A City of Glittering Gold
The incident at Aura Resort ends with an electrifying concert, and the notes reach even the slumbering Maiden of Remulia.
25 scenes, 754 lines
1. Scene 1
67 linesI'm...awake. What year is it? What's going on in the world? I need to see it for myself... I need to do what I can...
Thank you again for putting on such a wonderful performance.
If it's not too much trouble...might I ask you to put on a show for the resort? I see now how powerful music can be and I want to share that feeling with as many people as possible.
It doesn't have to be a full concert. Just a few songs would suffice.
What do you guys think?
Fantastic! In that case...
Hey, would you mind if I stayed here? I wanna get a closer look at the place.
Spiri?
I'll stick around too. You guys can head off to the resort.
Alright. Let us know if anything happens.
What's up, Spiri? Did you notice something?
No. I just... I dunno why, but I wanted to stay.
I know there's nothing we can do here, but still... I get the feeling I need to do something.
Are you worried about something?
Maybe. After we solved the whole Oswald thing, I just started feeling...anxious. But, I mean, can you blame me? We haven't figured out anything about who I am or how to cure Chelika.
Good point...
Remember when we got split up and you were getting treated at the resort?
I thought something might've changed by then, but...you were still on the verge of death.
Meaning...you and I are stuck together forever?
...I don't think so. If this keeps up, your life will keep slipping away until you're completely gone.
(Spiri... Are you still here? You haven't left me, right?)
(Of course I haven't. I'm right by your side.)
(Spiri... Spiri...)
(I'm here. I promise.)
(Chelika?)
(Aha... Ahaha...)
(AHHHHHH!)
(Chelika? Hey, Chelika. Answer me. Please, say something!)
While we were in that machine, I could tell that...little by little, Chelika's body was...
You mean...it's even worse than we thought?
I wouldn't worry too much. We're gonna find a way to save you, no matter what.
Did you guys hear that?
Am I seeing things?! Look!
Who...are you?
The Maiden of Remulia... Are you Spiri from this era?
You're awake?!
Who're you? And why do you look like me?
The name's Spiri. And I'm...
Uhh, where do I even begin?
Why don't I give it a try? It might be a lot to take in after you just woke up, but...let me tell you about Spiri and Chelika here.
So you're saying you're from an era hundreds of years before this one?
Yeah. I completely lost my memories, but how 'bout you? Remember anything?
...I'm afraid not.
But you're me...from centuries ago, right? Except you left your body and possessed Chelika.
That's my guess. But it might just be a coincidence that we look the same.
And a whooole lot has happened since I hopped into Chelika's body. But that's a story for another time.
(Feels weird knowing that there might be a version of me...that doesn't know who Chelika is.)
It's too bad neither Spiri can remember anything...
You called me the Maiden of Remulia, right?
Why not shorten that and call me "Rem"? It'd be kinda strange for both of us to go by the same name.
Alright. Rem it is. If you're gonna be staying in this era, I guess we'll have to find you a place to live...
Wait. You want me to stay here?
I can help you get your bearings...
I...I don't need to get my bearings!
You're gonna go find out about me and Spiri, right? To save Chelika? I should definitely go with you!
Please don't leave me here!
Oh... Sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. You're welcome to come along if you like.
Whew... Thanks.
Before we get moving, though, could I get a change of clothes? Something that doesn't show my face, preferably. I get the feeling people would stare if they saw me next to Spiri, so...
That makes sense.
Do you think Mildy might have something she can wear? We could ask her after the concert's done.
Would you mind if I told my friends about you, Rem? They know all about Spiri and Chelika already.
I don't mind, if they need to know.
Great. Then let's head to Aura Resort.
(They have a different way of traveling through time than the one I know.)
(They don't seem like bad people either...) (But it's still too risky to reveal everything to them. And I can't afford to make a losing bet.)
(I'll have to keep a close eye on the situation and play my cards carefully.)
2. Scene 2
44 linesSorry for bothering you before the concert. I know you guys are supposed to be getting ready right now.
Don't worry about it. It's taking the staff a bit longer than expected to set everything up anyway. Still, I can't believe the Maiden of Remulia is actually awake.
I'm glad she is, though, because we did want to investigate her.
She does seem a lot more...ordinary than I was expecting.
Yeah, she's a bit different than Spiri.
But she seemed to get comfortable with talking to us pretty quickly, so...there are similarities between them.
What are you going to do now?
Well, we wanna learn more about Spiri and Rem. But neither of them have any memories, so...that might be tough.
Why don't we head back to the Astral Ruins then? I think being there might help us remember.
Sorry to keep you waiting.
We looked through the clothes the staff prepared for me and managed to find something she could sneak about town in.
I appreciate it. I feel a lot better now that my face is hidden.
Now then. Why don't you show them what we found, Rem?
Have a look. It was mixed in with all the clothes.
...It looks like an ordinary handkerchief to me.
I didn't notice it myself until Rem mentioned it, but doesn't the embroidery look familiar to you?
I told Mildy it reminded me of a constellation.
Oh, yeah! It looks like a star map!
Exactly.
Okay, but does that mean it's not just an ordinary handkerchief?
This is an item from Minette Belle. The designer there knows a fair deal about archaeology. She incorporates paintings and buildings from eras past in her works, which often create quite the stir.
I heard she possesses enough documents to make even the greatest scholars jealous. Perhaps there was a star map in one of her books.
