Background
In Farche, the nomadic Tuharta Clan is wiped out by a great sandstorm.
Cartuja leads the few survivors as they wander in search of a new home, working day and night as a mercenary to raise enough money to save his clan.
Lore
In Arena Story, Cartuja appears inside the Pyramid alongside Jecht and is quick to sense danger, warning him when Karin suddenly attacks them.
After Judith intervenes, the misunderstanding is cleared up, and Cartuja calmly accepts Karin’s apology once Judith explains that she had mistaken him for another Suin.
From there, Cartuja becomes part of the group investigating the Pyramid, discussing Yuna’s disappearance and the reports of another troublesome Suin, which Judith strongly implies is connected to Armin and someone they already know.
Later in Arena Story, Cartuja continues acting as one of the more reasonable members of the group.
When Ventus suddenly appears and offers to guide them, Cartuja is the first to hold everyone back and insist on hearing him out rather than attacking blindly.
Even after agreeing to work with Ventus, however, he remains cautious, repeatedly asking for clearer explanations and openly identifying the Monolith as the likely destination Ventus is hiding from them.
He also notices that they are traveling along a path with no other contestants and listens carefully when Ventus explains that this secret route lies outside the normal rules of the tournament.
Cartuja also helps reveal the group dynamics around him.
He is polite toward Judith, Karin, Roozid, and Jecht, and his reactions show that he is often the one trying to keep everyone focused and cooperative.
Even when Karin distrusts Ventus for instinctive reasons, Cartuja treats suspicion as something that must be justified and not indulged without cause, which reinforces his measured and straightforward nature.
In Orbis Gladiatorium - Preliminaries, Cartuja takes on a more prominent and self-explanatory role.
Ras meets him in the Savara preliminaries, where Cartuja expresses surprise that Ras is entering a local tournament and then explains why he himself joined.
He describes the Gladiatorium as more than a simple test of strength, notes that the victor may join FIDELIS and receive the Axe of Heavenly Mandate, and clarifies that he did not come for the weapon itself but to answer the call to protect the world while representing the honor of the Swamp and Stone Tribe.
Cartuja then faces Ras in the first round and loses, but he accepts the result with grace.
Rather than dwelling on defeat, he says he enjoyed the match and feels honored to have fought someone he believes will win the event.
He goes on to explain that his people have long suffered prejudice and persecution, and that although he once prioritized their survival through questionable means, his experiences in Natalon taught him that protecting the world itself must come first.
Believing that supporting a just cause could also improve his people’s standing, he entrusts Ras with his chess piece and asks him to continue fighting for all that Cartuja holds dear.
Overall, the stories portray Cartuja as dependable, honorable, and pragmatic.
In Arena Story, he serves as a stabilizing presence among a suspicious and often chaotic group inside the Pyramid, while in Orbis Gladiatorium - Preliminaries he is shown as a proud chieftain and warrior whose sense of duty extends beyond his own tribe to the fate of Orbis itself.
