Is Krau good?

Krau's passive throws up a shield sized off his own HP for the whole team each time the enemy connects with an attack that hits the entire party, making him especially strong against teams that lean on wide attacks. Taking damage also shaves a turn off his own cooldown, with an extra cut after an all-enemy hit, letting him cycle back into his third skill fast; that skill is a defense-piercing hit on every enemy that scales with his HP and speed and gets stronger the longer the fight runs, while also granting the team two turns of immunity.

He's built tanky, stacking HP and defense, and mainly sees PvP use.

Strengths

  • Shields the whole team based on his own max HP against all-enemy attacks
  • Cooldown drops faster the more damage he takes
  • Third skill's damage scales up the longer the fight lasts and grants team immunity

Background

One of the Knights of Taranor, Krau's outgoing and confident personality often causes people to misunderstand his intentions, but he tends to silently push ahead with what he thinks is right.

He is risking everything he has to fight for the future of his homeland.

In Epic Seven X Frieren - Beyond Journey’s End, Krau first appears as the one assigning Ras and Mercedes to investigate the monster activity near Taranor and the possible Chaos Gate behind it.

After Frieren’s party arrives in Orbis, Krau receives them at Revenbol and agrees to let them stay for a while on the condition that they help organize the overcrowded royal storage.

In these early scenes, he is shown as practical and generous, willing to extend trust to strangers so long as they prove helpful, and ready to reward Frieren with a grimoire for her assistance.

Krau’s role becomes more important once the story moves into the royal storage.

He explains that the cluttered storehouse contains belongings left behind after the Archdemon War, including the weapons and equipment of heroes whose memory Taranor wishes to honor.

When Ras notices the Hilag Lance, Krau reveals what he knows of the Hilag family’s decline, explaining that the family line was severed during the war after Derek Hilag died and Theo Hilag became head of the house.

Although he does not initially understand why the lance affects Ras so deeply, his knowledge of House Hilag helps open the way for the story’s larger reflection on forgotten people and erased histories.

That theme comes fully into focus the next day, when Krau notices Zieg’s unusual fixation on the Hilag Lance and questions him about it.

After Ras reveals that the person connected to the lance was not Derek, but Victorika Hilag from the previous world, Krau is visibly shaken.

He realizes that Victorika was someone entirely lost from present memory and begins to recover a faint echo of the past, enough to understand the weight of what has been forgotten.

When Ras asks whether there is any meaning in learning about someone whose memory has vanished and who can never be met again, Krau answers that it is still worth knowing, because such a person must have wanted to leave something behind in the world and their will can still be carried on.

He then accepts the Hilag Lance as something he will safeguard himself, promising to preserve the spirit the Hilag family fought to protect and hoping that Victorika will forgive him for having lived so long without remembering her.

In this way, Krau becomes one of the story’s clearest expressions of its central idea that memory and legacy can survive even when history itself has been erased.

Krau also contributes much of the story’s lighter tone.

After the emotional exchange surrounding Victorika, he presents Frieren with the “legendary” grimoire he had kept for years, only for it to turn out to be a spell that makes rose petals scatter while riding a horse.

He enthusiastically demonstrates it with Ziegfried, turning the scene into one of the crossover’s most openly comic moments.

Even so, that humor still connects back to the story’s larger emotional thread, since Krau links the grimoire to the old Hilag estate and wonders whether it might somehow reflect Victorika’s wishes.

By the time Frieren’s party leaves Revenbol, Krau has become more than a host or quest-giver: he is one of the people most changed by Ras’s decision to speak openly about the forgotten Heirs.

Taken as a whole, Krau’s role in the story is that of a capable ruler, welcoming ally, and emotional inheritor of a forgotten legacy.

He helps set Frieren’s party on their way, provides them with shelter and trust, and then becomes the person through whom the story shows that even a memory erased from the world can still leave behind a duty, a promise, and a spirit worth preserving.
