1. The Highest of Ambitions
74 linesOur next segment today will be... Twinkle Spotlight, where we highlight racers in the Twinkle Series!
With the Classics fast approaching, everyone is abuzz about the stacked lineup this year. Some are even declaring this the Golden Generation of racing!
Among them is this racer, whose carefree personality conceals her cunning front-running strategy, Seiun Sky!
Manipulating the rest of the pack into keeping up with her pace, racing fans have dubbed her the Trickster!
Up next, we have a runner coming off of three consecutive victories, including a graded race, King Halo!
Expectations are high for this racer considering her family background, but her performance has yet to disappoint! We're all wondering just how many G1 trophies she'll snatch!
And we can't forget the condor soaring in from America and snatching wins left and right! She is the unstoppable Phantom Bird... El Condor Pasa!
Her claim to be the world's strongest racer doesn't seem to be said in jest! Her debut race performance has convinced fans that she will indeed prove herself worthy of that title!
We also have another Umamusume from America, Grass Wonder! Her grace and poise may be reminiscent of Japanese beauty, but in her heart burns the soul of a samurai!
Taking on the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes with an undefeated record, she claimed the crown of best junior racer in record time! Since that fearsome performance, people have taken to calling her the Beast.
And finally, last but not least, we have a racer who came all the way from Hokkaido to chase her dream, Special Week!
Her raw talent led to her transfer to Tracen Academy, and it was on full display at her debut! Fans are already speculating that she'll play a significant role in the Golden Generation!
Just what sort of performance will we witness at her second race ever? Will we all bear witness to a legend in the making?!
This is it... I'm one step closer to becoming the best in Japan!
I can't believe I looooost!
Waaaah! Losing sucks, doesn't it? It's okay, just let it all out!
To become the best racer in Japan... That is the dream that brought Special Week to Tracen Academy.
After her debut race ended in a phenomenal victory, she was excited for her second race... which unfortunately ended with her taking a close second.
Urgh... Mom said she was going to watch my race on TV and cheer me on too... I was really rar'n to go...
But I couldn't do it... I just couldn't pass herrrr!
But you did your best, right?! You fought so hard, Speeee!
Um... Could you two please calm down? We wouldn't want to interfere with anyone's training...
I will say though, I was also a bit surprised by the results. It seemed like something tripped you up.
Yeah... You were doing so well in training...
There's nothing wrong with your running. I wouldn't have you race if there was.
You definitely have a talent for athletics. Heck, I'd say your abilities, particularly your final push at the end, are on track to rival Tickezo and Brian.
Stamina-wise, you catch your breath after running fairly quickly, so I don't foresee any issues increasing the race distance either.
Only issue I can see... is that she's wet behind the ears.
What about my ears?
Before Tracen, you never ran with other Umamusume, right? Running by yourself and running with a whole pack of racers are worlds apart.
You can't expect a course that plays to your strengths or a comfortable pace. It's all about learning how to crush your opponents anytime and anywhere.
That's right! And experience will get you there!
Mm-hm! Besides, you've only lost once.
Don't forget, we've got your back! When you fall, we'll be there to catch ya! So go ahead and crash into any obstacles at full speed!
Well, maybe don't... go that far.
But it is true that you have our full support.
Spe, why don't we all start running together more? If it's experience you need, that's probably the best solution.
Suzuka... You guys...
All right, I'll add more practice races to our regimen! Now that we know what we need to work on, all that's left is to move forward!
Right! We certainly don't want to move backwards!
I made a promise to my mom! I've got to become the best racer in all of Japan!
Urraaaugh! Here I goooo!
Special Week throws herself fully into her practice races, and before long, she's shaken free of the stupor her loss put her in.
Watching her go, I'm reminded of the day I first scouted her. Just like back then, her running seems to embody the earnest desire to achieve her dreams.
Excellent work, Special Week. I believe that concludes today's training regimen.
You really showed that vicious training who's boss! Which makes sense, seeing as you're MY protege!
Huff... puff... You've all been working so hard for me, so I knew I had to return the favor!
If we keep this up, you'll get a feel for racing in no time. But that's enough for today. Let's just finish off with a cooldow...
Um, actually... do you think I could run just a little more? I think I can keep going.
Whoa there, don'tcha think you're going overboard?
Ehehe, what can I say? I just want to run!
You see... I don't actually know how I'm going to become the best racer in Japan yet.
I need to achieve something big if I want to proudly tell my mom that I've become the best in Japan. But no matter how much I think about it, I can't figure out what that is.
True, "the best racer in Japan" is a rather vague concept. It could refer to your record or some singular, historic accomplishment.
Right. But sitting around thinking about it all the time isn't gonna get me anywhere, so I figured I should take it one step at a time and focus on what I can achieve now.
And you know what? Running with you all gave me an idea! Something that'll get me just a teeeensy bit closer to my goal!
And what would that be?
Becoming a Triple Crown champion!
Comin' outta the gates runnin', I see!
The Satsuki Sho, Derby, and finally the Kikuka Sho... Winning even one of those races takes top-level skills.
I'd say surviving all those interviews after taking the Triple Crown was just as hard...
Well yeah, what'd you expect?! The Triple Crown's the HIGHEST of honors!
And I need to aim for the top if I want my dream to come true. I guess you could say the path from Hokkaido to all of Japan is the high road!
Whether the Triple Crown champion could be considered the best racer in all of Japan would certainly make for a hot debate...
But considering the scale of her dream, I think it's a fitting goal for the immediate future.
Well, I suppose such a big goal would indeed warrant a more intensive training regimen.
Right. If that's what you want, Spe, then all I can say is yes! Now... get back to training!
Okay! Be right back!
No way am I letting you have all the fun! Wait up! Let's do some partner runnin'!
Hehe, it's no wonder why you invited Special Week to join our team.
Even after facing defeat, she bounces back more determined than ever...
That steadfast optimism of hers is exactly why I want to help her make her dreams come true.
C'mon, Spe! The road to the Triple Crown is long and winding! Do fifty laps on the dirt course, ON THE DOUBLE!
FIFTY?! N-no waaay!
2. For My Moms Too!
66 linesFrom the inside comes Special Week! Special Week makes her move! With a lead of three to four lengths... she crosses the goal!
In her first stab at a graded race, she takes the Kisaragi Sho with ease!
"Special Week bounces back with a splendid victory! With the Classics in her sights, she makes her way to the Yayoi Sho."
Ehehe... There's something a little embarrassing about seeing yourself in a magazine.
Spe, you must hold your head high! Your fans want to see a proud, strong racer for them to cheer on!
Gotta say, with all these eyes on you, it feels like I know a celebrity.
But what about you? You haven't even lost once yet. Everyone's saying you're going to be a major player in the Classics this year.
C'mooon, I just got lucky.
I'm glad to hear you're all doing so well.
Ooohohoho! Speaking of major players, I'd say I make that list too, wouldn't you?
Yeah, King! You were sooo close to winning that last race!
O-ohohoho! Rising from the ashes of defeat undaunted is the mark of a true first-rate Umamusume!
Anyway, is what the article said true? Your next race is the Yayoi Sho?
Yup, sure is. Why?
