Echocalypse: Scarlet Covenant story ยท Themed biography
Misty Crossroads
The mist in the mountains mirrors the fog within the heart. The pharmacist's tragic past and stubborn rejections feel like a blizzard even more bone-chilling than the storm outside. As hidden obstacles escalate, the truth slowly comes to light. To weather this storm, one may need not brute strength, but a warmth capable of melting the deepest ice.

1. Mountain Myths
21 linesDeep in the Thousand Ruins, morning light pierces the mist, casting mottled shadows across the valley floor. Baion, carrying a bamboo basket, squats by the stream to gather Frost Leaf glistening with morning dew.
A rustling sound echoes from above, followed by a nimble figure landing lightly on a rock beside her.
Hey, Baion, up so early to gather herbs?
...Taisei.
Baion doesn't even look up; her movements remain slow and careful.
Well, haven't you felt the mountain being particularly ''restless'' these past few days?
...The wind is sharper than usual and the snow is falling chaotically.
It's more than just chaotic!
Taisei scratches her head and sits down cross-legged.
I spotted a group of outsiders over on the ridge. Man, they hadn't even made it halfway up when the wind and snow started hunting them down as if it had eyes. The elders say the '''Mountain God''' was displeased, thus venting his rage to drive the intruders away.
...The Mountain God.
She finally stills her hands, her gaze drifting toward the mist-shrouded ridge, the exact direction where the blizzard raged yesterday.
Exactly. As the old saying goes, the Thousand Ruins Mountain is sentient. If someone unwelcome enters, the mountain throws a tantrum.
...My mother used to say that...
Baion's voice is very soft, as if speaking only to herself.
The right medicine saves lives. The right path leads home. And the weather... is just the weather.
She seems to see that frail figure again, no matter how fierce the blizzard, mother always tightened her cloak and shoulders her herbal basket. She trudged through the deep snow, vanishing into the vast white trail. Back then, the storm seemed only to highlight her resolve, rather than to obstruct her.
Dr. Bai... she's a nice person. Just far too kind-hearted.
Taisei sighs, her gaze drifting toward the outside of the mountain.
...
Baion remains silent, carefully placing the herbs into her basket. The ''warning'' from the Mountain God and the memory of her mother's back against the storm are like two stones cast into the silent lake of her heart, rippling in opposing directions.
2. Sunlight Returns
25 linesThe mountain hut. The stove fire dispels last night's chill, but it cannot lift the stagnant atmosphere in the air.
Around noon, a gap will open in the western clouds. The wind rises from the valley floor. Though it's a detour, the path is smooth.
What do we need to prepare?
Pack plenty of warm layers. That window of time is short; once it closes, the mountain mist will swallow everything again. The road is slippery, so stay focused.
This is Ahun, a warrior who's lived in these mountains for years. I've asked her to guide us.
Hello everyone...
To actually drag this slacker out... you really have a way with people, Senior Sister.
Shu, come here. Let me get you sorted out.
Um... Phoebe, you are truly amazing!
Kokopelli sidles up, her face full of 'admiration'.
You predict the weather so accurately without a single instrument! Compared to you, my complex models are like children's toys.
Just some old family tricks about feeling the breath of the mountains and the wind. It's nothing compared to the precision of your ''science''.
Phoebe's tone is gentle, yet she subtly averts her gaze from Kokopelli's overly eager eyes.
No way! It's super accurate! If only I had listened to you yesterday...
She lowers her head, her voice tinged with a hint of regret.
It's all my fault for being so dependent on data and nearly putting everyone in danger... This time, I'm definitely going to learn everything I can from you!
Good that you know.
Shu inspects her scabbard, her tone indifferent.
The road is long. Watch your own back and don't cause trouble.
What.s done is done. Now, we move forward together.
Awakener distributes the prepared supplies to the group.
Yeah! This time for sure!
She nods vigorously, her smile radiant. But as she turns to grab her pack, the smile fades. A calculating glint flashes in her eyes. Phoebe's abilities are more troublesome than she anticipated, but... also far more interesting.
Ready at last, they push open the wooden door. The midday sun pierces the clouds, gleaming off the damp mountain path.
It's time. Let's go.
3. Guardian
24 linesThey follow the smooth path guided by Phoebe; it is winding but stable. After a long trekking, an ancient temple emerges from the shadows of the dense forest ahead.
I feel as if I've been here before...
A woman with a long blade strapped to her waist sits quietly on the stone steps of the shrine, appearing as though she has been expecting Awakener and the others.
Ahead lies the resting place of the mountain spirits and the heart of the mist. What makes you here?
Kyubey, it's me, Awakener of Teslovik!
Awakener? It's been a while...
We're looking for someone. Do you know where a pharmacist named Baion lives?