I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. A merchant from my time had an asterorb and star map too.
Then it's possible there are merchants in this era who sell them as relics.
(Or maybe Nina came through a wormhole and saw a star map with her own eyes.) (If that's the case, she probably thinks it's a dream, so she wouldn't be able to tell me exactly what happened...)
Do you want to talk to the designer?
No... I think I'd rather just try to recreate the image.
Mildy said we could do it with the Astrolabos.
And maybe we could use these thingies to help?
Are those asterorbs?!
I noticed 'em in my pocket when I came outta that coffin.
That's awful convenient, don'tcha think?
W-Well, maybe whoever put me in there thought they'd come in handy... Or something?
Whatever the case, we should be able to recreate the star map with those asterorbs.
I get the feeling they're somehow connected to who I am...
As much as we'd like to help...
We do have a show to be putting on.
And I do not think your new friend is willing to wait until it's over.
Oh...!
Yeah... I'd like to get going as soon as possible.
Could we try to get the Astrolabos moving with these asterorbs, Aldo? I need to see what happens!
Sure. But if it looks like we'll need some help, we'll come back and bring the others with us.
(I really got lucky with that handkerchief.) (Now I've got the perfect excuse to use these asterorbs.)
(There's no telling where I'll end up, but...) (I might be able to get close to where I need to be!)
3. Scene 3
6 linesIt looks the same as it did in the future...
We can use the Astrolabos to reach the room where you're sleeping, Rem. So if you're interested...
Wouldn't it just be that coffin that I was in in the future? You haven't found anything else, right?
Right...
Then I don't need to see it. I'd rather recreate the star map we saw on that handkerchief.
Alright. Then let's do that.
4. Scene 4
21 linesI still can't get over how pretty it is...
With this, I'm sure I can...
Ah...!
Rem!
Wait!
Nooooooooo! Why does this always happen to meee?!
Oww...
Is everyone okay?!
We're fine, I think... But where are we?
Y-You there! Identify yourselves!
How did you get in here?! And what was that light?
Are you here to interrupt the ritual? Y-You fiends!
Fiends?!
You don't belong here! Now prepare to face the consequences!
O guardian spirits, hear my plea! Let our covenant be sealed with gold! Defend this land with thine own flesh!
Whoa, did you see that? That monster totally heard his plea!
How did this day go from bad to worse?!
Guess I've got no choice!
Skip scene?
5. Scene 5
44 linesB-But how? How could he defeat it so easily?!
What now? That was our only guard monster! We'll need an aurcanist's help if we want reinforcements!
We didn't come here to fight you. Please, just let us explain!
Stand back, all of you. They have proven their strength. It would be pointless to start another fight. If you have something to say, I am all ears.
Lady Meryt!
Meryt? And Lovinia! What're you two doing here?
I am next in line for the throne in the Golden City. Why wouldn't I be here? You, on the other hand... I can't say I expected to see you here.
I'm really sorry we couldn't stop them.
I had no idea the two of you were acquainted. Haha... You are quite the worldly performer, aren't you, Lovinia?
Hehehe!
Meryt? What are you doing here?
I am next in line for the throne in the Golden City. Why wouldn't I be here? You, on the other hand... I can't say I expected to see you here.
I'm really sorry we couldn't stop them.
Are you a friend of Meryt's?
I'm Lovinia. I guess you could say I'm her...subordinate? Aide? Attendant? Something like that!
Haha... She is a performer.
Hehehe!
Lovinia?
I'm really sorry we couldn't stop them.
You know this man? Haha... You are quite the worldly performer, aren't you, Lovinia?
Hehehe!
What is your name?
Aldo.
I am Meryt, and I am next in line for the throne in the Golden City.
What is your name?
Aldo.
I am Meryt, and I am next in line for the throne in the Golden City.
I'm really sorry we couldn't stop them.
Are you a friend of Meryt's?
I'm Lovinia. I guess you could say I'm her...subordinate? Aide? Attendant? Something like that!
Haha... She is a performer.
Hehehe!
I apologize for that fight earlier. But I had a feeling it'd be no match for you, so I let it be. I feel the guards in this city could learn a thing or two from your style.
I apologize for that fight earlier. But I could by the way you looked at that monster that you were a seasoned adventurer. And I feel the guards in this city could learn a thing or two from the way an outsider fights.
He was so strong...
This land requires strength, and we are in dire need of it. Even if I am the only one who acknowledges it...
Huh?
So tell me, Aldo. Did you come here to interrupt the auric ritual?
The what?
Lady Meryt. We should get going. Our time here is nearly up.
Very well.
It seems like we will need to leave this space for now.
Let us take this discussion to the second floor of the Astrarium.
But there is still much more I want to ask you outsiders, including what brought you here. Let us take this discussion to the second floor of the Astrarium.
6. Scene 6
73 linesThis is Farsa. He is an aurcanist in my employ.
Greetings. I also serve as Lady Meryt's caretaker.
S-Silence! There is no need to bring up the past!
Goodness... And this is the aurcanist Maeah. He assists Farsa.
I heard the guards say that word earlier. What is it they do?
Aurcanists are practitioners of the auric arts, charms and incantations developed in this city.
We were carrying out a very important ritual back there...before you quite splendidly interrupted.
I really am sorry about that! We didn't mean to...
Hah! I'm just pulling your leg. I take it this was quite an unexpected trip for you through that...whirlpool of light.
