Need Not the Sword

Yun Qingping rescues an old man bent on revenge and ends up becoming his teacher. If words can't distinguish between hatred and equanimity, how can kung fu do it?

Pain. The pain of broken bones.

The blow strikes him square in the chest. His final memories are of falling toward the bottom of the cliff, defiant even at death's door, and deeply humiliated.

Where is he? Is he dead, or...?

The ground at the bottom of this cliff is surprisingly soft...

Injured Old Man

Urk...

Where... am I?

(Looks down at his bandaged wound)

Someone rescued me.... I didn't die! Incredible!

The old man struggles out of bed and grabs his sword.

He looks around, wanting to thank the one who saved his life. Surveying the space, he finds it unadorned yet orderly, with books and scrolls neatly arranged—a sign of an exceptionally conscientious owner.

An open notebook lies on the table. The old man, drawn to the handwriting, starts flipping through the pages.

Injured Old Man

Such steady handwriting. Not a single unnecessary flourish. If the writer isn't a calligrapher, then they must be someone who's honed their craft for decades.

'On Martial Arts': 'Ten years gathering every style under Heaven, yet the true meaning seems ever more distant and elusive.'

The old man flips the page, the hairs on his white beard immediately stand up.

There are detailed drawings of a scene he immediately recognizes—the fight where his enemy knocked him off the cliff.

Annotations line the edges of the drawings. They point out his blunder—his failure to handle his enemy's underhanded trick. They even show a clever counter. The old man's face flushes hot, a breath pressing tight in his chest.

The old man steadies himself against the wall and hurries out. Outside, there's a narrow river with a hemp rope stretched across it. A young man walks toward him on the rope, which doesn't sway in the slightest.

The young man crosses the rope with one hand behind his back, the other holding vegetables, moving as if it's simply part of his daily training. When he spots the old man, he heads over to him. He's clearly the owner of the house.

Yun Qingping

You're awake, elder! How do you feel?

Injured Old Man

What is your relationship to that bastard?!

Yun Qingping

I think there's some misunderstanding. I don't know you at all. I was out for a walk when I saw you lying there, unconscious, clearly having fallen off that cliff, and I brought you back to my house.

Injured Old Man

You're lying! You were there when I fought him! You were watching!

Yun Qingping

Oh. You're referring to the sketches in my book? My apologies. I simply guessed what might have happened, based on my own intuition.

Injured Old Man

You guessed?!

Yun Qingping

The calluses on your hands, your sinewy arms, your strong calves, and the wear patterns on your sword gave me a rough idea of your fighting style. Factoring in your injuries, I was able to piece together what happened.

I spent some time in the army scribbling down other people's techniques—it's just a little thing I picked up.

Injured Old Man

Hmm...so maybe I was mistaken... it was a misunderstanding.

Chen Xiuqing

*cough* Sorry about that. I'm Chen Xiuqing, the owner of the sword hall up on the mountain. May I ask your name?

Yun Qingping

I'm Yun Qingping. I'm taking some time away from work to travel and reflect.

Chen Xiuqing

Cultivating the mind, hmm… But you know, if young people get too caught up in theory, it can get in the way of real practice. You should understand—the counters you've written only work on paper.

Yun Qingping

You know your sword well, elder—naturally you're right. When you deliver that strike, your balance is already off, and with the weight of the sword itself, it's impossible to reach the throat.

However, to make your blade land exactly on the sweet spot, you just need to make a small adjustment.

Chen Xiuqing

Oh! Tell me! What kind of adjustment?

Yun Qingping

Elder, the sword you use has an unusual shape, with a tip that's heavier than a typical blade. You might be used to it and not notice any issue, but why not try hooking your index finger around the guard.

Chen Xiuqing

Absurd! Do you think a sword grip is that easy to change?!

Yun Qingping

It takes years, even over a decade of practice. I'm only telling you it's possible—whether you choose to do it is up to you.

Chen Xiuqing looks skeptical but walks off, deep in thought. A moment later, the sounds of sword practice echo from behind the house.

The sound of sword practice halts, then resumes, then halts again, as if he's working through it carefully. Suddenly, he staggers back to Yun, sword in hand.