What a coincidence. I look forward to seeing your skills with my own eyes.
For I am also running in the Yayoi Sho.
Huh?
Hold on, isn't your next race also the Yayoi Sho, Sei?
Yup. Feel free to go easy on me, guys.
Seiun Sky flies ahead! Her lead just keeps growing and growing... and she crosses the goal!
In her next race, Special Week will finally be squaring up with the major players in her generation.
But the impending showdown hasn't dampened her drive to win. In response, I've been busy gathering as much information as I can.
Staying late for research again, are we?
Yeah. The Classics are already a challenge, and Spe's going to be up against the Golden Generation on top of that.
But she's got a dream, and she's determined to make it happen. So I'll spare no effort to help her.
You really haven't changed a bit.
You are the pillar that raises us up to reach our goals. That was the case at the Tenno Sho all that time ago, and it's still the case now.
Mejiro McQueen's expression beams with pride and gratitude.
Her dream to conquer the Tenno Sho wasn't her dream alone, as a new trainer, it also meant a lot to me.
It's hard to believe our team was on the verge of disbanding at one point.
It is, isn't it?
In any case, you've got quite the dream on your hands this time. I'm not even sure how one becomes the best racer in Japan.
She says that, but her eyes glint with anticipation.
I can tell she believes in her teammate and can't wait to see how Special Week pulls it off.
It may be tough, but we'll make it happen.
And know that your team will be behind you the entire way.
Let's see, what else... "I'll be taking on the Yayoi Sho next, my first step towards being the best in Japan."
Is that a letter to your mother?
Yup. I know I could just call her, but isn't it... kind of embarrassing to say certain things out loud?
So I'm telling her through a letter instead. After all, I still want her to know I'm working hard to be the best in Japan!
Hehe.
Huh? Did I... say something funny?
No, not at all. I just think it's cute that you're so considerate of your mother.
Ehehe... Well yeah, I'm super grateful for my moms! Both of them gave me lots and lots of love, making me who I am today!
What do you mean, both of them?
Well, you see, I actually have two mothers. My mama, who gave birth to me, and my mom who raised me.
And they're the ones who gave me my dream. The dream to be the best racer in Japan.
Originally, that dream belonged to my birth mother.
But... for a variety of reasons, she never got to set foot on the turf. So her dream went unfulfilled.
So when she was pregnant with me, she used to say I would grow up to be the best racer in Japan in her place. She was just joking, of course.
But I bet she was really looking forward to seeing me chase that dream with her... Unfortunately though, she died shortly after I was born.
Oh, I'm so sorry...
Ah! I didn't mean to darken the mood! In fact, I just wanted to brag to you about how amazing my mama was!
But after she passed away, her close friend took me in and raised me. That's my mom.
According to her, it wasn't easy though. Evidently I'd run off the second she took her eyes off me...
Hehe.
Once I was a little older, she told me about Mama and the dream she left behind.
...Even now, Mom still occasionally asks me if I really want to become the best racer in Japan. I think she's worried I'm doing this for Mama instead of myself.
But that's not true. You chose this path for yourself.
Right! I want to be the best racer in Japan and make both of my moms proud!
And I can't break the promise I made you when I won my debut race! You know, that I'd make my dream come true!
So just you watch! I'll win the Yayoi Sho for both our promise and my moms!
Hehe, I can hardly wait.
Ehehe... Good!
3. Another Side of My Friends
51 linesOh come on, I didn't do anything special.
But you did! You taught me all sorts of stuff about running, helped me around the school, and most of all...
If I hadn't seen you run with a big smile on your face, I would never have had the courage to chase my dreams!
...
Relax, Spe. Taking a few deep breaths should calm you down. Give it a try.
G-good idea! Inhale... BWAAAH!
The Yayoi Sho is finally here, and with three racers from the Golden Generation set to compete, it's drawn quite the crowd.
Today's line-up is packed with heavy hitters, Seiun Sky and King Halo in particular. This isn't going to be easy.
They're hard to ignore, but try to focus on yourself! You've trained hard for today, and now's the time to show it all off!
And of course, we shall be cheering you on from the sidelines.
I'm sure both your moms are eager to see you cross the finish line in first place.
Looks like you're in tip-top shape, Spe.
Ah, Sei and King!
I was just sooo nervous last night, I couldn't sleep. Maybe I'll stick to the back of the pack today.
What, really?!
Of course not... She's obviously lying. Now stop that, you're going to break our hard-earned focus.
Listen, this isn't like the practice runs we've done up until now. This is the real deal, a genuine competition.
We may be classmates, but on the turf, we are rivals. I intend to claim victory after victory and prove I am indeed first-rate!
Someone's fired up today...
Y-yeah...
Well, only one way to find out who will win. See you on the turf, Spe.
...I won't let all the help Trainer and my teammates gave me go to waste. I will win!
In the lead is Seiun Sky! Seiun Sky's the one to catch! In hot pursuit is King Halo, currently fighting for third place!
But from the outside comes Special Week! Special Week blasts ahead with insane speed!
Two lengths, now one, she's caught up! She takes the lead! Special Week passes the finish line in first place!
Second place is Seiun Sky, followed by King Halo! It seems the rumors were true, this titanic trio truly did dominate the Yayoi Sho!
In the showdown between three terrific fighters in the Golden Generation, Special Week emerges victorious.
With that triumph under our belt, we begin our training for the Satsuki Sho after a few days' rest...
Phew... Excellent work, Special Week. Your movements mid-race have certainly improved.
Huff, huff... I think I've finally gotten the hang of strategizing while running!
Of course, I couldn't have done that without the help of you and Suzuka!
Just remember, we're not the ones you'll be racing. You need to research your opponents too.
Right! Sei tends to stay at the front, while King stays in the middle of the pack... Front... middle... front... middle...
You've really started paying attention to your opponents since the Yayoi Sho. Did something happen?
Well, I just noticed something while racing them.
Sei, King, and I are all really close. We even hang out outside of school sometimes.
But they were both so different at the Yayoi Sho... I'd never seen them make those sorts of faces before.
They were just so determined... especially towards the finish line.
I might've won the Yayoi Sho, but if I had let up for even a second, that might not have been the case.
Which means only one thing, I have to train even harder!
Having her teammates with similar strategies stand in for her opponents during training was actually Special Week's idea.
Other racers might let victory go to their heads, but Special Week feels even more drive to improve. That really speaks to the power she witnessed from the Golden Generation.
All right, let's rearrange the training regimen a bit. Your final spurt continues to impress, so we should hone that skill some more.
Let's win us the Satsuki Sho!
4. Mine for the Taking
80 linesYawn... Mornin'...
Sei! Morning! Did you not get enough sleep last night? Kinda hard to believe with all the napping you do.
Ignoring that cheerful dig at my sleep habits... Can you blame me with all this warm, toasty weather?
Yeah, I work up a real sweat at training, so I'm ready to hit the hay by the time I'm finished.
Just the other night, I fell asleep while standing on the scale in the bath's changing room. Everyone saw my weight...
And you thought my sleeping habits were strange?
At long last, I have retuuurned!
Long time no see, everybody!
Huh... Wait, what?! Tsuru?!
That's right! Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi, reporting for duty!
