A high-ranking official who has been serving the emperors of Theranhad for generations.

He is often addressed as the imperial guardian as he only appears when something that might affect the empire's future occurs.

A being shrouded in mystery, he has recently emerged once again from his long silence.

Aria / Aria / Friendly: Someone who shares the same sin, brought on by the great cause.

But nothing was left for either of them.

Sharun / Sharun / Friendly: A shaman who blindly obeys the emperor.

Though Sharun sometimes acts out of character, Zahhak considers her one of the people that he can trust.

Lua / Lua / Friendly: Zahhak only cooperated with Lua for his goal.

Though he knows what he has to sacrifice in the end, he cannot stop.

Ran / Ran / Rivals: He used to be the one person that Zahhak could trust.

But now, he is only but an obstacle to his plan.

Amid / Amid / Love: Amid was the single flower blooming in the midst of his dreary life.

But even if time were to somehow turn back, Zahhak would make the same decision all over.

In Phantasmal Barrier, Zahhak does not act in the story’s present-day reality, but he remains one of the central figures in Sharun’s memories and regrets.

Sharun recalls that after the emperor, misled by Lua, departed to fight the Wickeds and died, Zahhak seized the opportunity to bring the emperor’s young relative Zio forward as the new successor.

In those memories, Zahhak is shown carefully controlling the newly enthroned boy, telling him to keep quiet and not act rashly, while Sharun reflects that Zio became a puppet emperor backed by Zahhak.

As Sharun remembers more, Zahhak’s true ambitions become clearer.

She realizes that he was planning to obtain the power of Demuto and use the entire northern region of Theranhad as the stage for that ritual, with no regard for the countless lives that would be lost.

When Sharun questions him directly, Zahhak refuses to explain himself and insists that he is merely fulfilling his duty to protect Theranhad, while demanding that she obey him until the time is right.

In Sharun’s account, Zahhak is therefore not just a political manipulator, but someone willing to justify extreme sacrifice in pursuit of his goal.

The story also presents Zahhak as someone who, for a time, appeared to stand fully on Zio’s side, only to change course when he saw a chance to save Amid.

Sharun reflects that he then tried to use Zio’s ambitions against him, which links Zahhak directly to the disastrous chain of events that followed.

Later in the nightmare, Sharun is forced to relive the crucial turning point where Zio offers Zahhak a new path: if the Four Seasons Swords break the seal, a new ritual can begin, and Zahhak asks whether that method can save Amid.

Even as Sharun desperately tries to stop him and promises to look for another way, Zahhak accepts Zio’s offer.

For Sharun, this becomes one of the defining moments of his fall.

Taken as a whole, Zahhak’s role in Phantasmal Barrier is that of a decisive figure from the past whose choices shaped the ruin Sharun still suffers from.

He is remembered as intelligent, secretive, and ruthlessly goal-driven: the man who elevated Zio, pursued forbidden power, and chose a path that Sharun believes led both Zio and Theranhad toward disaster.

Even though he appears only in memory and illusion, his presence weighs heavily on the entire story because he is inseparable from the guilt and unresolved fear that the nightmare exploits within Sharun.