We don't often see your kind in our demi-human city. Aside from the occasional merchant, that is. Entry from the outside is rather limited.
So you're a different species than humans... I guess that explains why your ears are different.
This land is home to all manner of demi-humans. Does that scare you?
N-No! Just the opposite! I actually think your ears are really cute and fluffy-looking. They must be so nice to pet...
Ahh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to say that out loud!
Hah. A bold statement. But I am the proud daughter of the lioness. You won't be petting these ears so easily.
In fact, not even Lovinia has had the honor!
Hehe!
(They seem a little different than the lion ears I've seen in books...) (I'd say they're more cat-like than anything.)
Now then, Aldo, tell me what brought you to the Astrarium with your companions. Unlike you, they seem...weak.
That's quite the attitude you've got there. Why not tell us about yourself first?
Oho, and suddenly you've grown a spine. Need I remind you that I'm next in line for the throne?
Ohhh no, we don't need any reminders! I'm so sorry about that! Spiri didn't mean it, honest! She was just joking! Ahaha...haa...
As was I, but...you seem like a completely different person than moments ago.
It's a long story. Let me explain...
...I see. So you came here via the Astrolabos in a different era. And you are looking into Spiri, who is the woman inhabiting Chelika's body. But as far as you know, Spiri might be the wandering consciousness of Rem, who was asleep in a mysterious chamber.
Sounds about right. But there is a chance she and I aren't the same person and just look alike.
Hey, Aldo. Judging by what Meryt said about the human king, this place must be pretty far in the past... Do you know what era it is here?
Yeah. It's about 20,000 years back from our time.
My guess is we're about 20,000 years back from our time.
Let me make one thing clear.
I wish not to hear any spoilers! And if you don't know what that is, it's simple, it's when someone "spoils" what should be a surprise!
Uhh... Okay. You sure know some interesting words.
I suppose you could say that.
In any case...you know what happens to those who reveal too much, don't you?
I...I think so.
W-We don't plan on spilling any beans. Not that I really could in my position...
My lips are sealed!
Are you trying to intimidate us, 'cause we're "weak"?
Hah! Allow me to amend my earlier statement. You aren't weak. You simply lack the physical fighting prowess that Aldo possesses. You, too, are fighting your own battles to stay alive.
Well...I guess I did come off a bit strong earlier too. Anyway, you sure you don't wanna know? You're gonna rule this place one day, so I figured you'd be curious.
I won't deny my curiosity. But still, I would rather be in the dark.
So, have you guys figured out how you're going to search for answers?
Not really... There's just so much we don't know. And honestly, I'm interested to know why the Astrolabos sent us here...
W-Well, maybe we could look for some clues around here? I mean, both Spiri and I have connections to this place...
That's true... And I wanna make sure Chelika gets treated.
By the way, Aldo...could I get those asterorbs back? I still don't know why I had 'em in the first place, but...I'd feel a lot better if I could hold on to 'em.
Huh? Oh, sure.
Thanks.
(So we're back 20,000 years from Aldo's era.) (I might be able to find the info I'm looking for here.)
Do you know anything about the water- filled chamber I was in?
I've never seen or heard of anything like it.
Oh...
Maybe those water coffins weren't built yet.
I assume that's the case. After all, only we demi-humans inhabit this land. And Rem is a human. As I mentioned, we rarely ever get those. If she were here, the guards would've had an eye on her.
But...things may change in the 20,000 years to come. Perhaps humans can come and go freely, or even live here...
I'm pretty curious about what that room looks like, then, the one I was asleep in. If we check it out, we might find something.
Unfortunately, that won't be possible. The entrance to that room has been sealed. And only the queen has the right to use the Astrolabos.
Then why don't we ask her?
It would do us no good. I don't think she'd be willing to lend a hand to strangers from another era. Above all, she is a strict woman, with both her people and family...
That isn't to say getting there is impossible. If the reigning queen won't give us permission, then I will.
But I thought you said only the queen can do that. Or is there something I'm missing here?
What?!
Lady Meryt...
I believe Aldo and his friends appearing here and now to be some sort of sign. Let us bring them into the fold.
But...
I think it's a great idea! I mean, they're not from here. They're bound to see things in a way we don't.
What did we accidentally sign up for here?
Working for me, that's what. If you do, you will be able to come and go as you please. We can discuss the details later, once you've seen it for yourself.
Seen what?
Her Majesty's kingdom, the place I will one day rule.
A demi-human paradise known as the Golden City of Remulia!
7. Scene 7
29 linesWhoa!
Surprised? As I said, this is a paradise for demi-humans, the Golden City of Remulia.
It's incredible!
Hmm...
I see a lot of people wearing hoods. Are they demi-humans too?
Indeed. The hood is a traditional garment here. Many choose only to show their faces in front of their families.
Of course, there are those who do not wear a hood or robe like myself and Lovinia. The choice is theirs to make.
I feel like there are more people going without them these days. It might be because they see Meryt going around town dressed as she is.
So, what do we have to do to make you queen and get the Astrolabos moving?
There's no need to be so hasty. I was next in line for the throne from the moment I was born.
But just because I'm her daughter, it doesn't mean the queen will simply let me ascend. I must prove that I am worthy of the position, which is why she has given me a test.
So if she passes the test...
Meryt becomes queen!
And if you lend me a hand, I will allow you to use the Astrolabos. Not a bad deal, wouldn't you say?