Ohhh, long time no see! So you're finally cleared to come back to school, huh?
That's great, Tsuru! Are you feeling better?
Better than better, I'm great! After all that rest, my body's ready to put the pedal to the metal!
Maybe ease up on the gas this time, okay? You remember what happened last time...
Urrrgh... Everyone's made their debuts already, while I haven't even raced once.
You can't help that you were sick... All you can do now is practice lots!
Yeah... You're right! So what if I'm lagging behind? That just means I need to run faster!
Besides, there's still time till the Classic races! That's my once-in-a-lifetime chance to shine like President Rudolf!
Then let's aim to run in the Classics together!
Spe, thank youuu! Then it's a promise! Now, off I gooo!
You are just getting better, so don't overdo it!
Don't you worry! I'm ready to cut loose and fly, babyyy!
Huff... Puff... Wheeeeze!
Ooooh... Think I might've... overdone it... Can't... go on!
AHHH! Tsuru?!
Oh, yeah... That did happen, huh?
I really wanted to make it in time for the Classics, but unfortunately, my debut's been pushed back to after the Satsuki Sho...
Tsuru, I...
I know it sounds bad, but! There's still the Derby and the Kikuka Sho, right?!
I'll be on your heels by then, so for now, enjoy the Satsuki Sho!
Mm-hm! I'll train super hard so I can give you a good challenge! All right, this calls for an extra post-training run tonight!
...You really are a hard worker, Spe.
There! All done, Sky!
Mngh?
Oh my bad, my bad. Didn't realize you were sleepin'.
You just... smell like the sun, Gramps. Sitting next to you makes me so sleeeepy.
Hahaha! Now there's a new one! I smell like the sun, huh? Anyway, look, Sky, I finished your lure!
Whoa! Thanks, Gramps! Now come on, we gotta get to the river right away!
Whoa there, don'tcha see the sun setting? We don't want you gettin' lost in the dark, so let's leave the fishing for tomorrow.
Awww, but I wanna try out your lure now...
Remember, the key to fishing is patience.
Just like running.
What do you mean?
Think about it. Even if your friends are running faster than you, you can still win as long as you stay calm and wait them out.
You know, it's my dream to see you grow up and run in the Classics!
And if you end up actually winning? Why, I'd be the happiest man alive...
...
Oh whoa, that nap went on for way too long.
Ah geez, are you setting already, Mr. Sun? Why'd you have to make the weather all warm and toasty anyway?
The dorms are about sixty kilometers away... I wonder if I can make it before curfew.
The curtains rise on the first race of the Classic Triple Crown, the Satsuki Sho.
The current favorite to win is Special Week, followed closely by Seiun Sky and King Halo, rounding out this generation's big three!
As we speak, our racers are slowly making their way over from the paddock, no doubt savoring every step of this tremendous moment in their careers!
Just who among the Golden Generation will be the one to actually snatch the gold today?
Focus, focus... The Yayoi Sho was on this very track, so I just gotta run like last time!
Maaan, hard to believe we're running in the Classics, huh?
Did you see all the fans? And those cheers! This is nothing like the races we've been running!
But that's not gonna scare me! This is the first race of the Triple Crown, I have to win!
Oooh, somebody's motivated.
Guess that's what it takes to be the best in Japan... That's the dream your moms gave you, right?
Yup! They entrusted me with this precious dream, so I'll see it come true!
Entrusted dreams, eh? You know, I've got one of those too... From my gramps.
Really? You do?
Gramps has been looking forward to this day for a long, looong time. He's always wanted to see me win a Classic race, you see.
Is that so! Then we're the same! I've got my moms' dream, and you've got your grandpa's!
Hold on now... I wouldn't say we're the same. Sure, his dreams are part of why I'm here...
But I'm running today for me. That's where we differ.
Huh?
Even without my gramps pushing me to race, I'd still be running.
If you can't see the difference there, I think I've got this in the bag.
The Satsuki Sho... is mine for the taking.
Or is it? Hehehe, anyway, see you on the track...
We're... not the same?
After spending most of the race in a surprising second, Seiun Sky picks up speed! She's rounding the final corner and making her break for it!
Seiun Sky has taken taken the lead, with King Halo in steadfast pursuit! From the outside comes Special Week!
But it's no use! Seiun Sky pulls further ahead!
And Seiun Sky crosses the finish line!
The victor and proud owner of the first crown is... Seiuuun Skyyy!
5. What They Have and I Don't
58 lines...
Spe... Are you all right?
Huh?! Ah, yup, right as rain! No problems here!
I was just thinking about the race... Sei and King really were strong, huh? Even stronger than they were at the Yayoi Sho.
Down the stretch, I was so sure I could catch up, so sure I could pass them. I could tell they were already spent.
But when I tried, it's like the harder I ran, the farther away they got...
From what I saw, you did everything right strategy-wise. I don't think this was a matter of skill or lack thereof.
Instead, it felt more like... drive. It's like their running, especially Seiun Sky's, had another side to it. One you can't describe with words.
Another side to it...
If you can't see the difference there, I think I've got this in the bag.
The Satsuki Sho... is mine for the taking.
(Huh...)
...Is something wrong, Spe?
Actually, Sei and I were talking before the race. She said our reasons for running were similar, but definitely not the same.
And that if I couldn't tell the difference, the race was as good as hers...
Um, Suzuka... You run because you want to see the scenery from the front, correct?
Yes, I long for the scenery I saw when I was little...
The rush I felt back then still lingers within me. That's why I run, to feel that rush once more.
But what does that have to do with your race?
Ah, nothing! I just needed a reminder, that's all!
(In other words... Suzuka runs because she wants something.)
But I'm running today for me. That's where we differ.
(Sei and Suzuka are running for themselves...)
(My dream is to be the best in Japan... but I inherited that dream from my moms.)
(What about me? Why do I run?)
Spe seems to be taking this loss quite hard.
Yeah, it's strange. She moved on so quickly after her last loss.
But I suppose it makes sense. Her hopes of being a Triple Crown champion were dashed right out the gate...
I don't... think that's the problem.
Oh? Then what is?
I can't put it into exact words, but I think she's more disappointed in herself than the race results.
My brow furrows. If not her loss, what else could get Special Week so down? She's never let anything distract her from her dream.
Well, whatever it is, for now, all I can do is be there for her. Hopefully, she'll be back to chasing her dreams again in no time.
No doubt I'll be asking for help from you and the team. I hope you're ready.
Of course. Anytime.
Huff... huff... And, goooal!
Phew...
That was a full 2,400 meters, the same distance as the Derby. You've never run a race that long, right?
But you know, the Derby is a lot bigger than just 2,400 meters. If you add in the dreams and passion, all the stories not yet told... it's so much... bigger than us!
Dreams, huh...
Um... Tickezo? You started running because of your dream to win the Derby, right?
Yup! That was my dream from the time I was little!
That's when I saw the Derby for the first time, and it was love at first sight! I just had to win it for myself!
And then, you made your dream come true...
Yeah, and you know, something tells me that the strength of that dream is what got me the win.
A dream all my own... Something I thought about day and night. I really think that drive to win is what helped me train as hard as I did.
