Chapter 2: Little Big Ambition
13 scenes, 769 lines
1. New Team, New World
59 linesAll alone, deep in the mountains, there lived a little witch.
She had trouble finding a use for her magic. "Why do I have these powers?" she wondered.
One night, she opened a picture book about the outside world and read it by the moonlight.
Within its pages lay a whole wide world, where many people lived in happiness.
"They're having so much fun. I want to go there too."
The witch's little heart fluttered with excitement. She longed to see the world outside.
She began to think that if she used her magic, maybe she could make it into an even happier place.
Night came to an end, and the morning sun rose to shine down on the outside world.
The witch made a wish to bring happiness to all, and took a step toward the world outside.
A few days after Mejiro McQueen wins her second consecutive spring Tenno Sho...
Practice with Team Sirius is getting more and more heated.
Yes! Another personal best!
The energy on the track is palpable, as the racers push each other beyond their limits.
I've never seen a more focused team.
Pant, pant...
And at the center of it all is McQueen, with her majestic running on full display.
Damn, McQueen, I dunno how you do it. Practically ran a marathon, but your pace and form are still impeccable.
I bet there's not an Umamusume alive who could beat her in a long-distance race.
She's not wrong. You'd be hard pressed to find a stayer who could go toe-to-toe with McQueen.
But a certain someone does catch my eye...
Pant, pant...
Rice Shower, our newest member. Unable to perform well and stressed out because of it, she joined us in rough shape.
Hoo boy, Rice is all outta juice. Just look at that chin tilting up.
Truth is, she can't compare to McQueen. Not yet at least. But what I see is...
A deadly gaze fixed on the target running in front of her.
I see a fighting spirit not even the harshest headwind can snuff out.
And more than anything...
Pant, pant...
No... not yet... Come on, almost there...
Didn't expect her to stay on my tail quite this long. But no matter.
...Ah!
Pant, pant...
Huff... puff...
And she does it again! Look at you, setting record times left and right!
Wow! Just, wow!
That's our Tenno Sho champion! That's our ace! Isn't that right, Trainer?
Yep. Our team superstar.
P-please, there's no need for such flattery.
Solid running from Rice, too.
Pant, pant... Wait, m-me?
You looked about ready to pass out, but you hung on till the end.
But... if my running really is "solid," then why can I never win a race?
In the Satsuki Sho, and in my last race too, I tried so hard only to end up in eighth.
Yeah but c'mon, you had McQueen right in front of you until those last fifty meters. That's impressive.
But... I don't know...
What you need is confidence. The first step is convincing yourself that you can run.
And, after running alongside you, I can say with confidence that there is one other thing you require.
I am referring to distance.
D-distance?
That's right. With your short and slender frame, plus those legs...
You're a natural stayer, no question about it.
I'm a stayer? The same as McQueen...
Yep. A longer distance will bring out your potential. Something longer than your previous races, at least.
Actually, there's a 2,400-meter coming up. Though the competition might be a bit... well, it will be tough.
Expressions grow serious as the others realize what I'm getting at.
The race is a special one for any runner. A once-in-a-lifetime chance to stand at the top.
Your next stop will be the Japanese Derby!
Th-the Derby?!
Her cry of disbelief lingers in the air. But despite how she may be feeling about her future right now, it's looking bright and sunny to me.
2. Follow the Leader
67 linesRight, I think that's enough for today's... Hm?
Something wrong?
No, but it seems we have a spectator.
...Ah!
An acquaintance of yours, I presume?
Nope. But if I remember correctly...
Phew. Another honest day's work! And now, the event we've all been waiting for, Roll the McQueen!
I beg your pardon?! What a dreadful-sounding name! Whatever it is, we are not doing it!
Hey! Come back here!
...
I didn't know her, but I had seen her around. She was always the last one out practicing.
Pant, pant...
And there she was, running and running, all by herself.
Pant, pant... Ah!
Thud!
It was like watching McQueen all over again, training for the Tenno Sho as if her life depended on it.
You okay?
Huh? Oh... You're McQueen's trainer...
You shouldn't run through the pain. Not if you want to win your next race.
It sucks you can't do more now, I know. But just hold on to that feeling, and it'll take you to the winner's circle.
Sniffle... Sob...
Whoa, uh... Didn't think you hurt yourself that badly.
N-no, sorry, it's... it's just...
I love running... but I just can't seem to win. And when I see McQueen race...
I... I want to win too!
"I want to win." It's easy to say those words once. But to Rice Shower, they were a mantra.
Me? In the Derby...
I know you can do it. I've watched you run more than anyone.
B-but... I'm just not at that level.
I can't blame her for being intimidated. The Derby draws the fiercest contenders around.
Still, Rice has the legs to keep up with McQueen. And more importantly...
You still want to win, don't you?
Ah...
That ambition is what leads to hard work. And hard work is what leads to confidence.
So what do you say? The Derby calls!
...O-okay. I'll give it a try.
It took a little prodding, but she's taken her first step towards the wide world that awaits her.
