Originally its fruit was only meant to be eaten by the gods.
Once the Tree of Might takes root, it drains all the nutrients from the land around it, feeding its fruit, while other plants in the vicinity wither. Eventually, all that's left of the planet is an enormous desert, and for hundreds of years after, not even a blade of grass can grow there.

9 linesGoku and his allies continued to battle Team Turles as the Tree of Might drained the Earth's life force. That's when Turles used a Power Ball to create a full moon that would transform Gohan into a Giant Ape...

15 linesGohan transformed into a Giant Ape and went on a rampage, attacking everyone in his path, including his father, Goku. Goku couldn't attack his own son, so he had to run for it! But just then, Icarus arrived...