Now if only I could do the same for schoolwork! Ahaha!
A dream all your own...
I intend to claim victory after victory and prove I am indeed first-rate!
But I'm running today for me. The Satsuki Sho... is mine for the taking.
...It's amazing how you, McQueen, and Suzuka all have your own dreams to chase after.
Huh? I mean, aren't you doing the same? You wanna be the best racer in Japan, right?
Well, yeah, but... it's a little different...
(Becoming the best racer in Japan is something I promised my mom...)
(Sure, I always thought that was my dream too, but now it feels... different somehow.)
(Their dreams are their own, something they decided for themselves, while I... Do I even know why I run?)
6. Full of Ambition! The Japanese Derby
114 lines...
The rush I felt back then still lingers within me. That's why I run, to feel that rush once more.
A dream all my own... Something I thought about day and night. I really think that drive to win is what helped me train as hard as I did.
How do I even... find my own dream?
What do we have here? The Spe, slacking off in a place like this?
Sei?
Aw maaan, I'm not getting any bites today.
Oh well, fishing is really just a battle of patience. And no way I would let myself lose to a fish.
...
...You know, I really want to give a race performance that leaves everyone speechless.
Huh?
I've never been... a runner people write home about. Ever since I was a kid, my race results were only so-so.
But that didn't stop me from wanting to win.
So that got me thinking, how can a runner like me pull it off? I thought and thought, and eventually, I figured it out.
I came up with my strategy and everything fell into place! The underdog Sei wins! You should've seen it. The shocked faces of the crowd and the fan fav were priceless!
Maaan, did that feel good. I never knew racing could make me feel something like that.
Guess you could call it a formative experience. But that's what sealed it for me. My reason for running is leaving people gobsmacked.
That's why I'll do whatever it takes to win. No trick is off-limits...
Sei...
I bet you've experienced something like that yourself. Something that made your heart soar.
Now that you mention it...
Oh! And, and! You look so glamorous when you're runn'n! Like, sooo pretty!
If I hadn't seen you run with a big smile on your face, I would never have had the courage to chase my dreams!
I...
I remember thinking... I want to run like Suzuka.
I'd just moved here and was seeing an Umamusume run for the very first time. She was just so fast, and so beautiful.
I wanted to be just like her, run just like her! So I set off, determined to catch up!
I'm still far from reaching her level, but... I know I'll reach Suzuka someday!
I see, I see... So you wanna be like Suzuka, huh? That is ambitious.
But it's perfect for you. So that's your reason for running, huh?
And just so we're clear, the dream you inherited from your moms is just as much your dream as theirs.
Heck, I'd say we're pretty similar in that way. I've got two dreams too, one from my gramps and one that's all me.
I guess having two whole dreams is what got me so worked up in the Satsuki Sho.
So those two dreams, and the drive to make them both come true, are what helped you fight until the very end.
That's just how badly you wanted the win.
Still, I sure hope helping you today doesn't come back to bite me.
Now that you and I know what our dreams are, I bet the Derby's gonna be real tricky.
Yeah, no way am I losing this time!
I mean, I've got three dreams on my side.
Mine, my mama's, and my mom's!
So I'm definitely winning the Derby!
Oh? Well, aren't you confident.
In that case, my help ends here! From now on, you'll have to rely on your trainer. Who, by the way, seems pretty worried.
Can't help my rival out too much now, can I?
Okay, okay! I'm opening up!
Trainer! Let's get training for the Derby!
Another year has passed, and we're here at last! Welcome to the Japanese Derby!
Just who among the Golden Generation will snatch this most honorable of crowns?
That's it, just breathe... Watch out for that first corner, and stick to your own pacing...
Mm-hm! Now just remember where you are, the Derby! The DEEERBYYYY! Be sure to take it all in!
You know this already, but this is your one and only chance to win the title of Derby Umamusume, so you have to throw your WHOLE HEART into it!
My whole heart... Got it!
Have some confidence. You've put in the work. Now all that's left to do is win.
Um... I really want to thank you all. If you hadn't helped me with my training, I wouldn't be where I am today!
There was a moment where I thought I was missing something you all had... But then someone reminded me just how special my dreams are!
If I'm going to become the best racer in Japan for my moms and catch up to my favorite racer in the whole world, I gotta give today my all!
We'll be right there, watching over you.
Give it all you've got!
Now that's the fiery Spe I know.
Yup, I'm here to win, and that's that!
The same goes for me... I don't think I've ever wanted to win more. This is the one and only Derby, after all.
Guess that's what happens when you've got dreams. You can't help but be motivated.
As your rival... I hope you're going to give me a challenge.
The feeling is mutual. No holding back!
Yeah!
Eighteen of the best classic-year racers are now entering the gates!
Before them lies 2,400 meters of track, and for one of them, glory! The Japanese Derby... begins now!
The winner and proud owner of the Derby Umamusume title is... Special Week! The crowd welcomes its new champion with thunderous applause!
Wow...
Hngh... Why? Why did I...
Sei... King...
...
Uuugh... Well, Spe, you got me good this time.
The other Classics have nothing on the Derby. I was really looking forward to taking Gramps and the crowd by surprise today...
But enough of that... What I should be saying here is... Congratulations, Spe.
Thanks, Sei!
...I too must offer my commendations as your competitor. Congratulations, Special Week.
Thank you, King!
But our next race will end in my triumph. I swear... I shall never again let my inexperience get the better of me.
Got that? A first-rate racer never lowers her head! The last crown of the Triple Crown tour will be mine! I swear it!
Come on, you really think I'll hand it over that easily?
In fact, something tells me the Kikuka Sho's gonna be my race. Call it... intuition.
Well, I'm not giving up either! So let's settle this in the next race, the Kikuka Sho!
Oh, here she comes! Oooy! Spe!
Ah, you guys!
Congratulations on winning the Derby!
Spe, you were a totally different racer out there!
Mm-hm, the final straightaway was where you really shiiined!
SPEEEE! You were just AMAAAZING! Once again, another Derby legend has been boooorn!
A five-length lead... I'm impressed.
Indeed. I could feel your passion radiate through the venue much more powerfully than at the Satsuki Sho.
Ehehe, thank you so much!
Congratulations, Spe.
Suzuka, did you see?! I think that was my best performance yet!
A complete victory, one where I crossed the finish line way before anyone else! Just like you, Suzuka! Or, at least, that's how it felt...
When I was running, I just kept thinking about how I was going to tell my moms that I had become a Derby Umamusume. I think that helped too.
It's kinda hard to explain, but that thought really helped at the end. It felt like my strength really, um, swelled up? Like... um!
It sounds like your dreams gave you an extra helping of strength.
Yeah!
Trainer, winning the Japanese Derby feels like I'm one step closer to becoming the best racer in Japan.
But, but! This is only one step in a really, really long journey...
So please, help me get even closer to my dream!
Among the mighty racers comprising the Golden Generation, Special Week now stands apart as the Derby Umamusume.
And within that title shines the brilliant light of her dream.
All right, let's set off running!
Okay!
7. A Determined Beginning
87 linesWell, everyone, let us ring in the new year on a happy note. Here's to another year of victories for the Mejiro family!