Chen Xiuqing

How did you know that would work?

Yun Qingping

Your sword's center of gravity is only slightly shifted, but in many battles, that tiny discrepancy makes all the difference.

Chen Xiuqing

At your age? You can't handle it... but you're going to accept it!

This bow is my thanks to you for saving my life!

Yun Qingping

Oh...?

Chen Xiuqing

And with this bow...

Chen Xiuqing stiffens his neck, as if forcing himself to bow. He struggles for a long moment, lets out a pained sigh, and finally lowers his head in another bow.

Chen Xiuqing

I ask you to take me as your apprentice in swordsmanship!

Yun Qingping

What...?

Elder, you don't need to follow me. The riverbank's damp—it's bad for your injury. And don't raise the idea of taking me as your teacher again. I've explained it so many times. I just record techniques; I couldn't possibly call myself a teacher.

Chen Xiuqing

I've been watching you here all this time. What are you up to?

Yun Qingping

Fincatching, and observing. The fins and the water are one. Let your eyes see and your heart understand...

Chen Xiuqing

Wha—

Wow!

You should have told me this earlier! They all floated to the surface! I'll go scoop them up for you... Young on.... master, how many fins do you need?

Yun Qingping

......

Elder...what happened to all the weeds in this field? How are your injuries?

Chen Xiuqing

Hahaha! Young people really do have a lazy streak. No need to thank me—I cleared the weeds and brought the water. These old bones are still strong! If there's anything else that needs doing, just say the word!

Yun Qingping

......

Good sir, sit down. Let us chat for a bit.

Yun Qingping quietly lowers his rolled-up sleeves, forced to abandon his plan to exercise by weeding the field. He sits in the bare field with a sigh, finally asking the question he'd been deliberately avoiding.

Yun Qingping

Elder, why do you wish to become my apprentice?

Chen Xiuqing

Sigh... tsk... sigh! All right, I'll be honest with you. A man can be killed but not humiliated. I have a score to settle.

My trusted disciple has betrayed me. I taught that bastard everything I knew, but he sold his honor for a pittance. He destroyed my sword hall's reputation just to make me sell him that plot of land.

If I was 20 years younger, no, 10 years younger, that scoundrel would never have dared to engage me in combat!

Yun Qingping

Even if you improve your swordsmanship, elder, what will that change?

Chen Xiuqing

Whether he used dirty tricks or not, losing to him just means my skills weren't good enough. I accept that!

But if I don't settle this grudge, how can I bear this humiliation? How can I hold my head up high among the other fighters?

Yun Qingping

But you want to learn 'revenge swordplay' from me, elder. I'm afraid that...

Young Yun Qingping

Ugh...

Yumen Field Medic

Come here, child. I added some painkillers to this medicine. After you drink it, your pain will go away.

Also, I'm usually the only person in this clinic. You don't have to grit your teeth and stifle your groans.

Young Yun Qingping

(Drinks the medicine)

Yumen Field Medic

You are really a brave child. Go to sleep. Get your rest. That's the only way you'll heal.

Young Yun Qingping

Doctor... my parents were killed by criminals. Ever since then, I've been on my own...

Yumen Field Medic

I heard you tried to save your parents with a sword, but those men knocked you down into the fields. You held on until the Grandmaster found you. You're a strong boy.

Young Yun Qingping

From now on, I'll have to take care of myself... About my injuries, could you be honest with me? Can I really get better?

Yumen Field Medic

Of course... there's a high probability that you'll recover.

Young Yun Qingping

Uhuh... And after I get better? What then?

Yumen Field Medic

Umm... well. Rest assured, your wounds are not fatal. After you recover, you should be able to stand again.

Young Yun Qingping

Alright.

Yumen Field Medic

But even if you're able to walk, your body will be weaker than most people's. From now on, you need to treat it like a sandcastle in the rain. Movements or impacts that wouldn't harm others could cause you to collapse.

Young Yun Qingping

Okay. Thank you for your honesty.

......

(Bites down to conceal the pain) (Begins to sob silently)

...in the beginning, I was fine. Before they arrived, everything was fine...

