The Fall of Giant
4 scenes, 216 lines
1. Unmoored Sea, before the fight
72 linesSigh for the Apostle of the Sea. Sigh for our light, our hope. Fated to be cast out upon the sea, we cry out, we mourn, we weep ourselves dry.
Oh, please watch over the afflicted! Cast your merciful gaze upon us, and grant us the black wellspring of life.
Mercy, mercy, mercy...
...
You're awake?
The sun bakes the waves until the spray runs hot, and the salt wind carries a heavy reek of brine into your nose.
Is this... Morpheus?
You live up to your reputation, sickliest whelp in the clan. One wave breaks over you and you're out cold half the day.
They sent you to "escort" me to the witch? Don't make me laugh. Their intentions couldn't be plainer...
Goliath sucks in a pained breath. Beneath him, a pool of dark blood spreads slowly, creeping all the way to your feet.
They want the two of us to die out here on this sea.
My lord, you're badly wounded! What happened...
Tangled memories come flooding back.
In the last battle that mattered, Goliath underestimated the enemy and lost to a rival tribe.
The Philistines had no tolerance for defeat. Gravely wounded, Goliath was cast out with nothing but a battered little boat, and you...
The weakest Philistine alive, the kind who'd lose a wrestling match to a ten-year-old.
I remember Chief Iglenn saying there's a mysterious witch out in these waters, and she uses some kind of black slime...
Pour it into the wound and your injuries will heal, my lord! I'm sure of it!
You blurt out the witch's legend on reflex, and only afterward does something about it start to feel wrong.
Wait. That slime, could it be D-Slime...
Chief... Iglenn?
A smile spreads slowly across Goliath's cold face.
So he's your new chief already. Quick work. That's my beloved kinsmen for you.
Splash!!
The rotting little boat finally gives out under the waves. A gaping hole splits open in the hull, and the sea pours in.
Tch. Just as I thought.
This is bad, we're going to drown! I need something to plug that hole, fast...
...Huh.
Goliath sprawls against the deck, bored, letting the blood beneath him turn the rising water red.
Relax. Even if we get this boat patched up, they've got a thousand ways to make sure I die out here.
My advice? Forget about me. Get off the boat and swim back on your own.
Tell them you killed me. If you're lucky, you might even keep your neck.
And what about you...?
Me?
Goliath takes in the view across the water, then tilts his head toward you with a faint smile.
I'll sit here, enjoy the sea, and wait to die while I'm at it.
...?
So grim. Is this really the Goliath I know?
Oh, and one more thing you should know.
There's a hole right behind your backside. In my experience, this boat is about to snap in half, so you don't have long to think it over.
Splash!!
As if to prove him right, a wave slams into the boat and splits it clean in two.
Aaaaah!!
Briny seawater pours into your lungs. You open your mouth, and more of it rushes in to swallow you whole.
You sink deeper and deeper, and breathing grows harder...
As your mind fades, you hear what sounds like a weary sigh.
Before you can react, a huge hand closes around your hair and hauls you out of the sea without effort.
*Cough, cough*... Urgh!
Hold on tight. This is the only thing keeping us both alive.
You look around and realize the two of you are crammed onto a single plank of wood that's barely holding together.
What the hell... Philistines are born to the water. They sail every sea there is. How can you not even swim?
Are you really a Philistine?
Forgive me. This body of mine has been sickly since childhood...
Thank you, my lord. If not for you, I'd be dead already...
...Doesn't look like they sent you to kill me.
You were fighting too hard to live back there. You can't fake that.
Goliath pushes the wet hair back off his forehead and looks out at the fog-covered sea.
When we went under, you latched onto me like a crab and wouldn't let go for a second. Why?
Uh? To stay alive, obviously...
Goliath's voice trails off, as if the question is meant as much for himself as for you.
Cast out by his own people, badly wounded, the road ahead of him looks like the fog-shrouded sea, endless and empty.
...
My lord, you keep saying you're waiting to die. But when the waves came, you found this plank and pulled yourself up, and you saved me too.
...Only because you wouldn't let go of me.
That doesn't matter. What matters is that thanks to you, my lord, we're both still alive.
Why do you think that is?
Goliath shakes his head.
Honestly, I don't know either. But there's one thing I've figured out...
Goliath lowers his head and studies you for a moment.
I think I finally understand how a wretch like you has lived this long.
2. Sunken Horn, before the fight
52 linesSunlight scorches the surface of the sea, as if to wear away all life in the endless heat.
The plank you and Goliath cling to is the only island left in the sea. You squint up at the blazing sun, and another wave of dizziness rolls through you.