So all I have to do is follow McQueen?
Yep. Just follow the leader, no matter what.
Out of all the contenders for this year's Derby, there's one clear favorite: the undefeated Mihono Bourbon.
She takes the lead and sets a precise pace, rather like a machine. It's truly a sight to behold.
If you're to best her, you'll first need to be able to keep up with me.
...Okay. I'll try my best not to fall behind.
It's not easy, keeping the perfect stalking distance. It demands both stamina and focus, especially against someone like McQueen.
Rice gets off to a rough start, falling behind time and time again, but she keeps at it. And after a few days...
Pant, pant...
Huff... Puff...
Hey, look at that! You didn't fall behind a single time today!
Well done. That stamina will serve you well.
Just like that! That's how you're gonna win the Derby!
Y-yeah!
Well then, farewell to you all.
Smell ya later!
See you tomorrow!
Just keep following, just keep following...
Just keep following, just keep following...
Sigh...
Just keep following, just keep following...
...Erm, Rice.
Hweh?
Do you mean to sleep beside me again? I'm not sure following me everywhere I go will benefit you...
B-but Trainer said to follow you, no matter what.
(...This is most definitely not what Trainer had in mind.)
After several days of relentless training, the highlight of the Twinkle Series, the Japanese Derby, is finally here.
3. Land of Dreams
62 linesMihono Bourbon has opened a four-length lead! And it looks like she's going to keep it!
Bourbon leads! 2,400 meters can't stop her from going gate to wire! Six for six! The undefeated Double Crown is hers!
Rice finishes the Japanese Derby in second. She may have failed to overtake Mihono Bourbon, but it's huge progress nonetheless.
A few days later, I take the team to an amusement park in Chiba.
Whoa! We're here, the amusement park of dreams! With the princess's castle, and Big Lightning Mountain!
I thought it'd be nice to treat her to the theme park she's always wanted to go to, but, well...
Wait... There's no one else here. It's like our very own kingdom. Hehe. That sounds nice. โช
Trainer... Rice here truly believes this is the place she's been so keen on visiting...
McQueen whispers into my ear as an oblivious Rice Shower beams with excitement.
I know money's tight this month, but did you really have to bring her to this amusement park?
Yeahhh...
C'mon, McQueen! Rumor has it there's a mystery attraction underground. We gotta uncover the truth!
H-hey! That door is for employees only!
Let's get going too, Trainer! โช
Y-yeah, all right.
They say time flies when you're having fun, so I guess that means we had fun, location notwithstanding.
We got to go on almost every ride. Good thing there weren't many people today.
Every time she expresses genuine joy at being here, I feel a little pang of guilt.
Hey, um... Trainer?
I want to end the day by going on the ferris wheel. So, um... would you join me?
Oh no, she's too pure, my heart can't take it... If she wants to ride the ferris wheel, then the ferris wheel it is.
Of course.
Hehe... Yay!
The city rolls on and on as far as the eye can see, dyed orange by the setting sun.
...
...But the breathtaking sight is lost on Rice Shower. Something's been bugging her ever since we got on.
What's up?
Oh, um... It's just...
I wanted to say thank you. For everything. I really didn't think I'd be able to achieve so much.
I mean, I still can't believe that I got second place in the Derby.
All thanks to your hard work.
Hehe...
...So, that got me thinking. I'm happy with second place, but... what if I could be first?
I... I want to win. Against Mihono Bourbon.
I want to win.
Her ambition has only grown and grown, just as the gap between her and her undefeated rival has shrunk.
Wanting to win against someone like this, I couldn't have done it without you. So I had to let you know.
Ohh, now that I say it out loud, it's kind of embarrassing...
Must be your newfound confidence talking. Next race, you're taking first. We'll beat Bourbon together.
Together... Yeah, we can do it!
Whew! Never been so amused in my life! What about you, Rice?
Yeah, it was like a land of dreams. I had so much fun. โช
Trainer, thanks for the treat today. I'll keep up the hard work!
And I'll be right by your side.
Looks like someone had a magical time. I suppose you were right to bring her here.
...But do make sure your next treat is a bit more proper.
I-I'll do my best.
The following day, Rice dives back into training with renewed vigor.
Pant, pant...
Just keep following, just keep following...
Ooh! She's hanging in there!
McQueen keeps upping the pace, but Rice isn't falling behind.
That's what happens when you set a clear goal for yourself. It helps bring out the best in you.
Especially so in her case, it looks like.
By a clear goal, you mean McQueen? Or Mihono Bourbon?
Not just them. When Rice sets her mind to something, she never gives up on it, no matter what it is.
Uh-huh. I gotchu.
At this rate, she'll be able to give her best performance yet in her rematch with Bourbon.
The training will do some good for McQueen too, who has the Takarazuka Kinen coming up.
Rice seems to be lifting the entire team higher. But sometimes, reality drags you back down.
McQueen?!
Her desperate cry echoes across the track...
4. Proof of Ambition
47 lines...Gosh, I've really done it this time.
McQueen's injury seems to be more serious than I thought.
