Chapter 5: Scenery
13 scenes, 791 lines
1. Breathless Joy
58 linesJanuary this year is especially cold... Yet despite the weather, I'm out on the training track.
All around me are young racers preparing to start their shot at the Classics this spring.
Only a few select racers qualify for the Classics! If you want in, you gotta show me you got what it takes!
Yes, sir!
Maaan, everyone sure is pumped up.
You can only attempt the Classic Races once in your career. If you don't qualify, that's it.
Yes, and that's why hundreds, if not thousands of racers each year dream of winning the Classics.
And after aaall that training, some of us still go and hog all the glory, eh?
...Don't look at me like that.
As if you can talk. You'd have plenty of honors yourself if you took your races seriously.
Hey, hey, who says I'm not takin' 'em seriously?! Don't you worry, I'm planning on winning one or two of those classic races!
Wooooo!
Oh yeah, hear that? That's the sound of my adoring fans awaiting my rise to glory!
What are those cheers for? It sounds like there's some sort of commotion going on.
DON'T IGNORE ME!
Huff... huff... huff...
That's another personal record!
I'd heard there was a promising rookie among the racers this year, but she's way beyond what I expected.
That's what I like to see from you, Suzuka. That speed of yours is remarkable.
Once you've run your debut race, we'll use that experience to develop a running style that makes use of your unique strengths.
Okay, sounds good.
All that hubbub for Suzuka, huh?
You know her?
What, you don't? She and her crazy legs have been all the rage ever since she entered the academy.
So her debut is finally approaching... I can't wait to see what she can do.
I don't hear the name Silence Suzuka again until several weeks later at the Kyoto Racecourse.
The press really came out in droves for this race. Are you also here for Silence Suzuka's debut?
You bet! I can't wait to see her running. I even brought four cameramen to fully capture it!
Sounds like today is Silence Suzuka's debut race.
Just as I begin to wonder myself what sort of run could inspire so many rumors, I hear footsteps approach me from behind.
You there. Aren't you Team Sirius's trainer?
You're...
I am Air Groove, vice president of the student council. But I'm sure you've heard of me.
Like any other school, Tracen Academy has its own student council, which offers support to the school in ways only students can.
Perhaps surprisingly, Narita Brian is also an officer in the student council, a subject her teammates love to tease her about.
I don't believe any members of Team Sirius are participating in this race... Could it be you're here for Suzuka?
Kind of. I was in the area and figured I'd check out some races. I didn't realize Suzuka would be here, though. Did you come for her debut?
Suzuka and I have known each other for quite some time. What's more, the student council has got their eye on her.
Oh, really?
Indeed. It seems the president has high hopes for her.
The president... You mean Symboli Rudolf? Now I'm really excited to see her in action.
Little did I know just how thrilling her race would be...
Silence Suzuka begins rounding the final corner, still in the lead!
And look how far she's pulled ahead! But she's still going faster as she enters the homestretch!
Two hundred meters left! Silence Suzuka speeds up even more!
Despite staying in the lead for the entire race, Silence Suzuka shows no signs of fatigue. Instead, she leaves the pack farther and farther behind...
This speed! She's ahead by five lengths, no, six! Just how fast can she go?!
Silence Suzuka crosses the finish line! Her debut race ends in a flawless victory!
She's fast. Surprisingly fast. But more than that...
Yeah! So fast! But more than that...
She looks like she's having so much fun!
Wooooo!
2. My Race
47 linesWith hope in my heart, I entered the school gates for the very first time... That was the very beginning.
I won my debut race, taking another step forward...
My racing career has begun, and so has my race towards my dream.
"Middle Distance Basics Volume One..." "The Secret to Racing and Pacing..."
Oh? Doing some studying, Suzuka? You don't usually come to the library.
Fukukitaru... That's right, my trainer asked me to study the different ways races can unfold.
Oh yeah, our teacher mentioned that your running strategy should change based on the distance and track condition, right?
Ah, in that case, do you want me to give you a reading?! I can tell you the perfect strategy for you!
Th-that's okay. I think my trainer and I have it handled.
Judging by your sudden interest in the library, is it safe to assume your next race has been decided?
Air Groove... Yes, my next race is the Yayoi Sho. I've got less than a month.
Well, you did debut late. If you're going to take on the Classics, your schedule is going to be packed.
But why would that worry you? You finished your last race in the lead by seven lengths.
Did you watch my debut race? Thank you for your support.
Huuuh?! You went to cheer on Suzuka?! You should've told me, I would've come along!
I-I was simply there to observe her!
More importantly, you need to prepare for the road ahead of you. Winning consecutive races is no easy task.
I know. That's why I'm here at the library.
What's more, I'll do whatever it takes to see that scenery...
Huff... puff...
1,000 meters in 58.5 seconds... You're still going too fast.
...Understood.
The Yayoi Sho is 2,000 meters, so you need to conserve your stamina for the homestretch. Now do another lap, this time with your pace in mind.
Your talents are some of the best I've ever seen. With the proper preparations, I have no doubt you'll seize victory after victory.
Yes, ma'am! I'll do my best!
I must pay attention to the movement of those around me and determine an advantageous position. The goal is to avoid any loss of momentum or positioning.
With this strategy, I'll be the first past the finish line every time. Getting there first is what matters. Nothing else.
Surely... if I follow this method, I will see the scenery I seek.
She's done it! She's won by three whole lengths! The Yayoi Sho is hers!
After a late start, Silence Suzuka crosses the finish line in eighth place! She was a favorite to win, but perhaps her inexperience cost her.
...
(My pace, my position, the track conditions, the weather, and every move made around me...)
(There's so much I have to keep in mind while racing.)
Just... one more lap!
(The sound of my cleats hitting the ground... a pleasant breeze through my hair... and no one in my path.)
(My head feels so clear here. If I could, I would run like this forever.)
Huff... Huff...
(But... this running style won't get me to the scenery I...)
AN UMAMUSUME!
Eep! Wh-what?
Woooow! A real-life Umamusume!
U-um... Aren't you an Umamusume as well?
Well, yeah, but outside of looking in a mirror, you're the first one I've ever seen!