Sorry, I don't feel so good... just let me sleep a while...
A tunic reeking of sweat and blood drops over your head, and the stench jolts you upright.
*Cough, cough*... Ugh!
Heatstroke. Keep that over your head to block the sun, and don't take it off.
Nothing like a shirt off my lord's back to clear a man's head... So where do we go now? To find the witch?
What damn witch? Don't tell me you actually swallowed that nonsense.
Only a fool puts his life in someone else's hands.
The witch...
According to Goliath's Awakener file, this so-called "witch" can only be Miryam.
Whatever came of it later, Miryam did save Goliath's life.
My lord, you're gravely wounded. There's no other way now, let's find the witch together...
BANG!!
The blow knocks the breath out of you, a hand clamps around your throat, and your feet leave the plank as the giant hauls you up to his face.
I'll say this once: don't look at me like that, and don't take that tone with me.
The last thing Goliath needs is pity from the weak.
His voice is flat, his face unchanged, as if he were only making small talk about the weather.
But you are close to him, close enough to see the red rims of his eyes, from pain and from refusing to yield.
For this one moment the glory of the sea's master falls away from him, and he is only another fish lost in the endless water, no different from you.
Sorry... uh, my lord...
Wooooo,
A low horn sounds somewhere far off across the water.
The weight leaves your throat all at once. Goliath lets go and turns toward the horn.
Cough, cough... ah, saved...
Interesting... Afraid I'm not dying fast enough, so they've all come together to see me off?
Soon a great fleet closes in and pens you at its center, and the drifting plank becomes the only island in these waters.
You are surrounded.
Behold, and let me present the most valiant chieftain in all Philistine history! The mighty giant whose will never bends! The hero of the tribe, dreaded across every sea, who looks down on the whole world...
Lord Goliath!
The glare off the water is too bright; all you can make out is a dark shape standing at the bow, looking down at you.
Our newer brothers may not know this, but our lord here took a grievous wound in a duel and was very nearly captured, and so dragged our whole people to the brink of ruin!
Ruin came so close it swallowed over half the tribe! Praise be to you, my most beloved Lord Goliath!
Heh... I could never claim such a triumph all for myself, Iglenn.
Who was it that cowered behind me and refused to march? And who was the first to drop his weapon and go running home in tears?
You...!
Iglenn's face flushes red. His cloudy eyes twitch and dart until they settle on you.
Ah, so even with his people all but gone, our chieftain still has one... very sweet little follower.
The shame of the Philistines. A weakling who can't take a single punch from his own kin, and he wants to follow you and call himself a warrior...
Hahahaha...!!
Goliath lifts his head and looks at you in surprise through the jeering laughter.
Little one. You came with me by choice?
Uh... that does seem to be how I remember it...
Touching, isn't it? I let slip a couple of words about the witch, and this little fool swallowed every one of them, dying to tag along after you...
Couldn't have stopped the kid if I tried. Haha...
Splash!!
The laughter cuts off. A vicious gust screams past, and a severed leg rolls to a stop in front of them all.
AAAGH... my leg, MY LEG!!
The old overlord of the seas stands over Iglenn like a mountain, and the menace pouring off him chills the blood.
There's been a fly buzzing around my ear this whole time...
Goliath takes his time wiping the blood off his blade, then lifts his head and smiles coldly at Iglenn.
Iglenn. Did I ask you a damn thing?
3. Sunken Horn, after the fight
26 linesNo good, there are too many of them... This is only going to get worse...
I can... still... kill!
The heavy blast of horns rolls on and on across the water. With a bounty like that, warriors keep pouring into the hunt.
Goliath is almost spent. He swings the great blade again, but this time he is too slow, and someone finds the opening.
He drops to his knees. Bone gleams white in the open wound, and the blood runs like a stream that will never dry.
Now! All at once, finish him!!
The warriors closing in swarm forward like sharks scenting blood.
No, Lord Goliath!!
Everything in front of you seems to freeze.
Instinct takes over before you can stop it. You hurl yourself forward and plant yourself in front of Goliath.
Ngh...
The blade opens your throat. You clamp a trembling hand over the wound as blood keeps welling through your fingers, your mind a formless blur.
Are you out of your mind? What are you doing throwing yourself in the way?!
I don't know... my body... it just moved on its own...
Sorry, Lord Goliath...
A poisoned arrow tears through the air and buries itself in Goliath's shoulder. He pitches into you, unable to stop himself.
Goliath... Goliath the giant has fallen at last!
His head is mine! Don't any of you dare fight me for it!