Are you sure about this, Your Highness? They are outsiders...
Which is precisely why I want their help. They might notice things we don't.
And, as the next queen, I want to know what outsiders think of our city. I believe change is in order. We need to take the next step. Their insight may help me find just what that means for us...
So, tell us more about the test.
A lot of people have gone missing as of late. She would have me resolve the issue in secret and bring peace back to the city.
I was just about to make my usual rounds through town and talk to the people. I would like you to join me.
That's fine with me. How about you guys?
Works for us. Right, Chelika?
Yeah.
Me too...
Then it's settled.
(I'd rather be looking into things on my own right now, but I guess this is my only option...) (I better play along so they don't get suspicious.)
I have other matters to attend to, Lady Meryt. If you'll excuse me...
8. Scene 8
21 linesOne of the people who went missing used to work at this shop.
Excuse me. Might you tell me about the girl who disappeared?
Oh, Lady Meryt. Are you going to look for her? I thought that was the job of the guards.
I decided I would help, seeing as I have some time on my hands.
Are those humans with you? How unusual... Are they merchants?
They stumbled into our fair city, but I saw promise in them. Now they work for me.
How fortuitous!
Well, let's see... That girl just stopped coming to work one day. I wanted to ask where she'd gone, but she has no relatives to speak of...
Did you notice anything different about her? Like, did she seem worried or troubled at all?
Not that I can recall... Oh, but now that you mention it, she wasn't feeling very well. She told me she saw an aurcanist, though.
Shouldn't she have gone to a doctor instead?
Sometimes an aurcanist works better, depending on what ails you.
I see...
Hey, mister! Can I see whatcha got today?
Of course. If you see anything you like, let your parents know as soon as you can. If you don't hurry, I might just run out.
Sounds like business is booming.
Yes, but mine is hardly the only one. All shops here are thriving!
Since you're here, why not take a look around? I don't mind if you just want to browse my wares.
Thanks. I might take you up on that after we find the missing girl. Let us know if you remember anything else.
O-Of course... Thank you.
Let's see what else we can find.
9. Scene 9
27 linesWhere could he be?
I have a friend I haven't seen in a while too. I'm starting to get a little worried.
It sounds like someone you know might have gone missing.
Lady Meryt. Are you checking up on the town again?
Indeed. I heard stories about people not returning home.
It's my husband, actually. Apparently he said he was going to do some shopping after work, then head home, but...well...
My friend was holed up in his house for a while, but when I went to visit, no one was home.
They'll come back, won't they, Lady Meryt? I've already talked to the guards about it.
Yes, I assure you...
An aurcanist! What perfect timing!
Hey, so I don't know where my friend's gone. Would you mind performing an auric ritual to bring him back home?
Could I ask you to do one for my husband as well?
I'm sorry to say, but I'm not an expert at finding what's been lost...but I will give it a try.
I have some other rituals to perform first, though. Would you mind if I did yours after? Someone has asked me to help cure their insomnia with the auric arts, so...
Of course. I had the same ritual done not long ago myself. I feel like I've been able to sleep soundly ever since!
That's wonderful news. Well, I must be on my way.
Phew. Now it's only a matter of time until my friend and your husband come back.
Yes! I'm so relieved.
Thank you for your concern, Lady Meryt.
...Don't mention it.
(They make it seem like this whole thing's been resolved already.)
Are there a lot of aurcanists here? Like, aside from Farsa and Maeah.
Yeah, lots of them! The people here rely on the auric arts to find missing items, get better sleep, and even make up with friends! Whether your problems are big or small, there's an aurcanist out there who can help.
Each has their own specialty and some are better at it than others. There are even aurcanists like Farsa who can perform advanced rituals that no one else can.
That's incredible.
10. Scene 10
37 linesLet's play hide-and-seek next!
No way! That game's too scary! We might wander into Dhaat! Then we'll be lost forever, just like you-know-who!
Did you say someone got lost?
Whoaaa, a human! What're you doin' here?
He works for me, and we are patrolling the town together.
His clothes are funny!
Did one of your playmates go missing?
He isn't just our playmate! He lives with us! He wasn't feeling good, so he was staying in his room...and then he was just gone.
But Mr. Diaan already talked to the guards, so he should be home soon!
You said he might be lost in Dhaat. Where is that?
It's the underworld! If you go in, you can never come back out!
Zestah! Elbrah! Mazaa! It's snack time!
Yay! Thanks, Mr. Diaan!
Lady Meryt? Ah... Did you come to investigate the missing boy?
Yes... It's quite concerning.
Y-Yes, indeed... But you need not worry too much. I'm going to consult an aurcanist, so I'm sure he'll come back safely.
I see...
Hey, did you say their names are Zestah and Mazaa?
They're quite common names in this city. I don't know the origin, but they've been around for a long time.
What's the name of the missing boy?
Brasah.
I have a friend with the exact same name!
(I guess it is the same island. It's possible the demi-humans and beastfolk lived here at the same time and shared their names...)
Mr. Diaan! What about the snaaacks?!
Be right there!
It can't be easy looking after ten little ones. Let me know if you ever need help.
I appreciate the offer. But I already have an assistant and we're always getting lots of donations, so I have all the help I need.
Ten kids...
They're all orphans who Diaan took in. There are lots of others like him in this city.
That must mean there are lots of orphans too. I'm glad someone's looking after them...