Oh! And, and! You look so glamorous when you're runn'n! Like, sooo pretty!
Ah! I-I-I'm sorry! I was staring, wasn't I?
Anyway, I just transferred to Tracen Academy today! The name's Special Week!
3. Two Dreamers
58 linesAfter classes, I'm on my way to the training track when I see a familiar Umamusume accompanied by an unfamiliar one.
Whoooa! Uwaaah!
That building contains both the musical department and home ec classrooms. Beyond that is the indoor pool.
Hokkaido was big, but I've never seen a school this huge before! I'm sure I'll get lost at least once... no, maybe five times...
Hm? Aren't you Team Sirius's trainer?
Hello there. It's nice to know you've heard of me.
A trainer?
Right. In order to run in the Twinkle Series, you must belong to a team run by a trainer.
This trainer manages Team Sirius, which has produced many G1 race winners.
S-so you're like some kinda master! Hello! I'm Special Week!
I wouldn't call myself that... But anyway, what are you two doing?
You see, I just transferred here from Hokkaido. Suzuka was giving me a tour of the campus.
But getting here's not enough to start running races, huh? I didn't realize I'd have to get accepted to a team too...
In that case, I wanna join Suzuka's team! That way I can watch her racin' up close and personal!
Um... You have to be scouted to join a team. There's no guarantee you'll get into the team you want...
Wooow! Scouted?! Just like a supermodel! Then I'll just have to try super-duper hard!
Well, you've got energy on your side, at least.
Anyway, I think we should get going.
Okay, see you around.
After dominating in her debut race, Silence Suzuka finished in eighth at the Yayoi Sho... I would love to ask her what happened, but...
That's not my place.
Several days later, I stop by the tryouts to scope out potential talent. While there, I recognize someone in the audience.
Oh, are you here to watch the tryouts?
You're the trainer from Team Sirius. That's right, I'm here to watch Special Week.
What a surprise this is. She just transferred, so I didn't expect to see her on the roster.
New students usually learn the basics of running and racing before determining the right time for them to tryout.
Sounds like she really wants to be on your team.
It certainly seems that way... But she also has a dream of her own.
She wants to run in the Twinkle Series and become the best racer in all of Japan.
In all of Japan, huh?
I've only just met her, but I can already tell that Special Week faces her dreams, her emotions... everything head on.
As she says this, something in Silence Suzuka's expression looks... almost sad. I marvel at how different her face is now compared to her debut.
You sound almost jealous there.
We've reached the third race of today's tryouts. Each racer has taken their place in the gate.
Ah... It's starting.
Here comes number six, Special Week! She makes up for her late start with an early spurt as she enters the third corner.
She's closing in! Closer! Closer... she's taken the lead!
Special Week! She just might...
For a new transfer, she's got guts! I can't even tell she's new. And that expression...
Not just her expression... Her running form itself seems to embody her dreams of coming to Tokyo and becoming the best in Japan. However...
Wh-what's this? Special Week has stopped in her tracks and is now waving at someone!
I did it, Suzukaaa! I got first place!
Uh-oh! Sounds like she thinks she crossed the finish line! Now the rest of the pack is passing her in quick succession!
Wh-what?!
Um, I'll be training with you from now on, the name's Special Week! Thank you for the opportunity!
Whooooa! We got a new member?! Special Week, can I call you Spe?! Nice to meetcha!
To be honest, I was hoping to get into Suzuka's team, but well, I kinda messed up in the tryouts...
But when Team Sirius' trainer scouted me, I remembered hearing your team was really great too, so I happily accepted!
Ohooo... So we're not good enough to be your first choice, huh?
Huh?! N-no, it's not like that! Although Suzuka's team definitely was my first choice!
Well, tough toenails, 'cause you're stuck with us now! We'll turn you into the most miserable racer in Japan!
Whaaaaat?!
C'mon! The hell you waitin' for?! If you wanna be the best in Japan, you better start runnin'!
O-okaaaay!
Her skills still need refining, but her earnest desire to be the best has really made an impression on me.
I realize now that I want to help Special Week achieve her dreams.
4. Encroaching Fog
49 lines(I need to keep track of the other racers and save my strength for the final leg of the race.)
(This strategy will allow me to make use of my speed while also ensuring a higher chance at victory. I'm certain that this is the correct path for me... but...)
("You sound almost jealous there.")
(Why won't the words of Team Sirius's trainer leave my head?)
C'mon! The hell you waitin' for?! If you wanna be the best in Japan, you better start runnin'!
O-okaaaay!
(I thought I was facing my dreams head-on...)
(But then... why does it feel like my view's grown foggy?)
...
One more lap!
Congratulations on your win today! That's two in a row! Two!
Um, thank you, but... you've been congratulating me all day...
And I'll congratulate you a billion times more! You were just that amazing!
Especially in the homestretch! You broke from the pack like peeeew! It must feel so good to leave everyone behind like that!
I'm still working on my pace and stuff, so I'm not sure how you do it. I'll just have to practice more!
Um... Suzuka? You seem pretty sad for someone who just won a race...
Huh? Ah, no, I'm very happy I won.
But what about you, Special Week? Team Sirius seems like a very... lively team.
Yeah, they're all super fun and kind! They're even helping me figure out my own style.
Every once in a while, Gold Ship will force me to do some weird training, but... overall, I'm super happy I joined their team!
...That's good.
Ehehe, yep! This team'll take me all the way to being the best racer in all of Japan!
Hey, Suzuka, you're spacing out again.
Huh?! Ah, sorry.
Something on your mind? You're not acting like someone who just won twice in a row.
I just... don't understand.
I won my last race, but the scenery in front of me felt off somehow...
...
Perhaps you could use a break. Knowledge is power, but you can't use that power if you're stressed.
Thank you, but the Derby is coming up next. I don't have time to relax.
I have to keep winning...
Huff, huff... Phew...
Looks like you've got the pacing down for a 2,400-meter race! I noticed you still have stamina to burn.
You've got what it takes to dominate all the Classic races. Win and make your dreams come true!
Yes, ma'am!
Spe! What's your dream again?!
To become... the best racer in Japaaan!