Baion...
Kyubey, the path-guardian, slightly raises her eyes, her gaze sweeping across the group.
I know. Her medical skills, inherited from her mother, are incomparable to the mediocre doctors in the outside world.
Do you know her?
That girl... her heart is as pure as a mountain spring. Yet for that very reason, she is easily tainted by the muddy currents.
She stands up, her tail swaying gently.
You seek her... for medicine?
We come for her help. We hope to lend her knowledge and strength to curb the spread of a poison known as ''Blissbite''.
Blissbite...
Kyubey repeats this word, her eyes becoming sharp.
...Baion may know something, but she will not help you.
Huh? Why? Aren't pharmacists supposed to dedicate themselves to saving the world?
Save the world?
Kyubey lets out a faint scoff.
If the human heart were as clear as this mountain spring, it could be saved. But do you know what her mother endured in her final years? A gem brings grief to its possessor; kindness invites disaster. What Baion has hidden is not her medical skills, but her heart that was almost shattered.
What you 'want' may just be the ''trouble'' she wants to avoid the most. Go back. The mountain mists are rising.
Without another word, she turns and retreats into the shadowed corridor of the shrine, leaving the group in the gathering mist to digest the weight of her words.
4. Dementia Orchid
26 linesMany years ago, the same Thousand Ruins Mountain. A warm wooden cabin tucked deeper away. The fire crackled, and the scent of medicine filled the air.
Mom... the snow hasn't stopped yet.
The Lee family's daughter-in-law on the north slope had a hemorrhage after laboring last night. She cannot wait for the storm to break.
Mother fastened her heavy cloak and shouldered her basket. She patted Baion on the head.
Such is the life of a healer; we cannot afford to heed the weather. Darling, watch the fire. Don't let the medicine boil dry.
The door opened and shut. The sound of the wind and snow rushed in for a moment and was cut off again. Young Baion leaned against the windowsill, watching the dark silhouette gradually dissolve into the boundless white until it vanishes.
Time and again, Dr. Bai ventured out in such weather, returning home cloaked in a chill and utter exhaustion. Sometimes she saved a life, her eyes gleaming with hope; other times, she simply shook her head, silently wiping down her medicine chest. Regardless, there was always her gentle storytelling by the fire, about the villages beyond the mountains, and the tenacity of life.
Until that day...
Mother returned exceptionally early, her hand tightly clutching a Heartless Orchid. Its petals were an eerie blue, shimmering as if the color itself were flowing.
Baion, look... the Heartless Orchid. It relieves pain like nothing I've ever seen before... but...
It seems that once a patient has used it, they can never break free from it.
From that day on, everything has changed.
My mother no longer went out to see patients. She locked herself in the garden for hours, tending to those blue orchids as they grow increasingly lush. More and more people arrived, drawn by the rumors of the ''Miracle Painkiller'', only to be turned away by my mother's icy rejection.
Dr. Bai! Have mercy! My father can't bear the pain anymore!
It's just some herbs! We can talk about the price!
Leaving a dying man to suffer! What kind of doctor are you!
The voices outside shifted from pleas to whispers, eventually curdling into vicious curses.
Have you heard? Dr. Bai hid the miracle flower. She's hoarding it to sell at an exorbitant price...
The human heart, tsk...
Young Baion hid behind the door, watching her mother's hunched silhouette in the garden. Mother no longer told her stories of the outside world. She only muttered repeatedly.
Something's wrong... it's more than pain relief... it's addictive... I must find a way... I must...
The fire still crackled, yet the room held no more warmth. The light in Mother's eyes was replaced by a frenzied obsession and a deep concern. The mountain cabin, along with the girl's entire world, sank into the cold, silent mists.
The memory fades; the perspective returns to reality.
In front of her thatched hut, Baion's fingers absently brush against the remains of a withered plant. Its silhouette vaguely echoes the blue from her memories.
...
She withdraws her hand, gazing toward the cabin. There, the 'troubles' from the world beyond are drawing near.
5. Snowy Mystery
23 linesThe mountain path grows increasingly rugged, the cliffs on either side rising like jagged blades. A sliver of sunlight pierces the sky, only to be swallowed moments later by leaden clouds surging from nowhere.
...The ''Qi'' is disturbed again.
Phoebe stops in her tracks, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. Her brow furrows tighter.
There's a tension in the wind, as if... something is forcefully funneling the moisture and chill directly onto our path.
Funneling? How is that even possible, Phoebe?
Kokopelli sidles up, pointing to the erratic curves jumping across her terminal screen.
Look, this is just a typical orographic vortex. The data fluctuations are well within the normal range. It might look terrifying, but as long as we follow the revised model...
Before she can finish, a biting gale shrieks from a narrow crevice, lashing the team with a sudden barrage of snow.
