1. A Giant Goddess
57 linesWhoosh...
It's been three days since I was left on this deserted island. What little provisions I brought along have long since run out, and sadly, my phone still shows no signal.
(I can't... go on...)
Some break this turned out to be. I never should've signed up for that island tour. Or at the very least, I should've memorized when the return boat was leaving.
But I can't turn back time. This is my reality. I close my eyes as my heart fills with regret. I'll never be able to help Umamusume reach their full potential now...
Heeey! You okaaay?
The sound of someone's voice brings me back to this mortal plane. I don't recognize them, but whoever it is, their voice is so soothing and warm.
You must've had it pretty rough, huh? Well, you don't have to worry anymore. Here, drink up. ☆
The kind stranger helps me sit up and puts a cup to my lips. This benevolent voice, this sense of security, this strong, sturdy embrace... Surely, I've come across...
(A goddess...)
After I finish up the water, those warm hands next bring me a bowl of miso soup. As I eagerly devour the delicious soup, my once-hazy consciousness begins to come back.
And it turns out my "goddess" is actually Hishi Akebono.
Ahaha, look at you gobble it up. I'm glad I brought some homemade miso soup with me.
But what a surprise this was. I never thought I'd find a trainer from school collapsed on the beach.
I contacted the return ferry by radio just now, so don't worry. We'll both be back home in no time. ☆
This isn't the first time I've seen that friendly smile. Suddenly, I'm taken back to the recent Tracen Meet, where students who have yet to debut compete...
Guess what, everybody! As of this morning, I'm officially over 180 centimeters tall!
WOOOO!
To celebrate, I'm going to give this race my aaall!
Each racer has entered their gate. The Tracen Meet 1,200-meter turf race... begins!
Huff, huff, huff!
Hishi Akebono just keeps growing more and more. She's got to be the biggest Umamusume at Tracen now, right?
I believe so. And she knows how to use that big body of hers in races... I've heard lots of trainers have their eyes on her.
Graaaaah!
Passing the finish line by a huge margin, it's Hishi Akebono! She's taken first place in today's race!
I still remember the way she blew away the competition with her speed and strength. But... what's she doing here?
Why, gathering kombu seaweed, silly! I'm buddies with the old fisherman, so he let me hitch a ride with him.
You see, the kombu seaweed here is filled with lots and lots of minerals, making it perfect for buono dashi stock!
Speaking of food, you must be starving. Why don't I throw something together for you real quick?
Wait, here?!

Like a master camper, Hishi Akebono sets up her pot in a flash. She goes to light the fire...
Ow, hot, hot! Ahaha... Starting a fire never gets any easier, huh... Ah, a crab!
Before I know it, she's got a mountain of seafood before her, which she likewise prepares in the blink of an eye.
Mmm! Now that smells good! Too bad I didn't bring any udon noodles to sop up the extra broth!
And just like that, before us sits a delicious-looking seafood hot pot.
All right, eat up! ☆ I'm sure it tastes extra buono.
So... so gooood!
Ahaha, happy to hear it!
I scarf down the hot pot as if in a trance. When I finally look up from my bowl, I see Hishi Akebono beaming as she watches me eat.
Is it buono?
Super buono!
Ehehe... I can tell from your face. I love watching people enjoy my food. If only I could find a trainer who understands that...
But when I explain that to the ones scouting me, they all look at me like I have three heads.
And because of that, I still don't have a trainer...
Ah, wait a minute! What about you? Would you like to be my trainer?

I-I'm right behind you...
A few days earlier...
Hey Trainer, are you free this weekend? I want to make a hot pot sumo wrestlers eat called chanko, and I need ingredients.
I've always wanted to gather ingredients together with my trainer.
At most, I figured we would go to her favorite fish and vegetable stalls, but that notion was quickly dashed when we headed into the mountains to collect mushrooms.
Okay, that should do it. Next stop is the sea!
Our basket is overflowing with mushrooms after traversing five whole mountains. I try to lift it up, but...
(It won't budge!)
Ahaha! With all those mushrooms, it's gonna be real heavy! Just leave that basket to me.

She lifts the basket as if it were nothing and slips her arms into the backpack straps. With the basket securely resting against her back, she walks off with a smile.

Catching people's attention everywhere we go, we continue to gather ingredients. Seeing our haul and feeling my body aching, I start to suggest we head back, when...
All right, next stop is the butcher!
There's still more?!
Yup! There's this butcher I like that sells the most scrumptious ground chicken. We can't have our hot pot without that!
It's a tad far from here, but the view on the way is totally worth it! Come on, let's gooo!
I watch her run off, her imposing silhouette getting smaller and smaller. We've probably walked several dozen kilometers today, yet she shows no signs of fatigue.
(She's one tough Umamusume!)
After over an hour on the train, we finally arrive in a deceptively peaceful small rural town. If only I knew of the disaster to come!
Mmm! That country air smells so good! W-wait, is that a boar?!
Oink! Oink!
Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp!
Eep! Wh-wh-whoa! Trainer, run away!

Are you okay, Trainer?!
Thankfully, I'm not hurt, but all the mushrooms and fish Hishi Akebono worked so hard to get are floating away...

Whenever people taste their food, a big smile follows each bite. It's absolutely amazing.
Seeing that, I could feel this desire well up inside me. I wanna be a racer that makes people smile too!
That story didn't end how I expected it to. Wouldn't it be easier for her to bring people joy through her cooking?

Huh?
Curious, I ask her why she would enter Tracen instead of a culinary school.
How do I put this... Hmmm, you see...
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a big pot of chanko!
Uh... what?
My apparent confusion encourages Hishi Akebono to continue her story, and she tells me of a television special she witnessed as a child.
Today we'd like to highlight the hot pot sumo wrestlers often eat, chanko. Our guests today are former sumo wrestlers who made this dish regularly.
Chanko is something we wrestlers eat every day as a group. It fills our bellies while also giving us the energy needed to grow stronger.
But it's especially important after a hard-fought match. A satisfying meal enjoyed while surrounded by friends... Nothing gets you more ready to keep working hard than that.

Realizing that, I gave up on literally becoming a pot of chanko.
That makes sense... I think?
But even if I knew I couldn't actually be a hot pot, that special still stuck with me. I read books on the subject, made my own recipes...
And then one day, I heard something wonderful while watching a post-match interview on TV.
He was strong, all right, too strong. I can tell now that I wasn't ready for this fight, but... I still gave it everything I've got!
Mama, why is the sumo wrestler smiling? He lost, didn't he? He was crying just before...
Well... I'm sure he's proud of himself and what he managed to do.
What do you mean?
Do you remember what he said? He gave this fight everything he's got. Going up against a big, strong fighter is a lot harder than it sounds.
But he still did it. I'm sure he's very, very happy.
I get it... He's probably got a warm, full feeling in his tummy. That's... kinda like what happens when they eat chanko!

I think you're already doing that.
Am I? ...I see. So that's how you see me.
Ehehe... Sounds like you're the dashi stock to my hot pot!
The what now?
The dashi stock! The very foundation of any hot pot!
In other words, I can't be a pot of chanko without you!
Hishi Akebono certainly has a unique way of expressing it, but I can tell from her smile that she trusts me with all her heart.