The child pounds the bed with his feeble fists, venting his anger again and again. The bandages soak with blood once more, yet he seems not to feel the pain.

The medic says nothing. Faced with someone in such tragic circumstances, anything he might say feels pointless.

Yumen Field Medic

Ah, listen to the sounds outside—that's the Grandmaster returning with his men. I heard they captured the whole gang that attacked your family.

Yun Qingping immediately struggles to sit up. Seeing the anger in his eyes, the medic instinctively steps forward to steady him. He wants to help him see his enemies brought to justice with his own eyes.

However, when he finally manages to sit up, he seems to think of something. After hesitating for a long moment, he slowly turns his head away, towards the wall.

Young Yun Qingping

No. I don't want to look… If this pain is going to last my whole life… I don't want to see their faces every time it hurts.

I'm not letting go of my hatred for them—I'm just freeing myself.

Chen Xiuqing

Young Master?

Yun Qingping

Elder, did I disturb you by talking in my sleep?

Chen Xiuqing

We all have stuff we'd rather not talk about. Don't worry—I didn't hear anything.

Yun Qingping

We can't change the past, but we can still shape our future.

Chen Xiuqing

What are you mumbling about? If you don't need anything, I'd like to go back to sleep.

Yun Qingping

Dear elder, since you actually called me, 'master,' I suppose I must accept your request. I have only one thing to ask of you in return—

Chen Xiuqing

What is it? Tell me!

Yun Qingping

While you're studying swordsmanship with me, you may not unsheathe your sword.

Chen Xiuqing

What? You want me to study swordsmanship without wielding my sword?! I've taught swordsmanship my whole life, I—

Yun Qingping

Starting now, at least for the time being, you are my student.

Chen Xiuqing

Ngh—

First day of practice

Yun Qingping

Elder, your waist, a third time.

Chen Xiuqing

(Clenches his waist, quite unwillingly) For revenge...

Yun Qingping

Hey. As soon as you move your waist, your legs go out of sync.

Chen Xiuqing

(The veins of his temple bulge) Must...hold...on...

Yun Qingping

'The tip of your sword' is drooping too low. Let's reset the timer.

Chen Xiuqing

This is only a wooden staff...

Yun Qingping

There is a sword in your heart. What do you need a physical sword for? Your legs are wrong again. Reset the timer.

Chen Xiuqing

Again?! Your words are gentle, but your methods are harsh! Who did you learn that from?!

Yun Qingping

Every kung fu principle I learned, I learned from my master.

Chen Xiuqing

I'm talking about your torture methods!

Yun Qingping

Mind and form are unified, of the same lineage and source.

Chen Xiuqing

Ha! It looks like you did suffer under your master, an unreasonable man, a man who spoke no words of reason.

Yun Qingping

I know you are kidding, elder. However, it is true that my master 'spoke no words of reason.' After all, the most vital truths cannot be 'spoken' into understanding.

Instead, he let me learn reason myself.

Chongyue

Qingping, straighten your waist. Use the power from your hips to deliver your sword forward.

Teenaged Yun Qingping

......

Chongyue

Your breaths are uneasy once again. Do you need to rest?

Teenaged Yun Qingping

No. I can keep going. You asked me to practice with you, master. I should be thankful and not complain.

......

Chongyue

Do you have any doubts in your heart?

Teenaged Yun Qingping

Yes. I do. Master, don't you think someone like me looks completely out of place here on the training ground?

Everyone else is swinging huge swords and axes, but you're just making me hold this little twig like it's a sword. While they're slashing and hacking away at wooden dummies, I'm stuck poking this big stone with this flimsy little branch...

Admittedly, the only thing I can lift is this dry little twig, but it's so fragile that even the slightest bit of force snaps it or smashes it into powder.

Master, you've tasked me with moving a stone that is almost my height, with nothing but a dry twig. I am here every day, practicing only this... Is this not... wasted effort?

How can I ever hope to move a giant stone with just a small twig?

Chongyue

I should have explained it all to you earlier, but let me ask you, have I ever been neglectful in your training?

Teenaged Yun Qingping

No. Never.

