the traitor, and you want to protect Francis, the one who saved you. But that's not what fighting is.
Not for protection, not for vengeance, not for validation. Fighting is just fighting.
Your world's too small, always chasing the faint glow of someone else's light like a moth.
If you get the chance, go and explore a wider world.
Let go! You can't hold on much longer.
I... won't...
Let go... at this rate you'll die too!
I'm not leaving a single one of my companions behind... never!
...
Lotan told me that fighting is only fighting. Not to protect anyone. Not for revenge.
I thought about it for a long time, and I finally understand why you and your Awakeners are so strong...
I think Lotan was wrong. Maybe she never realized it herself.
Lotan, Lily, you, every one of you has something you want to protect.
Protecting others, that is the Fate meant for me.
You're the one who taught me that, Keeper.
"BOOM..."
The mountain heaves again, and the thick ice over the frozen lake splits apart, crack by crack.
Beneath the broken slabs, black Pustules churn wildly, boiling like soup, spreading wider and wider.
Helot, I'm not leaving a comrade behind!
I don't like owing anyone. You saved me, so after today we're even.
I can feel the other "Helot"... She's waiting for me up in the mountain. She wants us to take revenge on Fate together.
You haven't abandoned anyone. The rest of the way, let us walk it ourselves.
We're warriors. Warriors are born to fight.
This is the end we chose for ourselves... This is a fight between us and the mountain.
Helot pulls out the black thorn.
The clouds banked over the mountain are thick, and no sunlight gets through.
Black slime coils around Helot and binds her fast. Her mindless madness hardens into iron chains, holding her down under shackle upon shackle.
...
She hauls the chains on her thin shoulders, dragging herself forward. The weight drags at her until she can't breathe, and she drops to her knees in the snow.
Helot...
Forbidden whispers pour endlessly into her ears, and somewhere in that thick, murky noise Helot hears the mountain and her own heart beating in time.
Thoom, thoom, thoom...
Beneath the hard rock and frozen earth, the thing that has woken hums with impatient hunger, craving her.
She steps onto the summit.
The frenzied peak stirs. The ground shudders, and a bitter wind tears at Helot's thin clothes without moving her an inch.
Black slurry surges up out of the peak in a flood, rising like a towering wave to close in all around her...
@3 returns... destroy @2... forget @3 @2... come... return to @3...
...return to @3...
If we win, the ice and snow of Elworth will melt away. And then the two of us will return to the world together.
Just wait, Keeper.
Helot briefly turns her head. You think you see a fleeting smile cross her face.
She turns to face that undying blue flame and raises the black spike in her hand...
Battle. Begin.
A declaration, and a command. The black slurry crashes down without end, swallowing everything on the summit.
The Elworth Mountains shake. Milky ice fog billows up along the ranges, and the stiff, lumbering slopes twist and thrash as if fighting something off.
The burning clouds are swept into a vast vortex that closes over the whole peak. Terrible power breaks loose unchecked, as if it would grind the sky itself to pieces...
...
How long it lasts, you cannot say. At last the dust settles, and the ground beneath your feet goes still.
Lily, herself again, comes over and takes your hand.
Helot... Helot's gone.
The mountains breathe, slow and steady. You lift your head and look up at the sky.
Coarse snowflakes fall and gather on your head until your hair goes white.
Elworth is quiet, as if nothing ever happened here.
10. One Spring, before the fight
35 linesProfessor Elvis is still unconscious, but it has been confirmed that there is no threat to his life.
The guide is receiving professional psychiatric care as well. The doctors say that even after something so deeply traumatic, his mental stability is still remarkably high.
All through the treatment, what he asked about most was you and Lily... For an ordinary man, that's rare.
The Church of the Lightbearers attempted to revive the snowy mountain to power their next plan. Thankfully, you stopped them in time.
The school is very pleased with how this turned out. They've decided to compensate...
Her Silver... did they find it?
You nod and turn back to the window.
As for finding Helot's Silver Core, you hadn't held much hope to begin with.
Ramona, do you think the snow on the Elworth Mountains will ever melt?
...Elworth is a land of bitter cold. The wind and snow there never let up, not all year.
Right. Everyone knows that. The wind and snow of Elworth never let up.
That promise, swept to your ears on the wind, sounds like a farewell meant to comfort you.
The sky runs with crimson as rich as oil paint, and the last of the light pools in your hands. Outside the window, the Mythag University campus lies steeped in the dying sun.
A whole week asleep... How's the recovery coming along, Keeper?
The best years of your youth shouldn't be squandered in a sickbed.
Now then, guess what I've brought you?
%player% is a patient and shouldn't be drinking... A little common sense wouldn't hurt, Professor Dexter.
I owe %player% this drink.
What happened was, in part, my fault. So I've come to apologize in person.
Believe me, keeping a bottle this good untouched for this long was no small feat. It took real willpower to keep my hands off it.
Drinking is hardly the right way to say sorry.
Talk like that wounds me, and the wine as well, Miss Ramona.
And besides the wine, I've brought you both another gift.
He tosses down a newspaper.
The wine and the news, you'll like them both. Rest well, Keeper.
Dexter gives you an elegant little bow and eases the door shut behind him.
Dealing with Professor Dexter, I sometimes wish I'd studied more rhetoric.
She picks up the newspaper Dexter left behind.
"It is reported that the perennially snow-capped mountains deep in the heart of Elworth, which recently suffered a major avalanche, are showing bizarre signs of thawing..."
You snap your head around and take the paper from her.
In the blurry, ink-smudged photograph, the wind and snow over the mountains have stopped.
A thin dandelion has pushed up through snow that never melts.
Greeting the first spring Elworth has ever known.