Watch out!
Shu swings her blade, cutting through the snow to shield Awakener. Snowflakes lash against their faces; the cold is bone-chilling.
Wow! This... this vortex is way too strong!
She clutches her terminal, her voice trembling in the wind, not knowing whether it's from the cold or something else.
The elders always say... the Mountain God of the Thousand Ruins Mountain has a volatile temper. When it doesn't want to be disturbed, it drives people away with wind and snow. We couldn't have... actually angered it, could we?
It's not the Mountain God.
Phoebe's voice carries clearly. She has moved to a large boulder ahead, resting her palm against its frozen surface.
The ''Qi'' has been disturbed, like a stone cast into a still pond. And that stone... was thrown by someone.
She turns her head, her calm gaze sweeping over Kokopelli.
A person? Who else could be out here in this wilderness? Unless... the pharmacist doesn't want us here?
She sticks out her tongue, trying to lighten the mood, but the mirth never reaches her eyes.
Keep up.
Ahun interrupts, her voice hard as flint.
The road is long. Save your breath.
The team trudges on in silence through a snowstorm that grows increasingly erratic and sinister. Kokopelli's ''Mountain God'' theory is like a seed, taking root quietly in the hearts of some. Meanwhile, the unspoken understanding between Phoebe and Shu, coupled with the scrutinizing glances they occasionally cast at Kokopelli, forms a different kind of silent undercurrent.
6. Beast Ambush
26 linesPassing through a narrow rock crevice, the view opens up to an unsettling depression. A faint, sickly sweet yet decaying floral scent fills the air, where blue-purple plants sway vaguely in the rock fissures. In the center of the hollow, the mist takes on an unnatural pale blue hue.
This is it... the place where the ''Qi'' is at its most turbid and chaotic. Careful, something's here.
Almost at the same moment she shouts her warning, a deafening roar explodes from the depths of the blue mist! A massive beast, bear-like but covered in irregular crystal clusters, charges out with glowing red eyes!
Engage!
The moment the command is given, Shu unsheathes her blade. Cold light flashes as she strikes the beast head-on. Awakener also quickly unleashes resonance abilities, attempting to interfere with its movements.
Don't panic! I'll pin it down with lightning!
She shouts in ''anxiety'' and waves to send several small bolts of lightning to strike precisely at the beast's feet, not to hit it, but to shatter the fragile ice crust on the ground, triggering a small avalanche that temporarily cuts Awakener off from Phoebe.
Driven into a frenzy, the beast seizes the chance to maul the isolated Shu. Despite her bravery, Shu is restricted by the terrain and distracted by her comrades, leaving her on the edge of disaster.
Yes, exactly like that... More chaos, more despair. These genuine reactions on the brink of death... what magnificent footage...
Just as the beast's massive paw is about to strike Shu...
A dark shadow falls from the sky like a meteor! A staff, carrying the weight of a mountain, strikes the most vulnerable crystal cluster on the beast's head with a heavy thud!
The beast lets out a pained wail, its massive body swaying. It actually staggers back by the blow.
Hey! Big guy, still sleepwalking? This isn't the place for you to run wild!
Taisei drops between the beast and Shu, effortlessly twirling her staff. She glances back at Shu with a cheeky grin.
Kid, your blade is quick, but your footwork's a mess. The wind got you all turned around?
The beast shakes its head, seemingly sensing the newcomer is trouble. It lets out a low growl and begins to slink back into the blue mist.
S-saved... but who is this?
Kokopelli stares at the suddenly appearing Taisei, her face a mask of surprise, but her heart sinks like a stone.
Me? I'm a friend of Awakener. Just call me Taisei.
Taisei! How come you're here at the Thousand Ruins Mountain?
What? You are the guests, this is my home!
Taisei saunters before the group, her staff resting on her shoulders, as her gaze sweeps over the chaotic battlefield.
This place, it's full of evil and polluted air. Stay too long, and your head starts to get muddled. But then again...
She picks at her ear with a faint smirk.
When the wind howls and the snow bites, it's easy to get lost. But for someone, it's not the storm that blinds them. It's the fog in their own hearts, making them see ghosts everywhere. Right?
Her gaze, seemingly casual yet deliberate, sweeps over Kokopelli's face as she struggles to maintain her look of 'relief'.
7. Cottage Rejection
22 linesLed by Taisei, the group treks through a dense, pathless forest, until several simple wooden huts appear, nestled against the cliffside and nearly seamless with the rock. A fence encloses a carefully tended garden in the front, with the bitter scent of herbs.
The wooden door creaks open and Baion stands within. She gazes at Taisei, then at the bedraggled group behind her, her face expressionless.
Sister Taisei, who are these people...