That's right! Now show me what the best in Japan is made of! No pain, no gain!
Okaaaay!
Wait a minute, why aren't you training?!
(...I don't have time to get distracted. I have to make my dreams come true!)
Raaaaah!
Her speed is the real deal! And she takes the Derby crown with a runaway finish!
Huff... Huff...
The fan favorite Silence Suzuka struggled today, coming in at ninth place!
...Ngh!
5. The Way You Want
63 linesSeveral days after the Japanese Derby...
Okay, Spe. That's it for today's training.
Huh?! Whoa, is it that late already?!
Special Week's been easily distracted lately. Curious, I look in the direction she was staring.
Huff, huff... One more!
You're worried about her, aren't you?
Yeah. she's working so hard for her next race, and that's great and all... but...
She looks like she's being too hard on herself...
Huh? You think so too?
Yeah, in all her recent races, she's seemed so... constrained. I don't think she's having fun out there.
U-um... Could I stick around for a little longer? I wanna join Suzuka for her training!
Approaching a racer from another team might be overstepping, but... I'm honestly feeling worried about her too.
I'll go with you. Come on, let's go.
Phew! Thanks for partner running with me!
Sorry to bother you out of nowhere.
No, it was actually very helpful.
We may be on different teams, but I'm glad we can still run together if we happen to stay behind after classes. Ehehe!
Um, Suzuka, do you remember the first time we met? You know, how I screamed just seeing you run?
At the time, I was actually really nervous about having left Hokkaido. I started wondering if I could truly make it here, to be honest.
Just then, I saw you running with a smile on your face, and all my fears were blown away! I remember thinking Tracen must be super fun!
But recently, I've noticed that you... don't smile as much as before.
I felt the same way at your debut race. You looked so delighted crossing the finish line. What happened?
I don't understand it myself. I know for a fact that I'm working hard towards my dream.
And yet, no matter how much I chase after it, my dream feels further and further away.
I've loved running ever since I was little... The sound of my feet hitting the ground, the wind in my face...
I've never forgotten that sensation... Even now, I'm still chasing it.
Special Week, you said I blew you away with my smile, but I could say the same to you.
You're the one who's facing your dreams head-on. It's like you're a pure, shining light, whereas I'm... I'm just...
Too much practice can lead to racers being overly hard on themselves.
But that's also a sign of just how serious she is. If she's that passionate about running, then there must be some way to funnel that passion...
Why don't you try running the way you want to run?
What... do you mean?
This probably sounds strange coming from a trainer, but try running a lap without thinking about winning strategies or anything else.
Forget about pace for once. It's okay if you run out of stamina partway through. So for now, just run the way you want.
Can I really do that? Just run the way I want?
C'mon, Suzuka! Let's get running! No more thinking, just whooshing ahead like vwooooom!
All right. I'll give it a shot.
(The breeze feels so nice. The sound of my cleats hitting the ground is so comforting... There's no other sounds to distract me, no one blocking my line of sight...)
(All I'm doing is running, but compared to my races...)
(The view before me is so... beautiful.)
Waaah! Suzuka's so fast!
More. I want to see more.
Whoa! She's speeding up even more!
Great running, you two. So, how did that feel?
S-see for yourself. We're both... absolutely drenched.
You're right, but, well...
I finally saw it. It was only a glimpse... but I saw the scenery I'm after.
Sounds like you really like to run.
What?
Running wild just gave you a glimpse of what you're running for, right?
Your dream isn't all about victory. If you can find joy in running, I think you'll start to see it.
Finding joy... will lead me to my dream?
Run how you want to run, Suzuka!
Hehe... All right!
Several days later...
Okaaay! Another day of working towards being the best racer in Japan! We're off to the bamboo grove to collect as many bamboo shoots as we can!
How's that supposed to help me?!
Excuse me.
H-huh? Suzuka?
What's up? Your team should be starting their practice soon.
6. The Dream Team
54 linesThat should do it. I hope you'll take good care of Suzuka.
Of course. I'll give her all the support she needs.
I apologize for such a sudden request. I'll never forget the kindness you've shown me. Thank you so much.
I certainly wanted to pursue our dreams together, but these things happen. If this is what you want, then that's the end of it. I shall respect your decision.
As long as your passion remains, you'll be victorious! Now, make your dreams come true with Team Sirius!
Whoooaaa! It's SUPER nice to meet you too! You must be pretty happy, Spe! You're finally on the same team!
Ehehe... I mean, I am excited, but now that you say it out loud, it's kind of embarrassing...
Now that you're all introduced, let's see how you run. Show us a lap like it's a real race.
But don't think too hard about it. Just do what we did before, run how you want.
Wow! That speed!
And she's still accelerating! Is she gonna cross the finish line like that?!
Silence Suzuka runs with such speed that it takes everyone's breath away.
Hahaha... Keeping that speed up the whole lap would really be something.
You flew off like a rocket there. You okay?
I-I'm fine... My pace was terrible, and my times were probably all over the place, but...
It felt... so good. So fun.
Even as she struggles to catch her breath, Silence Suzuka's expression is one of pure satisfaction. She's beaming with joy.
Just watching you is fun. It seriously looked like you might cross the finish line at full speed.
Anyway, now we're one step closer to finding your running style! One more lap!
Okay!
I happened to catch a bit of your training today. You were a completely different person from the girl locking herself in the library.
Wasn't it just awful? I wasn't paying attention to my pace or anything. I just ran to my heart's content.
I swear... If you know how bad it looks, why are you all smiles?
I mean, it's not like I'm doing it on purpose... Hehe.
All that studying for nothing... Yet for some reason, the scenery I seek has never been more clear to me.
While your running is less refined, I will admit that I felt more threatened watching you this time.
Although that doesn't mean I'm planning to lose.
It's coming up, isn't it? The day we finally compete.
Leading the pack is Silence Suzuka! What a runaway! She's entered the homestretch with a substantial lead!
She's passed the two-hundred-meter mark in a flash! BUT WAIT! Last year's champion and the Empress Air Groove have caught up!
The two surge past Suzuka! They're going head-to-head! Who will come out on top?!