How's it feel?
I'll be getting a proper diagnosis soon, but it seems I'll have to give up on the Takarazuka Kinen.
McQueen...
No need to look so glum. It's unfortunate, but I still have my third consecutive win in the Tenno Sho to work toward.
The race means a lot to me, and if I'm to accomplish this feat, I must focus on recovery above all.
This does mean I'll be unable to train with you, but I'm sure the other team members will fill my place.
Y-yeah...
Our trainer, your teammates, myself included, we all have high hopes for you.
So please, show us a race that will light a fire in our hearts.
Okay... I'll run with everything I have.
Hehe. Anyhow, I'll be fine with just Trainer here. Rice, you'd best get back to your training.
Yeah. I'll check in on you again later.
She heads out with determination written on her face. Perhaps she was roused by McQueen's words.
...Seeing her now, I sense a mysterious power. One that will pull us all forward.
She's right. Having such a hard worker in their midst has done wonders for the rest of the team.
Guess that means you can focus on getting better.
Indeed. I'll need to work just as hard as her if I'm to make a full recovery.
Filling the hole left by McQueen's absence brings the entire team together in helping Rice train.
Pant, pant...
Just keep following, just keep following...
Okay Rice, start following me now.
Got it. Follow the leader.
Pant, pant... Rice is so good at this.
Hard at work, I see. Looks like her training is a boon to the entire team.
You can say that again. My legs are shaking like a newborn goat's.
Hey, now that you can't exercise, you better watch that weight. I saw those extra helpings of dessert yesterday.
Y-you saw that?! Blame the pudding for being excessively flavorsome! I've done nothing wrong!
Desserts aside, Rice is really coming into form.
Thanks to you and the others. Y'all being there pushes her to work harder.
If anything, seeing her work so hard gives me strength.
Hehe. Welp, I'm gonna go run my heart out. Go lie down or something!
Hey! ...Ugh, she's just rubbing it in because she knows how much I'm itching to run again.
With everyone working together, training proceeds smoothly.
Ooh... I'm so nervous...
Heh. Learn to revel in this feeling, nerves and all.
Rice, you've got this! Just think of all the training we did!
Y-yeah... I worked hard for this. I'm going to have fun, and...
And get my win against Mihono Bourbon.
Yeah! That's what I like to hear!
We'll be cheering for you!
Thanks. Okay, well, here goes!
Get behind Bourbon, and don't let her get away!
Got it! Follow the leader!
I want to win. She last spoke those words to me back on the ferris wheel.
Now it's time for her to prove how much she really wants it.
5. Expectations and Excitement
54 linesWith a seventh victory added to her flawless record, all eyes are on Mihono Bourbon, if they weren't already.
As far as the media's concerned, she's practically already won the Triple Crown.
Mihono Bourbon! Please, shake my hand!
I'd give anything for your autograph!
Same here! I'll take a big ol' ketchup signature on this omelet rice, and make it cutesy!
Very well. I'm not sure I understand the last part of your request, but I'll do my best.
Cutesy... cutesy...
Ooh, that's it! Give it some steez!
Ding dong
Mihono Bourbon, the student council president would like to see you. Please report to her office.
President Rudolf?
Knock, knock
Come in.
Excuse me. You called, President Rudolf?
Yes. We've had a veritable flood of interview requests for you. I was hoping you'd acquiesce.
It's no wonder, what with the undefeated Triple Crown right before your eyes. Expectations are high.
But those expectations... Do you not feel undue pressure from them?
No. Even if I did feel pressure, I would simply convert it to strength.
Good. Spoken like one who is prepared for greatness.
The Triple Crown requires much mental fortitude to wear. I would see you run as your usual self.
I will.
...However, I am cognizant of the fact that achieving the Triple Crown will be no easy task.
Rice Shower... With each victory over her, I seem to only grow more aware of this.
I see. You mean to say she is your... Ah, but what use is it putting it into words?
My position does not allow me to play favorites, but I do hope to see a satisfying end to this year's Classics.
If I can be of help, I shall gladly answer.
When giving an autograph, how might one make it more "cutesy"?
...I'm afraid that goes beyond my area of expertise.
In my office, before practice.
Check it out! Guess who got Bourbon's autograph?
On omelet rice, of all things?
...The letters are cute.
This is for you, Rice! I know you pack a bigger appetite than you let on! Dig in!
Hweh?! You're not supposed to tell people that!
Is it just me, or is everybody talking about Bourbon?
Given her undefeated record, it's only natural. You can't help but wonder just how far she'll go.
We've nothing to fear. Rice's abilities rival hers, and that speaks for itself.
The shrinking gap between them with each race is proof of that.
Though Rice lost to Bourbon yet again in her most recent race, it was closer than in the Derby.
Plus, her ambition is now fully focused on winning against her rival.
The Kikuka Sho is all yours!
...Yeah.
Oh? Look at you, oozing with confidence!
It's because training so much with you all has made me into a stronger runner.
I just can't wait to run against her again. It's all I can think about.