Hear, hear! Time to DIG IN, McQueen! Should I have sushi first? Or maybe crab?! Oh, how will I ever decide!
Likewise, I am currently deciding whether I should throw you out. This party is meant for the Mejiro family, you know.
Come on, Little Miss Rule Follower! We've swapped backwash from sports drinks countless times, we basically share the same DNA!
Now come! Before all those little fishies escape, let us fill the fishing nets of our stomachs with the bounty of the sea!
Can't you at least try to make sense...
Happy New Year, McQueen.
Ryan, Dober. Happy New Year to you two as well. May this year be as splendid as the last.
Yeah, let's hope so. We'll just have to train our hardest yet.
You must be in high spirits, Dober, considering your G1 win last year. I've heard a great many whispers about you. It seems expectations are high.
Ehehe, she sure is popular, all right. As a fellow Mejiro, I couldn't be more proud.
I-I'm not doing this to be popular! I just run the races I want to win.
Anyway, wouldn't you say there's someone else people are expecting a lot from?
Oh yeah... I just saw her a little bit ago...
Miss Bright, your speech is coming up, so please make your way to the stage.
...What speech?
The one where you talk about your achievements this last year! The one I just told you about!
Please, Miss... Don't forget again...
Oh? If it isn't Ryan. It's nice to see you as well, McQueen, Dober.
Looks like we're playing second fiddle to Ryan again.
Ahaha... Well, I have looked after her since she was little.
Bright, that was an excellent showing at the spring Tenno Sho. I heard you also received a URA Award.
The Tenno Sho is a race forever linked to the Mejiro family. It was my greatest honor to have taken home such a significant win.
But of course, I could not have achieved that honor without Ryan, my dear teammate. I am forever in your debt.
I'm just happy to see you bounce back. Your classic year was pretty rough, but it looks like that's behind you now.
Now we can focus on getting you some new titles in the new year!
It sounds like that's going to be quite the challenge this year.
I suppose you speak of... the Golden Generation.
Yeah. They've all moved on to their senior years now, which means we'll be facing off with them.
Hmmm...
No matter who my opponent is, I shall focus only on achieving what I must.
After all those defeats, I have finally come into my own. I have no intention of giving up my place so easily.
And I will prove it... by taking the spring Tenno Sho shield once more.
For the Mejiro family, the Tenno Sho is indeed a special race. If you manage to win it again, it would be the first time since McQueen.
Ehehe, Bright's pretty stubborn, you know. If she says she's going to win, that's that.
Ahhh, there you are, Miss Bright! I've been looking all over for you! It's time for your speech!
...What speech?
I can't do this agaiiin!
So Bright's next goal is the spring Tenno Sho...
Something wrong, McQueen?
No, rather... this was bound to happen.
Gods, buddhas, and the great Shiraoki! Please help me win lots and lots of races this year!
And... stop me from gaining weight even when I have dessert!
The new year has begun and with it, Special Week's senior year.
As a way to celebrate this turning of the pages, Team Sirius has gathered for our first shrine visit of the year.
Sorry for the wait, everyone! I'm all prayed up and ready to go!
You sure looked serious over there... By the way, who's Shiraoki?
I see you've been talking to Fukukitaru...
We can't rely on prayers alone. You're going to need to put in the effort if you want to make real progress.
Oh, of course! I'm gonna train harder than ever!
After all, if there's one thing I've learned this year, it's that first place reeeally doesn't come easy!
...Last year was hard on you, wasn't it?
After her Derby victory, we dove into training with vigor, hoping to follow up that win with more...
She just keeps going, going, and going! Look at Seiun Sky go! Special Week approaches from the outside! But it's too late!
Seiun Sky has officially won the Kikuka Sho! And her time is... 3:03.2! A new world record!
The Derby Umamusume Special Week follows three lengths behind to take second place!
El Condor, it's El Condor! Air Groove and Special Week try to narrow the gap, but it's too little, too late!
The classic-year Umamusume El Condor Pasa has taken on some of the world's top racers and emerged the Japan Cup champion!
As for her contemporary Special Week, her efforts on the final straight land her in third place!
Sei and El sure were amazing...
The Golden Generation sure is something else. Even the Derby Umamusume is struggling to win.
What's more, you'll be going up against the senior racers this year.
We can't let your seniors, or your juniors for that matter, get the better of you! We've got to work hard!
Right!
Even with her losing streak, Special Week continues to press onward, ever smiling. Her sparkling dreams continue to illuminate her path, unchanged by the passing of the new year.
Is something wrong, Suzuka?
Ah... No, it's nothing...
It's great Spe's reached her senior year and all, but have you already set her next goal?
Ah, actually, I wanted to ask the same thing! What's the plan, Trainer?
Well, I want to make use of those impressive skills of yours. Especially that stamina you use late in the race.
So I'm thinking the spring Tenno Sho would be the perfect place for you to shine.
The spring Tenno Sho!
Great idea! I wanna see Spe run in the spring Tenno Sho too!
Some of our team members have even won that race! I bet they can teach you all sorts of tips and tricks!
McQueen and Rice were both so cool when they won...
Uh-huh! Those races are what made me their fan for life!
Thank you so much! I promise I'll be the best student ever!
All right, why don't we go around to the stalls now? Buy whatever you want, my treat.
Let's start this year off on a good note!
Yeah! Look out, Tenno Sho! With that win, I'll be one step closer to being the best in Japan!
With those words, Special Week thrusts her determined fist into the air.
Her eyes seem fixed on both a clear objective and a far-off dream at the same time.
8. Chasing Our Dreams
55 linesAs her first race of the year, Special Week takes on the American JCC, a G2 race.
And here she comes! The Derby Umamusume Special Week makes her move!
Ahead by two, no, three lengths, she crosses the finish line! The Derby Umamusume Special Week has claimed an indisputable victory!
HELL YEAH! That's the ticket, Spe! Ya made this ol' heart beat agaaain!
This will serve as an excellent prelude to the spring Tenno Sho!
Spe, congratulations on your latest win. ♪
Mm-hm! Watching that had me jumping and screaming!
Ehehe, thanks, Grass. Thanks, Tsuru.
Among us friends, you're the first to win as a senior! Congratulations!
Well, technically, Tsuru was supposed to run before me.
Hnnngh... That's true, but...
Getting sick last year meant I could only race three times, but this year will be different!
I'm ringing in the new year with a race before anyone else! And after I claim victory there, I'm racing with you guys next!
Yeah, I can't wait to run with you!
Due to a leg injury, Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi will be absent for a while.
HUUUH?!
I ended up getting injured right after my debut... I finally got better in fall and was raring to go, but, well...
Don't you worry, though! Once I get the all-clear from the doctor, I'm charging in at full speed!
Your poor health may have kept you from running as much as you want, but what I have seen shows promise. I look forward to racing you someday.
Yeah, someday me, you, Grass, and El will all run together!
Oh? Does that mean you guys are going to France too?
France?
El will be touring in France starting in spring. She already showed such promise at the Japan Cup, so next, she's taking on the world.
What?! How come no one told me?! El, you're really going to France?!
Bueno, right? I'm going to take the whole world by stooorm!
Wow, really? I'm not going to lie, I can't even imagine.