A dull, furious tremor runs through the sea. The giant blots out the blazing sun above you, then crashes down.
Your blood runs together with his, staining the blue water crimson.
You hear wind, waves, and far-off cheering and brawling. All that waits for the two of you now is endless slaughter and humiliation.
Salt water licks at the wound on your neck, and the pain has you sucking in sharp breaths.
Goliath is in no better shape than you.
Battered as he is, the sight of you in such a sorry state still puts a nasty grin on his face.
You know... you really ought to find a mirror and get a look at that ridiculous face of yours.
Worthless, just as I thought.
4. Golden Refrain, before the fight
66 linesSigh for the Apostle of the Sea. Sigh for our light, our hope. Exiled to the ocean, we wail, we mourn, we weep until no tears are left.
Your vision dims all at once. The harsh sunlight sinks away, and a thick fog settles over the whole sea.
Oh, watch over the stricken. Look upon us with mercy...
The strange old song drifts across the water. At the bow, the woman fades in and out of sight, a ghost prowling the mist.
Huh? Is someone singing?
The witch, it's that witch!!
It can't be... Then the legend was true...
Mercy. Mercy. Mercy...
The sea's pale calm breaks apart. Purple-black serpents burst from the water and coil tight around every man aboard.
Ngh... AAAAAHH!!
A thin, wrong sound, and the serpents harden into black blades that punch clean through them.
Get off me... Huh?
A soft, cold touch spreads from your neck where the black serpent coils, and the wound begins to close.
My wounds... they're gone?
The black serpent abandons you both without hesitation and whips around Iglenn, coiling tight.
Run, the witch is com... ing...
Black serpents come writhing out of Iglenn's eyes and mouth. He crumples before he can finish the sentence.
Moments later, broken bodies rise to the surface, too many to count.
It is a silent slaughter.
That's it? Impressive. Miryam never disappoints.
You saved us... Who are you?
The woman in the black veil says nothing. She stands straight at the bow of her ship, with nothing between you but a wall of fog.
Close enough to touch, and a world away.
She looks at the dumbstruck Goliath, and a faint smile touches her lips. She lifts a hand and points into the distance, a silent invitation.
Then she turns her ship about and drifts away.
Wait, don't go... Don't go!
The fog thins, a shaft of daylight breaks through the clouds, and the spray takes on the color of gold.
You blink, and the far end of the sea is empty.
The wind and waves die down. You and Goliath crowd onto the one plank still whole, both of you gasping.
The sea, blue not long ago, is red with blood now, and the two of you drift in it like weeds.
So we still don't have a ship... I've got no idea how we get home now.
We're not going home.
Goliath draws up one knee and stares off in the direction Miryam went.
I've decided. I'm going after that witch. Coming with me?
Ahem. "Only a fool puts his life in someone else's hands."
You drop your voice and give his own words back to him in his own growl.
Hmph. That's because the stakes weren't high enough. Power that can crush everything in a heartbeat, I've never seen the like.
And she did help us back there. She even invited me along...
But what if... it's a trap?
...What matters is that thanks to you, my lord, we're both still alive.
Why do you think that is?
Now I know the answer.
What is it?
A flock of sea geese sweeps past. White wings beat like clouds in flight, riding free on the sea wind.
Goliath pays the birds no mind. He stares ahead, his eyes bright with excitement.
Because I am Goliath.
The longest-reigning chief in Philistine history. The mighty giant whose will never bends. The tribal hero whose name shakes every sea, Goliath the Giant.
Even if I have one follower left, even if there's only one sliver of a chance, I can rise again.
That witch is my last chance. She alone can grant me absolute power.
Trap or not, I'm going.
Then why save me? A "useless" man like me is hardly going to be much help...
You lean hard on that one word, and Goliath roars with laughter.
Sunlight breaks through the clouds in a wash of gold, and loose strands of hair drift and dance beneath the bright blue sky.
No man in this world ever got anywhere as a commander with nobody left to command.
Listen, little one, you're nobody's dead weight. You're the one and only follower of Goliath the Giant, and nobody could ever take your place.
When I've won my empire, I'll make you a tribal chief at the very least!
...That really won't be necessary.
The sky darkens before you notice. The sunset runs along the horizon in rivers of glittering gold.
Hey, you know what? Heroes only get to be heroes because people like us make them look good.
So I matter too, see...
Mm...
The small, broken words scatter like dandelion seeds on the sea wind, carried off somewhere very far away.
You and Goliath sit on a few thin planks, from far enough away, two little leaves adrift on a golden sea.
No one knows where the two of you will end up.