She's learned to feel excited about races instead of anxious. That's how you know she's grown.
Seeing real progress in her repeated runs against Bourbon must have given her confidence.
All right! Let's kick off today's training! First up, three laps around the island of Shikoku!
That's easily over 3,000 kilometers!
Trainer, I'll do my best.
Make us proud, Rice.
Even as expectations for her rival pile high, Rice Shower's fighting spirit burns all the brighter.
6. In the Cyborg's Shadow
44 linesAnd here's undefeated Triple Crown hopeful Mihono Bourbon, making her appearance at Kyoto Racecourse!
Cheers!
Mihono Bourbon! Show us the birth of a Triple Crown legend!
We believe in you!
Rice Shower versus Mihono Bourbon. This Kikuka Sho will settle their rivalry once and for all.
Just keep following Bourbon... Just keep following... Just follow, and then...
Rice Shower... I see you already have me marked.
No matter. I will be first across the finish.
...Not today. I won't lose again.
Rice! You got this!
The Kikuka Sho. 3,000 meters on turf. Long distance is Rice's strength, which means she has a chance, right?
Yeah, but there's no way Bourbon doesn't have something up her sleeve.
Hey Trainer, what'd you tell Rice?
I told her to keep following Bourbon, then pass her.
Uh-huh... Wait, that's it?!
Hard to find fault with that advice. Her ability to stalk a leader is second to none.
...If anything, I'm less concerned about if she can beat Bourbon, and more about how the crowd will...
Cheers!
McQueen is cut off by another tidal wave of cheers. It's almost time.
The crowning glory of the Classics is on the line here in the Kikuka Sho. And it all starts now!
...Rice Shower.
Ah... Bourbon...
So this is what defeat feels like.
...Huh?
Frustration at failing to complete one's task. And there is another emotion too, one that burns...
...Rice Shower, this victory is yours.
I... I won?
You ran tremendously.
Next time, I'll be a more formidable opponent. I hope to race you again, Rice Shower.
Aww yeah, that's our Rice! She really brought back the W!
She did! We couldn't have hoped for more!
Look, she's coming to the stands! Let's all call out to her! On three...
I dunno, this is kinda disappointing.
...Huh?
Yeah. Here I was thinking I'd get to see the birth of an undefeated Triple Crown legend.
There are more than just a couple of comments like that. We were just too busy celebrating to notice until now.
So this is what McQueen meant...
My true concern was what would happen should she deny the Triple Crown so many were hoping to see.
The ambivalent mood enveloping the racecourse seems to stifle our cries of joy.
7. A Long Concert
67 linesAt long last, the witch had found her way to the world outside.
Everywhere she looked, she saw sights she had never seen before, sights filled with wonder.
If I could use my magic in this beautiful world, how joyous it would be! Her heart leapt with excitement.
She told the people of the world outside, "I'll use my magic to make your wishes come true."
But when she began to cast a spell, the people all ran away from her.
The people of the world outside saw magic as a terrifying force.
They feared that magic might change the way of the world, the one they knew so well.
The witch said to them, "I want to use my magic to make everyone happy."
To prove she meant it, she used magic to fly up into the sky. "See? With this, you can go wherever you like."
But the people only grew more afraid, and began to shun the witch.
Now she was all alone in the world outside.
"Why do I have these powers?" she wondered once more.
Onstage for her winning concert following the Kikuka Sho, Rice Shower's reception is less than stellar.
The crowd greets her with harsh stares and harsher words for denying Mihono Bourbon's Triple Crown.
I came here to watch Mihono Bourbon win!
Man, I wanted to see Mihono Bourbon at center stage.
Not a single voice can be heard praising today's victor.
What are they... But Rice won...
Screw it, Imma shut 'em up myself!
No, you will not. Just leave it be. Many were eager to see Bourbon achieve the Triple Crown.
But c'mon...
As boos echo across the stadium, McQueen sends a wholehearted cheer to the stage.
If no one else wants to sing Rice Shower's praises, then it's up to us to do so, as her teammates.
Rice! Congratulations!
As I let loose a cheer of my own, a balloon floats up into the air, with a banner drooping down from it.
Hey, what's the deal with that?! It says "Congrats on the Triple Crown"!
Someone must've let go of it by mistake. But the damage is already done.
Up on stage, Rice's voice shrinks to a quivering whine. I've never been to a winning concert that felt so long.
...
Aw, don't look so sad! You finally got your big win!
That's right! Let's have Trainer take us to the amusement park again!
Yeah, the actual famous one this time!
She walks out of the room, with her head hanging low.
...Looks like it really got to her.
Defeating the undefeated Mihono Bourbon was a big achievement, but one that fans couldn't accept.
I knew there'd be some backlash, but not this much.
One can hardly blame her. To work so hard, only to be rewarded like that...
Nevertheless, she must find a way to overcome this.
Such is the duty of a victor... of one who runs with the hopes of so many on her shoulders.
The duty of one who runs with the hopes of many on her shoulders...
In the moment, I'm not sure if I fully understand what she means.