Do you know anything about that "Dhaat" place the kids mentioned?
Pay it no mind. It's nothing more than an urban legend. They say the entrance is hidden in the shadows of our city, and those who enter are never to return... If you believe that sort of thing.
But isn't it a little suspicious? If those missing people wandered into Dhaat, then...
Like I said, it's superstition. Plain and simple. This is a complex city. People warn children about "Dhaat" to keep them from wandering off.
Or at least, that's what I've heard.
I can see that.
Shall we move on?
11. Scene 11
24 linesWe've talked to a bunch of different people, but still don't have any leads.
Yeah, but at least we know more about the city now. The people here really love their auric arts.
And they have urban legends about the spooky underworld.
All their businesses are thriving too, and lots of people donate to those in need. But I find it strange how many orphans there are here...
Why is that?
W-Well, in my era, a lot of kids were orphaned because of war or famine... But I can't imagine either of those things happening here.
I see... Did anyone else notice anything?
Hmm...
I don't know if this counts, but...I just couldn't stop thinking about it. After people ask an aurcanist for something, they act like the problem's solved.
Ah...
Just how powerful are the auric arts? Can they really grant people's wishes like that?
W-Well, you see...
From your reaction, I'm getting it might be more of a placebo effect...
No, no! I think it does work! It's just whenever I see a ritual, I...
I can't help but wonder why it works.
The only ones who harbor any doubts about the auric arts in this city are Lovinia and myself. Whenever something disquieting happens, the people seek out the guards or aurcanists. That is our custom. And all incidents are resolved shortly thereafter.
You don't say... Still, I feel it's a little too soon to relax after you just asked for help.
Hah... I see I wasn't wrong to drag you into this.
Hehehe.
Aldo, I need to speak with you.
Franny is luckily nearby as well...
Lovinia, would you mind looking after Aldo's friends for a bit?
You got it. Why don't I give you a little tour over there?
Follow me, Aldo.
12. Scene 12
55 linesFranny!
Franny?
Technically her name is Fran. But I think the nickname suits her cuteness better.
(She's so different...)
Aldo. When you and your friends appeared in the Astrarium, you came through a swirling vortex of light. What if I told you...I'd been through one of those before?
You have?!
I wasn't sure I was dreaming when it happened.
But Franny and I went through the vortex and found ourselves in a completely unknown land.
We were there for but a moment, but I can still remember how shocked I was, Seeing buildings and people I'd never seen before. Encountering ways of thinking that had never crossed my mind.
That's when I realized that we need to learn more about the outside world.
I don't think that was a dream, Meryt. I think you went to a different time.
It only happened that once, so I had my doubts... But I'm heartened to hear you say that with such confidence. I've been wanting to talk about it ever since you folks showed up in the Astrarium.
I haven't told anyone else about it, not even Lovinia. I don't even know where I'd begin explaining it.
It is...complicated.
But I have divulged other secrets to her.
Like what?
There are other ways to reach the outside world that don't include passing through a mysterious vortex. As I said, entry into our city is restricted. Only certain merchants are granted permission.
So naturally, they must have a way of getting here.
...I see where this is going.
It's unexpectedly easy to sneak aboard one of their vessels. So I sometimes take a little trip out of town. I've told Lovinia about it, and she helps cover up my absence.
But you're royalty! Poor Lovinia... She's got it rough.
She's not so innocent either, you know. She was not born in this city, but raised in the outside world. She wondered if her ancestors were from here and came to investigate on her own.
In fact, the reason she became a dancer was to get close to the royal family and get some answers. Hah... Frightening, no? But when we started talking, I found that we got along quite well.
Two peas in a pod...
I picked up a new word or two while I was out there.
The more I learn about the outside world, the more restless I become. I can't help but wonder if our city can continue on like this... It makes me...uneasy.
So that's why you wanted our help.
And yours most of all. You're an adventurer with lots of experience. Let me know if you notice anything unusual.
Of course.
(Our town is so peaceful and prosperous, it's almost strange. But if something were to give way, then...)
(Am I overthinking this?)
We should regroup with Lovinia and the others.
And if you go over that way, there's a place that sells the most delicious food...
Next, I'm gonna be a winged demi-human!
Then I'm gonna be a fish demi-human!
I didn't realize there were so many different types of demi-humans around...
There aren't, at least not here. But there used to be a long time ago, according to legend. I suppose it's another urban legend, just like Dhaat. Those kids are just playing pretend.
No kidding!
Oh, Meryt! Have you finished your talk with Aldo?
Lady Meryt, I'm so glad we found you!
We met before, didn't we?
That's right. I told you my husband was missing.
And my friend too. We asked the aurcanist to perform a ritual to bring them home, but...
Unfortunately, I just noticed I don't have the tool I need to do it. We've been to several shops already, but we can't find it anywhere.
We were hoping you might be able to help since you're royalty, Lady Meryt.
What is it you need?
A shining perch.
I've heard of it before. If I'm able to get my hands on one, I will let you know.
Thank you! We'll keep checking the shops in the meantime.
I should help put their worries to rest... Could we get that perch before resuming our investigation?
Yeah, of course.
We need to go to Remulia Cavern, then. Through the Astrarium.
Gotcha. Let's head over.
13. Scene 13
8 linesThe walls are shining like stars... And you can even see a bit of the sky through the hole up there.
Yeah, it's so bright. It's almost blinding!
