Chapter 38: Genryusai

Back then I was called Eijisai from the "Ei" character-shaped scar on my forehead.

One of my men started calling me by that name, and every time I distinguished myself in battle, it became even more widely used.

I was never fond of it. Yet Chojiro stubbornly kept calling me by that name.

He would apologize, but I knew he had no intention of stopping.

It was a brilliant Bankai. Although it was not enough to bring me down, his Bankai left a permanent scar on my forehead.

But I purposely told him it was like an infant's Bankai. Chojiro was not upset. Instead, he happily said I was right.

There was no uncertainty in his words. After years of tireless training, everybody in the Soul Society came to know Chojiro's name.

The dried-up scar came to look like the character "Ju." Before I knew it, I was now being called Jujisai.

But only Chojiro, claiming the scar created by him should not change my name, stubbornly kept calling me Eijisai.

So for his sake, I took on the name Genryusai.