From the outside by a hair, it's Air Groooove! Air Groove has taken first place in this G1 race!
Congrats on your first race with your new team.
It would've been better if I could've stayed in the lead the whole time. Too bad I got sixth.
But you looked like you were having fun out there. Heck, you're still smiling.
Hehe.
This running style is harder to win with, but the view from the front is so beautiful...
I'm sure you'll get an even prettier view going forward. You're just brimming with passion, after all.
And I'll be right there alongside you. I can't wait to see the day you finally catch up to the scenery in your head.
When I finally catch up to the scenery in my head...
Perhaps that moment is the scenery you want to see, Trainer.
Yeah, I can't really picture it right now, but...
I can already tell it's going to be quite a sight.
I'll do whatever I can to make it happen.
7. A Fantastical View
75 linesThere's a ramp before the finish line, so before your next race, you should add some leg strength exercises to your training.
Mhm... good call!
My, what excellent advice, Suzuka.
Oh, Air Groove. Yes, all that studying actually paid off.
But I'll never force myself into a box again. I've learned my lesson.
Everyone has up and downs in their lives. Those experiences are what make you who you are today.
True... I'm sure there will be many more lessons to come, and I'll take them all to heart.
Then, someday, I'll pay you back for our last race.
Heh. Don't you think for a second that I'll make it easy for you.
Wooow, you guys really sound like rivals! I hope I can find one or two once I debut...
They really do help us grow into better racers... I'm sure you'll meet someone wonderful, as long as you put in the effort.
Yeah! I'll start by winning my debut race! Suzuka, tell me more about running strategies!
Someone's blasted to the front of the pack! It's Special Week! Special Week's lead is growing by the second!
ALL RIIIGHT! That's it! Make 'em eat your dust!
Special Week finishes in first place! She's won her debut race!
OH YEAH! Way to go, Spe! Once we get back to campus, it's PARTY TIME!
Oooooh! That was the best debut everrr! Good for you, Speeee!
The story of the greatest racer in Japan has just begun.
It sure has.
Ehehe!
...Hehe.
Phew... That party wiped me out way more than the race for some reason.
If Gold Ship finds out I slipped away, there's no telling what she'll make me do...
I wonder if we'll have a party like this once I win a race as well.
Of course we will! I'll make tons of extra buttery baked potatoes! You're the reason I won this race, so I gotta pay you back somehow!
Oh come on, I didn't do anything special.
But you did! You taught me all sorts of stuff about running, helped me around the school, and most of all...
If I hadn't seen you run with a big smile on your face, I would never have had the courage to chase my dreams!
I could say the same thing to you. After watching you chase your dreams so wholeheartedly, I wanted to do the same.
Spe, your straightforward emotions helped me take that vital first step.
Ehehe... Suzuka, I promise I'll become the best racer in all of Japan!
When I do, I hope I make you, my mom in Hokkaido, and Trainer very, very proud!
All right. As for me, I swear I'll never stop chasing the scenery I seek, no matter what.
It's a promise then! We'll both make our dreams come true.
Yes... I swear it.
By the way, Suzuka... Is it just me, or did you call me Spe before?
Huh? Um... Did I call you something different?
You did! Don't you dare play dumb with me! Do it again! Call me Spe again!
Ehehe, oh, you...
Who's the fav for today's race... Oh, it's Silence Suzuka!
The girl who runs like a runaway train? She hasn't done anything recently that would warrant being the favorite...
True, but I do want to see her win. Watching her run is seriously addicting!
Phew...
Feeling confident? I don't detect any nervousness from you.
I feel ready to take on the world. All thanks to you, my teammates, and especially Spe.
You can do it, Suzuka! I'll be in the front row cheering you on!
All right, and I'll be sure to answer those cheers with a win.
Your performance during training has stabilized, so now all you have to do is run with all you've got.
Take in that beautiful scenery from the front!
Okay! Make sure you take in today's view too!
Silence Suzuka takes her place in the outer post of the gate.
The finish line lies 1,800 meters from the gate. Just who will get there first? Aaand... they're off!
Knock, knock, knock.
Trainer, can we talk?
What is it? Unless it's urgent, I'd rather you rest after such a big race.
I wouldn't say it's urgent, but there is something I wanted to say as soon as possible.
I realized something after today's race. I don't think I've ever actually thanked you.
Thanked me? For what?
Even though I was on a different team, you still approached me like I was one of your trainees.
And when I asked to move to your team, you accepted my request without a single complaint.
That's nothing special... In fact, I was worried I might be overstepping.
Hehe...
After joining Team Sirius and getting to know my new teammates, I can tell what sort of person you are.
You wholeheartedly believe in us all and do everything you can to support us.
That's why I want to give you a proper thank-you, but... could you wait just a little longer?
You really don't need to...
No, I want to show my gratitude.
And I'll do it by running with you towards that beautiful scenery.
As she speaks, Silence Suzuka's expression is soft and filled with the same joy she has while running.
Well, if it's a thank-you like that, I suppose I can accept it.
We'd better keep our eyes on the scenery ahead!
Right!
She's finally snatched her first victory as a member of Team Sirius.
As her skills and heart soar upward, I can't help but wonder what sort of views she'll show me in the future.
Whatever they look like, I'm sure they'll be joyous and fantastical.
8. An Unstoppable Dream
48 linesAfter claiming her first win as part of Team Sirius, Silence Suzuka's conquest begins...
She's at it again! Silence Suzuka's unstoppable! The rest of the pack can't catch up!
Farther, farther, and farther still! With runaway speed, Silence Suzuka nabs her second graded race win in a row!
Huff... puff... Phew...
Huff, huff... Wheeze!
Wheeze! ... I can't keep up with that speed of yours!
But what can I do? My normal pace is too slow, and there's no way I can catch up at the end... Hnnngh!
One more! One more race! Come on, Suzuka, Spe! Let's gooo!
All right, fine by me.
Whaaat?! Can't we at least take a five-minute break?!
She flies down the course right from the start, and then she accelerates at the end too! What an amazing racer, that Silence Suzuka!
Yeah, I can't wait to see what she'll bring to her next race!
Well, well, well, Suzuka's really made a name for herself.