A few days later...
Huff... puff...
A full second behind McQueen. Not in the groove today either, huh.
Y-yeah... Sorry.
McQueen hasn't made a full recovery yet, but she's starting to train again.
Even with the advantage, though, Rice is struggling to keep up.
Meh, we could all do better. McQueen's scrambling to rein in her cravings now that she's running again.
Am not! Could you not make things up?
A third consecutive win in the Tenno Sho is on the line for me. I've much training to make up for.
...
Rice, let's give it another go. In my current state, you ought to be able to pass me.
...Okay, I'll try my best.
They run a few more laps, but she's never able to overtake McQueen.
Later in the day...
Knock, knock
Trainer, if I may.
McQueen pays a surprise late-night visit to my office, her face more stern than usual.
Oh, hey. Need anything?
Yes, I've a favor to ask you with regards to the Tenno Sho.
Her expression tells me this is going to be serious. And with dead silence replacing the room's usual cheer, I start to feel almost nervous.
The spring Tenno Sho that my third win depends on...
I'd like you to let Rice race in it too.
8. Lingering Pain
58 linesThe spring Tenno Sho that my third win depends on, I'd like Rice there too.
Rice... in the Tenno Sho?
Why risk her chance to make history by letting another strong contender onto the field?
The booing at the Kikuka Sho...
Denying Bourbon's Triple Crown was a feat worthy of praise, and yet the exact opposite reactions were the loudest.
As chance would have it, the stakes at the Kikuka Sho are closely mirrored by the upcoming Tenno Sho.
So you want Rice to run because...
Because there's a certain sight I would have her see there.
Some things can only be taught by a fellow runner, and I wish to take on that responsibility.
You, Trainer, have your own part to play, getting Rice into the Tenno Sho.
The importance of this race for McQueen cannot be understated.
No doubt she thought long and hard before making this request.
But is she really okay with this? Won't Rice being there distract her from her own running?
You might not get another shot at three consecutive wins. Are you sure about this?
Heh. You think I'm going to lose, do you? I am very hurt.
For the record, I have no intention of losing. On my pride as a Mejiro, I shall achieve my third consecutive Tenno Sho title.
You sure have a difficult job before you. No matter which of us wins, you'll have to console the other.
She flashes a teasing smile, but the upcoming race is anything but fun and games to her.
If this sight she wants Rice to see is that important to her, then who am I to say no?
All right, I'll have Rice run too.
Good. I trust you'll keep your word.
At training the following day...
Pant, pant... Um, how was my time?
Her times aren't bad. But when she practices against anyone, she just can't win.
Getting booed at the Kikuka Sho has made her shy away from being competitive.
Good. You'll be able to contend in the big leagues.
The big leagues? Have you decided my next race?
She won't like the decision. But if she's to ever win again...
You'll be running in the spring Tenno Sho.
...What? The spring Tenno Sho?!
You have what it takes. You proved that at the Kikuka Sho.
B-but... McQueen has her third consecutive Tenno Sho riding on that race...
It's so important to her, I can't compete. Even if I win, I'll just...
Rice Shower hangs her head as if she can hear the boos again.
Practice ends without her agreeing to the race.
I won't force her to race if she doesn't want to, but this can't go on forever.
You're Rice's trainer?
Mihono Bourbon interrupts her training to talk to me.
Hey, Bourbon. Training all by yourself?
Yes. An injury I sustained after the Kikuka Sho has finally healed.
How is Rice doing? Is she still hung up on what happened?
Bourbon was up on that stage too, right beside Rice.
She saw firsthand how much damage the booing did.
She's... not quite back to her usual self.
I see...
...I train after-hours like this not because of some directive to achieve victory, but because I want to.
I simply can't stifle the urge to run. And it all started when I lost to Rice.
I want to race her again, and I want to win this time. That is why I train.
Rice was the first ever to put a scratch on Bourbon's undefeated record.
Sounds like she's converted that setback into motivation.
Rice was exactly the same way. Having a rival pushed her to work harder.
...Is there anything I can do? In order to meet her on the turf once more.
Bourbon...
"I want to win." The same ambition that Rice has lost, Bourbon has gained anew.
If Rice could see Bourbon now...
Yeah, I could use your help.
Understood. I'll do as you wish, I mean, it is my wish to help.
Noticing the semblance of a smile on Bourbon's lips, I can't help but feel like things are looking up.
9. The Drive to Win
71 linesDuring training...
Hello. I hope you don't mind.
Ehh?! B-Bourbon?!
She's going to be your training partner.
Just for today, we are teammates. If you'll have me.
Umm...
Rice, the training I'm accustomed to is, according to others, "demonic".
But seeing as you've defeated me before, you should be able to keep up. Let's make today worth it.
Hwehh!
No, not "hweh." Now then, let us begin. First up, four uphill dashes.
O-okay!
Rice takes off running as if being hounded by Bourbon.
...Well, I'd better get to it myself. The Tenno Sho is nearly upon us.
I simply cannot wait to run alongside Rice. Aren't you excited too, Trainer?