The item that the aurcanist needs requires a type of wood that can only be found here.
And it sounds like we'll be able to use that strange tool Farsa prepared for us here.
No problem. Leave it to me.
You certainly are helpful. We'll need 10 pieces of firm coltwood. Best of luck.
14. Scene 14
3 linesHey, Grenfaa. I was hoping you could help us make a shining perch with these materials.
Hmm... I don't think that should be a problem.
Let me know when you have everything.
15. Scene 15
15 linesI think this should be enough firm coltwood.
Actually, we will need one more type of lumber. We must gather that next. We can talk to a craftsman in town once we have it. Someone skilled enough to craft a shining perch.
Well, if it's skill we need...
I might know someone who can help. His name's Grenfaa, and he's a great craftsman who lives on this island in the future...
Ack! Sorry. I know how you feel about spoilers...
Well, there's no putting the cat back in the bag, I suppose. But if he can make the perch for us, all the better.
You have the hardwood we need. All that's left is the dye.
Yeah, we got it at Grenfaa's place. Since we have everything we need, let's go see him.
Yeah, he's really reliable. All right then, I'll head over to his place once we have all the green dye materials.
You don't want to know about the future, right? You can wait in town if that's better for you.
Hah... So considerate. In that case, I'll leave it to you, Aldo.
16. Scene 16
1 linesAlright, this should do it. I better head back to the Golden City so they can do the auric ritual.
17. Scene 17
28 linesI brought the shining perch.
Good work. Let's get it to the aurcanist.
Thank you. Now I can perform the ritual.
I will place the materials here and...
O sacred avian who guards this land! I know thy form. Come, rest your wings upon this bough and hear my plea!
Protect our lost kin and guide them home to those who await their coming!
(It feels like...nothing happened.)
I have asked your friend to return home. If he hears my words, he should come back soon.
Thank you so much!
Would you ask my husband the same?
Yes, please!
Wow... I can't believe I got to see an ancient auric ritual with my very own eyes!
Oh yeah, you like that kinda stuff, right? That must've been a real treat for you!
(But it was kinda underwhelming to me. I mean, I didn't feel any special power or a change in the air or anything.) (And it definitely didn't feel like any sacred birds landed on that branch.) (It looked like they were just putting on a performance.)
I can't wait until my husband returns. He was feeling unwell, so I feel at ease knowing he'll be home soon.
Yeah, my friend was the same. He actually holed up in his house because he wasn't feeling good.
I hope he'll return to you soon.
It's even more worrying knowing that they were both sick before they disappeared.
Lady Meryt! There you are!
Is something wrong?
The queen has requested your presence in her chambers! She asks that you bring the humans with you!
A summon from the queen?
So we've been noticed. I imagine she wants to assess whether or not you are a threat to our city.
But we don't mean you any harm!
I know. I imagine she'll dismiss the matter quickly after she's met you. She is a busy woman after all.
Now then, to the queen's chambers.
18. Scene 18
32 linesI heard you were summoned by Her Majesty. You may pass.
Do be on your best behavior.
(She seems more nervous than the rest of us.)
Your Majesty. I have brought the humans with me, as requested. They just recently joined my retinue.
(Her face is covered by a veil.) (I didn't see anyone wearing one of those in the city, but...she must have her reasons.)
......
Do they serve you well?
Indeed, they do. Their outside perspective has proven invaluable as I strive to pass the test given me.
Then I will permit it. You are dismissed.
(That was it?!)
What is this test she spoke of? This is the first I've heard of it.
Just a little errand. Nothing for you to worry about.
Ungh...
Your Majesty!
Even sitting up is painful these days...
(If only I were healthier, then she...)
Whew... That was tense. I was so nervous.
Hah. She does have that sort of air about her.
Was she wearing a veil 'cause she's queen?
No... She simply dislikes showing her face.
She's your mom, right? So how come her ears are different than yours?
She's got lion ears and you got cat ears...
(Spiri! Rude!)
I am the daughter of the lioness, the queen's child and heir to the throne!
Meryt...
I apologize. I need a moment to cool my head...
I'll go check on her. You guys stay here, okay?
Sorry about that. Guess I said too much...
19. Scene 19
30 linesI am the daughter of the lioness... I am the queen's daughter... My mother's daughter...
It seems my sweet little girl would like a hug.
Haha... Come here.
Look at that smile... I'm so happy for you, Meryt.
There's no hiding from you, is there?
Mother only smiled and hugged me once in my memory, when I was young. That is the only time I ever saw her as a parent. But once is enough for me.
Yeah...
I am the daughter of the lioness. No matter what anyone else says, that much remains true. And as her daughter, I will become a grand ruler, one that even she sees as worthy.
I know you will, Meryt. Because I see just how hard you work.
Talking to you always has a way of calming my nerves. You were the first one to understand the vague doubts I held about this city as well.
That's probably because I was raised in the outside world.
I am grateful to you for coming into my life.
At first, all I wanted was Mother's approval. But things are different now.
I want to be a queen who truly leads her people. Will you help me achieve that, Lovinia?
Of course! (She might be older than me, but I know she has her share of struggles, so I'm happy to help.)
We should head back to Aldo and the others. I need to clear the air between us.
Meryt!
I, um...I'm sorry for what Spiri said about...
Sorry to have left like that. I did not mean to raise my voice.
I'm sorry, I...