Her winning streak certainly is newsworthy, but her running style itself seems to be the bigger topic.
Her front running?
Yes... Although her front running isn't like normal front running. It's something all her own.
Just as people's personalities differ, so too does the running of Umamusume.
I utilize my stamina to make a move quickly. I can go from fifth place to first in an instant.
As for Brian, she can maintain her speed for a long period of time. She conserves her strength until the homestretch, when she lets loose an explosion of speed.
And Rice... She uses her innate stamina in a long spurt to completely dominate her opponents.
All of us took time to determine our own strengths and find a running strategy that utilizes them the best.
Conversely, Suzuka's running is more of an ideal than a strategy, one most of us have written off as impossible.
Jetting out of the starting gate and then racing down the course unrivaled does sound like a dream.
Yeah, and Suzuka's actually making that dream a reality.
I can only hope that we keep seeing that running of hers. I love watching her make the impossible possible.
Her running doesn't just mesmerize fans, but racers too.
The scenery she seeks is dreamed of by all Umamusume, and they want to see her achieve her goal as much as she does.
Trainer, I hope I'm not intruding.
What's wrong? Did you forget something?
No. I was just wondering if my next race has been decided.
Knowing my next race will give me a goal to work towards in training, and um... I'm sure there are other advantages.
Silence Suzuka isn't usually the one to bring up her next race.
Perhaps this is another sign of her growth.
I was thinking we could aim for the Kinko Sho next.
The Kinko Sho... I believe that one's 2,000 meters.
Yup. I understand if that distance worries you, considering you run your races at full speed.
But that doesn't mean medium-distance is impossible. Personally, I think you can handle it.
If you believe in me that strongly, how could I ever be worried?
Besides, I'm curious to see how far my running style can take me, and this could be my chance to find out.
Yeah, you've been making good progress in training already. Trying new things will only help you grow more!
If you can do well in the Kinko Sho, you might even be able to take on the Takarazuka Kinen or the autumn Tenno Sho!
G1 races...
Exciting, right? But that means your training will be that much more intense.
Hehe... That's fine by me.
Trainer, I want to explore my current style as much as I can.
Something tells me... the scenery from that path will be the most beautiful of all.
And I'll be right alongside you. I can't wait to get a view of you achieving your dream.
I'll push myself to the limit. Then... we'll both see the scenery we seek.
9. Dream Run
66 linesSilence Suzuka's running style is unlike any seen before... And the more we train, the more we understand it.
Ahhh... She's going even faster than before.
She's running medium-distance like it's a mile! Suzuka really is amazing!
Huff, huff... Ngh...
Should we take a break? Let me know if I'm going too hard on you.
Thanks... But I'm fine. The fun I'm having outweighs the fatigue.
Despite the sweat dripping down her face, Silence Suzuka is still beaming. That positive attitude of hers shows in her running.
Her abilities are already incredible... Just what sort of running will come about if we continue down this path?
You've got a lot of talent, but it's a little unrefined. If we polish it juuust right, we'll have ourselves a diamond.
But if we want to reach for the clouds, we need to make sure the foundation is solid.
A solid foundation... Okay, I understand. I'll take a short break.
Remember, our journey is just beginning!
Right!
From this, we can determine that ramp training builds muscle in the quadriceps, leading to explosive power...
Haven't seen you in the library for a long time. Did your trainer tell you to do some research?
No, I'm just looking into effective training methods to help improve my ability even more.
My trainer's doing a wonderful job, so it's not like I'm worried. I just don't like standing still.
Heh... Sounds like you found the perfect team for you.
And it really shows in your racing. No one would even dream of winning a race running like you do.
If it were any other racer, I'd caution you against your current style. But I have a feeling you'll be able to master that otherworldly running of yours.
Yes, I know I will. After all, the scenery down that path is calling me.
I'm pretty excited myself. I want to see that fantastical running of yours, but I also can't wait to beat it with my own.
Hehe, I'm sure you'll have the chance.
Suzuka!
Fukukitaru?! What are you wearing?!
Don't tell me... Is this your newest good-luck outfit?
Not at all! I was doing some physical therapy in the pool!
That's right, you were injured during training, weren't you? Unfortunate as it may be, at least it didn't happen during a race.
Agreed. When I try to imagine such a scenario, I get chills... All hail the great Shiraoki for preventing such a grave situation! Thank youuu...
Wait, that's not why I'm here! I just heard some dreadful news, so I came here as fast as I could!
Suzuka, is it true that your next race is the Kinko Sho?!
Y-yes, that's correct...
Hnngh! To think I'd be up against a soaring eagle like you in my great return to racing!
Just as I was feeling good about my future, I receive this most devastating news. Don't tell me... Disaster approaches!
You could be that disaster, Fukukitaru. I saw you win the Kikuka Sho. You were amazing.
Agreed. That sprint in the homestretch was magnificent. Have some confidence.
Hrrrm... Perhaps I am overreacting. There's no telling how this race will unfold.
Yeah, you're right! I'm a G1 title holder! Others might count me out, but guess what? I've got what it takes to win despite my hiatus!
Ehehe, I'm looking forward to it.
Ooohhh! That smile has me scared all over again! I knew it, a great misfortune awaits! Shiraokiiiiii!
Oh, for, shut up and go back to the pool already!
Think we'll see Silence Suzuka outrun the rest of the racers today?
Are you kidding? Have you seen this lineup? No way it's gonna be that easy!
Well, I think she can do it! Show us that amazing running of yours, Suzuka!
Inhale... exhale...
We cranked up the intensity of your training, but you took it in stride.
Thinking about the scenery I'll see after all this hard work made any fatigue I had just disappear.
Every day is such a joy. I can feel myself running towards my dreams.
I feel the same way. I wake up every morning wondering just how much you'll grow today.
Then I suppose I'll have to show you in today's race. I promise that I won't let anyone else take the lead.
That's right, now go find your one-of-a-kind scenery!
I will!
WHOOOAAA! That! Was! So! So! COOOOOL!
This was a graded race, right?! How did she manage to win by over ten lengths?!
I can't believe it either! I know she's good, but ten is too good to be real!