McQueen looks at me with a wry smile.
I take that to mean I'd better convince Rice to compete.
She'll run. I'll make sure of it.
Yes, I trust that you will.
Whoa, say what? Rice is gonna be in the Tenno Sho too?! Oh boy, I gotta get the word out!
H-hey, what are you? Wait just a minute! This isn't supposed to be public yet!
Our special training session gets off to a lively start.
Pant, pant...
As I expected, you've kept up with my "demonic" training. And now for the final exercise.
...Rice, I want you to race me.
Huh? ...Race you?
You bested me in the Kikuka Sho. It shouldn't be an unreasonable task.
But, but I...
Having seen such a powerful performance from you, I find your timidness rather unexpected.
In the Kikuka Sho, you had me in your sights from the start, and never let me escape for even a second.
You worked hard to beat me, and your running showed it.
...
And now, I am working hard in order to beat you.
However... In your current state, I won't actually need to work hard at all to win.
I don't want that. The Rice I know isn't someone I could best without putting in the work.
Bourbon...
Want... to win...
I love running... but I just can't seem to win. And when I see McQueen race...
I... I want to win too!
...That's right. That's the whole reason why I switched teams, why I trained so hard...
Even if some people don't like it when I win, I... I want...
I want to win!
I see you've finally found your drive again. Well then, let's finish our training.
Okay!
Oh? Rice and Bourbon are going at it!
Rice is keeping her eyes forward now.
She remembered why she wants to win, who she wants to win against.
Indeed.
All right, I'm gonna go be their ref!
Pant, pant...
(She's so fast! Faster than in the Kikuka Sho...)
(She trained hard... because she wanted to win against me.)
(The crowd refused to recognize me, but she did.)
(And I can't let her down!)
Yahhh!
I see that same ambition she exuded in the Kikuka Sho. The drive to win pushes her forward.
There it is! Rice Shower wins!
Pant, pant... Phew.
Bourbon... I did it... I remembered what it was like to want to win against you.
And I was able to see your running firsthand again. It seems I have much more training to do.
Our next meeting will be in the Twinkle Series... as unparalleled rivals.
Yeah... Yeah!
Trainer, I, um... I'll run in the Tenno Sho!
I want to win. Even if it's an important race for McQueen!
Heh. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Then we'd better get training, yeah?
Yes!
Rice has decided to rise to the challenge once more. The Tenno Sho awaits.
10. Pure Determination
53 linesIt's Rice Shower! Rice Shower did not back down! An excellent finish in first!
With the Tenno Sho right around the corner, Rice runs like her old self again at the Nikkei Sho.
And as if galvanized by that performance, McQueen takes the Osaka Hai in course-record time.
They've both been training harder than ever, pushing each other to greater heights.
And before long, the day of the Tenno Sho arrives.
In bracket two, post three, it's the sable stayer who denied Mihono Bourbon her Triple Crown, Rice Shower!
Just follow McQueen... Just keep following...
Unfazed by the huge crowd before her, Rice fixes her gaze on McQueen.
She wants to win against her rival more than anything else. Her eyes are telling me so.
Meanwhile, the crowd favorite is, of course...
In bracket eight, post fourteen, today's favorite with a third straight spring Tenno Sho on the line, it's the queen herself, Mejiro McQueen!
Wooo!
The loudest fanfare of the day resounds for her, but McQueen doesn't seem to hear.
Like her rival, she's focused on one thing, and one thing only, victory.
The crowd's excited to see you.
Oh, Trainer. Shouldn't you be going to check up on Rice?
I'm your trainer too, you know.
Heh. And I'm lucky to have such an exemplary one. But please, go see how she's doing.
After all that training, I'm sure she's built up enough confidence, but she must still be feeling anxious.
I'm lucky to have such an exemplary ace on my team. Always looking out for others, even a rival.
For now, yes. Out on the turf, I can't make any guarantees.
I will put everything I have into this race. No holding back.
The crowd are hoping to witness the birth of a three-time Tenno Sho champion. And their hopes give me strength.
I will be the first to cross that finish line.
I can't detect a single trace of hesitation in her eyes. She means every word.
Well, you can add my hopes in there as well.
Of course. I won't disappoint.
After speaking with McQueen, I jog ahead to Rice Shower.
Oh, Trainer...
Nervous? The trick is to write "Umamusume" on your palm and swallow the word three times.
Heheheh. I've never heard that before.
I'm not that nervous, actually. It's just... I'm a bit scared.
So many people are rooting for McQueen. I know how much they want to see her third Tenno Sho win.
If I win, they'll all be disappointed. They'll be angry with me for getting in the way.
The fact you're worried about that tells me you're here to win.
...Yeah. I still want to win.
Her expression reminds me of McQueen just now. Pure determination.
You know, it was McQueen who suggested I have you race in the Tenno Sho.
McQueen?
Apparently, she wants to show you something, a sight only a fellow runner can see.
Now go get that win!
Mm. I will, Trainer.