Hah... It's natural you would have your doubts. But I am the lioness's daughter. I ask you not to forget that. No further discussion, or apologies, necessary.
You got it. (This is her way of trying to make me feel better...right?)
Alright! I think it's time we got back to our investigation!
You seem even more excited about it than before...
Should we go back to asking around town?
I happened to notice something earlier. All the missing persons weren't feeling well before they disappeared. The merchant's assistant, the little boy, the husband and friend...
Yeah... Good point.
I think we should ask the concerned parties more about it.
20. Scene 20
48 linesLately, these snacks have been selling really well. I'd like to get my hands on more, but...
There's not enough to go around, is there?
Maybe we could ask an aurcanist. They might have an incantation for getting what we need.
In that case, we should try the one on the corner. He's great at helping me get things in stock.
......
Are you okay? You've been out of it all day.
Could we speak to you for a moment?
Oh! Lady Meryt!
Do you think my employee will be coming back soon? I started thinking about it more after you folks left and...I just couldn't stop worrying.
Well...
Mythan! Have you found her?!
No... Not yet.
Mythan's been a guard for a long time, so people trust him a lot.
But rest assured that it's only a matter of time until we do. We even consulted an aurcanist and plan to have them perform a ritual to find her.
So there's no need for you to worry.
Thank you! It puts my mind at ease knowing you're looking into it.
Aurcanists are great and all, but I always seek out Mythan first whenever I have a problem. I know he won't let me down.
Lady Meryt, you can let us handle the missing person cases.
I don't intend to get in your way, so let's work together to find them.
...But of course.
We should be returning to our patrol.
I feel better now... I'm sure she'll come back before long.
Might I ask you something about her? You said she consulted an aurcanist because she wasn't feeling well.
That's right. She mentioned a vase fitted with precious stones was used in the ritual.
Oh, now that you mention it, the same item was used in that missing boy's ritual. I remember because it was so unusual!
Hmm... The other missing folk who visited my shop came looking for moonlit pepperleaves. Apparently they needed it for an auric ritual, but it's not easy to come by, nor is it cheap.
It seems like a lot of those missing people visited an aurcanist before disappearing.
Should we ask them for the name of the aurcanist?
That poor merchant looks so worried about his employee... We're gonna find them all, right?
I feel like this incident is an open seam in the fabric of this city.
What do you mean?
When people have a problem, they ask an aurcanist. Then the aurcanist performs a ritual that solves their problem. That is the way of the Golden City. It's no illusion. It's our reality.
I feel like something powerful is watching over us, guiding us along like an invisible hand. It feels like it's trying to protect this city.
And this incident's making a big ol' rip in that shiny fabric, huh?
Exactly.
On any other day, this incident would already be resolved. No one would have to worry about missing family or friends...
But those merchants may have given us the thread to unravel the whole case.
Those missing people consulted an aurcanist. And that aurcanist uses a vase with precious stones and moonlit pepperleaves. And I know what connects them. Maybe better than anyone else.
You don't mean...!
Do you remember when you appeared in the Astrarium, Aldo? There were only aurcanists and a few guards present. What do you think we were doing?
Some important auric ritual, right?
Indeed, one involving those two particular items. We were trying to summon a beast that can cure illnesses even doctors can't!
That ritual requires immense skill...
Skill possessed only by the aurcanist Farsa.
But then that means...
We must speak with him. To his house!
21. Scene 21
77 linesFarsa, are you home?!
It's locked... Then we have no choice but to break the door and let ourselves in.
Are you sure about that?!
Should we wait for him here? Or go out and look for him?
Meryt! Are you okay?!
If I give it a little time, it should go away...
Is something wrong? You said you were in the Astrarium to have that ritual and cure illnesses that doctors couldn't, right?
......
This might not be the best time...
I'm fine now. Pay it no mind. We need to focus on finding those missing people first. We must search the house.
Is it really okay for us to just to do that? I mean, we don't know for sure that he's the culprit yet.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. I will permit it.
In that case...let's have a look around and see what we can find.
They were performing a ritual to heal the sick people that doctors couldn't, right? Maybe we could ask them to heal you too, Chelika.
M-Me?!
There's no harm in asking, right? And it's not like we have any other options right now.
But will it really work? Meryt and Lovinia both seem unsure about the auric arts.
Sounds like it's worked before, though. So even if it doesn't...
...No, you've got a point. We probably shouldn't be wasting our time on something we don't really understand, huh.
I just felt like...it was worth a try...
Spiri...
Farsa... Just what is he thinking?
He's looked after you for a long time, hasn't he?
He was the first ever to work for me. Whenever my health was failing me and I went to see a doctor, he always performed an auric ritual to pray for my recovery.
I had no idea.
I wasn't particularly enthused about the rituals, but Farsa insisted.
When I was a child, he couldn't stop himself from telling me how a royal should speak or act. It really got on my nerves.
Why don't you leave this area to me? I'm really good at searching bookshelves and stuff!
What's that supposed to mean?
It means what it sounds like! I'm not too shabby at looking through drawers either.
Hah...
This is my test. I cannot simply stand back and let someone else turn the place upside- down.
Meryt...
If he does turn out to be our culprit, this case can be put to rest.
Then I will become queen and punish him as I see fit.
Of course I do. This circle and these items... He was summoning the beast that heals all. Though the beast has never appeared.
Nothing appeared during the other rituals either.