Maybe we all have that kind of strength inside us... We've just decided that it's impossible.
Ooooh! This makes me wanna run! Think I can join a race right now?!
Unfortunately, I don't think that's possible, but I understand the feeling.
After all... she's shown us a a way of running that we all wrote off as mere fantasy!
At this year's Kinko Sho, Silence Suzuka gives racing fans a truly awe-inspiring performance.
But it's not just the fans who are wide-eyed with wonder. Suzuka has just shown every racer that their greatest dreams can indeed become reality.
Seriously? That had to be the best race I've ever seen!
No kidding! There's no telling what she'll do next!
That Silence Suzuka's in a league of her own!
...How very interesting.
If my theory is correct, she holds the answers I've searched high and low for...
10. Come What May
66 linesYou sure went all out for training today! And Trainer too, you both really packed a punch!
Yes, I think Trainer wants the same thing I do, to see just how high I can soar.
But I'm sure the upcoming Takarazuka Kinen also has something to do with it.
Air Groove is running in it too, right?! Finally, a head-to-head battle with your rival! As always, I'll be there to cheer you on!
Ah, right! Suzuka, let me give you another massage today. We wouldn't want any sore muscles slowing you down!
Wooow! Suzuka, your leg muscles are so tight! Like, mega tight! I really need to loosen you up!
No matter how much I run, I feel like I can still go farther...
When I'm running, I feel like there's someone there, pushing me to run even faster, to go even farther...
Maybe it's because you, our trainer, and everyone else on Team Sirius has been so supportive.
Ehehe, and we'll keep being supportive! All you have to do is show us more of your amazing running!
And to show you I mean it, I'll massage your legs till they turn to jelly! I'll show you what milking cows does for your hand muscles!
C-cows?
Even after her jaw-dropping performance at the Kinko Sho, Silence Suzuka surprises us all by continuing to improve.
Eager to help her give a spectacular performance at the Takarazuka Kinen, I head over to the training track.
Rustle...
(H-huh? Wh-when did it get so dark?)
Heave-ho, heave-ho.
(A-am I being carried? What's going on?!)
Welcome, my dear trainer, to my laboratory.
L-laboratory?! Who are you?!
I am Agnes Tachyon, and I brought you here to have a word with you.
A wry smile adorns the Umamusume's expression. Looking down at her feet, I see a burlap sack. Did she just kidnap me?!
What do you want with me, creep?!
"Creep" is going a little too far, don't you think? I may have been a tad rough, but I brought you here with good intent.
You see, I want to talk. Specifically, I want to talk about your trainee, Silence Suzuka.
That's all?
Yes... By the way, have you ever thought about how enigmatic we Umamusume are?
Our anatomy is practically identical to humans, yet our physical prowess far exceeds that of man.
We Umamusume are full of such mysteries... and well, solving those mysteries is the focus of my research.
...What does that have to do with my trainee?
Imagine, running a race accelerating the whole time. Even I have to admit... your aspirations intrigue me!
If she can master that running style of hers, it could take us Umamusume to the next level, nay, a whole new world!
I want to know what training methods you're implementing as you explore this uncharted territory. That is why I brought you here.
...Interesting. Are you sure you're not doing anything out of the ordinary?
Yeah, just plain ol' training and rest. I don't want to overwork her, after all.
If your training is not the cause of such super-Uma speed, then perhaps Suzuka's innate physical capabilities are just that spectacular...
No, it's just as likely to be something psychological. Perhaps it's manifesting physically as a perceived increase in strength.
Something psychological? What are you talking about?
Surely you've heard it before. We Umamusume are said to run carrying the hopes and dreams of others.
You've seen the Three Goddesses statue in the plaza, yes? The legend there also describes Umamusume as beings who carry the wills of others.
As a researcher, I tend to dismiss such talk as romanticism, but... I am also an Umamusume.
Sometimes when I run, I can feel it. I can feel someone pushing me forward.
She must be referring to the fans of racing. One of the many reasons Umamusume race is to meet the expectations of their adoring fans.
Ah, my apologies... We've drifted from our original conversation. Unfortunately, hearing about your training regimen has spoiled my plans.
What's more... I have to admit, I have concerns for your future. Grave concerns.
Like what?
You and Suzuka seek to boldly go where no racer has gone before. The ideal you search for may even lie beyond an Umamusume's capabilities.
But when you cross that threshold, her legs...
Agnes Tachyon trails off and she averts her eyes. I take a deep breath before continuing with her apparent conclusion.
You don't think her body can handle it.
I don't know. Whatever I say would be nothing more than speculation. I'm not even sure Umamusume have limits.
After all, we are full of mysteries. I apologize if my words alarm you.
In any case, I am looking forward to seeing what kind of running you and Suzuka create... May it serve as a shining beacon for generations to come.
Let's gooo! I'm off to do some ramp training!
I believe that's next on my schedule too, followed by running the straightaways, correct?
As always, Silence Suzuka is diligent at practice.
Her regimen is nothing special, and physically, she seems like any other Umamusume.
Yet that running of hers is unlike anything I've seen before... Just what will happen if we continue down this path?
You and Suzuka seek to boldly go where no racer has gone before. The ideal you search for may even lie beyond an Umamusume's capabilities.
Trainer?
Th-that's right! Ramp training, and then straightaways.
All right, then I'll get started.
Her running style is something other Umamusume only dream about.
Nobody can run like that. Or at least, nobody but Suzuka ever has.
(If we keep this up, she's going to go beyond what should be physically possible.)
As much as I don't want to think about it, the thought of an impending disaster continues to plague my mind.
11. Growing Emotions
65 linesSuzuka?!
Huff... huff... J-just a dream...
There's not much time until the Takarazuka Kinen, so we're hard at work, training for the big day.
Squee! She's so fast, right from the start! I never get tired of watching Suzuka run.
A style all her own, but one admired by racers everywhere! I get goosebumps just standing here!
Her sudden sprint right out the gate is a key part of Silence Suzuka's trademark style.
It looks like she's making a mad dash for the finish line, yet she's nowhere near it.
Normal racers would slow down to conserve their stamina by now, but not her! She's just getting started!