They're lining up in the gate. The spring Tenno Sho, who will the glory go to?
Just follow McQueen... Keep following... Just follow McQueen... Keep following...
Oh, and here's the favorite, three-time hopeful Mejiro McQueen showing hesitation before the gate.
There we go, Mejiro McQueen is in the gate.
The spring Tenno Sho. Glory is 3,200 meters away. And... they're off!
11. A Victor's Duty
61 linesMurmur, murmur...
I really wanted McQueen to win today...
I've been camping on this spot for a whole week just to see her get her third win with my own eyes.
...
Rice...
Eheheh... They're all disappointed.
I heard there was a sight you wanted me to see, but all I see is a repeat of the Kikuka Sho...
I mean, I knew this would happen, but... still, it... it hurts.
...When I was disqualified in the autumn Tenno Sho, I felt much the same way.
Knowing I'd betrayed the hopes of so many, I found it difficult to carry on.
But then, I saw it, the sight I speak of.
The sight...
I'm sure you'll see it too. Come on, now. We're up.
Huh? ...Ah!
Murmur, murmur...
Look, it's Rice Shower! Why'd you have to deny her third win, huh?!
We came here to see McQueen win!
Dammit, we gotta drown them out! Good going, Rice! You're the best!
Congratulations, Rice!
You... you ran well.
Ayy! You get it! Now gimme one more, in a voice she can hear this time!
Huh?! O-okay! You ran well!
There are people cheering... for me.
And this is the sight only a victor can see.
Those who placed their hopes in you, those who had their hopes dashed... Standing here, you can see all their faces.
To take all those emotions in, the good and the bad, is the duty of a victor, and also her pride.
A victor's duty... and pride...
For the fans who put even the slightest of hopes in you... And for the fans who hoped against you... For all their sakes, stand tall.
Now, time to show them what a true victor looks like.
...Okay!
All the people disappointed that I won, they'll be even more disappointed if I don't look like I belong up here.
I need to stand tall, look them all in the eye, and show them that I'll keep on running...
Until one day, I become an Umamusume they'll be happy to see win!
I have high hopes for you, Rice.
The concert begins, marking not only Rice's victory but also McQueen's crushing defeat.
And yet, Rice sings with far more spirit than she did after the Kikuka Sho.
McQueen, you did well out there.
I could tell from her singing.
Gosh, what a disgrace for me though. I was the one who asked you to enter her in the race, and here I am defeated.
She really did... perform wonderfully.
She's not exaggerating. Rice ran better than I've ever seen her run.
But the same goes for McQueen. I could feel how much she wanted her third title.
...You put up a brilliant fight.
She ran with a lot on her shoulders today. The weight of her ambition. Her duties as team ace. And I have nothing but gratitude for her efforts.
Rice Shower must see that too.
The witch had nobody to turn to. But one day, a boy came to visit her.
"I want to soar across the sky like a bird."
The witch gladly cast a spell on the boy, and he smiled, for his wish had come true. "Wow! This is incredible!"
After seeing that, the others started to visit the witch too.
Some were still scared, but day by day, more and more people began to smile.
The witch wanted to make everyone happy, so she cast spell after spell, sparing none of her power.
But one day, she suddenly became unable to use magic.
Using so much had tired her out, and she collapsed from exhaustion.
Everyone who had once feared the witch then realized how hard she had worked to make them happy.
Now that they knew her true feelings, they began to care for her.
They all eagerly awaited the day she would become healthy enough to use magic again.
12. Slump
50 linesWhat?! You're leaving the team?!
Only temporarily, mind you. I've some urgent family matters to attend to.
Waaah! With you gone, who am I gonna mess with for fun?!
How about you don't mess with anybody for once?!
It'll feel lonely with you gone...
Yeah... You're our ace...
McQueen, come back soon, okay?
Of course. I'm not done running yet. I'll be back before you know it.
I have come to know this team as a place where we look out for one another, where we are free to race toward our dreams.
Please, treasure the bonds that we've forged.
And Rice...
Y-yes?
I hope to see you pursue your own dream... of becoming a runner people will be glad to see win.
Sob. McQueeeeen!
After a heartfelt farewell, McQueen steps away from the team for a time.
A few months later, Rice Shower begins to struggle once again.
In front is Biwa Hayahide! And Biwa Hayahide is first across the finish line! The bane of McQueen, Rice Shower, comes in fifth!
It's just loss after loss for Rice Shower.
After standing in the way of Bourbon and McQueen's records, too. Like, c'mon, try a little harder.
There's one question on everybody's mind, where did that Rice Shower go?
Pant, pant... Phew...
Your performance on the final stretch isn't bad. How does it feel?
I feel like I can catch up to the lead, and I know I'm not running out of stamina, but...
To be honest, the cause of her losing streak still eludes me.
Winning the spring Tenno Sho gave her a boost of confidence and optimism.
But her results in every race since haven't showed that.
Maybe it's still the booing getting to her, even if she doesn't realize it.
Do you want to step away from racing for a bit?
...No, I'll keep running.