Master, you mean, you really believe I can do this?

Chongyue

Water flows over stone, the wind blows over through the hills—what has ever truly blocked their path?

Teenaged Yun Qingping

Water flows over stone, the wind blows over through the hills, but....

I understand. Water flows over stone instead of confronting it directly. Moving this stone requires 'soft strength'.

I must lead with my legs, then my hips, and then my arms...

The wind blows over through the hills. Master, you mean I must use agility and a 'light touch'.

I must center my breath in my core and identify its weak spots...

Ouch! My finger's all swollen!

It snapped!

It snapped again!

It's been three months... this cursed withered old wood! This stubborn boulder! These... worthless arms! Those damned bandits!

Using these withered twigs is a fool's errand!

(Sobs)

The heavens are not kind, and the raindrops show no mercy. The young man calms down, wipes his tears, picks up another withered twig amidst the rain, and walks towards the large rock that he has been struggling with for three months, to no avail.

Teenaged Yun Qingping

I must use my lower half, my waist, then my arms. I'll use the strength from my hips to push this thing forward—

......

Legs, waist, arms... and push!

......

The rain keeps getting heavier. Listening to its falling raindrops, the boy calms down, without even realizing it. He focuses inward as usual, not noticing the water rising over his shoes.

The waterlogged earth feels unfamiliar underfoot, and even the twig feels slightly different in his hand. He absorbs it all, as the rain continues to fall.

Water flows over stone and moistens the soil below. I must harness that power and—

move the stone.

Yun opens his eyes. He has just shifted the rock, albeit by a small, nearly imperceptible distance. He lifts his head and gazes at the unending sky and the rain falling like rivers. He smiles, realizing that the rock was not as invincible as he thought.

After one month of practice

Yun Qingping

Elder, you've reached a new level in your practice. Tomorrow you may swap out this staff for your real sword.

At first, you were always honing that sword, but these past few days I haven't seen you working on it. Tonight, perhaps we should bring it out...

Chen Xiuqing

That's not necessary. I'll keep using this staff. It's convenient.

Yun Qingping

But eventually your hands must be in sync with your sword...

Chen Xiuqing

First I need to temper my killer instinct and focus on technique. That's why you had me put down my sword in the first place, right? I shall continue to work on 'tempering' if I wish. You need not concern yourself with that.

Yun Qingping

Very well.

After several months of practice

Chen Xiuqing

You're watching the fins again? Why are you making space for me? I don't want to watch them.

Yun Qingping

You're tired of watching the fins.

Chen Xiuqing

The river carries the fins, who shift and change as they dart through the water. When I understood what you were watching at the river, I was completely mesmerized. How could I ever grow tired of it?

It's just that every time I really focus on it, every trembling leaf, every ripple in the river, all of heaven and earth seem to pour into these old eyes. It's just too much to take in.

I really admire you for your ability to be so focused and yet also so calm. A master is still a master, and I am far from that.

Yun Qingping

Elder, can you go scoop up a fin for me?

Chen Xiuqing

Of course! What's so hard about that?

As the old man speaks, he doesn't strike the water with his palm but instead kneels down and carefully studies the current. Yun Qingping smiles.

Follow the water to follow the fins. The old man gently traces the current, and the fin softly leaps into the bucket beside Yun Qingping.

Yun Qingping

(Claps hands) Elder, this fin is our parting gift. Starting today, there's nothing more I can teach you.

Cultivate your mind and body. No one can teach you the road ahead—you have to walk it on your own. When I left the place where I grew up, my teacher told me the same thing.

Chen Xiuqing

Cultivate mind... and body... good, okay.

Then after we part ways here today, we might not cross paths again in the jianghu.

Yun Qingping isn't surprised when he hears this. He inclines his head with a smile in acknowledgment. The elder gives him a long, deep bow, already carrying a subtle air of newfound mastery.

He departs with a loud laugh, fading into the deep forest without a trace. The room that used to ring with the sounds of practice is now utterly empty.

The owner of the house sits quietly for a moment, then rises, taking only a few possessions before setting off to wander once more. He leaves behind only one thing: an old sword, slanted against the fading sunlight.