As if impelled by those words, Silence Suzuka's cleats kick harder against the ground, sending her flying down the course even faster.
Wooow! Her speed just shot up again!
Watching her run is like being in a dream. Fans and racers alike can't contain their excitement, and to be honest, I can't quite hold it back myself.
With every lap, she gets better, faster. At this rate there's no telling how far she'll...
You and Suzuka seek to boldly go where no racer has gone before. The ideal you search for may even lie beyond an Umamusume's capabilities.
But when you cross that threshold, her legs...
Suzuka?!
I-is something wrong, Trainer?
N-no, it's nothing.
Huff... Phew...
Welcome back, Suzuka! That's another record!
Yes, I had a feeling I was going faster. Everything just felt right.
At this rate, you're a shoo-in for the Takarazuka Kinen! Don't you think, Trainer?!
...Y-yeah, for sure.
...?
Since my talk with Agnes Tachyon, I've been on a constant quest for resources on racing injuries.
Is there any way to predict an incident? And if something happens, what sort of future can Suzuka expect?
I had hoped research would alleviate my worries, but the more I read, the more anxious I grow...
(This racer absolutely destroyed the competition in her debut race. But her second race...)
(She started out great, amazing even. Everything was going smoothly as she entered the homestretch...)
(That's when she suddenly collapsed and had to withdraw. Medical exams revealed her legs had fractured from the strain of her running... She had to retire.)
(This runner was in the middle of a race on a winning streak in her senior year. She sped up early on the final corner, hoping to overtake the others from the outside.)
(But she suddenly slowed down... She couldn't even cross the finish line.)
(She had to pull out of racing... And she never returned.)
(No matter where I look, stories of hopes and dreams being dashed in an instant keep popping up.)
(To think Umamusume are walking such a fine line...)
Excuse me.
Suzuka?
She should be finishing up dinner by now, yet she's standing in front of me in her tracksuit.
She must plan on doing some solo training. Again, she shows how devoted she is to going faster and farther than any racer before her.
Um, Trainer, maybe it's just me, but you seem to be staying late a lot lately...
Is there... something wrong with my current skill set? Are you... worried I won't win the Takarazuka as I am now?
(Not at all... In fact, there isn't a race you can't win as you are now.)
(The way you run, the power you possess, it's almost overwhelming. Too overwhelming...)
Suzuka...
Yes?
Her brow furrows as she awaits my answer.
She's gone through so much to achieve her dream. She even switched teams...
Do I have any right to stop her? To ruin her dreams? Doubt clouds my mind as I try in vain to find the answer.
Um... I'm not staying late for any particular reason... More importantly, how are you feeling? Any issues with your legs?
Are you, by chance, worried I'm overdoing it?
Then I assure you, I'm fine. Seeing as it's just before a race, I'm being even more cautious than usual.
What's more, I feel the best I ever have. There's not a single worry in my head.
After all, I have...
She stops, and her gentle expression genuinely appears free of doubt or worry.
Anyway... I'm going to go for a run. Please don't stay too late.
All right. You be careful outside.
...Trainer, I can't wait to see what sort of scenery we find at the Takarazuka Kinen.
Up until now, we've been chasing after the scenery she seeks together...
What sort of view will she show me at the Takarazuka Kinen?
Will it be a view of her crossing the finish line in record time?
Or perhaps I'll see her as the epitome of strength, besting racers with double her experience...
Still in the lead is Silence Suzuka! She's nearing the large zelkova tree marking the third corner!
(Stop that! Nothing like that is going to happen!)
(I need to do more research. If I can just find some common thread, I can use that to stop...)
Suddenly, something feels wrong. I should be looking at the documents in front of me, but...
Everything's... going black...
12. Carriers of Hope
75 lines(Huh? Is that the ceiling?)
Finally awake, Trainer?
McQueen? Are we in the infirmary?
I noticed you were particularly absorbed in your work as of late, but I never thought you'd actually collapse.
Looks like the stress got to me more than I thought.
Let's be grateful that it was just fatigue. Now... care to tell me what work was so important that you ended up collapsing?
I just... wanted to find a way to guarantee Suzuka's success.
Her success?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Suzuka I know is not cause for such concern... Is that truly the reason?
Well, I do want to make sure she succeeds... But that's because I'm afraid of what happens if her body fails...
All right, all right. The truth is...
The risk of Suzuka's running style...
She runs amazingly, like a dream! Even I get chills thinking about what we'll see at her next race.
But... what if that running is doing harm to her body? I'd hate to see her future stolen from her by an accident.
But that's the worst-case scenario. You seem so certain that this will happen.
I'm not doing anything that would guarantee it, but... I can't find anything that would prevent it either.
McQueen...
Trainer... I don't think such an unlikely scenario is worth your concern.
Surely you've heard this before, no? We Umamusume run carrying the hopes and dreams of others.
Yeah, Agnes Tachyon mentioned the same thing when I talked to her.
No matter how hard you work for your dreams, there comes a time when you feel you cannot proceed any further. Sometimes it's a physical problem, and sometimes psychological.
"I can't go on." "This is the end." I can't tell you how often I've had those thoughts... I'm sure my teammates have all felt the same.
However, overcoming limitations is another part of being an Umamusume. And by doing so, we challenge the notion that such limitations existed in the first place.
As long as we have the hopes and dreams of our supporters, Umamusume are limitless.
If you need proof, you needn't look any further than your own journey.
Wait, me?
When each of your trainees fell on hard times, who was it that picked them up? As we took off towards our dreams, who pointed us towards the finish line?
If it weren't for you and the unconditional support you offered us, none of us would be who we are today.
In fact, I would say you've helped us achieve more than we could have ever imagined.
To think that you would dedicate everything, just for me... I am truly grateful.
But despite that, I will shoulder your hopes and keep running, as your team's ace!
I... I want to win too!
And I want to make them smile today. So I'm going to give this race my all.
I wanna win! It's always been my dream! I'm scared, but I can't quit now! URAAAAAGH!
Totally! And we'll run them all together! Let's go for it! To what's beyond the Derby!
With all this support, I refuse to yield. Victory is mine.