Hey, Baion. These folks got lost in the mountains and picked up a few scrapes. Can you take a quick look?
...Come in.
She steps aside, her voice flat and emotionless.
The thatched cottage is simply furnished but exceptionally tidy. Baion silently boils water, fetches medicine, treats Shu's arm scratches, and eases Phoebe's fatigue from overusing her perceptual abilities. Her movements are neither fast nor slow, almost deliberate, yet every step lands exactly where it should. Warm tea is handed to everyone, dispelling the chill from their bones.
Once everything is settled, Baion sits on an old wooden stool by the window, cradling a cup of tea.
Miss Baion, please forgive our intrusion, but we come to you regarding a matter of life and death for countless people.
... Mm.
You may be aware of a poison called ''Blissbite''... We hope you can help us find a way to curb or even neutralize its toxicity.
Silence falls over the room, broken only by the faint hissing of the teapot on the stove. Baion lowers her gaze to the cup and watches the steam curl upward.
...I can't cure it.
She finally speaks, her voice as faint as the drifting snow outside.
Medicine can treat disease, but it cannot cure the addiction within the heart. Nor can it guard against... the knives in people's minds.
My mother's garden was her world, and her cage. My world is here, and I never leave these mountains.
She looks up, her eyes crystal clear yet so vacant they reflect no one's shadow.
You all... should go back.
The moment her voice fades...
Outside, the relentless howling of the wind, the pitter-patter of snow against the windowpanes, abruptly vanishes.
An absolute, suffocating silence descends upon the hut, and even the entire valley.
It is as if even the storms of Thousand Ruins understand her refusal and have fallen into a solemn silence.
8. Lingering Mists
27 linesSilence spreads. Kokopelli gently rubs the warm teacup with her fingers, a faint shimmer of satisfaction flashing in her eyes. Shu's brows knit tightly, Phoebe watches Awakener with worry, and Taisei scratches her cheek while looking out the window.
Can you tell us why, Awakener asks. About your mother. About that flower.
Baion's fingertips tremble almost imperceptibly. She lowers her head and looks into the reflection in her teacup, as if a sealed past lies beneath the surface.
That flower, she says softly, my mother calls it the Heartless Orchid.
Her words come slowly, one by one, as if dredged from the bottom of a frozen lake.
After the calamity, its pain-relief effect became overwhelmingly strong... so strong that it made people forget pain existed, even though pain is what reminds you that you are alive.
At first, my mother thinks she has found a treasure. Later, she realizes it gnaws at the mind and traps people until they go mad. She wants to save them and find a cure for the addiction, so she locks herself away and continues her research.
Her voice tightens, followed by a long silence.
The people outside cannot wait. They do not want slow remedies, only immediate and painless elixirs. They curse Baion's mother for hiding her secrets and curse her for not saving lives, until one day, the curses stop.
Baion raises her hand and points to the edge of the medicinal field, where the soil is slightly darker than elsewhere.
They come with hoes and sticks. My mother falls in the herb garden, still clutching a freshly picked, unprocessed Heartless Orchid.
Medicine is neither good nor bad, Baion says. It is the human heart that is. I cannot tell which pains truly need healing and which are merely desires to indulge in.
At last, she looks at Awakener, her eyes filled with fatigue and alienation.
So I refused everyone, she says. That was the safest thing to do.
The cottage falls into deathly silence. Even the fire seems to dim. Awakener opens her mouth, but every attempt at comfort or persuasion feels pale and powerless before the weight of the truth. A deep confusion and helplessness grips her. Faced with wounds this deep and such desperate self-protection, she wonders if their so-called righteousness and requests are themselves another form of cruelty.
Just then, a hand pats her shoulder.
Kid, don't lose heart.
At some point, Taisei stands beside Awakener. Her voice is low, but it breaks the suffocating stillness.
Look out the window.
Awakener looks as instructed. Outside, heavy clouds gather and roll over the mountain peak again, thicker and lower than before. Another blizzard is forming, trapping them in the hut like an isolated island in the mountains.
I know the road to Thousand Ruins Mountain well, Taisei says. The hardest path is never the one blocked by a blizzard.
She gently taps the ground with her staff and points toward Baion's quiet silhouette.
It is like clearly seeing the way out, yet being trapped beneath the snow piling up in people's hearts, unable to move.
Taisei grins, but rare clarity shines in her eyes.
Someone has to go in first and stop the snow that has been falling in her heart for many, many years. Otherwise, even if you force her away, all you take is an empty medicine bag with no heart.
Taisei's words strike like a faint spark, cutting through the fog in Awakener's heart. She looks again at Baion's stubborn, lonely figure, thinks of Kala's sleeping face, and remembers the countless lives taken by Blissbite.
At this moment, the path ahead becomes clear, and daunting.
