Background

During the Fall of the Dwarves, Thralia, She Who Stands, was a dignitary and sage of the hold of Runegarden. Rune-magic facilitated all aspects of daily life there. It was hit hard and fast by the Fall, its ruling thanes stunned and paralyzed.

Just before the attacks began, Runegarden scouts had reported a rich vein of magical crystals with unknown properties. When calamity struck, the thanes of Runegarden dispatched Thralia to extract these crystals and see if they could be useful in battle. Working for months under terrible pressure, Thralia discovered they possessed a will of defiance, submitting to a master only when tamed, and raged with hatred against the invading Demonspawn and Painsmiths. When socketed into arms and armor, the crystals turned aside both blows and spells with ease, and cut through the invaders' impure flesh with savage intensity.

Thralia and her cohort, armed with the crystals, fought their way back to Runegarden. But it was too late to save the Hold, now fully occupied by the enemy. They were met by a horde of Siroth's howling faithful, eager to wipe out the last remnants of Runegarden's greatness.

But Thralia would not yield. Through tears she led her crystal-clad Dwarves in a last stand of incredible bravery and violence. She inflicted vastly disproportionate casualties upon the enemy, who bled so profusely that they abandoned their show of force and withdrew back behind Runegarden's gates. Thralia's retainers dragged her thrashing and screaming from the battlefield, to fight another day.