Yeah, but I'm not going to stop here. My urge to run is what I'll use to propel me forward.
Even if your path with Suzuka does hit her limit, it will be all right. I'm sure you'll find a way forward.
Of all the hopes and dreams propelling her forward, I'm sure yours are some of the strongest.
Even when the way forward was blocked, McQueen and the others all managed to break through and make their dreams come true.
And that's because I was there to offer them a final push as they tore down those barriers.
If that's the case, then I shouldn't be sitting around making Suzuka anxious. Instead...
I need to take in the scenery Suzuka shows me!
She should be running on the training track. I suggest you go give her the same push you gave us.
Silence Suzuka believed in me enough to join our team. Since then, we've been on this path together, racing towards the scenery of her dreams.
But somewhere along the line, my eyes wandered... I started to worry about her ability to run, about things that had not yet happened.
Suzuka!
Trainer?
Suzuka, I'm so sorry.
I've been teaching you all about running techniques and different training methods, but I forgot the most important lesson I can give you.
And what would... that be?
Every time I watch you run, I can see you coming into your own as a racer. And every time, my heart swells with anticipation.
But so do my fears. I worry that your body won't be able to handle the strain.
And over time, I let those fears grow bigger and bigger, to the point where I obsessed over a made-up scenario.
I see, so that's why you looked so anxious. You were concerned for my well-being...
Yeah, but now I realize that those worries are proof that I didn't trust you enough. I didn't believe you could keep running.
Suzuka... No matter how long or short our journey may be, I want to be there for you. I want to see you catch up to that scenery you seek, just like we promised!
In order to make that happen, all I can do, and all I need to do, is believe in you! So please...
Don't think, just run!
Trainer...
All right, I won't let anything hold me back anymore. I'll leave all my rivals behind and take hold of my dreams.
And I know you'll be there, cheering me on.
With those simple words, the heavy cloud that was hanging over my head dissipates, replaced by a giddy, slightly embarrassed smile.
Could you make one more promise to me? After you leave the pack behind and cross the finish line...
Just make sure... You'll always come back to me.
Of course. How else will I return the hopes you entrusted me with?
I promise, I will always come back.
We're leaving the final corner and heading into the homestretch! In the lead is Silence Suzuka! But the other racers are in fast pursuit!
From the outside comes Air Groove! Air Groove is closing the gap! Closer, closer...
But it's no use! It's Silence Suzuka! Silence Suzuka maintains her lead with another burst of speed!
Silence Suzuka... is our winner! With that breakneck speed, she's claimed the grand prix title!
Umamusume run carrying the hopes and dreams of others, including mine...
I've never felt those words ring truer than at today's race.
13. The Scenery We Longed For
67 linesHuff, huff... D-don't leave me behiiiind!
You're late, Spe! The hell were you doing?!
I'm so sorry! Suzuka's big race is today, so I didn't get any sleep...
Shouldn't it be Suzuka who has trouble sleeping?
If your tardiness ends up getting Suzuka disqualified, you'll be in biiig trouble.
Ehehe...
All right, ready to go?
Yes.
It's been several months since the Takarazuka Kinen.
Today, Silence Suzuka is scheduled to run in the autumn Tenno Sho at the Tokyo Racecourse. She's currently the favorite to win.
Suzuka!
Air Groove... and Fukukitaru?
Your cheerleading squad is here, Suzuka!
I've got to pay you back eventually for the Takarazuka Kinen, after all. I'm taking this opportunity to study every move you make.
Really? Was that what you said? I could've sworn you were all gung ho about cheering for her when you invited me.
W-well, that's what I mean! Observation can be a form of support, you know.
In any case, I want to be the one to beat you, so you'd better not lose.
Yes, I promise I'll be the first past the finish line.
I shall also be praying for your success! May the gods be in your favor!
Ehehe... Let's hope they're in a good mood.
Well... this is as far as I go.
But remember, I'm always with you, along with my hopes and dreams. Now go see the scenery you're seeking!
I'll run towards that scenery, enjoy the view, and give you a sight to behold. After that...
I promise I'll return to you.
And I know you will! Go get 'em!
Suzukaaaaa!
Hehe!
Suzuka! Ohhh, you were really zoom'n out there!
Thank you, Spe.
I agree. You truly gave us a remarkable race. Even my legs are itching to race after seeing that.
I am also filled to bursting with inspiration! Please, please, please run with me, Suzuka!
Goodness me... That was indeed very exciting.
Tachyon?
Your performance today has taken Umamusume to new heights. A historic moment indeed.
You and your trainer truly make for the most magnificent research material.
Research material? Um... what?
Better keep those researcher eyes peeled then. There'll be plenty of views of Silence Suzuka winning from now on.
Heh... I look forward to that.
...?
Well, you can't stick around all day. You've an awards ceremony to attend.
Yes, you're right.
Thank you for your support, everyone. I heard each and every one of your voices on the track today.
Including yours, Trainer.
Well, it's my job to give you the push you need. Besides, you did exactly what I asked of you...
You came back to me. Welcome home.
Hmmm... It seems she didn't take to being called research material.
I suppose what we call her doesn't matter, but if I had to say...
She doesn't just carry the hopes and dreams of others... She is our hopes and dreams.
Yeah, that sums it up perfectly.
Suzukaaa! Thank you for that incredible race!
You better keep running your heart out!
Thank you, everyone. Your cheers of encouragement were what pushed me forward.
And I plan to keep going, running towards that beautiful scenery time and time again. So please...
I hope you'll enjoy the view of me from the stands just as much!
We're entering the homestretch! In the lead by five to six lengths is Silence Suzuka!
The rest of the racers are shifting into high gear in pursuit! Can Silence Suzuka outrun them? They're closing in by the second!
But Silence Suzuka puts the pedal to the metal and speeds off, leaving the others behind!
Silence Suzuka! It's Silence Suzuka! She crosses the finish line and claims victoryyy!
Another great race for Silence Suzuka and her runaway style! She's answered all of our sincerest hopes and wildest dreams!
Running is so much fun!
I don't know what scenery awaits me, but I'll run towards it regardless... together with you all!