But I will say, I'm gonna miss you. Won't you be lonely touring abroad?
I mean, if I said I won't be, that'd be a lie, a fib, pure fabrication.
That being said! The pull of my dreams calling my name is far stronger than any loneliness!
Your dreams...
I will show the world that I am the world's strongest racer! Don't miss any of my races, or else you'll miss seeing me take my throne!
So you're soaring off to the world stage in pursuit of your dreams! That's so cool, El!
Now I'm really fired up! I bet I could run a whole marathon RIGHT NO, cough, cough!
Please calm down, Tsuru. We don't want you getting injured again.
However, I understand the sense of urgency you feel. If we want to compete with El, we'll need to work hard.
Th-that's right! I've got the spring Tenno Sho and another race before that coming up, and I plan to win!
And then I'll be closer to my dreams too!
Suzuka, your massages are the best! Now my legs feel all soft and bendy!
You really gave training 110% today, didn't you?
That's because I found out El's going to race abroad.
Running abroad all by her lonesome has got to be scary, but El's still going for it to make her dreams come true.
Her dreams are calling to her, and she's chasing after them... No way I can sit still after hearing that!
Yes, what is it?
I'm... also thinking of racing abroad.
...Huh?
Since joining Sirius, I've seen so much beautiful scenery from the front.
Each run presents me with new scenery to take in, and each time, I'm left wanting more.
I want to run faster, go farther... and chase after even more beautiful scenery.
Try as I might, I can't quell this urge to run, so...
9. What Happens Now?
49 lines...
We have four forms of the first-person pronoun so far, I, my, mine, and myself. Name the last one, Special Week.
Huh? Ah, right! ...Wait, what?
The answer is "me," Spe. M-E.
Me? Ah, right! The answer is King!
That's not what I meant!
Special Week, King Halo... Expect extra homework for this...
Pheeew, I'm stuffed. That grated yam really hit the spot.
...
Spe? Something up?
Ah, no! I'm totally fine! But I guess I should dig in before my food gets cold!
Wait, huh?! Where'd all my food go?!
Uh, you ate it all at breakneck speed, remember?
...
Okay! Time to get this training show on the road!
Hell yeah! No way I can sit still after seeing you, Spe! Not when you're literally wearing your motivation like a badge of honor!
Uh-huh! You must be super serious about practice to come dressed in your signature racewear!
It wasn't intentional?!
Oh, Spe...
I'm guessing you told her about your plans.
Yes, last night. She was shocked, to say the least.
We could have figured that out just by looking at her.
Silence Suzuka revealed her desire to run abroad to me around the turn of the year.
Ever the curious one, Silence Suzuka's eyes began to wander overseas after achieving so much in the Twinkle Series here in Japan.
As her trainer, I have no reason to deny her ambitions. I plan on doing whatever I can to make her goals possible. However...
You've been friends with Special Week since her first days at the academy, so I knew she would be affected, but this is...
I look over and see a cloud of guilt looming over Silence Suzuka. She clearly cares deeply for her friend, but we need to put her needs first.
I know what you're thinking, but don't worry. The rest of the team and I will be here to cheer Spe on.
Just like we'll be doing for you.
All right, since Spe's already wearing her racewear, why don't you all get changed? We could use a change of pace!
Hehe, what an amusing idea. I can already hear the rumors among the other teams.
Suzuka... We are Team Sirius, a team that props up our racers as they reach for their dreams.
As they reach for their dreams...
Now, why don't you change into your signature racewear as well? You'll need all the extra spirit you can get if you want to succeed overseas.
Now then, to finish up, let's do one final lap around the track.
Phew! Now that was some good training!
Good work, everyone...
...
Huff, huff... Huff, huff...
(Even after all this time, Suzuka's running hasn't changed at all...)
(I want to run just like her... And to do that, I need to watch her run as much as I can.)
(But... I can't do that if she's abroad...)
10. When One Chapter Ends...
88 linesAh, McQueen!
Ryan, Bright! Are you warming up for practice?
Yes. The Hanshin Daishoten is fast approaching, so I must prepare.
Isn't Spe also participating in that race?
Yes, as a warm-up to the spring Tenno Sho.
Looks like we'll finally get to see what the Golden Generation's Derby Umamusume is made of.
I happened to watch her last race. Her form was most impressive.
However... This is not the time to focus on my opponents. I must hone my own senses and skills.
True, Bright here is the winner of last year's Hanshin Daishoten and spring Tenno Sho, after all.
And as champion, I must demonstrate that my victory was inevitable.
Well, you certainly have the mindset of a champion down.
Anyway, we should get to training. See ya later, McQueen!
Have a lovely day.
Trainer, Special Week... Your opponent shows no signs of weakness.
Special Week's next race steadily approaches. We should be perfecting our strategy and fine-tuning her form by now, but...
Huff... puff...
A little run like that doesn't usually tire you out.
S-sorry...
Why don't you take a break and try again? Practice makes power, right? Or, you know, something like that!
Right, that sounds good...
With her mind constantly on Silence Suzuka, Special Week hasn't been able to concentrate on practice at all.
Trainer? Pardon the intrusion.
Tazuna? Can I help you with something?
You can. Twinkle Monthly would like to speak with you. It seems they want to run a special feature on Team Sirius.
Whoa-ho-HO! Twinkle Monthly sure has some GREAT taste!
A special feature on us? That'd be amazing!
Hehe, they also gave us a survey for your team members to fill out. I'll be sure to send that to your office.
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
And one more thing... There's a former trainer with overseas experience visiting the academy.
I happened to mention Silence Suzuka, and they seemed interested in seeing her run today.
That would be super helpful. I'd love to get some insight.
Well, Suzuka? What do you think? Want to show off a bit to this trainer?
Yes, of course.
Suzuka!
Yes, Spe?
Ah, um, uh... sorry, never mind.
...
The trainer Tazuna mentioned has come to observe Silence Suzuka, so I'm currently having her show off her skills.
I head to the stands to watch over them and find Special Week likewise staring at Silence Suzuka.
So this is where you were.
Trainer...
I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me. I can't believe I almost tried to stop Suzuka...
No, I understand. You and Suzuka have been together ever since you entered the academy.
...I still remember that day so clearly, the day I first saw Suzuka run.
I'd just arrived from Hokkaido. Just as I was starting to worry I'd made a mistake coming here, I saw her.
The way she ran was just so awe-inspiring. I couldn't look away.
Ever since then, I've watched her run, hoping I could run like that... someday...
Special Week trails off, leaving us both standing in silence.
I'm sure even she wasn't aware of just how much motivation she got from watching Silence Suzuka run.
As I watch Silence Suzuka run down the track...
I remember the first time I saw her run. She looked like she was having so much fun.
Before long, she found her own running style, and the more people saw her run, the more expectations for her swelled.
Spe... you said you want to run like Suzuka, correct?
...Yes.
So, what exactly is it that you love about her running?
Huh? Isn't it obvious? I mean, it's so... pretty and cool...
And it makes you dream, doesn't it? You can't help but wonder what her next race will be like.
Yes, exactly! And every single time, she just blows you away!
That's why I want to see her race again and again! Like at the Osaka Hai! Or maybe a second Takarazuka Kinen win! Or maybe...