Normally Farsa holds his rituals inside of his abode like this. He only performed it once in the Astrarium, that day you folks appeared. He said it might be more effective in another location.
Is that incense?
Don't get too close!
That scent is used during rituals to put the patient to sleep. It's quite effective. They say being asleep makes the ritual even more effective.
Interesting...
What else happens during these get-well-soon rituals?
"O holy beast of healing, I call upon thee who dwells beneath this land of gold! Rise now and come hither!" "I know thine true name! If thou wishest for this secret to be kept, heed my call!"
"Devour all that ails those in this gilded world!"
That is what Farsa says, at the very least.
What was that light?
Gate: Dhaat. Authentication code: Approved. Material keys: Error.
Huh?
Gate: Dhaat. Authentication code: Approved. Material keys: Error.
Material keys not confirmed. Please ensure you have the necessary items and repeat the authentication code.
But it did mention Dhaat, right?!
You mean the underworld?
So the urban legend was true?!
It said to make sure we have the necessary items...
I wonder where that voice came from... It sounded pretty futuristic.
If we get those tools and repeat the chant, something might just happen.
Are you certain?
I can't be 100% sure, but it's almost guaranteed.
Very well then. We don't have any other leads at the moment, so let's search the house again.
Aldo.
You didn't seem shocked when that voice spoke to us.
That's not true! I was surprised!
But if I did look calm, it's because I've heard a voice like that before.
In another era, perhaps?
Yeah, from the future several thousands of years ahead of us.
I see... I knew I was right to bring you.
You won't know for sure until this is all resolved.
True... In any case, we must find those items.
22. Scene 22
39 linesHm...
Hey, Meryt?
You don't need to be so nervous, Lovinia.
I apologize... I just can't help myself around you.
(Why can't I seem to calm down?) (Farsa was involved in something...unusual here. I should be mad. And yet...)
You don't need to be sorry, Meryt! I'm fine.
Why are you so forgiving?
That's a good question. You're reliable, but a bit of a handful... Maybe it's because I see you as family.
Family?
Sorry... I'm an only child. But if I had a sister, I imagine it'd feel something like this.
Not that I'm the expert or anything.
Honestly, I'd rather call you Meryt!
I...I see...
In any case, back to searching the house! (Ugh... Why am I getting so sentimental?) (If Farsa is guilty, I'm going to find out the truth and give him a good scolding. That's all there is to it!)
W-Wait a moment! If you do it like that, you'll...
Wait, Meryt, look!
Why would this be hidden behind the shelf?
Is that a broken tray?
Yes. Farsa places the item he needs for his rituals upon this tray. He used it when we tried to summon the beast that heals all. I thought it was just an ordinary tray, but it might be the missing item we need.
But it's broken...
According to his notes, he would normally throw away broken trays. However... It seems as though the mysterious energy in the cavern can repair it, although he never had time to try it himself.
A mysterious energy in the caves... Could that have something to do with the tool we used to build the treasury?
It seems we were unknowingly made to participate in his little research project...
I see this as a fine opportunity to try and repair this broken tray. Wouldn't you agree, Aldo?
Why are you asking me?
Because you know a craftsman who can help us. We'll need both crystal and wind relements as well as colt sap, if his notes are to be believed.
Sure you don't wanna come with us, Meryt?
I still have no desire to see the future myself. Good luck, Aldo.
Are you really sure you don't want to go?
As of right now...yes.
(I wouldn't mind seeing other places in the future, but seeing what becomes of the Golden City scares me...) (Whether what awaits us is good or bad, I won't be able to stop thinking about it.) (And what if, by some chance, it makes me less inclined to lead my people?) (I don't know that my heart could handle it...)
Meryt sure was upset back there.
Yeah. She sounded pretty sad too.
But whatever the case, we hafta fix that tray!
Right. Meryt said we needed crystal and wind relements and colt sap, right? Let's get whatever we need in the Remulia Cavern, then go ask Grenfaa if he can repair it.
23. Scene 23
3 linesHmm... So you want to repair this tray, yes? It's a fascinating piece. It doesn't look like any old metal plate. Judging by the cross section, there are small parts inside. It should be easy to just put the pieces back together, but...
We want you to use crystal and wind relements and colt sap to fix it.
Alright, I'll give it a try. Let me know once you have everything.
24. Scene 24
3 linesIt's finished.
Thanks, Grenfaa!
(I know Meryt's the one who wanted us to try this, but...) (I can't imagine how she'll react to hearing the result.)
25. Scene 25
19 linesIt looks like everything went well, just as Farsa predicted.
Is there something you wish to say to me?
Well...I guess I was wondering if you're mad. Or...maybe sad?
No way... You said the quiet part out loud...
Apparently you're not supposed to say that, Aldo.
Spiri...! But I guess I shouldn't have pointed it out either...
Of course I'm upset! One of my subordinates is up to something, and he even used me in the process!
I won't be satisfied until I give him a piece of my mind!
Come! Bring that tray and I shall recite those words once more!
We put the item atop the tray. And now...
"O holy beast of healing, I call upon thee who dwells beneath this land of gold! Rise now and come hither!" "I know thine true name! If thou wishest for this secret to be kept, heed my call!" "Devour all that ails those in this gilded world!"
There's that light again!
Gate: Dhaat. Authentication code: Approved. Material keys... Rescanning.
Gate: Dhaat. Authentication code: Approved. Material keys... Confirmed. Entry authorized.
What IS this?!