I told myself that no matter how much I lose, or how many people boo me, I'll still stand tall.
Besides, I need to become someone fans want to win. I promised McQueen.
Trainer, I'm going for another lap!
But there's no end in sight for her slump.
And next we have Rice Shower, who's been on a losing streak. Will she return to form in this race?
...
She's just gonna lose again.
I mean, she tries hard, you gotta give her that.
Fair. Takes a lot to not give up after losing so much...
Rice Shower finishes in sixth!
Where is the Rice Shower who once stood in Mihono Bourbon and Mejiro McQueen's way?!
...Sigh.
Good job out there.
She forces a smile, but she's already welling up...
It's okay to cry.
...No, I won't cry. If I'm going to cry, I want it to be tears of joy.
All right, back to training! C'mon, Trainer!
As she runs off, her steps seem incredibly light for one who just suffered a heavy loss.
What can I do to make sure her next tears are tears of joy?
13. A Smile on Every Face
76 linesPant, pant...
No matter how hard she runs, Rice can't seem to find a win. Still, she hasn't given up on training.
Gotta give credit to Rice. Takes a whole lotta something to keep running her heart out after all those losses.
Makes you wish we could get her a win somehow...
Pardon the intrusion.
Wait, McQueen?!
Out of the blue, McQueen shows up to practice. It feels like it's been forever since she left the team.
I saw Rice didn't do so well in her last race. How's she doing now?
She's still got the drive, and she's training like always, but for some reason she just can't deliver.
She's just... missing something. That something she had when she raced you and Bourbon.
...I see.
Perhaps she's lost sight of a target to chase.
Which means that if you're able to give her a new target, she may run like she once did.
In other words... I'd best hurry and get changed.
Wait, what? You're going to run?
Why else do you think I've come here?
I still have some unfinished business, but I have a bit more free time than before.
Besides, I don't think I can wait any longer to run with the team again.
Oh, but before that, I have a favor to ask you.
McQueen?! And...
I received a sudden invite to come help out.
McQueen's "favor" was for me to call Mihono Bourbon over.
I've been waiting for you to return to form. Hopefully this session brings you closer to a win.
Bourbon... You're the best!
Now then, just like old times, I want you to follow right behind Bourbon and me.
Right! Just keep following you and Bourbon!
...Just to clarify, that does not include in our private lives. Follow within reason, please.
All right! I'll chase Rice from behind then! And when I catch up to her, I'll yank her tail!
Hweh?!
We'll help out too!
Ooh, then how about we take turns setting the pace?
Okay! Let's do this!
Rice, seeing your hard work... your indomitable spirit, is a big inspiration to us all.
Now show us once more, how you left me and Bourbon in the dust.
...Okay. I will!
Team Sirius. A team whose members continually inspire and push each other to be better.
With the encouragement of her teammates, Rice takes to the track once more, her second spring Tenno Sho.
Hey Trainer, if I win, you'll take us to that famous amusement park... right?
Why do you think I've been eating so much instant ramen?
Heheh... But you know, I like the other park too.
As long as you're there, and the team's there, we can have fun anywhere. Just seeing the others smile makes me smile too.
And I want to make them smile today. So I'm going to give this race my all.
You've got this.
Yeah! I should get going now!
She looks so tiny compared to the expanse of turf, but she makes it hers.
Here's Rice Shower! She makes her move! She's pushed up into the lead!
Even when her will to win seemed faint, she refused to give up, and just kept running.
Rice Shower isn't giving up the lead! She's desperately holding on! And now... she's done it!
Rice Shower returns to the winner's circle in the spring Tenno Sho!
And I'm not the only one who's taken notice.
After denying so many records, and losing so many times, she finally wins, huh.
How long were you gonna make us wait?! Congrats, Rice!
Good job! You were great!
Wooo!
Huh? Wh-wha?!
The cheers are deafening! The entire stadium is lavishing Rice Shower with praise!
They... they're happy... They're smiling!
When the whole world seemed to be dragging her down, she crawled back up, one step at a time.
She held on. Worked harder than ever. And now, she's rewarded with love from all.
...Thank you, everyone!
I'll keep running, forever and ever! I'll run until the whole world's smiling!
Hey, Trainer?
I was wondering... Could you treat me one more time?
You see, when I was little, I read a lot of picture books. They taught me how to dream.
So now it's my turn. I want to make a picture book that'll inspire others to dream.
The skies became dark, and storms raged on for days and days. Violent winds bellowed down from the mountains as they shook with anger.
"I wish someone would make the scary weather go away and give us clear skies."
The people all made the same wish, and that's when the witch appeared.
As they all looked on expectantly, the witch summoned her courage and cast a spell.
A gentle breeze began to blow, and the clouds parted in an instant.
The mountains regained their lush green, and the air grew crisp and fresh.
The people rejoiced and welcomed the witch.
"So this is why I have these powers!"
The witch returned their greetings with a smile.
And so the witch continued her travels under that big blue sky, forever and ever...
Using her magic to bring happiness everywhere she went.