Ah...
Seeking out new scenery is Suzuka's dream.
When she runs, that's what she's chasing. And that steadfast drive of hers is what we fell in love with.
But you know... once she goes abroad, I think we'll see a run we love even more.
...
You're right... In fact, I'm sure of it!
Suzuka's running will take her farther than ever before! Farther than anything we could ever imagine!
That's what I love about her running... If I tried to stop her, it wouldn't be the same anymore!
And if you want to run like her, to catch up to her, then you'll need to work hard.
Let's make you the best racer in Japan!
Ehehe... Right!
The stands are packed here at the Hanshin Racecourse, and every moment that ticks by just makes the crowd more excited for the race to come!
And two of the favorites to win are the Golden Generation's Special Week and last year's champion Mejiro Bright!
Here at the Hanshin Daishoten, they will clash for the very first time! Just who will come out on top?!
Rain means a muddy track... I'll need to be extra careful to not use too much stamina. Don't wanna overdo it in the beginning.
Good, keep thinking like that. The weather will slow down the pace, so you should be able to sit near the front.
Right, okay... I've got this!
The 3,000-meter course at Hanshin has a short stretch with an uphill. Once you hit the third corner, turn on the gas!
Um... I can't tell if you're being serious, or if you're messing with me...
The hell ya mean?! You can't spell Hanshin Daishoten without "Gold Ship!"
Instead of spouting your nonsense, focus on making your debut!
Still, what rotten luck. I can't believe Suzuka's flight was scheduled for the same time as the race...
Ah, actually, that was my idea. I wanted her to leave today.
If Suzuka's going to run overseas worry-free... I need to show her that I can win, even if she's not by my side!
Is that so? Well then, you better seize victory in today's race.
Yeah, you've got all of us behind you today. Make us proud.
Show them everything you've got!
Okay, you got it!
11. An Honor I'll Always Accept
54 linesAh, Spe's race should be ending just about now!
Are you sure you don't want to see the results?
Ehehe, makes sense. No one believes in Spe more than you! Or in our trainer!
Speaking of which, I heard you told Trainer not to see you off.
Mm-hm. Spe's race is more important than this. She's trying to become the best racer in Japan after all.
Well, that doesn't change the fact that we're excited to see where you go!
We'll all be cheering for you!
I know. I'll be sure to tell you all about the scenery I see when I get back.
Special Week wins! She's triumphed in her clash with Mejiro Bright, the top stayer in her class!
This is the true might of the Derby Umamusume! A fantastic prelude to her run at the spring Tenno Sho!
Mejiro Bright's run was amazing and all, but there's just no competing with the Derby Umamusume from the Golden Generation!
Now I can't wait to see how Special Week does in the spring Tenno Sho!
Bright...
Huff, huff... Phew...
By pumping the legs higher while running, we can better work the quadriceps... Yeah, this should be helpful for Bright's training.
If it isn't Ryan.
Huh? Bright? Our individual training schedules don't usually overlap like this.
I saw you heading out here, so I decided to follow you.
Would you... watch me while I train?
Huff... huff...
All right... Let's do one more lap!
Huff... huff...
Bright! You can't stop here! If you let a little run stop you, then...
Gasp... Hngh...
Yes... I'm so... very sorry...
Y-you have nothing to apologize for! I'm the one who pushed you too hard...
...I can't tell you how sorry I am. I was just so... frustrated seeing you lose.
I've been watching over you since we were little, so obviously you're special to me, but that's not all...
I think I was... seeing too much of myself in you.
You and I are really similar, Bright.
The final stretch is where I shine, just like you. But even though everyone expected great things from me, I never really entered the spotlight...
When I see you, I remember how it felt to watch Ines, Oguri, and McQueen cross the finish line ahead of me.
So seeing you go through the same thing hurts even more. I don't want you to feel the way I did!
Ryan...
A-ahaha... What am I even saying? You and I are different people.
If this keeps up, I'll just be pushing my own dreams onto you.
...Even if you did, I would be more than happy to accept those dreams.
Huh?
The fact that you see yourself in my running tells me that you truly care for me, that you truly wish for my success.
It would be my greatest honor to return such affection with an indisputable victory.
Naturally, as a Mejiro, I want to win the spring Tenno Sho again, but more than that, I wish to win this race for you, Ryan.
If that means carrying the weight of your dreams with me, I will gladly accept such a burden.
Bright...
Now then, I think I can get back to running. Don't hold back, Ryan. I want the toughest training regimen possible.
Only then will we grasp a second spring Tenno Sho victory.
...Yeah. You got it.
I'll throw everything I've got at you and more! We're gonna win this race!
12. A Special Race
84 linesHuff... huff...
Good job, Bright! You're running at just the right pace for 3,200 meters! Just try to remember this for the race!
Right! One more lap should help me remember!
That's the spirit! One more lap it is!
Surveilling the enemy, are we? They certainly look like they're ready for a fight.
Indeed. She may not look it, but Bright is incredibly strong-willed. Not to mention talented.
That being said, so is Special Week. All her hard work is bound to pay off on the track.
Speaking of Spe, where the heck is she?
She and Trainer should be having a meeting regarding the spring Tenno Sho about now.
So I need to think about pace and strategy?
Obviously, you should pay attention to your own stamina levels, but you should also be aware of how you can manipulate those of your rivals.
That sounds... really hard.
But I'll do it if it'll help me win! The bigger the race, the bigger the impression a good showing can make, right?
Knock, knock, knock...
Pardon the intrusion.
McQueen? Do you need Trainer for something?
This is less about what I need and more about what you two might need from me.
I understand that your meeting concerns your upcoming race, so I thought I might be of service.
True. You won the spring Tenno Sho not just once, but twice. We'd love your help.
All right, then I shall join you.
Wow, thank you so much!
Knockity, knock-knock! I'm coming in!
You're talking strategy, right? Anything I can do to help? Huh? What's McQueen doing here?
E-excuse m, wait, what? What are McQueen and Ticket doing here?
...Looks like I didn't need to come here after all.
Wh-whoa! It's a lot more crowded in here all of a sudden!
Phew... race developments, holding a good position... I feel like I've studied enough to fill a library!
But you know, after getting all that advice, I feel like I've got this in the bag!
Right! Just do your best!
We'll be cheering you on the day of, so bring home the gold!
Before I know it, the whole Team Sirius crew is in my office.
I remember being told I was a pillar from which our teammates reach for their dreams... But it seems like I'm not the only pillar on the team.
Ah, before I forget, Trainer! I have something to give you.
Here! I filled out that survey they gave us!
What survey?
Surely you remember the survey Tazuna told us to fill out...
Oh, right, that survey...
Averting their dumbfounded gazes out of embarrassment, I look down at the survey. Suddenly, my eyes focus in on one answer in particular.
"Which race means the most to you?"
A giant "THE JAPANESE DERBY!" fills up the entire answer space, which makes sense for Winning Ticket. But squeezed into the corner, in much smaller writing is...
The spring Tenno Sho?
You got a race other than the Derby on your mind? What, did ya eat something funny?
Ahaha, it's nothing like that.
The Derby will always be first place in my heart, but this survey's for the feature on Team Sirius, right?
As I was thinking of all my memories with the team, my head went DA-DIIING! Like a lightbulb went off!
The reason I knew about Team Sirius in the first place was because of McQueen's first spring Tenno Sho win!
My race?
Well, to be fair, I didn't know a lot about the team's history at first. I just thought it was a good race.
But when I found out about everything McQueen went through and how the future of the team depended on that race...
WAAAAAH! I'm so glad I saw such a passionate race with my own eyes!
I was the same way! That race convinced me to join the team!
I was so surprised to find out McQueen was the only member... But we've gained more and more racers ever since!
...The spring Tenno Sho means a lot to me too.
That race taught me just how much work goes into winning... And just how much happiness a win can bring.
...As for me, the spring Tenno Sho is another prize to chase.
I couldn't participate the first time due to an injury, and then my second chance ended with victory just out of my reach... To this day, I still hunger for that win.
Though the reasons differ, the spring Tenno Sho holds a special place in all their hearts.
It goes without saying that the same goes for me.
That race was Mejiro McQueen's main goal and my first G1 victory as a trainer.
It also marks the first time I was able to help an Umamusume achieve her dreams.
That race holds a lot of memories for me too.
So it wasn't just me... It's an irreplaceable race for all of us... WAAAAH!
Of course. You've been working so hard, I'd love to see it all pay off for you.
Ah, no, I didn't mean as a goal...
It just seems like this race holds a special place in all of your hearts.
So I want to make it a special memory for me too!
You see, Team Sirius is like a home away from home for me.
You've all done so much to help me, just like a real family would.
That's why I want to win the spring Tenno Sho, as a member of Team Sirius!
As a member of Team Sirius, huh?
Hehe, well, then I'll hold you to that promise. I look forward to seeing the shield that marked our team's rebirth.
Yeah, I want to see that shield again.
Me too, me too! So Spe... please win this!
...You sure 'bout this, Spe?
Yeah! Leave it to me!
Trainer, perhaps you would like to say a few words of encouragement as well?
Oh yeah! I promise I'll win the spring Tenno Sho, Trainer!
Special Week gazes at me with a strong, almost gallant gaze. Those eyes of hers haven't changed since she first came here from Hokkaido.
Looking at her now, I can confidently say that she'll someday be the best racer in Japan.
Win this for us, Spe!
Ehehe! Okay!

81 linesSpecial Week has vowed to bring the spring shield of the Tenno Sho back to Team Sirius.
And as if to affirm that promise, she begins to work even harder during our training sessions.
At first, this was just another objective I set for her, another goal to work towards.
But after hearing how much this race means to her teammates, this race has taken on a whole new meaning for Special Week. She's determined to snag the shield and make this a race we won't forget.
So we keep on training until at long last...
We've been blessed with clear skies here today at Kyoto Racecourse. Under the shining sun, twelve Umamusume will vie for the glory of the spring shield.
And of course, the name on everyone's lips is last year's champion, Mejiro Bright!
But that doesn't mean we're ignoring her challengers, like the Kikuka Sho Umamusume Seiun Sky and the Derby Umamusume Special Week!
Just imagining the showdown these three are about to show us has the audience on the edge of their seats!
Spe, good luck out there! Show us a spring Tenno Sho as inspiring as McQueen's!
I'm planning on conquering this race myself someday, so run like I'm right on your heels!
Okay, I'll give you a race worth watching!
Ding! ♪
Huh? That your phone?
Ah, it's a message from Suzuka!
Let's see... "I've got the livestream going over here. Good luck, Spee." Spee?
It's late over there, so she must've mistyped.
Hehe, I'm sure she's tired, but she's still watching regardless. That just shows how much she cares.
And she's not the only one cheering for you!
Good luck, Special Week!
We know you'll be leading the pack by the end!
If you run anything like you did at practice, you'll win. All you need now is confidence.
Now go out there and get that shield!
Right! With my moms' dream, my own dream, and Team Sirius on my side, there's no way I can lose!
Long time, no see. Last time we ran together was the Kikuka Sho, right?
Sei...
I won that race, but who knows what'll happen today.
...Especially considering the look in your eye has changed.
Yup! I've got lots of hopes and dreams riding on today.
I could say the very same thing.
No matter the opponent, I have focused only on achieving what I must... I thought that was more than enough.
However, Seiun Sky, you have bested me before. As have you, Special Week, in our last race.
I understand now that you two have skills worthy of the Golden Generation title. But know that I will emerge from this race triumphant!
I dunno, I'll be trying pretty hard myself... But I suppose we'll find out during the race.
Yeah! Let's give this race our all!
I would expect nothing less!
All righty then, shall we?
As we speak, twelve contenders are bracing themselves for the grueling 3,200-meter battle ahead!
Will the reigning champion come away with another victory? Or will it be one of the two challengers from the Golden Generation?!
With each racer now in the starting gate, the spring Tenno Sho... begins!
Bright...
Special Week gave a truly remarkable performance, no? The strength of her final spurt, the persistence to stay in the front...
I used every ounce of strength I had for this race. And yet, I still... Sniff... I still couldn't catch up!
You and I really are alike, Bright... Right down to how bitter defeat tastes to us.
But you know... There will be other races. You can't give up, not now, not ever.
We'll keep racing... together.
Sniff... Uwaaah! Ryaaan!
Hehe... You did your best, Bright.
Next will be the winning team photo! Special Week, please take your place in the center.
R-right!
What, you nervous or something? C'mon, this photo'll last forever, so ya gotta strike a cool pose!
That's right! Just remember you're a G1 champ!
I know that, it's just... I can feel all their eyes on me. What if I mess up?
Hold your head high. Just approach this photo with the same attitude you had for this race.
Yeah, you were so cool out there!
You know... I feel like I took a really big step today.
Towards being the best racer in Japan?
Yeah. With the Derby, I was really just focused on how much I wanted to win. I wasn't thinking about anybody else.
I felt just as motivated going into this race, but... out on the track, I heard something.
In that final straightaway, just when I needed it the most, I heard all of you cheering for me.
And then, an image popped into my head. I could see all of you, smiling and celebrating my win!
I realized I wasn't alone, not on the track or after the race. And that just made me feel... really good.
It's kinda hard to explain, but something tells me that if I want to be the best in Japan, I need to remember that feeling.
So if I want to make my dream come true, if I really want to be the best, I need to keep running like I did today!
Looking at Special Week now, I remember the young Umamusume who came to Tokyo with her head in the clouds.
Her dream, which once sounded so far away, is starting to sound more and more doable.
Keep this up, and you'll be the best racer in Japan in no time!
Yeah!
Excuse me, but could we have the team members squeeze in a bit more? You're out of frame!
Okay, Spe! Face the camera and show it your patented "Best Racer in Japan" pose!
P-pose?! L-like... what?!
Okay, here we go! Three, two, one, cheeeeese!
Best in Japan, here I cooome!
Special Week declares her dream to the heavens.
As if in response, the roar of the crowd's cheers crashes down on us, engulfing the racer so determined to make them proud.
The October breeze blows through France.

Or will it be France's pride and joy, Montjeu?!
